ougal Allan took the Challenge Wanaka title for the second year running, smashing the previous record. The long distance athlete broke the long-standing course record with a time of 8:26:38, beating Richard Ussher’s 2010 time by nearly nine minutes. Dougal, pictured, also went on to beat his own bike course record, which was 4:36:06 last year, completing the cycling leg in 4:27:37. “There’s no race for me that compares; it’s the biggest race of the year for me and the one that means the most,” Dougal said. “It’s the one day of the year that you hope you’re gonna get it right. It’s massively satisfying given how much I have put in.” The athlete added that different weather and track conditions meant that each year was almost like running a completely different race. “The conditions and the tough course make it all the more satisfying. I had a bit of a race plan that I hoped would be effective on race day but you never really know if you’ve made the right call,” Dougal said. Dutchwoman Yvonne van Vlerken was victorious in the women’s pro field with a time 9:15:44, also

ill there be multiple swimming lesson providers at the new Wanaka pool? This issue was discussed in the public forum at the Wanaka Community Board meeting on Thursday February 16. Local resident Roger North addressed the WCB, raising concerns about suggestions by the Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) the new pool would have one swimming school provider. Currently there are two at the existing pool on Plantation Road. He asked them whether the WCB were empowered to act on operational aspects of the pool and make a decision about swimming school providers.

“They assured me that they had that authority. Rachel said she was already aware of and willing to champion the issue and make sure the community board has the final say. We can’t really ask for much more than that,” Roger said. WCB chairperson Rachel Brown said the board had been involved in this conversation ever since the council committed to building a new pool. “I facilitated a few meetings of user groups and council staff and the topic of swim school provision was part of the mix. I always made it clear that all swimming pool decisions need to be made in the best interests of the

Wanaka Ward, and therefore through the Wanaka Community Board,” Rachel said. She said when QLDC resolved Alpine Aqualand in Frankton would change to a sole provider swim school model, the WCB made it clear to council management that this was not a good enough reason to change things in Wanaka. “A separate decision needs to be made here, taking into account all relevant factors. My job is to make sure the correct process is followed, with any decision to be made by council first coming to the WCB. The Wanaka swimming pool is funded by Wanaka

The QLDC is currently looking into operational options for the new pool, including swim school provision. There will be a committee meeting this week where operational information will be presented. This discussion will then come back to a Wanaka Community Board workshop. “I am committed to making sure we can make the best decision for Wanaka and its ratepayers and residents. I have spoken with many people about this issue and am always happy to hear from more, especially if you have strong views about how things could be improved from what they are, or what you think works really well now,” Rachel said. Pest pellets dropped D

DANIELLE BUTLER

newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz

The aerial application of poison cereal baits in Makarora Valley will begin today, Thursday February 23 and continue into tomorrow. The Department of Conservation (DOC) is dropping the pellets containing Sodium Fluoroacetate (1080) in the Makarora and Wilkin valleys as part of its pest control programme, Battle for our Birds. Central Otago senior ranger Annette Grieve said that access to the Blue Pools track and Cameron Flat link track to the Blue Pools carpark will be temporarily restricted and manned by DOC staff while the helicopters are operating. “The toxic laced pellets, approximately the weight of a $2 coin, dropped from height do present a potential hazard to people on the ground, however, this operation comprises of a light sowing rate of approximately 1kg per hectare,” Annette said.

“It is recommended that people do not enter the treatment area until the tracks are cleared. Once the pellet drop in the section has been completed and cleared, the track will be re-open to the public.” The operation began last Thursday, February 16, with the dropping of non-toxic cereal pellets across 38,200ha. DOC Central Otago operations manager Mike Tubbs said that the work was aimed at safeguarding populations of threatened native birds by reducing rodent, stoat and possum numbers. “High stoat numbers means more predation of our native birds, which is a real concern. Pest control now will knock down stoat numbers and minimise this threat,” Mike said. Makarora is the last South Island site to be completed in the programme and is among 894,412ha across 29 sites, most of which were completed last year. The Matukituki Valley was one of three sites where the operation was cancelled.

Rabbit shooting to take place Rabbit shooting is to take place over two nights in Hawea next week in a population control attempt. Contact Energy Ltd environmental advisor Daniel Druce said that night shooting would be carried out by Dunstan Contracting from Mon-

day February 27 to Friday March 3. During this period, there will be one night of shooting at Hawea Dam and one night at Gladstone Gap. Signs will be placed at gateways to inform members of the public.

Lake Hawea resident Trevor Chinn was awarded the Richardson Medal by the Institute Glaciological Society at the international symposium held by the Society in Wellington from February 12-17. The medal was awarded to Trevor for a lifetime of service to New Zealand’s glaciological science and for sustained contributions to research of snow and ice in New Zealand and Antarctica. IGS president Professor Douglas McAyeal said “Trevor is an original, intuitive scientist who leaves a lasting, positive impression on everyone who meets him. He is widely renowned for being the “stalwart of NZ glaciology” for 50 years who initiated and maintained close study of the mass balance of New Zealand’s many glaciers. This data, as well as his early glacier inventory for New

Zealand, continue to be a resource for international researchers investigating the global-scale response of mountain glaciers to climate change.” Douglas said Trevor’s research into New Zealand snow line elevation has led to a rich observational record that enriches New Zealand’s understanding of its environment, particularly given its reliance on alpine snow and glacier ice for hydroelectric resources. “Trevor Chinn is ‘New Zealand’s national treasure’ when it comes to glaciology. He was its premier care-taker in the early days, and is an energetic inspiration to the many youthful New Zealand glaciologists who are entering the community today. We honour Trevor Chinn for his enduring service to the practice and understanding of New Zealand glaciology and its community,” Douglas said. Students who sat NCEA exams last year have celebrated their results in an assembly held by Mount Aspiring College principal Wayne Bosley last week. Although results were released last month, the academic assembly on Thursday February 16 was held by the college to officially acknowledge and celebrate MAC’s success. “I said at the assembly that staff and students have every right to feel very proud of these results. As principal I am very proud of all of them,” Wayne said. The percentage of level three students headed to university is 76.9 percent compared with last year’s

83 percent. This figure reflects a nationwide university entrance drop of 0.7 percent, as revealed in provisional roll-based data. While MAC’s figures for level three achievement were slightly down from last year (52.6 percent compared to last year’s 54.4 percent), the merit and excellence endorsements were up 1.6 percent and 0.2 percent respectively. Level one and two results were generally up on last year, with this year’s 5.5 percent increase in level two achievements reflective of a national rise, as shown in provisional data. “The students and staff are working together and challenging each other to strive for personal excellence,” Wayne said.

Jet boats aid SAR in river rescues Wanaka SAR was assisted in two rescues by local jet boat companies over the weekend. In the first incident, Wanaka SAR, ambulance and police were called to an accident on the Matukituki River approximately 500m from the Matukituki Bridge at around 1.30pm on Sunday February 19. A jet boat had steering problems and collided with a bank causing an occupant to be ejected from the

boat and another receiving minor injuries. Police said local operator Wanaka River Journeys was nearby. They raised the alarm and managed to pull the injured party out of the water and ferry both to ambulance staff. A second incident occurred on the Clutha River were some kayakers got into trouble after losing their paddles and getting stuck on the river bed beside a steep bank. Wanaka SAR utilised the services of Go Jet to locate and assist the party back to safer ground.

Wanaka community collaboration incubator LINK Upper Clutha launched its ‘3 Questions’ campaign on Tuesday to find out what people love about Wanaka and how to preserve it in the face of growth. The three questions are: What do you love about your community? How could it be even better? How could you help? LINK facilitator Kathy Dedo explains, “As Wanaka grows, we often hear that people don’t want it to change. The survey asks specifically what locals and visitors love about Wanaka – identifying strengths we can build on. And by uncovering people’s skills, talents, and gifts we will learn more about the amazing people of this place and what they can offer.” “The ‘3 Questions’ survey is an effort to make sure every person who wants to give their ideas has the chance. The survey results will help prioritise the community-led projects to support.” The survey can be found online at LINK’s new website, on paper in the Queenstown Lakes District Council’s Scuttlebutt publication, and in person as the LINK team will be out and about asking the survey face to face. The survey closes on March 6 and LINK will make the data collected publicly available. The findings will direct LINK’s strategy for community-led projects, and provide context for local authorities in their decision-making. LINK Steering Group acting chair and Wanaka Community Board member Ruth Harrison said,

The safety of children crossing the road on Kings Drive near the Wanaka Primary School will be increased with the installation of a new kea crossing. Wanaka Primary School principal Dr Wendy Bamford approached Wanaka Community Board member Quentin Smith at the end of term four last year with her concerns, suggesting a kea crossing would assist with the flow of traffic and safety of students both before and after school. “I have been pushing to have this done. It was good to identify a need within the school and work with the community board and council. We were able to prioritise the project in the minor works program and make this happen quickly. It was relatively easy to prioritise children’s safety on the work’s schedule,” Quentin said. They will be dealing with adults and other students wanting to cross, so they will have to learn to be assertive. It will take a bit of time for the public to get used to it, but hopefully it will mean a smoother and safer movement of traffic on the road. It takes quite a commitment from the students and the school to be here whether it is hot, cold, windy or raining. The crossing has to be run every day the school is open, no matter what the conditions,” Constable Vink said. Dr Bamford was pleased to see the crossing installed quickly. “It is quite a dangerous area. Thank you to the community board for getting it done quickly and getting all the equipment in place,” she said. There have been 18 students and five adult volunteers trained to man the crossing. Hamish and his team have offered locals exclusive bonus features available on its website, such as longer video and priority help for grandparents, as a way of saying thank you to the Wanaka community’s support. “We are grateful for the patience of Wanaka locals who started using the app back in the early days and have stayed loyal while the kin2kin experience is being constantly refined and improved,” Hamish said.

A monthly column by Kim Reilly, Federated Farmers South Island regional policy manager, on issues affecting the Upper Clutha’s rural community…

Act now to continue to go with the flow The way we’ve accessed water, right back from gold mining days, has flowed down the ages to deliver repercussions – and a deadline – to today’s land owners. Water is and always will be a key part of Central Otago’s farming, viticulture and horticulture operations, just as it has been through the decades. If we look back over the last hundred years we’d find that water was also critical to the gold mining enterprises that our region’s townships and communities founded from. In fact, many current irrigation users still rely on the races, dams and channels those pioneering miners etched into the landscape. Back in the late 1800s, rights to use that water came from the Mining Act. But these “mining rights” were subsequently and legitimately used for irrigating grasslands after the gold mining boom passed. This use was key to retaining a thriving Central Otago community and economy. In 1991, under the Resource Management Act (RMA), it was acknowledged that landowners needed an appropriate time frame to work through the complicated transfer from mining rights to RMA water permits. As a result, these rights were deemed to be water permits (“deemed permits”) to enable the continued taking of water for a final period of up to 30 years. All of these deemed permits, based on mining rights, expire on October 1, 2021. What is of concern is that there are still around 400 Otago irrigators needing to apply for a new water permit before 2021, and anyone who wishes to continue taking water

after that time must apply to Otago Regional Council for a permit to do so well before that time period ends. This deemed permit conversion process is far from straight-forward. The amount of time it takes to navigate through the process varies considerably. It will depend on a range of factors including farm location, complexity of waterway, what values it holds, who else needs water, whether a water group can be set up and what irrigation infrastructure changes may be needed. There are also considerable complications with Otago Regional Council (ORC) considering minimum flow and residual flow plan changes during the same period. Plus it is unlikely that the level of involvement from others into the process would have been foreseen in 1991. However, landowners are not alone. There are both practical and economic benefits in working with neighbours to set up a Water Management Group. There are also numerous experienced consultants working in this area who can guide landowners through the application process. While October 2021 might seem a long time away, these processes can take years, and every day is needed. Any landowners who think they may be affected need to get in touch with ORC on 0800 474 082, through email to public.enquiries@orc.govt. nz or by visiting a council office in Dunedin or Alexandra. Reliable and secure water supply is key to both the future of farming and our region’s communities. It also can exist in harmony with good sustainable environmental outcomes.

Singers and would-be singers are encouraged to take part in a weekend of singing on Saturday and Sunday, March 4 and 5, at the Luggate Hall. Led by Claire Stevens, director of Dunedin gospel and world music group ‘Sunny Side Up’, this event follows two successful workshops at Luggate in 2016, each of which attracted over 40 singers. The workshop is open to anyone, with a focus on enjoying singing a range of songs in harmony in an informal setting. Singers can attend for one day or both. There is no audition and singers of any level of experience are welcome. Organiser Kirsty Barr said, “Some people come having done little or no singing and it’s great to

see them quickly realise how much fun this can be. Being surrounded by others who love to sing along with the outstanding acoustics of the Luggate Hall make this a great experience – and it’s why we keep coming back.” This time the workshop will end with a short public performance at the hall. “It’s amazing how quickly we learn songs under Claire’s guidance and get to the point of performing. We are looking forward to bringing the sound of a larger group to the Luggate community to showcase the acoustics of this lovely hall,” Kirsty said. The Saturday session runs from 10.30am until 4pm. The Sunday session from 10am – 1pm will be followed by a short public performance at 1.30pm (gold coin donation for those attending the performance).

Albert Town lagoon still off limits G

GLENDA TURNBULL

Results of the toxicity testing of the algal bloom in the Albert Town lagoon have now been received by the Otago Regional Council (ORC). ORC resource science manager Dr Dean Olsen said testing was done for the possible presence of seven toxins the bloom could potentially produce and these were all negative. “While this is good news, the health warnings

currently in force for the lagoon still remain. This is because while there is no apparent toxicity now, the bloom could still start producing toxins at any time. “Furthermore, even in the absence of toxins we reiterate that the high levels of cyanobacteria which are still present can still cause severe skin irritation and respiratory reactions in some people. Therefore, until the bloom subsides, people and animals should avoid contact with the lagoon,” he said.

IT scholarship for female student D

An Otago Information Technology student has become the first recipient of her polytechnic’s Women in IT scholarship. Otago Polytechnic’s inaugural scholarship was awarded to Isabel Ryan, who plans to graduate with her Bachelor of Information Technology in 2019 and start her own business, because of her selfleadership skills and motivation. The scholarship is worth $1000 for every year of Isabel’s study, which she says will help with her student loan.

More importantly, Isabel is pleased that the scholarship recognises that women are underrepresented in the IT industry. “It’s something I’ve given a lot of thought to, so it’s great to know that the place I’m studying also acknowledges it. I studied at Otago Girls’ High School, so coming from that into an environment where women are supported is really important to me” she said. Director of communications Mike Waddell said, “Otago Polytechnic values our responsibility in society. If we can support women into underrepresented areas of study, it’s better for the community as a whole.”

Kai Whaka Pai takes on Godzone D

DANIELLE BUTLER

newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz

More than 300 people are making final preparations for the start of this year’s Godzone, of which four will be representing Wanaka in the name of waterfront cafe Kai Whaka Pai. Shonagh North, Vicky Sandford, Julian Holmes and Mark Cockroft, pictured, have been training together in trekking, mountain biking, kayaking and rafting ahead of the seven-day expedition-style adventure race. Shonagh and Mark competed together in a different team of four at last year’s Godzone in the Tasman district, but decided to form a more localbased team for Chapter Six of the competition in Queenstown. “This year we came together to form more of a local crew so that we could train together easily, and that is where the Kai team came from,” Shonagh said. Shonagh, whose team ranked on the short course of the expedition last year, said that the Kai Whaka Pai team’s main aim this year was to achieve a full course ranking. “I learnt from last year what we were short on and we’ve been out and about to places we wouldn’t normally trek, with the full gear reading maps,”

Shonagh said. “Our training sessions are long and hard and about endurance training. We’ve done as much as we can do and given it a good crack. We’re just going to be really positive as to us it is something we really feel that we deserve.” All the team know so far is that they are to meet at an undisclosed location in Queenstown at 6.30am on Saturday 25 February. They will then be given maps and need to work out their own route to the

If you spot a convoy of clapped out cars cruising into Hawea on Monday February 27, don’t be distressed, it will just be the participants in this year’s Sh*tbox Rally New Zealand. Hawea is a pitstop for the seven day event that will start and finish in Christchurch. It is the second adventure in New Zealand, raising funds for cancer research and awareness on behalf of the Cancer Society of New Zealand. Like its Australian counterpart, the rally is not a race but rather a challenge to achieve the unthinkable: to drive cars worth less than $1,700 including registration and insurance through sprawling farmlands, geothermal wonders, ancient redwood forests, glacial valleys, impeding mountains and cosmopolitan cities. In 2017 the rally is exploring the South Island having conquered the North Island in 2016. Manheim sources all of the vehicles used in the rally on behalf of the teams, who bid on them in an event the day before the rally starts. To qualify for the rally supporters need to raise a minimum of $4500. The 150 participants have raised over NZ$61,000 and AU$249,024 already.

The Informant Recently I attended a promotional get together hosted by one of the local banks for clients and professionals in the community. These types of gatherings are a great opportunity to meet a variety of people and have a casual chat all mixed in with a bit of “sales and promotional rap from your host”. I affectionately call them “Sausage Roll runs”. I managed to meet a very interesting lady who had obviously been successful in business and we got chatting about investment strategies and her thoughts on this. She very much held a long term view on investing and very rarely sold anything. Our conversation lead me to thinking about the common theme I have observed over the years with clients that have had success with their investing timelines. Typically these are clients that have operated a successful business so have established a founda-

Clubs urged to nominate S

STAFF REPORTER

Nominations for the 2016 sporting year are open for the House of Travel Central Otago Sports Awards. Awards coordinator Bill Godsall, pictured, would like to see more local sports clubs nominate their teams, as the teams’ category often struggled to get nominations. “It could be the local rugby team or netball team which has won its local competition.” He said while there were a lot of elite athletes in the region, it was important clubs and individuals got their nominations in, regardless of whether they thought the athlete was good enough. He said the awards were also a great way of acknowledging the achievements of the region’s local sportspeople, coaches and adminis-

trators, as well as showcasing some of the minority sports which were often overshadowed by the bigger sports. The judging panel will choose the top five sports people in each of the categories – senior sportsman and sportswoman, junior sportsman and woman, team and coach – which will then go forward to be judged in their respective category. The winner of each category will then vie for the supreme award. Anyone can nominate a sportsperson. “Many athletes are too humble to nominate themselves, so it’s really important someone supports them by nominating them,” Bill said. Nominations close on Friday, March 10 and nomination forms are available by contacting Bill Godsall on (03) 445 1142 or bgodsall@sportotago.co.nz.

tion of steady cash-flows exiting their business. This has allowed them to turn to investing outside of the business or building their existing business to a greater scale. One of the largest advantages from a longer time horizon is it allows for gains to be tax free. Those who take views that are based on short term time-lines generally pay tax on profits. For example share traders, property developers, sellers of residential property within two years of purchase that are caught by the “Bright-line test”, generally make all of these different gains taxable. On the converse side accumulate shares to gain dividend income, property to generate rental income or businesses to make business income then any gains from these asset sales will be tax free. Here is a real life example I have come across with a commercial property investment made in a Southern provincial town that was

purchased back in 1998. At the time of purchase the cost price of the property was $223,000 and the rental income was $25,000 per annum. This is a return of 11.2% which is comparatively higher than today’s returns but understandable given interest rates were a lot higher back then. Since this time there was an extra $210,000 spent on an extension to the building back in 2010 which allowed for an increase in the annual rental to $45,000. Presently the rental income is $65,500 per annum. Looking at the return solely based on the investment in historic dollar terms the property is returning 15% pa. As regards to present day value the cap rate return on the rental would value the building at around 7.5% making the property worth $866,000. When you analyse the return of this investment if the owner was to sell it today the $433,000 capital gain would be a tax free gain. This calculates to an additional 3.5% return

Hundreds of people will descend on Wanaka’s Golf Club next week to play three full days of the sport in aid of a local cause. Sponsored and organised by Hirepool, the annual event will this year start on Friday March 3, coming to an end on Sunday March 5. Organising committee member Phil Thirkell said that more than 200 people would tee off at around 7.30am on Friday, playing different compounding on an annual basis for each year over the 20 years. Overall you could assess the return on this investment at 18.5% pa when you include any gain in the value of the building together with the cash rental returns banked over the past 20 years. Therefore it is easy to understand why someone who owns this building would not part with it. Where else is it possible to gain such a good return on your money these days? People are searching high and low for returns such as this. Talking to these investors they did tell me that the key point in making the decision to buy was at the time the building didn’t appear to be a bargain. What has made it a good investment is its location and the fact they have stuck with it. Helped by inflation lifting the rental income every two years has increased the value of the building. Overall the long term strategy seems to be the winning formula.

golf formats through until Sunday in teams of four. The competition will conclude with presentations and an auction on Sunday afternoon. “This year all the proceeds will go to St John to purchase a new ambulance defibrillator,” Phil said. “We try not to have a figure in mind, we try to go very much based on what has been raised in the past, which was around $5000 last year from the golf itself. It can get up into the double figures though, and any donation is a very worthwhile one,” Phil said.

This year’s budding business students have kicked off 2017 bouncing ideas off local business owners and getting valuable advice. Fifty entrepreneurial Mount Aspiring College students gathered on Monday February 20 as part of the YES Enterprise Day, coordinated by the Southland Chamber of Commerce. Business and enterprise teacher Roy Gawn said that the year 13 students, who are tasked with setting up and marketing their own businesses over the school year, were really enthusiastic and came up with some good ideas. “They did good and it was good for them to talk through their initial ideas with local businesses who gave them feedback and were there mentoring them,” Roy said. Business students launch their own businesses each year under the Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme. Head of YES, which is managed by the Young Enterprise Trust, Leah MacDonell said that the community, government and business support was amazing. “The ideation part is crucial as the student-led teams learn the process of starting a business, researching their respective industry, developing the product and launching their idea into the market," Leah said.

Doctor Compost

It’s easy picking the fruits of your successes at this time of year, or even the next door’s famous apricot tree dripping with goodness. I had a wee lapse of motivation to discover my tunnel house had gone mental. The cucumbers had turned to the dark side and gone triffid on me, my quest for a plastic free environment was failing as my natural twine severed under the weight of tomato success and where did all that lemon balm seed come from? I now have a forest of lemon balm plants striving for world domination. It’s not just this time of year motivation needs to be encouraged, it’s all year round. That is easier said than done when your beans and zucchinis get frosted on January 3, as happened to some friends of mine at Lake Hawea. What happened to our summer? Successes or failures in the garden, we have to keep ourselves motivated through what I call the the “summer slump”, when it’s more exciting supping at the lake or floating down the river. Yet this is a time when the garden booty needs picking and storing, when weeds can get a grip if left unchecked, and your autumn winter garden can look a little stark if you don’t keep planting. Every time a vege bed or a space comes free, buy a pack of seedlings and get them

in the ground. With a skiff of compost, they’ll be away. Last autumn was a beauty with very few frosts, warm days, it definitely presented an amazing, long growing season full of opportunities in the vege garden. So when is the best time to plant? Today is always the right time to plant and next week and the week after. We’ve got such a topsy-turvy climate that waiting for the ideal moment can feel like a lottery. I use a moon calendar to help me with my planting decisions, but sometimes the right time to plant some seeds or seedlings is right now, or any time you get a burst of motivation. The secret is to not give up after any failures. Keep persevering. You just can’t beat eating a fresh apple off the tree or a tasty carrot straight out of the ground. Top motivation tips. The power of ‘spotify’ and podcasts. Music in the garden is a great way to lift those tired bones into action. Otherwise how about a podcast? Some of my favourites at the moment are The Kiwimana Buzz, Radio 4’s Gardeners Question time, RNZ: This Way Up and 2 Dope Queens. Gardening buddies. Having gardening friends rocks. Catch up once a week in each others garden. Swap ideas, get motivated by what they’re doing. I’m lucky I get to talk gardening all the time, this is such great inspiration and motivation. Keep a diary, so you can look back on what worked last year. I struggle with this one, but when I do write my one entry for

Susie Hewson has always had a big passion for all animals, especially dogs, with more than ten years of training and experience in the dog grooming industry. It’s Susie’s experience, professionalism, passion, creativity and sensitivity that make her business Wanaklean Dog the go-to place for your pooch’s grooming needs. Wanaklean Dog was established as the area’s first residential dog groomer from Susie’s Lake Hawea home in 2006. After five years, Susie, pictured, sold the business moving to Australia with husband Trevor, before returning last year. “I sold my business to Emily Cane who set up in Hedditch Street, also grooming from home,” Susie said. “When I returned to Lake Hawea in 2016 I was more than delighted to buy my business back as Emily was looking for a new challenge. Business is booming and no dog is too big or small.” Pop in to see Susie at 13 Frederick Street or call her on 027 511 0282. ADVERTORIAL

Half marathon training diary - Week seven D

DANIELLE BUTLER

newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz

I’ve fallen off the wagon a tad this week following a few days up in Wellington. I knew I’d largely have to write my training off while I was away, putting in extra time on runs last week and extra sessions at bootcamp this week to make up for the lost time. What I didn’t realise was how hard it would be to stay healthy on the eating front. While I expected to indulge perhaps a couple of times over the weekend, what actually happened was that I managed to stay relatively healthy on the first day while I was lucky to see a piece of fruit in the two days after that. With good intentions, I ordered a healthy muesli with fruit on the first morning, at the expense of being mocked by the guy at the cafe. In his opinion, if you’re going to eat something boring you should just have it at home for cheaper. Fair point I guess, although the muesli ended up being delicious and not boring at all. Feeling sluggish and unmotivated after a heavy

and tiring weekend, rather than embark on a long and treacherous run straight away I decided to do a bit of cross training in a cold and choppy Lake Hawea on Sunday evening. Although more splashing around was done than actual exercise with my friend and her two kids, we had fun and it definitely blew away the cobwebs and freshened me up for the week ahead. Now that I’m back in Wanaka, I’m on the hunt for a foam roller (now that I’ve been shown how to use one) after still suffering with pretty bad cramps around my calves and the side of my legs. Foam rolling has been recommended to me by both my bootcamp teacher Tawna and my boxfit teacher Joe. Apparently it works as a self massage which helps prevent sore muscles and injury by getting rid of adhesions in your muscles and connective tissue, basically getting deeper than a standard stretch. I’m hoping to get my hands on one this week, so I’ll let you know how it goes. See you next time, Danielle.

Giveaway: Circus like you have never seen Zirka Circus is in Wanaka this weekend with its new show. Its state of the art big top sets the scene, while sound and lighting, costumes and effects add to the spectacular world-class staging of performing arts, theatre and show-time. The completely new two-hour show - Cross the Ocean - is suitable for all ages from two to 102. It features the Incredible Double Chinese poles, a Balancing Ballerina and the Human Frog Contortionists jumping through tin cans, plus many more acts. Zirka Circus has teamed up with the Wanaka Sun to offer our readers the chance to win the “Full Monty” prize of one family pass to the show with free popcorn or fairy floss for the opening night show on Friday February 24. Zirka say one of the lucky team might get to perform live in the show, “this is truly an exclusive that money can’t buy, and only available to Wanaka Sun readers”.

My apologies for the absence of a diary last week. My fault, I confused the date that colleagues at the University of Otago were to write it. Harking back on my last diary, I noted that I was not holding my breath on the outcomes of nests 13 and 15. Both had been abandoned over the previous weeks and sure enough, checking both nests the following day revealed that they had abandoned. I collected the eggs and we have checked them with Jack and his younger brother Matt. It was Matt’s turn to practice measuring and weighing eggs and he did very well when it came to drilling those little holes from which we expel the contents of the eggs. And of course, if the egg is fertile, embryos will not pass through them. So we open those eggs with a fine pair of scissors. Only egg one was fertile and it contained an embryo. My guess

was that it was about two and a half weeks developed and that would be based on when it was noted that the nest was first abandoned. It would have most likely died the day following parental desertion. Feathers were evident, tiny feet were beautifully formed, the egg tooth quickly noted by Jack and the remains of the yolk sac were still attached to the umbilicus. The whole weighed some 25 grams and that I suspect is close to the weight of the chick when it hatches from the egg. I never cease to be both amazed and impressed with the exquisite packaging that goes on in an egg once fertilised. The above image was taken some 61 years ago of an abandoned and frozen egg of the South Polar Skua at Cape Bird Antarctica. Being frozen, it stayed “intact” when I opened it. See what I mean! Wanaka skier Sam Lee claimed a fourth place finish at the second stop of the Freeride World Tour in Andorra last week. The result follows an eighth place finish at the competition opener staged at the same ski area in the Pyrenees two weeks ago. Fifty of the world’s best skiers and snowboarders competed in the event that was rescheduled due to snow safety concerns in the French Alps.

Conditions were challenging for both riders and organisers. Fresh snowfall and changeable weather resulted in a slight crust forming on the snow surface, making turning conditions variable in some parts of the venue. “I’m mega happy to come away with fourth place at the second stop of the Tour,” Sam said. “I was extra nervous before the start today, so I’m double happy that it worked out.” Sam is currently ranked seventh and must be in the top 12 to qualify to compete in the final two events in Alaska and Switzerland.

The smooth running of Challenge Wanaka is made possible with the help of around 600 volunteers who give up their time to be part of this iconic Wanaka event. Challenge Wanaka volunteer co-ordinator Jo Guest said it would be impossible to run the event without them. “Everyone pitches in and does their little bit. We couldn’t run the event without them. They all do an amazing job,” Jo said. This year there were around 70 Mount Aspiring College (MAC) students pitching in to help. Of those, 42 were from the Students in the Community Programme run by the school. Year 10 MAC students Emma Smith, Estelle Norman, Annabel Carter and Billea-Nova ChinAlyika volunteered on the day, having an early start of 6.30am. “It was pretty busy all day. We worked at transition. We love being a part of it. We’ve all done it before and we had so much fun last year, we decided to do again,” Emma said. Jo said returning volunteers are common. “This year we had about 350 returning volunteers. They tell me they love meeting the people. Some volunteers have been here for every single event. It is a really nice connection that everyone has,” Jo said. Jo said they had lots of people signing up during lead up week and on the day. “That was great as we always need more. The

weather for this year’s event was stunning, so that may have helped with volunteer numbers as well,” she said. Volunteers start a week before the event setting up the finish line area, transitions and tents for the event. Then there are those that help on the day including road marshals, aid station workers, transition attendants, mountain bike riders, kayakers, pack in and pack up helpers and people assisting with administration. Jo said it can be a tough day out there for the volunteers managing the motorists, some receiving verbal abuse and some physical threats. “Hearing about this is the worst part of my job. We realise that we need to seriously look at our traffic management plan as Wanaka, in the past 12 months alone, has become so much busier with tourists and residents alike. We realise the inconvenience the race causes, but I ask that the public be understanding as it is not the fault of the volunteer who is trying to keep athletes, volunteers, public and motorists themselves safe.” Jo said the emails she gets from volunteers thanking her for the positive experience that they have helps. “Their response lets us know we are doing the right thing. One email said, ‘On behalf of our crew of volunteers - thank you! The experience of volunteering is enriching for us and role models to our kids how valuable giving of your time is. We walk away feeling energised and connected with a deep level of happiness. With much warmth and deep thanks.’”

Dougal takes second Challenge Continued from page 1 Jamie’s wife and Amanda’s sister Chelsea Norman, who had never run a half marathon distance before, was asked to fill in with just a few days notice. “I’ve done a bit of running but I’d never ran that far before in my life and I didn’t know if I’d have it in me,” Chelsea said. “I thought about it for a few hours and decided that I would do it for my sister. She was devastated that she

couldn’t run so I thought I would give it a crack and do it for the family.” Chelsea’s family including her dad, daughter and sister on crutches joined her along the side of the track to support and keep her going. “They really inspired me to keep going. The last 3km were a real challenge but I actually really enjoyed it and surprised myself. It was a great experience and it goes to show you never know what you can achieve,” Chelsea said.
