PUVMP deadline extends anew, steers talk among Monsai commuters
By: Marywin Love Julito
Following the controversies surrounding the implementation of the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP), President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. approved the Department of Transportation (DOTr)’s recommendation to extend the franchise consolidation of jeepney drivers and operators by another three months last January 27, 2024.
“The President has approved Transport Secretary Jaime J. Bautista’s recommendation, granting an additional three months until April 30, 2024, for the consolidation of public utility vehicles. The extension is to give an opportunity to those who expressed intention to consolidate but did not make the previous cutoff,” Presidential Communications Secretary Cheloy Garafil said.
DOTr Secretary Bautista noted that the extended deadline will allow drivers and operators alike ‘to meet the consolidation requirement’ and will also enable them ‘to fast-track the implementation of the PUVMP.’

The program stressed the importance of implementing the National Reading Program (NRP) across elementary and secondary schools through activities such as the Drop Everything and Read (DEAR), Read-AThon, and invitation of resource persons.
Under DepEd’s first memorandum of 2024, “All Fridays throughout the school year shall be designated as Catch-up Fridays, with a focus on operationalizing the National Reading Program during the first half of the day’s schedule and on fostering Values, Health, and Peace Education for the second half.

3 Silay City College begins construction phase
By: Hannah Singuay
In an effort to revitalize the quality of education in Silay City, construction for Silay City College has officially commenced following the groundbreaking ceremony spearheaded by City Mayor Joedith Gallego at La Alegria Residential Estates last November 5, 2023.
“I want to thank the donors of this land, the Valderrama and Jalandoni families that donated the 3.5 hectares of land making the construction of the college possible,” Mayor Joedith Gallego said during the ceremony.
The construction of the Silay City College building, one of Mayor Gallego’s priority projects for the Silaynon students, is now commencing gradually.
To bolster the basic education priorities articulated in the MATATAG: Bansang Makabata, Batang Makabansa Agenda, DepEd’s current initiatives provide opportunities ‘to enhance learner’s academic performance’ and ‘to address learning gaps in key learning areas.’
PH PISA standing
The implementation of the program was a prompt response after the Philippines plunged in the 2022 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) study conducted by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), ranking 77th among the 81 countries tested.
Additionally, the Homeroom Guidance Program (HGP) shall also be included in the Catch-up Fridays.”

Backed by Republic Act No. 7079 or the Campus Journalism Act of 1991, the camp consisted of lectures and breakout sessions that 'highlight the role of campus journalism in developing responsible learners.’
Moreover, The Warbler’s School Paper Adviser (SPA) Sir Junell Lupo noted that campus journalism exists not just for the sake of competition.
"Do not train just to join the publication and compete, because it is only secondary to its very core ( of journalism) to make you responsible students and nation-builders with journalistic skills," Sir Lupo said to the 120 registered participants in the morning lecture on the bigger picture beyond the event.
According to the DepEd Bureau of Education Assessment (BEA) Education Research Division officer-in-charge Alexander Sucalit, the PISA results indicated that the ‘Philippines stood five to six years behind in educational competencies, with the country ranking 76th in Math, 79th in Reading, and 80th in Science.’
Subsequently, DepEd remained steadfast in its call for the nation to ‘take active involvement, cooperation, and collaboration in advancing the quality of basic education in the Philippines.’
Monsai Teacher’s Response
Congruent to the DepEd’s agenda for literacy initiatives, one of Doña Montserrat Lopez Memorial High School’s (DMLMHS) banner programs—Project I-Read, along with its Main Proponent, Rina Rose Perez,
said that the implementation of CatchUp Friday is an “answered prayer” as it is a validation on the teachers’ advocacies that all of them must play a role in helping learners improve their reading skills.
“Since Catch-up Friday is a new initiative, it also means additional lesson preparation to the teachers, however, the task of making learners become readers becomes less overwhelming to English and Filipino teachers knowing that we have all the teachers from all subject areas as our allies,” she added.
Ma’am Perez also stressed the importance of the program on the learner’s part noting that; “the beauty is in the realization that a specific lesson is not taught in isolation to a specific subject, but that they are integrated with other subject areas.”
According to the memorandum released by DepEd Region 6, “RAM was established to assess the learning outcomes of the learners in public schools and gather baseline data for the School Improvement Plan (SIP), Division Education Development Plan (DEDP), and Regional Education Development Plan (REDP).”
“Most of the students answered the test diligently,” Science, Technology, and Engineering (STE) Grade 7 - Pearl Adviser Ma'am Marychris Arsenal said on the conduct of RAM in DMLMHS.
Ma'am Arsenal also noted that the data gathered from the students will serve as a basis to address learning gaps across various learning areas inside the campus.
Furthermore, as mentioned in DepEd’s official statement, the RAM is ‘not an additional burden for students; this must be implemented due to real problems in literacy, and numeracy.

SILAY CITY - City Mayor
Joedith Gallego officially received the Philippine Air Force (PAF)’s retired Fokker F27 “Friendship” aircraft, which once served the late President Ferdinand Marcos during the blessing, transfer of ownership, and unveiling of marker ceremonies held at the Barangay Eustaquio Lopez People’s Park, last January 26, 2024.
The plane, initially used to provide air transport for the President, his Cabinet and visiting dignitaries, experienced an engine problem in November 2022 and has since been retired from service.
“The communication between my office and the PAF was initiated in September [of 2022],” Gallego added, noting that the aircraft was brought to Barangay E. Lopez that same month.
“Now, this historic aircraft is here to serve as the newest attraction in the city, where people can experience and see it up close. Indeed, our city is blessed to have a piece of Philippine aviation history right in our very soil,” Gallego said.
Originally built in July 1959, the plane was the oldest flying Fokker in the world, with 65 years in service not only as a presidential plane but also in the PAF’s reconnaissance missions, relief missions, and rescue operations.
PAF officials Commanding General Lieutenant General (LTGEN) Stephen P. Parreño, Commander Major General (MGEN) Joannis Leonardi B Dimaano, 303rd Brigade Commander BGEN Orlando Endralin were also in attendance during the ceremonies.
“Our Silay City College will start in the school year 2024, in June, if not September, and will have three courses: Electromechanical Technology, Electrical Technology, and Heating, Ventilation, Air-conditioning, and Refrigeration (HVAC-R), “Educational Consultant and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences of Silay Institute Dr. Wilfredo Hermosura said on a Facebook post about the courses offered by the college.
Silay City College is located opposite to the Teresita Lopez Jalandoni Provincial Hospital, providing accessibility and convenience to students.

Silay hosts DOT’s PEP kick-off in Visayas HPCo boasts sugar culture in Silay

SILAY CITY - Embarking on a journey of rich culture, heritage, and arts in the Philippines, the Department of Tourism (DOT) Philippine Experience Program (PEP) officially kicked off its Western Visayas tour starting with Silay City, Negros Occidental as its first stop last November 29, 2023.
Exploring the city of Silay, the DOT Philippine Experience delegates started their Sugar Heritage Trail Tour at Hawaiian-Philippine Company, the tour showcased a close-up demonstration of the traditional process of producing Muscovado sugar along with the making of fresh sugar cane juice.

The recent visit of DOT Secretary Frasco, alongside tourism stakeholders at HPCo gained positive reactions from fellow Montserratians who reside in Brgy. Hawaiian, taking pride in their way of living being recognized by the national committees as a historical and cultural landmark of the city.
“Mas nami kay mas makilala ang Hawaiian as one of the main contributors of sugar cane not only in Negros, but also in the Philippines,”
June Arvin Bebit, a Grade 12 student said, living in Brgy. Hawaiian.
DOT Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco, together with the national and regional tour operators also had the privilege to ride on the “iron dinosaur” or the steam locomotive that was used before to transport cut sugarcanes from the haciendas down to the mill site.
Grade 10 student Alexandra Lequillo echoed the comment, saying: “Exciting gid and kanami sa feeling nga nagvisit ang DOT sa HPCo kay ang history-driven nga old factory sang central as well as ang traditional way of making sugar, narecognize gid up to national level.”
The Philippine Experience: Culture, Heritage, and Arts Program is a cultural tourism initiative by the DOT, led by DOT Secretary Frasco captivating the Philippines’ heritage and diverse culture, providing tourists a guide to an ‘immersive and authentic cultural experience.’
“We hope LTFRB and other concerned agencies will use the extension period to improve the program’s guidelines in line with raised concerns, particularly here in Metro Manila. We still believe the program’s benefit outweighs its perceived deficiency,” Bautista added.

IRON DINOSAUR.
Meanwhile, as this issue amassed hundreds of opinions from Filipino commuters, Montserratian students like June Arvin Bebit who rides jeepney daily said the implementation of the PUVMP ‘has both positive and negative effects’ as it will help eradicate traditional jeepneys that are considered to be ‘one of the lead contributors of greenhouse gasses leading to environmental problems.’
“However, as a student, it will also affect me (the modernization program) because the jeepney fare will surely increase due to drivers being indebted to upgrade their jeepneys instantly,” the Grade 12 student added.
Grade 10 student Juliana
Therese Guacena also acknowledged that ‘jeepney drivers who cannot afford to purchase a modern jeepney would not only lose their source of income
“But extension alone is not enough. Let’s continue to act until the business and foreign PUVMP is scrapped and fight for progressive, patriotic, and inclusive public transportation,” the PISTON President highlighted.
Originally launched in 2017 and primarily slated to push through last December 31, 2023, the DOTr’s initiative has been delayed several times due to transport groups such as PISTON and Samahang Manibela Mananakay at Nagkaisang Terminal ng Transportasyon (MANIBELA) holding multiple protests, transport strikes, and supreme court petitions against the impending threat that will displace thousands of jeepney drivers and operators all over the country.

If it means ensuring my safety, I don’t mind making extra effort to buy my lunch food.
To the Editor,
The country’s educational quality results still need to meet the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) standards, as demonstrated by the consistently low scores. This sad reality raises the question, can we submit quality citizens in this existing structure?
From 2015 to 2022, the Philippines’ PISA scores in Mathematics, Science, and Reading between 340 and 356 points have been consistently below the minimum proficiency scale, placing the country 77th out of 81 countries in the said international assessment organized by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Assessment for 15-year-old learners.
Despite the efforts made by the government as mandated by the Constitution and the Republic Act No. 9155, otherwise known as the Governance of Basic Education Act, the results only show minimal effective outcomes. Thus, our learning system needs to receive close attention.
Recognizing the nation’s
shortcomings would enable the officials to take action that could alter the course of events. Establishing a pathway allows instructors and students to have a flexible and healthy learning environment by allocating sufficient resources to schools, particularly in underserved areas, to improve infrastructure, provide updated learning materials, and access technology. This may involve re-aligning Confidential Funds to the education budget and implementing mechanisms to ensure equitable distribution of resources.
Understandably, there can be different factors in this country’s socioeconomic ranking. However, according to World Bank research, poverty stays at the top with 22.4% or 25.24 million people as of 2023. Their lack of resources—financially, physically, and mentally, discourages them from doing their very best in learning, thus resulting in an unproductive education.
Internal Trike Terminal
It’s lunchtime, and our usual routine is to go outside the campus to buy our lunch. But on that particular day, we would witness an unexpected change of scenery – a sight of tricycles stretching from the entrance gate (the 2nd gate near the STE building) to Plaza Historia.
“Why are there tricycles inside?”
The existing system undermines workers while praising those at the top and displays no cooperation. The same research from the World Bank underscores the pivotal role of teacher competence and content knowledge in student outcomes. Despite the dedication of educators, many are undervalued, overworked, and underpaid, contributing to disparities in subject proficiency. Thus, it will be beneficial to provide continuous professional development opportunities for teachers to enhance their pedagogical skills and expertise through workshops, seminars, and online courses focusing on modern teaching methodologies, subject-specific content, and classroom management techniques.
Meanwhile, the “No Student Left Behind” policy of the Department
of Education
supposedly ensures students’ accountability and education quality. Still, the reality is quite the opposite, as it leads to “mass promotion” of students. Allowing students to pass even with a low grade is equivalent to throwing away the knowledge and work they must put in. It is about time that the government concentrates on raising the standard of instruction and ensuring that students learn the material, not just pass it.
Embracing change is faced with risks, but the status quo is untenable. The current system must be reformed to bring a new era of improved educational quality and equal opportunities for all Filipino students. Only then will the next generation face a brighter future.
Scrap Feigned Ignorance
Onelate afternoon, I was seated in a nearly empty jeepney bound for Silay when voices from fellow commuters could be heard. “Ikaw na singgit, basi magpiyok ko,” her friend uttered. “Ahay! Basi ako man.” Their banters continued with a synchronized countdown before urging the driver, “Manong, lugar lang!”
Luckily, their voices did not crack. As they bid their expressions of appreciation to the driver before exiting the jeepney, a subtle smile came across my face.
“Diri lang ko, manong. Salamat gid!” I got off the jeepney upon reaching Silay. As it departed, its exterior, painted with artistic patterns, escaped notice until then.
A genuine beauty caught in a bind.
Sadly, the familiar jeepneys we’ve been accustomed to are

subjected to being phased out—or modernized. In 2017, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) stated that the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP) is implemented by the Department of Transportation (DOTr) as a “comprehensive system reform that will entirely change the public land transportation industry.”
deadline for our drivers and operators until April 30, based on numerous reports.
A battle for lives
Once more, the government extended the consolidation
Against the Divide
Anews report immediately grabbed my attention as I scrolled through various media outlets. Unfortunately, the revived issue of Mindanao’s secession threatens the Philippines’ progressive development; being a country of leaders with misaligned goals, attaining peace and stability is a persistent challenge—a grim reality we perpetually face.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., with both parties exchanging personal and governance criticisms against each other.
Many drivers and operators who are already struggling to provide for their families have to shoulder modern jeepneys costing 2.8 million pesos as part of the PUVMP. Hence, as reported by Philstar, the minimum fare will rise from 12 pesos to 40 to 50 pesos in five years or more— significantly affecting various commuters’ day-to-day living.
Moreover, the subsidies offered, ranging from 160,000 to 260,000 pesos, will not cover half of the cost of a modern jeepney.
The PUVMP, as Transportation Secretary Jaime
stated, is “not an anti-poor program and will improve the lives of the drivers.” Yet, they will undoubtedly be weighed down by modernization if it comes from the government’s immediate requirements.
No doubt, with the PUVMP, this will only push our drivers and operators to battle a losing fight for their lives.
For better or for worse?
The PUVMP aims to promote safer and environmentally friendly vehicles, as well as industry consolidation, while also alleviating the escalating traffic crisis.
According to Elmer Francisco, CEO of Francisco Motors, going full electric can be considered an option. Recognized by Filipino citizens as one of the efficient solutions, their e-jeepneys
costing 985, 000 pesos, are definitely cheaper than the modernized ones. While change is inevitable and should be embraced, if it’s really for the better, this modernization requires a tantamount financial funding and consideration to those who cannot afford to purchase and upgrade jeepneys, as well as to those wanting to genuinely aid.
With the PUVMP implementation, feigned ignorance should not be conveyed. I personally think that this will only make our drivers and operators face an unjust and uncertain future if adequate financial support is not offered. Let us heed the collective voice, discern their genuine needs, and as commuters, advocate for what is just.
According to Duterte, the ChaCha was intended for the Marcoses to extend their political power; however, the Filipinos expressed a similar concern regarding the former president’s idea of seceding Mindanao from the rest of the Philippines. With dubious aims behind such a scheme, the region’s separation puts our country at greater risk of having a divided future.
that they do not support Duterte’s call to secede. Further, Marcos firmly addressed his disapproval, stating that the Constitution “does not entertain the concept of secession.”
Also known as the “Land of the Promise,” I have learned that Mindanao’s economic contributions play an essential role—from their natural resources, tourism, agriculture, and more—generating 22% of the country’s wealth.
safety of the learners and tricycles, saying, ‘if they were outside the school, they are prone to accidents and it causes traffic congestion.’
problems persist, a potential safety hazard could grow.
This alternative approach to traffic could be more convenient, and commuters and drivers feel like something should be done.
Senate Bill 1566, introduced by the late Mirriam Defensor Santiago, stresses the need for a safe school environment – including the wellbeing of the students. Yet, these changes to the school transport system, which are still experimental, are leaving me with doubts about our safety.
I wondered. Subsequently, I discovered a new trial route, which involved loading and unloading students within the campus, was being used. Following this new direction, students will have to hustle and bustle through this crowded and cramped newly laid-out path to get to the exit gate, the blue gate–the smallest among the three pathways. The sight outside, however, is still almost the same, as if changes were never made.
School Principal–Rodito R. Badian stated in an interview that the primary concern is the
When asked if they considered returning to the previous transport route, he responded that this is still experimental.
On the other hand, tricycle drivers and students voiced their displeasure with the revised route. One tricycle driver stated, “It did reduce traffic outside, but to us tricycle drivers, it’s a nuisance.”
Meanwhile, another driver brought up the problem of how difficult it was for drivers to exit because the tricycles in front wouldn’t move until full, causing the rear tricycles to find a different route. If these
Considering both sides of the issue, I applaud the school for its efforts to reduce traffic and address safety hazards. However, it will be vital for the school to consider the essential elements for a more organized and efficient loading and unloading of students.
For now, the only thing we can do is wait for a potential solution that would be convenient for everyone. Until then, we must abide by the current path because it primarily intends to help us. If it means ensuring my safety, I don’t mind making extra effort to buy my lunch.
On January 30, former President Rodrigo Duterte brought up Mindanao’s independence from the Republic of the Philippines in a news conference. In addition, previous House Speaker and Davao del Norte Representative Pantaleon Alvarez was announced to head the movement through a People’s Initiative (PI) signature campaign.
Recently, the Charter Change (Cha-Cha) via PI intensified the feud between Duterte and current

According to Cagayan de Oro, 2nd District Representative Rufus Rodriguez, Mindanao was only allotted 16% of the national budget, which he claimed to be one of the reasons why its potential to be independent was once again brought up. Yet, fair distribution of resources should be provided, rather
than turning this disparity into an opportunity to divide the nation. Based on the Asian Development Bank report, Mindanao has the largest share of the country’s poor population.
Despite its significant economic contributions, the previous authorities in power appeared to disregard the citizens’ basic needs.
Rodriguez stated in a Rappler report that the Duterte administration
Life is beautiful. Let all the children live.
Abortion: A Rights Destroyer
The most valuable gift we have been given is life, which once taken away, cannot be replaced. One life is lost in every abortion, but who are we to deny a child the opportunity to live in the outside world? Because of this, abortion should not be permitted in the Philippines unless there is no danger to the mother’s health.
The Philippine Commission on Human Rights (PCHR) expressed their support for the decriminalization of abortion for the first time in the
Philippines as part of its Priority Human Rights Legislative Agenda for the 19th Congress of the Philippines.
Nonetheless, in our nation, abortion is prohibited by the Catholic faith. Since the church holds that human life begins at conception, abortion can be categorized as a grave sin in their eyes. The Catholic church’s 266th pope, Francis, compared abortion to hiring a hitman. He went on to say that, according to science, a
child’s organs begin to develop in the third week of conception and that, as such, their life should be respected.
Abortion violates the rights of both the unborn child and each and every one of us to life. House Bill No. 4900, section 3, states that from the moment of conception, an unborn child can already be recognized as a human personality with an extended mantle of legal protection. They will also be entitled to all legal protections and human rights, including the right to life, safety, and protection from harm while still in their mother’s womb.
In contrast, abortion gives women rights to make choices in terms of their pregnancy, especially to those women who are
should have granted the region a more significant budget share. Thus, political leaders should not be blinded by power and greed. The call for secession should not be considered, especially when the questionable deeds of other authority figures threaten peace and progress. Once more, division is not the right course. I firmly believe that the government should prioritize equality and the well-being of Mindanaoans over their region’s perceived “desirability to secede,” as proposed by Duterte, given the numerous benefits it provides. Although constituted by diverse ethnic groups, Mindanao is fundamentally linked to the Philippines, and we must acknowledge its role in preserving peace and stability.
victims of rape and got pregnant unintendedly. However, taking human life is not a solution for this problem. Republic Act (RA) 8505 provides assistance and protection for rape victims as well as establishing a rape crisis center in every province and city. The Commission on Population and Development (PopCom) in partnership with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) started a social program for adolescents with unintended pregnancies that can help them in their needs.
Raising a child is hard, but depriving them to experience the beauty of life is harder. Let them live; their lives are just equally important.

Tiger parenting is a principally abusive and destructive form of parenting that should be discouraged to would-be-parents and forced to stop in current parents. Not only does this damage the child but the relationship they have with their parents as well.
According to the article “Defining Tiger Parenting in Chinese Americans” from the University of Texas, tiger parenting is an authoritative and strict method of parenting where high standards are placed on a child’s performance and success
in school, activities, and other extracurriculars. Though the term was originally meant to describe overly strict Chinese parents exclusively, it colloquially has broadened to encompass parents who share the nature.
In the study, the harsh regimen compared to more gentle and supportive parenting showed that the strategy of setting high standards on children induce depressive symptoms and worse developmental outcomes and lower grades. Not even the parenting style can offer what it claims to offer.
In an instance, Diana Tui, a victim of such, felt that she was merely living out of her parent’s ideas about what she should be–how her future was molded before she would even reach it. She buckled under the mounting pressure and stress of every mishap she could make, taking it out on her well-being and health to achieve what her parents desired of her. Perfection in the parents eyes was the goal, when she couldn’t and chose for herself, she was estranged and abandoned.
Tiger-parented children lacked the independence to see their
wants, desires, aspirations and themselves.
They were a piece of clay to be smoothened and squeezed, rolling on the stage built by their “caretakers.”
The belief of “It’s not for everyone” is crass. It’s not for everyone unless it severely harms the child, then it wouldn’t be for everyone.
Although I was raised by “laid-back” parents, studies and investigations made me realize how fortunate I am for I have been with parents of good heart. The effects of tiger-parenting can go up to the extreme of Jennifer Pan’s case–murder and attempted murder to her parents.
Undeniably, a clear action must be taken against those that oppose the proper care and treatment for their children’s physical, mental, and emotional health, as such can result in a healthier well-being and relationship between bloods.
Press Liberty Amidst CNN Shutdown
In an era of immediate information sharing and endless interest in breaking news, the role of journalists has never been more crucial. Yet, amid finding the truth and being committed to informing the public, there is a rising fear about the risks that even the campus press must take. And another media shutdown leaves a truly alarming “chilling effect.”.
The recent demise of CNN Philippines, a media platform that debuted in 2015 and was shut down on January 29, affected the lives of over 300 employees and the Filipino service. Though the reason is economic, its lasting effect encompasses more and beyond.
For a long time, CNN has proven its worth as one of the more trustworthy sources of accurate information. Thus, its shutdown opens a very dangerous precedence of widespread consumption of false information, not to mention the economic disadvantage brought to the 300 people who lost their jobs as a result of their forced termination.
Despite House Bill No. 913 providing security, benefits, and the right to freedom of speech to journalists, open judgments, hatred, and redtagging persist. As reported by the College Editors Guild of the Philippines (CEGP), nearly
a thousand violations against student publications, including interference with editorial policies and harassment, continue. Indisputably, this demonstrates how they are not freely given the liberty to be the voices of the masses.
This alarming manipulation has long been disregarded, and the effects of these actions are still imprinted in our lives. Out of 115 respondents to a survey conducted by the Committee to Protect Journalists in 2019, the majority (more than 70%) reported that they had experienced threats or safety concerns. This demonstrates the degree of intimidation and job insecurity they experienced.
Without a doubt, we ought to be given more. With the Campus Journalism Act of 1991 in place, journalists should have the freedom to cover social issues without fear of retaliation or humiliation, making it easier to expose the shortcomings of their schools.
These obstacles prevent our ability to expose institutional faults. Therefore, only with competent management and adequate resources can we confront issues forcefully, disregarding threats and judgments.
Supporting those who uphold the highest standards of objectivity and truthfulness remains crucial in this society bounded by the chain of impediments to the press.
On a desk lies a paper creaseless of a student’s studious hands and ink, the words written in print and technological dependence.
What difference is a nation’s people using technology dependently to a nation using technology?
When students look at an educator, they imagine a guiding hand, and when students look at technology, they think of the same. In the landscape of education, people need to find a common ground between teachers and their pupils, working independently and with the ability to work with technology.
According to the 21st International Conference on Artificial Technology held in 2020, Artificial Intelligence in Education is an emerging field in Educational technologies. The potential of it should be considered to aid in learners’ school work and learning.
AI’s usage in learning presents the problem of students needing to use it more effectively. It gives skewed and inaccurate statistics and analysis of learners’ true grasp of the subject, which could impact how they shape their and their country’s future.
What difference is a nation’s people using technology dependently to a nation using technology?
As a student, I have observed how many of my classmates use AI to improve their work; some use it as a guide, while others use it to avoid the stress of selfimprovement.
AI and similar should be an alternative way of teaching that benefits the relationship between a learner and their educator.
Without a doubt, we ought to be given more.
Compared to the traditional method of a teacher solely depending on a class of many, AI could alleviate the overburden on the teacher’s part and give another perspective on the lesson for the student to learn.
According to Forbes estimates, this technology is currently used by about 80%
of organizations. With the development of AI, nearly limitless innovation is attainable. AI must be ensured to serve the greater good and should only be viewed as a tool to help relieve us from burdensome endeavors.
Relief is not the only help provided by AI and technologies on teachers’ shoulders, as they can use it to negate the issues and improve facets of instruction and guidance. Teachers can learn to improve as well as their students. If education makes quality learners, education makes quality educators.
“AI is always better than the work of students,” naysayers may say, but they neglect to see how this could negatively impact society.
A student’s skills and knowledge are a reflection of their foreseeable state. A capable population is a capable nation; a faux-capable population is incapable.
People dependent on AI and technologies become undependable people without it. What purpose does an individual have if they cannot contribute to anything proficient and worthwhile when the debilitating crutches making them stand pulled from them?
Additionally, the development of AI as a tool is undoubtedly beneficial. However, AI taking the place of people and being misused in society at a large scale could sooner pose a threat to humankind. AI can be helpful for teachers, students, and the state of education; this is why we should take advantage of it appropriately and without indulgence.

“PHILIPPINES!”
Watching live on Facebook, I squealed upon hearing my country being called forward on the Miss Universe stage. From my laptop screen, a ravishing Filipina, Michelle Dee, walked elegantly, receiving the crowd’s uproar with her evening gown revelation.
As soon as Michelle’s black-patterned gown was unveiled as a tribute to the 106-year-old Apo Whang-Od, I was completely puzzled. Yet, seeing how the name set social media abuzz, a question from my clueless self entered my thoughts—who is she?
As stated in Michelle’s Instagram post, the reason why she chose such representation in the pageant is that Whang-Od “became an icon” in preserving the diverse heritage of the country. Also known as Maria Oggay, I learned that she is the oldest and last hand-tapping tattoo artist or mambabatok of the traditional Kalinga.
A living legend
Born in 1917, Whang-Od can be found sitting in the rich landscape of Buscalan Village, Kalinga. At the age of 16, she started her career in hand-tapping tattoos with her father, a master tattooist in the region, as her mentor. I was astonished upon learning that I am the same age as her, 90 years in the past.
Hence, with her relentless determination to preserve the Kalinga culture, Whang-od broke traditional barriers, proving herself to be a living legend.
Behind the art
Behind Whang-Od’s crafts reflect the life, experiences, and beliefs everyone wanted to embody even in the great beyond. In the introduction to Jake Verzosa’s The Last Tattooed Women of Kalinga in 2014, Kalinga elder and former National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) official, Natividad Sugguiyao, wrote that traditional tattooing is crucial and “should cease to be forgotten” by younger generations.
Whang-Od’s distinctive art, the simple three-dot sign-off, is what she presently engages in, together with her grandnieces, Grace

“Manang, bracelets po?”
Shamelessly, I tended to the passersby at the Public Plaza, where we sold our bracelets. As I uttered those words, everything flashed before my eyes, from the design process to the manufacturing and the launch. We’ve come this far.
The latest business endeavors undertaken by students are indicative of the growing trend of students pursuing their entrepreneurial goals. According to the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, 6.2 percent of adults are well-established entrepreneurs, yet student entrepreneurs are rarely discussed.
The brains behind every bead
With a vision in mind and enthusiasm in heart, the delicate hands produced strings of brilliant bracelets in various hues and tones.
PIÈLLE and Co., a locally handcrafted accessories business, owned and operated by three grade ten students from Doña Montserrat Lopez Memorial High School: Sophia, Gabriel, and Nicole.
When asked why they founded their business, they replied, “We wish to fund our needs and wants and not rely on our parents. Also, to set free the fire of passion that ignites within us,”
Furthermore, despite their plates being filled, they juggle the demanding schedule of their academics, journalism duties, and business while combating burnout as it lurks in every corner.
A beading heart for the strays
Their passion for handicrafts complemented their love of animals as they set aside a fraction of their
revenue; PIÈLLE purchases dog feeds to feed the unfortunate stray dogs.
Their bony frames, with their ribs bulging against their skin, made it seem that they hadn’t been fed in days. They devoured the starshaped dog feeds. They were letting forth a howl in relief.
“Seeing them stray in the streets with nothing to eat, drink, or even go to. It truly saddens me as a person. I am grateful that with the help of our business, we managed to elevate their situation even just for a little,” Gabriel added.
With hearts full of gratitude for the act of compassion, we were genuinely enlightened about our minor role in society.
It helped me realize how far we’ve progressed, not only as young business entrepreneurs but also as humans.
and Elyang, the next tribal ink artists. This painful yet meaningful craftsmanship represents the three of them.
Collective pride
Despite Whang-Od’s weakening eyesight, she continues the Kalinga tribe’s culture, displaying a truly commendable effort in nurturing the ancient practices of our people. Thus, I can never escape the proud heart in me.
The baffled reaction I showed a few moments ago was gone. What Michelle presented on stage will indeed spark a difference—that the tribal tattooists—the mambabatoks in this modern world will never be forgotten and Apo Whang-Od’s ink will endlessly persist as empowering marks in every Filipino.

It was the warm noon that made my sweat slowly trickle against my face. Running out of gas, I went back to our room after a wild chase of shots encapturing the highlights of a school event—another bustling day for us student journalists. As I’ve adjusted my camera’s specs, there they are once again, my fellows fired up for the publication. Yet, in one corner of the room, one caught my eye. There he was sitting in front of the laptop, clicking on the photos I’ve just uploaded.

While the realm of student journalism may not involve physical touch in the traditional sense, it is nonetheless a deeply human endeavor—one that relies on empathy, compassion, and a genuine desire to connect with others. Through their storytelling, student journalists have the power to touch hearts, to evoke emotion, and to inspire action. They bridge the gap between individuals and communities, bringing people together through the shared experience of storytelling and the universal language of empathy.
Holding a pen and a piece of paper, would you consider it a part of “physical touch”?
Well, from the eyes of a journalist, it most definitely can be. Through storytelling and sharing real-life experiences, student journalists have the gift to touch hearts and evoke emotions with the use of their words.
Spaces and graphics he weaved, my images found a home on his screen. He was a layout artist.
There was a flutter in every shutter. There was this unknown mystery within me that made me stare on my camera’s screen. It was only for a moment when I pressed on the shutter, yet quite longing to know him. Perhaps this is what they call “love”. Love, generally known to be a “profound connection”. Love, a word that knows no bounds, and continues to transcend in different meanings and interpretations.
One may say that love is a deep and complex emotion characterized by affection and a strong attachment to someone or something, or it could be as simple as a foundation of relationships of compassion and commitment.
According to Gary Chapman, a renowned author, counselor, and speaker, love centers around the concept of expressing it through various languages or channels. He introduced that love can be understood through its five primary languages, written on his book “Five Love Languages: The
Secret to Love That Lasts”.
Chapman’s work focuses on helping individuals to effectively ‘love’ in their relationships by identifying and speaking their partner’s primary love language. On that note, what if we were to integrate the paradigm of the love languages into an analysis of a journalist’s role within society, particularly regarding their dedication to information dissemination, their passion for writing, and their commitment to crafting compelling visuals to inform the public?

At the heart of student journalism lies the power of words—words that affirm, inspire, and ignite change. Through investigative reporting, feature articles, and opinion pieces, student journalists wield the pen as a weapon of truth, shining a light on issues that might otherwise remain shrouded in darkness. Their words have the power to challenge authority, spark debate, and give voice to the voiceless, affirming the ideals of democracy and free speech upon which society is built.
“I love you.”
“I appreciate you.”
“You are enough.”
Have you ever heard of these before?
Hearing these words from someone special to you would make you feel loved and appreciated.
Those are called words of affirmation. It is a love language that simply means expressing your love and appreciation for someone through words. Some people might not be good at this kind of love
It’s almost as if every syllable is composed together to create a sacred piece that can alter someone’s perspective on life. With every article written, a sense of connection and equalness is embraced. Connecting the press with society and promoting peace and love through media information.
As we commemorate the muchawaited “Heart’s Day” this February 14th, we must always acknowledge that every word we dare to speak or write holds thousands of definitions and values. We must put every word to good use and spread continuous love to everyone.
language but do you know who gives the best words of affirmation? Journalists!
Each masterpiece written by a journalist shares different kinds of human experiences which are love letters to resilience, hope, and understanding, sparking debates that enable everyone to share these heartfelt conversations about various issues and topics, affirming the beauty found in our shared stories and the right to express opinions freely.
As we celebrate Heart’s Day, journalists continue to wield their pens as weapons for truth and freedom, beaming the light upon certain issues and topics that would otherwise go unnoticed and their words affirming the worth of every story and the power of different voices.
As a student journalist, do you know why I love giving you words of affirmation? It’s because you deserve them all the time.

Student journalism is a labor of love, requiring dedication, perseverance, and a willingness to invest one’s time and energy into the pursuit of excellence. Whether spent poring over interview transcripts, brainstorming story ideas, or meeting tight deadlines, the time devoted to the craft of journalism is time well spent.
It is through this quality time that student journalists hone their skills, forge meaningful connections, and cultivate a sense of camaraderie with their peers, forming bonds that will last a lifetime.
Journalists spend most of their time locking eyes with their parchment, as they grip their quills, ready to compete with their fast paced train of thoughts.
Having an all nighter with eyes ignited with inquisitive curiosity as they probed deeper into hollow rabbit holes, looking for credible information to write about, is a journalist’s form of upholding the essence of quality time
Moreover, remaining steadfast, and equipped to express their passion by investing their time in one on one interviews, to construct paragraphs to express- not only themselves, but also to provide an insight on various topics.
Investing time, and dedication to what they truly love, journalists never cease to express this love language in an effective and most loving way possible.

Student journalism is not merely a passive observer of the world; it is a call to action, a commitment to serve the greater good. From covering campus events to advocating for social justice causes, student journalists dedicate themselves to the noble pursuit of informing and educating their peers. Through their tireless efforts, they provide a vital service to the community, fostering dialogue, promoting transparency, and holding those in power accountable.
Are acts of service your language of love? Then journalists are for you! Serving you the exact data—it ain’t biased, it ain’t fake, it ain’t mixed signals—but it is sure to you and to society too!
Only a journalist from a school publication can provide you with the acts of service you need by serving you stories from the heart and stories close to heart. With an intention to be certain and clear with every
article, there’s no need to doubt our love for you!
With a pen and paper, by simplifying complex ideas and producing thoughtprovoking articles that inform and inspire their audience, journalists serve for the betterment of society with their effective communication.
As tiresome as it may be, the boundless determination of journalists to serve precise, timely, and pertinent information to the public will never waver.
With that being said, the steadfast dedication of journalists to the school publication and to the people they serve with the best articles is an act of love, an act of persistence, and an act of service.

In conclusion, by recognizing and appreciating the application of the concept of the “Five Languages of Love” within the context of journalism, we garnered a brilliant yet heartwarming comprehension of the already profound importance of journalists towards our society and country.
Not only merely reporting facts, journalists have always embodied the dedication for knowledge and truth. Their love for the written and verbal word transcends mere information dissemination; but a passionate commitment to tell stories that capture the essence of human experience and foster an understanding to our societal events.
Journalists are not limited by words, we also have our creatives and impactful visuals that resonate to written articles and narratives. These artistic creations breathe much more life to the words that amplify a strong connection with the readers and viewers. In essence, journalists serve as
catalysts for progress, empowered and fueled by their own hearts; their passion for information, dedication to craft, and love for the publication.
It was the warm noon and students have occupied the room as busy ants in a colony. Running out of ideas, I sat on a chair in the corner to create a publication material for the school event, brainstorming for a new style—an another bustling day for us student journalists. As I opened Photoshop, I began to paste their articles, add more layers, filling up my canvas. Yet, by the doorstep of the room, she suddenly entered, and she caught my eye. There she was roaming around, with her camera taking shots of my fellows. She stopped by to a laptop and a new file of photos were just sent on my end. Truthfully, I have always found myself captivated by this photojournalist’s captures, as if capturing something within me which I couldn’t simply ignore. Something that quite feels like a connection to the person behind the lens. Photos she uploaded, my layout began to see its destination. She was my photojournalist.

In the realm of student journalism, the gifts bestowed upon its practitioners are not material in nature; rather, they are the intangible rewards of knowledge, experience, and personal growth. Through their work, student journalists are given the gift of insight—the opportunity to explore new perspectives, uncover hidden truths, and broaden their understanding of the world around them. They are also gifted with the invaluable opportunity to make a difference, to leave their mark on the world through the power of storytelling and the pursuit of truth.
Down with Eros’ magic, and up with love’s true affections; away with Psyche’s coyness, and come with the soul’s gratitude.
Hearts, roses and chocolates have come to the open arms of couples. It’s time for journalists to share a gift as well.
Though material gifts are typical in expressing emotions to an equal or a beloved, journalists write truths in notes, letters and articles for the people’s knowledge.
Whether Eros or Psyche writes from the heart or the soul, material wealth or not, the true value is in symbolism.
No matter if a journalist is personally single or otherwise, never are they in solitude. The value of quill is a value to the community.
So in this moment of giving, a journalist gifts their peer with an article: “Down with Eros’ magic and up with love’s true affections; Away with Psyche’s coyness and come with the soul’s gratitude.…”

“Lights, camera, click.”
I was the soft amber fragrance of the powder puff pressed against her cheek. The young teenager took her phone and pressed her dainty fingers against the screen. She then went on streaming and harbored applause in the form of floating likes and hearts. Consistent and persistent, she did her effortless performance of little dances and pep talks in a circus-like world called social media. This is her pursuit of fame, a chase for clout. However, behind her light makeup lies a thicker one that resembles a clown’s.
Fooling the Audience
Clowns are comical entertainers who exaggerate their gestures and expressions in front of their audience. In a familiar context, clout chasers often stage their performances and usually have a different persona when faced in front of a camera. People online are also amused by these unrealistic posts, leaving clout chasers to further fake theirselves.
Acting on the Tightrope
Some clowns are professional enough to walk on death-defying tightropes, which definitely requires skill to master. Clout chasing is no joke. One who chases for clout should be consistent and a persevered content creator - but there are consequences. To cancel a clout chaser is like falling off the tightrope where one can suffer from online judgements. Furthermore, there are instances that clout chasers expose themselves to harm on purpose, only to slip off and may perish in literal death.
At first I didn’t want to do it. was scared.
My legs were spread open by hands I was unfamiliar with. His fingernails raked my skin—roaming all over what he hadn’t marred.
It felt forced, but I loved him while he accepted me for who was. Unlike interacting online, being able to see each other was far better than we had expected.
His calloused hands left a blazing trail of unease the more he explored my untainted parts. I couldn’t breathe. It was beginning to feel stuffy, clouded— wrong.
Suddenly, everything turned upside-down.
Everything that I had imagined of him was now being ripped apart. He should be the one.
“Why couldn’t you do good? We earned nothing today.” His hand was already inside my shirt, gripping my waist while the other raised my leg higher, aiming to expose my womanhood.
I couldn’t muster a word out. Tears started welling up, knowing full well what would happen.
“I don’t think our sponsors would mind if your belly grew.” The tears only fell before he plunged himself inside me.
Diving deep behind the smiles of the children in the Philippines, Anti-Online Sexual Abuse of Exploitation of Children (OSAEC) goes unnoticed along with cases of sexual assault that is prominent in poorly developed areas. With these as a leading cause to the-ever-growing teenage pregnancies and abuse, even children aren’t excluded in the radars of predators.

Tick-tock, tick-tock… Late nights, computer lights, and… COFFEE.
As I struggled with a pile of academic work, I glanced at the wall and was taken aback by the time: two o’clock in the morning. Reaching for my fifth cup seems to be leading to a pervasive addiction.
Juggling inside the Algorithm
Clowns are known to juggle in shows that create utter impressions. Clout chasers are quite the similar jesters who juggle likes, hearts and shares to be validated in the labyrinth of the algorithm. Can clowns still be called clowns if no one cheers or laughs at them? Can clout chasers still chase for clout if they can’t have likes and interactions? .
Washing off the Makeup
Behind these clowns’ jolly faces, are the anxious hearts of chasing after methods on how to successfully boost their engagements online. Clout chasers can be fools who seek virtual attention and attain that, only to exist in the digital realm. Yet, these unrealistic numbers are sufficient enough for these modern clowns to continue and further populate the online circus.
This leads us netizens to be wary of their authenticity and potential harm they can bring to us and to themselves as well.
“Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls!”
“Welcome to our modern social media circus, where pixelated performances are shown.”
“Where algorithm decides validity, content is for attention, and the facade of today’s humanity - starring our clowns who chase for clout!”

“Is someone in there?”
Iasked while patiently standing outside the school’s comfort room, waiting for my turn to take a whizz. After a while, the boy inside slammed the door open. As I hurriedly went inside to do my business, I gasped as I noticed a thick smoke filling the atmosphere of the cubicle.
What originated as a smoking cessation aid has quickly become a popular and addictive product in its own right. In the last few years, vaping has become significantly more popular among teenagers.
Emergence of vaping culture
According to Coffee Affection, Filipinos are considered heavy coffee drinkers. Without a doubt, if we’re not strangled with a bundle of tasks, it’s probably just for simply savoring the drink—or for social media (SocMed) posting, considering the various trends in the modern world these days, as based on a report by Tea and Coffee, where 34% of people have ordered a custom coffee drink because they heard about it on SocMed.
A redeemer
An immense portion of this generation relies on coffee to battle heavy responsibilities, whether in school or at work. Younger individuals are commonly granted the comment that
it’s “not allowed for us.” Yet, it keeps us wide awake, especially during crucial times, such as racing against deadlines. Hence, taking a cup of joe is not bad—it redeems.
For clout
As coffee has claimed its popularity, shops, also known as cafés, have also emerged worldwide. Amusingly, scrolling through various SocMed platforms, especially on Facebook and Instagram, I’ve seen a lot of photos featuring the product and themselves drinking. If an avid user of these apps will be asked about it, it’s plainly “cloutchasing.”
Benefits and drawbacks
Consuming coffee provides some benefits. It reduces the risks of certain diseases, such as Type 2 diabetes, several types of cancer, and liver diseases, according to the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
Meanwhile, drinking high doses of caffeine have effects on both physical and mental health, some of which are
insomnia, anxiety, and more, based on Healthline Media. Additionally, by consuming coffee consistently, the body adjusts to its presence, leading to tolerance and taking an increasing amount.
According to a Philstar report, Filipinos consumed 3.05 kilograms of coffee per person in 2021.
Remarkably, coffee can have many purposes, whether in working with daily responsibilities or seeking attention. Nevertheless, taking into account the impacts of frequent consumption is also vital. Let us not abuse it, as we might face many consequences, particularly to our well-being.
Beep, beep… The sound of the alarm evoked a sense of drowsiness in me. Signaling the time, at three o’clock in the morning, I got up and fixed my desk crowded with papers and... five cups of coffee. Perhaps, it’s time to consume moderately, not addictively.
to other significant lung issues.
Did you enjoy it?
Did you voluntarily spread your legs?
These are a few of the documented questions asked to children who were exploited online, sexually assaulted—even raped by who they trusted.
Unfortunately, little Lorna isn’t the only one who stands as a victim to online sexual exploitation. Tens of thousands of kids in the Philippines are found to be victims and prey to this cesspool of pig behavior, serving as a breeding grounWd for pedophiles to come together. Evidently, the country has been ranked as second to online sexual abuse worldwide, dubbing as the “Hotspot for sexual abuse and exploitation of children”.
On the other hand, 13-year-old Maymay is one of the many kids who resides in a local area called Happyland on the outskirts of Manila. Skipping on the chinese garter with other kids, she wears a bright smile.
However, an ugly truth bellies in the area as among the spectators watching, is her 22-year-old boyfriend, who had gotten her pregnant at the age of 11 but miscarried seven months later while playing chinese garter.
“He told me to spread my legs…” eight-year-old Lorna recalls the horror she was forced to do in front of the many eyes that came to watch her, “...and rub my thighs. He was white and hairy.” she continues. It’s only a simple description yet it vividly captures what happens when the camera starts rolling live.
With the age of consent being 12, it’s one of the lowest in Southeast Asia. Like Maymay, there are more reported and unreported cases of sexual assault in the Philippines who experienced intercourse and had gotten pregnant through coercion. Because of this, some would opt to abort their unborn children despite it being illegal. Right in front of the Black Nazarene church is infamously known as the abortion market, where young mothers turn to for remedies that can induce abortion.
The rate of teenage pregnancies and online exploitation of children is still at a rise. One more story to uncover amongst the tens of thousands. Hear the children, save a smile.

Nowadays, e-cigarettes are used by a lot more teens than regular cigarettes. What made them even more attractive, are the sleek packagings and different flavors that when used it becomes more addicting. Although the marketing and sale of e-cigarettes to minors is prohibited, many teenagers still use them.
Vaping exploitations in schools
As vapor clouds quietly creep into classrooms, A bizarre occurrence that has been sweeping across school halls since the past few years has left teachers, parents, and medical professionals questioning what it means. Students use e-cigarettes more frequently, which has spurred discussions, worries, and urgent concerns.
Vaping’s pervasiveness in schools has a significant impact on both students’ academic achievement and well-being. Among the difficulties instructors encounter in vape-infested settings include disruptive behavior, diminished concentration, and addictionrelated problems. Furthermore, the normalization of vaping contributes to the continuation of a drug-using culture, which undermines initiatives to support scholastic achievement and healthy lifestyles
Health implications
The substantial nicotine content of e-cigarettes makes them very addicting. Addiction to nicotine might impair a teen’s ability to concentrate and focus. Additionally, there are chemicals in e-cigarettes that have the potential to cause cancer, and vaping has been linked

Since e-cigarettes don’t smell as strongly as traditional cigarettes do, kids can use them covertly with greater ease. Even young children who wouldn’t try cigarettes might be tempted by the device. Teenagers frequently believe that vaping has no risks, and it is simple for minors to purchase vaping supplies online.
Clouds of vapor hanging over school corridors indicate that vaping has grown to be a serious problem that has to be addressed right away. We can endeavor to create vape-free schools where children may prosper academically and living healthy, meaningful lives by increasing awareness, putting effective methods into practice, and providing a supportive environment.

Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga, the Philippines generates 61, 000 metric tons of waste each day—a great quantity, indeed. Hence, fluff fuel as a sustainable alternative, has the potential to counter this pressing issue.
In line with this, three of my classmates, Jasmine Agbon, Kristine Delumpa, and Erica Jamora, belonging to the Science, Technology, and Engineering (STE) curriculum of Doña Montserrat Lopez Memorial High School (DMLMHS) presented a study entitled “Auto Waste Segregator Machine,” which aims to efficiently separate different types of

Rappler reported that one of the upcoming impacts of El Niño involves seeking energy resources. Thus, GUUN’s fluff fuel production, both from non-recycle and hard-to-recycle wastes, will be of utmost significance in terms of shifting from solid fossil fuels such as coals as according to the National Geographic Society, burning them for energy releases toxins and greenhouse gasses like carbon dioxide.
In addition, fluff fuel, utilizing wastes for production, serves as an opportunity for common waste pickers to formally aid in sorting facilities.
Our concerns regarding the never-ending issues with waste extend beyond mere awareness. Moreover, SM Prime’s partnership with GUUN undeniably aligns with the goal of lessening landfill impacts and aiding waste pickers in various recycling and recovery efforts.
Unquestionably, fluff fuel will play as an essential bridge toward positive change. Despite the inevitable production of waste, which can nevertheless be minimized, the hefty weekly task shouldered by these trash collectors outside my home now serves a definite cause.
Bridging the Gap: Empowering Stability for Filipino Farmers
By: Sophie Antonette Cambell
The Philippines is continuously considered as one of the world’s riskiest countries due to the nation’s instability, issues with politics, and natural disasters. However, one industry is deeply affected by these problems—the agriculture industry, which is regarded as the pillar of our society by guaranteeing food security to all Filipinos.
However, despite playing a vital role in our country, Filipino agricultural laborers continue to be among the most marginalized and impoverished groups. Our farmers are particularly vulnerable to the effects of these issues because of the extreme poverty that they are experiencing.
According to the recent statistics presented by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), there are approximately 3.7 million Farmers in the country who are suffering from poverty and hunger. With this vast amount of numbers, Why do the individuals who provide the majority of food that millions of Filipinos eat on a daily basis continue to be the poorest in the country, with the majority of them living below the poverty line?

Inclusivity: At What Cost?
Is the essence of integrity of women’s sports being sacrificed for the sake of inclusivity?
In modern times, society has taken significant progress in terms of openness, and breaking the stigma surrounding transgenders. Embracing inclusivity, in 2004, transgender athletes had been given the opportunity to compete in the Olympic Games. However, the participation of Laurel Hubbard in the International Weightlifting Federation(IWF) in the women’s +87 kg division in the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, raises the question of the integrity and fairness of competitions.
While the participation of transgenders in sports is completely normal, and should not be frowned upon, trans women’s presence in the field of women’s weightlifting completely erases the essence of fair sportsmanship.
Furthermore, as women in sports were often met with ridicule, scrutiny, and belittling, the implementation of women in sports such as weightlifting was a testament surrounding their strength, and capabilities that are often overlooked as it was undermined by the stigma, and stereotype that women are weak.
sports | feature
Once, a maledominated sport, in 1987, the first ever World Championship with the presence of women was implemented in Florida. However, it was not until in the year 2000 that women’s weightlifting was incorporated into the Olympics during the Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.
Moreover, trans women and their participation in women’s division in sports completely erases the wholeness of women’s empowerment as trans women are biologically stronger than women despite their transitioning. As substantiated by the National Library of Medicine, men are biologically stronger than women due to larger fibers and a larger proportion of lean tissue distributed in the upper body.
Although, some people support trans women competing in women’s sports, as they are embraced to be women themselves; given the inclusion of trans women in feminism, as well as saying that they should be treated as women themselves, and should be given the same recognition as women.
It is completely unfair for biological men to transition into women to compete in sports primarily intended for women to showcase their talents and strength. It is imperative that one must consider the fact that sports should omit any form of unfair advantage.
Fair competition is the primary reason as to why women’s divisions
in sports are implemented–it is for women to compete fairly without being overshadowed by their male counterparts. Being a transwoman competing with greater biological male advantages completely contradicts the essence of women’s empowerment and the fairness of sportsmanship.

Moreover, one of the major problems that numerous Filipino farmers encounter is the lack of resources for gear, equipment, and machinery. A lack of information and technology access makes the situation of Filipino farmers worse as many of them do not have any access to high-quality seeds, modern farming methods, or instruction in sustainable agriculture practices. Further, they find it difficult to increase their income and resilience to disturbances from the environment and the economy without these resources.

By utilizing modern machinery and tools, farmers can be more productive while promoting sustainability in agriculture. Innovative technologies also allow them to minimize environmental damage caused by farming activities and adapt to climatic changes through drought-resistant crops or efficient irrigation systems.
There are many opportunities in modern technology to give farmers greater authority, improve productivity, and guarantee agriculture’s long-term viability. In addition, the future of food production and the advancement
By embracing technology and investing in innovation, we can help farmers overcome obstacles, reach their full potential, and build a more resilient and sustainable agriculture sector for the coming generations.
With these things in mind, it is about time we communicate appropriately the image of the very people who ensure the food on our tables—even when they struggle to feed themselves and their families. To see them in a new light does not mean overlooking the hard reality of poverty among farmers but acknowledging it and then partaking in its alleviation.
