Supreme award for Janina DANIELLE BUTLER newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz entral Otago’s Sports Awards celebrated the success of the region’s sporting stars, with notable wins from Wanaka freeskier Janina Kuzma, who was given the Supreme Award for the second year in a row as well as fighting off tough competition to win Senior Sportswoman of the Year. The awards, held in Cromwell on Friday April 8, were based on the 2015 sporting year, which saw Janina, pictured, achieve some of the best results of her career to date. "I am incredibly honoured to receive this award and be named the Central Otago Senior Sportswoman of the Year, and the overall Supreme Winner, for the second time running, especially with so many amazing athletes up for nomination,” she said. Wanaka para-snowboarder Carl Murphy took the senior sportsman title after a top season which saw him win a World Cup gold in the new paralympic discipline of banked slalom in Canada. The junior sportsman and junior sportswoman titles were won by last year’s junior winner, Wanaka freeskier Beau-James Wells and Hawea Flat karate star Holly Wigg respectively. Cromwell squash stalwart Don McDonald was awarded the John Fitzharris Memorial trophy for services to sport.

Home cooking lends a helping hand DANIELLE BUTLER newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz ocal initiative Food for Love has been launched in Wanaka and Hawea, with the intention of providing a homecooked meal to families or individuals who need a little help. Founder Louise Carney said that the idea was based on the fact that sometimes people want to help others in need, whether it be through bereavement, sickness or divorce to name just a few, but don’t know how. “Kiwis don’t often like to ask for help themselves, or for someone they know, so that is why the service can be confidential and totally anonymous. I really wanted it to be a safe place where people can ask for help for a friend,” she said.

“The idea has been in the back of my mind for a while and after hearing a few stories in the community lately and seeing people trying to do it all on their own, I thought there must be something I can do myself to help. Help doesn’t have to come in some huge way, just a little thing can make the difference,” Louise added. Once a request has been made, typically on the group’s Facebook page, volunteers will make sure they know all information regarding allergies and intolerances, then cook a simple, wholesome meal that can be frozen and aim to have it delivered to the recipient’s address within 48 hours. Although the group only officially launched on April 10, it is rapidly gaining popularity, with nominations already pouring in and offers of help from various volunteers. “Although I was blown away by the response,

I was not surprised by how many people offered to help. It is a reflection of Wanaka, which is a place built on volunteers, compassion and kindness. We have had so many offers to help cook and messages from kind-hearted people asking for a meal to be sent to someone they care about. The Wanaka community really is inspirational and we are so fortunate to live here,” Louise said. Around six families have been nominated so far, with the first meals and baked goods delivered to people’s front doors on Tuesday. Louise said there is no minimum requirement to be deserving of a helping hand. “If you believe they are important enough then they are important to us too. The reason we are here is to help and we don’t want people to be shy about nominating someone,” she said. Continued on page 3

Young buskers for festival
Pool’s public open day proposed
DANIELLE BUTLER newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz
The design of Wanaka’s community pool, to be housed within the Three Parks sports facility, is entering detailed stages, and a public open day has been proposed so that people can come down and see its progress. Councillor Lyal Cocks said that
Young musicians will be given the chance to show off their skills in a busking competition, held for the first time at this year’s Arrowtown Autumn Festival. Twelve-year-old Mount Aspiring College student Evie Simonsohn, pictured, has entered the junior category and will be playing the guitar, which she has played for almost three years. “I started with the piano and ukelele, then started messing around with my dad’s guitar and that’s what first got me into it. I love to play classical music but also pop music too, one of my favourites to perform is House Of The Rising Sun,” Evie said. Evie, who enjoys performing live, has been practising every day for around an hour and a half in preparation for the festival. Buskers will be able to pass the hat round for public donations as they perform and the audience can also vote for the People’s Choice Award each day. The top three performers in each category, open and junior, will win a cash prize and be invited to play again during the Pie, Pint and Pinot event in Arrowtown on Sunday April 24. So far, entrants from Wanaka have surpassed
the short public session could be held at the end of April or the first week of May, in light of the project’s progression. He also added that a workshop would be held to decide the name of the pool, and said that fundraising initiatives were still being pursued.
Wanaka will support plastic-free remit Wanaka’s Community Board have backed Plastic Free Wanaka’s suggestion that Queenstown Lakes District Council should support Palmerston North’s remit to introduce a levy on plastic bags. The board expressed its support of the remit, submitted to the government by Palmerston North, with chairwoman Rachel Brown stating that the committee would discuss what they could
do to help. Councillor Calum MacLeod said that he would be happy to speak to the council and push the remit in any way possible. “It is really important that we do our part and look for alternatives to plastic bag use. There are much bigger towns across the world making it work, and we could become Central Otago’s first plastic-free town,” Plastic Free Wanaka’s Anna van Riel said.

DANIELLE BUTLER newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz Wanaka veteran Matty Plant has put a call out for other ex-servicemen and women to join him in reminiscing and remembering fallen friends. Matty, originally of Palmerston North, has lived in Wanaka for 13 years and served for seven and a half years with Linton’s infantry regiment between 1993 and 2000 during his career. Veterans who have come from all over the
world, including America and Belgium, have answered Matty’s plea, with the group planning to meet at Wanaka’s Anzac Day service. “The idea to get everyone together has been in the back of my mind for a while. It is really just the Vietnamese who have been keeping the Returned Services Association (RSA) going and, although it is hard to explain if you’re not in the military, we all have our own reasons why we don’t feel part of it. We are a family until the end of days and we need to stay together,” Matty said.

Cat critical after shooting DANIELLE BUTLER newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz A distraught pet owner whose chocolate Burmese cat Milo was shot in a residential area is no closer to finding out who is responsible. Wanaka Police said that so far they haven’t had any reports or sightings regarding the incident, which took place near Waimana Place, Wanaka, on Sunday, April 10. Milo, who was shot behind his right shoulder with a slug or pellet gun, which clipped his spleen and five parts of his intestine, was fitted with a catheter and given antibiotics for pain relief and taken into surgery
due to his rising temperature on Tuesday, April 12. Owner Jill Herbert thanked Carol and the team at Aspiring Vets for their wonderful care. Jill said that Milo had woken around half an hour after surgery and that although Carol and the team had managed to fix so much damage, the next few hours would be important. “No matter what your thoughts are on cats, this act is an offence, no one should be shooting firearms near dwelling houses, there is an obvious risk to not only pets but also people and property,” Constable Deane Harbison said.
Future options for Wanaka schools GLENDA TURNBULL journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz With school numbers in Wanaka growing, Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean said the Ministry of Education was currently exploring future options for the provision of schooling in the Wanaka area. “The Ministry has identified strong roll growth and there is a need to be prepared to meet the demand. The community are interested in having another school built. The next step now is for the Ministry to use the information from the local community,” Jacqui said. “The 2013 census showed 5037 people lived in Wanaka, an increase of 1707 people, or 51.3 percent, since the 2001 Census.”
Last year extensive consultation and workshops with the Wanaka and Hawea community were held in a move to ensure the community’s views are heard, with 326 people attending workshops, and 837 completing online surveys. From that consultation, 81 percent of survey respondents expressed a preference for at least one new primary education provider. “I think this is a good process for the Ministry to undertake. The Ministry is well in front of the issue, they have spoken to the community and they are listening to them. The Ministry’s first priority will be to ensure there is enough capacity for primary provision in the area,” Jacqui said.
Council to clamp down on Wicked GLENDA TURNBULL journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) will be enforcing the signage rules in the District Plan and will issue fines to drivers of vehicles that are signwritten with lewd, sexually explicit or offensive messages. The council had advised Wicked Campers several weeks ago that it was proposing to take this action, following complaints from the public. QLDC chief executive Mike Theelen said the council had invited
the company to provide a list of its slogans so QLDC could advise them of those that would breach the signage rules. Wicked Campers has so far chosen not to take up this offer. “QLDC is not actively seeking out Wicked Campers for enforcement but if parking officers noticed vehicles with offensive signage parked in public places during their daily patrols, or if members of the public complained and provided evidence, the council was prepared to issue $300 fines,” Mike said.
What poetry does for us GLENDA TURNBULL journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz Louise Wallace has been writing for more than 14 years and will be joined by Kate Camp and Greg O’Brien at Aspiring Conversations to explore what poetry does for us in their session “A still small voice”. This will be the first collaboration between the three poets although Louise has been previously tutored by Kate. “One of my very first poetry workshops I did at Gisborne Polytechnic was a weekend workshop where Kate was the tutor. I’m really looking forward to working with both Kate and Greg in this session,” Louise said. The poets will be discussing what poetry does in today’s whirling world - what it means to them and readers. Louise, pictured, was last year’s Burns Fellow and during her residency she worked on a new manuscript for her upcoming new book. She has also founded an online journal for young writers at starlingmag.com, the first issue of which was published in January. The journal features 16 writers, with three of them being high school students. “The journal is the first of its kind in New Zealand. We received over 100 submissions for our first issue. It was just amazing. Our aim is to reach writers in regional areas. Because it is online it is accessible to classrooms all around the country,” she said. Louise started the journal because she found through her own experience there were not many opportunities to have work published. “As a young writer you are really hungry for opportunities and you compete against other older writers for publication space. I had no idea how many submissions we would receive so that was fantastic and we are already receiving submissions for the next issue which comes out around mid-July,” Louise said.

Louise lives in Wellington and works with the Wellington City Mission as foodbank and volunteer coordinator. During her Burns residency she had the opportunity to explore Otago and Wanaka and is looking forward to returning to Wanaka for Aspiring Conversations. The Wanaka Sun has two double passes to give away to “A still small voice” at Aspiring Conversations on Sunday, April 24. To go into the draw, find this post on the Wanaka Sun Facebook page, like it and tag the friend you would like to take or email editor@thewanakasun.co.nz and tell us who you would like to bring.
Home cooking lends a helping hand Continued from page 1 After the initial busy period which has come with the launch of the group, Louise plans to introduce some structure in the form of rosters to ensure everything runs smoothly as awareness and popularity of Food for Love rises. She also hopes that it will become a permanent fixture in Wanaka, and would like to eventually branch out to other areas in Otago, including Alexandra and Cromwell.
“I want this to be one of the first things people think of when they hear of people struggling or going through a hard time,” Louise said. Anyone who wishes to find out more about Food for Love, make a nomination or offer to help, can visit the Facebook page ‘Food for Love’. Louise is also welcoming donations at House of Travel, Helwick Street, if anyone has any extra cooking or baking that they wish to drop off.

Defibrillators - know where they are GLENDA TURNBULL journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz Each year nearly 2000 New Zealanders will suffer a cardiac arrest outside of hospital. For 64 percent of cardiac arrests a bystander will perform CPR. The chance of survival increases by up to 40 percent when an automated external defibrillator (AED) is used within three to five minutes of the person collapsing. A list of the locations of these life-saving machines in Wanaka and the surrounding areas can be found at aedlocations.co.nz. It is a community-orientated volunteer project designed to make people aware of how many AEDs there are in New Zealand. The site aims to increase awareness by helping individuals locate the defibrillators in their local area, and by providing signage for
display at these sites. As part of the Central Lakes Trust programme to support defibrillators being installed in high foot-traffic areas that are accessible to the general public, Mount Aspiring College recently received $2063 to help purchase a new defibrillator. “Recent first aid courses held at the school have highlighted the improved results in comparison to CPR. While our students themselves are at low risk of cardiac arrest, our staff and many community users at the college are not. Students, staff and the many outside of school hours community users will all benefit from the installation of a defibrillator at the college,” principal Wayne Bosley said. The donation brings the number of defibrillators supported by Central Lakes Trust since 2013 to 17.
Central Otago satisfication survey GLENDA TURNBULL journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz A continuation of a survey started last year will be carried out by the Otago Mayoral Forum in the next two months. A random selection of 1700 Central Otago residents will be contacted by phone by research company Versus. The findings will help create a benchmark for participating Otago councils to compare results. The survey will provide useful information for the Central Otago District Council to understand satisfaction with
community facilities, communications and services. CODC Chief Executive Leanne Mash says the Otago-wide survey will provide insights into how councils can best invest their resources to improve service levels and resident satisfaction. “This information will help us gauge how well our community feels we are delivering services compared to our Otago neighbours and highlight opportunities for us to learn from each other.” The results will be shared with participating councils.

Lost pom on South Island trek for juvenile parkinson’s GLENDA TURNBULL journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz Kelly Purdie is in Wanaka this week taking a break from her 4500km journey around the South Island to increase awareness of the rare condition juvenile Parkinson’s disease. Kelly is originally from England and has lived in New Zealand for the past eight years. Her sister Tracey has had juvenile Parkinson’s disease since aged 15, but was not diagnosed correctly until 25. Juvenile Parkinson’s is usually diagnosed in people younger than 21. “Not a lot of people have it and it is very rare. Tracey wants to have an operation to alleviate the symptoms, so I wanted to raise awareness and educate people,” Kelly said. Kelly started in Dunedin on January 18 and so far has travelled 1099km. On Thursday she continues up the West Coast. The start of her journey was not all she had hoped. “I got really bad blisters walking from Dunedin to Middlemarch, so I was forced to go by bike along the Rail Trail, as it was just too painful to walk,” she said. Since then she has had less trouble with her feet, swearing by a product called Wool-it. “I’ve had no more blisters, which has been great.” This is Kelly’s first attempt at anything

Installation highlights NZ authors GLENDA TURNBULL journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz A portrait photography installation by New Zealand photographer Maja Moritz is currently being exhibited at the Wanaka Library. Wanaka Library event coordinator Eve Marshall-Lea said the exhibition “43 NZ Authors” will be at the library until the end of May. “Maja Moritz has been touring the exhibition around New Zealand for the last couple of years and she approached us last year to see if we would like to have the exhibition in Wanaka. It has been so exciting having it here. Maja brought it all down and we invested in some special display boxes so they are set up at the end of library stacks,” Eve said.
Each portrait comes with an A4 description of the author and their works. Part of the display is pictured. There is a list for people to take away that describes the author’s works at the time of the photograph being taken and there is a comments book available. The German press agency, DPA Picture Alliance asked Maja to portray NZ authors who were present at the 2012 Frankfurt Book Fair in Germany as New Zealand was the guest of honour that year. “There was no particular selection, I just tried to meet with as many of the authors who were appointed to go as possible,” Maja said. The exhibition is free and the photographs are displayed throughout the library. Maja will be coming to Wanaka on May 28 for a meet and greet.
Children raise money for St John DANIELLE BUTLER newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz Children at Wanaka Preschool got involved in St John Ambulance annual appeal last week, raising $72.80 for the charity. The preschool’s green day hosted a range of fun and informative activities, with ambulance officer Robyn talking to the older children about calling 111 and how St John can help people. Children dressed in green and spent the day playing with green playdough and having a look around a St John ambulance.
The Informant In the previous article I covered off the tax and GST treatment of motor vehicles for people who operate as partnerships or sole traders. This article covers off how motor vehicles are treated for those who operate under a company. Given companies are a common entity type used by a lot of people in business this article will be relevant to a number of you operating through a company structure. The type of business activity you operate is irrelevant to how the vehicle is treated so these rules equally apply to retailers, trades people or service people. If a company owns a vehicle and it is also GST registered there is an automatic right to claim 100% of the GST and 100% of the running costs and loss on the value of the vehicle over time (i.e. depreciation). This is assuming the company is undertaking some form of business activity. If there is no business then there is no ability to make claims for either GST or income tax. So far this is relatively simple. The Company owns the vehicle and claims 100% of everything related to that vehicle. It isn’t quite as easy as that however as complications arise when a shareholder or employee uses a vehicle or has it available for personal use.
THE WANAKA SUN
“The children were excited to see the ambulance and have the opportunity to have a look inside, see the lights flashing and hear the siren,” senior teacher Annie Davies said. This green day was just one of many St John fundraising activities to take place across the country between April 4 and 10. “Demand for our services has never been greater and as a charity we rely on the generosity of the communities we serve. We never take their trust and support for granted,” St John chief executive Peter Bradley said.
The main point to identify with here is that mere availability for personal use by a shareholder or employee can trigger what is known as a fringe benefit (i.e. the company is giving its vehicle to someone outside of the company to use personally). The good thing is the ability to negate any benefit with restriction of personal use and a follow up program of ensuring this restriction is adhered to. The IRD expect to see a letter from the company advising the employee that the vehicle is not to be used personally. There are circumstances where no benefit will arise if an employee has to take a vehicle to their residence overnight as part of their employment duties and there is no ability for the vehicle to be stored on-site at the business premises. Work related vehicles have a slightly wider exemption. Fortunately utilities (including double cabs) are regarded as work related vehicles and can be exempt from FBT if they are permanently sign written and any personal travel is incidental. There tends to be a common misconception that if you sign write any vehicle then it will be treated as exempt from FBT. This is not the case for normal passenger cars and only applies to work related vehicles which is I guess why utilities are so popular as well as being handy for trades people.
Hawea locals Craig Wing and Lisinda Rickman saw a need for A2 raw milk and will be supplying the raw milk from the start of May. The couple moved to Hawea four years ago, bought the farm on Kane Road and converted it to dairy. The new regulations brought in by the Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI), covering the sale of raw milk, have been welcomed by Craig and he said that he would not have considered starting up the venture without the new guidelines. “We’ve had a fair bit of demand for raw milk. The MPI regulations stipulate that people have to be registered when they buy it. The dispensing machine will have pre-loaded cards. The details of the customer will be loaded onto the card, so every time they buy milk from us we will know who bought it,” Craig said. If buying by cash there will be a register for the customer to fill in. “The register is part of our risk management plan we have with the MPI. It is so we have a record of who is buying the milk, so if there is ever a problem we
can contact them,” Craig said. The raw milk will be available from their farm gate via a dispensing machine. The couple have 28 A2 cows who produce the raw milk and who are milked separately and Lisinda said that just like any raw product there are risks with the raw milk. “I have had a lot of people in Hawea asking for raw milk. There are strict hygiene standards we have to adhere to. We would not be doing it if we did not think it was a safe product. The cows are pretty special and usually get a back rub when we are milking them,” Lisinda said. Raw milk producers are required to be compliant by November 1, but Craig said they already had guidelines and testing standards in place. Craig saw a demand for the product and wanted to give people a choice while also giving his children a healthy drink option. The A2 milk is known to be better for digestion. Prior to living here the couple managed a property in Canterbury. “We were looking for a lifestyle change, where our children can ski in the winter,” Lisinda said.
Te Whare Pora convention GLENDA TURNBULL journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz More than 150 people attended the inaugural Te Whare Pora convention on gender equality in Wanaka last weekend, exceeding organisers’ expectations. Organiser Amy Pearl said she was very happy with how the convention was received. “Many people now have a greater understanding of what gender equality is, why we don’t yet have it and why it is important to achieve gender equality,” Amy said. The speakers over the weekend covered various topics including women in politics, abortion, women’s health, women in parliament, the history of women in New Zealand and women in science. On Saturday, University of Otago history professor Barbara Brookes spoke about the history of New Zealand
women, discussing how the roles of women had changed in society over the last 100 years and how little the roles of men had changed over the same time period. “We can celebrate the changes in women’s rights from the right to vote, the first woman in parliament in 1933 and celebrate the diversity in the rights of women in 2016,” Barbara said. Amy said that many women had communicated how the event has changed their perspective. “The presentations changed perspectives here. There are young women who left Te Whare Pora with a new perspective on their future and will be able to better navigate through their lives. Gender equality is the precondition to peace, development, the eradication of poverty and protecting our environment. Gender equality is a keystone issue,” Amy said.
Any vehicle used in an emergency call out also qualifies for a daily exemption from liability for FBT. If there is no restriction on employee or shareholder availability a company will need to account to the IRD for Fringe Benefit Tax (FBT). Unlike sole traders or partnerships there is no means of splitting the vehicle costs between business and personal via the use of log books. In my mind this is a positive as no client I have ever met likes keeping a log book. You do need to keep track of days where a vehicle may not be available for personal use however. There is the ability to deal with the issue of paying FBT to the IRD through the shareholder making a yearly contribution to the company. The value that is deemed to negate the need to pay FBT is based on either a 20% or 36% of the cost of the vehicle value depending on how long it has been held by the company. The shareholder contribution reduces the requirement to pay FBT, allows the company to claim 100% of all of the running costs and GST on all expenses all without keeping a log book. Most people find this an attractive proposition and a relatively simple one. This is a solution I favour in general.

Fundraiser for summer voyage PHOTO: ALEX KERR
DANIELLE BUTLER newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz Students due to set sail on the Spirit of New Zealand ship in November have already been busy fundraising for the trip. Year ten pupils Riley Arneson, Georgia Budd, Mitchell Evans, Annabel Fairbairn, Ethan Kerr, Fiona Murray, Jesse Robertson, Zhane Skipper, Jaime Toepfer and Jamie Toomey have been taking part in traffic surveys and working hard to collect and sell pine cones and kindling, which has so far earned them $2300 of the $14000 needed in total. The five boys and five girls from Mount Aspiring College will take part in the maritime character development programme alongside students from four other schools, where they will face challenges and learn how to sail the three-mast ship. Sports coordinator Jacky Toepfer said that the programme, run by The Spirit of Adventure Trust, would give the students a chance to make new friends, build their confidence and gain a sense of achievement. The group also plans to apply for some grants to help them fund their trip. Pictured: The students sell pine cones to raise money.
The new chairperson of the Alpine Community Development Trust, Margaret West is focused on the need to be responsive to changes in the community. She was previously the deputy chairperson and has lived in Wanaka for four years. Her background is in tertiary education funding with the Tertiary Education Commission in Wellington and in Dunedin at Otago Polytechnic as an education manager. Margaret, pictured, said over the past year Community Networks has shifted its focus from the provision of social work, when they had two social workers, to the facilitation of social and community services. “We work closely with local providers such as Presbyterian Support Family Works social workers to meet social work requirements, rather than providing those services ourselves,” Margaret said. They will continue to run the foodbank and through their Heartland contract host services such as JPs, Work and Income, and Community Law on site. They also coordinate drivers for Meals on Wheels and Wheels to Dunstan and various organisations use their suite of offices. “The recently agreed mission for the Trust is ‘to provide a resource hub for social wellbeing services and community development’ which is a great encompassing statement and certainly encourages us to look very broadly across everything that is happening in the community and where the gaps might be,” Margaret said. The Trust has recently gained a three-year funding stream to undertake the Community Development Scheme. “The knowledge processes and outcomes generated from this work will contribute hugely to the future

directions of the Trust. It is a complex and dynamic project and I am excited by the potential of what it will bring to the future evolution of our growing community,” Margaret said. “Along with our new mission statement the agreed vision for the Alpine Community Development Trust is ‘Upper Clutha people are able to thrive – not just survive’. I think that says a lot about what we can do to contribute to the betterment of the community overall.”
Qldc annual plan consultation What do you think?
We’re proposing some variations to the programme of major works and activities agreed with the community in last year’s 10-Year Plan. Some of them are highlighted here. Please tell us whether you agree and, if not, what you think we should do instead.
A copy of our Annual Plan Guide will be delivered to ratepayers this week, or read it at www.qldc.govt.nz, then use the easy online form to have your say. It’s also your chance to ask the Council to support other projects that you think are important but aren’t currently in our plan for 2016-17.

wanaka pool opening sooner The new Wanaka pool at Three Parks will be opening sooner than was provided for in the 10 Year Plan. This decision was made after the 10YP was adopted last year. The capital cost is budgeted at $12.3 million with the operational deficit for 2016-17 to be funded from a targeted rate of $101 per residential property in the Wanaka Ward. This will rise to at least the $184 per year that was signalled in the 10YP for 2017-18.10YP for 2017-18.
This would involve reducing the rates for residential flats; and increasing rates on land that is zoned for development but still being used for farming, to discourage landbanking.

UPPER CLUTHA JUNIOR RUGBY CLUB The Upper Clutha Junior Rugby Club is proud to be sending 22 local boys to Sydney for a week, starting April 23 to represent the Club and the region against three Sydney-based clubs and schools. The boys will play a total of six rugby games over the week with the principal match being an ANZAC Day trans-Tasman tussle against the Mosman Rugby Club after a dawn service.
The team will be based at the Narrabeen Beach Holiday Park in the northern beach area of Sydney. Sending these teams of 11 and 12-year-olds on tour is only possible because of all the hard work put in by the boys, their parents and the organising committee members who have fundraised for almost 12 months.

VIEWPOINT Enjoy the aroma Since I know I’m not the only dog owner to be really, really, really p’ed off this week because of a cyclist or runner – yes, I’m looking at you keep-fit types. It’s not even about sharing the road, and it’s not the first time either, that’s why I’m writing to the paper. As a dog owner, who likes to take my dog out on our gorgeous tracks, I bring something to bag the poo and I bag the poo and bring it home. To you, the accused, as a keep-fit type who likes to take yourself out running or cycling on our gorgeous track, I suggest you do the same because I know just how loud you’d be moaning
should your high-speed tyres and fancy go-faststriped footwear get smeared with canine faeces. Because it was your faeces that was smeared all over my canine. No, you didn’t take the time to dig a hole, or bag it up or hold it in, you just left it out in the open. Thanks for that. Next time my dog rolls in something unsavoury – and I sincerely hope there is not a next time – I will find the nearest bunch of keep-fit types enjoying a coffee and I will tie said faeces smeared canine to the leg of their table just so they can enjoy the aroma I did all the way home. SELF-EMPLOYED AND NEED FINANCE HELP? Getting a home loan can be challenging especially when you’re self-employed. The Wanaka and Queenstown market is full of small business owners who are working hard to grow into more substantial operations. The issue many find is that once their business starts to take off that’s when they need more funds to grow or even buy a house. This can create a disconnect, as typically banks will only consider a business’ past trading history when determining its ability to repay a new loan. Borrowing money then becomes difficult, not to mention frustrating, as even though cash flow may be strong, lenders may not be interested if there is insufficient proof to back this up. As a result many business owners have to delay buying or building a home or expanding their business until the new financial year. Businesses that have been trading for less than two years are often in a similar boat.

The off-road sporting event, held for the first time last April, includes the Wanaka Sun Marathon, a 10km and a 5km loop course over wellgroomed trails alongside the Clutha. ActiveQT’s managing director Adrian Bailey said that preparations were coming along nicely.
“The event is still reasonably new and we’re happy that we have a couple of hundred participating across the events,” he said. Runners on the Wanaka Sun Marathon course will experience approximately 276m of ascent and descent across the trail, while all trails, which start at the Albert Town Tavern at 8am, showcase the colours and light of autumnal Wanaka. USASA Nationals win for Zoi
Wanaka Rowing Club, racing as Mount Aspiring College in the Maadi Cup, has achieved its best overall result for the club to date. Fifteen crews competed, with two crews qualifying for A finals (within the top eight crews in New Zealand) which resulted in a bronze medal for Riley Bruce and Lucas Toovey in the boys under-18 double sculls. Six crews qualified for the B finals (within the top 16 crews in New Zealand) and four crews qualified for the C finals. Riley Bruce, in his final year of rowing with MAC, has continued his good form. He was placed second in the semi-finals of the boys under-18 single and, against tough competition in the final, raced into a creditable fifth place. Riley teamed up with Lucas Toovey in the boys under-18 double sculls to win a bronze medal with a convincing row in a personal best time of 6.49.96. Lucas had just missed out on a place in the A final by 0.03 seconds of the boys under-17 single sculls but qualified in the fastest time for the B final. He sat with the pack in fifth place until 300m to go before breaking away to win by over a length in a time of 8.07. Senior girls Riley Homan and Bridie Hurley had a fantastic row in the B final and were placed second. They had led the race from the start but, with 50m to go were overtaken by Hamilton Girls. Both girls raced in the under-18 singles. Bridie was placed second in the C final

and Riley was placed fourth in the B final. Novice girls Laura Neale, Peta Mckay, Emma Smith, Maggie Stiven and Kilita Fouchee raced for the first time this year. Although they have only been rowing since September, they achieved spots in the C and B finals. Sam Pearce rowed a personal best in his heat to place fifth in his repechage of the boys under-16 singles and narrowly missed out on the final. Sam then teamed up with Finn Hunter and they were placed fifth in the boys under-17 double sculls B final. Finn also raced in the boys under-18 singles and he teamed up with Riley Bruce to qualify for the B final of the boys under-18 coxless pair to place third.
Choosing the right builder is critical
With so many builders vying for your business, it’s sometimes difficult to decide who to trust with a project so dear to your heart as building a new home. Experts suggest the best course of action is to take a thorough look at the builder’s track record, view examples of their work and most important, talk to some of their customers. It’s a process many of our customers went through before deciding to build with us. At G.J. Gardner Homes we are happy to be compared. Visit our website gjgardner.co.nz for a copy of our Comparing Apples with Apples Builder Checklist so you can make an informed evaluation. When you build with G.J. Gardner Homes you get a fixed price contract, an agreed completion date and no surprises. That’s why more New Zealanders trust G.J. Gardner to build their homes than any other builder.

Vulcan a first in Southern Hemisphere
PHOTO: SIMON DARBY
GLENDA TURNBULL Wanaka Sun Highlands Motorsport Park took delivery of an Aston Martin Vulcan last weekend, and unveiled the supercar to the public with a spectacular maiden voyage. The only supercar of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, and one of only 24 Vulcans produced worldwide, the luxury track-only vehicle is the highest value production car to be sold in New Zealand, at $4.2 million. Highlands Motorsport Park owner, Tony Quinn, said taking delivery of Vulcan was a special moment. “As Highlands celebrates its third birthday this month, we are thrilled to welcome the Highlands Vulcan to the family. I have an immense amount of respect for the heritage of motorsport in New Zealand and the legacy
it has around the world, and I think that it is a fitting tribute that New Zealand will be home to an Aston Martin Vulcan.” Aston Martin regional director for Asia Pacific, Patrik Nilsson said: “We are elated to see this stunning example of engineering prowess arrive at Highlands Motorsport Park, the first delivery of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere.” The Cromwell community witnessed the Vulcan taking to the track on Saturday morning. Highlands offered ten hot-lap experiences in the Aston Martin Vulcan, two rides were donated to the Halberg Trust and a local fundraiser for a family who lost their father in a tragic helicopter accident, along with $1000 from each ticket donated to Cure Kids and Relay for Life. The Aston Martin Vulcan will be on display at the Highlands National Motorsport Museum until September 2016.
A yearly tradition is returning again at this year’s Contact Epic mountain bike race this Saturday April 16 with scones, jam and cream on offer for weary bike riders at Dingleburn Station. Hawea Wanaka Pony Club head coach Tui Willson said she would be staying in the shearer’s quarters at Dingleburn Station on Friday night. “I’ll get up super early on Saturday morning and bake flat out. The scones and tea are legendary for the Epic bike race. All we ask from the riders is a donation. The hard core riders don’t stop, but others take
a bit of time out to enjoy a hot cup of tea and scone before heading off again,” Tui said. The pony club has around 30 members with most members aged under 15 years. “We have quite a few new young riders. A lot of our senior riders we lose to boarding school or university. We have a really good range of juniors so we will be able to start having team events again,” Tui said. Money raised from the scones will be used to pay for lessons for the pony club members from a NZ National Pony Instructor. There are 560 mountain bikers entered in the Epic this year, with 356 in the Epic, 204 in the Classic and 74 in the Traverse.
Slopestyle, halfpipe wins STAFF REPORTER sports@thewanakasun.co.nz Finn Bilous has won the men’s open freeski slopestyle and halfpipe events at the USASA National Championships. In both competitions his winning run was the his last run. Finn took the lead in slopestyle after the first run with a score of 87.2. He stepped it up for the next run to retain his
lead and in the process also won the prize for best trick with a switch seven bonk on the second rail feature followed by back-to-back double cork tens. In the halfpipe event, Finn’s last run, which included all four direction rotations (starting the trick backwards, forwards and spinning left and right), and finished with his signature ally-oop 720 variation, put him on top of the podium.
