DOUBLES FOR FOUR Another well supported meeting with lots of happy owners and greyhounds. Doubles were recorded by Wendy Sebastyan with Good Gone Bad and Sol Invictus, Ray Fewings with Vico Road and Ecclefechan, Rob Harnas with Topher Gee and Raloo Barbara and Michael Stewart with Curly Magic and Reventon. Things moved very quickly as Gawler had a 12 race program with early kennelling. Owners and trainers are again reminded that the track is NOT available to key members on Saturday 27 May as the Adelaide Lure Coursing and Racing Club is looking for South Australia’s fastest 100m dog from all breeds. This is an interesting day – to watch all breeds chase the lure with tenacity and dedication, but not quite as fast as our happy band of chasers. Our next meeting is Sunday 21 May and we trust that our timer is up and working again. Just remember that all times have been hand timed these past two meetings and reflect that they were hand timed from the point of slipping. I hope that you have all renewed your membership. Points are counted from when you renew. Our fields are displayed on the GRSA website and I would suggest that you take note of the location of the fields for future reference. Committee have discussed the 4-dog events and have resolved to continue with 4-dog fields. However, the Oaks, Derby and Waterloo Cup are 16 dog events – 8-dog preludes will be run the meeting prior to these time honoured prestigious events to provide dogs with an extra course in preparation for 4 runs in these events. Dates to remember : Sunday 21 May, Sunday 11 June and Sunday 25 June – balance of racing dates will be advised shortly.

BRED TO WIN Our weekly selection of greyhounds to follow, based on their breeding and recent performances. ARGUS FILCH (Black dog, September 2015 Barcia Bale x Bathilda Bagshot). Raced and trained at Buckley, by Ian Cockerell. Yet to place in three starts, Geelong 460 metres, Ballarat 450 metres and Sandown (SAP) 515 metres, 30 April, where he started from box seven and finished sixth, beaten 7.87 lengths in the Vic Bred heat won by Rated (29.91), who won by 4.39 lengths, so he wasn’t that far behind the placegetters. On the improve. DEAD EYE DICKSON (White & black dog, August 2015 Fernando Bale x Oh Cee Ya). Raced by James Pattinson and trained at Pearcedale by Darren Pattinson. Beautifully bred youngster who had no luck when finished last in the Vic Bred heat won by Shae’s Intention (30.04) at Sandown (SAP) last Sunday. Bred in the purple from the same dam line as Smart Missile, so forget he ever started and wait until next time he steps on to the track. ROCKOON (White & black dog, June 2015 Peter Rocket x Raya Riot). Raced and trained by Keith Hellmuth at Pearcedale. Impressive first up third over 425 metres at Bendigo on 7 April, when beaten a length in the race won by Krygios (24.01). Then stepped up in class and distance, from box eight, over 515 metres at Sandown (SAP) on 30 April, where he finished fifth, beaten 15 lengths in the race won by Feel Your Heart (29.95), who won by 4.2 lengths. after wine vineyard. I never saw so many grape plants. The next day we would be on Qantas for home. Pity. I could spend several months here, you know, take my time, forget the rush rush-rush, go vineyard hopping, no pun intended. And then the flora seemed suddenly to change. To not much. Now this was different. It was like we drove through a time window in a Star Trek episode. What we were looking at, could this possibly be what was referred to as … the outback? Or Bush, as the poets and novelists went on about. Hot and dry. Here and there a Eucalyptus tree. “They’re having a Greyhound adoption picnic out here in the middle of nowhere?” I asked, my nose pressed to the window. “Outdoors?” Roger said, “We’re here.” We turned off the paved road onto a dirt road We passed a sign: Seymour Boarding Kennels. Ahead, scattered around under a few Eucalyptus trees, as advertised, some 300 Greyhounds and 400 people gathered in something of a picnic area, cars parked helter-skelter, booths here and there, an area set Bob and Suzy McKinnon, aka Maddog and Little Elsie, at the Greyhound Adoption picnic at Seymour, aside with a stage for entertainment and announcements. Special Feature Maddog” down under”. Continued

We met Boomeron, the 2000th dog adopted by Seymour Greyhound adoptions and took a picture. Boomer, apparently, as a postscript, has settled in beautifully with his family which recently adopted another Greyhound, Elvis, as a friend for Boomer. Both dogs, I hear, live with a cat. A blanket was produced for Seymour’s 1,000th dog adopted. “Just to make it a bit more special,” Larissa Hubbard, head of Seymour adoption, said. Yes indeed. Later, back home, I was curious about “Boomer” and looked him up on Greyhound Data. Boomeron has 71 races listed at Shepparton, Wangaratta, Traralgon, Healesville, Bendigo, Ballarat, Geelong, Horsham, The Meadows, Sandown Park, and Warrmambool, with 11 wins, 13 places, 13 shows, and 10 fourths. We learned that this Seymour area, before European settlement, was occupied by the Natakboolok people (pronounce that one) who held corroborees on the town site and still do. Iregretted not being able to attend or take part in a corroboree, and I said so. Roger and Vickie looked Little Elsie and me over like we didn’t quite fit the definition of the Australian Aborigine, and so maybe not. We visited with Larissa Hubbard for a time and chatted about Australian and USA Greyhound adoptions, very similar I thought at least in concept. Victoria racing chipping in the adoption theme reminded me somewhat of Bluff Run’s adoption out at the Lovely farm in Pacific Junction. An added twist was all food and training equipment in a foster Greyhound program paid for by the racing industry. We have foster programs in the states I am aware of, but I know of none where tracks pick up the feed bills, I mean foster homes, not adoption kennels. Apparently, Greyhound foster folks can more or less own a racing Greyhound without the “forever” commitment. This proves to be particularly beneficial

around holiday periods, for people who travel frequently or those who would like to have the companionship of a dog but don’t constantly have the time. I hadn’t heard anybody in the states who looked at fostering like that, but what do I know, strictly rhetorically speaking I might add. I might consider if for a while, but before you know it I’d get attached, and I’d have ten adopted dogs at the foot of the bed. And then there’s the cat to think of. I’m not worried about the safety of the cat. Not this cat. I’m worried about the safety of the dogs. Jones has learned to stay clear, but I have to admit he learned the hard way. You do what this cat tells you to do or you pay the price. Here’s another one I never heard of in the states which does not mean, for those astute readers following along here, I know what I am talking about, but it is not unusual in Australia for the owner of a Greyhound to put that Greyhound on an adoption agency waiting list even before the dog goes to the track, like at six months. Ever heard of that one? Larissa has a list. Information is on the web. The picnic of some three or four hundred people and their Greyhounds had entertainment: a clown on a stage. Folks stood, sat, applauded, laughed. Continued Page 26 - 25-

sniffed it, and said it smelled like a septic tank. I thought the second batch was a lot better. I rather fancied we could stop at one of these vineyards we were passing as I had the desire to exchange professional fermentation techniques with which I had become familiar, but Roger drove on for Melbourne, we had a lovely going away dinner at Roger and Vicki’s home, and the next day a 747 Qantas had us seated like two sardines with our own television sets for Los Angeles. Something of a long flight, I thought.

Everything was over much too soon. Australia is a big country. I want to come back when we have more time. I want to take that train that goes clean across the country, The Indian Pacific, from Sydney to Perth, I want to skin dive with the Great White Sharks on the Gold Coast. Maybe not. I can watch from the beach. No problem.

Farewell to Australia and thanks for a great time.

I informed Roger and Vicki that Little Elsie and I grew the North Dakota Valiant grape and had something of a small vineyard ourselves, five plants actually, with a decent harvest if the robins didn’t beat us to it. RSN News PETER EUSTACE RETIRING http://www.grv.org.au/hall-of-fame/people/peter-eustace/

After a long and fruitful career, Peter Eustace will be calling his final race from Sale Greyhounds on RSN927 and Sky Channel on Sunday May 21st . Peter’s career as a talented race caller has spanned many decades and during this time he has been a tireless advocate and promoter of all codes of racing in the Gippsland region. I can speak from personal experience, having worked at 3TR Sale with Peter in the 1980’s, about his professionalism as a broadcaster and his unwavering passion for all codes of racing. Perhaps Peter’s most memorable moment as a race caller occurred in 1987 when he called the triple dead heat at Stony Creek. This is the only other triple dead heat to occur in Victorian gallops since the Hotham Handicap of 1956. I am sure you will join with me in wishing Peter all the best for his final few meetings, which will also include calling Warragul and Traralgon Greyhounds in May, followed by a long and happy retirement. John Thwaites, Program Director, RSN

was Ballarat’s original greyhound track, before moving to Gippsland where he called races for local radio station, 3TR in Sale. Eustace has called all three racing codes at every race track in Gippsland on countless occasions, however, greyhound racing is undoubtedly his code of choice. “I love calling greyhounds because it keeps you on your toes. With horse racing you can get into a pattern and call a good race, but with greyhounds – particularly short races – you have 18 seconds to call a race and it is really challenging.” “I still call three or four greyhound meetings a week and I find it really motivating. I hope to be doing it for another 10 years,” he said. Eustace’s passion for greyhound racing extends to the greyhound breed. He has trained over 100 greyhounds – never more than four at a time – and has experienced “reasonable” success including calling his own greyhounds such as Valpierre to victory. He has also kept many of his greyhounds as pets once they retired from the track. His greatest thrill, however, was calling some of the all-time great greyhounds of yesteryear. “I was lucky enough to call Temlee and Half Your Luck winning juvenile races at Traralgon and they both went on to be champions,” he said. Peter has also served as a committeeman at the Sale Greyhound Racing Club. Close compatriot Des Dooley, Manager of the Sale GRC has many fond memories of Eustace, and none more so than the 2012 Sale Cup. “My favourite memory of Peter was the 2012 Sale Cup. Peter missed calling the 2011 Sale Cup – which would have been his 40th one – due to illness, and there was a question mark over his ability to call up to his usual high standard when he returned. However, he had a great call as Destini Fireball won the race in front of a big crowd, and that was something that will live with us forever,” Dooley said. “Peter’s passion for racing is obvious when he’s calling, especially in tight finishes. Another of his strengths is that he’s always unbiased. With some callers you can sometimes tell who they’ve backed by the way they call, but you would never know with Peter – even though he is only a modest punter – and that takes a lot of professionalism.” “He also avoids controversy by not saying if a greyhound has fought. That takes discipline, and the last thing you’d want to do is get a call like that wrong or put pressure on the stewards to act. Mistakes can easily be made on first look.”

There is no one more synonymous with racing in Gippsland than Peter Eustace, a man who has called more than 50,000 greyhound, thoroughbred and harness races since the mid 1960s. His passion for calling started long before that, however, as Peter practised his craft in the rough streets of West Heidelberg in Melbourne’s north while in his teens. “I used to call matchstick races down the gutters in the lane ways when I was a kid.” “West Heidelberg was a rough area back in those days, but calling matchstick races would keep me entertained,” Eustace recalled. Eustace grew up idolising legendary race callers Bert Bryant and Bill Collins, both of whom he would Contribution from John Thwaites, eventually deal with throughout his working life. RSN, and details from GRV Hall Of He first started calling at Broadway Park, which Fame website.

Letters to the Editor 3 May 2017, Editor, I am both amazed and puzzled when I see one of the two or three greatest stayers of the past decade – Space Star (Bekim Bale x Tonto Tears) - out of favour at stud despite its modest $1,550 service fee. It seems that the penchant for fast money – meaning quick beginning sprinters – has turned around the industry in recent times. It is no comfort that the thoroughbreds face the same issues as NZ and other overseas stayers cut a swathe through major Australian distance races. More worrying is that racing authorities seem oblivious to the impact of this change. On that score I discount the country-wide efforts to offer bonus money for provincial distance races. We have had those for some years now and they have made not the slightest difference. Short fields are common and competitors are often no more than dogs which are not much good over shorter trips. Additionally, most such races – in the 600m/650m category – start near a bend with all the bias and disruption that goes with that. Any concept of winners moving on to tougher 700s in town is equally fanciful. Few if any of those dogs can run out the longer trip. Just check out the bunch going up and down in the one spot on the home turn. Check out how many city winners can repeat the effort a week later – and in what sort of time? In short, the breed is getting weaker. That cannot be good. So, how to combat the trend? You can’t really blame trainers as they have to play the cards they are dealt. And breeders – see above – can’t sell sires with staying qualities anyway (few as they are). Economics are a powerful influence. That being the case, why not use money to turn the battleship around – not by feeding moderates in the bush but by more direct influence? First, consider what has been happening over the past decade. While staying quality has declined, at the other end of the scale clubs and authorities have increased opportunities for short course racers. Sub350m trips have been added at Albion Park, Lismore, Traralgon, Mandurah and Cannington, while similar events are increasing or holding their own at Cranbourne (often half the program), Dapto, Goulbourn, Northam, Potts Park, Richmond, Healesville, Strathalbyn and even on occasions at Wentworth Park. These are not fair dinkum races but simply jumping contests which do little or nothing to advance the breed. Add to that the rising popularity of 400m events which now dominate many provincial meetings. All the above, according to some advice from clubs, are there

to satisfy requests from trainers – obviously trainers with weaker dogs in their kennels. We also need to better define our objectives. Arguably, the biggest factor is the clear drop in the breed’s stamina and the doubt about whether that trend will continue or be reversed. Surely, even to a breeding ignoramus like me, that must be a big worry. Maybe others will comment. The second point to consider is that the greyhound racing product is also deteriorating from both ends. Long races are suffering a fall in quality because so few dogs can genuinely run 700m-plus. Yet fans generally prefer longer races (a better run for your money), hopefully where they can watch their selections get a chance of winning or placing. Conversely, many fans hate the quickie races where it is all over in a flash – sometimes a blinding flash as interference is usually much higher in the early few metres. None of that promotes a continuing appreciation of the greyhound athlete. For both these reasons, the industry is bound to take remedial action in order to ensure long term progress and a finer appreciation of the breed. So, how should it be done? My own thoughts are to attack the financial aspect in a few different ways. First, I would eliminate entirely all racing over less than 400m. It is too chaotic for good punting and it is risky to the dogs’ health. Leave that lot to straight tracks, gymkhanas or non-TAB country meetings. Second, I would sharply reduce prize money for races in the 400m category and increase them for 450m to 550m events, thereby providing a clear incentive for breeding stronger dogs. Third, 600m/650m races need either lengthening or the starts re-positioned to avoid the early smash and grab outcomes we see every day. The most urgent problems are at Albion Park, Sandown and The Meadows, but there are plenty of others. Fourth, since direct bonuses for longer races cannot achieve the desired or any result, I would take away that cash and invest it in breeding incentives for selected sires or dams – ie those which can offer real hope of producing future long distance racers while simultaneously strengthening the breed overall. Exactly how this might be done is beyond my ability but no doubt a small panel of experts could come up with practical solutions. Do it nationally, ignore the likely stream of complaints and then stand back and see how it works over a five year period. Bruce N. Teague, Gosford NSW.
