Wanaka cemetery RSA site plan VIV MILSOM journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz n preparation for ANZAC Day (Monday, April 25), the Wanaka Returned Servicemen’s Association (RSA) is developing a plan of the grave sites of all ex-servicemen buried at the Wanaka cemetery. It has been a long-standing tradition for local RSA members to lay poppies on the graves of all known ex-servicemen at the Wanaka cemetery on ANZAC Day, after the official public services at the Lake Wanaka Centre and cenotaph. There are 25 graves in the RSA Memorial area of the cemetery, and local resident Bruce Hebbard has now identified a further 48 graves of exservicemen in the cemetery. He said his interest in working on the cemetery plan was spurred by his own family connections. “My grandfather who is buried in the public part of the cemetery served as a blacksmith in France and Belgium in World War I, while my father whose ashes are interred in the RSA Memorial area, served in the air force in World War II.” “We have a problem though, in that not all ex-servicemen are identified as such on their headstones and their war history may not be recorded in QLDC records either,” he said. “So we are asking Wanaka residents to get in touch with us, if they think they can help us identify these further grave sites.” Bruce Hebbard can be contacted on 443 1915.

High demand for real estate DANIELLE BUTLER newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz national overview of the country’s housing market has revealed that the total number of residential houses available to buy are at their lowest levels in two years, with Wanaka being no exception. Licensed agent and partner at Ray White, Anna Findlay, said that a lot of people have been taking advantage of the current buoyant market place by putting properties on the market, which in turn have been selling a lot faster due to the high demand. “It is interesting as there is a feeling around town that stock levels are low, but they are actually better than people think. The market is doing quite well right now. The biggest difference is that properties are disappearing faster because

of how buoyant the market is at the moment,” Anna said.

There seems to be buyers for everything at the moment. Anna said that although this applies across all properties, lower priced housing tends to be in especially short supply. Mat Andrews, director at Bayleys, added that the real estate market has a lot of confidence at the moment, and they too were seeing that properties were surpassing vendor’s expectations and not staying on the market for very long. “There seems to be buyers for everything at

the moment, and this could be down to a combination of many things. The economy is ticking along nicely as well as the low interest rates, and the fact that property is seen as a safe place to invest money. It is certainly seen as a solid investment over time, particularly in a town like Wanaka,” Mat said. In addition to this, research has shown that the average price paid nationally for a house has reached a record high of $588,311, although Mat and Anna said that the popularity of properties appears to be across the board, ranging from low to high priced existing properties, as well as unnamed plots. The popularity of lower priced marketing strategies such as auctions has also proven a contributing factor in the quicker and easier ways that people are now able to sell their property in the current market place.

Have your say on the district’s parks STAFF REPORTER editor@thewanakasun.co.nz Queenstown Lakes District Council is seeking feedback on the district’s parks including how you currently use parks, what you value about them and what could be improved. The Parks Strategy, last reviewed in 2002, stated the “vision for the district is to provide an abundance of quality parks for recreation, sport and amenity interlinked by green corridors providing safe walking and cycling routes while also providing wildlife refuge. The urban communities will have easy access to river, lake and mountain fringes as well as good access to developed parks and reserves.” A formal consultation phase will take place later this year. Feedback closes on May 20. PHOTO: NIKKI HEATH

Accommodation shortage VIV MILSOM journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz Many short term and seasonal workers in Wanaka are struggling to find rental accommodation and Waitaki MP, Jacqui Dean, is concerned that this lack of worker accommodation could affect future growth in Wanaka. “I’m very concerned at the shortage, with an estimated 800 extra people wanting to live in the town over the winter,” she said. Angela Cross, head property manager at Wanaka Accommodation Centre, predicts a huge shortage this winter of rental accommodation for seasonal workers and believes there has been a knock-on effect because longer term local tenants are taking up all the available accommodation. She said that last year she had six or seven properties waiting for winter tenants, but this year has none. Rebecca Lewis, people and property manager for Cardrona Alpine Resort, said Cardrona employs a total of 550 staff for the winter, with around 150 already living in the area. “We are concerned and doing more than in the past to help employees,” she said. “We will

be stretched, but Oueenstown is way worse and we need to start looking at future options to prevent getting as bad as Queenstown.” “We are considering the option of providing seasonal worker accommodation which would benefit the community, but we can't resolve this option overnight.” Jacqui Dean said she would like to see the Queenstown Lakes District Council step up in Wanaka, by making it more attractive for the developers of rental or worker accommodation to look at the area. “QLDC has an option via its funding policy to encourage developers and current landowners.” “Also the council's current regulations around short term living accommodation may act as a deterrent to those home owners considering providing worker accommodation,” she said. “With tourism growing in the country and Wanaka riding the crest of that wave of success, it's crucial that the town has the facilities to house the seasonal staff required to support on-going tourism growth for the benefit of the whole community.”

Fluoridated water proposed VIV MILSOM journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz Wanaka water is not currently fluoridated, and QLDC has never considered fluoridation, but with the recent government plan to move responsibility for water fluoridation from local councils to district health boards, this could change in the future. “Moving the decision-making process from local councils to DHBS is recognition that water fluoridation is a health-related issue,” Associate Health Minister, Peter Dunne, said. A Bill is expected to be introduced to Parliament later this year and members of the public and organisations will have an opportunity to make submissions to the Health Select Committee as it considers the Bill. The Public Health Association (PHA) has said that fluoridation

is a valuable and proven preventative measure, and has welcomed the Government's decision to empower district health boards with responsibility for decisions about community water fluoridation. The NZ Dental Association also supports fluoridation for all New Zealanders and said that decay rates among young children and adults are approximately 20-30 percent lower in communities with water fluoridation. In Wanaka though, not all local dentists agree with their national association. Steve Brett said while he sees benefits in fluoride, he is opposed in Wanaka to what he calls “mass medication” and said that decay is not a big issue here. However, another local dentist, Helen Cornwall, said she would support any initiative that would make fluoride available to the whole community.

Luggate reserve land gift DANIELLE BUTLER newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz The vesting of reserve land at Luggate Park has been accepted by Wanaka Community Board, with full support from Luggate Community Association. The proposal, which was made to the board as part of the subdivision of Stage 2B of Luggate Park, has been made in lieu of reserve land contributions and will mean that new tracks can be implemented on the land for the community to use and enjoy. Chairman of the Luggate Community Association Graeme Perkins said that it would make for a lovely piece

of land and the community were very much behind receiving this popular recreational space. Parks and reserves planning manager Stephen Quin responded to the board’s concerns regarding the potential cost of maintenance by saying that the benefits of the community inheriting such a nice natural place justified any potential expense. “Weed control will be there from time to time which will incur a cost but I am confident that it will remain very beneficial for the community. We are putting conditions in the developer’s agreement to ensure that the land is in as good a condition as we can expect,” he said.

Pool benefits from charity concert DANIELLE BUTLER newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz Wanaka’s Rotary Club has presented a cheque for $10,000 to Councillor Lyal Cocks, which will go towards the development of the new pool to be housed at the town’s new sports facility. The money was raised from ticket sales at the club’s charity opera concert in February, as well as sponsorship of the event and the charitable acts of opera singer David McAtamney and pianist Judy Faris, who donated their time and performances. “We were thrilled. The concert was packed, and we never expected to raise so much money. We wouldn’t have been able to do it if David and Judy had taken their fee, but it was all voluntary. It was absolutely fantastic,” organiser Edna McAtamney said. “The Wanaka Rotary Club are a class act and

they are so good at what they do when it comes to this sort of thing,” she added. The club were able to choose how they spent the money, and they decided it should go towards the building of the pool, particularly the spa pool. During the cheque presentation, Rotary Club members were taken around the construction site of the new sports facility and adjacent site of the new pool, where earthworks are due to start shortly. Councillor Lyal Cocks said that the money would primarily be used to install a lift, which could hold 15 people, allowing easy access into the spa pool for people with limited mobility. Proposed Kirimoko track gets green light DANIELLE BUTLER newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz A new recreation reserve and the development of a track at Kirimoko Crescent has been given the go ahead by Wanaka Community Board, who have approved a proposal to offset any improvement contributions in order to develop the track. Concerns that part of the track has a gradient of 1:8 were raised by councillor Ella Lawton, who said that the gradient is higher than what would usually be expected of public tracks. “Small parts of the track’s gradient is too steep.

Announcements that Wanaka’s showgrounds is to be renovated after 2017’s A&P Show have brought disappointment to the rugby community, who will not be able to play on the grounds coming into the start of the rugby season. Wanaka Community Board member Mike O’Connor said that the decision would have a major effect on rugby in the town, from school clubs to premier games. “All rugby during this stage will have to be played elsewhere, and if for any reason there was a delay in the renovation then our members could be sitting looking at a ground that they could have used, and that would be really disappointing,” he said. Mike added that there was a lot more decision-making to take place but that grounds in

NASA postpones launch STAFF REPORTER editor@thewanakasun.co.nz NASA postponed Tuesday’s scheduled launch of its super pressure balloon from Wanaka Airport at 7:30am due to unacceptable weather for the launch operations. The Wanaka-based NASA team had brought the payload out to the flight line, laid out the balloon’s protective ground cloth and took the balloon out to the flight line,

before the launch was put on hold. “We were close today,” NASA’s Balloon Program Office chief Debbie Fairbrother said on Tuesday. “It is unfortunate but not unusual. We’ll be ready when Mother Nature is.” Opposing winds at the surface and lower-levels (at 250m) causing a shearing effect mean there will be no launch attempt today (Thursday), while tomorrow’s weather also shows unacceptable wind conditions.

It is disappointing that we’re going to end up with a track that is not ideal for its situation,” Ella said. Parks and Reserves planning manager Stephen Quin said that the consent plan had been drawn up before new track standards had come into place, preventing current standards from being considered. The proposal was approved on the basis that on the whole the track will provide a positive resource for the community, although it may not be practical for everybody to use. The amount of offset sought to enable the proposal is $24,644 excluding GST.

Central Otago harvest a Helping kids eat fun and fresh highlight for wine specialists The 2016 grape harvest was the highlight for ten leading New Zealand wine professionals who were hosted in Central Otago as part of the region’s annual Central Crush event. Now in its fifth year, Central Crush is held to coincide with the mid-point in the region’s annual grape harvest and designed to increase the sales of Central Otago wines. The event offers wine specialists, including professional sommeliers, restaurant managers and leading wine retailers selected from around New Zealand, a first-hand preview of the

likely shape and style of each year’s vintage as well as a chance to meet with winemakers to taste wines from earlier vintages. Central Crush’s event manager Vikki Kircher said that instead of laying out the white tablecloths and “taking the region to town” they handpick trade guests and invite them to the region. “Hosting professionals in our own special playground gives them a far better appreciation of the special character of Central Otago wine. ANZAC Day plans finalised STAFF REPORTER editor@thewanakasun.co.nz Wanaka and Lake Hawea’s Returned Services Association (RSA) committees are currently finalising the organisation of ANZAC Day activities on Monday April 25. A dawn service will be held both on the foreshore in Wanaka and at the Hawea Dam ANZAC Peninsula, followed by a traditional civic service at 9.30am in the Lake Wanaka Centre. Major Ian Piercy, 2/4 Battalion RNZIR, will then call the parade to order

and march through town to the bottom of Memorial Hill, Chalmers Street, and a wreath laying ceremony will take place, followed by morning tea provided by the Wanaka Lions. Commander Lyal Cocks, RNZN Rtd, said that the three services will provide our communities greater choice of participation. “We have wonderful places to pay tribute and as we do so it is a fitting reminder of how fortunate and thankful we are for the sacrifices made by the people we remember on ANZAC Day,” he said.

DANIELLE BUTLER newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz Children have been cooking up a storm in the kitchen during their school holidays, as part of the Master Chef Raw Food Challenge Day. The challenge, held as part of the Community Networks Holiday Programme, saw 45 children split up into groups of two to four and create their own dish using all fresh ingredients donated by the Mediterranean Market. Emily Wilson, facilitator of the holiday programme, said that they were very grateful

to the Mediterranean Market, who had helped them put on the challenge to teach the children about healthy food. “We really wanted to make it exciting, and get them to think of something that they would like to eat at home that they wouldn’t normally think of,” Emily said. Ten-year-old Oliver Cohen, who shaped his home-grown healthy carrot snack into a high five, said that he would be asking his mum to make similar food at home. wanaka pool opening sooner The new Wanaka pool at Three Parks will be opening sooner than was provided for in the 10 Year Plan. This decision was made after the 10YP was adopted last year. The capital cost is budgeted at $12.3 million with the operational deficit for 2016-17 to be funded from a targeted rate of $101 per residential property in the Wanaka Ward. This will rise to at least the $184 per year that was signalled in the 10YP for 2017-18.10YP for 2017-18.

This would involve reducing the rates for residential flats; and increasing rates on land that is zoned for development but still being used for farming, to discourage landbanking.

Warm winter woollies appeal for refugees Former Hawea resident Jill O’Brien has appealed to the community for warm clothes to help the first group of Syrian refugees to arrive in Dunedin tomorrow, Friday, April 22. Jill’s hope is that as we enter ski season, people will be getting rid of last year’s old thermal clothes, ski jackets and merino wools, which could help the former refugees become used to the colder climate, unlike that of Syria. The appeal has already gathered a good response, with people offering to provide Jill with children’s clothes and ski jackets to take back down to Dunedin with her following her visit to Wanaka next week. She then plans to donate everything to the Red Cross. New Zealand Red Cross Secretary General Tony Paine said that they are looking forward to establishing a resettlement centre in Dunedin. “Dunedin residents are famous for their southern hospitality, we know they will have open hearts and hands as they welcome new people to their wonderful city,” he said. -Danielle Butler, Wanaka Sun

Your Daughter & HPV

HPV is a very common virus that can be spread through sexual contact. Four out of five sexually active people become Dr Fiona MacLean MBChB, BSc, MRCGP infected some (UK), FRNZCGP time during their lifetime. Most HPV infections clear by themselves, but some types can cause cell changes on the cervix that may lead to cervical cancer many years later. More than 70 percent of cervical cancer and 90 percent of genital warts are due to HPV infections. The Ministry of Health offers all girls in Year 8 an HPV vaccine through a school programme. Although this seems young, timing is important because the vaccine is able to prevent HPV but does not treat it. Vaccinating girls and young women before they become sexually active reduces their chances of getting cervical cancer later in life and reduces the likelihood of abnormal smears requiring invasive treatment. The vaccine works by triggering the body’s immune system to produce its own antibodies against the HPV types that cause most cervical cancers. The vaccine is administered as a series of three injections over a six-month period. It is important to have all three doses. The vaccine can be given by our nurses if your daughter has missed the school programme, missed some doses or prefers to have it at the practice. Women over 20 can also have the vaccine but need to pay for it. If you have questions, feel free to call and talk to one of our specialist sexual health nurses – Sue or Jackie.

COMMUNITY NETWORKS

We love our people! KATE MURRAY Volunteers form a huge part of our operations at Community Networks, and each of our volunteers spends their day differently. School Holiday Club volunteers might find themselves at the movies, supervising kids as they build their own scarecrow or visiting local festivals. Meals on Wheels drivers deliver food locally and Wheels to Dunstan drivers take people to Dunstan Hospital. Our reception volunteers help with community enquiries, the day-to-day running of our office and management of the foodbank. Justices of the Peace visit our office twice weekly to offer a JP service. If you have some spare time to give, whether it is a couple of days during the school holidays, a few hours a week, or a day or two a month, there are voluntary roles available for you through Community Networks. We offer our thanks to all our volunteers. Community Wellbeing: As we come into winter, we know that things can get a bit harder on different parts of our community. Through the Life Matters group we encourage everyone to be aware of

their own wellbeing, as well as the wellbeing of those around them. The Life Matters group has recently been working with our local ski operators to develop programmes promoting wellbeing (both physical and mental) among their staff in the coming season. Some operators give their staff access to: organisational counselling program and brief intervention service; fresh fruit in staff rooms; sunscreen and hand sanitizer; a smoke-free work environment and team activities. There are plenty of opportunities for all of us to promote the wellbeing of those around us, particularly through our workplaces, and we encourage everyone to do what they can. Upcoming Workshops: We have been working alongside the Otago Chamber of Commerce to bring three workshops to the not-forprofit sector. The workshops are “Courageous Conversations in the workplace”, “Governance and Management” and “Successful funding applications and sponsorship”. The cost to attend is $40 per workshop. The dates of these are yet to be confirmed however if you are interested please ring us on 443 7799 to register your interest.

Shaping our Future focuses on events STAFF REPORTER editor@thewanakasun.co.nz Shaping our Future is hosting a new forum in Wanaka and Queenstown to examine the issues and opportunities currently affecting the events industry. The forum will identify issues that need to be addressed in the short to medium term as well as looking to the future of the events sector. A new taskforce will be formed to produce a strategy report with key recommendations for the future of events in the district. “The events industry has grown and changed

within the last five years,” Shaping our Future chair David Kennedy said. “The forum is an opportunity to look at where we are now, what are the pressure points and opportunities, and, perhaps most importantly, where do we want to be in 50 years.” The forum will be facilitated in world café style with groups working together around tables. It will be inclusive of all ages and interests and it will endeavour to seek consensus through prioritisation. The Wanaka forum will take place at the Lake Wanaka Centre next Thursday (April 28).

Wanaka doing it for ourselves on plastic bags GINA DEMPSTER

Phone: 03 443 8000 Top of Helwick Street, Wanaka OPENING HOURS: 8AM TO 7PM MONDAY TO SUNDAY (INCLUDES PUBLIC HOLIDAYS)

/ WanakaPharmacy

It is exciting to see the energy around making Wanaka a plastic bag-free town. And it is timely, because discarded plastic is creating some big problems. It is estimated about half of turtles world-wide have eaten plastic, probably because plastic bags floating in the ocean look like their favorite food, jelly-fish. Plastic can kill turtles by blocking their intestines, or they can starve to death because their stomachs are full of plastic. Many other marine species are eating plastic too; scientists say more than 90 percent of seabirds have swallowed it. Plastic is washing up on beaches around the world and collecting in current-based giant whirlpools like the North Pacific Gyre. Over time and under sunlight, plastic breaks down into tiny particles. Called ‘microplastics’, they may also be eaten or sink to the ocean floor; wash up on beaches or float around carrying organic pollutants. The ultimate impact of these tiny pieces of plastics on the environment is still being studied. Plastic is an amazing material, and one which has transformed our lives. Think cars, phones, houses, helmets; very few of us would want to, or be able to, live without it. But it is a real waste of plastic to use it once or twice and then throw it away. It is estimated that a million bags are used in the world every minute, most of which are discarded after just a

few minutes’ use. Action is occurring around the world , as governments and communities realise that we can’t go on trashing the marine environment for a few minutes of convenience. England introduced a mandatory 5p charge on plastic bags for large shops in October 2015. In December 2015, Tesco, Britain’s largest retailer, said usage had dropped by 80 percent. We know a small charge on plastic bags is extremely effective, but there is no political appetite to do it here in New Zealand. That is why groups like Plastic Bag Free Wanaka are really important. They remind us why our individual habits matter, and they help us find alternatives. Right now, they are running a competition to design a Wanaka reusable bag logo. It will be so cool to see locals and tourists carrying them and being proud to say no to singleuse plastics like plastic bags and one-use water bottles. It is another great example of Wanaka locals doing it for themselves , just like when Wastebusters was set up to recycle by our community 15 years ago. Entries for the Plastic Bag Free Wanaka reusable bag close on May 1. The winning designer will enjoy more than $300 of Wanaka goodies like Paradiso tickets and The People’s Bread loaves. All the details are on the Plastic Bag Free Wanaka Facebook page and the Wanaka Wastebusters website.

Get inspired for winter 2016 TRUDIE MILLAR Personal stylist Take a good look at your wardrobe. Are you excited about what you see? I have spent the last week cleaning out my closet. Throwing out what bores me, what doesn’t fit right or has been around too long, and storing summer favourites. I love clearing out and filling up again. It challenges you to think creatively about how you dress. There is no better time to update your look than a change of season. Make sure you invest in one or two staple items, from new winter collections, to keep your look fresh and current. Surprises are much more endearing than what has gone before. The colour pallets for this autumn/winter are stunning. So many beautiful warm tones coming through from designers. Rich plum, olive green, rust, gold, tobacco, mustard, burgundy, cream and coral … inspired by the continued 1970s theme throughout fashion. These tones scream dramatic, moody, rich and organic. If your colourings present warm undertones this is your season, make the most of it. One of my favorite purchases this winter has been a gorgeous Mongolian-inspired fur

coat, in soft neutrals, that is simply luxurious. Fur coats in this part of the country should go without saying. They are hip, glamorous, warm and the perfect statement piece. I also love my black suede fringe scarf with peep hole details, and nude-coloured felt hat. Long-sleeve maxi dresses in abstract florals look great layered with a longline waistcoat. Think twice when putting away your summer dress. Ask yourself, could it be revamped for winter? Wear layered with a thin long-sleeved skivvy underneath in your favorite neutral. Look out for structured pleated skirts that fall below the knee, that can be dressed down with your favorite pair of sneakers and worn with a simple tee. Wide leg culottes and jeans are something to explore. Flared pants are taking on the style of bell bottoms if you are keen to take the 1970s look the whole way. Don’t underestimate your shoes this winter. I was jumping with joy to see pale flesh-toned boots arriving in stores. Nude and creamcoloured ankle boots, and shades of warm browns. Pointed toe this season is best. Fall in love with texture this winter. Knits, wool, suedes, leathers, embroidery and anything that takes your fancy. A collection of hats are your perfect accessory so be sure to stock up. Happy shopping!

Community joins ORC in velvetleaf operation STAFF REPORTER editor@thewanakasun.co.nz

VIV MILSOM journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz Wanaka's Autumn Art School is running this week at Mount Aspiring College. Now in its 27th year, organiser Robyn Van Reenen said student numbers are up over 200 and nearly all of the 17 courses are fully subscribed. “There are no major changes this year, but we do have three new tutors, all from Melbourne, taking classes in botanical art, book arts and printmaking.” Robyn said many of the tutors return to the school and well over 50 percent of the students return, many again and again. “We work hard to keep the students and the tutors

happy, so we are really chuffed that it does seem to be working. I think where we live makes a difference too.” On Wednesday evening the school was open to the public when author Philip Temple repeated the Memorial lecture he gave to the NZ Society of Authors during Writers' Week in Wellington in March. His theme was “Where we were and where we are now”. On Friday April 22, the school is again open to the public between 1pm and 2.30pm. “People can come and have a look around the classrooms to see what the students have been doing. It is informal and students may still be working.”

Community volunteers have joined Otago Regional Council (ORC) staff and their counterparts from other agencies, to help rid the invasive pest plant velvetleaf from fodder beet crops in the Otago region. In recent weeks, ORC staff had been supported by staff from the Hawkes Bay Regional Council, Hawkes Bay environmental consultancy company Habitat Biodiversity and Pest Management Ltd, and botany students from the University of Otago. ORC director environmental monitoring and operations Scott MacLean said the input from about 40 volunteers this week, including farmers and students from Lincoln University’s Telford campus, “would be welcome cavalry for the ORC staff who have been working long hours, in many cases seven days a week”. The major biosecurity response, led nationally by the Ministry of Primary Industries, has involved 20 ORC staff inspecting 1800ha of farmland in Otago. Velvetleaf weed has been confirmed on 38 properties throughout the region. Scott MacLean said ORC staff had begun inspecting a further 76 properties covering about 1100ha of fodder beet crops possibly contaminated with velvetleaf. “It is a race against time, because farmers want to start using their fodder beet crops for stock feed. However, thanks to the involvement of volunteers, we should have inspected all the remaining properties by the end of this week,” Scott said. He said the focus was now on South and North Otago, with most inspections in Central and West Otago completed. “The velvetleaf seed can remain active in the soil for up to 60 years. Every time it is disturbed, it risks spreading any seed which may have dropped from the plant. This means farmers will need to remain vigilant over the coming years even if the velvetleaf plants have been removed,” Scott said.

SUN VIEWS

VIEWPOINT Library wi-fi overuse on wet days The overuse of the wi-fi at Wanaka Library has become a problem at peak periods and especially as the library has become a dry hangout in bad weather for many travellers. I regularly use this library and at times can hardly get to the books for people laying around on the floor using the wi-fi - some of whom are not keen to move. Sure it is wet outside but there must be other places in town offering access to wi-fi. Maybe it would be a good idea to only allow wi-fi use for NZ library members or charge a substantial fee. I don’t want to discourage travellers from

Wanaka as, after all, they spend money here that helps to pay for facilities such as our fantastic library but we do need to ensure that the library can be used by everyone not just the huge volume of travellers I have met there on wet days. The library staff do a great job trying to manage this problem safely but for them to be abused by a traveller asked to remove his pack is not acceptable and reflects poorly on other travellers. As for the recent vandalism, shame on you! Chris White

Response from Queenstown Lakes District Council corporate manager, Michelle Morss: During the creation of the peak visitor management plan for the library, we considered whether we should restrict access to wi-fi for non-members. When we looked closely at what visitors were doing, we found that many wanted to charge their devices rather than use the wi-fi and they tended to stay longer to ensure the devices were fully charged. As a result we have limited the accessible

power points to specific zones in Wanaka library, set up a new device-free zone and our staff make sure that all travelling visitors understand and stick to our well-publicised House Rules. We are constantly monitoring the situation as the community grows and welcome all feedback that can help inform our peak visitor management plan.

Three-quarter sized plans So, I went to bed after an informative dinner party, baffled and disgruntled…This season Wanaka has enrolled over 340 children, making [football] the most popular sport ever in Wanaka, let alone the growth in the adult teams. Which is not surprising, as the Otago Daily Times reported it is the fastest growing sport in Otago, and by all account it is just going to get bigger. So how could our democratic leaders, policy makers and “main” developers make such an awful, shortsighted decision. It just seemed to go against all common sense. Surely these influential people don’t want their legacy tarnished by such a crazy call. The community would remember who it was that made these decisions…anyway time to sleep, and maybe it will work its crazy course another day! I startled myself, I woke in the night…Of course, it all suddenly became clear…how stupid I was, and, oh how clever they are, but then, that is why they are where they are. I take my hat off to you sirs and madams. It is the lights. The floodlights. If you build a three-quarter sized pitch, you will only use three-

quarters of the power to light the pitch. Over 1000 years, it will save Wanaka an absolute fortune - serious money. And there I was thinking it had something to do with the advertisement offering 1200 houses at a reduced price to families who play hockey. Or the letter sent to FIFA asking if Wanaka could start playing football with 8.25 players per side, a size 3.75 ball, 33.75 minutes each half and goals six yards wide. How wrong I was. I was now excited, maybe there would be room to build a three-quarter sized tennis court, a hall could take more ping-pong tables if they were smaller, the current golf course could be reduced to 13.5 holes opening up that area to more house builds, and, most exciting of all, I worked out that if you removed the middle wall of a double squash court, you may just be able to squeeze in three three-quarter sized squash courts with no middle walls. We are not after scapegoats, just heroes. No plan can’t be changed. No project can’t be extended. Mark Hadida

Wanaka Tennis Club hosted a quadrangular vets doubles tournament last weekend against Southland, North Otago and South Canterbury. At the end of the first day of the tournament, Wanaka and Southland both had two wins against North Otago and South Canterbury. The bad weather held off on Sunday so all games could be completed before the rain.

“It all came down to the last mixed doubles match which Wanaka managed to win, putting them 7-5 ahead in matches,” Club captain Jeanette Hatten said. “North Otago beat South Canterbury to take out third place.” Jeanette said there was great tennis played with some very close matches. “It was a great social weekend with our visitors enjoying our lovely courts and town.” Pictured: Tony Marsh, with his eye on the ball, playing for Wanaka.

Wanaka runners show what they are made of

PHOTO: SUPPLIED

DANIELLE BUTLER newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz Wanaka came out on top in the second annual Wanaka Sun trail marathon on Saturday, April 16, with Jan Hron, who lives in the town but is originally from the Czech Republic, first to cross the finish line in a time of two hours and 49 minutes. He was followed ten minutes later by Queenstown’s Paul Preston, with Queenstown’s Rosie Hill the first female runner to finish in a time of three hours and 31 minutes.

Wanaka’s ladies showed strong performances as Elizabeth Pell took first place in the female under-10 5km and Zoe Smith came first in the female under-16 5km. Sammy Burke not only came first in her category but also took the female 5km top spot out of all categories. Active QT’s managing director Adrian Bailey said that the weather was fantastic and that the event had run very smoothly, although a date change may be possible for next year’s Wanaka Sun Marathon. Pictured: Wanaka’s Jan Hron crosses the finish line.

Youth versus experience HUGH PUGH Football correspondant Youth met experience in an exciting football match between Wanaka FC and Wanaka Youth on Saturday April 16. Pembroke Park was the setting for an end-to-end game with a number of chances. Newly formed Wanaka Youth playing in sky blue played from the back throughout the contest and gave an encouraging display with plenty of running. But it was the wellestablished Wanaka FC kitted out in yellow and black who took the game by the scruff of the neck, finally forcing a breakthrough at the midway point of the first half. After a series of good openings Youth’s undoing was cross from the right which saw in-form striker Matt Florida leap like a salmon to bullet a header into the net, taking his tally to seven goals for the season. This was followed up by two excellently finished efforts by Paulie Hodgson, the latter an unstoppable drive from the edge of the box.

THE WANAKA SUN

Wanaka FC went in at halftime a deserved 3-0 up. This was familiar territory for Youth who impressively came from 3-0 down last week to level 3-3 only for a last minute goal from Queenstown Classics to thwart their efforts. It looked like a similar story could unravel here when some great footwork ended with Adam Hewson calmly slotting home, 3-1. A much improved Youth in the second half caused numerous problems but it was Aidan Butler who made it 4-1 to FC after another cross caused problems for the youngsters. It looked like the match was back on when Tommy Smith’s looping corner caught everyone out and curled into the top corner. Alas, this fizzing, fast-flowing game of passing football was finally ended when Al Carmichael latched onto a Matt Florida through-ball delicately chipping over the on-rushing goalkeeper. A superb way to end. The final score of 5-2 saw Wanaka FC rise to the top of the league with old foes Wakatipu next up at the Events Centre, Queenstown.

Testing track earns Dougal second Talent centre to be based in Wanaka DANIELLE BUTLER newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz

STAFF REPORTER sport@thewanakasun.co.nz

Some interesting competitors took part in this year’s Contact Epic mountain bike challenge around Lake Hawea and Wanaka, including an 85-year-old first time competitor all the way from South Africa and the first ever unicyclist to compete, Australian Richard Rees. Wanaka’s Dougal Allan crossed the Epic finish line in four hours and 48 minutes, coming a close second to Alexandra’s James Williamson, who pipped him to the post by just two minutes. Wanaka topped both the classic and traverse courses, with Paul Wright and Ty Sarginson coming first in each route respectively. Dougal, who took part in the Epic course for the fifth time, said that it was possibly his hardest year due to the lack of time he had spent on a mountain bike due to increased triathlon training. “It can be the little things that make it challenging like sore hands and a sore back, that you wouldn’t get if you’d spent more time on the bike. It is really beautiful though, especially getting up to the top of the course towards Hunter Valley. It just feels like such a privilege to be on the bike,” he said. Pictured: Contact Epic winner James Williamson with runner-up Dougal Allan.

Football South and the Central Otago Football Association have decided to base the Federation Talent Centre (FTC) for Central Otago in Wanaka from May 2. Currently based in Cromwell, attendance has fallen for the FTC sessions which provide focused training hours with specialist coaching for the most talented young players. This year, Wanaka has one of the biggest clubs in the competition. The number of junior players at Wanaka Football Club has more than doubled in two years, with more than 330 players in 31 Wanaka teams this year. New Zealand Football describes the FTC as “a regional hub for talent development. Starting with a scouting process from age 11, players are recruited from age 12 onwards from their junior clubs to attend their local FTC.” The first Wanaka session will be held at Kelly’s Flat on Monday May 2. The session will be conducted by Ian Bell.
