Warbirds Over Wanaka International Airshow kicks off on Good Friday. Road closures may affect residents travelling to and from Hawea and Luggate into Wanaka this weekend. State Highway 6 between Mount Iron and Luggate Intersection will be closed to all non-airshow traffic on Saturday March 26 and Sunday March 27 between 9am and 11am and 3pm and 5pm. The roads will be open to all traffic at all other times. Detour and alternative routes will be sign-posted.

NASA balloon taking flight GLENDA TURNBULL journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz NASA’s scientific balloon experts are in Wanaka preparing for the fourth flight of its 532,000 cubic-metre balloon, aiming to achieve an ultra-long-duration flight of up to 100 days at mid-latitudes. Launch of the pumpkin-shaped, football stadium-sized balloon launch is scheduled for sometime after April 1 from Wanaka Airport, pending final checkouts. At a meeting for residents affected by the balloon lift-off, around 60 people were addressed by NASA’s balloon program office

chief Debbie Fairbrother who said the team were thrilled to be back in New Zealand for another test flight. “Wanaka is the best place for this lift-off and we are so keen to be back here. The last flight was a great success and our aim for this flight is to get to 100 days flight. If we get to 100 days I will dance a jig.” Debbie said. After the successful launch in 2015, NASA confirmed Wanaka as one of its global sites to launch unmanned scientific research balloons into near space. Wanaka was chosen because of its low population and the access to logistics required to launch the balloon.
This time the balloon will carry the University of California, Berkeley’s Compton Spectrometer and Imager (COSI) payload. COSI will investigate longstanding mysteries of the universe, such as those surrounding the births and deaths of stars, positrons, pulsars and black holes. A team of ten scientists will be on-site working with NASA to launch and monitor the payload. NASA’s balloons are constructed of polyethylene film, which is the material found in plastic bags. The film for this balloon is only 0.0038 centimetres thick, about the same thickness as an ordinary sandwich wrap. The film is divided into 280

banana peel shaped sections. The balloon will be connected to a crane (pictured on page 3) and partially inflated with helium at Wanaka Airport. As it rises, the lower atmospheric pressures will cause the balloon to fully inflate. It will rise at approximately 300m per minute and travel to around 33.5km. It will take about two to three hours to reach this float altitude. As the balloon travels around Earth, it may be visible from the ground, particularly at sunrise and sunset, to those who live in the southern hemisphere’s mid-latitudes, such as New Zealand, Argentina, Australia and South Africa. Speak up, there is a way through GLENDA TURNBULL journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz When everything seems too much and you don’t know where to turn, it is good to know there is a range of services in Wanaka to help and assist people find a way through and they are only a phone call away. The statistics on suicide deaths in New Zealand are alarming. Five hundred and sixty-four people died by suicide in the 2014/15 year, the highest rate since the provisional statistics were first recorded for the 2007/08 year. The words depression and suicide are not ones a lot of people like to talk about, but Kate Murray from Community Networks said there are many services in the region that assist people who are feeling down, tired, stressed, anxious or angry. “In the first instance we would direct a person to their local general practitioner (GP).They will be able to advise them of the services available or refer them to a service that would best meet their needs at the time,” Kate said. WellSouth team leader Tina Simmonds said the Brief Intervention Primary Mental Health
Service is a primary mental health service which sees people experiencing difficulties with their mental health, generally for people experiencing mild to moderate symptoms of anxiety and depression or problems with alcohol or drugs without dependence. “We predominantly see people referred by their GP, midwife or public health nurses. The Wanaka general practices offer 24/7 cover if required, so help is always available to patients even after hours or on weekends,” Tina said. WellSouth also provide a free and confidential Youth Mental Health Service for young people aged 12 to 19. Up to eight appointments are offered with one of their clinicians. Appointments can be made at their offices, school or home. For crisis support, if the person is at high risk contact Mental Health Services on 0800 467846. Other support services include Tautoko Suicide Crisis support line 0508 828 865 and Depression Support Line 0800 111 757. INBRIEF Man released on bail after firearm charges
A 33-year-old man appeared in the Queenstown District Court on Monday March 21 facing one charge of discharging a firearm and five charges of unlawfully possessing a firearm. Senior Sergeant Craig Dinnissen said a Dunedin-based armed offenders squad was called to the incident after a gun was discharged during a domestic dispute between neighbours in Queensberry. The incident occurred at 1.30am on Saturday. It was unclear what the dispute was over or what caused a shot to be fired. The man was released on strict bail conditions.

Event expected to WOW crowds GLENDA TURNBULL journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz The long awaited Warbirds Over Wanaka International Airshow kicks off on Good Friday with ground displays available for aviation enthusiasts. Later on the Friday attention will turn to the Wanaka lakefront for the ‘Warbirds On the Lake’ event. This free community event drew a crowd of many thousands at the last airshow and it is expected to be a hit with the public this time around. A huge crowd is expected to flock to the Wanaka foreshore to see aircraft in action over the water.
Warbirds over Wanaka general manager Ed Taylor said, “We have the mighty Catalina Flying Boat leading a flotilla of amphibious aircraft which will all land on the lake. We have a couple of other acts also lined up for this event which kicks off at 4.30pm.” “Local community groups will be in the Wanaka Mitre 10 marquee on the lakefront raising money for their groups through various food stalls. Also we’ll have our commentary team, headed by Jim Hickey, down there keeping everyone informed,” Ed said. Pictured are troops firing a cannon from the 2014 event.
Private water ski lake proposal DANIELLE BUTLER newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz Wanaka Water Ski Club has presented a proposal to Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) for the development of its own private lake. Club representatives Mark Williams and Gerald Harraway told Wanaka Community Board that they felt the 700m long, 70m wide lake would be an excellent use of the land beside a proposed salmon farm near the confluence of the Clutha and Cardrona rivers. Plans to excavate the land and develop the lake would be fully funded by the club, whose members hope the council will back their plan and allow them to use the land. “It is clear that there is considerable talent in the sport and within our community. With the right facilities and coaching support we could provide training for regional and national competitions, even bringing our skiers to international standards. We believe that with the council’s support this will be an asset to the
town,” Mark said. The club currently holds regular tournaments at its Paddock Bay site, but is concerned that an increase in boat use on Lake Wanaka meant that it was not an ideal place to train new or developing water skiers. Currently, around 40 active members would benefit from the proposal, but the club is keen to expand and also plans to open the lake up to public use for activities such as after-school clubs. Gerald responded to concerns raised about noise by stating that only one boat would be used on the lake at a time and noise readings taken at other lakes had not exceeded 48 decibels, no louder than light traffic. With regards to the land coming under a “no build zone”, Gerald added that the club would not need any large buildings, and that the majority of the land could continue to be used for grazing. Wanaka Community Board chairwoman Rachel Brown thanked the men for a well-considered proposal, adding that it would be subject to further discussion.

SOF recognised at awards STAFF REPORTER editor@thewanakasun.co.nz Shaping Our Future have returned home after representing the Queenstown Lakes volunteer community in Dunedin over the weekend at this year’s Trustpower National Community Awards. Representative Kathy Dedo and fellow volunteer AJ Mason took the community district planning group head-to-head with the country’s best and brightest volunteer groups and projects. Shaping Our Future came out on top at the awards last year, beating dozens of other local voluntary organisations for their efforts to provide local residents with a voice in the development of their beautiful region. Trustpower community relations representative Arielle Monk said that although the group did not
come away as award recipients the work completed, and still being undertaken, by the group shouldn’t be forgotten or discounted. “Kathy, AJ, David Kennedy and heaps of other awesome volunteers are truly committed to cultivating the best future they can possibly envision for their district. They might not get to see the fruit of all their labours in the next ten, 20 years even, but they’re providing a community voice in future planning that will hopefully benefit the next generation,” Arielle said. The West Otago Health Trust, representing the Clutha District, was named supreme winner and Youth in Emergency YES, a group representing Rotorua Lakes District, was named runner-up. With a career spanning almost 20 years, Hollie Smith’s distinctive and powerful voice has earned her the title of Aotearoa’s first lady of jazz and soul, and the release of her third album brings her to Wanaka next week. Hollie’s third solo offering, Water or Gold, will be performed at a variety of venues across the country, starting with Twizel on March 31, before she heads to Albert Town Tavern on April 1. “Wanaka is one of the first places I’m coming to, so the audience will be among the first people in the world to hear the album performed live,” Hollie said. This album sees Hollie inch into new territory as she introduces rollicking rock and blues to her well known jazz and soul sound. “It’s a little bit more energetic, and a little bit different to play live. I’m quite looking forward to seeing how it all comes together,” Hollie said. The 11 songs that make up Water or Gold were written over a couple of years, and span both times of joy and times of sadness in Hollie’s life. A lot of that joy, she explains, comes from helping to raise the son of her now ex-partner, which accounts for some of the album’s uplifting moments. Also included is Hollie’s heartbreaking tribute to her good friend and media personality, Helena McAlpine, who died in 2015 after a long battle with breast cancer. ‘Helena’ captures the strength of Hollie’s vocals, as well as the strength of a longstanding friendship. “I performed the song a couple of weeks after she passed away. I thought it was going to be challenging but it ended up being the other way around. I went all in and got completely lost in

The airport was named NZ Regional Airport of the Year 2015 as a result of its work in facilitating the successful completion of NASA’s
inaugural balloon launch in March 2015. Debbie Fairbrother presented Wanaka Airport manager Ralph Fegan with a NASA award acknowledging the “exceptional achievement” of an enabling team. The long wait for additional internet services in Hawea is over with Chorus currently upgrading the broadband infrastructure in the area. The Wanaka Sun was contacted by a local resident who had recently moved to Hawea and had tried to get internet access at his Hawea address. He was told there were no access points available in Hawea at the moment and to go on the waiting list he would need to sign up for a landline connection, at an additional cost of $60 per month, something he did not want and could not afford. After speaking with both Spark and Vodafone, the Wanaka Sun was directed to Chorus.

Chorus communications officer Nathan Beaumont said, “I have some good news. We are currently upgrading the broadband infrastructure in this area. All going well the work should be finished early next week. The best part of this news is that following the upgrade they should be able to get VDSL which is the fastest service available on our copper network.” At the moment the average speed on the copper network is about 50Mbps which is very fast. Nathan said once the cabinet is upgraded Chorus will be able to add capacity as needed so anyone who wants a service will be able to get one. “If residents phone their internet service provider next week they should be able to get them sorted,” he said.

Method Dissolve½ tsp dried yeast with 2 tsp brown sugar, 85ml milk and 85ml water. Sarah Ballard, whose girls are two years old and eight months old, has appealed for volunteers in her quest to have the playgroup open again after the Easter holidays. “I have to travel to Wanaka to go to a playgroup, which isn’t that far, but it would be nice to have something closer, as I’m a very busy mum. There
are a lot of wee children in the area and I’ve had a good response so far, so there is definitely a demand for it,” Sarah said. Sarah has so far received several responses from volunteers, advice from the old playgroup’s committee members and help from Plunket. She is currently in the process of finding a venue for the group. “There has been a lot of support from the community so hopefully it will all go ahead,” Sarah said. Schools and arts grants Colours of autumn celebrated STAFF REPORTER editor@thewanakasun.co.nz Local schools and arts projects have benefited from eight grants approved by the Central Lakes Trust this month, equalling a total of $208,000. As part of the Central Lakes Trust programme to support defibrillators being installed in high foottraffic areas that are accessible to the general public, Mount Aspiring College received $2063 to help purchase a new defibrillator. “Recent first aid courses held at the school have highlighted the improved results in comparison to CPR. While our students themselves are at low risk of cardiac arrest, our staff and many community users at the college are not. Students, staff and the many outside of school hours community users will all benefit from the installation of a defibrillator at the
college,” principal Wayne Bosley said. Disability Information Service received $2000 to help facilitate a public health and disability expo at Dunstan High School. “We have been able to book the neuroscience “walk through” blow-up brain as an added drawcard. Our service acts as the hub for all individuals, agencies and services in the Otago region,” Sally Jane Cranfield, Disability Information Service manager, said. The Southern Lakes Arts Festival Trust also benefited, with a grant of $60,000 going towards the development of the Festival of Colour programme in April next year. Central Lakes Trust also approved operational funding to the Kahu Youth Trust of $57,500 and a Guarantee Against Loss of $5000 was approved to the NZ Mountain Film Festival Charitable Trust for its 2016 Film and Book Festival.

A collection of photographs showing an autumnal Wanaka and the southern lakes is to be launched in a new book today, Thursday March 24. Autumn Colours of Wanaka and the Southern Lakes has been put together by French Wanakabased photographer Thierry Huet, who has been taking and selling his photographs in the town for more than 20 years, but decided it was time to go a step further with the book. “There are millions of photographers out there now doing digital stuff, so I thought it would be nice to make my own book for a bit more exposure. It’s a big step forward,” Thierry said. The book, printed in Christchurch, has been a couple of years in the making, but Thierry said he wanted to be ready with his best images before it was finalised. “This is a beautiful time of year in Wanaka and the southern lakes region. It is my favourite time of year, and a very busy time for me as it is so beautiful. I wanted to tell a story through the book, taking people from one place to another to show them the colours we have here, through autumn and into winter.”

The exhibition will be held at Wanaka Primary School gymnasium, from March 25 to 28, with a daily entrance fee of $5. Easter weekend is set to be creative once more with Wanaka Arts Society’s annual Easter exhibition, this year with a wings theme, to tie in with Warbirds Over Wanaka. With more than 200 entries, president Jo Nimmo said that she was very impressed with the quality and cross-section of artwork that the society had received. “People will need to take their time at the exhibition. Not many people got out in under an hour last year. There’s plenty to see for everybody,� Jo said.

iD Fashion Show Highlights TRUDIE MILLAR Personal stylist It is always a treat to attend iD Fashion Show, and this year I was invited as media, so I had a great viewpoint. From the fairy lights, to the crisp South Island air, the show was wonderfully put together. It is the intimate atmosphere I enjoy at iD - seeing familiar faces and having the runway close - that makes it so enjoyable. We are privileged to have many wonderful New Zealand designers showcased at this event. International designer Emilia Wickstead was outstanding. It was no surprise that her designs are adored by Kate Middleton. She clearly understands how to dress the female body, with her impeccable tailoring and the art of gathering to create beautiful silhouettes. Her use of florals and colours such as apricot and pistachio were lovely. I must admit, when Tanya Carlson opened the night with a show-stopping collection of 1970s bohemian glamour and felted coats, I was in heaven. I personally love this style so it was a big tick from me. Winter colour trends were presented throughout the collections such as burgundy, black, purple, olive green, mustard, pastel and neutrals such as grey, beige, white and blush. I loved the presence of
high-detailed funnel necklines, choker styles, scarves and floppy leather hats, even a turban influence for headwear. Hairstyles were parted strongly down the middle, with the hair loosely out and crinkled half way down or straightened. Some had loose, relaxed, side ponytails. The make-up was beautiful and understated. The shoes were much more stable than previous years which helped prevent any mishaps. This runway is no easy feat. NOM*d owned the catwalk with a strong presence and was exceptionally well put together. It was also wonderful to have Zambesi and Kate Sylvester feature this year. It seems iD is becoming more recognised and established each year. Local designer Christina Perriam featured her designs that were beautifully styled. What had me grinning from ear to ear was the iD award designers. I thoroughly enjoyed their creative imagination, especially the use of toy “slinkys�. Air New Zealand hostesses made a surprise appearance strutting the runway at the finale. It was wonderful to see the designers walk with their models at the end of the evening with smiles on their faces for a well deserved round of applause. A fabulous evening. GLENDA TURNBULL journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz A group of Wellington-based cyclists is riding from Christchurch to Queenstown in a bid to raise more than $150,000 for KidsCan Charitable Trust. The Wanaka Sun caught up with the group in Wanaka on their last stop before their final grunt to the finish line, at the top of Coronet Peak in Queenstown. By the time you read this article the Fat Fathers Club (FFC) Racing Team will have travelled 700km through the South Island, climbing 6500 vertical metres on the journey. Group spokesman Gary Baird said their club name was given to them by their wives and children when they first started sporting lycra. “The name stuck and we have been riding together for quite a while now. Many of us had not been on a tour before and about a year ago we decided to organise one. We decided if we were going to do it, we would do it for a good cause,” Gary said. The group chose KidsCan, a charity that assists New Zealand children living in hardship. “Many of our group have kids and so we selected KidsCan to help kids that are less fortunate than our children. Hopefully it will give them an opportunity to reach their full potential,” Gary said. Charity recipient KidsCan supports more than 114,000 children in 530 low decile schools nationwide with food, raincoats, shoes and basic health and
hygiene products. However, the charity is still seeing the need for its support increasing, with 305,000 (two in five) Kiwi kids living in hardship and 14 schools on its waiting list. KidsCan’s CEO and co-founder Julie Chapman said, “We are absolutely thrilled to be working with the FFC Racing Team. Funds raised will enable KidsCan to do even more for the Kiwi kids we currently support around the country, including bringing some new schools off our waiting list.” For every $50,000 the group raises KidsCan will be able to take a school off the waiting list and permanently add them to the programme. At the time of writing the group had raised $140,000. With the most gruelling leg of the trip in front of them Gary said they had tried to make the ride as challenging as they could. From a core group of 15 friends, the group has swelled to 34 riders for this adventure. “We have 34 riders that have come together for this tour. Some of them will find the last leg more challenging than others. There are some who really want to push themselves and others that just want to finish the ride,” Gary said. The group has focused on safety and has had two tail vehicles and one lead vehicle. “The support team has just been phenomenal. One of the guys had broken spokes on his bike and the support group drove from Tekapo to Timaru to get replacement parts. They even drove

though to Wanaka last night to get a hire bike and then drove back to Omarama so that someone could continue their journey. We couldn’t have asked for a more professional support team,” Gary said. Nests three and four have hatched their eggs (a total of four chicks) and nest eight with its single egg has failed, signalling the end of the breeding season in which 87 chicks have been fledged from 43 clutches since June of last year. The last two hatchings were timed superbly for the visit of almost 130 Grebelets from both of our local primary schools. It was a real pleasure to meet them all and to know that the future of the lake and its wildlife are in great hands. It has been a long breeding season of almost nine months with little time for a rest. I am not sure if it is good news or bad news, but I noticed a bird (the only one left around the marina) lurking around nest seven this last Sunday. It is the nest seven birds that are the founding pair of the marina clan and started breeding on June 21, 2014 and last year on June 6! In the not too distant future, talks on the Lake Front Management Plan will be up for discussion. It would be nice to think that we can do something better with that bit of land that borders on the marina. I have made a submission, have a look at the plan and see what you think? This is a good time to call things to an end for this season as we retire to carry out long overdue maintenance and repairs on platforms. The added good news is that I have it that students at Mount Aspiring College will be building four replacement platforms.

STAFF REPORTER sports@thewanakasun.co.nz Freeskiing brothers Miguel and Nico Porteous had a successful day at the US Revolution Tour halfpipe competition at Seven Springs Resort, USA, on Thursday. Miguel won the competition and Nico’s fourth place finish earned him the overall FIS NorAm season title for halfpipe. Miguel and Nico put down strong runs on their first of two attempts. Nico was initially sitting in second
place after the first run with a score of 85.75 behind Canadian Ryan Malone on 88.25. Miguel took gold with his second run score of 90.50 while Cameron Brodrick of the USA knocked Nico into fourth place, with an 86.25 on his second run. With wins at the Copper Mountain Rev Tour in December 2015 and at the Calgary NorAM in February, Nico’s fourth place points placed him at the top of the FIS freeski halfpipe NorAM rankings for the season. Miguel was ranked second overall.

SPORT IN BRIEF Cardrona champions crowned Mountain-bikers contested a challenging 4km loop course, with 226m elevation per lap, at the Cardrona Bike Park last weekend for the New Zealand Championships in cross-country and downhill. Rio Olympic mountain-bike hopeful Sam Gaze and Glasgow Commonwealth Games representative Kate Fluker took out the national elite titles. World under-23 champion Anton Cooper came in second in the men’s field after losing a minute changing his punctured front tyre. The national championships and this weekend’s Oceania Championships in Queenstown will be included in consideration for Rio Olympic selection, as well as the upcoming UCI World Cup races in Australia and Germany.

The 22-strong rowing team qualified for ten A finals and seven B finals and won one silver medal and one bronze medal. Riley Bruce rowed into second place in a tough race in the boys under-18 single sculls. He then teamed up with Lucas Toovey in the boys under-18 double sculls. In a tight race, the local boys won a bronze medal. Riley also teamed up
with Finn Hunter to row in the coxless pairs event for the first time. They were placed fifth overall. Sam Pearce was placed second, with a personal best time of 8:08.67, in the B final of the boys under-16 single scull . Senior girls Riley Homan and Bridie Hurley rowed well to make the A final in the girls under-18 single sculls placing fourth and sixth respectively. They joined forces for the girls under-18 double sculls and were placed fifth. The under-15 girls crew of Samantha Garrick, Greer Porter, Hannah Humphreys and novice Kilita Fouchee, coxed

New gallery conveyer tunnel and beginner trail GLENDA TURNBULL journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz The beginner’s experience at Cardrona Alpine Resort will be expanded this coming season with a brand new beginner trail and New Zealand’s first “Gallery” conveyer lift tunnel. The Sun Kids Gallery enclosure is a see-through tunnel that will sit over the top of Cardrona’s existing main learners’ slope conveyer. It will protect skiers and snowboarders from the harsh mountain elements, while still giving them the experience and views that Cardrona is famous for. Snow delays the opening of the long beginners’ conveyer, as lift operators have to shovel snow off the belt, and high winds can affect the overall operation of the conveyer. With the tunnel in place there will be a more consistent operation of the entire learners’ area. The resort is building a 3.2km trail, called A Real Journey, which will be the longest beginner run in the country. The trail will take riders out through Captain’s Basin from the top of McDougall’s Quad, and back around to the bottom of Whitestar Express. From the top of Whitestar, guests can choose to
