n his first outing at the ironman distance, Wanaka’s Braden Currie repelled a late charge from reigning champion Cameron Brown to win the Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain Ironman New Zealand title in Taupo last weekend. An elated Braden became the fourth Kiwi male to win the prestigious Ironman New Zealand following Scott Ballance, Cameron Brown and Bevan Docherty, who, like Braden, won it on his debut. “To win is amazing and I never expected it. I came here to figure out how to race it for next year and I am not sure if I will be able to race as well as today,” Braden said after the race. “Cam is a legend. He is so amazing, strong, repetitive and consistent and never gives up. I knew I could run fast but didn’t know how consistent I would be in the marathon. I was running scared knowing Cam could keep the same pace the whole time.” Continues on page 18

n February 9, Orange Lakes (NZ) Ltd, of which US Today Show host Matt Lauer is a director, received Overseas Investment Office (OIO) consent to acquire the lease for Hunter Valley Station from current lessees Donald and Penelope Cochrane. Continued access to Kidds Bush and Sawyer Burn Track on Hunter Valley Station are two of the conditions imposed on the proposed new lessee. The Wanaka Sun contacted the Department of Conservation with regard to the access to Sawyer Burn Track and a spokesperson said DOC is still examining the OIO’s decision and they are not in a position to comment on the details or timing at the moment.
“DOC acknowledges the decision of the OIO and will work with the new owners on the outcomes in the decision. This will include the granting of a public access easement over the Sawyer Burn Track.” Federated Mountain Clubs president Peter Wilson said they were very thankful for the access to the Sawyer Burn hut. “We are very pleased to see that access guaranteed for the future.” Although the OIO have granted consent, the Commissioner of Crown Lands (Commissioner) is yet to grant consent to the transfer of the leasehold interest to Orange Lakes (NZ) Ltd. The land will continue to be owned by the Crown.
The OIO decision requires Orange Lakes (NZ) Ltd to “actively and diligently support” applications received by the Commissioner from the New Zealand Walking Access Commission (WAC) or other party “for the grant of an easement for public walking access over the Sawyer Burn Track between Kidds Bush and Sawyer Burn hut and between Sawyer Burn hut and Sentinel Peak.” Access must also be granted to “non-commercial walking along the western access to Sentinel Peak”, “continue to permit current non-commercial access to the land for walking and non-motorised cycling on terms to be determined from time to time by

the Consent Holder and its lessees or agents” and “continue to permit the current non-commercial access over Hunter Valley Station Road by walkers, hunters, fishers, non-motorised cyclists and horse riders on terms to be determined from time to time by the Consent Holder and its lessees or agents...” A further clause stated “the Consent Holder must apply to the Commissioner for a grant of a Race Recreation Permit, and if granted, provide public access to the Land for the Annual Cycling Race organisers, participants and associated public” pursuant to the race permit. LINZ stated Orange Lakes (NZ) Ltd has agreed to support and facilitate public access to several important sites on the land, however the Commissioner ultimately has to grant consent to any public access arrangements and will assess separate applications against set criteria. Children at an early childhood centre have decided they want to lend a hand in helping to keep the town tidy. The group of four-year-olds at Oanaka Educare has been taking part in a five week programme with a different theme each week. Having already climbed trees, flown kites, sailed boats and cooked pancakes for their earth, wind, water and fire themes, the children decided that they would pick up rubbish at the rugby club for the final theme of love. “The children noticed that there was rubbish and broken glass on the
street on our walks down to Wanaka Station Park and they wanted to help do something about it by picking up rubbish on the field,” teacher Becca Bown said. “There is a lot of research showing that children learn so much in nature rather than sitting in front of an iPad, and we believe this type of learning provides them with experiences that will benefit them most.” The centre’s five-year-olds will start the programme this week. The construction of a launch pad for NASA’s super pressure balloons at Wanaka Airport at the northeast of the runway is underway. NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) is conducting a safety analysis associated with the new launch pad, and it is anticipated there will be fewer homes impacted by a launch from this new position. The new pad, a 600m in diameter large gravel semi-circle, will enable NASA’s balloon launch operations to run seamlessly alongside other airport operations and tenants on launch day. This year’s launch team comprises scientists from the University of Chicago’s Extreme Universe Space Observatory (EUSO – SPB), 18 technical operations staff from the Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility (CSBF) and at least six senior NASA officials, including the return of Balloon Program Office chief Debbie Fairbrother,
who oversaw the last two successful launches. Senior officials have already arrived in Wanaka, with more personnel due to arrive March 17, to oversee final launch preparations. The team aims to be flight-ready from the end of March/early April. The balloon will fly the University of Chicago’s Extreme Universe Space Observatory (EUSO-SPB) payload on this mission. EUSO-SPB is a high-energy cosmic ray particle astrophysics payload that will test a fluorescence detector and its supporting technologies under the severe operating conditions of the stratosphere. This suborbital flight is a precursor for a mission being planned to launch the EUSO telescope and install it on the International Space Station (ISS). An Airport Get Together function will be held for the Wanaka Airport community and those residents affected by the launch on March 23. The wider community is invited to an information session on the same day, March 23, from 4pm to 6pm.

While there is still abundant planktonic (bluegreen) algae in the Albert Town lagoon, the Otago Regional Council (ORC) has recently conducted further sampling, confirming there is now no potentially toxic algae (cyanobacteria) in the lagoon.
Residents were advised not to use Albert Town lagoon for recreational purposes after suspected blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) was sighted on Tuesday, January 31. The health warning which was in place is no longer in force. ORC staff will continue to monitor the lagoon for the short-term in case the algal bloom re-appears.

Six champions of public access were recognised on Tuesday for their achievements in enhancing public access in New Zealand at a parliamentary ceremony hosted by Associate Minister for Primary Industries Louise Upston. The 2017 Walking Access Champion award winners included Robert ‘Mutt’ Lange, who gifted 53,000ha in Central Otago, and Russell Hamilton, his local manager, who is creating a track network
for public use. The land is under a QEII National Trust covenant to provide public access in perpetuity. The area covered by the land is on Coronet Peak, Glencoe, Motatapu and Mount Soho Stations and is bordered by the Cardrona Valley and the Shotover River. The awards are an annual event organised by the New Zealand Walking Access Commission. WAC chief executive Eric Pyle said the award winners’ efforts were representative of a growing grassroots movement developing trails and facilitating public access across our country.
QAC buys more land near Wanaka Airport S

Queenstown Airport Corporation (QAC) has purchased more land beside Wanaka Airport. The corporation acquired Windermere Farm, a 43ha block of land next to the Wanaka Transport and Toy Museum, last Thursday, March 2. The land adjoins the runway to the north east of Wanaka Airport with frontage to State Highway 6. On December 8, 2016, QAC acquired two lots of land totalling 106ha adjacent to Wanaka Airport. One lot of 65ha is located immediately to the north east of the airport while the second lot, with an area of 41ha, is located to the north west of the airport with frontage to State Highway 6. Both lots had been identified by QAC, in its capacity as operational manager of Wanaka Airport, as being of strategic importance to the future growth and development of Wanaka Airport. “Similar to QAC’s purchase of 106ha of land adjacent to the airport in December last year, Windermere Farm became available on the open market. We could not afford to take the risk that the land could be secured by private developers thereby preventing or restricting the long term
development of Wanaka Airport,” QAC chairman John Gilks said. “Both recent land purchases ensure Wanaka Airport has sufficient land for long-term development.” John said the land acquisition was “unrelated” to the ongoing council process regarding the governance of Wanaka Airport. After consultation was carried out on the future governance arrangements for Wanaka Airport, QLDC received 78 submissions, with 32 submissions for and 27 submissions against its preferred option of leasing the Wanaka Airport to Queenstown Airport Corporation (QAC). A hearing was held in Wanaka on February 13, and QLDC is currently considering the long-term governance of Wanaka Airport. “Regardless of the outcome of council’s governance process, this is a milestone acquisition for Wanaka Airport and provides an opportunity for the future growth of the airport, local communities and region,” John said. “We remain hopeful that QAC will be involved in the future of Wanaka Airport and would welcome the opportunity to engage with the local communities in shaping the airport’s future.”

Parks week kicked off on Saturday March 4, starting seven days in which some of the country’s lesser known parks and reserves are celebrated. Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) selected several locations visited less frequently across the district including the Albert Town lagoon and Wanaka Station Park. QLDC’s arborist Tim Errington and horticultural supervisor Diana

Earthquake planning workshops are continuing across the South Island with a sharper focus following November’s Kaikoura earthquake. Project AF8, a partnership between all six South Island Civil Defence Emergency Management (CDEM) groups, has been collaboratively planning for the first week of response to a major magnitude 8.2 Alpine Fault earthquake. Day-long workshops have so far been held in Greymouth, Nelson and Blenheim over the past two weeks, with representatives from local and regional councils, emergency health
and social services, critical infrastructure and community, tourism and economic development organisations within each region. Jon Mitchell, Programme Manager Project AF8, said that every region in the South Island would be affected by an Alpine Fault earthquake to some extent. “The engagement we are achieving in the workshops reflects the real desire to be as well prepared as we possibly can be,” he said. He added that the development of a coordinated South Island Alpine Fault Earthquake Response (SAFER) Plan would follow the regional planning workshops, with the final plan to be exercised in mid-2018.

Make this the year that Parliament prioritises education, was the message from New Zealand’s largest education union to Wanaka Primary School teachers last week. New Zealand Educational Institute (NZEI) representatives stopped off in Wanaka on their countrywide Heartland bus tour to voice their concerns for education funding. The tour, which stopped in Wanaka last Thursday March 2 is in response to the government’s freeze of core funding for public schools in the 2016 budget. National early childhood education representative and kindergarten teacher Virginia Oakly said, “core funding for early childhood education was frozen in 2010 and seven years on we’re losing teachers and spending so much time on weekly meetings on how we can maximise our income.” “We’re working with that every day, every week and it is really hard. You are one year into your freeze and we don’t want to see you where we are now. This is the year to do something about it.”
The big colourful bus has also been taking postcards and its national petition to each of the schools it visits, which will be presented to Parliament at the end of June. The postcards are being handed out to parents and teachers, who can send them to Parliament to show their support for the petition, with several hundred being posted each day. Wanaka Primary School principal Wendy Bamford said that the frozen funding, which is used to buy things like books, toilet paper and teacher aide resources, was unfair to both staff and students. “It is hard as a decile ten school when you are not getting the money from the government to fund basic equipment and so you have to end up fundraising for it. We can’t rely on that for our resources and our teacher aide staffing,” Wendy said. NZEI Otago and Southland field officer Paula Reynolds said, “that is why we are needing communities to sign this petition. A Central Otago farmer’s discovery of a 1m tall velvetleaf plant next to a fodder beet crop on his property has highlighted the need for all landowners in the region to be on the lookout for the invasive pest plant. Otago Regional Council director environmental monitoring and operations Scott MacLean is praising the man for his vigilance. The farmer contacted an ORC contractor and the plant was removed and destroyed. Scott said the plant possibly germinated from last year’s contaminated seed, which was distributed widely throughout Otago. An inter-agency operation led last year by the Ministry for Primary Industries and supported in Otago by ORC captured and destroyed many of the pest plants to have infiltrated fodder beet crops. ORC is undertaking the preparation of farm management plans for all those affected last year on behalf of the Ministry for Primary Indus-
tries to guard against a possible reoccurrence of the infestation of their crops. Scott said it was important for farmers to work with the contractor to complete the plans and thoroughly implement them. Scott urged Otago farmers on properties where velvetleaf plants had been removed from fodder beet crops last year to be vigilant, because it was suspected in a small number of cases that seeds may have dropped from the plants before they were removed, creating the potential for them to germinate. “Farmers have been excellent at contacting the MPI hotline with their concerns about possibly contaminated fodder beet, but we are asking them to continue to be vigilant not just this season, but over the next few growing seasons,” he said. “It’s a case of them being really proactive, knowing where the potential contamination is, and at appropriate times of the year, such as now, going back and looking for velvetleaf plants which may have sprung up.”

World-renowned community development specialist Peter Kenyon is facilitating two community workshops in Central Otago this week. Through his organisation, Bank of I.D.E.A.S (Initiatives for the Development of Enterprising Action and Strategies), Peter helps communities spark their own ideas and invest themselves in building sustainable futures. Author of 16 books on community and economic development, youth policy and enterprise, he was also a finalist in this year’s Australian of the Year Awards. The first workshop was held in Alexandra yesterday, the second session will be held today, Thursday, March 9, in Cromwell. Peter will run a workshop targeted at communities within the Cromwell basin, from 5pm to 9pm
at the Cromwell Presbyterian Church. In an interactive session he will lead participants to explore where their community is now, where it wants to be and how they can get there. Celebrations were held yesterday (Wednesday March 8) to recognise International Women’s Day and the women of Wanaka and its surrounds. Queensberry’s Archangel Wines invited women, some of whom came from as far as Invercargill and Roxburgh, to get together to create a large collaborative artwork that will remain on display at the vineyard for visitors to see. Archangel owner and artist Mary Zurakowski organised the event, called Make Your Mark, as a fun, creative celebration for women. Meanwhile, New Zealand author, speaker and mentor Janelle Fletcher, who moved to Wanaka just over a month ago, is celebrating the day by spreading her message of female empowerment. A local filmmaker is hoping that community backing will get him to the finals of a competition, opening doors for his career. Tim Pierce, who has been making films for around 12 years, has entered a video into the Shotover G1 competition and is 300 votes and three spots away from securing a place in the finals. “Essentially the Shotover G1 is a gimbal that you can mount on all sorts of tracking vehicles such as cars, boats and off-road buggies. Whilst you’re driving at 80km per hour over rough terrain, the camera stays beautifully steady,” Tim said. “It’s an incredible platform that allows you to dream up all sorts of shot ideas that weren’t previously possible and I’ve already started thinking of

In the 1970s, Margaret Jefferies, her husband Bruce and their three children spent 27 months in the Khumbu region of Nepal helping to set up the Sagarmatha (Mt Everest) National Park. This was a New Zealand Government funded project. Her book, Under the Himalayan Sky, is her memoir of the time the family spent there from 1977 to 1979, with no running water or electricity, hardly any contact from the outside world, and living on the traditional diet of potatoes and tea. Bruce was an assistant supervising ranger with New Zealand’s National Park Service in Wellington for the Department of Lands and Survey in 1976. He was previously stationed at Tongariro National Park for eight years. Bruce’s application for the job in Nepal was accepted despite the fact Margaret and Bruce wanted to take their three young children with them.
They arrived in Khumbu 1977 with little knowledge of the challenges that lay ahead. Margaret (pictured) wrote the memoirs from a diary she had kept. “I also sent lots of letters to my mother and she returned them to me sometime later. From my diary and the letters I wrote it up a long, long time ago, but it wasn’t the right time to publish the story,” she said. After 40 years the park had changed a lot. “I felt it was the right time now to publish it so I could leave it for my children, to remind them of an extraordinary and important time in their lives and to pass that onto their children,” she said. Bruce continues to work in conservation and is currently in the Philippines, working on a mid-term report for a United Nations development project. Under the Himalayan Sky will be launched at the Wanaka Library on March 23, from 5.30pm to 7pm.
Deadlines for new food safety S

Time is running out for some businesses to register under the new Food Act. Food businesses, including restaurants and cafes with an alcohol licence, need to apply by March 31. Sally Johnston, manager food and beverage at MPI, said the new law aims to improve food safety by moving to a risk-based approach. “It sets different rules for different businesses depending on what they do, and focuses on what’s most important for making sure food is safe.” More than 5000 food businesses across the country have already registered under the new law, which came into effect last year. New businesses have to comply straight away, while existing businesses are changing over to the new rules in stages. Other businesses that need to register by the end of the month include THE WANAKA SUN
early childhood education centres that serve food; processors of nuts, seeds or coffee beans; and manufacturers of food for vulnerable people (like babies or the elderly), ready-toeat salads, and sauces, spreads, dips or soups that need to be kept cold. “Local councils and MPI are working with businesses to help them change over to the new rules. We’ve been holding workshops for food businesses around the country and have published online tools, stepby-step guides and videos on the MPI website. “All registered businesses get checked by a food safety verifier. This is an important part of the system, as it’s how we check businesses are making safe food. Those that manage food safety well will be checked less often than those who don’t. “This means that doing things well can help businesses save time and money, as well as giving customers confidence that their food is safe.”

Starting next week, Kahu Youth’s new youth worker, Claire “Frenchy” French, will be running a five-week hulahoop course at the Crib, 11 Russell Street. Frenchy has been a hoopdance (hula hoop) instructor and performer for eight years and has travelled the world hula-hooping. The course is designed for 11 to 18 year olds and costs $50 with all proceeds going back to support the work Kahu Youth do in the community.

“Teaching is my favourite thing to do,” Frenchy said. “I wasn't a natural hula-hooper so I think that makes me a good teacher as I had to break down the tricks and it took me a long time to get things. My classes are fun and the students learn heaps of cool tricks so I'm really excited about sharing with the young people.” The course will take place every Tuesday (4pm to 5pm) from March 14, and places are strictly limited. Around 50 singers from Wanaka, Hawea, Alexandra and Dunedin serenaded locals at the Luggate Hall on Sunday after an intensive two day workshop. This was the third time the workshop had been held at the hall. The group performed ten songs conducted by workshop tutor Claire Stevens, the leader of Dunedin singing group Sunnyside Up. Colin McKay of Alexandra group the RSA Gentleman Singers, was one of four male singers to attend.
“This was an amazing thing to be part of. We have covered so much in just two sessions. Claire is such a great teacher,” Colin said. During the performance Claire commented it was the best workshop yet and the Luggate Hall ecoustics were fantastic for that type of performance. “I am delighted to be here working with such a great group of people. It’s amazing what the group has achieved in such a short time,” Claire said. Organiser Kirsty Barr thanked the Luggate community for making the hall available for the community event. Upper Clutha Youth Council member Logan Lambert (16) recaps on the work the council has done so far and what it hopes to achieve... The Upper Clutha Youth Council (UCYC) was formed in 2015 and consists of young people aged 12 to 16 pushing to make changes for the better in our community. We are a voice for the young people in the Upper Clutha, determined to make our region a better place. The UCYC ran a survey last year at Mount Aspiring College to see what the youth thought about our community and school. They responded with many ideas, such as introducing pants as an option in the girls’ winter uniform. We are currently working away to try and make this become reality. We aim to become the talk-to group for the youth in our area; a group of people everyone can feel safe talking to. Once this is achieved, as we know it will be, we will be able to more actively help out our community and have a greater effect on what happens in our region. The UCYC has already achieved many things. We have helped the school board begin discussing the school uniform in Mount Aspir-
ing College, we have successfully organised and run last year’s Kahu Youth Volunteer Awards and we have participated in multiple volunteer groups. We will also be running loads of fun activities in the Mitre 10 Youth Zone at the Wanaka Show this weekend. As you can see, we are an active and useful group of young people who want to be the voice for the youth living in our area. We are always interested in taking on new members and to have more input from the young people around the Upper Clutha district. Childrens writers Lucy Davey, Leigh Lam and Neal Brown captivated the younger students while Jeanie Ackley, a Natural History photographer, spoke to the older children about her adventures in Antarctica. Wanaka Primary School (WPS) principal Dr Wendy Bamford read some of Kathryn Harper’s works later in the day. WPS librarian Melissa Ashby said the school was so thankful the authors took the time to come and speak with the children. “The energy and the excitement around the children and staff participation has been awesome.

HALF MARATHON TRAINING DIARY Week nine

I somehow can’t believe I’m on week nine, and although I’m getting back on track with my running, I’m still suffering a lack of motivation as the routes start to get longer and harder. Last week I had my halfway point fitness test at boot camp and although I’ve improved on what I achieved in my first fitness test, I still have a long way to go to achieve my goal. As I write this, I’m preparing to run 11km in an hour or so - the longest run I’ve done so far and not too far off the furthest I’ve ever run in my life. I’m also focusing on getting back on the hills this week, having been scared off them when my motivation started to plummet. I mentioned my chat with Martin at Multi Peak Fitness in my last diary, who gave me a whole load of helpful advice and restored my confidence a bit when he said that he also found Mount Iron a challenging run. Knowing that the man who has just done the Motatapu marathon and ran up and down Mount Roy the weekend before also considers Mount Iron difficult made me feel a bit better about my poor attempt at running it a couple of weeks ago. Having chatted with a fellow boot-camper who

is running the half marathon for charity, it got me thinking that running for a charity may give me the boost I need to see the whole thing through. Back in 2014 when I ran the ten mile Great South Run it was the fact that so many of my friends and family had donated money to my cause, The Willow Foundation, that made me keep going to the end. So, as an important cause very close to my heart, I’ve decided to try and raise some funds for the charity again which will hopefully give me the kick up the bum that I need. Maybe a bit more on that next week - until then, Danielle.

Bevin They were at breaking point when I was helicoptered to Dunedin to have my first baby, six and a half years ago. That’s a long time to organise a review! Heather The Ministry of Health has refused to realise or recognise the population growth in the central lakes area. Education has worked it out and built several new schools with more planned, health has done next to nothing it may be just starting to think about it now!

Health and education need to move with the demographics. Holly Clutha Health First in Balclutha has the greatest option for birthing in a rural setting. Just a 3 bed unit hooked onto hospital , full time care after birth etc. It works well, only transfer to hospital in Dunedin if high risk.
Jamie It’s easy enough to ask for midwives to come here but let’s be realistic here. What midwife wants to pay to live here? It’s so over priced it’s not exactly the easiest place to move to? I doubt they’re on doctors wages. Too expensive here. Just look at trademe it’s enough to put anyone off.
Katerina All midwives here are amazing hard working and I am pretty sure underpaid ladies. Hope the situation will get sorted soon.

A question I posed to the experts some time ago was; why is it thought that the crested grebe is the host to the parasite that infects the eyes of bullies? The answer was that a close relative of the parasite found in the eyes of small fish in the Northern Hemisphere use a closely related species of grebe as their final host, thus the presence of bullies infected with this parasite and the presence of grebes in the same area tend to suggest a relationship. John Darby Dr. Presswell continues... For various reasons, we knew with almost complete certainty that the adult of this worm would use the Australasian grebe as its final host. However, getting hold of a dead specimen has hitherto been impossible due to their rarity and protected status. Our struggles to get a DoC permit to cull just one, have continued on and off for several years, and I was resigned to never being able to view this elusive worm. Finally, a few weeks ago John

kindly provided us with the gut of a grebe that had died of natural causes at Lake Wanaka, and we were able to dissect it. Along with some other interesting parasite species, two of which are probably undescribed, we found what was surely the adult of this worm. However, I had to confirm the identity of the larval stage with the new adults by comparing their DNA sequences. Unfortunately, the reality of genetics isn’t CSI (crime scene investigation) stuff and it took several attempts to get a sequence that was matchable. Finally, we got confirmation that we had, after all these years, found the adult of our elusive worm, and only now can it be described and given a scientific name. The larval stage is about 1.5mm in length. The one above has been coloured with a special stain to make it more visible. (To be continued...) Dr. Bronwen Presswell. Explorer, adventurer and mountain guide Guy Cotter can be a difficult person to pin down as somebody who dedicates his life to the mountains. “It’s quite hard for me to commit to talks. I don’t know if I’m going to have a job in the mountains at that time, so I tend to shy away from it for that reason,” Guy, pictured, said. However, Guy will be making an exception at this year’s Wanaka Show, giving a talk about his 25-year relationship with Everest. “It’s my first time at the A&P Show and I’m hoping that people might be interested in what is going on in Nepal, the changes that have gone on since I first went there and look at the bigger picture,” Guy said. As he prepares for his talk, the guide and CEO of Wanaka’s Adventure Consultants is also busy preparing for expeditions across the world, planning trips to Nepal and Everest Base Camp in April and May, before heading to some of Europe’s highest peaks in September and October. “It’s been 25 years since I first went to Everest and this talk will be about some of the things that have happened in Nepal in that time. The country has been through a huge amount of change,” Guy said. “It also has a lot to deal with in terms
of natural disasters, most recently the snowstorm (2014) and earthquake in 2015. They just pick it up and run with it as they don’t have a choice.” “It’s a great place to visit and to see these people who don’t have much still being happy in their lives and content without having much material possession.” Guy, who has summited Everest four times, added that he feels lucky that the first ascent was made by New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary in 1953. “It’s given us that connection with PHOTO: SUPPLIED Nepal, and the Sherpa people identify with New Zealanders,” he said. Guy was key alpine advisor and mountain safety leader for the 2015 hit movie Everest, which recounts the personal adversity of his involvement in what has become an infamous expedition to the world’s highest point in 1996. For those who don’t understand the personal journey and achievement of summiting the world’s highest and most treacherous mountains, Guy says the pursuit can seem frivolous. “People can be having the best experience of their life but on the other hand there is death and injury to deal with. It’s difficult to understand if you haven’t done it,” Guy said. Guy will speak in the GJ Gardner Life and Style Marquee at the Wanaka Show on Friday March 10 at 2.30pm.

As we celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Wanaka Show, a local family has donated a historic cup to the Society to be awarded as the President’s Cup. The Hunt family have a long association with the show dating back to its very beginnings. Phill Hunt’s grandfather John Hunt was the first ever president of the Upper Clutha A&P Society from 1934-1936 and his father William Hunt (also known as Bill) served as president from 1959-1960. Phill Hunt served as president from 2009-2010. In 1938 John Hunt was awarded the cup (pictured) for most points for sheep. To win the cup you needed to win the event for several years in a row. This cup has taken pride of place in the Hunt
family home for three generations and in recognition of the 80th year of the show the Hunt family have donated the cup back to the Society. “We have always thought it was a lovely trophy and we wanted to gift it back on the occasion of the 80th year of the show. Our family want the president to decide who a worthy recipient is each year. We hope that everyone else enjoys it as much as we have over the years,” Phill said. Wanaka Show coordinator Jane Stalker said, “It is such an honour and privilege to bring this cup back into circulation after so many years because of its special connection to the Hunt family over the last 80 years. I look forward to seeing who Doug (the president) chooses to award the cup to this year.”

Wanaka man Doug Stalker is looking forward to his first Wanaka Show in his new role as president. Elected president of the Wanaka Show in August by the Upper Clutha A&P Society, Doug told the Wanaka Sun, “It is a privilege to be president for the 80th show.” “I’m proud to be involved in an enjoyable event which benefits the community we live in.” Doug has been involved in the Wanaka Show for most of his life. His parents were heavily involved in the event at committee-level and he competed in equestrian events as a child and teenager. He has also spent more than ten years in charge of the cattle section of the show. “I have a soft spot for the cattle, having spent time in that section, although I intend to get around all sections during the two days,” he said.
He listed equestrian, dog trials, sheep shearing, wood chopping, goats, sheep and wool as sections of interest. “The special guests and speakers will also be worthwhile.” When the Wanaka Sun asked Doug what his hopes were for this year’s show he said, “I hope we attract a big crowd full of happy faces who enjoy and participate in the fun and events, catch up with old mates and want to come back next year.” Mindful of the changeable nature of the weather over the past few months, Doug also said he hopes “it doesn't rain that hard that I have to be the first president in 80 years to call it off”. As the Wanaka Sun went to print, MetService was predicting a fine day with light wind and a high of 26 degrees Celsius on Friday while there will be cloudy periods and a southeasterly breeze on Saturday.

Children will be well catered for at the 80th Wanaka Show, with plenty of entertainment, such as the classic carnival rides and the famous Jack Russell race plus Queenstown-based children’s author and musician Craig Smith and his Wonky Donkey sidekick will be on the main stage. Kahu Youth and its Youth Council are catering to the ten to 15-year-old age group in its Youth Zone. They will have place to hangout with couches,
a pool table, games and music as well as circus and hula hoop workshops from 10am to 5pm on Saturday. For the younger children, the Upper Clutha Plunket tent will be the place to feed and change baby, or just have some time out in the shade. Mini Muscles will also be at the Wanaka Show with space for the little ones.

The Wanaka Show 2017 Leaping Champion will be presented with a new trophy - the Gary Walker Memorial Trophy. Gary Walker was a local veterinarian and owner of Aspiring Veterinary Services and was the veterinarian at the show from 1986 to 2016. During his time as the show veterinary he attended to injuries and undertook the forbidden substances testing under the royal agricultural banner. Gary passed away in July 2016 and his wife Joss Walker offered to donate a trophy to commemorate Gary’s 30-year contribution as the Wanaka Show veterinarian. Wanaka Show equestrian marshall Fe Howie said the event had not previously had a trophy.

“When Joss offered to donate the trophy, we thought it was a very fitting way to honour Gary’s contribution to the show. The Leaping Champion event is a very prestigious event,” Fe said. There are 40 entrants in the Leaping Champion division this year with qualifiers on Friday. The top ten are selected to compete for the championship on Saturday and are judged over two rounds, or 16 jumps. The event is a style event and rhythm, consistency, rideability and technique are also taken into account. The event is judged on hunter judging standards and the earliest records show there was a competition of a hunter nature in the seventh show held in 1940. German student Lucas Koestr has returned to Wanaka to help Paul Tamati and his crew with their trade marshall duties at this year’s Upper Clutha A&P Show. Last year a chance meeting with Paul ended with Lucas staying at Paul’s house with his family in return for him helping set up the trade show section of the show. After returning to Germany in May 2016 to work and study at the University of Applied Sciences Konstanz, the Tamati family kept in contact with Lucas every Sunday on Skype. Lucas enjoyed his time helping at the show so much, he told Paul he would return to help again this year if he passed all of his exams and he was on holiday from university when the show was held.
“I passed my exams and it is holiday time at uni in Germany, so here I am,” Lucas said. He is spending two-and-a-half weeks in New Zealand and has spent a week travelling before returning to Wanaka this week to help prepare for the show. “Sadly on March 12 I have to leave again,” Lucas said. Paul said it is a pleasure to have Lucas back again. “Our family loves him and we have got to know his parents. We’ve made him an official trade marshall for the A&P Show now,” Paul said. Lucas said he would love to come back again next year to help if it fits in with his study. “So I need to make sure I pass my exams again,” Lucas said. The star attractions of this weekend’s 80th anniversary Wanaka Show include treasured Kiwi icons the Topp Twins, who will perform at 11am and 2pm on both days, and celebrity cook Annabel Langbein, who will be cooking new recipes live on Friday at 12.30pm and Saturday at 1.30pm. Some of the country’s top horses will be competing this year, with 95 classes in equestrian being qualifiers for the prestigious Horse of the Year competition. This year, 265 horses, 190 sheep and 75 cattle are entered in various livestock classes. “The livestock and entertainment programme for 2017 is particularly
special as we wanted it to reflect the Wanaka Show’s significant 80th anniversary milestone,” Wanaka Show coordinator Jane Stalker said. “There will certainly be something that appeals to everyone of all ages and interests – it will be a busy two days and we are really excited about it.” There will also be about 450 trade exhibitors from around NZ present. The Wanaka Show is held at the Wanaka Showgrounds on Ardmore Street – gates open 8am-5pm on March 10 and March 11. Tickets can be purchased at the gate for $15 per adult for a one-day pass or $20 for a two-day pass. A youth pass (13-17 years) is $5 for both days, and children aged 12 and under are free.

Head All Blacks coach Steve will be joined by wife Tash in an informal talk at the show’s corporate partners evening on Friday March 10. Corporate sponsorship manager Chrissy Stevenson said that the event was a mix and mingle evening put on as a thank you for the show’s sponsors.
“The show is such a success story and we could not do any of it without our corporate partners to maintain the quality of our infrastructure. This social event is a thank you to them,” Chrissie said. “We know that Steve values the show and we’re really, really fortunate and grateful that he has made himself available. He speaks all over the world and is very sought after.” The social evening will take place on the Friday of the show from 6.30pm to 8pm. Once sponsor numbers are confirmed tickets will be released for sale to the general public but these are expected to be very limited.

The Wanaka Sunflower Sisters Club held its annual prize giving on Friday, March 3. The club was started last year by Jill Gardiner who invited a group of friends to compete in growing sunflowers. Now in its second summer, the club has around 15 members whose aim is to grow the tallest sunflower plant and the sunflower with the biggest head. “We held our finale last Friday to find the winners including the booby prize for the least amount of growth,” Jill said. “The booby prize winner didn’t get past germination stage.”
The winner was Hetty Van Hale for height and flower width. The height was 2.34m from soil to the start of the head. The flower head size was 26cm in diameter. Jude Thomson’s 2.03m tall flower, with a 24cm flower diameter was placed second, while Kaye Hercus grew the third tallest sunflower, standing at 1.99m. Spanish trip fundraiser D

Four Mount Aspiring College students are currently fundraising to join 28 others on a trip to Spain next month. Last year, MAC students delivered the Wanaka Sun, among other fundraising ventures, to raise funds for the trip which was to take place in September 2016. The trip was postponed due to concerns for the students’ health after two cases of meningococcal disease were confirmed at the college. So far Tyler Greeks, Caitlin Roberts, Reilly Arnesen and Flynn Brown have had fun marshalling the bike and swim leg of the Sovereign Tri, manning the car park for the Challenge Wanaka, and selling raffle tickets and ice- blocks. This weekend they will be running the tea rooms at the Wanaka Show. “We will set up a pop-up cafe within
the rugby clubrooms and sell everything from homemade sandwiches and cheese rolls, to tasty pies, cakes and fruit salad. And of course the essential tea and coffee to get everyone through a busy day,” Reilly’s mum Kylie Arnesen said. All profits from the day will go back to the students. “A big thanks has to go out to the Upper Clutha Rugby Club who has kindly donated the use of the rooms to us: a massive saving for which we are truly grateful.” The students will also be selling raffle tickets with three prizes up for grabs - a whole wild venison, butchered, packed and frozen (first prize), 4m pine firewood, delivered and stacked in the Wanaka area (second prize) and a bag filled with groceries (third prize). Applications are now open for NZ Art Show’s 2017 RT Nelson Emerging Artist Awards. Established in 2012, the awards recognise the talents of emerging artists who are studying for a diploma or degree in visual arts at an established New Zealand art school. Art schools can nominate their top students and art students may also nominate themselves. Four art students will be selected to receive $2500 each. NZ Art Show executive director Carla Russell said, “The RT Nelson Emerging Artist Awards are a vital component of the NZ Art Show. They were THE WANAKA SUN

Over 3500 competitors were treated to a perfect day for the 13th hosting of the Macpac Motatapu, a one day multi-sport race with walkers, runners, triathletes and mountain bikers competing in a variety of races from the 15km Miners Trail, to the 51km Ultra-Run. Dougal Allan showed that he had well and truly overcome the effects of his record breaking performance at Challenge Wanaka a fortnight ago, taking out the UDCFinance Xterra Triathlon in a time of 4:09:27 “It was tough, I am not conditioned to the mountains at the moment. But I came here because I wanted a good adventure and this is what I used to do, and I still love it. Last week I still
couldn’t really walk so I didn’t think I would race, but on about Wednesday I loosened up and knew I would be okay. Today was about having fun though and the win is a bonus,” Dougal said. In the feature Skoda Mountain Bike race, Kate Fluker (Queenstown) won for a sixth time in succession, while Tim Rush (Oamaru) emerged quickest in a fiercely fought men’s race, just edging out road professional Hayden McCormick (Te Awamutu) and Pioneer winner James Williamson (Alexandra). Olympic medal winning rowers Mahe Drysdale and Nathan Cohen might have entered for fun, but they showed just how competitive they are with a win in the new team category in the Skoda Mountain Bike, covering the 47km in an impressive 2:50:59.

Kyokushin Karate Wanaka held its annual training day on Saturday March 4 for instructors and senior students from around Otago and Canterbury. The Wanaka dojo is part of Mas Oyama Karate New Zealand (MOKNZ). Attending from out of town this year were instructors and students from Christchurch, Karitane, Dunedin and Hamilton.
The day began at 8.30am with a warm-up session with some of the junior members of the Wanaka dojo. The instructors then went out to Diamond Lake and ran to the summit of Rocky Mountain. Training sessions were held over the course of the day at the Matukituki River, Wanaka Station Park, Pembroke Park and then back to the dojo at the Scout Den for a sparring session and fitness test. Sensei Trevor Bailey, from Wanaka, said it was a solid performance by all who took part and the number attending each year is growing.

More than 200 golfers and auction bidders have helped raise tens of thousands for St John’s Ambulance. The annual charity golf weekend took place over three days at Wanaka Golf Club, from Friday March 3 to Sunday March 5, with 54 teams taking part. This was followed by an auction on the Sunday afternoon, and while final figures have not been tallied up yet, organising committee member Phil Thirkell said that the amount raised could be
up to $20,000. “It was a very successful event and we did a good job for St John, who were there on the Sunday and said they were absolutely thrilled with the way it had been organised for them,” Phil said. Phil added that the money, which will go towards a new ambulance defibrillator, has nudged the total raised by the event for local charities over the 14 years it has been running up to more than a quarter of a million dollars. Another local charity, still to be decided by the committee, will benefit from money raised at the 2018 event this time next year.

The third event in the Bike Wanaka Summer Series took place at the Hawea Dam track last Sunday, March 5. Although there were fewer competitors in the adults section this time around, the kids section was very well represented. Wanaka Kids Club owner Delfina Batchley said the kids had a great time. “It went really well. The Hawea Dam track was a fantastic venue. We

had a really great turnout with the under-11s turning out in force. It was a really good atmosphere and everyone really gave it everything. It was great to check out a new location,” she said. The fourth and final race in the series will be held at Lismore Park on Sunday, March 19 at 10am. “We are really looking forward to seeing everyone there as the series winners will receive their prizes,” Delfina said. For the adults this will be a rogaine style event along with an “end of summer” Bike Wanaka members get together.

Wanaka’s GODZone teams have told of the highs and lows they faced during last week’s 420km adventure race. First-time team Peak Endeavour, made up of Brendan Clark, Rachel Knott, Bryce Hamilton and Alex Wilmshurst cruised to the finish line in 16th place, five days, one hour and 35 minutes after starting. “We were just over a day behind the leaders and we were all really happy with how we performed,” team captain Brendan said. “It was pretty much everyone’s first adventure race so we are all really new to this game.” Shonagh North, Mark Cockroft, Julian Holmes
and Vicky Sandford’s team Kai Whaka Pai made 35th place with a time of five days, 19 hours and seven minutes, achieving a full course ranking. Shonagh said that the team were very happy and satisfied to complete the full course after a short course ranking last year. “The team came together and worked really well. There were a few ups and downs along the way but we were under no illusions that it was going to be hard,” Shonagh said. “The first day was probably the toughest but getting through that made us stronger as we went on and we have some very special moments to walk away with.
