Wanaka petition to reinstate funding for a Central and South Otago lactation consultant has gathered almost 2500 signatures. Local mums Kate Young and Iona Bentley have been the driving force behind the online petition, which was kick-started in response to funding for a WellSouth local community lactation consultant coming to an end in September. “This vital service was providing free expert breastfeeding help to mothers in the region, and without it new mums from our region who are struggling will have to travel to Dunedin for help,” Iona said. “The loss of the community lactation consultant for the region could lead to a decrease in breast-fed babies as well as potentially putting new mothers at risk of postnatal depression.” Kate said that while a lactation consultant remained at Wanaka’s Plunket Rooms, appointments were infrequent and not enough for a growing community.

Southern DHB’s executive director, strategy, primary and community directorate Lisa Gestro said that WellSouth would continue to support Southern whanau to achieve their breastfeeding goals with its breastfeeding peer support programme, run through its bulk funding from the DHB. Lisa added that programmes and resources such as LaLeche League breastfeeding support groups, breastfeeding support Otago and Southland, drop-in centres and peer support groups still existed in the Southern district. Mothers supporting the petition, however, believe that the services that remain on offer are no substitute for a local lactation consultant. One mother who signed the petition said, “I was incredibly lucky to have the support of Jo Guest (lactation consultant) when I became a firsttime mother in 2016”. Continued on page 2

Champions of the kitchen WHITE R ROB journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz Wanaka’s Chris and Bex Wright have won My Kitchen Rules New Zealand (MKR NZ) and $100,000 in prize money. Team Wright beat arch rivals Heather and Mitch in Monday’s Grand Final to claim the title, scoring 52 out of 60 to win by five points. “We thought we deserved to win and it was quite close. The amount of support we have had, I feel like we would have disappointed them if we didn’t win. It’s great you’re making everyone else happy,” said Chris. The Grand Final was hosted at Auckland’s Gusto

at the Grand and saw the teams tasked with cooking a four course meal, including an entrée, fish course, meat course and dessert for 20 people. There was also added pressure, with an open plan kitchen and top New Zealand chefs Sean Connolly, Nadia Lim, Ray McVinnie and Tom Hishon joining presenters Pete Evans and Manu Feildel on the judging panel. The Wrights got quickly into their rhythm, with duck salad as their entree followed by blue cod, butter bean and cauliflower croquettes for their fish dish. For main, they took a bold step by cooking gnocchi and oxtail ragu, an almost carbon copy of an offering early in the series which backfired badly and cost them top spot on the leaderboard. Feedback on Emergency Mobile Alert TURNBULL G GLENDA editor@thewanakasun.co.nz

When contacted about this concern Civil Defence commented, “The issue relates mostly to iPhones. The MCDEM is interested to hear feedback about the test and people are welcome to let us know their thoughts.” GNS Science senior scientist, risk and society department Dr Graham Leonard said, “The activation of cell broadcast technology (called Emergency Mobile Alert here) is a landmark change for public warnings in New Zealand. “It requires no sign-up, purchase, download or installation and goes to all compatible phones at virtually the same time. This gets over congestion seen with SMS text messages. As new phones are purchased, the proportion that receive the alert will grow over coming years – mine did not, but I will be looking closely at the next phone I get. “The key thing for warnings that need to go to people as soon as possible, like tsunami alerts, is that they give a heads up and also a clear message. Research shows this increases the speed and proportion of people who take protective action.” Feedback can be posted at w w w. c i v i l d e f e n c e . g o v t . n z / emergencymobilealertfeedback

After a nationwide test of their new Emergency Mobile Alert on Sunday, November 26, the Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management (MCDEM) are asking the public for feedback. The mobile alert would have appeared automatically on your phone’s screen, accompanied by a unique warning sound. In future, the alert will be used by authorised emergency agencies (MCDEM, Ministry of Health, New Zealand Police, Fire and Emergency New Zealand, Ministry for Primary Industries, Local Civil Defence groups) to send messages to the public about emergencies. MCDEM said that not everyone’s mobile phone would be capable of receiving the alert. A poll run by the Wanaka Sun asked people whether they received Sunday night’s Nationwide Emergency. The results were 148 people saying yes, they received it, 121 No, never heard a thing, and four people not in New Zealand. Some iPhone users reported they had seen the message, but can’t now find it on their phone.

Eely Point future feedback sought REPORTER S STAFF editor@thewanakasun.co.nz The Wanaka community is being asked for feedback on a council draft report outlining Eely Point’s future development options. Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) released the report this week in the latest stage of its ongoing Wanaka Lakefront Reserves Management Plan. QLDC’s Wanaka parks and reserves officer Diana Manson said that the council was looking at restrictions to vehicular access within the reserve, further building potential, replanting and options for funding facilities such as playgrounds, public art, fitness trails and parking. “The reserve stretches from the Scout Den to

Highway still closed at Roxburgh Following Sunday’s flooding in Central Otago, State Highway 8 between the Roxburgh Hydro Dam, 9 km north of Roxburgh, and Millers Flat remains closed as contractors continue to clear the slips on either side of Roxburgh and in the town itself. “There is a local road detour for people with urgent travel needs in the Roxburgh area, Roxburgh East Road and Teviot Road, between the dam and Millers Flat,” said Graeme Hall, Transport Agency transport system manager. “This local road also has some damage so people

need to drive carefully. The Roxburgh East road is suitable for HPMV traffic (heavy freight) but the bridge into Roxburgh is not suitable for HPMV. “We encourage all non-essential travellers to avoid this area if possible. Other drivers through Central Otago will need to take State Highway 85 between Alexandra and Palmerston, north of Dunedin.” For updates on the road closure go to http://www.journeys.nzta.govt.nz/traffic/ roadclosures/193884

Wanaka to get car charger

WHITE R ROB journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz

Wanaka’s world number one stand up paddleboarder Annabel Anderson, pictured, has become the fourth New Zealand sporting ambassador for Air Tahiti Nui. Annabel’s partnership with the airline comes at a time when she is looking to further finesse her skills in the Islands of Tahiti; one of the world’s leading paddling destinations. Annabel has had a successful year, achieving the titles of International Surfing Association Long Distance World Champion and Long Technical World Champion, Pacific Paddle Games Long Distance, Technical and Overall Champion, Salt Life Cup Champion and SUP Magazine’s Female Athlete of the Year.

Drivers of electric vehicles in Wanaka will soon be able to charge up right in the centre of town. Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) has announced the car charging station has been installed on Ardmore Street, opposite its offices (pictured), and it should be up and running before Christmas. The new charging station will also be a fast charging station, cutting the time of between four and ten hours to just 20 to 40 minutes. QLDC project manager Rob Darby said the rapid charging would means less interruptions to a driver’s day. “Fast charging stations are able to charge electric be difficult to beat,” said Bex. vehicles in 20 to 40 minutes, meaning drivers can In addition to taking the title, there park in town, have a coffee or get their shopping done is now the small question of what to and be on their way with a fully-charged battery. do with $100,000 in cash. “We had a point to prove. We went away, simplified it, did some training and smashed it,” said Bex. For dessert, they chose rhubarb and custard and although it wasn’t their most successful course, they held on for victory. “We were in our element in a way. Last week was more stressful. I’m not super-confident when it comes to fish, but luckily we had some great advice from friends in Auckland,” said Chris. The Grand Final was billed by many as a fight between good and evil after opponents Heather and Mitch painted themselves as villains throughout the show, including a series of barbs aimed at the Wrights. However, the Wanaka pair insisted it was just about winning the title. “We’ve beaten Tash and Hera and Heather and Mitch in a cook-off and they’re very good cooks. It gives us huge kudos,” said Chris. “There was no specific person we wanted to beat. I think the reason they wanted us off was they knew we would

“Having a fast charger in the town also means commercial companies can look at running electric vehicles, such as taxis or couriers,” he said. Local resident and electric car owner Daniel Holland said the new charging station would make driving around much easier for him. “It will make it more convenient as the cars are limited with the distance they can make. It means if I am low, I can still drive into town and just top up. It gives me more freedom. “It will probably attract more people to the town and they are likely to buy a coffee or something while charging, so it’s good for local businesses too,” he said. The technology is being installed by ChargeNet Ltd, which is working with BMW and the government to roll out electric charging facilities across the South Island. Customers will have to pay, but will receive the electricity at cost and pay a small fee for using the equipment.

Council considers log cabin lease G

An original lease was granted to Lakeland Adventures in 1997. The log cabin was built and became the base for Lakeland Adventures business operations. The ground lease expires on November 30. The council adopted the Lake Wanaka Lakefront Development Plan in July 2016. When complete there will be changes to car parking, landscaping and the inclusion of an events space and village green in the area where the Lakeland lease is located. Wanaka Community Board chairperson Rachel Brown said in her August 2016 report, “while the Wanaka Community Board has set an aspirational goal of completing these works within the next five to six years, timing for the implementation for these works is uncertain until funding is procured through future ten-year and Annual Plans.” “Any new lease will need to be granted in accordance with the Reserves Act and take the new lakefront development plan into consideration.”

Ruby Island water tanks airlifted WHITE R ROB journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz Two giant water tanks have been airlifted off Ruby Island after they became obsolete. The fibreglass tanks hold up to 10,000 litres and were taken away by Wanaka Helicopters, which carried out the job free of charge for the community. Ruby Island management committee member Jude Battson said it was important to remove them and, despite some concerns beforehand, the task went completely to plan. “If there were children, or adults, who were on them and fell in, they could drown. We were going to have to fence them off or get rid of them

because they were a hazard. “They have been there for 22 years so there was quite a bit of debris to get through. As it turned out, once the helicopter put the strap on they were able to pick them up. I am still quite blown away by how awesome it was to have the Wanaka Helicopter team do such an efficient job for no charge,” she said. The two tanks were placed on Ruby Island for irrigation in 1995 after a fire destroyed vegetation three years earlier. After they were removed, they were taken to the property of Wanaka developer Allan Dippie, who donated $1000 to the cause. The site where the water tanks stood will now be used to grow flax to support the island’s gecko population.

New service supports newborns REPORTER S STAFF editor@thewanakasun.co.nz A new initiative to help make Southern District families aware of the services that their newborns are entitled to has been launched this week. Oranga Pepi, Baby’s Care was launched in Dunedin on Monday November 27 by Southern DHB and WellSouth. “It will assist families to access these services early on so that newborns receive the best care possible, and also help address barriers to accessing health services. Above all, the initiative will help us to identify children who would otherwise miss out on services or enter services late, as these are associated with poor health outcomes,” she said. Through the programme, the DHB’s existing electronic enrolment system will be used to assist access across all five services, and Southern DHB staff will follow up with family/whanau if a newborn is missing out on services. Live longer and happier lives TURNBULL G GLENDA editor@thewanakasun.co.nz

Internationally recognised speakers Dr Monica Lewis and Dr Gerald Lewis are coming to Wanaka this Saturday December 2 to present the 30+ Shades of Health seminar. Organiser Brilin general manager William Bisset said it was exciting to have the doctors present practical advice on how you can live a longer and happier life. “Dr. Monica and Dr. Gerald will be discussing topics such as depression, cancer, heart disease, hormonal issues, arthritis and more. They will discuss both mainstream and alternative treatments. The majority of chronic illnesses can be helped by mixing the natural way of things with mainstream medicine,” William said. He said participants always came away with something new. “Every time we have done a talk, even other health

professionals have got points out of the seminars,” William said. Monica and Gerald met at the Otago School of Medicine and graduated in 1967. They now run a private consulting practice in Taupo where they cross boundaries not allowed to be crossed in standard medicine. They say there are many treatments that are simply not available to publicly funded doctors that are actually beneficial. “Although drugs and operations are very effective in relieving symptoms, few go to the underlying cause of the problem or create healing. In our 50 years of medicine we have seen a huge change. Conditions that used to be rare like cancer, heart disease and alzheimer’s weren’t even in our text books, but are now quite common,” Monica said. The seminar will be held at Peak Function Centre, Wanaka on Saturday December 2, 2pm-4.30pm. Cash door sales are $30 per person or $40 per couple or online at www.brilin.co.nz.

Communications seminar Water quality warrior talks in Wanaka for non-profits WHITE R ROB journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz Non-profits and volunteers in Wanaka will get the chance to attend a communications workshop next month. Community Networks Wanaka has joined forces with Volunteering Central (VC) to organise the event, which aims to help participants boost their understanding of their own communication style and how to use it effectively. It will be run by experienced facilitator Linzi EbbageThomas (pictured). Community Networks manager Kate Murray said it would be both entertaining and informative. “Having been fortunate enough to attend Linzi’s workshop previously,

I can vouch for her energy and experience and guarantee that people will enjoy themselves and take away new learnings from the workshop”. On the day, staff and volunteers will be able to join in facilitated discussions around the importance of Emotional Intelligence and how to best use non-verbal communication. VC’s Gillian White said, “We hope people will come along for a fun few hours with Linzi, who will help everyone determine how they tend to communicate.” The event will take place at St John’s Wanaka, 4 Link Way on Wednesday December 13 from 1.30pm – 3.30pm. It is open to volunteers and staff from organisations across the region. Entry is $30, or $20 for Friends of VC.

Fund open for environmental volunteers REPORTER S STAFF editor@thewanakasun.co.nz Applications have opened for a $25,000 fund which will go towards an Otago-based not-for-profit environmental initiative. The fund, which has previously been donated to Wanaka’s native plant nursery Te Kakano Aotearoa Trust, is given to an initiative each year by Speight’s brewery. Speight’s Brewery Tours venue manager Rosie Shanks said that education and research-based

initiatives big or small would be eligible for the funding. “We’re proud to support the locals who are out there doing their bit for our natural environment, often behind the scenes with little recognition. So if you know someone whose work improving and preserving our natural Otago environment could do with a financial boost, make sure you encourage them to apply,” Sophie said. Wanaka Beer Festival returns WHITE R ROB journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz The Wanaka Beer Festival is returning for a second year and will double in size to cope with demand. Last year’s event, held at Post Office Lane, was a sell-out and organisers have responded with a new venue and twice the amount of tickets. Up to 500 craft beer fans will now be able to attend and organiser James Hay said he was delighted to offer an increase in capacity. “Last year there were a lot of people who missed out, so we thought we need a change of venue. In such a great place for events, it’s really exciting to

have the festival growing. “Wanaka has a thriving craft beer scene and the beers are coming into their own. We’re just looking forward to a great day in the sun, with great music in the background and the taps flowing.” The 2017 event will be held at the Wanaka Showgrounds on December 9. Beers from five local breweries will be on offer, with B’effect, Ground Up, Maverick, Rhyme & Reason and Wanaka Beerworks all attending. Guest breweries New New New, based in Dunedin, and Altitude (Queenstown) will also take part. The festival will also offer live entertainment, food stalls and soft drinks.

WHITE R ROB journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz The Wanaka Leos are running a car boot sale to raise money for the country’s first fully accessible barbeque. The youth group, which raises money for local and global good causes, wants to install the new equipment at Allenby Park Playscape. The barbeque is designed so it can be used by everyone, including people in wheelchairs. Leos advisor Ann Saunders said the idea came from a phone call to Queenstown Lakes District Council. “We rang the council and asked what was on their

wish list and they said an accessible barbeque. It’s the first one in New Zealand and we hope to get enough for a shade sail as well,” she said. The Leos will be joined by their elder counterparts at the car boot sale, with the Lions running a sausage sizzle and the Ladies Lions selling a range of goods, including a range of second-hand televisions. Anyone is welcome to bring their car and sell unwanted items. The cost is $15 per car and set up begins from 9am at Allenby Park. To book, contact Ann (027 434 4188) or Paris (021 0845 7518). If you go down in the woods on Sunday, you’re sure of a big surprise. After a successful event last year, Upper Clutha Plunket (UCP) is once again holding its community Teddy Bear Picnic at Wanaka Station Park. The free event will offer families and their favourite teddy bears a chance to enjoy a picnic in front of live performances from host Anna van Riel, Anna Rowley, the Wanaka Primary School Kapa Haka group and the Wanaka Ukulele Orchestra. It will also feature life-size teddy bears, a teddy bear photo booth, Cheeky Chops face painting and a visit from Santa Claus and the Wanaka Fire Brigade. Organiser Victoria Haydon said UCP was running the event to thank

everyone for their help and generosity. “We love putting this event on to give back to the Wanaka community who have helped with volunteering and fundraising so we can keep our local Wanaka Plunket rooms open. We just really want to say thanks for all your support this year. “This event is to encourage local families to spend time together and there’s no better time than now with the festive season approaching.” UCP will provide a tent with changing and feeding facilities and it is also running a sausage sizzle and a raffle on the day. Coffee, ice creams and smoothies will also be for sale. The UCP Teddy Bear picnic is on Sunday December 3 from 10am – 2pm. Attendees are asked to bring a picnic, a blanket and a teddy bear. Dogs and glass are not allowed. Pictured is last year’s event.

Wanaka Christmas lights competition TURNBULL G GLENDA editor@thewanakasun.co.nz Entries are now open for the GJ Gardner Light up your life Christmas Lights competition. Local building firm GJ Gardner has organised the competition, with the home with the most spectacular Christmas light display winning a trip for two to Las Vegas up to the value of $7500.00. Councillor Calum MacLeod, Carol Little and Tiff from The Block NZ (2016) will be judging the entries on December 15. GJ Gardner owner Nick Tapper

said it was the first time his company had done anything like this. “The idea came from one of our team in Wanaka. We wanted to get behind a community initiative over the Christmas period.” “We have put up a reasonable prize, so we hope this will peak people’s interest. We want people to go out and have a bit of fun and get as many houses lit up in Wanaka.” Entries are available from the GJ Gardner office at 37 Reece Crescent. Once all entries are in, a map with the street addresses of entries will be made available.

Free Civil Defence Training WHITE R ROB journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz Wanaka residents are being offered free training on what to do in the middle of an emergency. Emergency Management Otago will offer the session to teach people key skills for dealing with a disaster, including the role that a civil defence centre plays during an emergency and how to set one up. Organiser Trevor Andrews said that the community was crucial in an emergency and people needed to know how to react. “One of the key aspects of civil

defence is the community. What we want to do is provide training and knowledge for our communities and neighbourhoods. Roxburgh was a perfect example of what can happen just on a Sunday afternoon. “We explain to people how civil defence works and how our communities fit into that. We also teach them how to set up a civil defence centre, so they can start putting some structure into place.” The training, which includes both practical work and theory, will be held at the Wanaka Recreation Centre on December 1, running from 8:30am to 4pm.

REPORTER S STAFF editor@thewanakasun.co.nz Dance Wanaka presented Once Upon A Time to two large audiences at the Lake Wanaka Centre on Saturday November 25. This year’s production featured the tales of Snow White and Cinderella and included over 200 local Wanaka and Cromwell dancers. Dance Wanaka’s studio manager, Anna Thomas, said the dancers were

extremely excited to perform two storylines this year. “The dancing and acting were hugely entertaining. We’ve had some wonderful feedback that it’s our best production yet. I’m so proud of the emerging talent, diversity and expertise within our school now”. Lead roles were performed by Laura Neale (Cinderella), Jessica Hollow (Fairy Godmother), Caitlin Gibson (Snow White) & Cecilia Gardner (Wicked Queen).

WHITE R ROB journalist@thewanakasun.co.nz Santa Claus came to town early last weekend in a bid to raise money for St John Ambulance. The appearance was part of an annual fundraiser for the charity and it offered kids the chance to get a photo with Santa, play on a bouncy castle and look through a real-life ambulance on Saturday (November 25). Parents pitched in with donations and ambulance volunteers were on hand to answer questions and talk about what the organisation does. Dell Taylor, chairperson of the St John committee for the Wanaka area, said the event was a regular fixture on the town’s calendar.

THURSDAY 30.11.17 - WEDNESDAY 06.12.17

“We show the kids through the ambulance and they play on the bouncy castle. It’s another thing for the community and a bit of fun. We’ve done it for over 20 years and it’s a bit of an institution,” she said. The event was held in Paper Plus car park and manager Chris Lumsden said the store was giving 20 percent of proceeds from the day’s book sales to the cause. “Rather than discounting and kicking off Christmas shopping early, we help the community by donating money to St John. Most other things are funded much better, but this is an organisation led by volunteers. The funding structure is wrong, so I like to help them out and it’s worked so well for so long, why fix what’s not broken?” he said.

Wanaka’s farmers would welcome rain

BUTLER D DANIELLE newsdesk@thewanakasun.co.nz Concerns that Wanaka’s recent dry spell will evolve into a drought are rising following drier than normal soil moisture levels for the time of year. The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) found in its latest report last week that soil moisture levels had generally decreased across the South Island, with warm conditions leaving many places breaking records for the driest November.

Federated Farmers Otago president Phill Hunt said that although Otago was dry throughout, there was no major cause for concern yet. “Any rain would be welcome but we don’t need it all at once, as we’ve seen with the storms over Roxburgh. Hopefully we’ll get a bit of rain before the tourists all hoard into town,” he said. As the Wanaka Sun went to print, the MetService ten day forecast showed not a drop of rain, and NIWA’s latest report predicted rainfall below normal levels for the first half of December.

Police were called to the scene on the corner of Morris Road and State Highway 6 at 9.50am. Two people were trapped in the car and firefighters used the jaws of life to free the occupants of the vehicle.

Two people were flown to Dunedin Hospital with serious injuries following the collision, with one person on the bus receiving minor injuries. The road was closed for several hours, opening at 1.30pm. Diversions via Ballantyne Road were in place during the road closure. Police would like to thank motorists for their patience while the road was closed. Wanaka will join Te Anau in February as one of the first hosts of the programme’s expansion, run by the Agri-Women’s Development Trust (AWDT) and funded by the Red Meat Profit Partnership (RMPP). women with knowledge, skills and confidence to contribute more fully. AWDT executive director, Lindy Nelson, said there was a thirst from farming couples and individuals to learn how they can sharpen their businesses financially and work more closely with family and advisors to achieve future growth. “Research with our graduates consistently shows that when women gain confidence and skills to contribute more effectively, positive changes are seen across the farming business.” RMPP chairman Malcolm Bailey said, “The UFYB programmes aren’t just about upskilling women in farming, they’re about building resilient farm partnerships so that the mental load of farming is shared. It’s a culture shift, but one we really think the industry is ready for.”

Grebe Diary 8 transferred my attention from Wanaka grebes to Wakatipu grebes with an email from Corrine of Glenorchy. She contacted me, faced with the dilemma of what best to do for a pair of grebes attempting to breed on a precariously balanced nest on the end of a willow branch. At least one egg was laid before the nest was lost to an unknown cause. The reaction of the birds was to move some 50 metres to a nearby marina. Corrine and her husband followed the birds with a platform, hoping the birds might adopt a ready-made nest. Even if the grebes had wanted to adopt the raft, someone decided otherwise by attempting to dismantle it. In the meantime, the birds moved back to the original nest site under the willows, and busied themselves building yet another nest. I have suggested to Corrine, with the blessing of DOC, that as soon as the first replacement egg is laid

The Informant

they move egg and nest onto a platform. And indeed, the birds laid a replacement egg today (November 26), but before the rescue team could get to the nest to move it, the nest and egg have been lost yet again. It is a bit of a puzzle as to what is happening here, with some suggestion that there is someone out there that does not like Grebes. The more likely explanation are things like boat-wash, combined with lack of structural engineering qualifications. Nest 4 at the marina has hatched their brood, their vacated raft has already been commandeered by a new pair. Nest 5 is due to hatch today, November 30. I have been reliably advised that a harrier hawk is doing the Marina/ Lake Wanaka rounds and scooping up any stray chicks. For permanent staff they are entitled to 4 weeks annual leave as a minimum following completion of 12 months employment. When they take an annual leave or statutory days leave they are entitled to be paid for that day using the “Relevant daily pay (RDP)” of the employee. This RDP is calculated using all earnings of the employee such as bonuses, commissions and ordinary hours of pay. For some employees that are commission based the RDP may be too difficult to calculate and in situations where this applies “Average daily pay (ADP)” can be used. The ADP is calculated by averaging the previous 52 weeks gross earnings of the employee. Examples are those employees that have a mix of base salary and commission components making up their earnings. These employees RDP can vary pay cycle to pay cycle so this is where the ADP comes into play. Christmas day and New Years day both fall on a Monday this year. For those who work on this day then they will be entitled to time and half of their RDP and some may be entitled to “alternative day”. This area of law is tricky we suggest you seek advice if unsure to establish the correct position. Overall we recommend and find there are very good software products that assist employers with these calculations but they are never substitutes for good HR advice.

The evening is free and we invite everyone to bring a rug and picnic and enjoy the show. The tree will be lit on dusk,” Jen said. Success for Tiarn Collins REPORTER S STAFF editor@thewanakasun.co.nz With just over two months to go until the 2018 Olympic Winter Games get underway in PyeongChang, South Korea, snowboarder Tiarn Collins (17, Queenstown) has secured a careerbest result with a second-place finish at the Air+Style Big Air World Cup held in Beijing, China. Tairn was named to the New Zealand Olympic team last month to compete in Snowboard Big Air and Slopestyle. Tairn signalled he was on track for a strong result during Friday’s qualifying rounds where he earned the top score against a strong and deep international field. The Air+Style event, owned by professional snowboarder Shaun White, typically attracts a star-studded line up and this year, for the first time, the well-respected event series was sanctioned as FIS Snowboard World Cup, also giving riders opportunity to earn Olympic qualifying points.

Competition took place on a massive scaffolding ramp constructed in the Worker’s Stadium in the Chinese capital with riders given two runs to land their best trick and make the cut for finals. “This was the first competition of the season for me and my main goal for this event was to land a backside triple cork in the competition,” explains Collins. “I really wanted to do this trick because I had never done it in a competition and I felt since the Air+Style is such an iconic event it would be the perfect place to do it. So, I was super stoked to have just landed the trick, and then when I saw the score and my placing it was an amazing feeling.” New Zealand freeskier Jackson Wells is also preparing to compete in the Slopestyle World Cup in Stubai, Austria. Wells finished fourth in his heat in Friday’s qualifying rounds, finishing 12th in the final out of a field of 16.

Wanaka Duck caller Hunter Morrow is back on home soil as the world number two in his sport. The three-time New Zealand national champion finished second in the World Live Duck Calling Championships on November 10, held in Maryland, USA. After back-to-back top five placings, Hunter said he was delighted to move up to second. “I was super happy with the result and getting to make it to the top five for the second year in a row. “My goal was to make the top three and they do the results in reverse order, so when they get

through six, five, four and your name’s not been called, it’s very exciting. It was great to share it with my good friend Seth Fields, who won,” he said. Hunter, the Southern Hemisphere’s only representative in the main event, claimed the result in a field of 28 other duck callers, mainly from the USA and Canada. He also took third in the Goose Calling competition and isn’t ready to call it quits anytime soon. “I hope to go back next year and give it another shot and go for first place.” Hunter’s result capped a successful competition for New Zealand, with Nelson’s Holly Irvine finishing third in the junior event.
