ocal athlete Braden Currie was in the lead at this year’s Coast to Coast, until defending champion Sam Clark overtook him on the bike leg with just under 25km to go. Sam from Whakatane, went on to win the event in 11:02:43 around eight minutes ahead of Braden who finished in 11:10:20 with Sam Manson of Christchurch coming third in 11:37:00. Braden said he rode pretty hard on the first ride. “I wanted to set the tempo. I ran well and had a really good transition and felt really under control on the run which I was really happy with. I got into the bike and had a consistent paddle. I felt relatively good, but it showed the work I hadn’t done. That came to pay me back in the end. I think it is pretty bitter sweet. An event like this showed me I can’t be that relaxed about an event of this scale. If I want to take the win and be world champion again I have got to focus on it more,” Braden said. Nelson’s Elina Ussher also made her winning move on the final bike leg after being passed by

anaka showed its overwhelming support for Sticky Forest when around 400 people packed the Lake Wanaka Centre on Tuesday February 14. The meeting was quickly moved from the Armstrong Room to the main auditorium when it became apparent more room was needed to accommodate the crowd. Bike Wanaka had convened the meeting to gauge community interest in Sticky Forest, to share the latest information and look at the logical next steps for Sticky Forest. Through the Ngai Tahu Claims Settlement Act 53 original owners were identified as owners of “the neck” (between Lake Wanaka and Hawea), but as
this was not available the 50ha Sticky Forest was given as a substitute. There have been 1019 descendants of the original owners identified and representatives of the owners appointed by the Maori Land Court are considering possible governance structures and future options for the land. Bike Wanaka committee member Simon Telfer facilitated the meeting and was joined by panel members, Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) chief executive Mike Theelan, QLDC councillor Ella Lawton, lawyer Phil Page, resource management consultant Ian Greaves and Sticky Forest owner’s representative Mike Beresford.
The owners have made a submission to the council to have the land rezoned from general rural to low density residential. “The reason for the submission was to give the owners economical sustenance from the land, but there is currently no access to it and we have asked the Crown to investigate this,” Mike Beresford said. Ian Greaves said every ten years the District Plan is reviewed and allows anyone to submit changes. “Mike has used this process to request the re-zoning from rural general to low density residential. Submissions have now closed and no further submissions are possible.
If the zoning change is approved the site may be developed into 500 residential sections,” Ian said. There were 200-300 changes submitted under the District Plan review, with this request only one of them. “There are so many changes submitted, and this submission was so small, that it has gone under the radar. Rezoning of the land is by no means a certainty. There is a full process for it to go through yet,” Ian said. The current submission to the council is to rezone the whole land. “We may look to revise it to re-zone half or less than half. One solution could be to develop 50 percent of the property and look at giving the other part to the community,” Mike Beresford said. Ella Lawton was asked what she would like to see happen. Attention is once again being focused on the state of the water in Lake Wanaka, Hawea and Wakatipu, amid growing concern in the community about the increase of algae in the lakes. The algae, also known as “lake snow” or “lake snot” first started appearing in Lake Wanaka in 2004, and is now also present in Lake Hawea and Lake Wakatipu. Dr Marc Schallenberg, Research Fellow in Freshwater Science at University of Otago has done and continues to do extensive research and monitoring of the algae, trying to ascertain why it is increasing. It clings to fishermen’s lines, clogs up water filters and boat engines, and sticks to swimmers, but as yet there are no definitive answers about why it is happening. In the last few days residents have been posting their concerns on social media about the state of the water filters leading into their homes. Peninsula Bay resident Chris Hill said he has to clean his water filter on his irrigation system every two weeks. “This all started a few months back when I lost water pressure in our house. I rang the council and they sent a contractor around who undid the front water valve and chucked our filter away saying the filters are useless. Since then I have had the problem with this slime blocking up the filter on my garden watering system. I went down to the council in Wanaka and was told it was too expensive to put a filtration system in place and the slime will not harm you,” Chris said. The Wanaka Sun contacted the Otago Regional Council in regard to Chris’ concerns, and a spokesperson confirmed there are no known health risks associated with the algae that produce lake snow. In regards to the possible filtration of water drawn from the lake, a Queenstown Lakes District Council spokesperson said the council’s infrastructure staff is currently investigating options for mass filtration and aim to present a report to the council in the next few months.
In response to the concerns raised by the community at recent local body elections, there are two public meetings being held in Wanaka about the issue on Friday February 2. The Wanaka Branch of the Royal Society of New Zealand’s meeting at the Lake Wanaka Centre at 7.30pm will outline what the scientific research tells us about the state of the lakes and enable the community to address their concerns. WRSNZ committee member Graeme Ballantyne said, “The meeting is an effort to bring the public up to speed with what the state of our lakes is at the moment and the future direction. It will also let the public know who has what responsibilities for the lake and what they may be intending to do about it. There will also be a chance for people to ask questions.” The headline presenters for the evening will be Professor David Hamilton, Professor of Lakes Management and Restoration, Waikato University and Dr Marc Schallenberg, Research Fellow in Freshwater Science, University of Otago. Wanaka Royal Society committee member Dr Graeme Ballantyne has advised that representatives from Queenstown Lakes District Council, Otago Regional Council, Department of Conservation, Land Information New Zealand, Fish and Game Otago, Guardians of Lake Wanaka, Lake Wanaka Trust, Alpine Lakes Research and Education Centre and Ministry for the Environment have all confirmed they will be present at the meeting. The Royal Society is encouraging everyone interested in the future of the lakes to attend. The second meeting billed as Happy Hour, is being held at the Presbyterian Church Hall at 5.00pm by retired aquatic scientist Laurel Teirney to explain how the community can be involved, together with the agencies and scientists to ensure the health of Lake Wanaka into the future. “I’ll share my experience of a successful community-based approach where the Fiordland community worked together with scientists and agencies to identify issues and come up with a management strategy for Fiordland. This resulted in The Fiordland (Te Moana o Atawhenua) Marine Management Act 2005,” Laurel said.
Exclusion zone on Lake Hawea

Wanaka schools now have a combined total of nearly 2000 students attending classes at the start of 2017. The first day at Mount Aspiring College (MAC) saw an official welcoming of the new students and staff members into the MAC family. The school now has over 900 students and well over 100 staff, with the hall very crowded for the Powhiri or welcoming ceremony (pictured). Wanaka Primary School principal Dr Wendy Bamford said there were 620 starting at the school this year.
“We are looking at 90 new enrolments throughout the year, so will end up over 700 by year’s end.” She said the school had a smooth start to the year. “We have stable staff numbers with a couple of new teachers joining us this year. The staff had a couple of pupil-free days when they undertook training. The new playscape is up and running. Now we have the older students saying, ‘When do we get our bit?’ We will now be looking at installing a fitness trail around the school for older students.” she said. Holy Family School confirmed there are 177 students at the school this year. Hawea Flat School has increased its roll to 211 students this year with ten classrooms, one more than last year.

Emergency services have been kept busy this week, attending car crashes, a serious house fire, airlifting an injured mountain biker and rescuing people from a sinking dinghy. Police were alerted to an incident at around 9pm on Thursday night (February 9) in which a 12-foot dinghy became submerged in Lake Wanaka leaving five people swimming for safety. Senior Sergeant Allan Grindell said that all five people were wearing lifejackets and were uninjured after their 100m swim back to shore off Lakeside Road. Queenstown Lakes District harbourmaster Marty Black said that the incident probably occurred due to too many people in the boat, which was designed ideally for two people. On Saturday, February 11, Wanaka and Hawea
being filmed in the area and Queenstown lakes District Council has cited safety reasons for implementing the zone. The QLDC harbourmaster will be patrolling the exclusion zone, which is in effect daily from 9am to 8pm.

A St John spokesperson said that two male passengers were transported to Wanaka Lakes Health Centre with minor and moderate injuries. Earlier that same day, a St John ambulance and helicopter were sent to a mountain biking accident at Cardrona Alpine Resort, where a 55-year-old woman was transported to Queenstown Lakes District Hospital with moderate injuries. In the early hours of Monday morning Wanaka and Luggate fire crews were called to a house fire in Luggate. A Fire Service spokesman said that there were no suspicious circumstances and the blaze was brought under control quickly. The house suffered extensive damage but no-one was seriously hurt. One person was treated for minor smoke inhalation.

The 2017 Festival of Colour (FOC) programme was launched last Thursday February 9 at the Lake Wanaka Centre. The seven-day programme of theatre, visual art, dance, conversation and music was presented by FOC festival director Philip Tremewan. “We have a whole cluster of international works, with three stylish shows from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival - Every Brilliant Thing, it shows why life is worth living, How to keep an Alien - a funny and tender one woman play, and the enchanting Portraits in Motion, done with photographs and flipbooks,” Philip said. New Zealand highlights include the hilarious Hudson & Halls Live, with world premieres of Wanaka writer Annabel Wilson’s work No Science to Goodbye, New Zealand poet Bill Manhire’s song and music performance Tell Me My Name and a full music programme in the popular
Central Lakes Trust Crystal Palace. A first for this year’s festival is Sing it to my Face, a sing-off between generations, a community singing about its experiences. Aspiring Conversations returns with speakers including scientist Siouxsie Wiles talking about antibiotics, Lloyd Geering and Laura Williamson talking about cycling, and Rhodes Scholar Max Harris and Australian human rights campaigner Shen Narayanasamy tackle ways to change the world. FOC co-chair Alastair King thanked the many sponsors who make the festival possible. “Around $1 million had to be raised this year to make this festival possible and make it the best little arts festival in the country. return to Wanaka for the third consecutive year this month, hailing it as the “ideal location” for the launch of its super pressure balloon (SPB). Members of NASA’s Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility are arriving with scientists from the University of Chicago’s Extreme Universe Space Observatory to begin preparations for the balloon’s launch, which is currently scheduled for late March/ early April. “We’re excited to once again be part of the Wanaka community and we appreciate the opportunity to work with the Wanaka Airport team to ensure yet another successful launch from Wanaka,” Debbie Fairbrother, Balloon Programme office chief, said. Alongside the news of the third launch, NASA has also confirmed that it has committed to the site as one of its global launch bases for up to ten years, a move which Wanaka Airport operations manager Ralph Fegan welcomes. “We’re delighted that NASA has confirmed a ten year arrangement to continue launches in Wanaka,” Ralph said. “Every year they’ve immersed themselves fully into Wanaka life, visiting schools and other local groups. We’re incredibly lucky to have such a wealth of knowledge and experience benefit our town.” NASA will now invest in a longer term operations base and, subject to required consents and approvals, it will move to land on the north-east side of Wanaka Airport and create a dedicated balloon launch pad, 600m in diameter. Disabled parks abuse high LGBTI survey doesn’t reflect town D

The group which manages New Zealand’s mobility parking scheme has found that disabled parking spots are being abused nationally, including in the Queenstown Lakes District. Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) communications manager Michele Poole said that in the past year, 661 fines were issued for parking in a disabled space without a permit. Of those, 374 have been paid, 79 are being prosecuted and 151 have been written off, usually because the person could prove they had a disability sticker that wasn’t visible. The balance are fines most recently issued and still within the period where people have time to pay.
Disability Action’s research in December revealed that there was only a 50 percent chance a car parked in a disabled space actually belonged to a person with a disability. Paul Sisson, head of Mobility Parking Action, a group that aims to educate and prevent the abuse of mobility parks by working closely with land and business owners, said that disabled park abuse is a huge problem. “People who park in these spaces wrongfully think they’ll only be there for a few minutes, but it never is,” Paul said. “Then the next person is there for a few minutes, and the next person and suddenly you’re taking away an opportunity to help a disabled person get on with their lives.”

Survey results indicating that New Zealand’s LGBTI community does not feel comfortable in public has been contested by the LGBTI community in Wanaka. The survey, commissioned by ANZ and launched last week, reveals that 39 percent of New Zealand’s LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex) community feels uncomfortable holding hands in public, and more than half of the 18 percent of non LGBTI couples said the same. Charlie Meyerhoff, founder of the LGBTI social group in Wanaka, said that New Zealand in general was an open-minded country and she felt safer here expressing affection than in some other countries. “I think Wanaka is a place a lot of people

I want to be transparent about what we want to do,” Mike Beresford said. Mike Theelan said, “We do not know what the outcome is, but if Sticky Forest was not available as a mountain bike reserve we would have a look at something else. Sticky Forest is an opportunity for us. From the council perspective we need to let these processes run their course.”

Almost one-third had been made to feel uncomfortable because of a negative response from others. “Before marriage equality it did feel a little bit more of an issue, but I felt a lot better about it after such a public declaration of equality. Now we want lots of PDAs [public displays of affection],” Chrissie said.

Presbyterian Support Otago and Kahu Youth are joining forces to reach out and recruit volunteers and invite anyone interested in becoming a volunteer buddy or mentor to an information session on Thursday February 23. Presbyterian Support runs the Family Works Buddy Programme which aims to offer friendship, support and guidance to children aged 4+. “Volunteers are carefully matched to their little buddies and can offer a range of benefits to the child including increasing their self-esteem, developing social skills and helping them make positive choices. Most importantly they have lots of fun,” coordinator Sharon Bell said. Kahu Youth run a mentoring programme for students at Mount Aspiring College and are also seeking to increase their pool of mentors. “Students are identified by teachers, parents, peers or themselves as need-
ing a little extra support to help fulfil their potential; whether that be with their career plans, socialising with their peers or working towards a specific sporting target,” Youth Worker Richard Elvey said. Volunteers need to have patience, self-confidence and the ability to listen. Confidentiality, honesty and integrity with a strong interest in helping young people achieve their potential are also required. Volunteers at a similar session in Queenstown recently talked with passion about how much they gain from their involvement in the buddy programme and clearly value the relationships developed with not only their little buddies, but other big buddies too. The information session is supported by the QLDC, Wanaka Library and Volunteering Central whose coordinator Gillian White will be present to give an insight into the bigger picture of volunteering in New Zealand and the region. It will take place at Wanaka Library on February 23, 5.45pm to 6.45pm.

Wanaka local Phoebe Young is excited about competing in the upcoming NZ Mountain Bike National Championships to be held at Cardrona Alpine Resort on February 25-26. Phoebe has recently returned from competing in the Australian XCO National Series held in Armidale NSW and Bairnsdale, Victoria. It was the first time she had competed overseas. She competed in four events, finishing third in three races. In the fourth race her crank failed resulting in her having only one pedal for the last 3km of the race. “It was not ideal, but it happens,” Phoebe said. Phoebe said she has always been into sport.
“I used to ski-race and I did some big mountain skiing. Then I got into triathlon. I did that for a while, but I stopped last year to focus on crosscountry riding,” she said. “I like the challenge, the adrenaline rush and the fear. Mountain bike riding is interesting and it always changes, so you can’t get bored,” Phoebe said. Phoebe started training with coach Patrick Harvey in 2016 and trains six days a week, focusing on biking, strength and conditioning. She will be competing in the under-19 category at the Nationals and her goal is to be selected for the team to compete at the World Championships to be held in Cairns, Australia in September. But first she needs to do well in the Nationals. “I always go into win, but as long as I do my best, I’ll be happy,” Phoebe said.

After connecting hospitals with private practices across Otago, hospitals across the South Island will soon be sharing relevant patient health information electronically for the entire South Island population. The Nelson Marlborough District Health Board (DHB) launched the clinical information portal, Health Connect South on Monday February 13, joining Southern, Canterbury, West Coast and South Canterbury DHBs, to connect all five South Island DHBs to the same shared electronic patient record for hospital care. Southern DHB chief medical officer, Dr Nigel Millar said, “The introduction of HealthOne has been a big step forward at Southern DHB and for the people in our community as it really enables greater integration of their health care. GPs, specialists and pharmacists can all see information

The Lake Hawea Family Fishing Competition was held last weekend with 225 entries. There were 175 fish presented for weigh in, the most fish that have been weighed in since 2007.

Frenchy brings fire to Kahu Youth role G

Claire French, or Frenchy as she likes to be known, is the new youth worker at Kahu Youth, and wants to share her passion for the circus with the youth of Wanaka. Frenchy is originally from Manchester in the UK. After completing an honours degree in community arts at Paul McCartney Performing Arts School in Liverpool she became interested in social work. “After university I became a young carers worker. I had contracts with children in care, care leavers and asylum seeking children, which was really challenging,” Frenchy said. Her career in hoopdance (hula hooping) began through her best friend. “We trained as hoopdance instructors. I worked as a youth worker at a radio station and did hoopdance on the side, but found I had so much festival and hoopdance work I had to choose between social work or circus work. I chose the circus. I travelled around the world performing and working at festivals including the UK Hoop Gathering Festival,” she said. Frenchy moved to New Zealand six years ago and landed in Dunedin, attending the Circulation Festival which she was invited to tour with. “I was on the road for a year and then moved up to Wellington. I went back to social work with the Welllink Trust, working with young people with mental health issues,” Frenchy said. “I was a circus and fire performer and social worker. My real passion is social circus, which is using circus as a vehicle for social change. One of the projects I worked on was a theatrical fire show with at-risk youth. It was amazing to see the young people who were the most challenging at the start were the ones who ended up self-policing the rest of the group by the end.”

Frenchy and her friend Emma Necus then set up The Community Arts and Circus Trust NZ which runs the Under The Spinfluence Circus Festival in Wellington. It attracts around 400 people from around the world and celebrated its sixth year last year. Frenchy also managed the Wellington Circus Trust for one-and-a-half years and during that time built her own tiny house. It was always in her plan to have a change and move to Wanaka and when her friend invited her to come down she applied for the position at Kahu Youth. “I had a Skype interview, moved my tiny house and here I am,” she said. Frenchy said Kahu Youth have been very welcoming and she has a lot of exciting circus projects in the pipeline. “Richard is great to work with and the community support has just been amazing. I’m really excited about the year ahead,” she said. Kahu Youth meet at “The Crib” at 11 Russell Street. Drop-in sessions are Fridays from 6pm to 10pm and Saturday from 3pm to 10pm. Spaces are also available in the girls Adventure Club. Frenchy is pictured performing with fire.

Hollywood star Reese Witherspoon has been out and about exploring Wanaka ahead of filming for Disney movie A Wrinkle In Time. Last week, The Wanaka Sun broke the news that scenes for the adventure fantasy movie would be filmed in Hawea’s Hunter Valley over the next couple of weeks starring Reese alongside Oprah Winfrey, Mindy Kaling and Zach Galifianakis. Mindy and Reese, who are believed to be staying in a private Wanaka residence during their time in the country, touched down in Queenstown on Sunday night (February 12).
While Oprah and Mindy have so far been keeping low profiles, Legally Blonde and Wild star Reese was spotted in several locations on Monday including Alchemy, Ritual, Racer’s Edge, Post Office Lane and Perriam, where the actress purchased a rose speckled jersey. Owner Christina Perriam said, “the gorgeous and ever so lovely Reese Witherspoon dropped in and indulged in some Perriam luxury. She’s so cool and we hope she loves our beautiful town as much as we do. We have spent a bit of time looking back over 2016 gathering information about the services provided. The following is just some of our 2016 year in numbers: Around 173 food parcels have been given out from the foodbank, and 75 Christmas hampers were given out to local families. The Wheels to Dunstan service, run by volunteer drivers, has transported around 600 patients to and from hospital appointments. We’ve assisted 14 families with subsidised counselling services, and supported another
14 with other costs. What do we have coming up? Throughout the month of March, we are fortunate to have some local businesses supporting us through a fun and tasty fundraiser. Francesca’s Italian Kitchen , Speights Ale House, Big Fig, Black Peak Gelato and Mediterranean Market have generously supported this fundraiser with some proceeds from one of their favourite dishes/food items going towards our Meals on Wheels and Companionship for Older People services. It is so heartwarming to see our community helping each other out. The team have been organising some
workshops for community organisations to help keep us on our toes. It’s easy postholiday to have the best of intentions, try and remain cool, calm and collected as we ease back into work mode, however suddenly find ourselves in a frantic frenzy. Our “Stress Resilience” workshop, run alongside the Otago Chamber of Commerce, will offer you tools to help manage stress and build personal resilience. The second workshop is on Communication for Manager and Leaders. This will help us understand different communication styles and non-verbal communication skills. QLDC Mayor Jim Boult focuses on the issues facing Wanaka and surrounds in our new monthly column.
A belated New Year to you all and I trust that despite our less than ideal weather you have had some time to enjoy the amazing part of the world we live in. On that score I had a call last Saturday from a reporter from the New Zealand Herald asking if there was much excitement in town because we have some film stars in our community at the present time. I replied that we were used to famous people coming here - they enjoy the area as much as we do and of course it’s great marketing having the area surrounding Wanaka front and centre in a feature film. Less ideal is the position we find ourselves in with “lake snow”. The quality of our lake water is of course an issue for the Otago Regional Council and while I have been critical of ORC in the past, they have undertaken to be proactive in finding the reason for the problem and doing something about it. Rest assured I will hold them to that undertaking. I know from general feedback from the Wanaka community that the cleaning of water filters is sometimes a daily job and is unacceptable. QLDC shares your concerns and your frustration. Unfortunately, if there is not a ready fix for the issue then it is likely that we will need to spend many millions of dollars on major filtration equipment. We will be watching ORC’s performance closely. One of the undertakings that I gave in my election campaign was to visit all of the communities in our district and listen to their concerns. I’m pleased to say that QLDC CEO Mike Theelen and I have now
visited all the smaller communities from Glenorchy to Makarora and taken on board their issues. I have asked QLDC staff to put additional effort into resolving many of the matters that affect these communities – and the interesting part is that many of them can be resolved with a moderately small spend. I have authorised that be done. You may be aware that Council recently approved a town centre study for Queenstown – the intent being to ensure that all the various plans which are being put forward in the past are co-ordinated and work carried out in a logical and time efficient manner. When that plan is complete I intend to ask Council officers to embark on a similar exercise for the Wanaka town centre. More of that as we progress. Likewise, Councillors are making some progress in working with ORC on public transport in the Wakatipu area and the lessons we are learning from that will be put to good use when the time comes to embark on a public transport investigation for Wanaka. Given recent traffic issues in Wanaka I suspect that is not too far in the future. Finally, the elected Councillors are undertaking an in depth study trip in and around Wanaka, planned for Monday April 3. This is particularly important for the non-Wanaka Councillors in gaining an understanding of the issues facing the community. I note also that this date coincides with the launch of the Festival of Colour so it’s a very appropriate day for us to be in Wanaka.

Current Challenge Wanaka champion Dougal Allan will face the race again this year, hoping to build on his success of 2016. Well known locally, Dougal, who is ranked the second fastest cyclist in the world over long distance triathlon, came top this time last year with a time of eight hours, 31 minutes and 53 seconds, nine minutes faster than second placed Maik Twelsiek from Germany. Although Dougal feels he is a better athlete than he was this time last year, he’s not letting any of the pressure that comes with being defending champion get to him. “Pressure is a privilege. It’s nice to think that people expect good things from you, that’s quite flattering,” Dougal said.
“I’m feeling ready and pretty relaxed at this stage in the game, but that probably won’t last. My approach last year worked for me and it won’t change this year.” Wanaka woman Simone Maier will be one for the locals to watch as she takes on a tough professional field for the 3.8km swim, 180km bike and 42.2km run on home soil. Another familiar face on the local athletic scene, New Zealand National Marathon Champion Oska Baynes, will be competing in the run section of the teams event. Wanaka Community Board member Quentin Smith was among the readers to comment on our Facebook page about the issue: Nikki I had no idea the council were about to limit our choice of swim lesson providers! I am with you Roger North, it is not a good idea and I see absolutely no benefit in it - don’t fix the bits that aren’t broken QLDC! Phoebe If providers of lessons are paying for the lanes and students are paying for entry why should ratepayers and attendees be denied a choice. There is room for everyone to learn to swim and train. Great letter. Ben Roger. Beautifully written mate and on point. Fingers crossed the ears that be listen.
Roger For all my long-winded rants, I am basically saying that elected officials need to get involved in operating policy right from the start before operations staff take over - in situations where the needs of stakeholders might not be met simply by providing a facility. Sometimes it is not enough to HOPE that it is run in a manner that meets their needs. Local elected officials understand the aspirations of the stakeholders better than non-local operations staff - some of whom are excellent but may have not considered the wider aspects of the situation.

Half marathon training diary - Week six D

Since arriving in Wanaka almost a year and a half ago, and particularly since taking up my job at the Wanaka Sun, I have always been amazed at how kind, generous and supportive people are within this community. I’ve spoken to and written about many a person in this region who do selfless and kind things for others, and this week I experienced it myself. A lovely lady and keen runner out in Hawea Flat gave my training a real shot in the arm in the form of some Hoka running shoes that she was giving away in an attempt to narrow her running shoe collection. Knowing little about proper running and the clothing and equipment that goes with it, I had no idea at the time just how decent these shoes are and how much they’re going to help. My knee was already starting to feel the effects of poor running shoes and just one run in the Hokas felt so much better, not only during the 8km run I took them out for the first time on, but also the day after. So massive thank you Rachel Shirley, I’ll be dropping a little something in your mailbox next time I’m in Hawea Flat to show my appreciation. Aside from better shoes, I’ve also been learning new training techniques with my boxfit coach Joe Waide. I spent a sunny Thursday morning on Pembroke Park with him learning strength exercises. My first run up Mt Iron on Thursday evening went as expected - a bit of a disaster. I attempted around 60 percent of the steep bits, but not without THE WANAKA SUN

a lot of stopping. My friend Karl, who conquered the whole thing running without stopping last week, has advised I walk up once a day for a week before trying to run it again. One last tip if you’re training and didn’t know already - take magnesium at night; it’s a wonder for helping muscle recovery and preventing those horrible cramps. Until next week, Danielle. Local snowboarder Zoi Sadowski Synnott won a bronze medal in Big Air in Quebec, Canada on February 12, just a week after her fourth place finish in snowboard slopestyle at the World Cup at Mammoth Mountain, USA. Competing in her first season on the FIS World Cup Tour, the 15-yearold placed fifth from 28 female competitors in the qualifying heats to make the finals. Riders had three runs to put down their best trick on the purpose-built ramp in downtown Quebec City with the combined total of the best two runs counting for the overall ranking. Zoi made a strong start, scoring 78.25 points on her first run with a double
wildcat trick and 67.25 points in her second with a frontside 720 mute and 72.75 points on her third run with the same trick. “I was completely ecstatic,” Zoi said. “I’d landed both of my runs so I already had my score on the board and a chance to improve on my third run.” Austria’s Anna Gasser secured the win, with Julia Marino (USA) finishing in second place. Cardrona NZ Park & Pipe Team mate Tiarn Collins was also in action, putting down a personal best result in the Snowboard Big Air final to finish in seventh place. He landed a backside 1260 melon on his first run and a cab double cork 1260 on his second run and for his first time in competition.

With just under one year to go until the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, Wanaka’s athletes are among the country’s top snow and ice athletes competing for a place in the New Zealand team. Freeskier Jossi Wells, one of the most experienced among the potential team, is said to be progressing well towards selection, with his 11th place at the Freeski Slopestyle World Cup in Calgary on February 9 earning him a spot in the finals. Jossi, who secured a bronze medal at the PyeongChang venue at the same time last year, said that after a year out he felt prepared for what was ahead. “It was great to go and check out where the Olympic Games will be held and get acclimatised to the place,” Jossi said. “It’s knuckle down time. We are out trying to get New Zealand quota spots. My body is going well and I am feeling really healthy which puts confidence on my side going into a big qualifying series.” Meanwhile, the freeskier’s Olympian brother Byron is currently competing in his freeski halfpipe

test event, while Beau James Wells sits out on an injury break. Jackson, the youngest of the freeskiing Wells brothers, came sixth behind Finn Bilous, pictured, at Calgary’s Freeski Slopestyle World Cup with neither athlete qualifying for the finals. A final team of around 15 to 20 athletes will compete in the games, held on the Korean Peninsula, from February 9 to 25, 2018.

Two-time Olympic medallist Nick Willis is currently training on the trails of Wanaka, racking up 98 miles in his first week. The Lower Hutt-born middle distance runner, who now lives in Michigan with his wife and son, arrived in the town at the end of January and is due to leave again at the end of this month. Nick, pictured, told The Wanaka
Sun that he is here undertaking base building for the northern hemisphere season alongside three American athletes, two Japanese athletes and fellow New Zealand middle distance athlete Hamish Carson. “I’m just using the great trails and views in the area to enjoy my base building,” Nick said. Nick will take part in the 5000m at the Auckland Track Classic on February 26 alongside Hamish, who confirmed a coaching partnership between the pair earlier this month.

Disc golf in Wanaka has grown, with a second course added at Eely Point in addition to the existing 18 hole Lismore Park course. Nine baskets have been installed around Eely Point, starting above the Scout Den, with Disc Golf Wanaka playing its first casual competition there last Sunday (February 12). Disc Golf Wanaka chairperson Martin Galley said that although people have been playing an 18-hole version of the course for the past ten years, the club wanted to get an official course made. “Over the past couple of years we’ve tried to come up with a variation on the course that doesn’t interfere with other groups, roads or car parks,” Martin said. “I’m very excited to get the course in and looking forward to seeing everybody have a go.” Within the next three to six months scorecards – known by riders as “Smoothy’s Garden” in honour of New Zealand skier Sam Smoothy’s 2015 groundbreaking run. The 500 vertical metre venue offered a multitude of line options, from powerful straight lines to technical cliff sections. Tumultuous weather over the past week deposited fresh snow in the Pyrenees, with brilliant blue skies finally making an appearance for competition day and offering optimal riding conditions for competitors.

Wanaka skier Sam Lee has competed in his first ever Freeride World Tour competition late last week, finishing eighth in the event staged in VallnordArcalis, Andorra. “I’m stoked,” Sam said. “Top ten was my aim for the first comp and I’m super happy that it worked out.” Competition took place on the feature-dense Serra de Balma venue
