More donations than ever for food bank drive
The Wanaka Sun’s ninth annual Christmas Food Bank Drive was a huge success, with a massive amount of donations from the community. The Wanaka Sun would like to thank the Wanaka Volunteer Fire Brigade, Luggate Volunteer Fire Brigade, Lake Hawea Volunteer Fire Brigade, St John Wanaka, Wanaka Police, St John Cadets, Wanaka Cubs, the Community Networks helpers, the Upper Clutha Rugby Club for the use of their club rooms, and all the people who drove, collected, sorted and donated the food bank goods. Big thanks also go to Alan McKay for coordinating the emergency services, Brent Arthur for coordinating the Hawea collection and Sir Tim and Prue Wallis who managed the Mount Barker collection.

Lake snow slanging match continues DANIELLE BUTLER newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz Otago’s Regional Council (ORC) has hit back at claims by its newly elected regional councillor Michael Laws that its past actions with regards to lake snow in the alpine lakes has been “grossly inadequate”. Dunstan Ward Councillor Michael Laws released a statement earlier this week accusing the council of doing nothing about the issue of lake snow and suggested that it apologise to lakeside communities and invest significant amounts of money in solving the problem. “Lake snow was notified to the Otago Regional Council in 2008. It did nothing until September 2016, and in that time the algae and its effects have taken a firm grip on Lake Wanaka and now spread to other lakes,” he said. “There are some massive lessons for our governance here. We dropped the ball big time and need to accept, apologise and atone.” ORC chairman Stephen Woodhead
said that the council takes the issue seriously and appreciates that the spread of lake snow is a matter of community concern. “We remain committed to preserving the excellent quality of our lakes and when we know what management options are available to us to respond to lake snow, we will consider how to proceed with these as a matter of priority,” Stephen said. Michael said that there now needs to be significant financial investment in the Southern Lakes, to which Stephen replied that DNA testing and arrangement of a workshop with experts to identify what further research is needed has been funded by ORC. “ORC has taken the lead in contracting Landcare Research to carry out specialised DNA testing of lake snow in the Southern Lakes, the results of which should provide more clarity around its origins, and from there guide a management response. Unfortunately this testing process is lengthy and time-consuming,” Stephen said.
Twelve days of preparedness DANIELLE BUTLER newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz As Kaikoura comes to term with the effects of last month’s devastating earthquake, Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) is using Christmas as an opportunity to spread the message about being prepared across the district. Communications manager Michele Poole, who has recently returned from Kaikoura, said that the idea behind the campaign was to make sure people think about what they need to do to be prepared in case of an emergency. “A major earthquake could strike most parts of the country at any time and our district is no different. People really do need to be prepared for anything. It’s not just earth-
quakes, we can be affected by heavy rain or snow storms. There are all sorts of things that people should be prepared for, and if you are prepared for one emergency you are usually prepared for another,” Michele said. The social media campaign, which sees one tip posted to Facebook every day over the ‘12 days of Christmas’, has so far focused on making plans within the family, reviewing supplies, back-up communication systems, vehicle preparation, quake-proofing the home and vulnerable people. “In any sort of emergency you’re expected to be able to look after yourself for a few days until help is available, as in Kaikoura. Civil Defence doesn’t just have an army ready to roll straight away,” Michele said.
THANK YOU Thanks to all our volunteers and the emergency service personnel for the help with this year’s
WANAKA SUN CHRISTMAS FOOD BANK DRIVE Thanks also to Brent Arthur, Alan McKay and Sir Tim and Prue Wallis; to the Upper Clutha Rugby Club for the use of their clubrooms; and to our community for its generosity. We couldn’t do it without you.

Council staff assist in Kaikoura DANIELLE BUTLER newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz Queenstown Lakes District Council’s (QLDC) communications manager Michele Poole has returned to Queenstown after nine days helping out in Kaikoura in the aftermath of last month’s earthquake. Michele, who is the Otago group public information manager for the Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management, travelled up to Kaikoura shortly after the November 14 M7.8 earthquake in response to a request for assistance. Michele said that her main tasks involved getting information to the community through whatever channels were available. “When I got there the power was down across the area, so every day several hundred people would come to a public meeting with the mayor and civil defence controller where they were given important updates and information about critical services,” Michele said. Michele spent time putting up posters and handing leaflets out daily to get essential information out to people, as well as using Kaikoura’s equivalent of the Upper Clutha Trading Post on social media to keep people updated. Michele, who did similar work in Christchurch following the 2011 earthquakes, also went doorto-door daily with building inspectors distributing chemical toilets for people to use while sewerage systems were not functioning. While Michele was there a shuttle bus was also

set up to allow people to access important medical and day-to-day services. “I helped the community to get basic information about what was happening. It’s important to focus on the needs of people, and this is part of the reason behind QLDC’s 12 Days of Preparedness campaign,” Michele said. Search and Rescue crews busy GLENDA TURNBULL journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz Police are urging tourists and locals alike to be prepared when going out into Wanaka’s great outdoors this summer. Search and rescue crews were kept busy last weekend with three separate incidents on Friday December 16. An Australian became stranded in a hut due to bad weather and was running low on food. He was rescued after setting off his locator beacon. A tourist used her cell phone to call for help from Mount Roy. She became disorientated and lost on the way back down. Her phone battery ran out and could no longer be contacted. Wanaka Police Constable Deane Harbison said, “It’s always a good idea to have a fully charged phone if you’re heading off adventuring. She managed to find her own way back down, but not before a lot of time and effort was spent in locating her.” Two mountain bikers were also reported overdue, but returned unharmed. “Once again this was due to communication issues. Always plan your trips into the hills thor-
oughly and leave clear intentions with someone,” Constable Harbison said. On Tuesday December 21 two climbers were rescued by Wanaka Search and Rescue after falling 200 metres on Mt Aspiring. They were found by another group of climbers at around 9.30am and an emergency beacon was activated. The men were flown by helicopter to Dunedin Hospital suffering moderate to serious injuries. The Department of Conservation ask people to know the five simple rules of the Outdoor Safety Code before you go to help you stay safe. Plan your trip. Seek local knowledge and plan the route you will take and the amount of time you can reasonably expect it to take. Tell someone your plans and leave a date to raise the alarm if you haven’t returned. Be aware of the weather. New Zealand’s weather can be highly changeable. Check the forecast and expect weather changes. Know your limits. Challenge yourself within your physical limits and experience. Take sufficient supplies. Make sure you have enough food, clothing, equipment and emergency rations for the worst case scenario. Take appropriate means of communication.
Harbourmaster’s water safety warning DANIELLE BUTLER newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz As summer draws in, more people are thinking about getting out on the lake, and the current changeable weather conditions mean that they are sometimes putting themselves in danger doing so. The drowning of a young man in the Kawarau River this December is the latest in a number of drownings across the country, serving as a harsh reminder of the dangers of the water. Queenstown Lakes District Council harbourmaster Marty Black said that people should use their common sense before going out on the water and find out if the weather conditions are safe by contacting one of the harbour staff or by THURSDAY 22.12.16 - WEDNESDAY 28.12.16
looking at weather reports. “It’s not rocket science, it’s just common sense stuff. We want to keep everyone safe and we’ll have a high profile in the next few months trying to do that. There’s just a lot of people that don’t think of these things. It’s such a waste when you hear about people drowning who have been out on the water on a lilo and other things designed for the swimming pool,” Marty said. As well as being aware of the conditions, Marty said it is a good idea to have a Plan A and Plan B when out on the water. “Plan A is all about where you’re going, your basic safety equipment and your contacts, so someone that knows what you’re doing. Plan B is to think about what you’re going to do if something does go wrong,” Marty said.

More donations than ever DANIELLE BUTLER newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz Wrapped Christmas presents, food, toiletries and a variety of other treats and essentials lined the Upper Clutha Rugby Club’s hall yesterday morning (Wednesday December 21) after a highly successful collection from the people of Wanaka on Tuesday December 20 and Hawea on Sunday December 18. Emergency service vehicles drove around both Wanaka and Hawea sounding their sirens, while volunteers followed and collected donations from the community. Community Networks manager Kate Murray said, “The community has been amazingly generous and
there’s a real sense of community spirit. It’s just amazing. These donations really help families who might have fallen on hard times due to unexpected costs like big medical bills or a broken down car.” Volunteers drove hoards of donated food to the food bank, while 74 hampers were made up for families in need, a 25 percent increase on last year. Ray White collected gifts for families and Wanaka’s Rotary Club donated funds so that families in need could also enjoy a nice meal on Christmas Day. “We need to thank the emergency services, everyone that turns up to help and of course the Wanaka Sun for pulling it all together,” Kate said.

Fire risk moderate to high GLENDA TURNBULL journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz The Otago Regional Fire Authority (ORFA) has advised the fire risk at present is moderate to high and is asking holidaymakers to take extreme care over the Christmas/New Year period. ORFA principal rural fire officer Phil Marsh said the risk will increase after the New Year. “There has been huge growth this spring and the
Silly season road safety DANIELLE BUTLER newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz Wanaka Police are turning their focus to road policing over the coming month, joining a nationwide effort to keep road users safe over the holidays. Response manager Senior Sergeant Allan Grindell said that a “strong focus” will be turned to the roads, particularly in relation to drink driving, speed and restraints, with a four kilometre per hour tolerance and increased police presence on highways in effect for December and January. Police reported that two people were caught drink driving on the roads last weekend, an offence that occurs almost weekly in Wanaka. Wanaka’s police presence will gradually build towards the New Year to reach a peak at New Year then slowly reduce again. “With more traffic on our roads there is more opportunity for crashes, hence our focus on trauma
causing offending, alcohol, speed and restraints,” Senior Sergeant Grindell said. Constable Deane Harbison said this week that road users in and around Wanaka would need to be courteous and patient, remembering that there will be many visitors who are not familiar with our roads. The increased road policing comes as seven more deaths on the roads have been reported compared to this time last year, with national manager of road policing Superintendent Steve Greally urging drivers to be mindful of others on the road leading up to Christmas. “This is a really high risk time on our roads, with people rushing around stressed and overtired with their minds on other things. It comes down to making good decisions, like choosing to drive to the speed limit and conditions, ensuring everyone is buckled up and not driving while impaired,” Superintendent Steve Greally said.

Wanaka is gearing up for the busy Christmas/New Year period, with indications of strong bookings from accommodation providers. General manager for Lake Wanaka Tourism, James Helmore said, “Comments I’ve heard from accommodation providers indicate it’s fully booked over the next two to three weeks, with any vacancies being snapped up quickly.” “Forecasts for the next three months are equally positive with
strong visitor arrival growth expected from all of our major markets. This is on the back of record air capacity into New Zealand and record growth rates being experienced in Wanaka. Passenger numbers at Queenstown Airport continue to break records, with a new record for domestic passengers in a day at 5735 passengers on November 20. Passenger numbers have increased 38 percent in the last three years alone. With accommodation full and record tourist numbers visiting the area, we look set for a very busy summer holiday period.

growth will dry out over the New Year period. The fire risk will change after New Year, especially in the Central area,” Phil said. The ORFA also asks that the public use outdoor machinery in the morning or late evening when temperatures have cooled and to take extra care when there are high winds. There is currently a total fire ban in force in the region, with the exception of permit holders. For further details go to otagoruralfire.org.nz.

Next step in developing Touring Route

Healthy heart award for kindy kids DANIELLE BUTLER newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz Hawea Kidsfirst Kindergarten’s heart-healthy environment has been awarded with a ‘Whanau’ award from the Heart Foundation. The kindergarten signed up for the Heart Foundation’s free Healthy Heart award programme Tohu Manawa Ora – Kōhungahunga in February 2015 and teacher Rose Gould said she and her team are incredibly proud to receive the award. “We applied for the Healthy Heart Award because it provided us with up-to-date and ongoing information for parents, as well as giving us a sound platform to base our healthy eating and activity procedures on. It is great to have recognition for the work we’ve done,” she said. Since signing up for the programme, partially
funded by the Ministry of Health and supported in Central Otago by WellSouth, children at the centre have been involved in daily active movement, developing and extending their physical skills through activities such as music and movement, balancing and obstacle courses. Heart Foundation Health Promotion coordinator Yvette Hodges said that everyone at the centre had worked really hard to achieve the award. “The teachers have found some fun and exciting ways to teach children about healthy eating and being physically active. They are doing a great job of spreading the message in their community about what it means to eat healthily and be active,” Yvette said. Pictured: Kindy kids and teachers receiving their award from WellSouth’s health promotion specialist Jo O’Connor on Monday December 19.
The Central Otago District Council (CODC) has approved the next stage required to establish a touring route that will link Central Otago with the network of other successful touring routes around New Zealand. The proposed route will connect Central Otago to Queenstown and Dunedin through the Maniototo and Strath Taieri. With the project approved in principle, the next step will be to price the establishment cost for the route – including signage, marketing/promotional requirements and infrastructure such as pull-off areas. Potential external funding sources and partnerships will be investigated as part of the costing process. “In the same way that the Otago Central Rail Trail has stimulated new investment, economic growth and development, the proposed touring route would provide visitors with ideas and information that will enable them to get out and explore more of our district and our ‘world of difference',” Central Otago Mayor Tim Cadogan said. “We aren’t committing new funding to the development of the route until the next stage in the project is completed. We need to see a fully developed budget and understand what the returns will be before the project is given the final go ahead by council.” Tourism Central Otago (TCO) Acting General Manager Glenys Coughlan said that the idea of a
touring route had been in TCO’s plans for a number of years. It was pleasing to see all the ground work that has been completed being recognised and the project being given approval to go the next step. “The New Zealand tourism industry’s ‘Tourism 2025’ strategy has a strong focus on attracting visitors throughout the year to smooth out the peaks and troughs in seasonal visitation. Its goal of dispersing travellers beyond the main tourism gateways adds to the diversity of visitor experiences and spreads visitor spend throughout the country. “Touring routes are a great vehicle for dispersing visitors beyond traditional tourism routes and with Central Otago’s distinctive seasonal offering the opportunities to promote the region as the destination with four spectacular seasons is strong,” Ms Coughlan said. “We see the proposed route as just the beginning. There are opportunities to develop other routes using the touring route as the backbone. It will enable us to create and promote all sorts of Central Otago experiences for domestic and international visitors – from wine to fruit, high country experiences to golf, cycling, walking, art and photography, heritage trails and more,” she said. “And, with mobile technology and apps we can add to the range of touring options readily and relatively inexpensively.”

Playscape officially opened GLENDA TURNBULL journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz The Wanaka Primary School’s new playscape was officially opened on Thursday December 15 at a full school assembly. Board of Trustees chairman Andrew Howard welcomed everyone and said,” It was about one and a half years ago that this was first brought to the board by the parent forum. We thought it was a fantastic opportunity to bring volunteers into the school to help with the project, donating time and money and providing this opportunity. A huge thank you for everything they have done on behalf of the board and the school.”
Wanaka Primary School parent forum member Nicolle Masters said, “the forum looked at how to improve and expand the outdoor play areas in 2014. We have been able to raise a lot of funds through the Wanaka Trail Ride event that we put on with Montessori.” The project cost a total of $195,000 with support from Central Lakes Trust - $50,000, The Lion Foundation - $45,000 and the Otago Community Trust - $30,000. The balance of $40,000 was raised by the Parent Forum. Pictured: Finley Smith and Hazel Murray show off part of the playscape area.
The New Zealand Dental Association is launching a new consensus statement on sugary drinks endorsed by key health organisations. The actions seek to reduce harm caused by sugary drinks consumption. NZDA spokesperson Dr Rob Beaglehole said, "This is about informing the public about the negative health impacts of sugary drinks, and to advocate for a comprehensive approach to reduce sugary drink consumption." The seven actions are introducing an icon on drinks indicating, in teaspoons, the amount of sugar in each drink; Independent monitoring and evaluation of food marketing, with an emphasis on marketing that influences children; Urging the government to adopt WHO limit guidelines on sugar; Encouraging public to switch to water; Introduction warning labels highlighting sugary drinks as a risk factor for obesity, diabetes, and tooth decay; Working with schools and the Ministry of Education to introduce ‘water only’ policies; Introducing ‘water only’ policies to council facilities and events and introduction of a ‘sugary drinks’ tax in line with WHO recommendations "Current sugar labels rely on confusing calculations such as sugar per 100ml or per serve, rather than the total amount in the bottle. People are more familiar with teaspoon measurements. An icon label for number of teaspoons is needed for sugary drinks," Dr Rob Beaglehole said.

The proposal would see a full-strength 600ml bottle of fizzy drink state ‘contains 16 teaspoons of sugar’. Local schools are already on board with the NZDA’s message, minimising sugary drinks at school and encouraging water. Wanaka Primary School principal Wendy Bamford said, “We don’t have a tuck shop at school and the Subway and Munch Your Lunch don’t have sugary drinks. They provide fresh water and fresh fruit brain breaks. We urge parents to send water only.” Hawea Flat School principal Sue Heath said, “We don't have a policy but we encourage children to bring water or fill their drink bottles from the drinking fountains at school - it is stated that this is our preferred choice. There is no canteen here and no option for children to purchase lunch at school other than the occasional barbecue, usually a fundraiser.” Mount Aspiring College principal Wayne Bosley said sales of drink at the school canteen are mainly water. “Seniors have options of iced tea, and slushies are sold which are mainly ice with some Fresh Up. This has been in place for quite a while. The canteen also has sugar-free food options available, with 90 percent of the food sold in the canteen made on site, so we have more control of the ingredients that go into the food sold.” The preschools spoken to by the Wanaka Sun - Oanaka Educare, Aspiring Beginnings and Wanaka Preschool - all have a water and milk only policy.

had many years’ experience with the Waitaki District Council and my extensive work as the chair of the Rules Reduction Taskforce I believe I have a good insight into how Central and Local Government can and should work together. "I also feel very positive about my role as the Minister for Small Business. Small businesses make up a huge part of our regional economy, I acknowledge their importance and look forward to working closely with them. Mrs Dean said she believed the Prime Minister Bill English had pulled together an incredibly strong team to take forward to next year’s election. "I feel positive and energised about these new promotions. I will look forward to continuing to represent my electorate with pride while stepping up to these new challenges."

Sections snapped up in Lake Hawea’s latest residential development Quartz Development Group officially released Sentinel Park, their 90 lot residential development at Lake Hawea last week. Already more than 50 of the sites are sold or under offer. Sales Director for Quartz Development Group, Vicki Spearing said that the majority of buyers have been young local families who previously considered themselves priced out of the market for high quality large sections. With recent sales of smaller sites in Hawea selling for $249,000, $245,000 and $258,000, the Sentinel Park sites represent good value priced mostly around $200,000. With an average size of 903m2 and many of them over 1000 m2 these sections easily accommodate a good size family home along with plenty of space for a trampoline, boat, and a tradesman’s van and tools. “It is perfect for families. The development was designed to have an open and spacious feel by combining the neighbourhood reserve with large practical sites,” Vicki said that buyers really appreciated the fact that all the sections have got a price on them
and are being sold on a first come first served basis. The prices range from $190,000 to $265,000 for the best one on the edge of the neighbourhood reserve. There are plenty of sites left of various sizes and prices, and even though there is always a mad rush of business before Christmas she is finding many families are keen to secure a site before all the holiday makers come to town, and are committing to options despite the time of the year. The Sentinel Park sales and purchase agreement includes a 2 week due diligence clause for the buyer so if someone wants to choose a site, they can make an offer and then take time over the holiday period (and a bit beyond) to talk to family and consider if it is really what they want and how it might work for them. Centrally situated in Lake Hawea, with expansive mountain vistas these flat, north facing sites are easily accessible to the lake and local facilities including the bowling green, playground, library, community centre, the Hawea pub and of course Saliz café – known for the best ice creams in the

region. (worth a trip out to Hawea ) With beautiful bike tracks and the purpose built “wave” for surfers and kayakers just down the road there are many reasons people are choosing to live in Hawea. This is a vibrant, active and caring community that attracts like-minded people. Vicki has found buyers want to purchase a section in Sentinel Park because they want to be part of a community that values family, and time together, and not feel tied to a mortgage 24/7. Quartz Development Group’s vision is not just about selling sections, but on developing real communities. They hope
Sentinel Park is the first of many. They aim to create attractive and well-presented developments that protect and improve on their natural surroundings and provide residents with amenities which provide a focal point for the community to get to know each other. As well as planning a couple of information and “meet your neighbours evenings” early next year they intend to have edible plants, fruit and nut trees in the reserve and picnic tables beside a covered BBQ area, subject to council approval. Quartz Development Group see Sentinel Park as a quality development that buyers will choose to live in, not just end
up there because it is all they can afford. For their flagship development it is especially important the result is something they are proud of and that people talk about as a great example of what can be delivered. With titles expected November 2017 for stage 1 and March 2018 for stage 2 there is plenty of time to design and plan a home. Construction is hoped to start onsite late January. Assaults on ambulance officers not tolerated GLENDA TURNBULL journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz St John will not be tolerating abuse and assaults on ambulance officers from the public this festive season and has sent a strong message - hands off. In the last year frontline ambulance officers nationwide have been hit, kicked, punched, spat at, and verbally abused nearly 3000 times. A third of these cases involved physical aggression and violence, with up to ten incidents a month being serious enough for ambulance officers to need hospitalisation and ongoing treatment. One paramedic had a bow and arrow pointed at his head, another had a knife held to him and told that if the seriously
ill, unconscious patient died, so would he. “My ambulance officers have had enough,” St John Chief Executive Peter Bradley said. “We simply won’t enter a dangerous scene, we will retreat and your mate or loved one won’t get the treatment they need while our personal safety is at risk.” “We recognise that any situation involving emergency services can be stressful and emotions can run high but there is a clear pattern of behaviour here related to alcohol and substance abuse, and largely at weekends.” Half of all ambulance abuse and assaults over the last year involved alcohol and recreational drug use while 15 percent could be attributed to mental health issues. They occurred predominantly in metropolitan centres.
St John ambulance officers receive training to help them recognise dangerous situations and have processes to withdraw or not enter until back-up arrives. The organisation is committed to ending the practice of single crewing but says the public needs to do their part, too. “Ambulance officers are caring, non-judgemental professionals there to help but we ask the public to respect our profession,” Peter said. St John acting territory Manager Dianne Payne said the Central Otago area is well staffed for the Christmas/New Year period. “Extra staff have been employed for the busy period in both Wanaka and Queenstown to cover the many events that are running. Cromwell and Alexandra are also well covered with existing staff in the area.”

Public consultation for cemeteries bylaw GLENDA TURNBULL journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz At a full council meeting of the Queenstown Lakes District Council last Thursday December 15, the proposed Queenstown Lakes Cemeteries bylaw was approved for public consultation using the special consultative procedure. Councillors Penny Clark, Craig Ferguson and Ross McRobie will be participating in a hearing panel to consider and hear submissions in the new year. The current bylaw is due to expire
thewanakasun.co.nz
on March 20, 2017 and the new bylaw would replace it simplifying and modernising the existing regulation of council cemeteries. Part of the process will include the implementation of the Cemeteries Handbook which will improve public understanding of services offered at council cemeteries. There are ten operational cemeteries within the Queenstown district, including Cardrona Cemetery and Wanaka Cemetery. Albert Town Cemetery is closed and the Hawea Cemetery is managed by the Hawea Cemetery Trust.

Queenstown Airport celebrates bumper year GLENDA TURNBULL journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz This year Queenstown Airport Corporation (QAC) has seen record breaking passenger numbers and has invested heavily in infrastructure setting it up for a year of growth and expansion in 2017. Earlier in the year the Queenstown Airport runway and lighting infrastructure were upgraded and after-dark flights commenced in May and June, helping the airport community grow from 350 to 500 people. The addition of after-dark flights aided the increase of passenger numbers across all months, with QAC reporting an all-time high in August of 1.7 million passengers in the previous 12 month period. Car parking expansion in November added approximately 50 spaces, an increase of over 10 percent, to assist with demand for car parking during the busy summer months and beyond. The commercial zone also had a revamp, with commercial pick-up and drop-off now available in this area. QAC chief executive Colin Keel said the runway expansion and car parking infrastructure works were a “critical part of the airport’s short and long term growth plans”. “It’s been a big year at Queenstown Airport in many ways. At the begin-
ning of the year we committed to a number of initiatives to better understand and provide short term solutions for the increased demand on car parking at the airport.” “We’ve completed the tasks we set ourselves and have already taken action by adding an additional 50 car parking spaces for summer and conducted research on users of SH6 for parking. We also are active in conversations on an airport park and ride trial which would offer an affordable, long term parking solution.” “We’ve achieved a lot in a short space of time. This will continue in the New Year with works to improve vehicle flow at the airport entrance, establishment of a new roundabout, addition of 55 car parks to the staff car park, relocation of the coach parks to Chris Read Green and the addition of a dual lane to part of the access road. To ensure things run smoothly over the busy holiday period, QAC has announced that no major construction works will take place at the airport from 15 December to 15 January 2017. QAC will commence Stage 4 works in late January next year, with works expected to be completed by June in time for the busy winter season. In conjunction with stakeholders, QAC is currently developing a 30-year master plan for Queenstown Airport.

Caring kids join charity drive DANIELLE BUTLER newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz Children from Oanaka Educare’s Kahikatea class have rolled up their sleeves and got involved in this year’s Wanaka Sun Christmas Food Bank Drive. When the three to five year olds, pictured with teachers Gemma Wilson and Becca Bown, started talking about Christmas this year, they decided to focus on sharing, giving and thinking about others. “We began thinking about what other people might like and what else we can do to help others. When we saw the advert for the food bank drive in the Wanaka Sun we decided we would get involved and it went from there,” Becca said. The children decided that the Christmas tree

Residents against chlorination GLENDA TURNBULL journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz Hawea residents voiced concerns at the temporary chlorination of the town’s water supply at a Hawea Community Association meeting on Tuesday December 20. Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) chief executive Mike Theelan announced the decision after receiving advice from Public Health South. The decision was made as a precaution to ensure the safety of residents and visitors over the busy tourist season. The water supplies will be chlorinated from mid-December through to the end of March 2017 and installation of chlorination delivery systems was due to start from December 12. Residents were baffled as to why there was a need to chlorinate the water when last year a UV treatment and filtration system and new bore water intakes had been installed. Wanaka Community Board chairperson and Hawea resident Rachel Brown said she could empathise with the community. “They have been told they have a state of the art water system and we still need to chlorinate the water. The residents of Hawea want a chlorine-free water supply, so it’s not a surprise that people in Lake Hawea THE WANAKA SUN
find it pretty hard to accept the water still needs to be chlorinated,” Rachel said. “The temporary chlorination is a council operational decision and has been introduced after advice from the chief medical officer of Public Health South. The council can be liable if someone gets sick. They have to show they have taken all practical steps to make sure people don’t get sick.” QLDC has subsequently reviewed the risks to the public surrounding unchlorinated supplies within the district and, after seeking expert medical and legal advice, decided on the temporary summer measures. The council is also investigating the possibility of permanently chlorinating all residential water supplies in 2017. “The decision to permanently chlorinate the water will go through a public consultation process and will have to be made by decision of the community. We need to be considerate of people’s opinions and wishes and it is really important that the information gets conveyed thoroughly and considerately,” Rachel said. Residents have set up a Facebook page Hawea Stand for Pure Water outlining information on the chlorination of the water supply.
in the foyer of Oanaka Educare would be their donation tree, and along with their families they brought things in for the food bank drive to put under the tree. “We’ve tried to teach them this year that Christmas is about more than just having presents. We’ve been doing a lot of charity stuff but we wanted to do something in the community that is more relevant to them. This is something where they can get involved and see the process,” Becca said. Free parking to ease congestion
VIEWPOINT
GLENDA TURNBULL journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz With the crowds of Christmas and New Year nearly upon us Queenstown Lakes District Council is opening up the Wanaka Showground for overflow parking to help ease the congestion in the town centre. The showgrounds will be open for free car parking from December 24 – February 19 from 7.30am – 7pm. QLDC communications officer Jimmy Sygrove said, “We’re anticipating that we’ll be able to fit around 200 vehicles in there, but this is dependent on the number of campervans and large vehicles that use the parking. There will be signs at the showgrounds themselves indicating the area that it is open for parking, there will also be signs explaining that overnight parking and freedom camping is forbidden, and cars that break the rules may be clamped.” Over recent months cars have been parked on the grass along the lakefront (pictured) when the carparks have been full, causing damage to the

grass and congestion on the lakefront. Jimmy said parking will no longer be allowed on the grass by the foreshore. Rocks, signs and new bollard fences will all be in place by the end of this week. “The rocks which are in place now are already having an effect in that the grass areas are being used by the public and the lake is a lot more visible,” he said.
Private Plan Change 51 declined GLENDA TURNBULL journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz Private Plan Change 51 has been declined after the Hearing Commissioner’s recommendation was adopted by the Queenstown Lakes District Council at its full council meeting last Thursday, December 15. Peninsula Bay Joint Venture (PBJV) sought to rezone an area of land at the northern end of Peninsula Bay rezoning the land from Open Space to Low Density residential. The land is owned by Infinity Group company Peninsula Village Ltd and Wanaka Bay Ltd, owned by Murray Frost. Initially the rezoning involved 6.11 hectares of land to be developed into 26 residential lots. This was modified twice through the process by PBJV, firstly at the hearing to 4.37 hectares with a 24 lot development and then in closing submissions to
3.5 hectares with a 21 lot development. Commissioners David Mead, Andrew Henderson and Mel Gazzard said in their report the land change area is in an identified Outstanding Natural Landscape. The land borders a Department of Conservation reserve that follows the shore of Lake Wanaka. The reasons for their recommendation were that the plan change would have a negative impact on recreational values through the loss of open space zoned land, the land had landscape value in its relationship with the northern extent of the Peninsula Bay residential area and the claimed ecological benefits of the plan change were marginal at best while the ability to vegetate a larger area would be lost. There were 207 submissions received with the majority opposing the Plan Change. The developers have the opportunity to appeal the decision in the Environmental Court.

SELF-EMPLOYED AND NEED FINANCE HELP? Getting a home loan can be challenging especially when you’re self-employed. The Wanaka and Queenstown market is full of small business owners who are working hard to grow into more substantial operations. The issue many find is that once their business starts to take off that’s when they need more funds to grow or even buy a house. This can create a disconnect, as typically banks will only consider a business’ past trading history when determining its ability to repay a new loan. Borrowing money then becomes difficult, not to mention frustrating, as even though cash flow may be strong, lenders may not be interested if there is insufficient proof to back this up. As a result many business owners have to delay buying or building a home or expanding their business until the new financial year. Businesses that have been trading for less than two years are often in a similar boat. So what are the options available for business owners wanting to buy or build a home? One option is to work with your accountant/financial planner to establish your cash flow position and profit position. Investing this time early to get the books
THE WANAKA SUN
in order can offer rewards when it’s time to apply for a loan later. Having documentation to prove income from an accountant and understanding the process can help get you where you want to be faster, easier, and sooner than you thought possible. If you’re self-employed and would like to explore all your finance options regardless if you want to buy or build your own home or fund business expansion, a Mike Pero Adviser can help. Simply call your local finance expert Mark on 021 275 5129 for an obligation free discussion and to take a step closer to owning your own home.
Hi, I’m Archie North, aged ten, and I feel privileged to tell you about the amazing endangered grebes that live in our very own Lake Wanaka. It all started when John (the awesome person who looks after the grebes) found out I had a huge, lifelong love for wildlife. John then asked me if I wanted to help him with his project to increase the numbers of the grebe population (which is going great so far). This is a fabulous opportunity to get close up to wildlife. I now help John along with another new friend (Jack Sandford) to build nests for the grebes to live in and take data on eggs and record all activity that goes on round the nests. Grebes are amazing creatures with a large orange frill that they use
to look intimidating to predators and let me tell you, it works!! I find the grebes feathers so intriguing. Guess what? Grebes pretty much never get wet even though they spend about 80 percent of their day in the water and it’s all because of their amazingly oily feathers! To the untrained eye they are cute birds sailing peacefully through the water, but are your eyes deceiving you? Actually, they’re very competitive creatures fighting for their home each day against none other than each other! Overall this has been a great experience for me and I would like to thank John for this superb opportunity. Archie North grebes.co.nz

First team Olympic qualifying comp STAFF REPORTER editor@thewanakasun.co.nz The Cardrona NZ Park & Pipe Team wrapped up a week of World Cup competition at Copper Mountain, USA, with several athletes meeting the qualifying criteria for the 2018 Olympic Winter Games. It was the first full park and pipe team outing within the Olympic qualifying period, with 14 Kiwi athletes competing in snowboard and freeski halfpipe and snowboard big air. Three athletes made it through qualifying rounds and achieved top six results in the finals. Byron Wells finished fourth in men’s freeski halfpipe with Miguel Porteous landing a solid sixth place finish at his first World Cup final. Janina Kuzma finished fifth in the women’s freeski halfpipe finals. While just missing out on a podium finish, Byron said he was “pretty happy to come away with fourth for the first comp of the year.”
Janina took a strategic approach to her first competition of the season. “Qualifying went well and I stuck to the game plan, putting down a run that would get me through to finals and focusing on clean execution of tricks and good solid grabs” she said. “It’s exciting to see the whole team doing well.” Wanaka’s Zoi Sadowski Synnott achieved a career best result in the big air event. The 15-yearold up-and-coming snowboarder was “over the moon” to finish in ninth place. To qualify for the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang, Korea, athletes will need to meet qualification, nomination and selection criteria set by the International Ski Federation, Snow Sports NZ and the New Zealand Olympic Committee. FIS eligibility criteria for snowboard and freeski halfpipe and snowboard big air requires an athlete to achieve one top 30 World Cup result and 50 FIS points in the qualifying period.
Cromwell events set for all levels Three upcoming Cromwell events have races to suit a variety of fitness levels. Veteran athlete and event organiser Bill Godsall this year took on the running of a mountain bike event, triathlon and road cycle race from the Cromwell and Districts Promotion Group. It’s great to see more and more people getting into mountain biking, there’s such a range of tracks here and it’s not just fit young adults, there’s more teens and more older folk too.” Four mountain bike courses have been set out for the Bannockburn Classic on December 30, he said. “There’s a family recreation course which we encourage parents to ride with their children,

a sport ride and classic race, through to a new adventure ride for those who may have done the classic and are looking for a new challenge. This has uphill with some awesome downhill and in my opinion it's a very cool course. It starts earlier, at 2pm and is on private land not usually accessible to the public," Bill said. Entries were also open for The Gate Lake Dunstan Triathlon on January 2 and Lake Dunstan Cycle Challenge on January 8. The triathlon also suits lots of fitness and skill levels, incorporating running, swimming, cycling and kayaking options. The cycle challenge, follows a 96km loop around Lake Dunstan on the main road, passing through Luggate township.

Upskilling Chinese snowsports instructors GLENDA TURNBULL journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz Local snowboard instructor Richie Johnston has just returned from a two week trip to Chongli, China where he helped train 24 new snowsports instructors for the Chinese ski industry. Richie (34), is Snowboard training manager at the Rookie Academy and normally spends his New Zealand winters training instructors on Treble Cone and working for Snowboard Instruction New Zealand. Through the network of trainers, he was granted the opportunity to travel to China. He travelled with Rookie Academy’s Dean Hunter to Wanlong Resort, a three to four hour drive northwest of Beijing to train and certify new instructors to meet the demand of the growing ski industry. While there, Richie had the opportunity to co-present a talk on snow education and training in New Zealand. “It was certainly different from what I normally encounter. I experienced freezing cold temperatures, weird and wonderful meals and got an insight into a progressive nation who are keen to bring more snow and ice sports to the millions,” Richie said. During previous seasons, Richie has seen an increase in Chinese training in New Zealand, not just on Treble Cone. “It

was great to unite with a group of trainers from New Zealand in a ‘little’ town somewhere in China, I never thought my passion for snowboarding would take me there.” “It was such a pleasure to connect with a very passionate group of snowboarders, they were committed to learning the details and improving their teaching and riding skills,” Richie said. Richie had a translator who bridged the gap of understanding with his students, two of whom spoke english. “I was humbled by their dedication and excitement
for snowboarding and especially learning more about how they could teach more effectively.” There is huge development in hotels, transport and mountain resorts ahead of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. The majority of the events will be held in Chongli. Winter sports are now in vogue in China and enthusiasts are flocking to the hills to try the latest gear. The 20152016 season saw a 30 percent increase in equipment rentals and sales. Richie will be returning to China in March to train more instructors.
The annual Cherry Festival, held from 11.30am to 1.30pm at the Cromwell Heritage Precinct on New Year’s Eve, will be a afternoon of competitions involving pie-making, stone spitting, cream-pie eating, counting and colouring-in. Cromwell and Districts Promotion Group community relationships manager Brigitte Tait said free face painting would be available, some disney characters would visit and local identity Greg Wilkinson would be officiating for the highly-contested stone spitting competition. The Cromwell Farmers and Craft Market will also take place on the day from 9am to 1pm in the upper courtyard beside the festival venue at McNulty Green.
