Suspected horseplay gone wrong Horse found struggling to breathe with noose around neck MADDY HARKER Wanaka Sun 15-year-old horse has been left seriously injured after an incident on Friday night. Nicky Sygrove said her horse, Misty, was “alive but still in pain” after somebody tied her to a small tree with a piece of rope which tightened around her neck over the course of the night. Nicky believes Misty was tied up sometime after 6pm on Friday.

“Misty probably panicked and ripped the tree out of the ground causing the rope to tighten like a noose around her neck,” Nicky said. “She was then left for an unknown amount of time dragging a small tree around the paddock. She eventually managed to snap most of the rope off leaving just the super-tight noose. “To make matters worse, during her struggle she had obviously become tangled in a fence (prob-

ably during her initial fight with the tree) causing open wounds on all four legs and over her head and body.” It wasn’t until a runner saw the horse in distress and struggling to breathe early on Saturday morning and called the vet that the rope was removed. Nicky said the horse was injured and traumatised from the incident. “I don’t think it was done by anyone with bad intentions,” Nicky said. “It was probably a kid

or some kids who came to play with the horse and tied it up and for whatever reason left without untying it.” Vet Natasha Dawes was alerted to the situation on Saturday morning. “When I got there I saw that Misty had a rope around her neck,” Natasha said. “It was very thick rope, like rodeo rope, and it had a knot in it and was extremely tight and cutting into her skin. Misty’s head was swollen up in front.” Story continues page 2...

Quirky signs get the message across GLENDA TURNBULL Wanaka Sun

Horse harmed

Signs installed on the Lake Wanaka foreshore by the Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) have residents talking about litter for all the right reasons. Around 30 signs have been installed along the lakefront and parks in Wanaka and Queenstown to remind people to keep the beaches and parks beautiful for everyone to enjoy. Last year there were littering issues in both Queenstown and Wanaka around Christmas and New Year and this year the council wanted to take a different approach. The tongue-in-cheek messages are setting tongues wagging on social media and QLDC Regulatory Manager Lee Webster is happy with the reaction the signs are getting. “We needed to upgrade the signage to catch people’s eye and get them to

consider our community. Instead of a message of ‘thou shall not do this or that’, we decided to be a bit quirky. So the signs show what we want them to do, rather than just say ‘don’t litter’. It seems to be working,” Lee said. QLDC general manager of infrastructure Peter Hansby said the council arranged for extra rubbish collections and street cleaning in central Wanaka and the popular visitor spots to make sure the town stayed tidy for all the extra visitors. “As always, our staff noticed an increase in the amount of household rubbish being put in the town bins,” Peter said. The quirky signs were installed around the district on December 21 with six different versions. Four designs for littering and two designs for dog control. “We’ve had positive feedback from the community on social media, so

the signs are going to stay up as long as they are effective and make people think about what they are doing,” Lee said.

Continued from page 1 Natasha managed to get hold of her, sawed off the rope with a knife and treated her. “It’s a bit of a mystery,” Natasha said. “Nicky said she doesn’t leave her horses tethered. Perhaps somebody put a rope on it to pat it, but then I don’t see why they wouldn’t just pat it. That’s the only thing I can think of. People don’t steal horses around here.” There may be damage to Misty’s larynx which would affect her ability to breathe easily while exercising, Natasha said. Nicky’s partner, Rich Tribe, said it would probably be a long recovery for Misty. “The long-term effects are unknown at the moment,” he said. Misty is kept with two other horses in a paddock on Aubrey Road between Hikuwai Reserve and the Outlet. Although Nicky and Rich don’t believe the person concerned set out to intentionally harm Misty, they want whoever was responsible to be aware of the consequences of their actions. “We are not trying to get retribution or anything like that, but we want whoever it was to be made aware that they shouldn’t play with other people’s horses,” Nicky said. “I understand that people want to interact with the horses - and giving them a pat or carrot at the fence is all good, it’s part of having your horse in town - but anything beyond this is not acceptable.” Nicky would also like to thank the runner who contacted the vet, who she has not been able to identify. Healthy trees vandalised in the town centre MADDY HARKER Wanaka Sun Two Norway maple trees on Ardmore Street were snapped in half on Thursday night (January 22). The healthy trees had been growing for two years, were 3m high and were in tree protectors. “These are fortunately quite rare events, but they are disappointing,” QLDC parks and reserves planning manager Stephen Quin said. There were no leads on the vandalism at the time of writing. “I understand when our staff talked

to police the location was unfortunately in a bit of a blindspot so there was no CCTV footage,” Stephen said. Numerous comments on the relevant QLDC Facebook post condemned the actions of the vandals. One commented that in Lake Hayes Estate trees “get snapped off most boozed weekends”, a statement Stephen said he did not agree with. QLDC ask that anyone who knows what happened, or sees anything similar happening, contacts police. Wanaka man found guilty and sentenced to home detention after filming up women’s skirts STAFF REPORTER Wanaka Sun Christopher Michael Burton, originally of Wanaka, has been sentenced to five months’ home detention for filming up the skirts of five women at a Wanaka supermarket. He was sentenced in the Queens-

Armageddon’s biggest crowd yet Crash on Crown Range MADDY HARKER Wanaka Sun Near Armageddon got the opportunity to perform for their biggest crowd yet last weekend at the Gibbston Valley Winery Summer Concert which drew a crowd of 16,000 people. The band opened for major acts Huey Lewis and the News, classic rock legends REO Speedwagon and Grammy Award-winning Melissa Etheridge. Lead singer Isaac Bell said playing to such a large crowd was a cool experience. “It’s a lot of fun and a much grander experience playing in front of a large audience,” he said. “It’s actually a little easier too, without seeing people’s faces easily you feel less judged.” Isaac said Melissa Etheridge was his favourite act of the day. “It’s very cool to see the final act she puts out it’s a big show.” Best Served Chilled from Wakatipu High were the other opening act for the concert. Near Armageddon recently played at “Hawea nu yeah” New Year’s Eve concert held at the Lake Hawea Hotel. The band includes Lucan Smith , Isaac Bell Tyler Bailey and Morgan Allen, all of whom are

Marina Terrace building to begin soon STAFF REPORTER Wanaka Sun Development of stage one of Marina Terrace apartments is due to begin soon, after 17 of the 44 apartments have now been sold. Construction will begin between May and August for stage one (comprising a restaurant and 13 apartments) at the site on Lakeside Road. According the Marina Terrace website, the

development’s 44 apartments will range in size from 185sqm to 217sqm. Prices start at $1,475,000 plus GST for the luxury residences, all of which boast lake views. The development was sold by Infinity Investment Group to Multiplied Investment Partners in March last year. The business consortium that has purchased the property is headed by Matt Tuck, a former Aucklander who now lives in Wanaka.

New QLDC chief executive has been named STAFF REPORTER Wanaka Sun Mike Theelen will replace Adam Feeley as QLDC chief executive, effective from early February. Mike held the position of general manager strategy and planning at Christchurch City Council from 2006 to 2015. He left that role just a month ago. QLDC Mayor Vanessa van Uden said Mike had the necessary attributes and skill-set for the district, as a seasoned local government practitioner with a strong background in planning and leadership.

Mike and his wife will live in Queenstown. He is a keen outdoor enthusiast who enjoys tramping. The district is already a favourite destination. There will be a brief handover period with the departing chief executive, who announced his resignation in November 2015. Before his resignation, Adam Feeley had come under fire when his family trust proposed a subdivision in Arrowtown under special housing rules, which some regarded as a conflict of interest. At the time of his resignation, Adam said he would stay in the district and enjoy the outdoor lifestyle more, while pursuing other interests.

Ride for prostate cancer awareness GLENDA TURNBULL Wanaka Sun Twelve men from New Plymouth rode from Blenheim to Bluff in nine days to raise awareness for prostate cancer. All the riders know someone who has died from the disease. Passing through Wanaka last Friday, spokesman John Hardie Boys said the ride was going well. “This is day six of our ride. The weather has been a bit challenging with drizzle most days, until we hit sunny Wanaka,” John said. “We have all done a lot of riding before this, but have never done nine days straight.” The team (pictured) includes Vaughan Smith, Paul Roe, John King, Clive Telford, Keith Burton, Dwayne Smith, Gary Bradley, Peter Roughan, John Hardie Boys, Jade Bellringer, Nick Whiting and

their driver Barry McKerrow. Barry said, “I wanted to give something back. You feel like you’re doing your little bit. We encourage people to get checked and take the simple blood test and exam. If caught early it’s one of the better cancers to get. It only kept me off my bike for four days while I had treatment.” The group reached Bluff safely on Monday despite heavy rain and a headwind, raising almost $30,000. “We all knew we had to do Bluff hill to finish, but we made it, although a few of the guys’ wheels slipped and you couldn’t see a thing at the top,” John said. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in New Zealand men and the third most common cause of cancer death. Last year approximately 600 Kiwi men died from prostate cancer.

Hats En Vogue for 2016 TRUDIE MILLAR Personal stylist Looking for the perfect on-trend accessory this year? Choose a hat. Berets, fedoras, brimmed, straw, bowler, floppy, knitted pom-pom, riding caps, fur hats and headscarves to name a few. My favourite headwear this season comes embellished, with the use of beading, fringes, tassels and glitter for a more adventurous, detailed approach. Hats are a bold symbol of personal style and confidence; your crowning glory, the perfect eye catching accessory. The face of style and femininity. Like all fashion pieces, a ‘chic hat’ is all about the perfect fit and how you carry yourself while wearing one. It’s the perfect accessory for covering up a bad hair day, exploring hair styles below your hat, drawing attention to your face, protecting you from the sun and keeping your head warm in winter. Choose a hat that works with your face shape and personal style. Which hat is best for you? Here is my advice when shopping for this fabulous accessory: If your face is oblong or rectangular, your best hats will be those that add width to your face such as low crowns and wide brims.

Luxurious Knitwear Specialising in NZ made Fine Merinos and gorgeous possum and merino garments. Beautiful crochet surprises by Anne-Marie Knitting Wools, Patterns, Needles etc 8 Helwick Street, Wanaka Phone/Fax 03 443 7294

Floppy felt hats are timeless and wide brim hats add edge to your look. If you have a square or round face, you are best in hats that elongate, such as high crowns, narrow brims and those worn on an angle. Woven or straw hats are a must-have this summer, worn with a bikini or sundress these hats scream warm-weather style. If you are blessed with an oval face shape, you can wear almost any style. Wear a hat that works with the scale of your body. The wider the brim, the shorter you will appear to be. You will need to be tall to wear brims wider than your shoulders. Heart shape and inverted triangle shaped faces (widest across the forehead with narrow jawline) are best with irregular and narrow brims, high crowns and those worn on an angle. If you have a triangular face shape (prominent jawline and narrow forehead) look for wide brims, high crowns and hats that sit back on the head. When finishing your outfit with a hat, experiment with colour and placement on your head. Angle it in different ways to see what compliments your face the most. Buy a range of hats for your wardrobe to create different looks. Be brave and wear it with confidence.

Givealittle page helps out Wesley Moore GLENDA TURNBULL Wanaka Sun The Wanaka community has rallied around a local boy who fell ill over the Christmas-New Year break and have set up a givealittle page to support the family. Wesley Moore, 14, is usually an active teenager, getting out and about playing football and climbing mountains, but just after Christmas he became ill with what was first thought to be one of the bugs circulating in the community. When his skin became quite yellow his mother Rachel Moore said she thought something was not quite right. “We took him to the medical centre. They sent us straight to Clyde hospital where they carried out blood tests,” Rachel said. Wesley’s red blood count was 42. Normal readings for red blood cells are between 125-140. Wesley was transferred by ambulance to Dunedin on December 30 where he stayed for two and a half weeks. During that time he had 18 blood bags transferred into him. Wesley was then flown to Christchurch for a bone marrow test and CT scan. Both these tests came back clear. After more tests were carried out it is believed doctors have pinpointed the problem, but he is not out of the woods yet and there are still more tests to be carried out. Rachel and Wesley are now back home in Wanaka and his red blood cell count is rising. They will be returning to Christchurch on February 3 for further tests. Rachel and her husband Adrian Moore have been overwhelmed by the support they have received from Wesley’s friends, the Wanaka soccer club and the wider Wanaka community. “We are absolutely grateful for what people are doing. Wesley’s lovely friends Billie and Tait Scurr talked to us and told us they were setting up the givealittle page for Wesley. We are so overwhelmed with what everyone has done for us and we just want to thank everyone so much for all they’ve done for us,”

Rachel said. Wesley (left) and Tait Scurr are pictured at the top of Mount Roy. Rachel liked this photo because it shows how active Wesley was and how he was on top of the world. “He can’t wait to get back to school and into sports again,” she said. week but, as the UCHRS did not have copies of any of them, decided to donate the maps as a collection to the society so they can be held on behalf of the whole community. The maps will be held with the other records of the Upper Clutha area in a dedicated fire-proof room in the Wanaka Library. The society holds documents that go back to the late 1800s and include a stores book from Cardrona from 1893. The records have been used to trace family histories, collect information for anniversaries, for research and for books. To see the archives, people can contact Margaret Thomlinson of the UCHRS on

4437084 or they can ask the librarians for a specific document or a copy for a fee. Wastebusters shop supervisor, Mathilde Fonteneau, said the shop customers had responded positively to the decision to donate the maps to the UCHRS instead of auctioning them off to individual bidders as initially planned. "Some people have been a bit disappointed because they would love to have had one of the old maps on their wall at home. But people have generally been happy to see them go to a place where they will be looked after together and where anyone interested can go and see them," she said.

a concern in Mount Aspiring National Park

A recent fire at a Fiordland backcountry hut has raised fire safety concerns for the Department of Conservation. Hope Arm Hut, a standard 12-bunk hut on the southern shores of Lake Manapouri, was almost burnt to the ground earlier this month after hot ashes from the hut’s log-burner were discarded close to the building by trampers. They failed to ensure that they were fully extinguished and a local hunter staying in the hut woke to find his feet were unusually hot. After investigating the source he raised the alarm.

DOC senior ranger, Craig Good, responded to the alert and extinguished the fire which had by then destroyed two hut piles. “These people were very, very lucky that the fire didn’t fully ignite,” Craig Good said. “Thanks to the hunter who raised the alarm we were able to save the hut.” DOC Central Otago acting operations manager Annette Grieve said there had been no reports of fires in Mount Aspiring National Park, but this incident was a reminder for people to be vigilant when extinguishing fires in huts and campsites and to use the metal buckets at the huts to dispose of hot ashes.

“This season we have been quite fortunate with the dry weather. It has been a concern, but we’ve had no incidents reported. We don’t want people to get complacent because of the recent showers. This will cause heavy growth and then if we get the northerly winds back again it will certainly heighten the fire risk,” Annette said. She also wanted to remind visitors to the islands on Lake Wanaka, especially Mou Waho Island, to be mindful of the extreme fire risk. “We want to ensure the buff weka colony is not put at risk by a campfire that hasn’t been extinguished properly,” Annette said.

A monthly column by Kim Reilly of Federated Farmers on issues affecting the Upper Clutha’s rural community…

• 10 and 20 foot on site and off site Insulated Containers • On site Manager

A busy year ahead for farming KIM REILLY Federated Farmers There is plenty coming up for Central Otago landowners in 2016. On farm, close attention will continue with the weather, river levels, feed supplies, commodity prices, financial budgets, health and safety, and animal welfare. These matters are now pretty much ingrained in the modern farmers’ daily thinking. Farmers will also need to keep a watchful eye on local and central government matters which are set to heat up. At the national level, the government will be working through the recommendations from the Land and Water Forum’s (LAWF) fourth report. Big ticket discussion items include iwi rights to water management, whether tradeable water rights are a good thing and wether every waterway should be fenced off from all animals. The government is also calling for feedback on the Resource Management Act (RMA) Reform Bill. Federated Farmers, along with numerous other organisations and individuals, will be submitting on this. The existing RMA has become an overly complex bureaucratic beast, and it’s time to review whether it’s still fit for purpose. If council plans are to be appropriately effective and efficient, the RMA needs to be clear of processes and rules that are illogical, unnecessarily resource hungry and time consuming. Developers shouldn’t have to spend years trying to progress initiatives that would bring growth, money and jobs into the regions simply because of a few who oppose progress or change, or litigious opponents who often have time on their hands, an outraged opinion or

dubious conflicted interests. Similarly, farmers shouldn’t need to apply for costly resource consent to carry out benign and legitimate farming activities that should be expected in a rural area. In Wanaka itself, a number of key local government processes are expected during 2016. The Queenstown Lakes District Council’s full review of its district plan is progressing, with hearings planned in both Wanaka and Queenstown. The Otago Regional Council’s Regional Policy Statement (RPS) decisions are also due this year. A number of appeals could result, if a look across the fence to Southland and their RPS experience is anything to go by. Late March, hearings are planned for the Otago Regional Council’s Lindis Integrated Water Management Plan Change. During this time, submissions will be heard from a number of individuals and organisations, both locally based and from as far afield as Christchurch and Auckland. Forest & Bird and the Environmental Defence Society joined the Lindis process late in the piece, long after the hall doors shut on community workshops and discussions. The high number of community and national processes is great for democracy and shows that the ability to have a say on matters impacting directly on you, or those dear to your heart, is alive and well. However, as long as submitters with no ‘skin in the game’ have the power to enter such processes, and are able to drag local matters into court based on philosophical ideals, local councils and residents will continue to face the resulting costs and consequences.

VIEWPOINT Text the Wanaka Sun 021 0849 0001 A big ups to the elves tamed the Hikuwai maze to create the loop track. Awesome!

While sailing Thursday night I was disgusted to see paint spilling into lake Wanaka from a property on Mackay St at 7.30pm what a terrible thing to do.

The new preschool in Albert Town is applying for a liquor licence to go with the attached café and I am having trouble understanding why a preschool would be selling liquor with small children just next door. Is this not a café or is it a booze shop?

It is appalling that Warbirds is having a plane displaying the nazi swastika totally unacceptable.

Dot Macfie, Managing Director, Mountainside Educare responds: I would like to clarify that our new early childhood centre Mountainside Educare is not applying for a liquor licence. The café next door is applying for a licence so people can have a wine or beer with their lunch and in the weekend when they visit. The café is only open until 6pm at the latest so there is no intention or desire on their part to open a ‘booze shop’ or operate as an off licence. Sponsored by

Ed Taylor, General Manager, Warbirds Over Wanaka International Airshow responds: “The aircraft which is coming to Wanaka from the UK has made numerous appearances at airshows in Britain and around Europe with the same colour scheme and insignias as well as in movies including ‘The Battle of Britain’. This aircraft will be performing alongside a Spitfire at Wanaka to mark 75 years since the Battle of Britain which we are doing as a mark of respect for the New Zealand veterans living and past who were part of that conflict. We are also not in the business of sanitising history.”

Retired zoologist John Darby keeps us up to date on the latest grebe hatchings at Lake Wanaka. I must say I was rather chuffed to see the photograph of my favourite nest on the front page of the last issue of the Wanaka Sun. This is the infamous nest number two, the one I recently described as looking like “a compost heap on a pallet” as I put it into place one dark evening in 2013. It was made from damaged ply salvaged from Mitre 10 and broken swim noodles from the Wanaka swimming pool. (I can still recall the look of incredulity and disbelief of the pool assistant as I tried to explain what I wanted them for.) I built this first artificial nest with great care and attention to detail, weaving willow fronds into the “weed mat” that I had stapled to the platform. I scraped a bit of soil from the nearby shoreline and put as much weed and leaves and

such stuff to cover the base of the willow twigs. The willow growth I suspect has been encouraged by duck poo, placed there with equal care by mallards when grebes have been absent. A review of the history of nest two indicates that thus far there have been ten nesting attempts in which a total of 38 eggs have been laid and 27 chicks have hatched. I leave nests alone as much as possible, but I need to know when the first and last eggs are laid so that I can calculate hatch dates. I checked this nest last week and this bird is no exception to many on the marina to an enquiring hand checking for eggs. It simply tattoos a brief message on the back of one’s hand in red with a very sharp beak, “Don’t touch!”

Seven stages, two days, one race MADDY HARKER Wanaka Sun The Red Bull Defiance multisport competition held last weekend saw an international field of 100 multisport athletes defy the odds. The athletes battled a total elevation of 5238m on Wanaka’s rugged landscape in addition to challenging weather conditions over seven punishing stages of running, kayaking, mountain biking, abseiling and clay-bird shooting. Elite men was won by Daniel Jones and Alex Hunt (pictured) who came in with a combined time of 11:50:02. Local athlete Simone Maier and Ohakune resident Marcel Hagner took out the elite mixed category at 12:28:06 and Sia Svendsen and Joanna Williams won the elite women at 15:45:58 with plenty of local support. The overall first place winners

- who only met a few days before the event - took home $10,000 in prize money for winning the 143km two-day race. Former All Black Richie McCaw raced the 43km mountain bike leg as preparation for Godzone in April.

Two brothers are forging ahead with their skiing careers, one in the big mountain arena and the other in halfpipe and slopestyle. Hank Bilous, 18, has just graduated from Mount Aspiring College. He specialises in the freeride discipline (also known as big mountain) and recently earned second place at the Freeride World Qualifier in Verbier. During the New Zealand ski season he achieved a third place at the Freeski Open of NZ big mountain event. He is easily spotted on the mountain - he always wears a Hawaiian shirt over his ski gear and usually with some other crazy accessory - for example, a pair of jandals strapped to his pack. Finn Bilous, 16, specialises in freeski halfpipe and slopestyle and is a member of the Snow Sports NZ Freeski High Performance Development Squad. He has been selected to compete at the Youth Olympics being held in Lillehammer, Norway, from February 12-21. The whole family is heading to Norway to watch Finn compete at the Youth Olympics.

GLENDA TURNBULL Wanaka Sun English open water swimmer Adam Walker will visit Wanaka this week to promote his new book Man v Ocean at a book signing at Paper Plus tomorrow (Friday, January 29) at 2pm. One of only six people in the world to complete the seven deadliest ocean swims in the world, Adam will be talking about his experiences. “I will be talking about dolphins saving me from a shark in Cook Strait, how I was stung by a Portuguese man o’ war jellyfish in Hawaii, swimming with one arm for six hours and achieving my dreams,” Adam said. He was inspired to swim the English Channel

and, after a year of rigorous training without a coach, he completed the swim in 11 hours 35 minutes, despite a ruptured bicep tendon. Against medical advice to give up long-distance swimming and after two operations, he changed his swimming style to take pressure off his injured shoulder. He became the first Briton to achieve a two-way crossing from Spain to Morocco and back in 2011. Shortly afterwards, the Ocean’s Seven challenge was born, a gruelling equivalent to the Seven Summits mountaineering challenge. His new innovative swim technique - the Ocean Walker stroke - enabled him to continue with the ultimate aim of completing this seemingly impossible feat. His attempt forms the core of his autobiography.

The Informant Interesting to hear and observe the positive reports from the local businesses in the town over this summer. By all accounts there are not many complaints forthcoming from the accommodation providers, café owners, fuel stations and tourist operators. I must admit that it is great to hear this as it fills the town’s coffers ahead of the off season that is coming our way all too soon. One thing that does puzzle me are the odd complaint you hear from a local wishing the town didn’t fill up and become so busy. I understand there may be some inconveniences with a busier town but the benefits to business far outweigh any negatives. Personally I embrace the concept of a slightly longer queue at the town’s hotspots as we are all winners from this small inconvenience. Love the visitor is what I say. With the extra activity in town it really allows businesses that do things right and bring home a good profit for the summer. Generally cost structures will stay the relatively static when turnover increases albeit staff costs may increase. Most hospitality and accommodation providers look to have increased their staffing levels and have taken on extra resources over the summer. Extra employment is a big plus for this town. One of the main things to be aware of is the effect that increased activity can have on your gross profit margin. Gross profit margin is the % efficiency of

PAGE 14

your staff and material costs measured against your output or sales. For example something that sells for $100 dollars and costs $35 for materials and $35 for labour has a $30 gross profit. In margin percentage terms the return is 30%. This is calculated by the gross profit divided by the sales ($30 divided by $100). Sometimes when things become busy and a business’s sales increase you will find the gross margin slips. If we take the above example and alter it as follows you can see the effect. If for example sales have doubled to $200 with material costs at $70 and labour at $75 leaving a profit of $55. Even though the total gross profit has risen from $30 to $55 the gross margin percentage has dropped and now fallen to 27.5%. This effectively means that under the old scenario had the gross margin not slipped the gross profit would be $60 and not $55. On face value it doesn’t have a large effect as the lost revenue is only $5. However if your business turns over $300,000 it is a loss of $7,500 pa. Worthwhile paying attention to. The key question to ask is why does this happen? From what I can tell based on discussions with clients over a number of years there appears to be a number of reasons that contribute to this drop off in gross margin. The common ones are as follows: Too many administrative tasks need the owner’s attention and not enough care is given to quotes. Mistakes in pricing lead to the job being doomed from day one.

Mitchell/Lynne Fegan %4.95%. E/W: Alan Cruden/Wendy Cruden 69.69%, Jenny Turnbull/Lynda Hodge 68.75%, Errol Kelly/Vivienne Christie 63.92% Kingsway Stakes N/S: Michael Metzger/Claire Scurr 61%, Lois Mills/Jo Wallis 57.43%, Ian MacDonald/Errol Kelly 57.29%. E/W: Liz Hawker/Michael Unwin 60.57%, Jacqui Roberts/Ken Roberts 59.29%, Barbera Waterworth/Jenny Muir 57.14%

Too many jobs are taken on at once and there is pressure to fill multiple deadlines so juggling of staff and jobs becomes an issue. This tends to lead to more down time due to travelling between jobs trying to satisfy customer demands. Jobs are started and not completed in one session where possible. This leads to more items to focus on which in turn leads to more clutter. I have heard numerous times from people building houses that they have withheld payment until the last little job that hasn’t completed is finally done. If that contractor had just finished the small tasks their cash-flow would be so much better off. All work that is won is taken on that causes stretch of capacity of the business. You don’t always need to take on every job. Wastage and procedures are not followed as people take short cuts or forget to record details. Have you ever been to a restaurant where the dessert hasn’t been charged or the coffee order at the end of the night missed? These things really affect your margin and can happen when people get too busy or systems let you down. One the positive side of things increases in activity can lead to an increase in margin. Things like greater purchasing power as volumes increase allows for better bargaining power with your suppliers and staff handling more transactions are more efficient from a per customer perspective.

Podium finish despite extreme conditions

Back-to-back wins for Piera Hudson New Zealand’s top-ranked female ski racer, Wanaka’s Piera Hudson, has had back-to-back wins in the super giant slalom at International Ski Federation (FIS) races in Aspen, USA. She won the first race early last week, finishing 1.14s ahead of USA’s Megan McGrew. She won her second race the day after, beating second place-getter Andrea Arnold (CZE) by 0.62s. Sarah Schleper finished third. “I’m really happy to go two for two today in Aspen,” Piera said after the race. “The course was a lot more technical than yesterday but

really fast and fun as well and it's always cool to share the podium with World Cup winner and four-time winter Olympian Sarah Schleper. Today was my third super G win for the season so I hope I can keep it rolling for the rest of the winter.” Piera is now in Steamboat Springs, Colorado for a series of slalom and giant slalom races. Next month she will head to Sochi, Russia – the venue for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games – with team mate Eliza Grigg (Darfield) to compete at the FIS Junior World Championships.

Seniors dominate in Koford Cup, Reserves lose to Queenstown The Galloway and Still Albion Seniors dominated Blacks Hill in the Koford Cup last Saturday. Albion won the toss and elected to bat, making a first innings total of 234 all out. Gareth Tate scored 44 not out, while Tim Cotter and Ross McGregor contributed 39 and 33 respectively. In reply Blacks Hill were rolled for 77. The best of the Albion bowlers were Sebastian Arraita with 4 for 40 and Shaun Webber with 4 for 2.

The Galloway and Still Seniors are away to Queenstown this Saturday. Matrix Albion Reserves took on Queenstown last Saturday on Pembroke Park in the Golden Family Cup. Queenstown won the toss and went into bat, scoring 234 for their first innings. Teddy Bowman was the best of the bowlers with 2 for 26. Albion started well but finished all out for 186. James Baker was the top scorer with 66.

Competitors faced "extreme weather" in the International Ski Federation (FIS) Freeski Halfpipe World Cup at California's Mammoth Mountain on Friday, but Wanaka's Janina Kuzma came away with a podium finish. The competition schedule for the finals had been brought forward, with training beginning at 8.15am and the ladies’ competition starting at 9am, in anticipation of an incoming front. “As training progressed so did the frequency of wind gusts, and that cloud on the horizon just kept getting thicker,” Snow Sports NZ's head park and pipe coach Tom Willmott said. “Janina kept a clear head, opt-

"I am happy with the result today after coming off a New Zealand progression halfpipe camp in Calgary. I'm pleased with how I skied today under the extreme weather conditions," Janina said.
