Great reputation Proven commitment to quality Fixed contract price Agreed completion times Full project management

You’ve been quoted a price for your brand new home. But do you really know what the price includes?

Commitment to customer service Experienced, friendly team

Some builders may quote a cheaper price for a similar sized home by leaving out so-called ‘extras’ that G.J. Gardner includes as standard.

Quality products Great range of plans

Others may allow what are known as ‘provisional costs’ for certain things such as excavations or foundation design. Often, the amounts are woefully inadequate.

More choice and flexibility

Little things that are overlooked to make it seem like a cheaper price at the start can often lead to unexpected cost over runs in the end.

Independent completion guarantee Unbeatable VALUE

The ‘Comparing Apples with Apples’ builder checklist helps you be sure of the important details by showing you what to look out for.

Your final assurance is this simple fact - more New Zealanders trust g.J. gardner to build their homes than any other builder.

Restaurant responds to parents’ criticism Hot lightbulbs posing a danger to children have been removed DANIELLE BUTLER newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz he owner of a local restaurant in which a baby’s hand was burnt on a floor light has defended his response to the incident following criticism from local parents. Members of Facebook group Wanaka Mums ‘n’ Bubs Trading Post were concerned that Nadia Ellis, the mum of one-year-old Lincoln, had her post warning other parents of the incident removed from the social media site. Wanaka Mums ‘n’ Bubs group admin was forced to remove the post when a manager from Urban Grind Eatery and Bar reported it as “bullying or harassment of

T

an individual or business”. The post was re-added only to be reported and taken down again. Two other mothers have since confirmed that their children have suffered similar injuries at Urban Grind, but owner Gavin Humphrey said that this is the first time such an incident has been brought to his attention and admitted that he didn’t know much about the Facebook post. “The staff member reported it because she felt that although the initial post was fine, the comments which followed turned sour and very hateful. I’ve pointed out that it’s had the Streisand effect, and it was a stupid thing to do.” The post was originally left by Nadia following the incident on Tuesday March 1 in

which her son suffered burns to his fingers and palm from hot floor lights while he was playing by the table. Nadia said that her son began screaming in agony and was taken to the Wanaka Lakes Medical Centre. The worried mother’s Facebook post highlighted that she had returned to the restaurant later that day to speak to the manager on duty. “The manager on duty told me that the owners wouldn’t do anything about it as ‘light bulbs are hot.’ She confirmed that others had been burned,” said Nadia. Dissatisfied with the response she received, Nadia suggested that the restaurant should put up warning signs and informed them that she would be

contacting WorkSafe about the incident. The following day she returned to find that the lights were still on with no warning signs. Gavin said that an incident report has since been filed, but he was not informed of the incident by staff until the morning of Friday March 4. “As soon as I’d heard about what had happened, I said that the lights were dangerous and we needed to get them replaced. I arranged this myself and wasn’t prompted by WorkSafe.” The lights were replaced with LED lights, which generate light at much lower running temperatures than standard light bulbs, last Friday afternoon; a move which Gavin said had satisfied WorkSafe.

Fines for fishing without a licence DANIELLE BUTLER newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz Fish & Game Otago are reminding tourists of licensing rules in New Zealand, following a large increase of overseas visitors trout fishing without licenses this summer, particularly in Wanaka and Hawea. Operations Manager for Fish & Game Otago, Ian Hadland, said that nine overseas visitors are facing prosecution and some have already paid fines, largely for fishing without licences. “New Zealand’s tourist numbers are up and trout fishing is a great thing to do outdoors, but the resource isn’t limitless, and of course we have plenty of New Zealand anglers who’ve bought licences over many years. We have to protect their interests as well,” Ian said. “Naturally we welcome foreign tourists to fish our waters but at the same time, to protect our fisheries, some of the best angling

world-wide, we must enforce the rules.” Visitors are urged to take responsibility and be aware of the rules before they fish. “We’ve seen cases such as three German lads who tried to plead ignorance about the need for a fishing licence when caught angling at Albert Town. Their casual attitude to New Zealand angling has been reshaped by a $500 fine,” Ian said. Fish & Game’s angler compliance checks of back-country rivers in Otago have also turned up disappointing results, with 20 percent of anglers now facing prosecution having been found not to have a back-country licence. Anglers have a responsibility to get a back-country licence and carry it on them before they set off up river. All current whole season licenceholders can obtain a back-country endorsement free of charge via the Fish & Game website.

App answers breastfeeding questions STAFF REPORTER editor@thewanakasun.co.nz A new app is available to answer questions around alcohol and breastfeeding. The Feed Safe app is a free iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch app, which has answers to the most common questions about alcohol and breastfeeding. The app includes a timer. If you decide to have an occasional drink, it uses your height, weight and alcohol intake to accurately estimate when your breastmilk should be free of alcohol, and alert you when this time has been reached. WellSouth has funded the app to bring it to New Zealand. Sarah Berger, Health Promotion Coordinator, WellSouth said it was developed by the Australian Breastfeeding Network, Reach Health Promotion Innovations

and Curtis University. “We approached them to see if we could have it adapted so that it is specific to New Zealand Ministry of Health guidelines and have worked with them to do so,” Sarah said. New Zealand recommendations say that the safest option is to not drink while breastfeeding. If you do want to drink while breastfeeding it is recommended that you avoid doing so until your baby is one month old. Feed Safe includes a handy standard drinks guide, to help you understand how much alcohol is in a range of common drinks. It also contains local contact details for breastfeeding information and support services. The app can be downloaded from the iOS App store. For more information on breastfeeding support across Otago and Southland visit www. breastfeedingsos.co.nz.

Medieval Festival coming to school GLENDA TURNBULL journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz This year Friends of Holy Family School have set their sights on a different style of gala. The Wanaka Medieval Festival will be held at Rippon Hall on November 5. The cultural event will be hands-on with period entertainment and activities the whole family can get involved in. Friends of Holy Family School chairperson Grainne Power said they wanted a change from the standard school gala. “We wanted something completely different. One of our parents lived in France and the village where they lived had a medieval festival which attracts thousands of people each year. The idea grew from that,” Grainne said. The festival aims to create a cultural event that shines a light on an important era in history. The committee wants to showcase local

artisans so they can share their knowledge and skills in ancient crafts through workshops and demonstrations. Among the activities the committee hopes to provide are medieval musical performances, workshops to make medieval-themed costumes and weapons, have a go at town crying and participate in medieval dancing and reenactments. Although the event is still in the planning stages Grainne said the committee wanted to educate the children about medieval times in a fun setting. “The children are interested in medieval games and stories like Game of Thrones and the school are organising a few projects for the children,” Grainne said. Among the attractions organisers hope to have at the show are medieval puppets (pictured). Rippon have kindly donated the venue at their hall and surrounding grounds to run the event.

Man dies in hunting incident near Cromwell STAFF REPORTER editor@thewanakasun.co.nz Police have released the name of the man killed on the Old Woman Range, near Cromwell. He was Gary John Tall, 61, of Cromwell, who had been hunting with a companion during the evening of March 3. Police are investigating the shooting which is not believed to be suspicious. Initial indications are the deceased was alone and his weapon accidentally discharged, striking him in the abdomen.

Emergency services were alerted to the incident shortly before midnight. Both police and ambulance staff performed CPR on the man, however he was unable to be revived. The family of the deceased and his hunting companion have been referred to Victim Support and police are in the process of organising a karakia to take place once the scene has been examined. Detective Sergeant Brian Cameron of Otago Lakes Central CIB said the coroner has been advised of the circumstances and a post mortem examination is to be carried out in Dunedin.

Bubs and Pubs classes for blokes

NASA’s team hopes to break record

STAFF REPORTER editor@thewanakasun.co.nz

PHOTO: GLENDA TURNBULL

GLENDA TURNBULL journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz Wanaka midwife Justine Quirke saw a need for more information for dads about what happens before and after the baby’s arrival and is offering two 90 minute sessions to help them navigate their way through this unfamiliar territory. Justine said, “Bubs and pubs are antenatal classes for blokes where the dads can meet in a relaxed pub setting. They can have a drink, eat some pizza and ask any questions they may have,” Justine said. The classes will be at Fitzpatricks Irish Pub and a local guest dad will come along to each session and share his experience. Topics to be covered will include what dads can do to help with each stage of labour, what

not to say during labour and birth, where you can be in a birthing room, helping to make decisions when your partner is in labour and bonding with your new baby at birth. Justine said birth isn’t just a challenging time for a mum to be, it can also be stressful for the new dad. “These classes are to help encourage partners to be more hands on and to feel more comfortable about how they can be of benefit to their partner during labour and birth,” Justine said. She also takes private antenatal classes for couples who are unable to attend the six week plunket antenatal classes. Justine is pictured with expectant dads Jason Parrant and Richard Jeans, and mentor Curly Allison. To enrol in the classes, email Justine Quirke at Justine_baird@hotmail.com.

Survey to help find solution to housing crisis The Queenstown Lakes Community Housing Trust (QLCHT) is trying to find solutions to the affordable housing crisis in our region. It wants to build a clearer picture of the issues faced by those currently renting through an online renters’ survey. The survey results will provide data that will assist them in finding real and sustainable solutions.

The QLCHT is encouraging all those currently renting in the Queenstown and Wanaka areas, or trying to find somewhere to rent, to visit qlcht.org.nz and spend two to six minutes completing the online survey. All respondents who complete the survey will go into the draw to win one of eight $100 New World vouchers.

Everyone will be looking to the skies over Wanaka Airport on April 1 as NASA’s Balloon Program team prepare for the fourth flight of an 18.8 million-cubic-foot (532,000 cubic metre) balloon, this time with 1025kg payload. After years of tests and development, the team is on the cusp of expanding the envelope in highaltitude, heavy-lifting ballooning with its super pressure balloon (SPB) technology. The team has the ambitious goal of achieving an ultra-long-duration flight of up to 100 days at midlatitudes. Pending final checkouts and flight readiness of the balloon and supporting systems, the launch of the pumpkin-shaped, football stadium-sized balloon is scheduled for sometime after April 1 and will carry payload consisting of tracking, communications and scientific instruments. NASA expects the SPB to circumnavigate the globe once every one to three weeks, depending on wind

speeds in the stratosphere. “We are thrilled to be back in New Zealand for another test flight of this critical, potentially game-changing technology,” Debbie Fairbrother, NASA’s Balloon Program office chief, said. “This could be the flight for the record books.” The first SPB flight from Wanaka, which launched March 26, 2015, flew 32 days, five hours and 51 minutes, taking it nearly around the world in what was the most rigorous test of the SPB to date, according to Debbie. The balloon team will exhibit during the Warbirds Over Wanaka Airshow, providing information on the upcoming mission and guest speaker presentations. Wanaka Airport operations manager Ralph Fegan said, “We’re looking forward to welcoming the team back again this year and are delighted that NASA will play a part in the biennial Warbirds show. With more than 50,000 attendees over three days, the event is the largest Warbird airshow in the southern hemisphere, so associating it with NASA’s new launch program will provide fantastic national and international exposure.”

Three girls and six horses riding from Blenheim to Bluff DANIELLE BUTLER newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz Three adventure-loving girls have dropped everything to undertake their dream journey across the South Island on horse-back. Jade Gilling quit her job as a veterinary nurse in Hawkes Bay to join best friend Blythe Cruickshank on her first journey across the South Island. Just five days before they were due to begin, Blythe’s friend Michelle Creegan-Dougherty travelled from Calgary, Canada, to join them. The girls have the same six horses they started with, despite the daily challenge of keeping them fit and healthy. “Without them we wouldn’t be able to do this, so we have to make sure they stay healthy. The whole journey has been absolutely amazing and the landowners have been incredible. We wouldn’t have been able to do the route we have without their kindness,” Jade said. We won the same trophy for our 2009 pinot noir, so it’s good to know that we’re following it up,” Di said. The six-hectare vineyard occupies a unique site on a terrace above the Clutha River halfway between Wanaka and Cromwell. The name reflects the gentle two-degree slope of the site which encourages the occasional frost to slip away rather than settle on the vines. Two Degrees vines are embedded on stony riverbed soils and enjoy all the intensity of the Central Otago sun, while enhanced by the cool nights.

Rail trail takes top cycle honour STAFF REPORTER editor@thewanakasun.co.nz After nearly 2000 nominations and nearly 10,000 votes the Otago Central Rail Trail has been named New Zealand’s Favourite Place to Cycle. Kiwis voted for their favourite cycle-spot during New Zealand’s annual celebration of cycling, Bike Wise month. Rotorua Redwoods was a close second for the national top honours and the Queenstown Trail was third. As well as the National title, the Otago Central Rail Trail took out the category win for Nga Haerenga - NZ Cycle Trail. Dougal List, National Cycling Manager for the NZ Transport Agency, said the competition is a great chance for Kiwis to showcase their favourite places to cycle. “Throughout Bike Wise Month,

nearly 10,000 votes were cast to help us find NZ’s Favourite Place to Cycle. This demonstrates how many Kiwis love to share their favourite spots around the country,” he said. “The Otago Central Rail Trail is a fantastic track, and is a welldeserved winner of NZ’s Favourite Places to Cycle.” Kate Wilson, Otago Central Rail Trail Trust chairperson, is delighted with the competition’s outcome. “We are so grateful to the voters for the endorsement of the work of the trust, DOC, all the businesses, communities and stakeholders who contribute to the trail being a worldclass experience,” she said. “Being the original Great Ride, we are thrilled to still be recognised today and look forward to releasing some new plans for even better things in the next few months.”

BEN ELMS Wanaka Wastebusters Ben Elms aka Dr Compost (pictured) gives home composting advice and runs composting workshops. The Dr Compost project is funded by Queenstown Lakes District Council and delivered by Wanaka Wastebusters to reduce organic waste going to landfill. And so, as another summer comes to an end, autumn arrives on cue with a frosty reminder of where we live. We’ve had a stinking hot, windy summer, which has been extremely dry, the driest in many a persons’ living memory. And then on March 1, 2016, the first official day of autumn, Jack Frost popped his head up. Most living in built up areas with their micro-climates created by all that thermal mass probably didn’t even notice. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think that makes February the only frost-free month of the 2015/16 growing season in our district. That’s not to say we’re not going to get an awesome Indian summer, with potentially frost-free months ahead, but this all adds up to potentially very testing gardening. Add into the mix water restrictions in some areas and it just gets more interesting. If you’re new to the region you could be forgiven for your confusion in the garden, with veggie plants wilting and bolting. Cold nights coupled with hot days might make great pinot noir, but the humble veggie gardener can be forgiven for pulling his/her hair out in utter hopelessness. So now the bleak picture is painted of our sub-Alpine-slashMediterranean climate I want to tell you all is not lost. So what’s the answer to all this gardening chaos and mayhem? Here’s my three-step plan to the “Holy Grail of Gardening”: Microclimate is king. Modify your garden zone, create raised beds, use frost cloth. Stone, concrete and water hold valuable heat to be released during the cooler nights. Think garden paths, walls, houses and ponds or lakes. Compost. If you do nothing else this is the one thing to do. Apply compost often. Compost improves the water-holding

capacity of soil almost exponentially, and it is full of fungi and bacteria that are the building blocks of soil and plant health. Lime that garden. Calcium is one of the key minerals that plants need. It’s so often forgotten, and is so important for building cell walls, strong roots, disease resistance and increased drought tolerance. Either spread at the same time as you apply compost or put some in your compost when you make it. Dr Compost will be running a free Winter Veggie Workshop on Thursday March 17 at 6pm, and a free Composting Workshop on Thursday March 31 at 6pm, both at the St John’s Rooms, 4 Link Way, Wanaka. Dr Compost will have a stall at the Wanaka A&P Show, near the stage on Pembroke Park.

Equestrian events are main attraction at this year’s show

Catriona Williams guest of honour at Wanaka A&P Show STAFF REPORTER editor@thewanakasun.co.nz

PHOTO:WILD RANGE PHOTOGRAPHY

STAFF REPORTER editor@thewanakasun.co.nz Equestrian events are a key attraction at the Wanaka Show with a full two-day schedule taking place in the Main Ring and Hunt Ring. Events include New Zealand Equestrian Federation competitions, round the ring, local pony and rider classes and in hand classes. Additionally, there is a new showing section this year. The show was selected by the NZ Hack and Pony Council to take part in the “Off the Track Thoroughbred” series event. The Off the Track Thoroughbred section, which takes place on Friday, promotes a useful life after racing for

thoroughbreds. The show’s guest of honour, Catriona Williams, will be judging the event. Each year entry numbers for the equestrian classes increases at the Wanaka Show, with about 290 entries so far this year. Entries come from as far as Kaiapoi to Invercargill. Show livestock manager Fe Howie said she is getting a lot of feedback from competitors who would normally be going to Horse of the Year, saying they want to come to the Wanaka Show as a must-do or bucket-list event. This year for the first time the show has become a qualifying event for Horse of the Year. Pictured: Local woman Lydia Beales, on Koru Kiwi, competing in the 2015 Round The Ring Championship in the Main Ring.

Wanaka A&P Show will host Catriona Williams, a wellknown female in New Zealand equestrian circles. Catriona, who represented New Zealand at Badminton from 1997 to 1999 and the Open European Championships at Burghley in 1999, will be the show’s guest of honour on March 11-12. Ater a horse riding accident left Catriona a C6/C7 tetraplegic in 2002, she has forged a successful career in sport horse breeding with husband Sam’s family stud, Little Avondale, in the Wairarapa. She has also worked extensively with CatWalk Spinal Cord Injury Trust. Catriona will speak at a special CatWalk charity fundraiser tomorrow (Friday, 6.30pm to 9pm). The event, which is open to the public, will be held at the ringside sponsors’ marquee at the Wanaka Showgrounds. Limited tickets, costing $20 per person, are available. She will also declare the show ‘open’ on Saturday, March 12. “A&P shows are really important to horse riders – there’s a lot of prestige around doing well at A&P shows and people have high expectations. The Wanaka Show precedes itself, and that’s why I’m so excited to come down,”

Catriona said. Wanaka Show coordinator Jane Stalker said she’s thrilled that someone of Catriona’s calibre is so keen to come to the show. “It’s an honour to have Catriona here for the Wanaka Show. We know she’ll be a big drawcard for the hundreds of horse riders competing here, but her inspirational story also has wider public appeal,” she said. The 2016 Wanaka show is the 79th annual event. Shearer shows crowds more than 40 years of experience DANIELLE BUTLER newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz Marty Cornish has an impressive claim to fame, and one that makes him an asset to the A&P Show’s shearing demonstrations. In his long career as a shearer, he has racked up an impressive, and undoubtedly rare total of more than 1.2 million sheep shorn, earning him the title of local legend. “I don’t think there will be too many people that have shorn that many sheep. It’s just what I’ve always done,” Marty said. This figure reflects Marty’s time overseas, and does not even take into account the further 200,000 sheep shorn since he returned to New Zealand in 1994. Beginning in New Zealand on a farm in 1970, Marty shortly afterwards took up an apprenticeship and started a full-time career as a shearer. This career lead him all over the world, completing nine seasons overseas in Australia, America and the UK.

Marty now lives at Hawea Flat and has downsized his flock considerably over the past 20 years from 5000 to around 400, with this year’s A&P Show being the first time he has held a public demonstration. Specialising in the shearing of ultra superfine merino, Marty requires a different set of skills to that of other sheep shearing. “Merino shearing is totally different. It takes real skill to pick up and keep hold of the skin of the merinos. It’s a whole different ball game.” Marty shears his merino sheep each spring, yielding superfine merino wool between 13 to 17.5 microns. Merino sheep are one of the oldest breeds in the world, and are historically raised for the desirability of their fine wool. Marty will be showcasing his skills at the show on Friday, March 11, shearing ultra superfine merino sheep from Forest Range Station in the Lindis Pass. Visitors will be able to see him at the Mount Iron Ring on Pembroke Park from midday and 2pm.

Police tractor on display at show GLENDA TURNBULL journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz A new police-branded New Holland tractor will be on display at the Wanaka A&P Show this weekend to promote discussion about rural crime. Wanaka Police constable Mike Thomas said the tractor first appeared at Mystery Creek field days to engage with the rural sector as part of the Prevention First Strategy. “We’ve managed to get it down for the show at short notice. It’s been a very popular attraction at the field days and A&P shows.” “Officers will be on hand to discuss issues that rural residents have, including property, vehicles and being safe around firearms with a view to reducing rural crime,” Mike said.

The tractor is on loan from CB Norwood Distributors and will be coming from Christchurch on Thursday and after the show will be heading back to central field days in Palmerston North. The tractor will be situated near the main office, with show attendees able to look through the tractor. It will also be in the Saturday parade. Inspector Paul Carpenter said, "Rural areas present unique challenges for police such as longer travelling distances and lack of cell phone and radio networks.” "Add to that, tactics that may work in large urban centres may not work that well in a rural setting, but the key thing is, police need to know about incidents and rural residents need to feel comfortable reporting issues to us." Police will be on hand to talk to people about rural crime prevention.

German tourist volunteers at show Should supplier branding exceed the area shown here please contact Head Office for guidance.

GLENDA TURNBULL journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz When German tourist Lucas Koestr walked into Wanaka last week he was expecting a completely different experience. A chance meeting with Paul Tamati ended with him helping out at the Wanaka A&P Show for the week. Lucas met Paul Tamati by Pembroke Park last week and Lucas asked him what event was going to be on. Paul told him he was setting up for the Wanaka A&P Show and asked Lucas if he would like to help. “He asked me to give him a helping hand and I said yes,” Lucas said. The next thing he knew he’d been invited to stay at Paul’s place for the week in return for helping him set up the trade show section of the show. Paul Tamati has been volunteering as trade show marshall for the past eight years and has a crew of around ten guys that help get the trade show up and running. Paul loves helping out at the show and said he does it because he belongs to the community. “If you live here and are passionate about where you live you want to give back to the community. And I have a great team to help me do it. I also get

great support from Peter Williams. He’s my right hand man,” Paul said. He said each year he usually grabs a tourist off the street and ropes them into helping and he offers them a bed for the week. With more than 450 exhibitors at the show this year, Paul and his team started on March 3 to mark out the trade section and get power to all the sites. He takes the ten days off from work to do his role. “It has just become so much bigger, but I just love it,” Paul said. Lucas said it was pretty cool to be part of such a big event. “I am meeting different kiwi people and it is cool to see how it comes together from the flat ground to the finished event. It just happened out of nowhere. I was prepared for a week of sightsee16 | L a n d m a r k H o m e s ing, swimming and looking around and I ended up here. It was just by chance that I met Paul. I am going to remember this for a really long time,” Lucas said. Lucas has been travelling in New Zealand since October and will be travelling around the country until May. Flying boat takes to the skies

PHOTO: SUPPLIED

STAFF REPORTER editor@thewanakasun.co.nz Four years, $350,000 and 10,000 volunteer hours later, New Zealand’s only airworthy Catalina Flying Boat has taken to the skies again in preparation for display at this Easter’s Warbirds Over Wanaka International Airshow. Catalina chief pilot, Brett Emeny, said it was a big moment for the team which has worked tirelessly on what turned out to be a major refurbishment project for the 70 year old aircraft. “Around four years ago we noticed some deterioration on the backs of the wings and the

decision was made to get the Catalina into a hangar and repair them. As so often happens with these projects one thing led to another and before long we had refurbished the whole aircraft inside and out,” Brett said. The Catalina will land on Lake Wanaka along with other amphibious aircraft as part of the Warbirds Over Wanaka lakeside event on the Friday afternoon. The Warbirds Over Wanaka International Airshow is expected to attract a crowd of around 50,000 people over the Easter weekend. Aspiring Conversations tickets popular DANIELLE BUTLER newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz Tickets for Wanaka’s Aspiring Conversations Festival are selling quickly, with one talk already completely sold out. On sale since February 26, tickets have already almost surpassed the total sold in the entire lead-in period to the first stand-alone Aspiring Conversations Festival in 2014. “Last time we were really pleased, but this time tickets have been going like a rocket. It’s a sign that the festival is really working for all

of the community,” festival director, Philip Tremewan, said. Aspiring Conversations takes place from April 22 to April 24 and will feature a line up of speakers and panels designed to inspire the mind on current, controversial and interesting topics. “Moods, microbes and the gut” by professor Mike Berridge, pictured, has sold out, with tickets to “cool it! Dealing with climate change” and “dust to dusky” also selling quickly. Tickets are available online at aspiringconversations.co.nz. The Lake Wanaka box office reopens for ticket sales on April 22.

The Pembroke Swill Wine highlights by John Hallum

Autumn is a pretty special time of year in Wanaka and these golden days call for a sauvignon blanc with a bit of oomph. Evoking smooth fruit richness and aromas, the accolades are piling up for Starborough Family Estate Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2015. Recently awarded Best White Wine Buy of the Year in Michael Cooper’s Buyer’s Guide 2016, along with a bundle of gold medals, this “pure and classy” wine suits the early Autumn palate. March also heralds the start of the Bluff Oyster season, which sends seafood aficionados into an annual frenzy. We at Pembroke Wines are no different – we’ve been shaking with anticipation for the first catch to make its way inland to Wanaka. As the autumn colours roll in, let us treat you to a couple of glasses of sauvignon blanc and half a dozen Bluffies for only $25. The limey tartness of the Starborough cuts through the creamy rich flavours of the wild

Southern delicacy and we reckon our wine and oyster special is the one to beat. Enjoy the cosy combination of wine and oysters while they last!

Easter exhibition ‘4 Play with Art’ GLENDA TURNBULL journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz An exhibition called “4 Play with Art” will be on over the Easter Weekend at the Masonic Lodge in Dunmore Street. Four women, Belinda Innes, Sharlene Nyhon, Lizzie Carruthers and Jenny Chisholm are all longterm residents, with Lizzie, Jenny and Sharlene all attending art lessons together in Bannockburn. Belinda trained as a teacher specialising in both art and music and has been a guest artist at several exhibitions in the South Island and USA. At present she is sharing a studio in Gordon Road with four other artists. Belinda now concentrates on painting still life, abstract, figures and most recently, collage and paint-on-box panels. Sharlene has been painting for more than ten years, and over the last two years has divided her time between painting and farming. She specialises in oil landscapes and this will be the most original artworks she has shown in one exhibition. THURSDAY 10.03.16 - WEDNESDAY 16.03.16

Lizzie is also a farmer/artist and is new to painting, but has been drawing for most of her life. Her works are predominantly animal portraits. Jenny has been a landscape painter for the past 15 years. She spent a number of years living and working overseas. After several short courses and one year of full-time study in art, craft and design she decided in 1998 to pursue her art on a fulltime basis. In 2004 Jenny illustrated the best seller children’s book - Shrek the famous hermit sheep of Tarras. Belinda said Mason Gordon Girvan had been very accommodating. “Artists are notoriously hopeless at marketing themselves and getting their work out in front to the public gaze, so this exhibition, which we are very privileged to be able to hold at the Wanaka Masonic Lodge, is a great opportunity for four very individual painters to show their efforts,” Belinda said. The exhibition runs from March 25-28, and is open from 10am to 5pm daily. THE WANAKA SUN

New Zealand Commonwealth Games team mates, Anton Cooper and Kate Fluker, won the twelfth annual Macpac Motatapu Event held in Wanaka and Arrowtown on Saturday. The event traverses the Motatapu, Soho and Glencoe Stations across a course open only once a year for the Motatapu

event. The Ultra Run kicked off under the light of the moon at 6am, while the UDC Finance XTERRA triathletes began their swim in a calm Lake Wanaka just after sunrise. The Skoda Elite Mountain Bikers, more than 1800 of them, then took to the course, followed by the marathon runners and walkers. The Miner’s Trail competitors headed onto the new course from Wilcox Green, Arrowtown. Fifteenyear-old Phoebe Young of Wanaka was

placed second overall in the women’s category and first in the junior female category in the mountain bike event. "The descent was quite scary, but I checked out the rivers a week or so ago, so I knew what I had to expect and quite enjoyed it,” Phoebe said. “It's my first time doing this race, but I think I'll do it again next year. I wanted to catch Anton Cooper, but that didn't quite happen." She completed the race in 2:23:16.

This year will see the end of the villa development at the Aspiring Lifestyle Retirement Village. The final stage which is selling now, is made up of stand-alone two and three bedroom villas set within beautifully landscaped gardens designed to provide privacy and outlook to all villas. Be in quick to get your chance to make decisions on the colour scheme of your choice. As well as enjoying living in a beautiful home, you will have: • A holiday lifestyle on your doorstep all year round – with a heated indoor swimming pool, spa, tai-chi, cinema, bar, library, lounges, gym, chip and putt, BBQ courtyard and much more… • Priority access to care if you need it in the first stage of the Aspiring Enliven Care Centre which will open later this year – including rest home, hospital and dementia care. • Some completed villas available for immediate occupancy. Priced from $425,000*.

No more beersies. Here’s another one for crimeline - i found a guy asleep on the kitchen floor, fridge wide open, leftovers all over his face. His hungover got worse when I woke him up with a pot of cold water over his head.

Not a rodeo fan but I think you lose your audience when you liken it to men chasing children around a ring. A well made argument is always better received.

Rodeos are well regulated. Animals are athletes and treated as such!

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR editor@thewanakasun.co.nz Sponsored by

Rules and regulations protect rodeo animals

In response to Claire Insley’s Letter to the Editor (March 3, 2016). Can I ask if Claire has attended a rodeo, approached anyone involved with the sport such as board representatives of the NZ Rodeo Cowboys Association, or committee members at Wanaka rodeo level to discuss her concerns? Maybe this would help clarification. A rodeo does not just happen, strict animal welfare rules and regulations must be adhered to for the protection of animals. At every rodeo animals are vet checked before and after the performances. It is quoted that at Richmond Rodeo a bull broke a leg. Yes this did happen. Like humans out walking, biking, skiing or simply enjoying, legs get broken - accidents happen. Unfortunately bulls break legs in farm paddocks. The Richmond bull was one of hundreds competed on during the 35 rodeos throughout New Zealand of which thousands of people attend and enjoy. Can I ask what 40 percent of wildlife being killed off unnecessarily since the 1970s, using dogs and cats at rodeos, and chasing a child round a ring by a guy on horseback, has to do with rodeo? To the question: “Is this animal having fun?” Answer, yes the bucking horses and bulls love what they do. The athletic ability of the horse is demonstrated by the bucking freedom they are allowed. Some horses are bred for the purpose of the sport, others used are saved from pet food tins as they will not be tamed. These horses are valued by their contractors and all who know and understand their ability. They are used eight seconds a ride maybe three

or four times a year. The remainder of the year is spent happily grazing. The bulls are mainly Brahman, purposely bred, and again contracted. Man against beast - and if you watch carefully, many stop on hearing the eight-second time bell - they love to win. Regarding the time event stock, it is part of NZ heritage to catch stock in a paddock (maybe to treat an animal for a health problem). The individual owner/contestants are proud of their own treasured horses and the way they are presented at a rodeo is outstanding. Hundreds of hours are spent on training and tutoring before you see competitors in the arena. Same goes for the barrel-racing girls. 100ths of a second often determines place getters and these animals are mainly quarter horses, bred for speed over a quarter mile, and yes this is a skilled and entertaining event. I take exception to the wording used in the letter “torture, abuse and the treatment stock get”. How unfortunate that rodeo is targeted by those who do not have any understanding of the skills of both stock and competitors in this sport. To be more enlightened, go along after the A&P Show and make your own assessment if there is any doubt over welfare issues. Maybe predetermined views and comments could be better understood by attending. Any problems seen, please find a knowledgeable member of the Wanaka Rodeo Club to have a chat after the event is over. If one chooses an urban lifestyle with idealistic beliefs that’s fine, but uninformed facts and emotive protest via the media against rural activities becomes a sad day for rural NZ. Helen McCarthy

STAFF REPORTER sports@thewanakasun.co.nz Sit-skier Corey Peters claimed the overall super-G crystal globe after wins at the IPC Alpine Skiing World Cup Finals in Aspen, USA. “This is such a cool way to finish off the 2015/16 World Cup season with another gold in the final super-G giving me the overall title,” Corey said. “It was a tight race with only 0.28 seconds in it, the course set was a challenging one but it made for some great competition.” Corey, pictured, is also the reigning World Champion in the super-G. Wanaka triathlete Nicky Samuels returned to competition in the elite women’s race of the 2016 ITU World Triathlon Series in Abu Dhabi last weekend. Nicky missed the 2015 season because of an ongoing problem

with her left iliotibial band which required surgery. She hasn’t raced since August 2014 and said the race was “all about blowing out the cobwebs”. She finished in 20th position in a time of 1.58:11.

Christy withdraws from women’s slopestyle finals in US Open New Zealand’s top female snowboarder, Christy Prior, had to withdraw from the women’s slopestyle finals at the Burton US

Open in Aspen after spraining both ankles in training. She expects to be back training on snow very soon.
