he Trustees of the Wanaka Watersports Facility Trust (WWFT) were pleased to receive the news that the appeal against the Watersports Facility resource consent has been disallowed by the Environment Court. In an interim decision granted on Monday June 20th Environment Court Judge Hassan found that “the proposal will offer important community benefits and that its effects (including on the Outstanding Natural Landscape) are appropriate, subject to modifications we have required and various conditions.” Specifically the Court was satisfied that its decision “does not allow for a development contrary to any relative objective or policy.”

The Court found the proposal to be materially consistent with what the existing and proposed plans and the risk management plan contemplate on the part of the reserve where the facility is proposed.
“Therefore we find that there is no adverse precedent risk associated with granting consent on the basis we have decided,” Judge Hassan said in the decision. WWFT chairman Michael Sidey
said, “It had been a great team effort and we have achieved something special for Wanaka. On behalf of the trustees I thank the Steering Group, expert and lay witnesses for your support, expertise and confidence.” WWFT trustee Nic Blennerhassett said, “We are very pleased that the appeal was disallowed. It has been a year since the resource consent was granted in our favour, so we are pleased that this decision will allow us to move forward. We are currently reading through the decision and will be making a joint submission to the Court with QLDC within the time limits set out in the interim decision.” Prue Wallis said she and her husband Sir Tim Wallis were delighted. “It is a wonderful thing for Wanaka and its community. Too much time and money has been spent getting to this point and we hope this is an end to the fighting.”

Race for mental health D
DANIELLE BUTLER

Local adventure racer Mal Law has returned to Wanaka following a 1700km run around the coast of Wales with fellow adventurer James Harcombe. James and Mal, pictured, took on the mammoth challenge, called Chasing the Dragon, from May 2 to 27 to raise money for New Zealand’s Mental Health Foundation and UK mental health charity Mind, inviting New Zealanders to take on their own May challenge at the same time. “I’ve done quite a few charity runs and try to give other people the opportunity to join me a day at a time with the proviso that they help with fundraising, but I didn’t see too many people jumping on a plane to Wales,” Mal said. “That’s how we came up with My May Challenge; a parallel challenge in New Zealand to get people active, to set a goal and help with fundraising.” Both men have first-hand experience of depression and suicide which
motivated them to take on the tough route, which has only ever been run twice before, with the added challenge of a detour up Mount Snowdon, the highest peak in Wales. So far, James and Mal’s journey has raised £10,000 ($17,617NZD) for Mind and almost $20,000 for the Mental Health Foundation, with more needed to hit their $25,000 target. This doesn’t include $34,681 raised by New Zealanders taking part in their own My May Challenges. “We’re really chuffed with that and it makes us think that it is a strong concept so we’re looking at turning it into an annual fundraiser to get New Zealanders out and active and raise some money too,” Mal said. “My main goal for the next year is to pick up the My May Challenge. I’ll continue to get the messages out that I am very passionate about, but will take some time out myself after all the punishing I’ve done to my body.” To donate visit everydayhero. co.nz/event/mymaychallenge Pictured: Mal and James on day 14 of the challenge.

Plastic Bag Free Wanaka (PBFW) has kicked off Plastic Free July early with a movie screening where viewers were encouraged to make pledges of what they would try to give up in July. The committee showed Bag It, a movie exposing the effects of plastic consumer merchandise, last Thursday June 15, to a crowd of almost 100. Chairperson of the PBFW committee Anna van Riel said that the evening had raised around $1200 to go towards the PBFW movement. “There’s a massive national movement right now. My phone has been ringing off the hook and we’ve had lots of community groups from across New Zealand who have contacted us. It’s really cool to see so many groups around New Zealand making the change,” Anna said. “The overall goal is to all join hands around the country to become one movement.”

Luxury lodge planned for centre D
DANIELLE BUTLER
newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz
Plans for a 33-room tourism lodge in the centre of Wanaka, which could be built by November, have been released by a global professional services firm specialising in real estate and investment management. In a statement released by JLL’s Auckland office, the company said it was marketing a “centrally located, new tourism lodge in the heart of the Wanaka commercial district”. JLL agent John Binning said that the 1012sqm site, currently the home of the Pembroke Putt mini golf course behind New World at 67 Brownston Street, was a “fabulous location” for the proposed lodge. “The tourism lodge concept is fitting with the natural New Zealand experience, which is one of the key reasons why tourists flock to areas like Queenstown and Wanaka,” Mr Binning said. JLL said that the current owner of the site, B Property Group, had identified a niche market for a uniquely designed tourism lodge which they are building on the site and would operate under a long term lease to B Hotel Group. The lodge’s plans include an on-site cafe and wine bar as well as 33 guest rooms which will be marketed as accommodation pods designed to accentuate the natural elements of Wanaka region. The property design and layout is based on Byron Bay’s The Atlantic, which is made up of private cottages and open communal spaces. “New Zealand is experiencing a tourism boom and the township of Wanaka is no exception. With tourists visiting in both the winter and summer
months, Wanaka accommodation is always in high demand,” Mr Binning said. “The New Zealand Government is wanting to increase tourism numbers over the next few years, which means sites like this, with a proposal like this one that is ready to go, are a fantastic investment opportunity.” JLL’s national research manager Tom Barclay said that hotel occupancy in Wanaka had increased by almost 20 percent to 64.7 percent over the past three years. “Wanaka is increasingly appealing as a more low-key and less expensive alternative to live in, or as a holiday destination than Queenstown. Major developments are planned for Wanaka which will lead to population growth and improved amenities and services for the area,” Mr Barclay said. “The Queenstown Lakes District captures 10.1 percent of all visitor expenditure in New Zealand with the total tourism spend for the year to January 2017 being $2.557 million.” Lake Wanaka Tourism’s general manager James Helmore said that he currently had limited information about the lodge in order to make an official comment. “That said, in general any new accommodation in Wanaka will be welcome as existing supply is definitely getting more constrained over the peak period,” Mr Helmore said. Mr Binning said that the property was expected to draw visitors for its design and concept alone. Current predictions suggest that the lodge would be completed by November 2017, allowing for visitors to start booking the property over the summer months. Pictured: Street view projection for the new lodge.
PBFW committee member Gina Dempster said that they were thrilled to see so many pledges to give up plastic on the evening. “Quite a few people have said they’re really scared but want to try it.” “It doesn’t have to be giving up everything though. If people are nervous they can try giving up the top four; cups, straws, bags and bottles,” Gina said. At the end of July, the committee will hold an evening for people to come together and share their experiences, including what they didn’t manage to give up. “It will be a great chance for people to talk about what they do at home, swap tips and give support,” Gina said. Gina added that people should always remember the waste hierarchy of reduce, reuse, recycle. “Even though recycling is good, reducing your use of plastic is so much better, so start with that,” Gina said. With voting now closed for the by-election in the Dunstan constituency of the Otago Regional Council, progress results issued by the ORC at 1pm Tuesday have Ella Lawton well in the lead on 7184 votes and Gary Kelliher, of Alexandra on 5213. In last year’s election Ella’s mother Maggie Lawton won the seat, with Michael Laws and Graeme Bell being elected to the two other Dunstan Constituency positions. The by-election was triggered when Maggie Lawton passed away in March after being diagnosed with cancer last year. Gary Kelliher missed out on retaining his ORC seat in last year’s October local body elections, placing fourth with 7643, with Michael Laws being elected with 7648 votes. Voter return percentage in this election is currently 34.1 percent being 12,426 votes, excluding votes in transit to the processing centre and special votes.

A warning about toxic algae in the lower Cardrona River issued earlier this year has now been lifted. The presence of the potentially toxic algae Phormidium was confirmed in the river in January, prompting Otago Regional Council (ORC) to warn dog owners to be vigilant alongside Otago’s rivers and streams.
ORC science manager Dr Dean Olsen said that high river flows before Christmas had kept the region’s rivers relatively free of the algae. However warm weather post-Christmas had caused Otago’s river levels to drop, encouraging the formation of the algae on river beds. ORC team leader communications Mark Peart said the warning had now disappeared, and with colder temperatures and higher flows there was little chance of it returning until the warmer weather.

Youth worker Richard Elvey said due to some unexpected funding issues with this year’s event, many businesses, funders and community groups had rallied around Kahu Youth Trust to help. “Without them this event simply could not have taken place and it has reinforced this as a real local
community event by the community. Even at this late stage we are still in discussions with others. We’ve been blown away by the kindness and support we’ve received,” Richard said. Matariki kicks off from 2.30pm and will last until 6pm at the Dinosaur Park on Wanaka’s lakefront. There will be performances from local people and schools, workshops, a community hangi and fire performances from youth worker Claire ‘Frenchy’ French and Kahu Youth’s young people, all rounded off with a fireworks display. Treble Cone postpones opening S

Treble Cone management have postponed the opening of the ski field due to insufficient snow cover in the Home Basin. Despite receiving snowfall earlier in the month and upgraded snowmaking to Upper Easy Rider, the warmer temperatures over the past week have meant snow making has not been enough to proceed with opening day. Treble Cone Ski Area CEO Jackie van der Voort said, “Operational staff are monitoring the forecast closely and weather services forecast freezing levels to drop during the week. We are hopeful that this will fall further allowing us to make more snow on the main runs in the Home Basin, putting the mountain in a position to open.” The base building sits at 1260m altitude, one of the lowest in the Southern Lakes. “All our staff are ready to go as soon as the snow does come and we are hoping that the colder temperatures are not far away. Unfortunately, the mountain has been experiencing extremely warm conditions for this time of year. It is difficult in these weather conditions to create snow all the way down to our base. We will open as soon as we physically can for all of our customers, the ski community and staff,” Jackie said. Construction of the state of the art weather station and webcam at the summit of the Crown Range has begun. The project will offer road contractors and drivers a live feed of road conditions on one of New Zealand’s highest sealed alpine roads. Resource consent for the project was received last month and is a joint venture between Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC), MetService and the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA), and is expected to be online and operational by mid-July. The high-resolution data from the new station, where the road will be broken down into 30 metre segments, will enhance forecasts for the Crown Range and the wider Queenstown Lakes District to produce a new road snow warning service for the Crown Range road. The high-definition panoramic web camera will be installed as part of the weather station and will offer the public an opportunity to check the conditions at the Crown Range summit, with images being refreshed in real time every four minutes. QLDC policy, standards and asset planner Polly
Lambert said the new services will help drivers to make better travel decisions. “The Crown Range is regularly impacted by winter weather and conditions can be challenging for both residents and visitors alike. This information will be added to QLDC’s daily morning winter road report, as well as our social media channels and website, offering much greater visibility of the conditions up there,” Polly said. MetService business development manager, key accounts Peter Fisher said, “The new services promise to improve the support provided to QLDC. MetService is excited to deliver this innovative solution.” “It’s the first of its kind in the southern hemisphere and is specifically tailored to the district’s winter road-weather conditions,” Peter said. NZTA journey manager Lee Wright said, “Anything that will encourage road users to plan ahead and stay safe during the winter months is to be applauded. It is a very useful tool, working alongside the Transport Agency’s traffic and travel webpage, 0800 4 HIGHWAYS freephone service and social media as well as the QLDC’s excellent winter road reports and the information on MetService’s website.“

The MAC 1st XV in playoff finals UC hockey women win I PHOTO:SUPPLIED
IAIN WEIR
Rugby Correspondent
Mount Aspiring College 1st XV has secured a place in the finals playoff of Otago Premier Schools rugby competition by finishing the first round in sixth place. This is the best result ever achieved by Mount Aspiring College (MAC) and is a credit to the team, who where unlucky not to score more points. It was 20-0 at halftime. In the second spell MAC was more precise, stringing phases together and scored the only try in that half. Whilst beaten the team can take confidence from this game for the rematch when it meets Waitaki in the finals. Jeremy Ferguson, in the starting 15 for the first time this year, took his chance and stood out especially on defence. The midweek game against Dunstan College was highly anticipated, especially for the Cromwell lads in the MAC team and it did not disappoint. This
was a must-win game for the team that was going to make the top six playoffs. MAC rose to the challenge and with another dominant defensive effort Dunstan were rarely a threat. That pressure eventually resulted in some frustration and ill-discipline from Dunstan, who had two players yellow carded and one red carded during the match. MAC stuck to its game plan reasonably well and apart from some wayward kicking, took its chances well to score four tries. The halftime score was 12-6 to MAC who then extended in the second half to win 24-11. Sam Howard had another impressive game with outstanding defence putting the opposition on the back foot. Finn Lawson controlled the lineout well and also made some great runs scoring an excellent try along the way. The team now has a well-earned week off to recover and regroup before the final round commences. Pictured: Clearing kick from half-back Lachie Weir.

The Upper Clutha (UC) senior women hockey team won the Southland Champions Trophy last weekend. UC faced hard-hitting opponents Alexandra last week starting the game by dominating possession early on, capitalising with a field goal scored by Allannah McRae in her first game of the season. Alexandra soon evened up the score but UC made the most of the opportunities provided by two penalty
corners when Debbie Forrest scored with a straight shot while Becs Holland nimbly picked up a rebounded ball flicking it into the back of the net. The second half was more even. Anna Rowley made some outstanding passes from the midfield, and the fourth goal, by Carla Molyneaux, was a beautiful deflection from another penalty corner. The final score was 4-2 to UC who were crowned the Southland Champions. The team is pictured with the trophy.
Best finish for Senior Netball team S
STAFF REPORTER
editor@thewanakasun.co.nz
The MAC Senior A Netball team travelled to Dunedin last weekend to compete in the Otago Secondary Schools competition (OSS) finishing fifth. The team competed at OSS last weekend and after two very hard fought games against Dunstan (3117) and a very strong Waitaki Girls High School (22-21) won that game to finish a reputable fifth behind St Hildas Collegiate, Columba, Taieri and South Otago. Coach Louise Carnie said this was the most successful achievement MAC A has achieved at this tournament. “The team fought hard for that fifth placing after a strong start against a Georgie Salter coached Waitaki Girls High, winning the first quarter 9-8,
ahead 11-10 then dropping behind in the third 17-19. The team converted all its centre passes, relying on one turnover to nudge ahead. The team was rewarded with a massive defensive push, grabbing the win in the last two minutes. The girls showed character beyond their years and the community should be very proud of what they are achieving,” Louise said. The team has had a reasonably successful season in both the local competition and OSS so far. “We have won all but one game in the local competition (7 wins, 1 loss) and are looking to improve on that. In the only game the team lost, it was missing four members who were on a school trip to Spain,” Louise said. The South Island Secondary Schools competition will be held in Christchurch from September 4-8 and the girls are aiming for a recordbreaking performance once again.

Wrinkly Rams trounce Kurow B L
Rugby Correspondent
Fans of senior rugby in the Upper Clutha celebrated both a win and a defeat after two contrasting results were played out at the Showgrounds on Saturday June 17. The team, affectionately known as the Wrinkly Rams, took on Kurow B in a curtain-raiser with an emphatic 63-0 victory. Age was no limitation for a number of the Wrinkly Rams who, despite a relaxed warmup, were able to muster up a big performance. The mix of youth in the team meant there were talented players of past and present throwing the ball around together, and players whose partners thought they probably shouldn’t have been playing managed to defy the graying hair, and look likely to don the black and gold once again. The premier game between Upper Clutha and the Maniototo Maggots began well for Upper Clutha with Tom Hudson opening the scoring, which was
then followed by a long period of defence against a determined Maniototo team. Maniototo made early uncharacteristic errors at telling moments, which gave the Rams chances to create a lead. But throughout the game, when it felt like the Upper Clutha boys were gathering momentum, Maniototo would disrupt the set piece and push the Rams back. As the game rolled on, the Maniototo was able to knock over kickable penalties that kept it well and truly in the game. Despite the setbacks, a number of opportunities were taken by the Rams, including tries to Jason Richan PHOTO: LUKE ROBSON and Josh Roberts. While the Upper Clutha forwards did well, the Maniototo pack was a constant force and gave very few metres away. Maniototo exacted revenge after its earlier round one loss to the Rams with a 32-19 win. Those watching the 80 minutes would agree how important winning the set piece is, and as such, Maniototo’s dominance earned it a deserved bonus point victory. The Rams are pictured strong in defence.

Wanaka Golf Club’s youngest female player has her sights set on the top, making her debut in competitive golf this year and winning half of her games so far. Fifteen-year-old Heidi Niederer, pictured, has won two of her four ladies’ competitions, playing against around 20 of the club’s female golfers of all ages. Men’s club captain and Heidi’s father Jeff Niederer said that although
Heidi has been playing for around two to three years, this is her first time properly competing. “She loves it and her goal is to be the best in the club. She wants to go through the grades and see how she gets on.” “She pays for her lessons herself with her pocket money; she just really loves it,” Jeff said. Heidi and Jeff competed together in the Eula Dunnage mixed foursomes on Sunday June 11, while Jeff celebrated his third hole-in-one at the club on Wednesday June 14.
