Four suitcases packed for Fiji
INSIDE:
DANIELLE BUTLER newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz Local couple Kim and Bart Nicol are using their summer holidays as an opportunity to help residents of Fiji devastated by the impact of Cyclone Winston. The couple, who are heading to Fiji on March 11, have appealed to the local community to provide amenities that they can take with them in four extra suitcases. Kim said the response from people so far has been overwhelming. “At this rate we’ll be needing 40 cases, not four. It’s really humbling and I am so proud of everybody. The community is so amazing and every little bit is going to help,” she said. Air New Zealand have been asked if they will do their bit by covering the $75 fee for each suitcase, but if they don’t, 15 local businesses have

so far pledged to sponsor the cases. People have donated clothes, toothbrushes, toothpaste, sanitary pads, pens, pencils and money, which Kim and Bart will be delivering to the people of Fiji. “We will be delivering this stuff personally to ensure they go to people in need. I have seen too much money go to organisations to then not make it to the people who really need it,” Kim said. Cyclone Winston, the strongest storm ever recorded in the southern hemisphere, tore through Fiji last month, killing 42 and leaving tens of thousands of people homeless. Those wishing to donate items have until March 9 to do so, and can drop them off at 6B Rob Roy Lane or at Montessori, 122 Kings Drive. Alternatively, call Kim, who is willing to collect items, on 027 2546 697. Pictured: Kim Nicol with recent donations. PHOTO: NIKKI HEATH

wners of an alpaca killed by a dog at Lake Hawea over the weekend have voiced their concerns about dog control. David Sherwyn and Amy Ballantyne’s pet alpaca Cassidy was mauled by a large dog sometime between Thursday night (February 26) and Friday morning. The couple’s alpacas graze on land owned by Contact Energy on the outskirts of Lake Hawea and are popular with passing tourists.

David wanted to highlight that although they are upset about losing their pet alpaca to a dog attack, they are more concerned about the danger to the public of a roaming dog which has attacked an animal. “The land where it happened is private land, but there is public access via the track. If the dog has attacked an animal it could attack a child. We need dog owners to please make sure your dogs are secure and not roaming. It is your responsibility,” he said. Queenstown Lakes District Council communications manager Michele Poole said, “the Council

“They are probably the most photographed alpacas in New Zealand,” David said. “Tour buses stop and take photographs of them all the time and post them on Instagram.” The alpacas keep the grass under control which minimises the risk of fire for the landowner. David said they have had up to 11 alpacas grazing on the land, but have sold a few to a high country farm in Cardrona and now have five. “We always sell them in pairs. The locals get offended when we sell them. They are all very fond of them,” he said.

Council identifies points of concern with proposed RMA GLENDA TURNBULL journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz Queenstown Lakes District council considered the proposed changes to the RMA Reform Bill at an extraordinary council meeting on Tuesday March 1. The council heard recommendations from QLDC acting district plan manager Blair Devlin and general manager planning and development Tony Avery. There were 11 main points of concern raised, with six being identified as proposals the QLDC would likely want removed from the Bill. The six points opposed by the Council are: • Regulation making powers to enable the minister to prevent and remove certain council planning provisions and to permit certain activities. • Consent exemption for boundary infringe ments with neighbour’s approval. • Ten-day fast-track consenting process for simple applications. • Consent decisions to be issued with a fixed fee. • Enable the Environment Court to allow councils to acquire land where
planning provisions have rendered land incapable of reasonable use and placed unfair and unreasonable burden on the landowner. • Streamlining of the notification and hearing process. The five points which the report supported with changes were: • Streamlined planning process. • Changes to plan making processes. • National Planning Template. • Strengthen requirements for councils to improve housing supply and provide for development capacity. • Improving processes for specific housing consents. The report recommended the council authorise the submission of Attachment A to the report to the Local Government and Environment Select Committee, authorise officers in consultation with the mayor, planning and development portfolio leader or deputy leader, to make minor and inconsequential changes as necessary prior to lodging it and confirm whether council wishes to be heard by Select Committee in relation to the submission. A full copy of the report and proposed submission is available on the QLDC website.
Food Act 2014 comes into effect STAFF REPORTER editor@thewanakasun.co.nz Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) is gearing up to help local food premises comply with a new law. The law applies to all businesses that sell food and came into effect on March 1. This includes anything from restaurants, to corner dairies, market stalls, or internet cake sellers. Deputy Director-General regulation and assurance at the Ministry for Primary Industries Scott Gallacher said, “The Food Act 2014 is designed to modernise food safety in New Zealand. It will make it easier for businesses to make sure their food is safe.” QLDC’s regulatory manager Lee Webster, said the news of the changes shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone, as they have been well signalled both nationally and locally and QLDC has already been working with local food businesses with a view to getting a smooth transition to the new regime. “Of the 474 businesses registered with us across the district, over 50 percent are already participating voluntarily,” Lee said.

Scott said the new law applies to a wide range of businesses, and includes any which make, sell, grow or transport food commercially. This includes those who serve food as part of their business, like education providers or homes. “We’ve made it easy for businesses to see how the new law applies to them with an online tool. Businesses should visit the MPI website and use “Where do I fit?” “The new law moves from a one-size-fits-all approach, to one that regulates businesses according to risk. This will help keep regulation and costs down for many businesses, especially lower-risk businesses, like those who grow fruit and vegetables or sell only prepacked food. It also offers businesses greater flexibility,” Scott said. Existing food businesses don’t have to make changes straight away. They will move over to the new Act at different times over a three-year transition period. Businesses can find out what they need to do online at www.mpi.govt.nz/foodact.

Volunteers for Victim Support DANIELLE BUTLER newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz Victim Support are appealing to the community for more volunteers to help provide emotional and practical support to those facing grief and trauma. The service currently has four volunteers serving Wanaka, and would like at least five more to ensure they continue their work in the area to a high standard. Belinda Stewart, 29, has been a volunteer since June 2015 but is shortly due to go on maternity leave. “It’s a great thing to do to be part of the community, especially in a small place like this, it’s just good to be able to give something back,” she said.
Victim Support is a free community response service, which runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week and volunteers are asked to give a minimum of eight hours a fortnight. Service co-ordinator for Central Otago, Rachael Brown, said that most of the service’s volunteers work full-time and are of all ages and occupations. The next training sessions will be held on April 30 to May 1 and May 14 to 15. Those interested in volunteering or finding out more information can contact Rachael on 0274 510276 or visit victimsupport.org.nz. Arrests in relation to assault GLENDA TURNBULL journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz A 43-year-old Cromwell male suffered serious facial injuries including a suspected broken jaw, fractured cheekbone and injuries to his ribs as a result of a serious assault in Cromwell on Saturday February 27. The assault occurred near the public toilets on Lode Lane, Cromwell at 12.10am. The victim was taken to Dunstan Hospital but has now been discharged. the case. An 18-year-old employed Cromwell man has been arrested and charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and theft. A 17-year-old unemployed Cromwell man has been charged with disorderly behaviour, likely to cause violence and threatening language. Both men have been bailed to appear in the Alexandra District Court yesterday (Wednesday, March 2). On Saturday, Detective Lisa Watt of Queenstown Police said the victim had sustained serious injuries in the assault, but is expected to make a full recovery.

Couple cycle for chopper appeal DANIELLE BUTLER newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz Husband and wife team Jacqueline and Steven Dearlove will be cycling the 230km from Frankton to Invercargill to raise vital funds for the Lakes District Air Rescue Trust and their Te Anau and Queenstown choppers. This will be the third time that the couple, who recently sold their dairy farm in Invercargill to buy a home in Wanaka, will be undertaking the Westpac cycling challenge, which has been running for six years.
“The training has been going good so far, we were first inspired to do the ride as it is for such a worthy cause,” Jacqueline said. Nationally, the Lakes District Air Rescue Trust perform around 3000 rescues per year and have been sponsored by Westpac since 1982. Jacqueline said that last year $1.2 million was raised for the choppers, and that 50 percent of their funds are raised by community donations. Their target is to raise around $1000 each, but they hope to raise as much as $10,000 or even $20,000. Those wishing to donate can visit chopperappeal.co.nz.
Volunteer patrol to monitor freedom camping proposed GLENDA TURNBULL journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) has recently been approached by a member of the Luggate community who is interested in setting up a volunteer patrol to check on freedom campers in the area. The reserve near the Red Bridge is a popular place for freedom campers to park and QLDC regulatory manager, Lee Webster, said
provided people are in certified self-contained vehicles, they are allowed to camp there overnight. “Residents want to make sure the campers are complying with the council’s Freedom Camping Bylaw. This kind of volunteer community patrol works well in other places, including Glenorchy and Kingston, so if people in the Luggate area are keen to get some training and undertake patrols in their area, our staff will be very happy to support them,” Lee said.
Annual Plunket Sale revived GLENDA TURNBULL journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz A huge need for Plunket services is the driving force behind the revival of the annual Plunket Sale on Sunday March 13 at Lone Star Wanaka from 10-2pm. Event organiser Hannah Twiss said they are hoping for a market/ garage-sale style event focused on children’s needs, like preloved prams, clothes, toys and commercial stalls with new crafty nursery decor and clothes. Lone Star and Mr Whippy are offering a percentage of their sale proceeds and Lone Star will have staff on the bar to serve coffee and drinks and the kids’ menu
throughout the day. Committee member Linnet Julius said with the growing population of families with babies, demands on the Upper Clutha Plunket Centre have grown. “We are raising funds to help run the centre. I feel that there is a need for Plunket and we have a lot of enquiries on our Facebook page from people moving here as well as locals asking what is available for young families. We are a real source of information for new people moving to the area as well as the current community,” Linnet said. To book a stall contact rebecca. mcmillan@hotmail.co.uk by March 4. Entry to the public is by gold coin donation.

Promoting a plastic free Wanaka GLENDA TURNBULL journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz Plastic Free Wanaka is a new 300+ strong, rapidly-growing Wanaka group getting great momentum on Facebook. Its aim is to raise awareness of the amount of single-use disposable plastic in our lives and challenge our community to do something about it. Within the next two years their vision is to make Wanaka the first 100 percent plastic bag-free town in Otago; to contribute to a waste-free future for New Zealand. “The focus is to share ideas and find solutions on how to create a waste-free town and get ourselves on par with many other major towns around the world who are now successfully plastic-bag and one-use bottle free,” Anna VanRiel said. “Our mission statement is to ‘Get rid

of plastic bags in Wanaka for a cleaner future’.” Suggestions to get the ball rolling are to bring your reusable bags with you when shopping, ask for alternatives to plastic bags in your local shops, use a reusable cup rather than a takeaway coffee cup (some local cafes will give you a discount), or if you forget your reusable bag, use fewer bags at tills or ask for a cardboard box. The group welcome new members to join the discussion and are encouraging people to join the group on Facebook. They hope local action will bring about change. They would also like to hear from any local business who already do provide alternatives to plastic, or who would like to make the change. They are also looking for sponsors interested in supporting the campaign. Contact Sarah on 0272104716 or email saraheberger@hotmail.com for more information.

Liz said she was excited to be part of the event and promises a vibrant performance on the ‘connexions’ theme. “I’ve centred the performance around a quote by 20th Century writer E.M. Surprise boxes inspires latest book GLENDA TURNBULL journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz Lucy Davey’s latest book is inspired by surprise boxes. The Mystery Box and Finnigan Flynn takes the reader on a journey of surprises. The story begins when Finnigan Flynn hears the doorbell ring and finds on his doorstep a curious thing - a mystery box tied up with string. The story continues with all manner of things bursting out of the box. This book is Lucy’s tenth book published by Scholastic. She started writing just after her first child was born. Lucy was inspired by Dr Seuss’ rhyming words. “I thought I could write rhyme because I had been writing songs since I was a teenager, but I thought I was going to write a musical influenced by ‘Annie’ not children’s books,” Lucy said. Before writing Lucy worked as a Biotechnology and Bioprocess Engineer and completed her PhD in Chemical Engineering. “Then after I had Hannah I was talking with my husband about goals we would like to accomplish and mine was to have a children’s book published. Three years after that I had done it,” Lucy said. In 2010 Lucy won the Storylines Joy Cowley

Award for Out of Bed Fred, which was also a Storylines Notable Book for 2011. Her book, The Fidgety Itch, was a best seller in 2011, and was produced as a CBeebies Storytime program by the BBC Worldwide Australia in 2012. Lucy likes to describe her ideas as balloon bubbles which she draws on when she is inspired. “It is like pulling the balloon down by the string and adding to the ideas and words and then letting it float back up. The balloon and ideas are just floating up above you until you are inspired again and you reach up and pull the balloon bubble down to work on it again.” The book will be launched at the Wanaka Library this Saturday, March 5 at 11.30am.

Photographing waterfowl BOB MOORE Wanaka Camera Club Many photographers take great delight in taking pictures of waterfowl and a good number find grebes, one of the rarer species, particularly pleasing to make images of. The first key to photographing waterfowl is to know where they inhabit. We are fortunate in Wanaka as retired zoologist, John Darby, has fostered a number of crested grebes by constructing nesting rafts in Wanaka Marina. So not only are we fortunate to have grebes right on our doorstep, but we are also regularly updated on their progress by John’s Wanaka Sun column “Grebe Diary”. Many Wanaka Camera Club members have taken advantage of this situation and pictures of these beautiful birds are regularly submitted to the club’s monthly competition. When photographing waterfowl, pick a spot with the right angle of light. To avoid taking pictures of overexposed birds, do not look into the sun. Front lighting works well, though overhead lighting or diffused light on a cloudy day can prove effective. Remember to be patient as grebes are moving objects, so we should be willing to spend some time in one place in order to get the picture we want. Keep noise and movements to a minimum to avoid scaring the birds away, although the grebes at Wanaka Marina appear pretty resilient. However, this is not the case with all breeds of waterfowl and many can be easily spooked. When composing our picture the point of focus needs to be the bird’s eyes which must be totally sharp. We can get away
SUN NEWS CAMERA CLUB
with everything else being in softer focus, but if the eyes are tack-sharp we are well on the way to making a great image. Also, unless deliberately intending to take a
close-up of the bird, do not frame the subject so close that it has nowhere to go. Give the subject some space. If we crop too tight and don’t leave enough room for the bird to exit the frame it is almost like trapping them into the shot. If we leave some extra space it is very likely that our picture will look stronger for it. Set our camera with the lens at its longest focal point. It is a remarkable phenomenon with all types of wildlife photography that unless we are using extreme long zoom lenses, however close our subject appears in the viewfinder, when we see the actual picture it is never as close as we remember. Set the lens to a wide aperture to isolate the bird from its surroundings and, if possible, use a shutter speed as least

as fast as the focal length of the lens. For example, if using a 200mm lens the shutter speed should ideally be at least 1/200th second. Try to use a tripod for stability; if this is not possible look for other objects (posts, benches, fences) to help keep our camera steady. Heather Macleod is one club member who takes particular pleasure in observing and photographing crested grebes, so much so that she published a book full of wonderful pictures of these delightful birds. Heather loves the way grebes, both parents and chicks, interact with each other and likens this to a family which works well together. Heather’s picture “Crested Grebe Family” was taken at Wanaka Marina in the middle of November at 4.30pm. She used an Olympus E-M5 camera attached to a Lumix G Vario 100-300mm lens set at its maximum focal length of 300mm, with an aperture of f5.6 , a shutter speed of 1/250sec and an ISO of 250. Heather likes to use a tripod but in this case found it impractical so improvised by making a “human” tripod by placing her elbows on her knees. Her picture was well received by the adjudicator of the club’s monthly competition who awarded it a merit. Wanaka Camera Club is dedicated to help improve the photographic skills of anyone interested in photography. We welcome anyone to join us irrespective of photographic ability – if you know nothing about photography we will teach you. Come along and see what we can do for you. Our next meeting is on Monday March 14 at the new time of 7.00pm, and is held at the St John’s Rooms, Link Way.

Show organiser Jane Stalker said, “We’ve taken on board that feedback and think we’ve come up with a good solution for our visitors. We hope people will support the free shuttle service so it can become a permanent feature of the Show.” The move has also been endorsed by the Wanaka Police, she said. “We know how busy Wanaka gets at Show weekend with people coming from all over New Zealand to experience our event, so it’s good to be able to help ease the pressure on parking.” “The Wanaka Show is a major event for the Queenstown Lakes, and it’s an A&P event of national significance, so it’s really important for us to listen to the feedback and keep improving the Show each year,” Jane said.

SUN VIEWS

VIEWPOINT Facebook www.facebook.com/WanakaSun/ Voting in the second referendum, to decide the official flag of New Zealand, starts today and will continue until March 24. Love it or hate it - and you do in equal measure - now is the time to have your say. In 1893 NZ women were the first in the world to get the right to vote. We can be leaders of change. Come on let’s do it!
When I see in the paper that there had to be funds raised for an ultrasound machine for Dunstan hospital... it just begs belief.... Instantly recognisable as NZ. Far better than the current one. I like it. It looks like ours, not someone else’s or that we belong to the UK. I would be proud of this flag. I will be voting for the current flag.
You know what ... from the staunch supporter of keeping the old I’m actually thinking I quite like the change idea .. shoot me for saying it, but ... there it is!! Taking away the Union Jack does not remove us from the Monarchy.
I’m Australian (and live in Oz), but I really do like this design. I can only hope that if/when Australia decides to get a new flag that it is as nice as this one. I haven’t liked any suggestions so far. It’s about time we had our own distinctive flag. I’m all for change.
We had our flag first, the Aussies copied us, so they should change not us.
I want a new flag but not this trade mark monstrosity...
Complete waste of money better spent on health & education! Looks like a product logo
Money better spent on real issues.
Time NZ grew up and stopped being a servant . It’s about dignity.
So little imagination,in the new design.

Rodeo saddens and disgusts
I am saddened and disgusted that Wanaka is holding a second rodeo. In the 21st century such abuse of animals should not be considered acceptable, worse it is considered entertainment. Animals were not put on the planet for the amusement of humans. It is terrible enough that humanity has, since the 1970s, killed off 40 percent of the wildlife for the production of unnecessary food. We do this to make room for 70 billion animals to eat. Yet we do not need to eat animals in order to survive. We are no longer cavemen, we claim to be civilised, yet we routinely abuse animals. The Animal Welfare Bill states that animals are sentient beings. Is this any way to treat sentient beings? How would you feel if it was your child being chased round a ring by a guy on horseback? How would you feel to see crowds of people watching this spectacle and cheering? In the Richmond Rodeo earlier this year a bull broke his leg and was put down. To say this is entertainment is foul. Many years ago New Zealand led the world and stopped animal

circuses, yet the rodeo somehow escapes from this. I do not understand how it is different. Is it because the animals used are also used for meat? Does this make it ok? How about if we used dogs and cats in this rodeo? Is it ok then? We have decided that elephants and lions don’t deserve to be put in tiny cages and trundled around the country, taken out and abused for our entertainment. We don’t do it to ourselves or our children. We don’t allow this treatment to our pets. Why then must our food animals who are already abused enough in our factory farming systems suffer such extra torture? Ask yourself this question if you choose to attend this rodeo: is this animal having fun? Is this an acceptable way to be entertained? What are you teaching your children about how animals should be treated? Remember these are sentient beings, they feel pain, they have emotions, they are scared. Claire Insley B.Sc Adv.Dip
granting of funding by the Central Lakes Trust. The grant, of $40,000, was made to the Wanaka Watersports Facility Trust, not, as claimed, to the Wanaka Hawea Reserves Trust. The correspondent wishes to apologise to all who might have been offended or misled by the claim.

GREBE DIARY I did manage to get to Lake Hayes this last week, though having arrived fairly early in the morning I was less than sure that I had made the right decision. Lightning and thunder rolled around the nearby hills and I pondered the wisdom of my choice of paddle for the day. I had committed to my aluminium shaft as opposed to my lightweight carbon fibre one and waving it around over the water I speculated on its conductivity. It provided that little tinge of danger and excitement that counting grebes brings! The reason to go to Lake Hayes was to compare my counts of February 2014, 2015 and 2016 with the count that George Chance, a Dunedin optometrist, made in 1997. The trip did confirm that indeed we are close to the end of the grebe breeding season, though I confess that I did not search for nests; but the size of chicks matched fairly evenly with what we have on Lake Wanaka. In February 2014, I counted 45 adults and 35 chicks. In February 2015, 59 adults and 26 chicks. Mr Chance did his count on February 24, 1997 and counted 12 adults and 6 chicks and I did mine almost exactly 19 years later on February 23 and counted 68 adults and 34 chicks. George would be so pleased! I am also convinced that the lake gets bigger every time I kayak it. John Darby 28th February 2016.

Wanaka sees its second rodeo of the year on March 12, following on from the action of the Wanaka A&P Show, held on the same day. The Wanaka Twilight Rodeo will open its gates at 2.30pm, although the top cowboys won’t compete until 4.30pm and will finish at around 8pm, giving people the chance to enjoy both events. “We know that the big event of the day is the A&P Show and we don’t want people to be rushing away from that. People can come out a bit later and still enjoy a pleasant evening on the grass amphitheatre,”
Wanaka Rodeo Club’s president, Lyal Cocks said. Second division competitors will begin earlier in the afternoon at 3.30pm and are not permitted to enter the three rough stock events; saddle bronc, bareback and bull ride. Charity ride for Love, Hope, Strength DANIELLE BUTLER newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz Love Hope Strength Foundation’s volunteer coordinator Lydia Franklin stopped off in Wanaka last week as she continued her month-long solo bike ride down the length of the country. This is not the first time Lydia has undertaken such a testing physical challenge for the charity, having cycled America’s Route 66 in 2013. “I thought, what could I do to top that? The Trail of The Long White Cloud: North to South New Zealand unsupported by bike,” she said. On Saturday February 27 Lydia reached her final destination of Bluff, having so far raised £2505 ($5268), and is now back in her home country, England. “It is strange not to have to worry about headwinds and hills. I already feel a loss of beautiful scenery. I’m not sure I can describe adequately how free and alive it

Snowboarder Maria Kuzma took second place at the Jasna four-star event. “It was pretty icy and we had to be cautious down the face but all in all it was a good event,” she said.

Fond farewell to athletic coach DANIELLE BUTLER newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz Young athletes are saying goodbye to their coach of three years, Rod Jones, as he leaves Wanaka for Oamaru. “While coaching for the local Aspiring Athletes Club for the past three years is only one chapter in a very colourful life story of our passionate and talented coach Rod Jones, it is one that our local athletes will never forget,” the club said. Rod leaves on a high note, with his junior squad of 13 athletes achieving 45 podium finishes and being named best overall at the Otago Club Championships. The impressive results from the group of seven to 13-year-olds come as a result of hours of training with Rod on block starts, hurdle techniques and running drills. “I’m sad to be leaving. I’ve really enjoyed coaching the kids, it is the most fun I’ve had since

I started coaching in the 1960s. The kids and parents are great and so is the club support,” Rod said.
