NSW Metropolitan Sires List NSW Metropolitan Sires List January - February 2017
Barcia Bale
THE NSW Metropolitan Sires list has a new leader, for the first time, with Barcia Bale (March 2010 Go Wild Teddy x Princess Bale) sweeping to the lead, on individual wins, at the end of February, after his offspring won ten races at Wentworth Park during the month and he drew level with Magic Sprite on 20 wins each. Barcia Bale has dominated the Victorian Metropolitan Sires list over the past year and has been slowly climbing up the NSW list in the last six months. Looks like we will now see an interesting battle for the remainder of the year, between Barcia Bale and Magic Sprite, with several lead changes expected.

Maiden Coursing greyhounds are also eligible to compete in a Main Event if the Trainer believes the greyhound is capable – but must be nominated for the higher graded event, to be considered for selection. If required, any other greyhound that has previous Coursing wins and Coursing prize money will be considered for elevation to a higher level event to provide a full field of eight runners.
South Australian News SA coursing dates until 30 June are listed below. The remaining dates for July – September will follow once allocated. We start off our season by running 4-dog stakes – which appeases the track enthusiasts who do not wish to put their dogs in an 8-dog stake as they don’t believe they can run 3 times in the one day, even though it should be remembered that its only 2 dogs that have 3 runs, and this is certainly not a problem in Victoria. Graham Moscow 0412 243 655 This car is not a small cheapie, the car is TRAX 4WD Truck, however Graham Moscow from Greyhound Gear calls it car. The car must be safe and big enough so pups can't drag off to the dam. Theory is to course pups three to six months in a pack, a maximum of four to five times. Elite State lodge have coursed five litters this year and found this method works 100% Pups that chased in pack were all easy break ins. Wheeler kennels purchased a car and Brendan Wheeler said he was very happy with it. Longwood trainer Michael Barry has just ordered a car and Greyhound Gear are currently modifying it for him. Graham has a video of pups chasing the car, which he will email the link to, if you contact him. I have had a look at the video and it won’t take long to convince you what a fantastic product this is, and just how keenly the pups chase after it. Looks certain to be a valuable tool for breeders to educate their young pups with, and from the look of it, it will make the breakers job much easier when the pups go to him, or if you are breaking your own pups in. Why not give Graham a call and have a chat with him about this amazing product. He can then answer any of your question, discuss pricing options, delivery time etc. Graham Moscow 0412 243 655 *Also have a look at their website for your greyhound muzzles, coats, collars & leads needs

Looking Back “Maddog” down under. Launceston By Maddog McDermutt and Little Elsie Reprinted from American Greyhound Review, March 2007.
Took Little Elsie and me days to get Launceston right. At first we did not know what the natives were saying. I thought that it was probably more like Lance-Ton. We have numerous towns in the states that end in ton. We had wined and dined For pity’s sake. Hobart, visited the prison at Lawn (like mow your lawn) cess ton. Bradbury’s metaphor for retired people who insist on spending their savings and last days traveling, in the novel can now travel to Mars, and do, in droves. He calls these folks: The Dried Apricot People. The Dried Apricot People went to Tasmania. For pity’s sake. Little Elsie and I said good-bye to Hobart and hopped a bus headed north, for about a 2 1/2 hour drive up the eastern seacoast of Tasmania to the Cole’s Bay turnoff where we switched buses and proceeded to drive by the nesting grounds of some 10,000 indigenous Black Swans. They say there have been as many as 50,000 Black Swans counted in one site. The Black Swan, the only totally black-swan in the world, is the official bird Home of the Tasmanian Turf Club, The Launceston of Western Australia. Little Elsie (right) with two new Australian friends…
On one of our bus rides, the driver’s phone rang, he slammed on the brakes, pulled over, stopped, and we passengers all sat there, startled, breathless, while our driver fielded the call. It must have been telemarketing, as the driver, polite beyond polite, kept saying, No thank you, No, no thank you, and finally he said he was just the baby sitter, and he logged off and the bus pulled away from the curb and away we went. We pulled our suitcases through the gate, walked around the outside of the track, headed for the grandstands, and found Hobart acquaintances Al Clark, Nicole and Karen Howard, and it was back at the races again. We met Richard Stamford, Liaison Officer of the Launceston Greyhound Racing Club and Peter Wesley, whom we had already met at Hobart, in what was called the Race Night Office. Now here was a striking difference. We have track stores here and there that sell t-shirts, coffee mugs with pictures of dogs, and such. This Tasmanian track store’s shelves were filled with everything from bandages, leads and collars, bed mats, vitamins and minerals, electrolytes, worming tablets to kibble and biscuits, just to name a few. Something like the NGA’s back yellow page of The Greyhound Review. Peter said that the store was set up by the Club to provide supplies that can be purchased conveniently on race/trial night and on certain times during the day, rather than have to make a special trip to a rural store. All three Tasmanian clubs, Hobart, Launceston, Devonport, provide a store. I asked Peter what a Liaison Officer did. I mean, the word has several meanings, you know. Peter said, “Richard is basically the Club’s contact between the Committee and the public, sponsors and service personnel, and so on. A Secretary by another
name, one could even call him a "go-between." Richard is charged with ensuring the Committee’s requirements are carried out, ensuring everything is organized and arranged for meetings, sponsors are being looked after, and any problems with facilities are reported to the appropriate persons for attention.” “Who owns the Launceston track?” I asked. Peter said, “The track and facilities are owned and managed by Tote Tasmania, with the Club renting the facilities to conduct trials and race meetings.” “So Little Elsie and I could bring over a dog and race here in Tasmania?” I asked. Peter said, “To race a Greyhound in Tasmania you must be registered as the owner (and trainer if that is the case). There is no requirement to be a member of any Club. However, all registrations, both people and Greyhounds, are issued by Racing Services Tasmania. You cannot race a Greyhound unless it is registered, the owner and trainer are registered, the catcher and handler are registered, and it is nominated in accordance with the rules. Once so registered you can race at any track.” For pity’s sake. Later, at our table in the Launceston clubhouse, we were introduced to Doug and Pam Cassidy, and they joined us. There was an immediate interest in American stud dogs, namely Fortified Speed and Fortified Rush, both on mainland Australia. Neither of us were sure of the family tree of these two dogs. As it turned out, Fortified Speed is the father of Fortified Rush. Throughout our nice visit with Doug and Pam Cassidy, nobody ever breathed a word that Pam was Chairman of the Australian Greyhound Racing Association (AGRA). Here we were, visiting with the head cook and bottle washer of the whole works, and I never knew the difference. When I later found this out, back home, via email, I mentioned it to Peter Wesley, and he said, “Oh that’s just like Pam.” Additionally, and I found out after our visit, Pam is serving her fifth year as Chairman of the Launceston Greyhound Racing Club. Doug and Pam were made Life Members of the Launceston Greyhound Racing Club in 2005. Doug had been a former Committee Man back in the 80’s. Pam was Secretary and Chairman of the Launceston Greyhound Owners, Trainers and Breeders Association for many years and a member of the Ladies Committee of the Launceston Greyhound Racing Club for sixteen years. John Cassidy, son of Doug and Pam, is a Captain of the State Golf Team and still helps when he can with the dogs and is an avid supporter. I had to wonder if John might ever show up to an NGA meeting with his clubs. I have heard the obligatory NGA golf tournament gets kind of interesting from time to time. Continued Page 26 - 25-

of paper her way. She read it over, then asked, “What’s a Fightback?” “I think that is the equivalent of what we call official schooling,” I said. Maybe a dog was ruled off for interference, and he has to prove he has improved his personality before he can officially race again. Or something like that. Certainly, they aren’t looking for fighters, in that sense of the word, I wouldn’t think.” Little Elsie looked it over, then her eye caught the last sentence: Tote Tasmania has contributed $17,250 towards tonight's meeting. It appeared Little Elsie had a question. She asked, “Does this $17,250 stand for purses paid to the dogs for one evening’s racing?” “I believe so,” I said. “One evening?” “One evening.” “Is there a time limit on your prize-winning breeding to Jawa Leona’s Best?” “Not that I know of,” I said, grinning. Little Elsie said, “How much does it cost to rent an RV here?” “We’d have to learn how to drive on the other side of the road,” I said. “For pity’s sake,” she said.
Pam told us that anybody is allowed to train and own dogs, and if you hold a Trainer’s License you can train for other owners as well, which is what Doug and Pam were now doing, three dogs owned in Victoria. “Over the years,” Pam said, “we have had quite a few dogs, bred quite a few litters and had a few good ones. Riddler Jake (Puzzle Prize X :Lady Sparkles), in the last twelve months, had 34 starts for 20 wins and 6 placings. We have had a lot of fun with him. He belongs to a Mrs. Williams in Victoria. In those 20 wins he won the Devonport Show Cup and the Gold Cup in Hobart and is now racing as top grade at all tracks here.” For pity’s sake. Pam said, “Doug’s grandparents and father were involved for many years in Greyhound racing when it was straight track racing at the old White City Complex before it went to circle racing. Doug brought to the track his first dog when he was quite young, not old enough to register the dog in his name.” “Last year in Tasmania,” Pam said, “we had 154 race meetings, overall 1,007 individual starters, 1,545 races programmed, and 552 people registered as Trainers, Owners, Handlers and Syndicates.” Pam and Doug Cassidy gave us a welcomed ride to our Launceston Mecure Hotel, and tomorrow was another day and on to our third Tasmanian dog track, Devonport, where we would spend two days with Al and Di Clark, and then it was the Spirit of Tasmania and an overnight booking across Bass Straits to Melbourne and the Australian mainland, and among other things, the city track The Meadows, and a country straight grass track at Healesville, and finally a visit to an adoption gathering of some 500 Australian couch potatoes. Back in our hotel room, I was going through some papers I had collected at the track. “Now what are you looking at?” Little Elsie wanted to know. I pushed a sheet of paper her way, said, “A 2006-2007 Launceston Greyhound Racing Club membership application.” She gave it the once over. “Where’d you get this?” she asked. One of the highlights of Little Elsie’s trip to Peter Wesley gave it to me. Tasmania. “You’re thinking about your Hall of Fame breeding?” “Would that be fun, or what?” I asked. Next Week: A second Tasmanian Farm Visit. “Maybe we could rent an RV and train the pup on some isolated Tasmanian beach.” “Where it says marital status, write in divorced,” Little Elsie said, thumping the application blank. For pity’s sake. It was just a thought. “What’s that other piece of paper you‘re worrying?” Little Elsie wanted to know. I pushed the second piece - 26 -
