Many of us today are quite familiar with the second angel’s announcement of the fall of Babylon. We may feel that we well understand this message already and do not necessarily need to investigate it further. Yet the Lord’s messenger tells us: “There is a great work to be done for this time, and we do not half realize what the Lord is willing to do for His people. We talk about the first angel’s message, and the second angel’s message, and we think we have some understanding of the third angel’s message; but we should not be satisfied with our present knowledge. Our petitions, mingled with faith and contrition, should go up to God, for an understanding of the mysteries that God would make known to His saints. We should have a realization that unless taught by the Holy Spirit, we shall not rightly comprehend the Bible; for it is a sealed book even to the learned, who are wise in their own conceit. Jesus meant just what He said when He directed His disciples to ‘search the Scriptures.’ Searching means to compare scripture with scripture, and spiritual things with spiritual. We should not be satisfied with a superficial knowledge. We should search for the hidden treasure concealed beneath the surface, as the merchantman seeks for goodly pearls. Light, great light, will reward the diligent searcher for truth.”—The Review and Herald, June 4, 1889. [Author’s italics.]

While the second angel’s message was initially proclaimed in 1844, it will still retain its freshness and relevance until the close of human probation. In fact, the timeless principle on which it stands has existed ever since the fall of man. God has always sought to warn His beloved heritage as to the destructive nature of sin, to rightly identify it, and to urge those who would be loyal to Him to separate from its miasma. As we examine scenes from the history of God’s people in the earth, we see this timeless principle running throughout as a golden thread over a period of thousands of years. We must realize that “sin is corrupting in its nature. One man infected with its deadly leprosy may communicate the taint to thousands. Those who occupy responsible positions as guardians of the people are false to their trust, if they do not faithfully search out and reprove sin. Many dare not condemn iniquity, lest they shall thereby sacrifice position or popularity. And by some it is considered uncharitable to rebuke sin. The servant of God should never allow his own spirit to be mingled with the reproof which he is required to give; but he is under the most solemn obligation to present the word of God, without fear or favor. He must call sin by its right name” (The Signs of the Times, April 21, 1881). Dear brethren, as we study the Sabbath Bible Lessons this quarter, let us remember our great spiritual need in view of God’s call for us, and beseech the richer blessing He desires to bestow! for a headquarters and chapel in Zambia The Republic of Zambia (formerly Northern Rhodesia) is a landlocked country in south central Africa. It is bordered by Angola, Botswana, Congo (formerly Zaire), Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe. It covers an area of 290,586 square miles (752,614 square kilometers). Copper is a significant natural resource in Zambia, and agricultural products include corn, cassava, millet, beans, peanuts, and sorghum. Among the rapidly growing population of nearly 9.5 million, around 80 local languages and dialects are spoken. Although most of the people speak Bantu, English is the official language. The constitution of Zambia offers freedom of religion, and over 72% of the people are Christians. Unfortunately, the satanist churches recently entered the country, and the situation calls for a strong united front on our part to teach against the growing tide of spiritual darkness. The Seventh Day Adventist Reform Movement first reached Zambia in 1970. The work was organized in 1972, and has undergone many difficulties and hardships, operating from the homes of kind and sacrificing brethren for lack of a proper headquarters. Plans have been made to establish our field headquarters in the city of Ndola. By purchasing a residential house for offices and later building a chapel on the same plot, we should be able to minimize the overall cost of this project. In 1985, we made a request for a 13th Sabbath Offering, and are very thankful for the generosity of our brethren and friends throughout the world. We have on hand US$7,000.00. However, to complete this project we still need an additional US$25,000.00. When the First Sabbath Offering is gathered on April 3, 1999, we appeal once more to you—our brethren, sisters, friends, youth and children all over the world to kindly extend your open hand. Please give generously to help make this cenTANZANIA ter of operation for God’s work in Zambia a reality. THE CREATION OF MAN

1

March 28

Why was man created? Isaiah 43:7. What place of honor was assigned to man when he came forth from the hands of his Creator? Psalms 100:3; 8:4–6.

“God created man for His own glory, that after test and trial the human family might become one with the heavenly family.”—The SDA Bible Commentary [E. G. White Comments], vol. 1, p. 1082.

“Adam was crowned king in Eden. To him was given dominion over every living thing that God had created. The Lord blessed Adam and Eve with intelligence such as He had not given to any other creature. He made Adam the rightful sovereign over all the works of His hands.”—Ibid.

2

What reveals that man is mortal, having no innate immortality? Genesis 2:17 (last part); Job 4:17.

“The warning given to our first parents—‘In the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die’ (Genesis 2:17)—did not imply that they were to die on the very day when they partook of the forbidden fruit. But on that day the irrevocable sentence would be pronounced. Immortality was promised them on condition of obedience; by transgression they would forfeit eternal life. That very day they would be doomed to death.”— Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 60.

“IN HIS OWN IMAGE”

3

March 29

What do we understand by the declaration that “God created man in His own image” (Genesis 1:27)? Ecclesiastes 7:29.

“Man was to bear God’s image, both in outward resemblance and in character. Christ alone is ‘the express image’ (Hebrews 1:3) of the Father; but man was formed in the likeness of God. His nature was in harmony with the will of God. His mind was capable of comprehending divine things. His affections were pure; his appetites and passions were under the control of reason. He was holy and happy in bearing the image of God and in perfect obedience to His will.”—Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 45.

4

On what condition only could our first parents have remained in Paradise forever? 1 John 2:17 (last part).

“God placed man under law, as an indispensable condition of his very existence. He was a subject of the divine government, and there can be no government without law. God might have created man without the power to transgress His law; He might have withheld the hand of Adam from touching the forbidden fruit; but in that case man would have been, not a free moral agent, but a mere automaton. Without freedom of choice, his obedience would not have been voluntary, but forced. There could have been no development of character. Such a course would have been contrary to God’s plan in dealing with the inhabitants of other worlds. It would have been unworthy of man as an intelligent being, and would have sustained Satan’s charge of God’s arbitrary rule. “God made man upright; He gave him noble traits of character, with no bias toward evil. He endowed him with high intellectual powers, and presented before him the strongest possible inducements to be true to his allegiance. Obedience, perfect and perpetual, was the condition of eternal happiness. On this condition he was to have access to the tree of life.”— Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 49.

TEMPTATION AND FALL

5 6

March 30

After having revealed His will to Adam and Eve, what simple means did God choose to test their obedience? Genesis 2:16, 17. Sabbath Bible Lessons, April–June 1999

“The tree of knowledge had been made a test of their obedience and their love to God. The Lord had seen fit to lay upon them but one prohibition as to the use of all that was in the garden; but if they should disregard His will in this particular, they would incur the guilt of transgression. Satan was not to follow them with continual temptations; he could have access to them only at the forbidden tree. Should they attempt to investigate its nature, they would be exposed to his wiles. They were admonished to give careful heed to the warning which God had sent them and to be content with the instruction which He had seen fit to impart.”—Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 53.

6

What warnings should we heed from the way Satan was able to entice our first parents into sin? Genesis 3:1–6.

“Eve really believed the words of Satan, but her belief did not save her from the penalty of sin. She disbelieved the words of God, and this was what led to her fall. In the judgment men will not be condemned because they conscientiously believed a lie, but because they did not believe the truth, because they neglected the opportunity of learning what is truth. Notwithstanding the sophistry of Satan to the contrary, it is always disastrous to disobey God. We must set our hearts to know what is truth. All the lessons which God has caused to be placed on record in His word are for our warning and instruction. They are given to save us from deception. Their neglect will result in ruin to ourselves.Whatever contradicts God’s word, we may be sure proceeds from Satan.”—Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 55. ❑ Wednesday

BARRED FROM THE TREE OF LIFE

7

March 31

What was special about the tree of life, and why was it made inaccessible to man after the Fall? Genesis 2:9; 3:22–24.

“In order to possess an endless existence, man must continue to partake of the tree of life. Deprived of this, his vitality would gradually diminish until life should become extinct. It was Satan’s plan that Adam and Eve should by disobedience incur God’s displeasure; and then, if they failed to obtain forgiveness, he hoped that they would eat of the tree of life, and thus perpetuate an existence of sin and misery.”—Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 60. “Had man after his fall been allowed free access to the tree of life, he would have lived forever, and thus sin would have been immortalized. But Sabbath Bible Lessons, April–June 1999

cherubim and a flaming sword kept ‘the way of the tree of life’ (Genesis 3:24), and not one of the family of Adam has been permitted to pass that barrier and partake of the life-giving fruit. Therefore there is not an immortal sinner.”—The Great Controversy, pp. 533, 534.

8

greater evidences that you are a child of God than spasmodic piety and emotional religion.”—Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 188. [Author’s italics.]

10

Who only has immortality, and why is this important for us to always bear in mind? 1 Timothy 6:14–16; Genesis 3:4.

“Had Adam remained obedient to God, he would have continued to enjoy free access to this tree and would have lived forever. But when he sinned he was cut off from partaking of the tree of life, and he became subject to death. . . . “The only one who promised Adam life in disobedience was the great deceiver. And the declaration of the serpent to Eve in Eden—‘ Ye shall not surely die’—was the first sermon ever preached upon the immortality of the soul. Yet this declaration, resting solely upon the authority of Satan, is echoed from the pulpits of Christendom and is received by the majority of mankind as readily as it was received by our first parents. The divine sentence, ‘ The soul that sinneth, it shall die’ (Ezekiel 18:20), is made to mean: The soul that sinneth, it shall not die, but live eternally. We cannot but wonder at the strange infatuation which renders men so credulous concerning the words of Satan and so unbelieving in regard to the words of God.”—The Great Controversy, pp. 532, 533.

“The harmony of creation depends upon the perfect conformity of all beings, of everything, animate and inanimate, to the law of the Creator. God has ordained laws for the government, not only of living beings, but of all the operations of nature. Everything is under fixed laws, which cannot be disregarded. But while everything in nature is governed by natural laws, man alone, of all that inhabits the earth, is amenable to moral law. To man, the crowning work of creation, God has given power to understand His requirements, to comprehend the justice and beneficence of His law, and its sacred claims upon him; and of man unswerving obedience is required.”—Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 52. ❑ Friday

had refused them—to know the consequences of transgression.”—Counsels to Parents, Teachers, and Students, p. 12.

“If you see that students are in danger of becoming engrossed in their studies to such an extent as to neglect the study of that Book which gives them information as to how to secure the future welfare of their souls, then do not present the temptation of going deeper, of protracting the time for educational discipline. In this way all that will make the student’s education of value to the world will be sunk out of sight.”—Fundamentals of Christian Education, p. 357.

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. This is heart education, and is of more importance than the education gained merely from books. It is well and essential to obtain a knowledge of the world in which we live, but if we leave eternity out of our reckoning, we shall make a failure from which we can never recover. It will be as the knowledge gained by eating of the fruit of the forbidden tree.”—In Heavenly Places, p. 137.

SELF-RIGHTEOUSNESS

1

How may we be in danger of repeating the mistake of Eve? 1 Timothy 2:14; 2 Corinthians 11:3.

“[Satan] is constantly seeking to excite a spirit of irreverent curiosity, a restless, inquisitive desire to penetrate the secrets of divine wisdom and power. In their efforts to search out what God has been pleased to withhold, multitudes overlook the truths which He has revealed, and which are essential to salvation. Satan tempts men to disobedience by leading them to believe they are entering a wonderful field of knowledge. But this is all a deception. Elated with their ideas of progression, they are, by trampling on God’s requirements, setting their feet in the path that leads to degradation and death.”—Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 54, 55.

2

Name some ways in which we may be tempted to eat of the forbidden fruit. Colossians 2:4. What warnings should be taken to heart by ever y God-fearing family? Ephesians 5:6.

3

April 5

How may we be tr ying to cover our “nakedness” with “fig leaves” or “filthy rags”? Isaiah 64:6; Revelation 3:17.

“Naked and ashamed, [our first parents] tried to supply the place of the heavenly garments by sewing together fig leaves for a covering. “This is what the transgressors of God’s law have done ever since the day of Adam and Eve’s disobedience. They have sewed together fig leaves to cover the nakedness caused by transgression. They have worn the garments of their own devising, by works of their own they have tried to cover their sins, and make themselves acceptable with God.”—Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 311.

4

Even after we have accepted Christ, how does He warn us against the peril of self-righteousness? Matthew 12:43–45.

“Human ambition seeks for knowledge that will bring to them glory, and self-exaltation, and supremacy. Thus Adam and Eve were influenced by Satan until God’s restraint was snapped asunder, and their education under the teacher of lies began. They gained the knowledge which God

“The garnished house represents the self-righteous soul. Satan is driven out by Christ. But he returned, in the hope of finding entrance. He finds the house empty, swept, and garnished. Only self-righteousness is abiding there. ‘Then goeth he, and taketh to him seven other spirits more wicked than himself; and they enter in, and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first’ (Matthew 12:45).

“Self-righteousness is a curse, a human embellishment, which Satan uses for his glory. Those who garnish the soul with self-praise and flattery prepare the way for the seven other spirits more wicked than the first. In their very reception of the truth these souls deceive themselves. They are building upon a foundation of self-righteousness.”—The SDA Bible Commentary

SELF-SUFFICIENCY

SELF-JUSTIFICATION

5

April 6

After their disobedience, how did Adam and Eve tr y to justify themselves? Genesis 3:12, 13.

“Adam could neither deny nor excuse his sin; but instead of manifesting penitence, he endeavored to cast the blame upon his wife, and thus upon God Himself: ‘ The woman whom Thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.’ He who, from love to Eve, had deliberately chosen to forfeit the approval of God, his home in Paradise, and an eternal life of joy, could now, after his fall, endeavor to make his companion, and even the Creator Himself, responsible for the transgression. So terrible is the power of sin. “When the woman was asked, ‘What is this that thou hast done?’ she answered, ‘The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.’ ‘ Why didst Thou create the serpent? Why didst Thou suffer him to enter Eden?’—these were the questions implied in her excuse for her sin. Thus, like Adam, she charged God with the responsibility of their fall.”—Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 57, 58. [Author’s italics.]

6

How are we in danger of following the example of Adam and Eve in self-justification? Proverbs 12:15; Luke 16:15.

“The spirit of self-justification originated in the father of lies; it was indulged by our first parents as soon as they yielded to the influence of Satan, and has been exhibited by all the sons and daughters of Adam. Instead of humbly confessing their sins, they try to shield themselves by casting the blame upon others, upon circumstances, or upon God—making even His blessings an occasion of murmuring against Him.”—Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 58. 12

Sabbath Bible Lessons, April–June 1999

“Cain came before God with murmuring and infidelity in his heart in regard to the promised sacrifice and the necessity of the sacrificial offerings. His gift expressed no penitence for sin. He felt, as many now feel, that it would be an acknowledgment of weakness to follow the exact plan marked out by God, of trusting his salvation wholly to the atonement of the promised Saviour. He chose the course of self-dependence. He would come in his own merits. He would not bring the lamb, and mingle its blood with his offering, but would present his fruits, the products of his labor. He presented his offering as a favor done to God, through which he expected to secure the divine approval. Cain obeyed in building an altar, obeyed in bringing a sacrifice; but he rendered only a partial obedience. The essential part, the recognition of the need of a Redeemer, was left out.”— Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 72. [Author’s italics.]

8

Discuss ways in which we may be in danger of following the example of Cain. Matthew 15:9; Jude 10, 11.

“The class of worshipers who follow the example of Cain includes by far the greater portion of the world; for nearly every false religion has been based on the same principle—that man can depend upon his own efforts for salvation. It is claimed by some that the human race is in need, not of redemption, but of development—that it can refine, elevate, and regenerate itself. As Cain thought to secure the divine favor by an offering that lacked the blood of a sacrifice, so do these expect to exalt humanity to the divine standard, independent of the atonement. The history of Cain shows what must be the result. It shows what man will become apart from Christ. Humanity has no power to regenerate itself. It does not tend upward, toward the divine, but downward, toward the satanic.”—Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 73.

“Reason and conscience told [Cain] that Abel was in the right; but he was enraged that one who had been wont to heed his counsel should now presume to disagree with him, and that he could gain no sympathy in his rebellion.”—Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 74. “When Cain, moved by the spirit of the wicked one, saw that he could not control Abel, he was so enraged that he destroyed his life.”—Ibid., p. 77.

10

In what manner has the spirit of Cain been rekindled against God’s faithful throughout the ages? 2 Timothy 3:12; 1 John 3:13. Why should this sad fact still bring us hope today? Matthew 5:10–12.

Lesson 3

Sabbath, April 17, 1999

Apostasy Reaches a Climax “And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that ever y imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually” (Genesis 6:5).

“Fifteen centuries after the sentence pronounced upon Cain, the Universe witnessed the fruition of his influence and example, in the crime and pollution that flooded the earth.”—Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 78. “Any man, be he minister or layman, who seeks to compel or control the reason of any other man, becomes an agent of Satan, to do his work, and in the sight of the heavenly universe he bears the mark of Cain.”—The SDA Bible Commentary [E. G. White Comments], vol. 1, p. 1087.

“Wherever there are any who will stand in vindication of the righteousness of the law of God, the same spirit will be manifested against them. It is the spirit that through all the ages has set up the stake and kindled the burning pile for the disciples of Christ. But the cruelties heaped upon the follower of Jesus are instigated by Satan and his hosts because they cannot force him to submit to their control. It is the rage of a vanquished foe.”—Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 77. ❑ Friday

What is the most common cause of persecution against true Christians?

How did God and the inhabitants of other worlds view the situation existing on earth shortly before the Flood? Genesis 6:5.

“The holy inhabitants of other worlds were watching with the deepest interest the events taking place on the earth. In the condition of the world that existed before the Flood they saw illustrated the results of the administration which Lucifer had endeavored to establish in heaven, in rejecting the authority of Christ and casting aside the law of God. In those highhanded sinners of the antediluvian world they saw the subjects over whom Satan held sway. The thoughts of men’s hearts were only evil continually. Genesis 6:5. Every emotion, every impulse and imagination, was at war with the divine principles of purity and peace and love. It was an example of the awful depravity resulting from Satan’s policy to remove from God’s creatures the restraint of His holy law.”—Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 78, 79.

refuge in the ark, but they refused the gracious invitation. Abundant time was given them to turn from their sins, overcome their bad habits, and develop righteous characters. But inclination to sin, though weak at first with many, strengthened through repeated indulgence and hurried them on to irretrievable ruin. The merciful warning of God was rejected with sneers, with mockery and derision; and they were left in darkness to follow the course that their sinful hearts had chosen. But their unbelief did not hinder the predicted event. It came, and great was the wrath of God which was seen in the general ruin.”—Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 308. “ ‘As it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man’ (Luke 17:26). Men will reject the solemn message of warning in our day, as they did in Noah’s time. They will refer to those false teachers who have predicted the event and set the definite time, and will say that they have no more faith in our warning than in theirs. This is the attitude of the world today. Unbelief is widespread, and the preaching of Christ’s coming is mocked at and derided. This makes it all the more essential that those who believe present truth should show their faith by their works.”—

What restriction regarding the marriage institution did the sons of God disobey? Genesis 6:1, 2; 2 Corinthians 6:14–17.

“The race of Cain, spreading from the place of their first settlement, dispersed over the plains and valleys where the children of Seth had dwelt; and the latter, in order to escape from their contaminating influence, withdrew to the mountains, and there made their home. So long as this separation continued, they maintained the worship of God in its purity. But in the lapse of time they ventured, little by little, to mingle with the inhabitants of the valleys. This association was productive of the worst results. ‘The sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair.’ The children of Seth, attracted by the beauty of the daughters of Cain’s descendants, displeased the Lord by intermarrying with them. Many of the worshipers of God were beguiled into sin by the allurements that were now constantly before them, and they lost their peculiar, holy character. Mingling with the depraved, they became like them in spirit and in deeds; the restrictions of the seventh commandment were disregarded, ‘and they took them wives of all which they chose’ (Genesis 6:2). The children of Seth went ‘in the way of Cain’ (Jude 11); they fixed their minds upon world16

Sabbath Bible Lessons, April–June 1999

“Polygamy had been early introduced, contrary to the divine arrangement at the beginning. The Lord gave to Adam one wife, showing His order in that respect. But after the Fall, men chose to follow their own sinful desires; and as the result, crime and wretchedness rapidly increased. Neither the marriage relation nor the rights of property were respected. Whoever coveted the wives or the possessions of his neighbor, took them by force, and men exulted in their deeds of violence. They delighted in destroying the life of animals; and the use of flesh for food rendered them still more cruel and bloodthirsty, until they came to regard human life with astonishing indifference.”—Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 91, 92.

sin; and as a result, depravity and boldness in transgression are becoming all-pervading.”—The Review and Herald, June 15, 1897. “The forbearance that God has exercised toward the wicked has emboldened men in transgression; but their punishment will be none the less certain and terrible for being long delayed. [Isaiah 28:21 quoted.] To our merciful God the act of punishment is a strange act. Yet He will ‘by no means clear the guilty’ (Exodus 34:7). By terrible things in righteousness He will vindicate the authority of His downtrodden law. The very fact of His reluctance to execute justice, testifies to the enormity of the sins that call forth His judgments, and to the severity of the retribution awaiting the transgressor.”—The Signs of the Times, January 25, 1910. ❑ Wednesday

What kinds of worship did man introduce, and what are the results, even now? Psalm 115:4–8; Romans 1:22–25.

“[The antediluvians] put God out of their knowledge and worshiped the creatures of their own imagination; and as the result, they became more and more debased. The psalmist describes the effect produced upon the worshiper by the adoration of idols. He says, ‘They that make them are like unto them; so is every one that trusteth in them’ (Psalm 115:8). It is a law of the human mind that by beholding we become changed. Man will rise no higher than his conceptions of truth, purity, and holiness. If the mind is never exalted above the level of humanity, if it is not uplifted by faith to contemplate infinite wisdom and love, the man will be constantly sinking lower and lower.”—Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 91.

APOSTASY AFTER THE FLOOD

1

April 18

How was histor y repeated in the attitude taken by the descendants of Noah toward God and the truth? Romans 1:28.

“Noah, the faithful preacher of righteousness, lived for three hundred and fifty years after the Flood, Shem for five hundred years, and thus their descendants had an opportunity to become acquainted with the requirements of God and the history of His dealings with their fathers. But they were unwilling to listen to these unpalatable truths; they had no desire to retain God in their knowledge.”—Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 120. “No sooner was the earth repeopled than men resumed their hostility to God and heaven. They transmitted their enmity to their posterity, as though the art and device of misleading men, and causing them to continue the unnatural warfare, was a sacred legacy.”—The SDA Bible Commentary [E. G. White Comments], vol. 1, p. 1091.

“The Babel builders had indulged the spirit of murmuring against God. Instead of gratefully remembering His mercy to Adam and His gracious covenant with Noah, they had complained of His severity in expelling the first pair from Eden and destroying the world by a flood. But while they murmured against God as arbitrary and severe, they were accepting the rule of the cruelest of tyrants. Satan was seeking to bring contempt upon the sacrificial offerings that prefigured the death of Christ; and as the minds of the people were darkened by idolatry, he led them to counterfeit these offerings and sacrifice their own children upon the altars of their gods. As men turned away from God, the divine attributes—justice, purity, and love—were supplanted by oppression, violence, and brutality.”—Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 120–123.

How and why did God inter vene to stop the confederacy? Genesis 11:6, 7.

“This confederacy was born of rebellion against God. The dwellers on the plain of Shinar established their kingdom for self-exaltation, not for the glory of God. Had they succeeded, a mighty power would have borne sway, banishing righteousness, and inaugurating a new religion. The world would have been demoralized. The mixture of religious ideas with erroneous theories would have resulted in closing the door to peace, happiness, and security. These suppositions, erroneous theories, carried out and perfected, would have directed minds from allegiance to the divine statutes, and the law of Jehovah would have been ignored and forgotten. Determined men, inspired and urged on by the first great rebel, would have resisted any interference with their plans or their evil course. In the place of the divine precepts they would have substituted laws framed in

ANCIENT AND MODERN BABEL

5

April 20

What name was given to the place of the tower, and why? Genesis 11:8, 9.

“Through apostasy, fallen men and fallen angels are in the same confederacy, leagued to work against good. They are united in a desperate companionship. Through his evil angels, Satan contrives to form an alliance with professedly pious men, and thus he leavens the church of God. He knows that if he can induce men, as he induced the angels, to join in rebellion, under the guise of servants of God, he will have in them his most successful allies in his enterprise against heaven.”—The SDA Bible Commentary [E. G. White Comments], vol. 4, p. 1142.

8 “The schemes of the Babel builders ended in shame and defeat. The monument to their pride became the memorial of their folly. Yet men are continually pursuing the same course—depending upon self, and rejecting God’s law. It is the principle that Satan tried to carry out in heaven; the same that governed Cain in presenting his offering.”—Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 123. “The term ‘Babylon’ is derived from ‘Babel,’ and signifies confusion.”— The Great Controversy, p. 381.

6

Name some of the various ways in which people today are following the example of the Babel builders? Titus 1:16.

“There are tower builders in our time. Infidels construct their theories from the supposed deductions of science, and reject the revealed word of God. They presume to pass sentence upon God’s moral government; they despise His law and boast of the sufficiency of human reason. . . . “In the professedly Christian world many turn away from the plain teachings of the Bible and build up a creed from human speculations and pleasing fables, and they point to their tower as a way to climb up to heaven. Men hang with admiration upon the lips of eloquence while it teaches that the transgressor shall not die, that salvation may be secured without obedience to the law of God. If the professed followers of Christ would accept God’s standard, it would bring them into unity; but so long as human wisdom is exalted above His Holy Word, there will be divisions and dissension.”—Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 123, 124.

What similar danger can exist even where doctrines are pure? 1 Corinthians 10:10–12.

“I beseech all who engage in the work of murmuring and complaining because something has been said or done that does not suit them, and that does not, as they think, give them due consideration, to remember that they are carrying on the very work begun in heaven by Satan. They are following in his track, sowing unbelief, discord, and disloyalty; for no one can entertain feelings of disaffection, and keep them to himself. He must tell others that he is not treated as he should be. Thus they are led to murmur and complain. This is the root of bitterness springing up, whereby many are defiled. “Thus Satan works today through his evil angels. He confederates with men who claim to be in the faith; and those who are trying to carry forward the work of God with fidelity, having no man’s person in admiration, working without hypocrisy and partiality, will have just as severe trials brought against them as Satan can bring through those who claim to love God. Proportionate to the light and knowledge these opposers have is Satan’s success.”—The SDA Bible Commentary [E. G. White Comments], vol. 4, p. 1142. ❑ Thursday

They should even take more interest in having these well learned than in having their lessons in the day school properly prepared. In many places this matter is too much neglected. The teachers simply read over the lesson, and when they come to the Sabbath school, allow their pupils to read the answers either from the Bible or lesson paper. This course should never be taken. These inspired statements emphasize the great importance of Sabbath school studies, particularly for the younger members of God’s family. Yet, how can parents, teachers, and children prepare their studies without proper materials? In recent years, the General Conference Sabbath School Department has been pleased to offer lessons designed for the growing lambs of the Lord’s flock. The Children’s Treasures, Junior Searcher, and Youth Explorer lessons are now being printed and distributed in many areas with excellent success. We praise God for enabling this work to go forward, that little ones may be trained more thoroughly in spiritual matters. However, there is still something preventing many youngsters from receiving the benefit they should. Every effort is made to minimize all expenses in producing and distributing the lessons. The cost is still more than many families or even churches in poorer countries can afford. Shall we allow a lack of finances to hinder precious young souls from receiving the spiritual education they so much need? Yet this priceless opportunity can be made available and the cost will be covered if all of us sacrifice at least double the amount of the regular Sabbath School offering, on May 1, 1999, when we all will donate a portion of our income for this special project. After the dispersion from Babel, what spiritual condition developed in nearly all the inhabited areas of the world, including in the household of Abraham’s father? Joshua 24:2.

“After the dispersion from Babel idolatry again became well-nigh universal, and the Lord finally left the hardened transgressors to follow their evil ways, while He chose Abraham, of the line of Shem, and made him the keeper of His law for future generations. Abraham had grown up in the midst of superstition and heathenism. But the true faith was not to become extinct.”—Patriarchs and

In the providence of God, what did Terah do for the spiritual benefit of his household? Genesis 11:31. What should be our main consideration when deciding where to live?

“The gospel is a wonderful simplifier of life’s problems. Its instruction, heeded, would make plain many a perplexity and save us from many an error. It teaches us to estimate things at their true value and to give the most effort to the things of greatest worth—the things that will endure. This lesson is needed by those upon whom rests the responsibility of selecting a home. They should not allow themselves to be diverted from the highest aim. Let them remember that the home on earth is to be a symbol of and a preparation for the home in heaven. Life is a training school, from which parents and children are to be graduated to the higher school in the mansions of God. As the location for a home is sought, let this purpose direct the choice. Be not controlled by the desire for wealth, the dictates of fashion, or the customs of society. In following years, there were those among the roving Canaanites who received instruction from Abraham; and whenever one of these came to that altar, he knew who had been there before him; and when he had pitched his tent, he repaired the altar, and there worshiped the living God.”—Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 128. ❑ Thursday

How was Abraham’s faith tested after he had settled down in Canaan in obedience to God’s command? Genesis 12:10. What lesson did God want to teach Abraham as well as each of His children today?

“Abraham could not explain the leadings of Providence; he had not realized his expectations; but he held fast the promise, ‘I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing’ (Genesis 12:2). With earnest prayer he considered how to preserve the life of his people and his flocks, but he would not allow circumstances to shake his faith in God’s word. To escape the famine he went down into Egypt. He did not forsake Canaan, or in his extremity turn back to the Chaldean land from which he came, where there was no scarcity of bread; but he sought a temporary refuge as near as possible to the Land of Promise, intending shortly to return where God had placed him. “The Lord in His providence had brought this trial upon Abraham to teach him lessons of submission, patience, and faith—lessons that were to be placed on record for the benefit of all who should afterward be called to endure affliction. God leads His children by a way that they know not, but He does not forget or cast off those who put their trust in Him.”— Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 129.

“God permits trials to assail His people, that by their constancy and obedience they themselves may be spiritually enriched, and that their example may be a source of strength to others. ‘I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil’ (Jeremiah 29:11). The very trials that task our faith most severely and make it seem that God has forsaken us, are to lead us closer to Christ, that we may lay all our burdens at His feet and experience the peace which He will give us in exchange. “God has always tried His people in the furnace of affliction. It is in the heat of the furnace that the dross is separated from the true gold of the Christian character. Jesus watches the test; He knows what is needed to purify the precious metal, that it may reflect the radiance of His love. It is by close, testing trials that God disciplines His servants. He sees that some have powers which may be used in the advancement of His work, and He puts these persons upon trial; in His providence He brings them into positions that test their character and reveal defects and weaknesses that have been hidden from their own knowledge. He gives them opportunity to correct these defects and to fit themselves for His service. He shows them their own weakness, and teaches them to lean upon Him; for He is their only help and safeguard. Thus His object is attained. They are educated, trained, and disciplined, prepared to fulfill the grand purpose for which their powers were given them. When God calls them to action, they are ready, and heavenly angels can unite with them in the work to be accomplished on the earth.”—Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 129, 130. ❑ Friday

All that Lot and his family did in Sodom could have been done by them, even if they had lived in a place some distance away from the city. Enoch walked with God, and yet he did not live in the midst of any city polluted with every kind of violence and wickedness, as did Lot in Sodom.”—Evangelism, p. 78.

6 “In Sodom there was mirth and revelry, feasting and drunkenness. The vilest and most brutal passions were unrestrained. The people openly defied God and His law and delighted in deeds of violence.”—Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 157.

“The dwellers in Sodom were corrupt; vile conversation greeted [Lot’s] ears daily, and his righteous soul was vexed by the violence and crime he was powerless to prevent. His children were becoming like these wicked people, for association with them had perverted their morals. Taking all these things into consideration, the worldly riches he had gained seemed small and not worth the price he had paid for them.”— Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 110.

“The sinful conduct of [Lot’s] daughters was the result of the evil associations of that vile place. Its moral corruption had become so interwoven with their character that they could not distinguish between good and evil. Lot’s only posterity, the Moabites and Ammonites, were vile, idolatrous tribes, rebels against God and bitter enemies of His people”—Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 167, 168.

“The sinful conduct of [Lot’s] daughters after leaving Sodom was the result of wicked associations while there. The sense of right and wrong was confused in their minds, and sin did not appear as sin to them.”— Testimonies, vol 4., p. 112.

What can we learn from the consistent attitude of Lot while he lived in Sodom? Genesis 19:1–3; Hebrews 13:2.

“How reluctant was Lot to obey the angel and go as far as possible from corrupt Sodom, appointed to utter destruction! He distrusted God and pleaded to remain. Living in the wicked city had weakened his faith and confidence in the justice of the Lord. He pleaded that he could not do as he was required, lest some evil should overtake him, and he should die. Angels were sent on a special mission to save the lives of Lot and his family; but Lot had so long been surrounded by corrupting influences that his sensibilities were blunted, and he could not discern the works of God and His purposes; he could not trust himself in His hands to do His bidding. He was continually pleading for himself, and this unbelief cost him the life of his wife.”—Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 111. ❑ Thursday

A WARNING FOR OUR DAYS

9

May 6

Give the reasons why the attitude of Lot’s wife should be taken as a warning in these last days. Luke 17:32.

“The wife of Lot was a selfish, irreligious woman, and her influence was exerted to separate her husband from Abraham. But for her, Lot would not have remained in Sodom, deprived of the counsel of the wise, God-fearing patriarch. The influence of his wife and the associations of that wicked city would have led him to apostatize from God had it not been for the faithful instruction he had early received from Abraham. The marriage of Lot and his choice of Sodom for a home were the first links in a chain of events fraught with evil to the world for many generations.”— Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 174.

“While [Lot’s wife’s] body was upon the plain, her heart clung to Sodom, and she perished with it. She rebelled against God because His judgments involved her possessions and her children in the ruin. Although so greatly favored in being called out from the wicked city, she felt that she was severely dealt with, because the wealth that it had taken years to accumulate must be left to destruction. Instead of thankfully accepting deliverance, she presumptuously looked back to desire the life of those who had rejected the divine warning.”—Ibid., p. 161.

10

34

“The flames that consumed the cities of the plain shed their warning light down even to our time. We are taught the fearful and solemn lesson that while God’s mercy bears long with the transgressor, there is a limit beyond which men may not go on in sin. When that limit is reached, then the offers of mercy are withdrawn, and the ministration of judgment begins.”—Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 162–165. “Licentiousness is the special sin of this age. Never did vice lift its deformed head with such boldness as now. The people seem to be benumbed, and the lovers of virtue and true goodness are nearly discouraged by its boldness, strength, and prevalence. The iniquity which abounds is not merely confined to the unbeliever and the scoffer. Would that this were the case, but it is not. Many men and women who profess the religion of Christ are guilty. Even some who profess to be looking for His appearing are no more prepared for that event than Satan himself. They are not cleansing themselves from all pollution. They have so long served their lust that it is natural for their thoughts to be impure and their imaginations corrupt. It is as impossible to cause their minds to dwell upon pure and holy things as it would be to turn the course of Niagara and send its waters pouring up the falls.”—Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 346. ❑ Friday

GOD’S NAME BROUGHT TO EGYPT

1

May 9

How was Joseph instrumental in bringing the name and knowledge of God to Egypt? Genesis 41:16, 28, 32, 38, 39; Psalm 105:17, 22.

“Not to the people of Egypt alone, but to all the nations connected with that powerful kingdom, God manifested Himself through Joseph. He desired to make him a light bearer to all peoples, and He placed him next the throne of the world’s greatest empire, that the heavenly illumination might extend far and near. By his wisdom and justice, by the purity and benevolence of his daily life, by his devotion to the interests of the people—and that people a nation of idolaters—Joseph was a representative of Christ. In their benefactor, to whom all Egypt turned with gratitude and praise, that heathen people, and through them all the nations with which they were connected, were to behold the love of their Creator and Redeemer.”—Testimonies, vol. 6, pp. 219, 220.

Though Joseph could have obtained for his brothers high positions in the Egyptian government, what did he advise and why? Genesis 47:2–6.

“Joseph, true to the worship of Jehovah, sought to save his brothers from the temptations to which they would be exposed at a heathen court; therefore he counseled them, when questioned by the king, to tell him frankly their occupation. The sons of Jacob followed this counsel, being careful also to state that they had come to sojourn in the land, not to become permanent dwellers there, thus reserving the right to depart if they chose.”—Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 233. “Under Joseph’s fostering care, and the favor of the king who was then ruling, [the Israelites] had spread rapidly over the land. But they had kept themselves a distinct race, having nothing in common with the Egyptians in customs or religion.”—Ibid., p. 242.

dent, he could not be induced to participate in the worship of the gods. He was threatened with the loss of the crown, and warned that he would be disowned by the princess should he persist in his adherence to the Hebrew faith. But he was unshaken in his determination to render homage to none save the one God, the Maker of heaven and earth. He reasoned with priests and worshipers, showing the folly of their superstitious veneration of senseless objects. None could refute his arguments or change his purpose, yet for the time his firmness was tolerated on account of his high position and the favor with which he was regarded by both the king and the people.”—Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 245.

He leads men to account for the miracles of Christ by making them appear to be the result of human skill and power.”—Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 264, 265.

When the time came for Israel to be delivered from bondage, how did Pharaoh lift up his heart against Heaven? Exodus 5:2. What warning should we take from the king’s rebellion?

“When the Egyptians, from the king upon his throne down to the lowliest servant, were afflicted, and their firstborn were slain, then there was wailing throughout all Egypt. Then Pharaoh remembered his proud boast, [Exodus 5:2 quoted]. He humbled himself and went with his counselors and his rulers to Goshen in haste, and bowed before Moses and Aaron, and bid them go and serve their God. . . . “There was quite a large number of the Egyptians who were led to acknowledge, by the manifestations of the signs and wonders shown in Egypt, that the God of the Hebrews was the only true God. They entreated to be permitted to come to the houses of the Israelites with their families, upon that fearful night when the angel of God should slay the firstborn of the Egyptians. They were convinced that their gods whom they had worshiped were without knowledge, and had no power to save or to destroy. And they pledged themselves to henceforth choose the God of Israel as their God. They decided to leave Egypt, and go with the children of Israel to worship their God. The Israelites welcomed the believing Egyptians to their houses.”—The SDA Bible Commentary [E. G. White Comments],

6

“By rejecting light from heaven, [Pharaoh] became hard and unimpressible. The providence of God was revealing His power, and these manifestations, unacknowledged, were the means of hardening Pharaoh’s heart against greater light. Those who exalt their own ideas above the plainly specified will of God, are saying as did Pharaoh, ‘ Who is the Lord, that I should obey His voice?’ Every rejection of light hardens the heart and darkens the understanding; and thus men find it more and more difficult to distinguish between right and wrong, and they become bolder in resisting the will of God.”—The SDA Bible Commentary [E. “In the sixth year of the reign of Zedekiah, the Lord revealed to Ezekiel in vision some of the abominations that were being practiced in Jerusalem, and within the gate of the Lord’s house, and even in the inner court. The chambers of images, and the pictured idols, ‘every form of creeping things, and abominable beasts, and all the idols of the house of Israel’—all these in rapid succession passed before the astonished gaze of the prophet (Ezekiel 8:10). “Those who should have been spiritual leaders among the people, ‘the ancients of the house of Israel,’ to the number of seventy, were seen offering incense before the idolatrous representations that had been introduced into hidden chambers within the sacred precincts of the temple court. ‘The Lord seeth us not,’ the men of Judah flattered themselves as they engaged in their heathenish practices; ‘the Lord hath forsaken the earth,’ they blasphemously declared (Verses 11, 12).”—Prophets and Kings, p. 448.

Captivity and Deliverance Fr om Babylon

In what ways does the histor y of Israel’s sojourn in Egypt teach us about God’s mercy? Ezekiel 20:7; Romans 15:4.

“Though the Egyptians had so long rejected the knowledge of God, the Lord still gave them opportunity for repentance. In the days of Joseph, Egypt had been an asylum for Israel; God had been honored in the kindness shown His people; and now the long-suffering One, slow to anger, and full of compassion, gave each judgment time to do its work; the Egyptians, cursed through the very objects they had worshiped, had evidence of the power of Jehovah, and all who would, might submit to God and escape His judgments. The bigotry and stubbornness of the king resulted in spreading the knowledge of God, and bringing many of the Egyptians to give themselves to His service. “It was because the Israelites were so disposed to connect themselves with the heathen and imitate their idolatry that God had permitted them to go down into Egypt, where the influence of Joseph was widely felt, and where circumstances were favorable for them to remain a distinct people. Here also the gross idolatry of the Egyptians and their cruelty and oppression during the latter part of the Hebrew sojourn should have inspired in them an abhorrence of idolatry, and should have led them to flee for refuge to the God of their fathers.”—Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 333.

CONSEQUENCES OF APOSTASY

3

May 17

What punishment did God permit to come upon Judah as a result of their apostasy? 2 Chronicles 36:14–20.

“The king did not compel the Hebrew youth to renounce their faith in favor of idolatry, but he hoped to bring this about gradually. By giving them names significant of idolatry, by bringing them daily into close association with idolatrous customs, and under the influence of the seductive rites of heathen worship, he hoped to induce them to renounce the religion of their nation and to unite with the worship of the Babylonians.”— Prophets and Kings, p. 481.

“At the time of the final overthrow of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar, many had escaped the horrors of the long siege, only to perish by the sword. Of those who still remained, some, notably the chief of the priests and officers, and the princes of the realm, were taken to Babylon and there executed as traitors.”—Prophets and Kings, pp. 459, 460.

4

How does Jeremiah describe the beginning of the Babylonian captivity, and why did this punishment have to be administered? Jeremiah 25:5–11.

6

How was the faith of the young Hebrews tried at the ver y beginning? Daniel 1:8–14. Explain how and why they revealed a decided advantage over the other students. Daniel 1:17–20.

“A portion having been offered to idols, the food from the king’s table was consecrated to idolatry; and one partaking of it would be regarded as offering homage to the gods of Babylon. In such homage, loyalty to Jehovah forbade Daniel and his companions to join. Even a mere pretense of eating the food or drinking the wine would be a denial of their faith.”— Prophets and Kings, p. 481.

“The children of Israel were taken captive to Babylon because they separated from God, and no longer maintained the principles that had been given to keep them free from the methods and practices of the nations who dishonored God. The Lord could not give them prosperity, he could not fulfill His covenant with them, while they were untrue to the principles He had given them zealously to maintain. By their spirit and their actions they misrepresented His character, and He permitted them to be taken captive. Because of their separation from Him, He humbled them. He left them to their own ways, and the innocent suffered with the guilty. “The Lord’s chosen people proved themselves untrustworthy. They showed themselves to be selfish, scheming, dishonorable. . . . “Why did [the Lord] permit His people to be overcome by their enemies and carried into heathen lands?—It was because they had failed to be His missionaries.”—The SDA Bible Commentary [E. G. White Comments], vol. 2, p. 1040.

“[Daniel’s request] was not preferred in a defiant spirit, but was solicited as a great favor. . . . Daniel and his companions . . . were courteous, kind, respectful, possessing the grace of meekness and modesty. And now as Daniel and his fellows were brought to the test, they placed themselves fully on the side of righteousness and truth. They did not move capriciously, but intelligently. They decided that as flesh meat had not composed their diet in the past, neither should it come into their diet in the future.”—In Heavenly Places, p. 261.

TRIAL BY FIRE

7

May 19

What test came upon three of the young Hebrews after the interpretation of Nebuchadnezzar’s dream? Daniel 3:12–18, 23–25. 43

“The appointed day came, and a vast concourse from all ‘people, nations, and languages,’ assembled on the plain of Dura. In harmony with the king’s command, when the sound of music was heard, the whole company ‘fell down and worshiped the golden image’ (Daniel 3:7). On that eventful day the powers of darkness seemed to be gaining a signal triumph; the worship of the golden image bade fair to become connected permanently with the established forms of idolatry recognized as the state religion of the land. Satan hoped thereby to defeat God’s purpose of making the presence of captive Israel in Babylon a means of blessing to all the nations of heathendom. “But God decreed otherwise. Not all had bowed the knee to the idolatrous symbol of human power. In the midst of the worshiping multitude there were three men who were firmly resolved not thus to dishonor the God of heaven. Their God was King of kings and Lord of lords; they would bow to none other.”—Prophets and Kings, p. 506.

8

How will the essence of Daniel 3:6 be repeated in these last days? Revelation 13:11, 14, 15.

“Trial and persecution will come to all who, in obedience to the Word of God, refuse to worship this false sabbath. Force is the last resort of every false religion. At first it tries attraction, as the king of Babylon tried the power of music and outward show. If these attractions, invented by men inspired by Satan, failed to make men worship the image, the hungry flames of the furnace were ready to consume them. So it will be now. The papacy has exercised her power to compel men to obey her, and she will continue to do so. We need the same spirit that was manifested by God’s servants in the conflict with paganism.”—The SDA Bible Commentary [E. G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 976.

When the Babylonian captivity was to end, what message came to the Hebrew exiles? Jeremiah 51:6, 45. How does this message include today a solemn duty for all who accept God’s gracious deliverance from spiritual Babylon? 2 Corinthians 6:17, 18.

“As the captive exiles heeded the message, ‘Flee out of the midst of Babylon’ (Jeremiah 51:6), and were restored to the Land of Promise, so those who fear God today are heeding the message to withdraw from spiritual Babylon. . . . “The hour of God’s judgment has come, and upon the members of His church on earth rests the solemn responsibility of giving warning to those who are standing as it were on the very brink of eternal ruin. “Prophecy has traced the rise and fall of the world’s great empires— Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, and Rome. With each of these, as with nations of less power, history repeated itself. Each had its period of test, each failed, its glory faded, its power departed, and its place was occupied by another. “While the nations rejected God’s principles, and in this rejection wrought their own ruin, it was still manifest that the divine, overruling purpose was working through all their movements.”—Education, p. 177. “Instead of being a protector of men, Babylon became a proud and cruel oppressor.”—Ibid., p. 176.

May 24

How is the character of modern Babylon depicted? Revelation 17:6; 18:24.

“Let none deceive themselves. The papacy that Protestants are now so ready to honor is the same that ruled the world in the days of the Reformation, when men of God stood up, at the peril of their lives, to expose her iniquity. She possesses the same pride and arrogant assumption that lorded it over kings and princes, and claimed the prerogatives of God. Her spirit is no less cruel and despotic now than when she crushed out human liberty and slew the saints of the Most High.”—The Great Controversy, p. 571.

“The Roman Catholic Church, with all its ramifications throughout the world, forms one vast organization under the control, and designed to serve the interests, of the papal see. Its millions of communicants, in every country on the globe, are instructed to hold themselves as bound in allegiance to the pope. Whatever their nationality or their government, they are to regard the authority of the church as above all other. Though they may take the oath pledging their loyalty to the state, yet back of this lies the vow of obedience to Rome, absolving them from every pledge inimical to her interests.”—The Great Controversy, p. 580.

“By perverted conceptions of the divine attributes, heathen nations were led to believe human sacrifices necessary to secure the favor of Deity; and horrible cruelties have been perpetrated under the various forms of idolatry. “The Roman Catholic Church, uniting the forms of paganism and Christianity, and, like paganism, misrepresenting the character of God, had resorted to practices no less cruel and revolting. In the days of Rome’s supremacy there were instruments of torture to compel assent to her doctrines. There was the stake for those who would not concede to her claims. There were massacres on a scale that will never be known until revealed in the judgment. Dignitaries of the church studied, under Satan their master, to

What influence did the doctrines of ancient Babylon exert upon other nations? Jeremiah 51:7. Who were her wise men, and what was the basis of their spiritualistic doctrines and practices? Isaiah 47:12, 13.

“Nearly all forms of ancient sorcery and witchcraft were founded upon a belief in communion with the dead. Those who practiced the arts of necromancy claimed to have intercourse with departed spirits, and to obtain through them a knowledge of future events. This custom of consulting the dead is referred to in the prophecy of Isaiah: ‘ When they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead?’ (Isaiah 8:19). “This same belief in communion with the dead formed the cornerstone of heathen idolatry. The gods of the heathen were believed to be the deified spirits of departed heroes. Thus the religion of the heathen was a worship of the dead.”—Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 684. [Author’s italics.]

6

What is the symbolic “wine” with which modern Babylon has inebriated the world? Revelation 17:2–4.

“The great sin charged against Babylon is that she ‘made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication’ (Revelation 14:8). This cup of intoxication which she presents to the world represents the false doctrines that she has accepted as the result of her unlawful connection with the great ones of the earth. Friendship with the world corrupts her faith, and in her turn she exerts a corrupting influence upon the world by teaching doctrines which are opposed to the plainest statements of Holy Writ.”—The Great Controversy, p. 388. “Through the two great errors, the immortality of the soul and Sunday sacredness, Satan will bring the people under his deceptions. While the former lays the foundation of spiritualism, the latter creates a bond of sym48

pathy with Rome. The Protestants of the United States will be foremost in stretching their hands across the gulf to grasp the hand of spiritualism; they will reach over the abyss to clasp hands with the Roman power; and under the influence of this threefold union, this country will follow in the steps of Rome in trampling on the rights of conscience.”—Ibid, p. 588.

AMBITIOUS ASPIRATIONS

May 26

What was the ambition of ancient Babylon? Isaiah 47:7. Yet, what was God’s declaration, and why? Isaiah 47:5; 13:18–22.

“Had the rulers of Babylon—that richest of all earthly kingdoms— kept always before them the fear of Jehovah, they would have been given wisdom and power which would have bound them to Him and kept them strong. But they made God their refuge only when harassed and perplexed. At such times, failing to find help in their great men, they sought it from men like Daniel—men who they knew honored the living God and were honored by Him. To these men they appealed to unravel the mysteries of Providence; for though the rulers of proud Babylon were men of the highest intellect, they had separated themselves so far from God by transgression that they could not understand the revelations and the warnings given them concerning the future. “In the history of nations the student of God’s word may behold the literal fulfillment of divine prophecy. Babylon, shattered and broken at last, passed away because in prosperity its rulers had regarded themselves as independent of God, and had ascribed the glory of their kingdom to human achievement.”—Prophets and Kings, pp. 501, 502. “ ‘The broad walls of Babylon’ became ‘utterly broken, and her high gates . . . burned with fire’ (Jeremiah 51:58). Thus did Jehovah of hosts ‘cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease,’ and lay low ‘the haughtiness of the terrible.’ Thus did ‘Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the beauty of the Chaldees’ excellency,’ become as Sodom and Gomorrah—a place forever accursed (Isaiah 13:11, 19).”—Ibid., pp. 532, 533.

“The so-called Christian world is to be the theater of great and decisive actions. Men in authority will enact laws controlling the conscience, after the example of the papacy. FINAL REWARD: DESTRUCTION

How did prophecy accurately foresee the final reward that was reser ved for ancient Babylon? Jeremiah 51:8, 25, 29, 43.

9

“From the rise and fall of nations as made plain in the books of Daniel and the Revelation, we need to learn how worthless is mere outward and worldly glory. Babylon, with all its power and magnificence, the like of which our world has never since beheld—power and magnificence which to the people of that day seemed so stable and enduring—how completely has it passed away! As ‘the flower of the grass,’ it has perished (James 1:10).”—Prophets and Kings, p. 548.

10

What does prophecy say about the final destruction of modern Babylon? Revelation 17:16; 18:8, 15–21. Why will God destroy her? Revelation 18:5, 6.

“[Revelation 18:11, 3, 15–17 quoted.] Such are the judgments that fall upon Babylon in the day of the visitation of God’s wrath. She has filled up the measure of her iniquity; her time has come; she is ripe for destruction.”—The Great Controversy, p. 653. ❑ Friday

Sabbath, June 5, 1999

First Sabbath Of fering for a headquarters and chapel in Australia Australia is a large island continent in the South Pacific covering an area of 2,967,909 square miles (7,686,849 square kilometers). It embraces a wide range of differing climates and landscapes, including some beautiful and lush green areas of tropical rain forest, fertile plains, alpine areas, as well as the large desert areas. The country is well known for its wool and mining production, and more recently for tourism. The population of around 18 million is comparatively small for this large continent. Among the Australian people, 74% profess Christianity, 12.9% confess no religion, and the remainder assert other faiths. The message of reformation was brought to this country in 1938. By God’s help the work was quickly established throughout the country and the first center was purchased in 1941 in the city of Sydney. A few years later a health clinic was added to the complex. This center served until the move was made to a larger property in 1964. Existing buildings were converted to serve as offices, a printing workshop, a small chapel and hall, while a larger church was built through the voluntary efforts of many brethren from 1969-1971. This center still serves as our current headquarters. As this church is becoming small for our present needs and requires structural attention, the need has arisen for an improved facility. After many years of financial difficulties and the lack of suitable land, the Lord has blessed us with a property situated 45 kilometers west of Sydney not far from the railway line. On this 4-acre parcel of land our brethren plan to build the complex designed to include our union headquarters, a church, hall and other associated facilities. Future development is to include a health work and primary school as the Lord opens the way. At present we have approximately one-third of the funds needed, and we aim to start on the project soon. Many of the brethren are willing to help on a voluntary basis and donate the labor. We trust and believe that with the generous help from our brethren and friends from around the world when the INDONESIA First Sabbath Offering is gathered on June Darwin 5, 1999, we shall be able to proceed and accomplish the task of building the needed AUSTRALIA facilities and have a memorial for the honor Brisbane of our Lord. Sabbath, June 5, 1999

The Myster y of Iniquity

“This compromise between paganism and Christianity resulted in the development of ‘the man of sin’ foretold in prophecy as opposing and exalting himself above God. That gigantic system of false religion is a masterpiece of Satan’s power—a monument of his efforts to seat himself upon the throne to rule the earth according to his will.”—The Great Controversy, p. 50. ❑ Monday

“For the myster y of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way” (2 Thessalonians 2:7).

“The apostle Paul, in his second letter to the Thessalonians, foretold the great apostasy which would result in the establishment of the papal power.”—The Great Controversy, p. 49. ❑ Sunday

THE GREAT APOSTASY

1

May 30

What event, foretold by the apostle Paul, began to creep into the church in her early days? 2 Thessalonians 2:3, 7. What was the unavoidable consequence?

“Little by little, at first in stealth and silence, and then more openly as it increased in strength and gained control of the minds of men, ‘the mystery of iniquity’ carried forward its deceptive and blasphemous work. Almost imperceptibly the customs of heathenism found their way into the Christian church. The spirit of compromise and conformity was restrained for a time by the fierce persecutions which the church endured under paganism. But as persecution ceased, and Christianity entered the courts and palaces of kings, she laid aside the humble simplicity of Christ and His apostles for the pomp and pride of pagan priests and rulers; and in place of the requirements of God, she substituted human theories and traditions.”—The Great Controversy, p. 49. “After a long and severe conflict, the faithful few decided to dissolve all union with the apostate church if she still refused to free herself from falsehood and idolatry. They saw that separation was an absolute necessity if they would obey the word of God.”—Ibid., p. 45.

2

What allegation did Satan make about himself to Christ? Luke 4:5, 6. What system has he used to confirm this claim? Revelation 13:1–7.

THE SUPREMACY OF ROME

3

Sabbath Bible Lessons, April–June 1999

What is the meaning of the woman of Revelation 17 sitting upon many waters? Revelation 17:1, 6, 15.

“In the sixth century the papacy had become firmly established. Its seat of power was fixed in the imperial city, and the bishop of Rome was declared to be the head over the entire church. Paganism had given place to the papacy. The dragon had given to the beast ‘his power, and his seat, and great authority’ (Revelation 13:2). And now began the 1260 years of papal oppression foretold in the prophecies of Daniel and the Revelation (Daniel 7:25; Revelation 13:5–7). Christians were forced to choose either to yield their integrity and accept the papal ceremonies and worship, or to wear away their lives in dungeons or suffer death by the rack, the fagot, or the headsman’s ax.”—The Great Controversy, p. 54.

4

As predicted by Paul, how was the doctrine of papal supremacy established in the Roman Catholic Church? 2 Thessalonians 2:4.

“It is one of the leading doctrines of Romanism that the pope is the visible head of the universal church of Christ, invested with supreme authority over bishops and pastors in all parts of the world. More than this, the pope has been given the very titles of Deity. He has been styled ‘Lord God the Pope,’ and has been declared infallible. He demands the homage of all men.”—The Great Controversy, p. 50. ❑ Tuesday

GOD’S LAW UNDER ATTACK

5 52

May 31

June 1

How did the Roman Catholic Church tamper with the holy law of God? Daniel 7:25.

Sabbath Bible Lessons, April–June 1999

“Satan, working through unconsecrated leaders of the church, tampered with the fourth commandment also, and essayed to set aside the ancient Sabbath, the day which God had blessed and sanctified (Genesis 2:2, 3), and in its stead to exalt the festival observed by the heathen as ‘the venerable day of the sun.’ This change was not at first attempted openly. In the first centuries the true Sabbath had been kept by all Christians. They were jealous for the honor of God, and, believing that His law is immutable, they zealously guarded the sacredness of its precepts. But with great subtlety Satan worked through his agents to bring about his object.”—The Great Controversy, p. 52.

6

What fundamental truth concerning the law of God has been overlooked even by the Protestant world? Isaiah 42:21; Jeremiah 31:33; Matthew 5:17–19. How have the Protestant churches been involved in the great apostasy concerning God’s law?

“No error accepted by the Christian world strikes more boldly against the authority of Heaven, none is more directly opposed to the dictates of reason, none is more pernicious in its results, than the modern doctrine, so rapidly gaining ground, that God’s law is no longer binding upon men. Every nation has its laws, which command respect and obedience; no government could exist without them; and can it be conceived that the Creator of the heavens and the earth has no law to govern the beings He has made? Suppose that prominent ministers were publicly to teach that the statutes which govern their land and protect the rights of its citizens were not obligatory—that they restricted the liberties of the people, and therefore ought not to be obeyed; how long would such men be tolerated in the pulpit? But is it a graver offense to disregard the laws of states and nations than to trample upon those divine precepts which are the foundation of all government?”—Ibid., p. 584.

8 “Protestants now urge that the resurrection of Christ on Sunday made it the Christian Sabbath. But Scripture evidence is lacking. No such honor was given to the day by Christ or His apostles. The observance of Sunday as a Christian institution had its origin in that “mystery of lawlessness” (2 Thessalonians 2:7, RV) which, even in Paul’s day, had begun its work. Where and when did the Lord adopt this child of the papacy? What valid reason can be given for a change which the Scriptures do not sanction?”— The Great Controversy, p. 54.

THE WORLD UNDER A CURSE

7

June 2

What is the main cause of the wickedness existing in the world? Psalms 11:3; 119:53; Romans 2:23.

“Already the doctrine that men are released from obedience to God’s requirements has weakened the force of moral obligation and opened the floodgates of iniquity upon the world. Lawlessness, dissipation, and corruption are sweeping in upon us like an overwhelming tide. In the family, Satan is at work. His banner waves, even in professedly Christian households. There is envy, evil surmising, hypocrisy, estrangement, emulation, strife, betrayal of sacred trusts, indulgence of lust. The whole system of religious principles and doctrines, which should form the foundation and framework of social life, seems to be a tottering mass, ready to fall to ruin.”—The Great Controversy, p. 585.

Why is most of even the so-called Christian world under a curse? Isaiah 24:5, 6.

THE FINAL CONFLICT

9 “In seeking to cast contempt upon the divine statutes, Satan has perverted the doctrines of the Bible, and errors have thus become incorporated into the faith of thousands who profess to believe the Scriptures. The last great conflict between truth and error is but the final struggle of the long-standing controversy concerning the law of God. Upon this battle we are now entering—a battle between the laws of men and the precepts of Jehovah, between the religion of the Bible and the religion of fable and tradition.”—The Great Controversy, p. 582. 54

What must we realize about Christ’s position in the plan of salvation? John 14:6; 1 Timothy 2:5; Acts 4:12. How have attempts been made to subvert His authority?

“Instead of trusting in the Son of God for forgiveness of sins and for eternal salvation, the people looked to the pope, and to the priests and prelates to whom he delegated authority. They were taught that the pope was their earthly mediator and that none could approach God except through him; and, further, that he stood in the place of God to them and was therefore to be implicitly obeyed.”—The Great Controversy, p. 55. “Still another fabrication was needed to enable Rome to profit by the fears and the vices of her adherents. This was supplied by the doctrine of indulgences. Full remission of sins, past, present, and future, and release from all the pains and penalties incurred, were promised to all who would enlist in the pontiff’s wars to extend his temporal dominion, to punish his enemies, or to exterminate those who dared deny his spiritual supremacy.”—Ibid., p. 59.

PAGAN TEACHINGS ADOPTED

3

What does the Bible teach concerning (a) the state of the dead, and (b) the end of the wicked? How were these teachings perverted? a. Job 14:7–14; Psalm 146:4; Ecclesiastes 9:5, 6, 10. b. Psalm 37:10, 20, 38; 145:20; Revelation 20:9.

“Serious errors were . . . introduced into the Christian faith. Prominent among these was the belief in man’s natural immortality and his consciousness in death. This doctrine laid the foundation upon which Rome established the invocation of saints and the adoration of the Virgin Mary. From this sprang also the heresy of eternal torment for the finally impenitent, which was early incorporated into the papal faith. “Then the way was prepared for the introduction of still another invention of paganism, which Rome named purgatory, and employed to terrify the credulous and superstitious multitudes.”—The Great Controversy, p. 58.

4

According to Scripture, when will the righteous be vested with immortality and taken to heaven? 1 Corinthians 15:50–55; 1 Thessalonians 4:13–17; John 14:1–3. On the other hand, what does popular theology teach?

“In the professedly Christian world many turn away from the plain teachings of the Bible and build up a creed from human speculations and pleasing fables, and they point to their tower as a way to climb up to heaven.”—Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 124. “The fallen denominational churches are Babylon. Babylon has been fostering poisonous doctrines, the wine of error. This wine of error is made up of false doctrines, such as the natural immortality of the soul, the eternal torment of the wicked, the denial of the preexistence of Christ prior to His birth in Bethlehem, and advocating and exalting the first day of the week above God’s holy and sanctified day.”—Testimonies to Ministers, p. 61.

6

How did Paul and Peter warn the believers against the danger of accepting false teachings? 1 Corinthians 11:19; 2 Peter 2:1. What do many Protestant churches teach about the creation of the world, the second coming of Christ, and the millennium?

“The sophistry in regard to the world’s being created in an indefinite period of time is one of Satan’s falsehoods. God speaks to the human family in language they can comprehend. He does not leave the matter so indefinite that human beings can handle it according to their theories. When the Lord declares that He made the world in six days and rested on the seventh day, He means the day of twenty-four hours, which He has marked off by the rising and setting of the sun.”—Testimonies to Ministers, pp.

“According to the popular belief, the redeemed in heaven are acquainted with all that takes place on the earth and especially with the lives of the friends whom they have left behind. But how could it be a source of happiness to the dead to know the troubles of the living, to witness the sins committed by their own loved ones, and to see them enduring all the sorrows, disappointments, and anguish of life? MODERN HERESIES

7

June 9

Prove from the Bible that salvation is conditional. Matthew 7:21; Revelation 3:5; 22:14. Why is Universalism (the teaching that all people will finally be saved) so erroneous and dangerous to the soul?

“A large class to whom the doctrine of eternal torment is revolting are driven to the opposite error. They see that the Scriptures represent God as a being of love and compassion, and they cannot believe that He will consign His creatures to the fires of an eternally burning hell. But holding that the soul is naturally immortal, they see no alternative but to conclude that all mankind will finally be saved.”—The Great Controversy, p. 537.

8

How does the Bible conflict with the doctrine of “faith, and faith only?” James 1:22–25; 2:14–17.

“The desire for an easy religion that requires no striving, no self-denial, no divorce from the follies of the world, has made the doctrine of faith, and faith only, a popular doctrine; but what saith the word of God? . . . “The testimony of the word of God is against this ensnaring doctrine of faith without works. It is not faith that claims the favor of Heaven without complying with the conditions upon which mercy is to be granted, it is presumption; for genuine faith has its foundation in the promises and provisions of the Scriptures.”—The Great Controversy, p. 472. ❑ Thursday

OTHER DANGEROUS HERESIES

Another dangerous philosophy is the modern idea that man is self-sufficient and that he need only develop his innate powers. What does the Bible say on this? Jeremiah 13:23; John 15:5; Colossians 2:8. What is our only safety? Isaiah 8:20; Luke 11:28.

“If Satan can so befog and deceive the human mind as to lead mortals to think that there is an inherent power in themselves to accomplish great and good works, they cease to rely upon God to do for them that which they think there is power in themselves to do. They acknowledge not a superior power. They give not God the glory which He claims, and which is due to His great and excellent Majesty. Satan’s object is thus accomplished, and he exults that fallen men presumptuously exalt themselves as he exalted himself in heaven and was thrust out. He knows that if man exalts himself, his ruin is just as certain as was his own.”—Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 294. “It is the first and highest duty of every rational being to learn from the Scriptures what is truth, and then to walk in the light and encourage others to follow his example. We should day by day study the Bible diligently, weighing every thought and comparing scripture with scripture. With divine help we are to form our opinions for ourselves as we are to answer for ourselves before God.”—The Great Controversy, p. 598. ❑ Friday

3

Explain the basic dif ferences between (a) genuine revivals led by the Holy Spirit and (b) modern revivals led by another spirit. a. Ezekiel 33:15, 16; 1 Corinthians 6:11; 2 Corinthians 7: 9–11. b. Ezekiel 33:31, 32; Matthew 15:8.

“In Revelation 17 Babylon is represented as a woman—a figure which is used in the Bible as the symbol of a church, a virtuous woman representing a pure church, a vile woman an apostate church. “In the Bible the sacred and enduring character of the relation that exists between Christ and His church is represented by the union of marriage. . . . “The unfaithfulness of the church to Christ in permitting her confidence and affection to be turned from Him, and allowing the love of worldly things to occupy the soul, is likened to the violation of the marriage vow.”—The Great Controversy, p. 381.

“The term ‘Babylon’ is derived from ‘Babel,’ and signifies confusion. It is employed in Scripture to designate the various forms of false or apostate religion.”—The Great Controversy, p. 381.

“Revivals brought deep heart searching and humility. They were characterized by solemn, earnest appeals to the sinner, by yearning compassion for the purchase of the blood of Christ. Men and women prayed and wrestled with God for the salvation of souls. The fruits of such revivals were seen in souls who shrank not at self-denial and sacrifice, but rejoiced that they were counted worthy to suffer reproach and trial for the sake of Christ. Men beheld a transformation in the lives of those who had professed the name of Jesus. . . . “But many of the revivals of modern times have presented a marked contrast to those manifestations of divine grace which in earlier days followed the labors of God’s servants. It is true that a widespread interest is kindled, many profess conversion, and there are large accessions to the churches; nevertheless the results are not such as to warrant the belief that there has been a corresponding increase of real spiritual life. The light which flames up for a time soon dies out, leaving the darkness more dense than before.”—The Great Controversy, pp. 462, 463.

THE CULMINATION OF APOSTASY

7 “In those churches which [Satan] can bring under his deceptive power he will make it appear that God’s special blessing is poured out; there will be manifest what is thought to be great religious interest. Multitudes will exult that God is working marvelously for them, when the work is that of another spirit. Under a religious guise, Satan will seek to extend his influence over the Christian world.”—The Great Controversy, p. 464. ❑ Tuesday

MODERN SPIRITUALISM

5

June 15

How are many in modern Babylon giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils? 1 Timothy 4:1, 2.

Since most of the Protestant churches believe that the dead are in a state of consciousness, what are they ready to accept also? Isaiah 28:15.

“As the teachings of spiritualism are accepted by the churches, the restraint imposed upon the carnal heart is removed, and the profession of religion will become a cloak to conceal the basest iniquity. A belief in spiritual manifestations opens the door to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils, and thus the influence of evil angels will be felt in the churches.”— The Great Controversy, pp. 603, 604.

8 “The doctrine of man’s consciousness in death, especially the belief that spirits of the dead return to minister to the living, has prepared the way for modern spiritualism. . . . While professing to bring the living into communication with the dead, the prince of evil exercises his bewitching influence upon their minds. “He has power to bring before men the appearance of their departed friends. The counterfeit is perfect; the familiar look, the words, the tone, are reproduced with marvelous distinctness. Many are comforted with the assurance that their loved ones are enjoying the bliss of heaven, and without suspicion of danger, they give ear ‘to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils’ (1 Timothy 4:1).”—The Great Controversy, pp. 551, 552.

June 16

Why will the Protestant churches become completely fallen? 2 Thessalonians 2:9–12. What sin is ver y of fensive to God, especially if tolerated by those who know the present truth? Jeremiah 23:14; Ephesians 5:3.

“Spiritualism, which numbers its converts by hundreds of thousands, yea, by millions, which has made its way into scientific circles, which has invaded churches, and has found favor in legislative bodies, and even in the courts of kings—this mammoth deception is but a revival, in a new disguise, of the witchcraft condemned and prohibited of old.”—The Great

“[2 Thessalonians 2:9–11 quoted.] Not until this condition shall be reached, and the union of the church with the world shall be fully accomplished throughout Christendom, will the fall of Babylon be complete. The change is a progressive one, and the perfect fulfillment of Revelation 14:8 is yet future.”—The Great Controversy, p. 390. “The nominal churches are filled with fornication and adultery, crime and murder, the result of base, lustful passion; but these things are kept covered. Ministers in high places are guilty; yet a cloak of godliness covers their dark deeds, and they pass on from year to year in their course of hypocrisy. The sins of the nominal churches have reached unto heaven, and the honest in heart will be brought to the light and come out of them. . . . “[Commandment-keeping Adventists] profess to be standing upon the elevated platform of eternal truth, keeping all of God’s commandments; therefore, if they indulge in sin, if they commit fornication and adultery, their crime is of tenfold greater magnitude than is that of the classes I have named, who do not acknowledge the law of God as binding upon them.”—

“The Redeemer of the world declares that there are greater sins than that for which Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed. Those who hear the gospel invitation calling sinners to repentance, and heed it not, are more guilty before God than were the dwellers in the vale of Siddim. Since the Flood, God has used, to destroy wicked cities, both the water and the fire that are concealed in the earth. In the final conflagration God will in His wrath send lightning from heaven that will unite with the fire in the earth. A THREEFOLD MESSAGE OF MERCY

What must be done on earth before the end can come? Matthew 24:14. What is our individual responsibility in this work, and what object should we have in view? Ezekiel 33:7–9, 11, 15; Isaiah 55:6, 7.

What are the last three messages of the everlasting gospel to be given to the world? Revelation 14:6–11. What will follow immediately after these messages have been proclaimed? Revelation 14:14, 15.

“The first and second messages were given in 1843 and 1844, and we are now under the proclamation of the third; but all three of the messages are still to be proclaimed. It is just as essential now as ever before that they shall be repeated to those who are seeking for the truth. By pen and voice we are to sound the proclamation, showing their order, and the application of the prophecies that bring us to the third angel’s message. There cannot be a third without the first and second. These messages we are to give to the world in publications, in discourses, showing in the line of prophetic history the things that have been and the things that will be.”—Selected Messages, book 2, pp. 104, 105.

THE SECOND ANGEL AND HIS MESSAGE

5

68

June 22

What message does the second angel proclaim, and when was it first preached? Revelation 14:8. In what sense was spiritual Babylon not yet completely fallen when the message began to sound?

Sabbath Bible Lessons, April–June 1999

“The second angel’s message of Revelation 14 was first preached in the summer of 1844, and it then had a more direct application to the churches of the United States, where the warning of the judgment had been most widely proclaimed and most generally rejected, and where the declension in the churches had been most rapid. But the message of the second angel did not reach its complete fulfillment in 1844. The churches then experienced a moral fall, in consequence of their refusal of the light of the advent message; but that fall was not complete. As they have continued to reject the special truths for this time they have fallen lower and lower. Not yet, however, can it be said that ‘Babylon is fallen, . . . because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication’ (Revelation 14:8). She has not yet made all nations do this. The spirit of world conforming and indifference to the testing truths for our time exists and has been gaining ground in churches of the Protestant faith in all the countries of Christendom; and these churches are included in the solemn and terrible denunciation of the second angel. But the work of apostasy has not yet reached its culmination.”—The Great Controversy, p. 389. [Author’s italics.]

6

When apostasy is present, what historic pattern must be followed? 2 Corinthians 6:17. Accordingly, what happened in the summer of 1844?

“Those who dared not withhold from others the light which God had given them, were shut out of the churches; but Jesus was with them, and they were joyful in the light of His countenance. They were prepared to receive the message of the second angel.”—Early Writings, p. 237. “The believers found themselves in a position of great trial and perplexity. They loved their churches and were loath to separate from them; but as they saw the testimony of God’s word suppressed and their right to investigate the prophecies denied they felt that loyalty to God forbade them to submit. Those who sought to shut out the testimony of God’s word they could not regard as constituting the church of Christ, ‘the pillar and ground of the truth’ (1 Timothy 3:15). Hence they felt themselves justified in separating from their former connection. In the summer of 1844 about fifty thousand withdrew from the churches.”—The Great Controversy, p. 376. ❑ Wednesday

A REINFORCEMENT COMING IN DUE TIME

7

June 23

What special call, given in the summer of 1844, added power to the message of the second angel? Matthew 25:6.

Sabbath Bible Lessons, April–June 1999

69

“This was the midnight cry, which was to give power to the second angel’s message. Angels were sent from heaven to arouse the discouraged saints and prepare them for the great work before them. The most talented men were not the first to receive this message. Angels were sent to the humble, devoted ones, and constrained them to raise the cry, ‘Behold, the Bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet Him!’ Those entrusted with the cry made haste, and in the power of the Holy Spirit sounded the message, and aroused their discouraged brethren. This work did not stand in the wisdom and learning of men, but in the power of God, and His saints who heard the cry could not resist it. The most spiritual received this message first, and those who had formerly led in the work were the last to receive and help swell the cry, ‘Behold, the Bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet Him!’ “In every part of the land, light was given upon the second angel’s message, and the cry melted the hearts of thousands. It went from city to city, and from village to village, until the waiting people of God were fully aroused. In many churches the message was not permitted to be given, and a large company who had the living testimony left these fallen churches.”—Early Writings, p. 238.

8

Why, how, and when must the message of the fall of Babylon be repeated? Revelation 18:1, 2.

“God still has a people in Babylon; and before the visitation of His judgments these faithful ones must be called out, that they partake not of her sins and ‘receive not of her plagues.’ Hence the movement symbolized by the angel coming down from heaven, lightening the earth with his glory and crying mightily with a strong voice, announcing the sins of Babylon. In connection with his message the call is heard: ‘Come out of her, My people (Revelation 18:4).’ These announcements, uniting with the third angel’s message, constitute the final warning to be given to the inhabitants of the earth.”—The Great Controversy, p. 604.

10

What prophecy will then meet its final and complete fulfillment? John 10:16.

“The light will shine, and all who are honest will leave the fallen churches, and take their stand with the remnant.”—Early Writings, p. 261. “The people of God have accomplished their work. They have received ‘the latter rain,’ ‘the refreshing from the presence of the Lord,’ and they are prepared for the trying hour before them.”—The Great Controversy, p. 613.

REVIEW AND THOUGHT QUESTIONS

“Another mighty angel [was] commissioned to descend to the earth, to unite his voice with the third angel, and give power and force to his message. Great power and glory were imparted to the angel, and as he descended, the earth was lightened with his glory. The light which attended this angel penetrated everywhere, as he cried mightily, with a strong voice, ‘Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird’ (Revelation 18:2). The message of the fall of Babylon, as given by the second angel, is repeated, with the additional mention of the corruptions which have been entering the churches since 1844. The work of this angel comes in at the right time to join in the last great work of the third angel’s message as it swells to a loud cry.”—Early Writings, p. 277. ❑ Thursday
