Athletes clean up at Colgate Games STAFF REPORTER editor@thewanakasun.co.nz spiring Athletics Club member Jack East has been awarded a Nick Willis Scholarship at the 2017 Colgate Games in Invercargill. Jack was one of only four grade 14 athletes recognised for outperforming their peers after three days of tough competition. In the grade 14 boys category, Jack won the 400m race, was placed second in the 100m race and was placed third in the 200m race. New Zealand Olympic medalist Nick Willis congratulated the young athletes, saying they were names to watch in the future. “These kids have done an outstanding job. As a past participant of the Colgate Games myself, I know this competition is tough,” Nick said. “Although I was not able to be in Invercargill over the weekend, I want to congratulate these athletes and all the participants in the 2017 Colgate Games.” Athletes from all over the South Island and some from the North Island converged on Invercargill for the three-day event last weekend. faced high winds and occasional showers while competing in the full range of track and field events at the Surrey Park ground. Aspiring Athletes Club members aged ten to 14, many competing in large fields of over 30 athletes, experienced unprecedented success for the club, surpassing all previous years the club has attended the Games. The grade 12 girls had a highly successful competition with the relay team (pictured) of Abby East, Georgie Bruce, Molly Barham and Ella Landeth winning the 4x100m race. Georgie also won a gold medal in the high jump and was placed second in the 80m hurdles. Abby also won a second gold medal, for the 400m race, and a silver medal in the 200m. Bronte Crowe won a bronze medal in the 1500m. In the grade 10 girls events, the relay team of Estelle Gellatly, Millie East, Lucy Landreth and Billie Crowe won silver in the 4x100m. Billie had a hugely successful weekend, winning gold in four events - the 800m, 400m, high jump and long jump. She also won bronze in the 100m. Millie won a bronze medal in the 200m race. Wanaka Recreation Reserve draft management plan submissions heard

ubmissions were heard in respect of the Wanaka Recreation Reserve draft management plan yesterday (Wednesday January 18), but local Loris King said many people may not have made submissions because they were confused about where the reserve was. The Wanaka Recreation Reserve, as described in the Plan, fronts Lake Wanaka encompassing an area of 7.3ha and is bounded by Wanaka-Mount Aspiring Road, McDougall Road and Stone Street. The southern area of the reserve is occupied by the Wanaka Lakeview Holiday Park, and north of the reserve is leased by the Upper Clutha A&P Society and the Upper Clutha Rugby Football Club. Only 13 public submissions were received in the consultation period with six submitters wishing to be heard.

out and having a voice. I speak in support for the use of the grounds for storage places, but without compromising what a reserve should do. We acknowledge it is a special and a unique contribution to the character of Wanaka. It (the plan) promotes uses by the people we want to use it,” John Baynes said. Wanaka Hawea Reserves Trust member Alan Cutler said he feels the Wanaka Recreation Reserve is an extremely important and strategically located reserve and is worried the reserve will be undervalued. “The Management Plan is a status quo document. It doesn’t look to the future. All the present users have not been stated in the Plan. The Rowing Club presently use the site, but are

not mentioned,” Alan said. QLDC parks and reserves planning manager Stephen Quin said, “It is always the plan with management planning that they are a stitch in time and there is no change in advance. The trick is to have policies to enable that vision but without being too prescriptive so that it becomes out of date.” Well South health promotion specialist Jo O’Connor and Southern District Health Board representative Marie Roxburgh submitted that the reserve should be designated as smoke free. “Smoke free is a very important point, but council needs to consider whether it is necessary as a policy relating to this reserve or consider it as part of the wider policy in regards to the Management Plan and the future vision,” Stephen said. Both Alan Cutler and John Coe applauded the council for attempting to address the parking situation, but thought another part of the grounds would be better suited for future parking. Loris King submitted that the title of the Plan was confusing. “Most people do not even know the Wanaka Recreation Reserve is the showgrounds. I think this should be clarified in the title.” Loris was in favour of the Stone Street paper road being turned into a pedestrian access to the reserve, as were a number of other submitters. She was also in favour of the reserve accommodating other buildings for clubs in the future, as where Alan Cutler and John Coe. John Baynes agreed, but submitted that any future building should be kept in line or behind the rugby club, not near the lakefront. “I congratulate council on the plan. Potentially toxic algae confirmed STAFF REPORTER editor@thewanakasun.co.nz Dog owners are being warned to be vigilant when exercising their pets alongside Otago’s rivers and streams and stop them from eating any scavenged material after the toxic algae Phormidium was confirmed in the lower Cardrona River. Warm weather post-Christmas causes river levels in Otago to drop. Phormidium occurs naturally in waterways, but can become a problem in summer when the algae can form thick mats on river beds, especially during low flows. Otago Regional Council science manager Dr Dean Olsen said high river flows before Christmas had kept the region’s rivers relatively free of Phormidium. “It is important that people using waterways are aware of the risks associated with its possible presence, and are alert to this wherever they are in Otago,” Dr Olsen said. Some cyanobacteria produce toxins that are a possible health risk to humans and animals if eaten, and they can also cause irritation to the skin and eyes. Phormidium mats can indicate that other cyanobacteria posing a risk to human health may also be present. People are advised to avoid contact with waterways where the mats are present. If anyone becomes unwell after contact with affected waterways, they are advised to see their doctor. There have been cases in New Zealand of dog deaths associated with toxic algae where dogs have eaten the mats formed by Phormidium, having been attracted by their deep earthy odour. The mats can detach from the river bed and accumulate along the water’s edge where it is readily accessible to dogs. Dogs seem to like the smell of Phormidium and should the material be toxic at the time it is ingested, severe poisoning, and often death, can result in dogs that are particularly sensitive to the toxins. “If the bed of a river is covered in thick dark brown or black mats that have a velvety texture and a musty smell, it is wise to be cautious and

avoid that river site,” Dr Olsen said. Pets should be taken to a vet immediately if they show signs of illness after coming into contact with algal mats. The greatest risk is to dogs, which are more likely to consume the mats in the water. “The most common signs that a dog might have consumed toxic algal material are lethargy, muscle tremors, fast breathing, salivation, twitching, paralysis and uncontrolled shaking, convulsions, or frothing at the mouth soon after being in the water.” Anyone concerned their pet may have consumed GLENDA TURNBULL toxic algae should contact their vet immediately, journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz he said.

Boozy bike thefts on the rise DANIELLE BUTLER newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz A series of bike thefts recently indicates that the crime is on the rise in the town, with owners recovering their bikes in most instances. Bike racks on the lake front are the common hot spot for light-fingered cyclists, usually late at night, and the number of bikes being recovered elsewhere in town afterwards suggests that the thieves are using them as a quick and easy way home after a night at the pub.

It is rare that such crimes are reported to police, as bikes are usually recovered the next day and returned to the owner with the help of Facebook sharing, with police only recording a child’s bike and a wheelchair having been handed into the station over the busy holiday period. One of the most recent incidents took place last Friday (January 13) when Aimis Smith’s bike was taken from outside Kai Whaka Pai, and was discovered the next day dumped on the lakefront.

After a fantastic opening gala night on Friday January 13, held at Holy Family Catholic School, the winner of the Craig Investment Partners Aspiring Art Prize was announced as Amelia Guild of Ashburton for her acrylic piece Beef Cheeks by Jowl. The first prize was $12,500 to mark the tenth anniversary of the Art Prize. Runner-up was David Penman for his oil painting Digital Alien in Wanaka. The Landscape Artist prize went to Janet De Wagt for her piece The Last Snow - from Old Dunstan Road and the Prize for Best Work under $1000 went to Freda Ryder for

her piece Overflow. Amelia said she was thrilled to receive the award. “I feel very humbled to have won against the calibre of artists that were in the competition. I live in the Canterbury high country on a farm and the cattle are around me all the time and often feature in what I do,” Amelia said. Amelia has been painting for about 15 years. “It is nice to get the validation from the judges. My congratulations to all the other award winners,” she said. Amelia is currently working towards an exhibition at the Artist’s Room in Dunedin in March. Pictured: The winning painting Beef Cheeks by Jowl by Amelia Guild.

Submissions closed for the Draft Parks and Open Spaces Strategy on December 16 with QLDC receiving 45 submissions. Strategy was developed in 2002 and it was envisaged this would be a ten-year strategy. Over the past 14 years the district has grown rapidly along with a huge increase in visitor numbers, prompting the need for an updated strategy. The Draft Parks and Open Spaces Strategy looks at the usage demands, future growth and visitor projections and seeks to provide even distribution of open space and to ensure a more proactive and strategic management of open spaces both now and into the future.

Rental registration upset GLENDA TURNBULL journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz A Wanaka resident is upset after receiving a notice from the Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) about registering visitor accommodation. Kevin Gingell-Kent received a notice along with around 791 other residents asking them to register their property if they were using it as short term/visitor accommodation. “I received a notice from QLDC on January 11 saying ‘it appears you may have overlooked the need to register the property you own for visitor accommodation’. I do not advertise anywhere as I do not rent out anything and have not in the two years we have had the property. It was a long term rental prior to our possession. So where is the council getting their data and how competent is their gathering? It is quite upsetting to be accused of swindling the council and other ratepayers as a consequence,” Kevin said. QLDC communications officer Michele Poole said the council offered an amnesty in 2014 to encourage people using their properties for short-term visitor accommodation to register, and if necessary, apply for a resource consent. “The next step was to check properties that were advertised online on sites such as Airbnb and Bookabach, and match them with our rates da-

tabase. Some advertisements didn’t give a name or a street address but showed a googlemap-type reference. Some of these have turned out to have matched to an incorrect street address,” Michele said. The audit began after the amnesty period, so it is possible some properties that had been advertised had changed hands, and were no longer used for short-term rental. In other cases, tenants may have been advertising a room for rent without telling their landlord. “About 10 percent of people who received the letters have contacted us to say they have received them in error. By asking people to register properties that are being used for short-term accommodation, we are making sure we are treating all accommodation providers on the same basis so those who are using properties for commercial purposes pay their fair share of rates and if the use reaches the threshold where a resource consent is needed, the property meets the requirements for parking, safety, facilities etc.,” Michele said. Michele pointed out that making your home available to family and/or friends at no charge is not visitor accommodation. Renting your property for periods longer than three months in a row to the same people is classed as residentially renting your property and is not classed as visitor accommodation either.

Hawea stands for pure water GLENDA TURNBULL journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz The ongoing discussion about the chlorination of the Hawea town water supply will continue at a public meeting to be held at the Lake Hawea Community Centre on Saturday January 21. Hawea residents voted against chlorination at a meeting in December, but the Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) has chlorinated the town’s water supply since mid-December and will continue through to the end of March after advice from the chief medical officer of Public Health South. Hawea resident Pip Harker said in an email to the Wanaka Sun that the community had voted to not chlorinate the water. “The water system was upgraded last year at great expense. This included moving the intake deeper into the gravel and there hasn’t been an E.coli outbreak since,” Pip said. In 1987 the community voted to pay for UV water treatment over chlorination which was free. Jude Battson commented, " We had to pay $5000 per household for

the scheme and opted to pay the extra amount for UV. The brand new water scheme installed at Scotts Beach has a state of the art UV system which is designed to cope for our population. The community made a decision that it is proud of and is justified in being miffed that council would not show support, and stand up to supposed higher powers on our behalf. We do not want poison in our water. We do not want that flavour." A Facebook page Hawea Stand for Pure Water has been set up and is investigating whether chlorinating the water after the ratepayers in Hawea have paid for the UV water treatment is a breach of contract. “QLDC say it is because they are worried something like Havelock North could happen here. Hawea Stand for Pure Water say rubbish to that. Not relevant and nothing would stop tourists from coming here. We believe it is more likely they are worried about being sued,” Pip said. The group (Hawea Stand for Pure Water) has a petition on Toko asking for the water not to be chlorinated and is encouraging residents to sign the petition to be delivered to QLDC.

Concerns over new pool PHOTO: SUPPLIED

GLENDA TURNBULL journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz With work now continuing on the new pool complex at the Wanaka Recreation Centre, there are concerns the new swimming pool will not meet the current needs of the community. A local mother of three has aired her concerns online asking whether there was any chance to petition Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) to improve upon the current plans for the pool. The concerns were raised as frequently the current pool was overcrowded and when there are swimming lessons and club lane swimmers there was little or no room for children and adults to use the pool due to the unavailability of a play lane. QLDC aquatics team leader Angie Calder said further consultation and changes at this stage would not be possible. “We are happy with the mix of facilities at the new centre. Through the consultation period learn to swim was a standout need for Wanaka. As we are currently, many families travel to Cromwell or Queenstown to learn to swim. Our operations team are currently updating our facility mix plan for the centre which was first done in 2011,” Angie said. The new centre will have a 8 x 25m pool, a spa

Jane was also in favour of a glass free and smoke free reserve. Stephen said, “We have got some very good points to consider and incorporate into the management plan. I think the historical context was a very good point made by a couple of the submitters and I am sure we can include this in the plan.” The public was then excluded for deliberations.

Bruce Hebbard said residents of Hardy Street and Lagoon Avenue signed a petition asking QLDC to reinstate the track. “We sent the petition into council and the QLDC arranged for it to be fixed. Contractors dug right down to road level and the footpath has now been reinstated with a benched fence. The residents are really happy with the outcome,” Bruce said. The track links the tracks from the Albert Town lagoon to Gunn Road.

One end will have a beach entry with a zero depth start to 0.3m separated from the rest of the learner’s pool by a wall. Angie said it would be wonderful to have a facility like Rolleston or Queenstown, but there were many things to consider, including capital costs for building such a facility. “It is not just about capital costs. It is also about operational costs which is an ongoing rate-payer consideration. I’m very excited about this new facility. It will be very nice to see it all come together,” Angie said. Angie has had previous experience with council pool operation at the Cromwell Pool. “I’m confident we can make the facility mix work well for the community and cater for all pools users,” Angie said. Current work on the pool includes groundwork, pipe laying, installation of sumps and preparation work for the installation of the sand filters. Council is also currently working on getting a renewal of the earthquake compliance certificate for the current Wanaka pool facility which expires in September 2017. Eye-sight volunteer returns from Africa DANIELLE BUTLER newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz Optometrist Katie Bennetts has returned from her month volunteering in Africa, helping up to 800 visually impaired people a day. Central Vision Optometry’s Katie, pictured, spent two weeks in Ghana and two weeks in Cameroon screening for eye disease, implementing education programmes and coordinating sight-restoring surgery. During her two weeks in Ghana she would see up to 400 people a day, and on her busiest day in Cameroon she saw 820. “It was hard work, and although I didn’t really know what to expect it was a bit more difficult than I anticipated. It was very hot and humid, particularly in Ghana which made me appreciate my nice air conditioned consulting room here,” Katie said. In Ghana, Katie saw most of her patients in local churches with another optometrist, a local staff member, two optometry nurses and a volunteer, while in Cameroon she worked with a larger team of 12 optometrists from New Zealand, the USA, Canada and Nigeria. Hundreds of glasses of different strengths donated by people in Wanaka, Queenstown and Alexandra were also taken over and distributed to those in need of them in Ghana. “The glasses donated by those lovely people have definitely

been put to good use. I expected to see some eye disease but I was quite shocked to see what I did see, things that you would never see here in New Zealand. It makes you appreciate how lucky you are to live here,” Katie said. Katie also expressed her thanks to Wanaka Lions Club, Wanaka Rotary Club and Wanaka Chamber of Commerce who supported her and her trip.

Alex assault prompts parent warning DANIELLE BUTLER newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz An incident at a primary school in nearby town Alexandra has prompted locals to remain vigilant when the kids go back to school. A 56-year-old Canterbury man has been arrested and charged in regard to an indecent assault on a child, which took place at a school holiday programme at Alexandra Primary School on Thursday January 12. Staff at the holiday programme called the police when they noticed the man talking to a child in the playground and behaving suspiciously. Detective Sergeant Brian Cameron said that thankfully the child was not injured nor do they appear to have been adversely affected by the incident and is reported to be doing well.

He added that police are able to reassure other parents that this appears to be an isolated incident and that they are not seeking anyone one else in relation to it. Wanaka Police’s Senior Sergeant Allan Grindell said that although Wanaka is probably one of the safest places in the world to live in and visit, it is important for families to work out safe practices to ensure a child will be able to manage, confidently and safely, their travels to and from school. These include walking with trusted adults or friends, sticking to a discussed route and not accepting rides from anyone unless prearranged with the family. “If children see anything unusual they should bring it to the attention of a trusted adult. The same applies to adults. If anything seems out of the norm ring police immediately. It is better for police to check it out and find it innocent rather than later have to investigate an offence,” Senior Sergeant Grindell said.

Originally from the Wairarapa, Alex studied medicine at Otago University both in Dunedin and Wellington. He and his wife Olivia then lived in rural Northland from 2009, where he worked in a variety of hospital roles and latterly in general practices across the region. In order to broaden his career experience, and for a change of scenery, the McLeods shifted to the South Island in mid-2016 and Alex worked at Dunstan Hospital in Clyde for six months last year. Sharing Shed starts to take off DANIELLE BUTLER newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz Hawea Flat’s Sharing Shed, thought up by mother-of-two Susan Allison, has been taking off in the past week, with produce donations coming in thick and fast. Susan first came up with the idea following a conversation with her sister who lives in Christchurch, where they have a similar idea called ‘the Hobo Hut’. “I really liked the idea and the more I thought about it the more I wanted to do it. Me and my group of friends have always done clothes swaps and it’s about expanding that kind of thing out to a larger group of people,” Susan said. “At this time of year everyone has so much produce which can create a lot of waste, for example you might put in a row of carrots and only use half of them. This way the amount of waste gets

reduced by people sharing their stuff,” she added. The shed, an old firewood shed picked up by Susan for free from Upper Clutha Trading Post, wasn’t much to look at to start with, and didn’t even have a floor. With the help of Susan’s husband Dean and their two children, who have been doing the shed up over the past week, it is becoming more and more equipped to deal with donations and Dean has plans for a door and a deck. “People have been really respectful so far and we’ve had some great donations of things like plums, bay leaves, seedlings, beans, shoes and a swing. We want people to know that there’s no expectations; please don’t feel that you can’t take something if you haven’t donated anything first. We want people to take things, that’s what it’s there for,” Susan said. Visit the Sharing Shed, pictured, at 820 Kane Road, Windmill Corner or search for ‘The Sharing Shed’ on Facebook.

Locals get behind Save Our Water GLENDA TURNBULL journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz A Save Our Water petition has locals concerned our precious water resources may be under threat from companies wishing to profit from it by bottling it and exporting it overseas. The petition is against plans to allow a West Coast consortium to export 800 million litres of water every month, which was given the go ahead with no public consultation. The resource consent to pipe the water from Mt Aspiring National Park was granted over 20 years ago, and there are further resource consents to be heard next month. If granted this will allow the building of a storage facility at Neil’s Beach. The petition states, “New Zealand’s precious water is under threat again. Local councils continue to grant these extraction consents for bottling or bulk export. These private companies

are taking advantage of minimal legislation that allows them to continue to profit from our water at next to no cost.” Otago Regional Council (ORC) media communications officer Mark Peart said there were no current resource consents to take water from either Lake Wakatipu or Lake Wanaka for a similar venture and that any such consent would have to be granted by ORC. “The Resource Management Act is very specific. There are various trigger points which indicate whether there is a limited notification or a full notification and it depends on the nature of the proposal. All the applicants have to do an assessment on environmental effects which if they are deemed to be major you are more likely to see a public consultation process,” Mark said. The petition for the West Coast project currently has nearly 10,500 signatures and will be presented to the New Zealand House of Representatives.

Shattered mall window DANIELLE BUTLER newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz A large window at the front of Spencer House Mall remains boarded up after the entire glass pane shattered last week. No-one was hurt in the incident, which occurred last Thursday (January 12) at around 8am. Mall manager Harry Briggs said that the shattering was caused by an installation fault resulting in ten

years of stress on the window, which is due to be replaced next week. Martin McKone, who owns the Multi Peak Fitness Gym located on the top floor of the mall, was on site when the glass shattered and knocked the remaining hanging glass down with the gym’s banner pole. Martin praised the prompt clean up response and temporary repairs put in place by the mall’s owners. Pictured: The boarded up window pane at Spencer House Mall.

SELF-EMPLOYED AND NEED FINANCE HELP? Getting a home loan can be challenging especially when you’re self-employed. The Wanaka and Queenstown market is full of small business owners who are working hard to grow into more substantial operations. The issue many find is that once their business starts to take off that’s when they need more funds to grow or even buy a house. This can create a disconnect, as typically banks will only consider a business’ past trading history when determining its ability to repay a new loan. Borrowing money then becomes difficult, not to mention frustrating, as even though cash flow may be strong, lenders may not be interested if there is insufficient proof to back this up. As a result many business owners have to delay buying or building a home or expanding their business until the new financial year. Businesses that have been trading for less than two years are often in a similar boat. So what are the options available for business owners wanting to buy or build a home? One option is to work with your accountant/financial planner to establish your cash flow position and profit position. Investing this time early to get the books

in order can offer rewards when it’s time to apply for a loan later. Having documentation to prove income from an accountant and understanding the process can help get you where you want to be faster, easier, and sooner than you thought possible. If you’re self-employed and would like to explore all your finance options regardless if you want to buy or build your own home or fund business expansion, a Mike Pero Adviser can help. Spotlight on stars’ wedding Blue Pools tourist’s near drowning DANIELLE BUTLER newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz Saturday January 14 was hailed as the closest thing New Zealand will ever get to a royal wedding. But the marriage of All Back legend and New Zealander of the year Richie McCaw to Black Sticks star Gemma Flynn was a normal working day for the drivers hired to transport guests to and from the highly publicised wedding. Drivers, working on one of two weddings they were hired for that day, were snapped by hoards of photographers waiting outside The Olive Grove venue as they ferried well known faces to the ceremony, including All Blacks coach Steve Hansen. Security was predictably tight at the event, with one driver, who did not wish to be named, transporting a bus full of guests being told they were

not allowed to take their phone into the venue before being unable to exit for some time as their name was not on the guest list. Another driver told how wedding guests were asked questions by waiting reporters, but remained tight lipped. Rumours were rife in town in the week leading up to the wedding, with the New Zealand Herald eventually spilling the details several days before. For the people who call town home, it was just a regular weekend, with locals torn between excitement and a desire to leave the couple alone. One local shared the news online, saying, “Exciting news, I hope they have a beautiful day,” with another commenting, “I think Wanaka does privacy pretty well. I wish them only the best.”

Ardmore address for franchise DANIELLE BUTLER newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz Global pizza chain Domino’s has confirmed that it will open a store in Wanaka within the next few months. Domino’s spokesperson Bronwyn Spencer said that a store would be coming to the town in April, opening at 34 Ardmore Street next door to Japanese restaurant Sasanoki. The news comes at a time when the Ban International Fast Food

Franchises from Wanaka (BIFFF Off) petition holds 1762 online signatures, with more signatures on petitions at cafes and restaurants around town. On BIFFF Off’s Change.org page, it is stated that once information and support has been gathered, it will be presented to Wanaka’s Community Board, although it is not yet clear when this will be. At the time of going to print, a spokesperson for BIFFF Off could not be reached for comment.

DANIELLE BUTLER newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz An Australian tourist is in a stable condition in hospital after getting into trouble in the water at popular visitor spot the Blue Pools. The 24-year-old man was swimming with friends at the pools, near Makarora, on Sunday January 15 when he got into trouble, with the reason why remaining unclear. St John communications advisor Ian Henderson said that St John was alerted to the “serious medical incident” at 3.56pm and a rescue helicopter was dispatched from Queenstown. Wanaka Land Search and Rescue’s response manager Allan Grindell said that by the time they got to the scene, around an hour’s drive from Wanaka, it was just a case of controlling traffic. “We are not sure of the reason but the guy had got into a wee bit of trouble. His friends tried to save him but he was pushing them down so they got out and we understand that he stopped breathing and sunk to the bottom of the water, for what could have been minutes,” Senior Sergeant Grindell said. He added that a Dunedin lifeguard who was already at the scene pulled the troubled tourist from the water to find him unconscious and unresponsive. Alongside a nurse, also thought to have already

been at the Blue Pools, the young lifeguard performed CPR on the tourist, who was then taken to Dunedin Hospital where he is now recovering and in a stable condition. Pictured: Popular tourist spot the Blue Pools, near Makarora.

No camping permitted on Rocky Mtn DANIELLE BUTLER newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz In last week's page three article “LWT clears up camping message” (Wanaka Sun, January 18), Lake Wanaka Tourism general manager James Helmore stated “While camping overnight on Rocky Mountain and Roys Peak is permitted by

the Department of Conservation (DOC), this is not something LWT will actively promote.” James would like to clarify that while overnight camping on Roys Peak is permitted by DOC, it is not permitted on Rocky Mountain. “I was meaning to refer solely to Roys Peak, as camping is most definitely not permitted on Rocky Mountain given its significance to Ngai Tahu.”

VIEWPOINT

Grebe Diary 16 January 15 2017 It’s not been the best of weeks on the grebe front. Totalling everything to date suggests that we have had 25 breeding attempts which created 90 eggs of which just 38 produced chicks. A marked feature of the breeding season is that it started later, incubation spans are longer and hatch rate is obviously very poor. On Wednesday last week, the first egg on nest 15 hatched, more than a week over the normal incubation span. On Thursday, Andy found a dead adult grebe on the shore of Mou Waho Island. On Friday, I noticed that the chick on nest 15 was on the platform and not on the adult’s back as is usually the case. I picked it up and popped it back under the sitting bird. It seemed very weak. Then on Saturday Toby Gunn and his mum Emily found a dead chick on the shore downstream of nest 15. The adult found by Andy weighed in at 739g, well below the normal weight of 1.1kg. A dissection revealed it to be a male, with no evidence of external trauma and a total absence of body fat. The little chick weighed in at just 19g; again well below the expected weight for a three-day-old chick. The adult has deserted the nest leaving

three unhatched eggs! There is a group of scientists at the University of Otago waiting to examine the insides of both grebes and I await their findings with interest. So all we are left with is three nests. Nest two has started again after an absence of birds for almost two weeks and is due to hatch on February 5, nest 14 looks hopeful with three eggs and due to hatch January 26. Nest eight has four eggs and is a week overdue. Bit glum this week. Sorry! John Darby.

Half marathon training diary - Week two Hi all, you join me on my second week of half marathon training and I’ve been braving this week’s awful weather to keep myself on track. Since last week’s nice and easy two mile run to break me in, I’m now up to the three and four mile marks, which still aren’t beyond my capabilities if I’m running on flat ground. Add in any incline and the added obstacle of the wind though, and it starts to become a different story. Training to run up hills, even ones of slight incline will be a big focus of mine in the next few weeks, as the last time I took part in a long run I was lucky enough to be in what quite possibly could be the flattest city in the world (Portsmouth, UK - if you were wondering). This week, I’m also stepping up my game in the form of a weekly boot camp and clean(er)

eating. As of today (Wednesday January 18) I’ll be getting stuck into three one hour boot camp sessions a week, alongside a healthy eating plan with the help of the awesome Tawna Woods. I’ve been boot-camping with Tawna for about six months now and, along with her help and support, it’s always been a fun and challenging experience and I know it will be super beneficial to my half-marathon training, providing a bit of variety to my programme. As for the eating side of things, anything will be an improvement to my Christmas ‘chocolate cake for breakfast’ diet. If anyone else is training for any of the Wanaka Sun events on April 8, whether it be the marathon, half marathon, 10km or 5km, I’d love to hear how you’re getting on - let us know on Facebook or email me at newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz. See you next week - Danielle.

Mountain bike fall on river track DANIELLE BUTLER newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz A 67-year-old woman is recovering from a serious leg injury after falling from her mountain bike on Sunday January 15.

Wanaka’s Land Search and Rescue response manager Allan Grindell said that ambulance crew and LandSAR were called to the Upper Clutha river track, where the lady was carried by stretcher for around 1km along the track by LandSAR to the waiting ambulance.

Predator Control in the Makarora/Wilkin Valleys THE PUBLIC ARE ADVISED that from Saturday the 17th January 2017, the Department of Conservation Central Otago District Office intends to apply cereal baits containing the pesticide sodium fluoroacetate (1080) over public conservation land in the Makarora/Wilkin Valleys. The poison will be used to control the numbers of rodents, stoats and possums. These introduced pests are threatening the viability of many populations of native birds such as the mohua (yellowhead), whio (blue duck), pīwauwau (rock wren) and kea. Description of the area The treatment area is approx. 38,500 ha - encompassing the Makarora/Wilkin and their tributaries the Fish, Blue, Young, Cameron, Wilkin and Siberia valleys. A detailed map of the treatment area may be viewed at the DOC Mt Aspiring National Park Visitor Centre (Ardmore St, Wanaka, 8:00am to 5pm Mon to Sun) or at www.doc.govt.nz/conservation/threats-and-impacts/animal-pests/pesticide-summaries/ southern-south-island. Method of control Cereal baits containing the pesticide will be sown by helicopter. The baits are cylindrical pellets approx. 3cm long, 2cm wide and weighing 6g. Each pellet contains 0.15% biodegradable 1080, and are dyed green to deter birds. The target sowing rate is 2kg of baits per hectare. The operation is managed by Paul Hondelink, Senior Ranger, DOC Wanaka, Ardmore St, Wanaka, 9305. This pesticide is poisonous to humans and domestic animals. Always remember: • • • •

DO NOT touch bait WATCH CHILDREN at all times DO NOT EAT animals from this area DO NOT allow DOGS access to animal carcasses.

Observe these rules whenever you see warning signs placed at public access ways in the above areas. When signs are removed you can resume normal activities. Temporary closure of operations area During the predator control operation, access to tracks, huts and campgrounds in the Makarora/Wilkin Valleys will be temporarily restricted for up to 24 hours. It is strongly recommended that people do not enter the treatment area during this time. Parts of Cameron Flat (Mount Aspiring National Park) will be temporarily closed to public entry by the Director-General of Conservation for reasons of public safety. For further information call The Mt Aspiring National Park Visitor Centre on (03) 443 7660 or email mtaspiringvc@doc.govt.nz.

Second WC medal for Corey STAFF REPORTER editor@thewanakasun.co.nz Alpine sit-skier Corey Peters has claimed a World Cup silver medal in the super-G at the Austrian resort of Innerkrems where the first World Cup speed races of the season were being staged. The current World Champion for downhill and super-G, put together a strong performance but finished 0.62 seconds behind Switzerland’s Christoph Kunz. It was Corey’s second podium finish of the week, having won one of two downhill races on Thursday January 12. Two separate downhill races were due to take place on

Thursday and Friday, but the schedule was changed due to some predicted poor conditions and both races were held within a few hours of each other. Corey skied a strong first race, winning by 0.05 seconds ahead of the USA’s Andrew Kurka and Canada’s Kurt Oatway. Corey looked good for another win in the second race of the day, knifing through the top half of the course and holding first place at the first interval time check. However, a slight miscalculation in the flat light saw him hit a bump and crash out of the course. Cardrona NZ para Alpine Ski Team mate, Adam Hall, finished seventh in the standing class.

World champions race Red Bull Defiance DANIELLE BUTLER newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz Wanaka’s three-time Coast to Coast champion Braden Currie will join US athlete and 2015’s XTERRA world champion Josiah Middaugh to compete against two-person teams from around the globe in this weekend’s Red Bull Defiance race. Over Saturday January 21 and Sunday January 22, course designer Braden and Josiah will compete against 70 teams, including three elite men’s teams, an elite female team and two elite mixed teams, including Wanaka’s multi sport and adventure racer Simone Maier with partner Marcel Hagener. Braden said that after the pair’s recent sporting battles, the Red Bull Defiance event would be a good chance for them to team up. “It will be awesome that Josiah will have my back for this epic two-day race, rather than be on my back chasing me down,” Braden said.

“Josiah is such a strong athlete and we have had some massive battles recently. I think we are very similar in a lot of ways; gutsy, determined and not afraid to give it absolutely everything to win.” The racing, which combines running, kayaking and mountain biking across eight high country stations around Wanaka, starts at 8am on Saturday and 6.30am on Sunday. On Saturday, teams will mountain bike 43km along the shoreline of Lake Wanaka in the Minaret Burn event beginning at Minaret Station. Then on Sunday, teams will take part in a lengthy ascent PHOTO: XTERRA/JESSE PETERS followed by a technical traverse across the ridgeline of Mt Alpha and Mt Roy. Any individuals wishing to take part can register at race headquarters on the lakefront for the Suunto Skins Skyline Traverse single stage events up to the race day and until the day before for the mountain bike event. Pictured: Josiah and Braden crossing the finish line in the XTERRA Pan America Championship in Utah in September, separated by only 7/100ths of a second.

Promising young triathletes shine GLENDA TURNBULL journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz About 260 athletes competed in the second event of the Sovereign Tri Series, held in Wanaka on Saturday January 14. In the women’s race Fiona Crombie from Christchurch took first place (2:07:05), followed closely by last year’s winner and Wanaka local, Simone Maier (2:09:41). Simone struggled in the run and, although she doesn’t deem herself a strong swimmer, she had a great swim and overall was happy with the race and second placing. Nicki McDadzien (2:10:06), a club member alongside Fiona took a third placing. Simone is pictured (left) with Fiona Crombie (middle) and Nicki McFadzien (right). Hayden Wilde was in great form off the back of his third place at Port of Tauranga last weekend. The 19 year old won first place in the standard distance race with a time of 1:48:03. “The legs were still a little frazzled from POT, especially powering up hills on hills. I was really happy coming out of the top swim bunch and heading out on the bike first, not knowing I had all-time bike legend Dougal Allan chasing me,” he said. Hayden got a puncture in the last 1500m of the bike leg which put him behind former local Dougal, but managed to catch up to Dougal after 5.5km on the run and brought it home on the final

Close competition for Jessie DANIELLE BUTLER newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz Jessie Fraser and horse Johnnie went up against some of the South Island’s top riders at the weekend in New Zealand Pony Club’s South Island Dressage Championships. Jessie came second in the warmup competitions on both days, sixth in the Saturday championships test and fifth in Sunday’s championships test. The Otago/Southland team, of which Jessie is the number one junior rider, came third overall. Twelve riders from across the South Island competed at the Otago

Taieri Showgrounds in Mosgiel on Saturday January 14 and Sunday January 15, with close competition between them. “It was a really tough field with some very experienced riders and all the scores were really close. There wasn’t much in it,” Jessie said. “We were lucky with the weather which was really good. Even though rain was predicted it held off and Johnnie was amazing,” Jessie added. Jessie and Johnnie, pictured, will head to the Ryal Bush two-day horse trial in Invercargill next week and Equestrian Sport New Zealand’s South Island Dressage Championships in February.

stretch, with Dougal just behind him finishing at 1:48:22. Wanaka’s Janus Staufenberg came in third (1:52:42). Merryn Johnston took out second in the female 35-39 and fourth overall and Andrew McLeod won the male 55-59 category. Pauline Baston won the female 60-64 category. Other Wanaka athletes to do well on the day were Pete Smallfield, second in male 25-29, Nicholas Kensington, second in male 45-49, and Julia Hunt, third in female 20-24. In the 3.9.3 race Wanaka youngsters Gregor Findlay (16) won the men’s race and Sammy Burke (17) won the women’s race.

Surprise second When cross country skier Campbell Wright borrowed equipment from family friends and signed up for the Ontario Cup in Duntroon, Canada over the weekend, he didn’t expect to end up on the podium. Racing went well on day one, with the 14 year old finishing third in the classic race. He raced even better on day two, clocking the fastest skate time. With the results based on combined times, Campbell finished second overall, only 0.44 seconds behind the winner. Campbell said he was “pretty happy” with the result and looking forward to his next race – the Eastern Canadian Championships - in early February just before returning to Wanaka to start the new school year.
