Dancers hit Hollywood D

group of Wanaka dancers have been taking Los Angeles by storm with performances on Hollywood Boulevard and on stage at Disneyland. Dance Out Loud students 16-year-old Laura Erichsen and Sonya Palmer, 14-year-old Thea Erichsen, 17-year-old Ella Maluschnig and 12-year-old Maya Erichsen will finish their LA dance tour this week after 13 days of choreography and workshops with professional dancers. The girls joined 40 dancers from the Dean McKerras School of Dance in Palmerston North and Dance Out Loud director, teacher and choreographer Rachel Erichsen said the girls were enjoying being part of the extended dance group. “We have taken classes with amazing dance teachers at the prestigious studios of IDA, Edge Performing Arts and the Millennium Dance Centre. The level of dance and choreography is incredible and the girls are rising to the challenge and getting right amongst it,” Rachel said. As the Wanaka Sun went to print, the girls had performed their group routine on Hollywood Boulevard for crowds of passers-by and were preparing to perform on stage at Disneyland’s Fantasyland on Wednesday July 19. The group were also looking forward to their mock audition and workshop at Disneyland

Performing Arts. “We are having a ball. They have also had seminars with professional dancers talking about what it is like to work in the industry and been to a live taping of a TV show, which was so awesome and interesting,” Rachel said. “It sure is an eye-opening experience of a lifetime for these Wanaka dancers.” The girls said they were also enjoying the plus 30 degree temperatures and seeing sights such as Beverly Hills, Rodeo Drive, Santa Monica beach and Runyon Canyon. Wanaka man with a lifelong interest in conservation has won a prestigious award for his work promoting science and technology in the community. John Darby, who Sun readers will recognise as the author of the ‘Grebe Diary’, will receive the Royal Society of New Zealand Companionship Award, one of only three given out across the country this year. He will be presented with the award next

month by Richard Bedford, president of the Royal Society. John said, “I am very humbled, it’s an amazing honour. You don’t do it with any expectation, but I’m very proud.” John will receive the award for his work involving children in science and Dr. Graeme Ballantyne, who nominated John for the award, says it is well-deserved. “He’s been instrumental in a wide

range of youth activities, he’s done a lot of research and he’s still active. He’s done a lot of work in the past for which he hasn’t been recognised and he deserves recognition,” Graeme said. Nominations for the award open late in the year and close on March 31 the following year. Anyone can be nominated and those that are have an application submitted by the nominators, which is then

Gill Sutherland, director of operations at the Royal Society, said the award is rare and is about more than someone’s excellence in research. “People are nominated for promoting science and technology beyond their normal job, rather than for their research, and for public engagement. There are only usually one or two awarded each year, sometimes none,” Gill said. Target hit for canine companion D

A Lake Hawea family who has spent the past year raising $20,000 for Assistance Dogs NZ (ADNZ) has hit its target. The Gibson family was given companion dog Niles last year from ADNZ to make life easier for ten-year-old Sabina Gibson, who has a rare genetic disorder called Neurofibromatosis Type 1. ADNZ is a trust that raises funds to train dogs to assist individuals and their families whose lives are affected by disability. It takes 15 months and costs $20,000 to train a companion dog and when Golden Labrador Niles came into their lives, the Gibson family pledged to raise that figure towards an assistance dog for another family. The Wanaka Upper Clutha Lions Club has been a large driver of the fundraising, with fundraisers and an application to the Lloyd Morgan Lions Club Charitable Trust raising more than $10,000 towards the total.

Club president Ann Saunders said that the club felt very good about how much it had raised towards the cause. “We feel good about supporting the family and thought it was a very worthwhile cause. ADNZ is not government-funded and we thought it would be great to help raise money for the next family to get a dog, as Niles has made the Gibsons’ lives a lot easier,” Ann said. Sabina’s mother Claudia said, “Niles is fantastic. It is so great to have him in our family. The bond between the dog and Sabina is so nice to see. She has a friend that doesn’t judge her regardless of her disability and we all love him. He is not only good for Sabina, he is good for all of us.” The remainder of the funds were raised by Hawea Flat School, which Sabina attends, and public and business support. The teenage members of the Lions Club have pledged that their fundraiser for 2017 will be in support of ongoing expenses for Niles encountered by the family. Red Bridge work rolls closer

Supporters of a project to tidy up the reserve around Luggate’s Red Bridge are celebrating the news that work could begin as early as the end of July, however some of the details remain uncertain. Queenstown Lakes District Council’s (QLDC) Wanaka parks and reserves officer Diana Manson said that the council had been talking to an arborist about removing some of the pines at the Red Bridge. “We do not have a date, timeframe or definite go-ahead yet as we will need to talk to the archaeologist prior to any work being undertaken,” Diana said. Head of the Red Bridge Historic Reserve Group’s development sub committee Graham Taylor told QLDC staff that the group would like to turn the corner by the bridge into a “nice recreation reserve” with plans

drawn up by landscape architect Anne Steven. QLDC committed a $10,000 grant to the project in its annual plan for 2017/18. Chair of Luggate Community Association Graeme Perkins said that the community would like to see the grant given annually. “We want it dished out to us so that we can progress the work. We’ve got a good working bee at Luggate to push this through and we want to go ahead and do the place up and make it look good,” Graeme said. The Community Association believes tidying up the area would also help to alleviate problems associated with freedom camping in Luggate. “There will be parking, toilets on the top side and a pump to get water up and feed the trees. We have a lot of people parking around the streets now in Luggate and the campground is full nearly every night, so it’s a step in the right direction,” Graeme said.

Hawea Youth Club is going from strength to strength two months on from its launch. Despite its short history, the club now has 33 children on its roll and attracts between 15 and 20 every Friday night. Sarah and Dave Millwater set up the club and are delighted with its progress so far. Dave said “It’s gaining strength and going well. The whole idea was to get kids off their devices and running around the hall. The kids choose the activities and have their own committee with their own rules.” The committee has banned the use of mobile phones, except to take pictures or contact parents. Sarah said, “Kids come from Luggate, Lake Hawea and Hawea Flat. We started it up because the hall was free on Fridays and we wanted to look towards the future and community projects.” The club’s young membership has also started fundraising, recently selling jacket potatoes at the

Wanaka Artisan market, face-painting at Matariki and organising a quiz night at Hawea Community Centre. The club hopes to raise $4000 to purchase inline skates for roller discos in the future and has already raised $600. The club’s hectic schedule shows no signs of slowing. It has already hosted up-cycling and pizza-making and future plans include a local sculptor coming to teach the children about casting. As another fundraiser, members of the public will be able to buy a ‘restaurant table’ at the youth club for the night, with club members waiting on their tables and running the kitchen, with help from a local chef. Hawea Youth Club meets every Friday night during term time from 6pm to 9pm for anyone aged 11-18. There is no registration needed, so anyone interested can just turn up on the night. The quiz is tonight (Thursday July 20) at Lake Hawea Community Centre at 7:30pm. It is $5 per person and people of all ages are welcome. Everyone is asked to bring a prize for the raffle. Cardrona women get together G

GLENDA TURNBULL

editor@thewanakasun.co.nz

The Cardrona Valley Women’s Club latest get together was a great success with 25 women attending. Sarah Stewart (pictured) is behind the group and has great plans for the club’s future with plans underway to get together each season. Sarah moved to the valley seven years ago and farms the Lee/Scurr farm with her fiance Willy Scurr. Sarah wants to bring the new faces and families of the valley together with the families that have been around for generations. “I started the get together when I first arrived here. We got together very irregularly, then everyone had babies and everyone was too busy. We had our first get together in a while in May and I am aiming to have one every quarter,” Sarah said. She was surprised at who came out of the woodwork. “It wasn’t only ladies who had been in the valley for eons, there were a lot of new people from all walks of life. It was really cool. There are a lot of young families in the valley now and they were stoked to get to know other women in their community,” she said. Sarah said the Cardrona Valley is a nice little community to live in and said getting together regularly helps people to make connections with others in the community. “I see my role is to establish and maintain the community feel in the valley. As Wanaka and the Cardrona Valley are growing, I feel we are losing contact with the grassroots of our

community,” she said. Sarah is keen to continue the quarterly get togethers and is planning the next get together with the coming of spring. The group is also organising the Cardrona Christmas Fete this year. There are currently around 35 ladies in the club and Sarah said new members are welcome. Three talented computing students scooped second place out of 150 participants at the New Zealand Cyber Security Challenge last weekend (July 15 to 16), held at the University of Waikato.

Year 13 Mount Aspiring College students Samuel Sandri, Tristin Weastell and Sean Dickey, pictured with their cheque, came away with second place in the secondary schools category, winning $800. Parent Mei Lian Dickey said that the result was impressive given how many participants were at the competition, including secondary schools, universities and professionals from the computer industry.

“The students had to employ problem solving skills and infiltrate vulnerable websites, steal fictional data from databases as well as recover deleted data from memory sticks as part of the challenge,” Mei said. “They were tied with the top secondary schools team, only losing out in the final round on the subject of detecting vulnerabilities and writing best practice cyber security policies.” Mei said that personnel from major companies and government agencies including the New Zealand Defence Force, the Government Communications Security Bureau and Interpol were at the event, providing possible career pathways for the students in the field of cyber security.

He worked as a farm hand for two years, before taking a position at the Agricultural Research Centre. “It was science heaven. There were scientists from all over the world, including a co-winner of the Nobel Prize,” John said. He later worked at Canterbury University, which took him to the Antarctic, before beginning work at the Otago museum, where he stayed for 31 years, becoming assistant director. It was here that his community work began after he instigated a change of approach. “Museums focused on studying animals that were dead, but I felt there was a role beyond that. There was an opportunity to take science and museums out to the community.” He started children’s clubs, including explorers’ weeks, for seven to 12-year-olds, and science workshops for secondary school children, introducing them to a range of subjects not available in school.

Bike Wanaka’s Kooza trail is undergoing a facelift with the help of Mount Aspiring College’s (MAC) volunteer students. Bike Wanaka committee member Brendan Holland said a group of students from MAC approached the mountain biking group asking if there was a project they could get involved in as part of the Students in the Community programme. “We were more than happy to get them involved. We have a group of four experienced trail builders guiding the process with up to eight students, so there is a nice ratio of youth and experience. Hopefully we are able to pass on to the next generation techniques for building sustainable trails,” Brendan said. “While we have other maintenance going on

PHOTO: SUPPLIED at the moment, it was felt that the most benefit would come from a re-vamp of Kooza. It gives us the most scope to teach more of the fundamentals of trail-building, from drainage and trail camber through to creating features and flow.” Brendan said the focus was to bring Kooza back to being the go-to flow trail that appeals to all levels of rider, giving beginner riders the opportunity to improve and progress. The team will also aim to improve drainage trouble spots so that the track holds up into the future, moving on to other trails if they complete their work on Kooza. The work, coordinated by head of Bike Wanaka’s tracks sub-committee Jo Guest, began on Sunday July 16 and is currently planned for nine more Sundays. The trail will remain open during this time, and users are encouraged to ride slowly past dig crew pictured and stop for a chat.

The latest glucose monitoring technology, the Abbott’s FreeStyle Libre flash glucose monitoring system, is now available in New Zealand. The New Zealand diabetes community now have the opportunity of accessing the new monitoring system that eliminates the need for routine finger pricks. Until now, people with insulin dependent diabetes tested the level of glucose in their blood by pricking their finger up to five times a day. The new system consists of a small, round sensor — approximately the size of two stacked two dollar coins – worn on the back of the arm, which can be worn for up to 14 days and a reader that displays the person’s glucose profile in a chart. It also displays an eight-hour history and a trend arrow that shows the direction that glucose is heading. University of Otago, Wellington endocrinologist and clinical leader, associate professor Jeremy Krebs said, “For many people with diabetes, the barrier to achieving good control is knowing what their blood glucose levels are.” “Whilst finger prick testing can

give them this information, it is often difficult to do this regularly, particularly in public situations. The new continuous monitoring device has really made a big difference for patients of mine where testing frequently has been the barrier for them. I would hope that in time this technology will become funded by Pharmac.” Diabetes NZ president Deborah Connor appreciates that this is an exciting development in diabetes in New Zealand. “The Type 1 and insulin dependent Type 2 diabetes communities have been waiting with anticipation and excitement for the FreeStyle Libre to become available in NZ. It is a potential game-changer for many who currently rely on multiple daily finger pricks to manage their blood sugar levels. As someone with 20 years of five a day finger pricking under my belt, the ability to monitor blood sugar levels by a simple swipe over a sensor is fantastic in terms of its convenience and discreteness,” Deborah said. Insulin-using New Zealand adults are encouraged to speak to their healthcare professional to determine if the FreeStyle Libre system would be right for them.

Volunteers are needed for the 30th anniversary Warbirds Over Wanaka International Airshow next Easter. The airshow is the largest warbirds airshow in the southern hemisphere and around 300 volunteers will be required. General manager Ed Taylor said, “We couldn’t put on the airshow without volunteers. They come from as far away as the UK and Australia. Many are big fans of Warbirds shows and just want to put something back. It’s a great way to meet new people and be involved and we ensure they have chance to enjoy the show as well.” Airshow volunteer manager, Clare Chapman, said that many people volunteer regularly, but that new people are always needed.

“Warbirds Over Wanaka has a strong history of volunteers returning time and again. However, we always have a need for new volunteers and would love to hear from anyone interested in joining the team.” Clare also said that new software will help make registering as a volunteer easier. “It should also make it a lot simpler for us to match volunteers up with jobs suited to their talents and to give volunteers all the pre-airshow briefings and information needed to ensure they have the best experience ever.” The 30th anniversary Warbirds Over Wanaka International Airshow is being held on March 30, March 31 and April 1, 2018. The key to controlling the spread of pest plant broom in Otago could lie in a tiny mite that is quietly being celebrated by biosecurity buffs. Otago Regional Council’s (ORC) biosecurity team has been testing the effectiveness of the broom gall mite, a tiny mite that can stunt the growth of broom and eventually kill it. ORC director environmental monitoring and operations Scott MacLean said the team released the mite in Clyde and Queensberry in 2012, with progress taking off last summer. “We had an exciting surprise at one of our release sites (Queensberry), where the mite has spread out over 400 metres from the original release site, which is further than expected,” Scott said.

Scott added that the mite only feeds on broom and would not damage any other plants. The mites form galls on the bush and feed in these during spring and summer, spreading on the wind when the weather cools, meaning that infested plants need to be harvested to move the mite to new sites. “It’s a long-term approach and requires patience, but what we’ve seen so far looks promising,” Scott said. More than half of Otago (16,784 square kilometres) has been designated as broom-free, including Wanaka and Cromwell, with land occupiers advised to destroy all broom and gorse on their land. Pictured: Martin King, manager environmental services, and Richard Lord, team leader biosecurity compliance, inspect a broom bush infected with broom gall mite near Cromwell.

OPINION QLDC Mayor Jim Boult focuses on the issues facing Wanaka and surrounds.

J

JIM BOULT

QLDC Mayor

Given the proliferation of signs around the area, I’m sure readers will be aware that voting is currently underway in the local by-election for a new Councillor for the Wanaka Ward of the Queenstown Lakes District. We always hope to see by-elections attract the same level of interest as full elections do. Having checked the level of voter turnout earlier this week - it appears we need to encourage more of you to join the voting. There are three Councillors elected from the Wanaka Ward. That is, three people to represent Wanaka’s interests at the full Council table. It is vitally important therefore, that you elect a Councillor with the skill set, knowledge and empathy for the Upper Clutha area to become the third member of that most important trio. You have four candidates to choose from, all with their own particular attributes.

Currently the district is blessed with a very proactive Council. As Mayor I have received many compliments regarding the progress this Council has made in the district to date. Therefore the best candidate will be the person who has the ability not only to represent the Upper Clutha well, but also the ability to become an effective member of the full Council. The successful candidate needs the skills to take a district-wide view and work with the other elected members. While Wanaka and Arrowtown have elected ward members, when it comes to the Council table, all have the same voting power across all issues that affect the District. So, please don’t let your voting form sit on the kitchen bench until it’s too late. You have until noon on Friday 28 July to cast your vote. I strongly encourage you to exercise your democratic right and have your say. For my part, I very much look forward to working with the new Councillor of your choice.

Resource consent considered D

DANIELLE BUTLER

newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz

Neighbours of The Heights subdivision had their concerns with the proposed development addressed at a resource consent hearing in Wanaka yesterday (Wednesday July 19). Six submitters, most of whom lived or owned houses on Mataraki Place, opposed Universal Developments Limited’s application to create 133 residential lots on the 10.69 hectares of vacant Low Density Residential zoned land adjacent to, and to the south of, Aubrey Road. Earthworks for the development are already underway having previously been approved by Queenstown Lakes District Council. The opposers’ submissions raised concerns with the seven metre maximum building height allocation in the subdivision plans and the worry that they would obstruct lake and mountain views from the nearby Scurr Heights Recreation Reserve walkway. Hazel Donovan, who owns a property on Mataraki Place, said that her main objection was to further bulk earthworks significantly altering or

resetting ground levels in the subdivision, increasing the height limits on the dwellings should the height limits apply to the finished ground rather than the original ground. “The proposed earthworks should be refused, keeping the ground levels at the original height and imposing the necessary height restrictions on the dwellings to ensure nearby residents do not lose their views or access to sunlight,” Hazel said. Counsel for Universal Developments Limited Warwick Goldsmith said the issue raised in most submissions relating to the height of potential future buildings on lots adjoining the eastern boundary of the subdivision was no longer relevant due to the withdrawal of that part of the earthworks. “This walkway has stunning views and most of these submissions say the same thing. The operative plan had seven metre houses built along there and the primary issue was ‘should there be height control imposed on these houses to preserve these views?’ That has been withdrawn and this stretch of land is no longer subject to the application,” Mr Goldsmith said.

Anchor hazard in Lake Hawea S

STAFF REPORTER

editor@thewanakasun.co.nz

An anchor surfacing above the water in Lake Hawea at Scott’s Beach has been identified as a potential hazard to lake users. Guardians of Lake Hawea has warned that people enjoying winter water activities at

Scott’s Beach should be aware of the eastern end anchor, which is beginning to appear above the lake surface due to low lake levels. The anchor is made of heavy concrete with a steel extension and is rising at a shallow angle around nine to ten metres eastward of the last floating buoy, presently underwater, at the eastern end of the buoy line.

Wanaka Ward Voting underway R

Voting to decide who will fill Queenstown Lakes District Council’s (QLDC) empty Wanaka seat is underway. Voters will decide between Eddie Spearing, Jude Battson, Quentin Smith and Wayne Hudson. The seat was vacated by Councillor Ella Lawton

when she was elected to the Otago Regional Council. QLDC began sending out the papers on Thursday July 6 and as of Monday July 17, just over 11 percent of the vote had been returned. The total return is expected to be between 30-40 percent. Voting closes at midday on Friday July 28, with the official declaration to be made on Wednesday August 2.

New trades hub at Central campus

Otago Polytechnic is investing in Central Otago’s educational future with a new trades hub and student accommodation for its Central campus in Cromwell. Consents are currently being obtained prior to construction beginning on the new 600 square metre trades building at Bannockburn Road. It will house automotive and carpentry programmes, classrooms, offices and a common room. There will also be a platform for the construction of a four-bedroom house that the students will build. This is stage one of the proposed campus redevelopment project, which is a move from the current location to a new facility on Otago Polytechnic’s Bannockburn Road site. Head of Central Otago campus, Alex Huffadine, said the polytechnic is very excited about bringing a trades hub to Central Otago. “There’s a real skills shortage in the trades industry. By offering trades-based training here at Central campus, we really hope to solve that problem with well qualified graduates and, at the same time, help our

students into a fantastic career,” Alex said. Otago Polytechnic’s two new trades qualifications (the New Zealand Certificate in Construction Trade Skills (Level 3) (Carpentry) and the New Zealand Certificate in Automotive Engineering (Level 3)) will both be taught from the Trades Hub, which is expected to be finished by the end of term one in 2018. With a shortage of accommodation in Cromwell, Otago Polytechnic has also committed to building self-contained student accommodation at its Molyneux Avenue site. Stage one of the accommodation will include four houses with up to five bedrooms per house. Alex said accommodation is an important part of Otago Polytechnic’s growth in the region. “We hope accommodation onsite removes the barrier of rental shortages in Cromwell. This offers a safe and easy option for our students.” The first phase of student accommodation will be available for students studying in 2018. The construction of both builds is currently out for tender. Students are pictured working on the Charity House in Dunedin.

Frankton v Wanaka AFC 4-2 E

ED RAWLINGS

Football correspondent

Wanaka travelled over the hill to face archrivals Frankton in the COFL semi final. With a much-reshuffled starting line up Wanaka started brightly, but it was Frankton that claimed an early goal against the run of play. Wanaka started to exert lots of pressure on its opponents and was eventually rewarded. Ed Rawlings met Allan Carmichael’s corner with a bullet header to level the scores. This end to end fixture had everything a semi final should and a winner of this match would be hard to choose. Frankton however, managed to snatch another goal to go into the halftime break ahead with an excellent strike from the edge of the box. The second half brought more end to end action and Wanaka pushed

hard for another equaliser. It finally came mid way through the second half. Scott Belsham’s in-swinging corner eluded everyone and nestled into the top corner of the net to bring the scores level once more and set up a grandstand finish. With the clock running down the game seemed destined for extra time to separate these two evenly matched teams. With less than 10 minutes left Frankton caught Wanaka on a counter attack and scored a third to land a sucker punch on its rivals. With a place in the final at stake Wanaka went all out on attack to try and draw level again. This left Wanaka vulnerable to another counter attack and the last nail in the coffin came as Frankton booked its place in this week’s final with a fourth and final goal to win 4-2. Winger Paul Hodgson is pictured baring down on goal in the recent match against Lakes United.

Wanaka’s ski and snowboarding youth dominated the results tables at Cardrona’s first youth event of the season, Piki Maunga Rangatahi (Big Mountain Youth) competition, on Sunday July 16. More than 30 of the town’s young snow sporting talent took to the slopes in the single day youth freeride competition against 57 competitors from across New Zealand and Australia. Organiser Graham Dunbar said this was the second year the event had run and they were very happy with a 41 percent increase in competitors this year. “The older kids raised the bar, with a few shining stars coming through in the younger division to look out for,” Graham said. “The weather looked threatening in the morning but held out and the basin where the competition was held had good visibility all day even when cloud hung around in other places.” Each free ski and snowboard run was judged by Sam Smoothy, Sergi Garcia Diaz and Alphie

Bourdeau, with scores based on variety, difficulty and execution. Seven-year-olds Zora Legnavsky and Olivia Hein were two of three competitors in the eight and under ski girls category, ranking second and third, while eight-year-old Logan Millar topped the eight and under ski boys. Nine-year-old Sylvia Trotter, ten-year-old Lucia Georgalli and nine-year-old Jalen Carleton, all of Wanaka, were the only representatives in the nine and ten years ski and snowboard girls categories and snowboard boys category. The town reigned over the 11 and 12 years snowboard boys categories, with six of the seven competitors from Wanaka, won by 11-year-old Cam Melville Ives. Eleven-year-old Fin Melville Ives won the 11 and 12 years ski boys, while Hawea Flat’s Taane Bayce-Horsley came second. Wanaka won three of four 13 and 14 categories, with 13-year-old Luca Harrington and 12-year-old Zephyr Lovelock topping the ski and snowboard boys categories, while 14-year-old Molly Thomsson came top of the ski girls.
