RESPECT ‘THAT
’
After five months being high and dry, the infamous Wanaka Tree now has wet feet again, much to the delight of visiting tourists. Lake Wanaka’s level now sits at just over 276.8 metres. Queenstown Lakes District Council have called for people to respect the tree and refrain from climbing on it and be satisfied with sustainable and tree-friendly photos from afar. Willow wood is particularly fragile and breaks easily and the bark is thin and can be easily crushed or dislodged from the tree, damaging it. Any damage to the bark layer results in the wood becoming exposed to fungus and insects which could end in the eventual demise of the tree. The tree started life as a fence post around 78 years ago as part of a fence line and has determinedly grown over the years, becoming a famous photographic destination for tourists over recent years.

nbound flights were diverted on Tuesday, August 15 at Queenstown Airport following a light aircraft crash on take-off. Four passengers were on board the Cessna 177b, including the pilot. An ambulance crew attended the scene, transporting all passengers to hospital for further observation, one with a suspected ankle injury. All were later released. Queenstown Airport Corporation communications officer Jen Andrews confirmed the airport’s emergency response plan was immediately activated and Rescue Fire Service attended the scene.
Following Police and Civil Aviation Authority attendance, the aircraft was removed from the airfield and the runway was inspected prior to operations re-commencing at 10:50am. Ten flights were affected with the airlines rescheduling flights. Civil Aviation Authority senior communications officer Philippa Lagan said the Civil Aviation Authority has opened an investigation into the emergency landing and that it appeared the aircraft experienced engine failure after taking off. “Our safety investigators are in the early stages of gathering information – talking to police, preparing to talk to the pilot, passengers and witnesses,” Philippa said. She was unable to say how long the investigation was likely to take.

Missing French skier Tom Gratadour has been found safe after a day-long search in the mountains to the west of Lake Wanaka. The world junior freestyle champion had failed to return as scheduled Tuesday from a solo back-country ski touring trip. “We are delighted to have found him uninjured,” Wanaka Police search and rescue coordinator Sergeant Aaron Nicholson said. “With the weather deteriorating rapidly and more snow expected,

A $375,000 share of $44 million announced by the government last week and awarded to Te Kakano Aotearoa Trust has been hailed as a ‘shot in the arm’ for the Upper Clutha community, amongst some criticism of the trust’s approach. Environment Minister Nick Smith made the announcement on Tuesday, August 8, stating that Lake Wanaka was one of the ten largest water bodies to benefit from the investment. The grants are the first tranche of funding from the $100 million Freshwater Improvement Fund announced last year and funding deeds have been negotiated with the successful applicants, including Te Kakano. The $375,000 has been awarded to Te Kakano to develop a community management plan for the lake, although full details cannot be released until the trust’s reframed application for the funding has been granted in around a month’s time. Aquatic ecologist Laurel Teirney, who held a meeting last week to discuss grassroots approaches to looking after the lake, has criticised Te Kakano’s approach for being “top-down” and not involving the community. Te Kakano’s community liaison and development officer Megan Williams said that although Te Kakano and the Upper Clutha Water Group had been prevented from commenting until the application was officially granted, there were plans
within it for grassroots, community decision-making and involvement. “Te Kakano is well known for our community approach and this will continue for this project,” Megan said. Minister Smith said that the priority for the investment had been projects that would contribute towards the government’s goals of improving swimmability and the ecological health of waterways. “It will fund the fencing of waterways from farm animals, planting along streams, development of wetlands, sewage reticulation and water storage to increase minimum flows.” “There are also initiatives in the package to eradicate water weeds, remove pest fish and to retire marginal land adjacent to waterways,” Dr Smith said. Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean said, “concerns about lake snow, in both Lakes Wanaka and Hawea have been ongoing, along with potential links to nutrient run-off and land use change. The project, which is a partnership with the Otago Regional and the Queenstown Lakes District Councils, will allow those issues to be explored in more detail.” “The Upper Clutha community cares passionately about Lake Wanaka and is determined to promote its ecological health for the benefit of locals and visitors like. This funding will be a huge boost in confidence for the community as it works to preserve this precious waterway for the future,” Ms Dean said.

Wanaka Airport management has appointed Daniel Debono as operations manager following an Australasia-wide recruitment process. An experienced airport and aviation professional, Daniel will join the Wanaka Airport team in early 2018. He has worked in the aviation industry his whole career and has a solid understanding of general aviation, airport infrastructure, operations, the Civil Aviation Act, associated Civil Aviation Rules and Health and Safety Legislation. Originally from Dunedin, Daniel has worked and holidayed in Queenstown and Wanaka for many years after he graduated from Massey University with a Bachelor of Aviation Management. He initially joined the Queenstown Airport team in 2006 and after stints in both airside and operations roles, he joined Wellington Airport as manager airfield and airport fire service in 2011. Daniel will leave his current role as general manager infrastructure and service delivery at Dunedin Airport later this year and join the Wanaka Airport team in early January 2018. Queenstown Airport general manager operations and safety Mike Clay said, “Daniel has a broad aviation skillset and has spent his entire working life in aviation. Luckily for us the call of Central Otago was too strong and we are very fortunate to have Daniel on-board to lead the team in Wanaka,” Mike said. “Daniel’s extensive knowledge of general and scheduled aviation operations and airport infrastructure, plus his personality and leadership

it could well have been a different outcome.” The search started on Wednesday after the 18 year-old from Lyon failed to return to Wanaka by late Tuesday. Four teams were deployed during the day. A helicopter search found ski touring tracks above the Minaret Burn and he was located walking out to his car. “This is a good outcome, but we would want to emphasise that if you’re going into the back country we would strongly urge you to carry a personal locator beacon,” Sergeant Nicholson said.
Food trailers under fire D
DANIELLE BUTLER
newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz
Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) has come under fire for its part in creating an ‘unlevel playing field’ for Wanaka’s food outlets and restaurants. A local restaurant owner, who wished to remain anonymous, told the Wanaka Sun that they didn’t feel the amount of food trailers in the town was fair to food businesses operating from fixed premises. “The biggest issue is that they (food trailers) don’t get to compete on a level playing field. They’re paying nominal rent, not making contributions to QLDC in terms of paying rates, not paying any contributions to Lake Wanaka Tourism for the promotion of the town, which tenants do, and they get to use the town’s facilities,” the restaurant owner said. “All tenants have to provide toilets and the upkeep of them, but the food trailers use the town’s public toilets which they make no contribution to, and this puts a demand on public facilities.” The restaurant owner also said that customers parking in public spaces and pulling up outside food trailers didn’t help the town’s parking problems. “This town has huge problems in terms of traffic flows and parking and these trailers are not assisting the
town one iota,” they said. QLDC’s web and digital communications advisor Jimmy Sygrove said that the Commerce Act prevents the council from getting involved with business competition. “Food businesses must be registered and operate a safe system of food preparation under the Food Act. If they are operating on private land as a temporary activity, no other permits are necessarily needed,” Jimmy said. “If they want to operate on public land, a permit is needed which is available at no cost but depending on where it is, could be a challenge to obtain.” The restaurant owner said that they did not believe that the council could claim it doesn’t play a part in business competition. “They do play a part because they issue the food licences to these caravans, which automatically creates competition and decides the market-place, diluting it for building tenants,” they said. The restaurant owner said that if food trailers were to be allowed to operate, they should have to provide facilities such as toilets for their customers. “If you’re going to have five food trailers on a block of land then there should be toilet facilities, and if they cannot provide that then they shouldn’t get a food permit.”

1080 drop delay only temporary CBD vandalism concern grows D

A planned 1080 drop in Luggate that was due to take place last week has only been postponed temporarily, despite earlier reports on social media that it had been permanently cancelled. Luggate residents received letters dated August 9, informing them that the Alice Burn aerial operation had been indefinitely postponed, after it was found that the water source to two homes was in the drop zone. Residents informed the Operational Solutions for Primary Industries (OSPRI), which is conducting the operation, that this was the case after receiving letters dated July on Thursday August 3 and Friday August 4, telling them that the drop would commence within seven days. OSPRI’s chief operating officer, Matthew Hall, said that consultation began in January 2017 between the Department of Conservation, landholders in the proposed operational area and Public Health South. “However, during these discussions no parties

were aware that the public was using the water reservoir,” Matthew said. “Despite the initial steps of our stakeholder engagement not revealing public use of the reservoir it is important that the latter stages of our consultation process ensured the local community had the opportunity to provide feedback.” Matthew added that now the operation had been postponed, OSPRI would be in contact with local residents to address questions about the future of the operation and any concerns about impacts on private water supplies downstream.

Business owners have expressed concern at ongoing vandalism within the town centre. Last weekend (Friday August 4 to Sunday August 6), Wanaka Police reported a couple of incidents in the town, including a beer bottle being thrown through a pharmacy window. Constable Aubury Martin added that police had also dealt with an incident in which two poolside loungers had been thrown onto the cover of an outside pool at Lakeside Apartments, damaging it. Manager of Shinaburo, Monica Huang, said that on the morning of Monday August 7, she had noticed vandalism to the restaurant’s outdoor sign, probably caused by a hard object being thrown at it. Although it was the first time anything had been broken at the restaurant, Monica said that it was not the first time the team had experienced trouble, with constant rubbish, bottles and theft of some of the
restaurant’s outdoor fixtures. “It is so bad. Every Monday we have to check everything outside to make sure it is alright,” Monica said. “We always see a lot of people (on Ardmore Street) drinking and with bottles. I think more CCTV and better street lighting in certain areas would help.” Queenstown Lakes District Council’s web and digital communications advisor, Jimmy Sygrove, said that there were currently ten cameras in various locations in Wanaka, and that new installations in progress were outside the library and the public toilets by the Dinosaur Park. “All CCTV in Wanaka CBD is used for crime prevention and is monitored by police.” “A submission has been made in the 2018/28 Long Term Plan for further installations and upgrades in Wanaka, as well as looking at new technology including number plate recognition for vehicles entering the district and CCTV for infringements, for example, disability parks,” Jimmy said.

They have two kitchen hobs instead of four, a slimmed-down toaster and a tiny kettle. The kitchen’s extractor fan is a vent, with the motor hidden under the floor. New Zealand Post customers will see a change to how they can send priority mail from January 1, 2018. Following a review of its priority mail network the FastPost service will no longer be available from this date. Customers will be able to use courier products as an alternative way for sending their priority mail and NZ Post acknowledged that this is a big change for those who currently use FastPost. Currently only one percent of all mail is sent using this service and during the last year it has declined by 23 percent. The amount of all letter volumes
continues to decline significantly, at a rate of approximately 60 million items a year and despite ongoing cost reductions, NZ Post said this change is necessary. “We are committed to providing priority services to our customers. Standard Post remains unaffected,” a spokesperson said. For business customers, a new priority mail service will be available in and between Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. “New Zealand Post will continue to seek ways to improve efficiency and make cost savings to maintain a commercially viable postal network, and to give its customers the best possible service.”

When you hear about a house the size of a garage, you can’t help but form ideas before you see it. But if you visit Will and Jennie Croxford’s tiny house, you might just find many of those preconceptions are way off the mark. As you walk into the house, which at just under 30 square metres is the size of a single garage, albeit on two floors, the first thing that strikes you is the amount of space they have. There is a large living room and an open plan kitchen with ample room for preparing food. Upstairs, the bedroom stretches halfway across the property’s length, leaving plenty of room for a double bed, bedside tables and storage space for clothes. The tiny house idea came on one of their many cycling trips. “Cycle tourists get obsessed with shedding weight. They even chop the handles off their toothbrushes. We biked from Melbourne to Brisbane and you go around the shops and can’t buy anything because you can’t carry it,” Will explained. “That got us thinking that we don’t need a spare bedroom when someone comes to stay. We had 20 acres in our last property, but did we need it?” You might expect them to be living without many home comforts. Yet there are two sofas, a big television, a coffee table, a washing machine and a dishwasher. The bathroom is no smaller than most en suites I’ve seen. “People like to surround themselves with their stuff, but it’s easy to be minimalist these days. The crew at Aspiring Beginnings Early Learning Centre celebrated the first stage of its new playscape with morning tea on Tuesday, August 15. Staff, committee members and kids got together to mark the completion of stage one of the playscape, which has two more stages to go before it is fully finished. Aspiring Beginnings committee member, Natalie Astin, said that money raised from grants and fundraising over the last two years had got the playscape to the stage it was at so far, with the committee planning to reach out to local businesses to
give the fundraising its final boost. “The kids are so inspired by what is happening and I just love the way it has grown. The kids are really excited,” Natalie said. Kaho Teaching Team staff member, Nick Cane, said that the project was expected to be complete by the summer. “This space has been a huge asset but really needed developing. This year’s Ignite Wanaka Business Awards is now open for entry giving Wanaka’s flourishing business community another opportunity to celebrate success. The awards is run in partnership with Milford Asset Management and this year two new categories and a new convenor of the independent judging panel have been added. Wanaka resident Bill Day, founder of multi-million-dollar business Seaworks and a past winner of Ernst & Young’s New Zealand Entrepreneur of the Year – is the new convenor of judges. Bill said he’s excited to lead the independent judging panel for the 2017 awards and looks forward to reading entries packed with inspiration and innovation. “What’s so special about this place is that people want to live in Wanaka because it’s the best place in the world – and because they’re so determined to be here, they actively search for ways to enable them to stay here. That means they come up with some amazing solutions and translate that into business,” he explains.

Judges will be looking for businesses demonstrating passion as well as proving they’re doing something different to their competitors in a way that creates value. Also new for this year is the Outstanding in Sustainability category, sponsored by Queenstown and Wanaka Airports, plus a People’s Choice Award – an award voted for by the entire Wanaka community. Details about the People’s Choice Award will be released in the coming weeks. Ignite Wanaka chairman Alistair King says the Chamber is excited to facilitate such an important occasion for the local business community. “We were overwhelmed by the great feedback from last year. Celebrating success of businesses in Wanaka is a key part of what Ignite Wanaka does. We want to continue the excitement and momentum gained from last year and give the many other businesses who couldn’t enter last year the opportunity to enter again. After this year the awards will be held every two years, so this is people’s last chance to enter until 2019,” Alistair said. There is no cost to enter the awards. All entries are confidential and only viewed by the independent judging panel. Further details are available here.

Over 250 new businesses have started up in Wanaka in three years, according to new statistics. The figures from Statistics New Zealand show that 255 new businesses were set up between February 2013 and February 2016, with 93 being established in the final 12 months alone. They involved a range of industries, from construction and manufacturing to accommodation, food and recreation services. Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean said it reflects a strong and growing local economy that is showing no signs of slowing. “This growth is phenomenal and reinforces the fact that people want to live and work in Wanaka and that distance is not an impediment. I’m excited for Wanaka and I’m enthusiastic for the entrepreneurs who are showing courage and innovation in developing new businesses here”, Jacqui said. “It’s obvious that the massive
growth in tourism has been a catalyst for the establishment of many of these businesses, with the need for more housing resulting from that.” The news comes as the government also announced it is spending $130 million to bring faster internet to Otago and Southland. Jacqui said it would not only ensure faster internet speeds and better connectivity, but also attract even more business to Wanaka. Jacqui said, “People are already reaping the benefits of this spend with thousands more households and businesses across the region now able to enjoy improved internet access and faster speeds.” “Chorus tells me that they are scheduled to start the fibre build in Wanaka in October next year, allowing businesses and homeowners across the district access to the latest in fast broadband.” Wanaka is also set to benefit from $19 million of government funding for a new primary school and more classrooms at Mount Aspiring College.

Scarlett Norman, 13, was selected from over 130 year eight students to win the award, which recognises leadership, working well with peers and carrying out activities in their school, community or home. Scarlett’s teacher Lesley Baynes said she was an exceptional student who was capable of achieving great things. “People who know her are aware of her intellectual acumen, dancing abilities, thoughtfulness, strong work ethic and leadership style which communicates enthusiasm and ‘attitude’. That quick wit, ready smile and willingness to pick up yet another new challenge sets her apart. Art-lovers will have the chance to add to their collections and raise money for a local pre-school next month. Wanaka Pre-school will hold its annual art auction at The Venue on Cardrona Valley Road and attendees will be able to bid on over 100 new pieces from local artists. Janet Lothian, chair of the pre-school’s Governance Committee, said it was a crucial event for the pre-school. “It’s hugely important to us because we are non-profit and community-based. We try and keep our fees low and we are having our playground redeveloped, so the money raised will go towards that. We also try to innovate, so we’re looking at
buying solar panels for the school,” Janet said. “We have a couple of fundraisers a year, but this is the major one and usually raises around $14,000.” There will be a live and a silent auction for the various art pieces on the night, with nibbles included in the ticket price. Around 50 local artists will contribute and the money raised by individual pieces will go towards supporting both the artist and the pre-school. The Wanaka Pre-school art auction is on Friday September 1. Advance ticket holders can view the pieces from 4pm and the main event begins at 6pm. Tickets are available at the Wanaka Pre-school, 106 Tenby Street and from Wonder Room, 80 Ardmore Street, priced at $25 in advance or $30 on the door. Pictured is “Fishing Reflections” by Kym Beaton.

Otago Regional Council (ORC) chairman Stephen Woodhead announced today that a public recruitment process will be followed to appoint the council’s chief executive for the five-year period starting this November when the term of the incumbent chief executive, Peter Bodeker, comes to an end. Stephen said that under the Local Government Act, it is open to a council to offer a sitting chief executive a two-year extension at the end of their
initial five-year term. “However, Mr Bodeker has advised that he does not seek to have the council consider that option. Rather, he wishes to have the opportunity to be considered for a further five-year term, and has advised the council that he will be an applicant in the competitive appointment process which the legislation requires us to follow,” Stephen said. The ORC will be working through the process over the next three months with a view to having a chief executive in place from the end of Peter Bodeker’s current term.

MAC enters Debate Championship R
ROB WHITE
journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz
Mount Aspiring College (MAC) has entered two teams in the 2017 Central Otago Schools’ Debating Championship. A senior and a junior MAC team will face-off against other schools from the area, including Dunstan High School, Wakatipu High School and Cromwell College in the event, which is organised by The Message, a public advocacy company, and the Cromwell Rotary Club. MAC teacher Kristine Logan said, “Distance can be a barrier to attending these competitions, so it is a wonderful opportunity to take part in a regional competition that is so accessible. We are grateful to be invited and know that the students will receive valuable input from the coaches, adjudicators and other students.” Debaters, coaches and teachers will have the chance to hone their skills in advance at a
debating seminar this Friday (August 18) at Cromwell College. It will be run by former NZ Universities and New Zealand debating captain Michael Laws, who believes the benefits of debating will go far beyond a student’s time at school. “The skills that students learn from debating prepare them for many professional careers and enhance their chances, from politics to broadcasting, from the law to public relations, from environmental advocacy to entertainment. Debating really does give students an amazing head start,” Michael said. MAC will be represented by Luke Burke, Tristan Weastell, Jake Nicholson and Joe Strawson in the seniors and Maddy Thompson, Nicole Meyer and Lucy Fenton in the juniors. The Central Otago School’s Debating Tournament will be held on Sunday August 27 at Cromwell College. The finals will be held the following day at the Cromwell Rotary Club.
OPINION QLDC Mayor Jim Boult focuses on the issues facing Wanaka and surrounds. Sponsored by

JIM BOULT
QLDC Mayor
My topic this week is the important part that volunteers play in our district. I suspect there aren’t too many households in the Queenstown Lakes District that don’t contain a volunteer or two of some description contributing to the greater good. A large part of what happens in our area is a result of our unpaid weekend warriors turning out for everything from school sports events, to hobbies, charities (in particular the challenge of fundraising), and even to the essential services provided by volunteer fire brigades, Search and Rescue and St John ambulance service. I could probably fill this entire newspaper by listing the organisations which benefit from the many generous volunteers in our district. The harsh reality here is that most of our community and sports activities, and emergency services (with the exception of the Police), would simply not happen if it wasn’t for the good folk of our district who put themselves out, often several times a week, to do their bit for their community. Sometimes the activities of these groups are very obvious, such as the emergency services, other times they’re virtually invisible. The purpose of my column therefore, is to give
a giant and general thank you to everyone in the community who gives their time to the service of others, whatever realm that be in. I note that the Trustpower Community Award nominations are now open until Friday August 25. I commend those of you who know groups or individuals doing something special to make sure they are nominated for these prestigious awards. In talking about volunteers, I know that our local Wanaka Ward Councillors and Community Board members do receive financial benefit for their involvement, however I suspect if you applied this as a per-hour rate, for the amount of time they put in they would be amongst the lowest paid people in the district. Our Ward Councillors and Community Board members certainly don’t do it for the money. They do it because they want to make a real and valuable contribution. With Quentin Smith’s election to QLDC, a further space has opened on the Wanaka Community Board. Nominations close for this on Thursday September 7, and I commend anybody who is seriously interested in having a say in the way your community is run, to consider putting yourself forward. Details of the Trustpower Community Awards can be found at www.trustpower.co.nz/ communityawards

COMMUNITY NETWORKS
Coordinating emergency responses KATE MURRAY Community Networks Last week I attended a training course on how we can best respond in an emergency or an event such as a flooding. This included information about how to have a coordinated response across agencies. In my role here at Community Networks I have been taking a lead in how we would respond to meet the welfare needs of the community. There is a group of very passionate volunteers who meet regularly to establish the best way of setting up a civil defence centre. This includes considering how we would meet our basic needs such as access to safe water, sanitation, food and warmth. It was a good reminder to have a think about how well we would be set up at home – beyond having a torch and packet of chocolate biscuits in an otherwise empty bin in the garage. Some of the key things to think about include; Staying informed - In an emergency use the QLDC website to stay informed, or listen to your local radio stations (here is where those batteries come in handy!) Have a conversation about where you would meet your family/friends if you are unable to
get home. Connecting with your neighbours is a great start. Know where our civil defence centres are. Look on the QLDC website for this information; http://www.qldc.govt.nz/services/ emergency-management/civil-defence-centres/ We need to be self-sufficient for at least three days. Some of the things to include in your survival kit are canned or dried food, a primus or gas BBQ to cook on, torches (with the spare batteries), first aid kits, battery powered or wind-up radio, clothing and cash. Its also helpful to think about any other unique needs your family may have and your pets! And of course, we need water (enough for three litres per day per adult) for drinking. Tips for storing drinking water: Fill each bottle with tap water until it overflows and add five drops of household bleach per litre of water. (Do not drink for at least 30 minutes after disinfecting). Make sure there are no air gaps and place the lids on tightly. Label each bottle with the dates of when they were filled. Check them every 12 months. If the water is not clear, throw it out and refill. So there are a few things to think about (and organise), however they are easy to get sorted.

Creative excellence for designer

A Wanaka designer has been recognised for ‘creative excellence’ with three awards at an industry conference in Sydney last weekend (August 10 to August 13). Hayley Shaw was awarded with the NZ National Kitchen and Bathroom (NKBA) Creative Excellence Kitchen Award, the Southern Regional Award and the Peer Recognition Award for her pictured project. Hayley’s brief for the project was to morph an oversized hangar, built to house a classic car collection, into a kitchen living space, with inspiration taken from rustic beams, oversized doors and chunky steel hardware. Hayley said that the biggest challenge was to ensure the kitchen turned the empty hangar into a homely feel that the clients would adore for years
to come. “It felt like a bit of a blur when I kept getting called up to the stage and awarded. I’m quite new to the industry, I’ve been in it for just over five years and having these awards behind me gives me the confidence that I have got a good vision and am heading in the right direction,” Hayley said. NKBA executive officer Suzie Rees said it was fantastic for the industry to see young designers winning awards, with all three of Hayley’s awards highly aspired to. “The Peer Recognition Award was a new award and all the designers and designer/manufacturer members who attended the conference were eligible to vote,” Suzie said. “Hayley’s entry was voted the favourite by her peers and some of the comments from the judges were about interesting use of material, well-crafted, meticulous steel manufacturing and a creative use of materials and space.”

An entrepreneurial Wanaka teenager has been chosen for an exclusive group of students travelling to San Francisco in October to see global businesses at work. Year 13 Mount Aspiring College student, Bonnie Crawshaw-McClean, competed alongside 63 others from across the country at the Young Enterprise Entrepreneurs in Action weekend, held at Massey University in Wellington from Friday August 4 to Sunday August 6. In teams and as an individual, Bonnie spent the weekend completing a series of high-pressured business tasks, which earnt her a place on a trip to Silicon Valley alongside four others. Bonnie said she was incredibly
stoked and happy to be taking the trip, where she would get to see how businesses such as Apple and Google operate. “The weekend proved to be an exhausting, exhilarating experience which taught me so much about teamwork, business planning and innovation, and learning to take every opportunity that I could to further myself and my teammates,” Bonnie said. Young Enterprise chief executive Terry Shubkin said the trip was intended to give young people a global perspective on business and introduce them to career possibilities for the future. Fudge funds Japan trip D

Three school students are raising money for their trip to Japan by making and selling fudge at Wanaka’s Artisan Market. Mount Aspiring College (MAC) students Sam Bastion, Liam Beaton and Dara Beattie-Johnson are heading to Japan later this year on a school exchange trip and came up with the idea of fundraising with fudge. Dara’s mother, Sharon Beattie, said that the trio have been working hard on not only their fudge, pictured, but also their Japanese language skills, for when they go to Sosei High School in Sapporo. “Sosei High School is MAC’s exchange sister school in the snowy north of Japan, and they’ll be living there for ten weeks over our summer. Later, Wanaka will host Sosei students in return, but in the meantime you’ll find them peddling their

Playball returns to Wanaka R

Children will have the chance to improve their sports and development skills as Playball comes back to Wanaka. Playball is returning after a three year absence to offer hour-long coaching classes to groups of children aged from two to nine years old. New owner Sarah Loader, who was born and raised in Wanaka, said the aim of the classes will be to boost children’s skills, while getting them to have fun at the same time. “Playball gives kids the opportunity to get out of the house and learn new skills in a fun environment. Our coaches encourage the kids to run around and enjoy themselves and at the same time they are developing key skills like hand-eye co-or-
dination,” Sarah said. Each session will be age-specific, with each one taking into account the different skills of the children who attend. They include a range of different games devised specifically for children and offer parents the chance to get involved as well. Playball classes run every week for a whole term and Sarah said it offers the chance to make new friends as the term progresses. “As they see each other every week and work in teams to do the various tasks set by the coach, we see the kids making really good friendships and they look forward to seeing each other every week. This helps them to develop their team skills and also increases their confidence,” Sarah said. For more information or a free trial, visit www. playballcentralotago.com or email Sarah on centralotago@playball.co.nz.

The Wanaka Recreation Centre will play host to the fourth Festival of Sport and Recreation next month. The event is run by the Upper Clutha Sports Community (UCSC) and aims to inform, promote and celebrate the range of sport and recreational activities on offer to people of all ages in Wanaka. UCSC trustee Diana Schikker said the festival is designed to get everyone to join in and she hopes it will be a long-term event. “We want to get people to participate and the festival is a one-stop shop. It’s everything that keeps us physically and mentally active. “If you are new to town or have been here a long time, you can see what’s on offer.” The festival will give attendees the chance to try a range of sports and activities in one place. There will be over 30 booths to visit indoors
and attendees will get the chance to have a go at various sports, such as tennis with oversized racquets. Dance Wanaka will also be performing some of its routines, while the Bridge Club and Tramping Club will also be in attendance. Outside there will be a range of competitions, including tug of war, 12 inch Subway sandwich eating and a ‘dye run’ organised by Kahu Youth, which will see contestants navigate a course while trying to avoid the coloured powder being thrown at them. There will also be a bouncy castle and skill games for children, plus a range of food stalls. The Festival of Sport and Recreation will run from 9am to 1pm on Saturday September 23rd (General Election day). Anyone interested in running a display booth or hosting an activity can call Diana Schikker 0274 680048 or Bronwyn Coers 0274 733141. Pictured is a dance demonstration at last year’s event.

Five Mount Aspiring College students joined hundreds of multi-sport athletes to tackle the 24th Torpedo7 Peak to Peak last Saturday, August 12. The team came second in its age division and thirteenth overall in the 44km adventure race, starting on top of the Remarkables. Competitors cycled 17km down the Remarkables access road, then paddled 7km on Lake Wakatipu to Queenstown, before running 9km to Arthurs Point. The final leg saw competitors cycling 9km up to the Coronet Peak base, finishing on the snow.
Team member, Emily Heath, said that the team were really keen to compete again next year. “We all had a really fun day out there on the course, each doing our own disciplines and felt really strong together as a team,” Emily said. Organisers said that the school teams field was strong this year, with seven teams contesting the event. “High finishes in the boys and girls teams showed that the future of multi-sport is in good hands,” a race spokesperson said. New Zealand’s Porteous brothers dominated the men’s ski field and battled hard for the top qualifying spot in the halfpipe competition at the Australia New Zealand Cup (ANC) at Cardrona Alpine Resort on Tuesday August 15. Miguel threw down the first doubles of the day, showing some of the class that saw him finish on the X Games podium earlier in the year. However, younger brother Nico’s combination of technical tricks - including a switch combo on his two final hits - and clean execution, saw him earn the highest qualifying score. The battle of the Porteous brothers never eventuated in men’s ski finals with Miguel pushing hard on his first hit, landing too deep and crashing out on both runs.
While “not really focusing on results and using today as a good warm up for the Winter Games,” Nico’s highly technical first run was easily enough for the win. His left 1080 with seatbelt grab into switch right nine tailgrab into switch left 1080 at the bottom of the pipe gave spectators a small taste of what Winter Games NZ World Cup competition might look like. Spectators were also treated to a good showdown for second, third and fourth places with all three skiers delivering multiple off-axis spins in both directions and boosting well out of the pipe. Japan’s Hiroo Wada took out second place, rewarded for a clean run with pronounced grabs. Switzerland’s Briguet Robin finished third. Keita Takahasi just missed out on the podium, finishing fourth. Finals for the slopestyle events will be held today (Thursday August 17). Photo: Nico Porteous in action.

Fifteen-year-old Alice Robinson (pictured centre) claimed both the women’s Slalom and Giant Slalom titles at the New Zealand Alpine National Championships in Queenstown last week with Adam Barwood of Queenstown successfully defending his Slalom title. Alice had a solid start to the day, in her first run skiing from bib 49 into fourth place, 0.97s behind race leader Bettina Schneeberger (SUI). Canada-based Kiwi Georgia Willinger was the second fastest NZ woman, starting in bib 14 and sitting in sixth place after “a fun” first run. Piera Hudson (Havelock North/Wanaka) was close behind, in seventh. Alice impressed the judges in run two, with another strong run to claim her second national title as well as pushing through into third for a spot on the overall podium. “I wasn’t expecting to win the Slalom title, I’ve been more focused on training GS,” she said. “I’m pretty excited, it’s a good bonus.” THURSDAY 17.08.17 - WEDNESDAY 23.08.17
NZ’s Piera Hudson finished fifth overall, second on the national podium, with Georgia Bushell (Christchurch) third fastest of the Kiwis. Looking to defend his championship title, Adam Barwood (Queenstown) skied a safe first run, putting him into fourth place overall and 1.07s behind Germany’s Julian Rauchfuss. Teammate Willis Feasey (Twizel) found himself in the back seat just before the hairpins and skied out of the course, recording a DNF. Sam Andrews (Wanaka) skied a solid first run to make the top 30 flip from a start number of 62. Looking to ski a more aggressive second run, Adam Barwood closed the gap to the lead to finish just 0.28s behind race winner Krystof Kryzl (CZE) and to defend his national championship title, finishing fifth overall. “I’m really happy to keep the title,” said Adam. “After missing out on the GS on Monday, it’s a bit of a relief. The result should help improve my world ranking as well.” Sam Andrews was the second fastest New Zealander, with Ben Loeffen-Gallagher also stepping onto the national podium in third.
