Message from the Director
Leslie Speyers
The love of theatre is why we are all here. Whether we are watching a serious drama, a scintillating musical, or a fun-filled pantomime – they all draw us in – like a Magical Spider’s Web. Theatre has always offered players and audience the delight of communication. We strive to give you the best that we can and you respond with applause which brings us all together. It’s a privilege to be invited by PEMADS to direct this delightful production. This South African pantomime, written by the enigmatic Steven Stead (who sets Durban audiences alight every year) is young, fresh and invigorating and our cast is equally young, fresh and exhilarating.
“The love of theatre is why we are all here...”
Musicals have always been my genre, and I trust that there may be some of you in the audience who recall the wonderful world of musicals that lit up Port Elizabeth with productions such as Hello Dolly, Kismet, Oklahoma! Pirates of Penzance, Mame and The Sound of Music. I was on stage, and my late and wonderful wife, Judy, was in the orchestra pit. Our incredible symbiosis led to many happy years, and my passion for music and song has never left me. I’ll leave you with this: We’ll give ALL we’ve got from the stage and look forward to seeing happy and smiling enjoyment on your faces… which is all we need to return! That’s the beauty of amateur theatre.
Richard Campbell - Musical Director
Sian-Beth Hitchner - Choreographer
Richard has been exposed to music since he was 8. He is an NMU music graduate and his skills as a musical arranger have earned him some acclaim within and outside the PE music community, both onstage and in the concert hall. His past successes include the musical transcription of the 2011 G&S hit Oklahoma!, and Musical Director of Evita, after which he became a regular collaborator with PE G&S. His most recent credits include, Pirates of Penzance, Page to Stage, Puss in Boots, Bat Boy, The Musical and last year’s Sleeping Beauty. Richard is thrilled to be part of this exciting and vibrant show. He is currently living and teaching music in Knysna but misses his PE friends.
At the age of thirteen, she embarked on her mission to pursue her love of dance, and having graduated from the National School of Arts in Johannesburg with a distinction in Ballet, Jazz and Contemporary Dance, she was simultaneously dancing as part of the professional “Corps de Ballet” at the South African Ballet Theatre! She has her Performing Arts Licentiate through Trinity Guildhall. Sun International and various cabaret shows had Sian travelling internationally and locally, giving the audiences her special brand of charisma. Sian-Beth is also the proud owner of the Dance Mouse franchise in Port Elizabeth and provides young dancers with the opportunity to showcase their talents. Leslie Speyers’ Iconic Broadway was Sian- Beth’s introduction to PEMADS, and she has become an integral part of the local dancing community. There is no doubt that audiences will enjoy her approach to this exotic and fun-filled pantomime.
Sinbad the Sailor
Morgiana
Dame Donna Kebab
Glen McIlroy
Alieshea Anne Vanderryken
Jaydee Daniel Mulder
Stepping into the lead role of Sinbad after a heroic battle against the big “C”, Glen is determined to share his broad talent once more on the Little Theatre stage. Leslie spotted Glen playing in The Tempest at the Mannville Theatre and didn’t hesitate in casting him in Iconic Broadway where he was able to show his versatility – from Sweet Transvestite through to the touching Bring him Home from Les Misérables. The professional Dance With Me at the Opera House, again broadened his horizons, and that was when he realized that his illness forced him to step down from playing Roger in Robin Williams’ RENT. Determined to pursue his passion, Glen is happy to be leading this cast, alongside good and established friends.
A beautiful and appealing nature in this talented young lady who was trained at Oakfields in Pretoria, has the proficiency of “giving” to whatever she takes on, and shares this wholeheartedly with her fellow players. Morgiana deserves to be played with passion, maturity and understanding of what the Playwright and Director requires which Alieshea portrays with vigour. Singing brings light to her life, and this opportunity is the result of her love and dedication to the art of theatre. Alieshea was also part of the magnetic cast of RENT and is happily back in a genre that brings out the enthusiasm, animated performance and determination of sharing her talent with cast and audiences alike.
Trained in musical theatre, at Tshwane University of Technology, Jaydee has appeared on Port Elizabeth stages in brilliant performances of Franz Liebkind, the Nazi, in The Producers, and as Ryan in High School Musical. He couldn’t resist auditioning this year for RENT – his favourite musical, and filled the role of Mark with panache. Jaydee is looking forward to taking on the role of Dame Donna Kebab. His sharp awareness of character, commitment and being directed by Leslie - The Dame of Dames - should make for another great performance!
Long John Slither
Marina
Musthapha KitKat
Rob Andrews
Abigail Ranwell
David Jordaan
Rob retired from teaching at Grey last year. In his time there, he participated in their productions of Oliver!, Tom Sawyer, and Carrots. Married to Rose, with two children, Lesley and Barry, Rob enjoys playing the guitar, and continues his passion for and interest in cinema, music and musical theatre. After an invitation to meet with Leslie for a breakfast “catch up”, he found himself cast in last year’s PEMADS pantomime, Sleeping Beauty. Having enjoyed his stint in last year’s panto gave Rob the confidence to audition for this year’s production. He thoroughly enjoys being surrounded by this young, talented and enthusiastic cast, and sincerely thanks all for this great opportunity.
Abi is no newcomer to the PEMADS stage, having appeared in numerous chorus roles. Her first title role was in Puss In Boots, which she handled with aplomb. Abi’s future in musical theatre is assured, and as part of this young, enthusiastic, happy group, she is very much at home. Currently in Grade 11, Abi intends to continue with theatre in the future and doesn’t plan to stop anytime soon!
Drawn into the PEMADS fold by his wife and two daughters, David soon had an opportunity to play on stage, with his debut being in Annie. Since then, David has become an integral part of the PEMADS family, helping backstage, serving on the committee and having loads of fun acting on the Little Theatre stage. From playing a fairy last year in Sleeping Beauty to playing the pirate Mustapha this year, David reveals his versatility in this ‘larger than life’ role, and continues to enjoy his ‘Life upon the Wicked Stage’.
Silly Billy
Ameena
Genie
Daniel Hamilton
Kathleen ‘Kat’ Lilian Fouché
Matthew Hamilton
Although still at school writing Matric, Daniel has had the grounding that Alexander Road High School offers in its Drama Department. Taking Technical Drama, Daniel is able to work well both on and off stage. His acting debut was in Shrek, The Musical and he also enjoyed being part of the cast of The Crucible directed by Greg Everard. His first show for PEMADS was in last year’s Sleeping Beauty, and he is thrilled to have been cast in this enticing comic role. Again, he is with old friends, and the wonderful camaraderie that exists throughout this cast is tangible. Daniel plans to take technical theatre further abroad next year.
From a young age Kathleen has had a deep love and passion for the performing arts. Studying drama under Linda-Louise Swain afforded her the opportunity to grow and develop this passion. When she moved to Johannesburg she furthered her theatrical experience running a media and production department. Returning to Port Elizabeth several years later, she began testing the theatrical waters through a local community project: a short film in which she played an integral part both on and off the screen. It has been over a decade but once again, Kathleen is stepping back onto the stage in PE taking on the challenging role of Ameena. A role that she is honoured and thrilled to have as she rekindles her affection for the stage.
A genuine love of the theatre has resulted in this quirky and disciplined young man to be a constant performer in amateur theatre in PE. School Plays gave him the solid background he has used to realise that giving and sharing is an integral part of playing a “team game”. Matthew’s introduction to local theatre, landed him in the cast of Puss In Boots for PEMADS where he played alongside his mentor, Leslie, who Matthew claims inspires his desire to put even more energy into the challenges of a variety of characters. From Shakespeare to Pantomime - Matthew hasn’t stopped and intends pursuing his passion at every possible opportunity.
Special Thanks
Synopsis
To the Moms and Dads – thank you for the selfless fetching and carrying of our young cast during the many rehearsals and build-up to the show.
Of all the stories that have been told, in all the lands and all the languages, the greatest storyteller of all time was Queen Scheherezade, in the land of ancient Persia…
Our sincere thanks to the Newton Park Methodist Church for the use of your wonderful facilities, and the security that your premises provided during rehearsals. Grateful thanks also to the Centenary Methodist Church for providing space for Richard and the cast for singing rehearsals.
And of all the heroes of whom she tells, the greatest of one of all, was Sinbad the Sailor.
The St Andrew’s Preparatory School in Grahamstown assisted us greatly with the loan of Dimple the Dromedary’s costume. Thank you to Gilbert & Sullivan for the frontcloth and smoke machine.
