Set To Storm Surprise Packet in Mosman Semi’s By Jeff Collerson GRNSW Website for AGRA Set To Storm, who had not won a race at Wentworth Park before last Saturday night, goes into this Saturday's final of the Group 1 Ladbrokes Peter Mosman Classic as the fastest qualifier and arguably the most suitably drawn. The Jodie Van Enkhuyzen-trained Set To Storm, who led throughout to win the fourth semi-final in 29.63, has drawn superbly in box eight in the final. Set To Storm, who was having only her ninth race when she won her semi-final, looks the greyhound to beat in the final as she not only recorded the quickest semi-final time but also posted the fastest first split of 5.41. In last Saturday's first semi-final Lucky Chap, who clocked the second fastest Wentworth Park time of the year when he led throughout in 29.56 in his heat, trailed Central Bark to the home bend and got up in the last hop to win in 29.95. Mister Twister showed his penchant for box one with a dazzling all-the-way 29.66 performance to easily defeat

Yankee's Ethics in the second semi-final. Then the marvellous Victorian Up Hill Jill cruised into her fourth Group 1 final by leading throughout to trounce the improving fellow Victorian Chasin' Crackers in 29.89. Set To Storm was chased all the way by Corrupt Millions to set the time standard in the next Classic run-off. Trainers who have greyhounds in the final, were on the whole disappointed with where their greyhound drew in the Group 1 feature Continued Page 22

Greyhound racing identity Doris Marjorie Holmes passed away recently following a short illness at age 94. Doris was involved in greyhound racing for 40 years as a participant and was a member at both the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club and the Melbourne Greyhound Racing Association. “Mum shared in the ownership of many greyhounds with family as part of the Shiraz Racing Syndicate, which raced numerous group dogs including Delbairn Babe, Innocent Man, Lead Role, Black Shiraz, Big Ginger Boy, Coriole, Petite Verdot and Brokenwood,” son Daryl Holmes said. “Her favourites were Delbairn Babe, who was a top stayer, group winner, Olympic Park track record holder, winner of 20 city races also the dam of Tangairn. She also had a particular soft spot for Coriole, who won the Maturity, Lizrene and Henry Harrison races, and also Brokenwood, who broke the track record at Cranbourne when becoming the first greyhound to break 30 seconds over the 520 metres.” “For many years Mum was the real worker behind the scenes with whelping and rearing our pups to six months of age and assisting with trialling, handling and making hundreds of trips to vets Jim Gannon, Des Fegan and Barry Haywood. Mum continually backed myself and later my son Scotty in our involvement in the sport and she regularly accompanied Scotty when he did the country trips when she was in her eighties. She did all this at the same time as being a fantastic grandmother of five and great grandmother of 10.”

Honcho x Sobbing Sal and Irish bred, Pacific Mile, is by Head Honcho x Wise Beauty*. Paradise Madison is from his dam’s second Head Bound litter, of seven named, all winners, who won more than 50 races between them. Her first Head Bound litter had six named, who all won and won more than 40 races between them. Paradise Madison has four other litters on the ground here, with the oldest being six dogs and four bitches, whelped in December 2015, from Blinder. His other litters have been from Black Traminer, Noela’s Dream amd Bedazzled Bead. Toby’s litter of five dogs and four bitches are from the well bred, lightly raced bitch, Thinkalot (October 2011 Premier Fantasy* x Mrs Trickett), whose dam is by Brett Lee x Thai Again (Token Prince x Thai Magic) and worth recalling, Thai Magic, is by Grove Whisper* x Lauren’s Desire.

Grove Whisper*

Thinkalot is from a handy litter of nine named, which included Tyrion, Whittaker, Botany Downs, Botany Junction, Freestyle Lass, Load Up, Mr. Fordham and Mr. Vision. She was lightly raced with just five starts from which she recorded one win and one placing, winning over 515 metres at Gosford (29.92), where she was also placed. She has one previous litter on file, with five dogs and two bitches, whelped in April 2016 by international stud success Kinloch Brae*. INVITATION Invitation to all Owners, Trainers, Studmasters and Breeders. If you have a story to tell about the part you play in greyhound racing, let us know, bred a litter, have a special greyhound, whatever, we’d love to hear from you. editor@victoriangreyhoundweekly.com.au

Coursing Results Longwood - Sunday 11 June

South Australia - Sunday 11 June

Last Sunday was a cracker of a day and surprisingly enough well support with many new faces. Of interest to all Greyhound buffs I think is the three litter mates to contest the Sylvester Doyle finals, and I may be incorrect but this may be a first to have three litter mates contesting such a prestigious event Coursing. Checking the siblings on the GRV website they are all very handy greyhounds. Great litter I would think. The 3 pups are: – Whelped Mar 15 (S: Barcia Bale D: Evie’s Identity). Two Fawn Dogs, Erupt Eve Lad and Lieu Knee Annie, Bred and Owned by James Vandemaat, trained by Robert Glass of Kyabram in their first season both have won events entered leading up to the Sylvester Doyle. One black bitch, Gotham Queen Bred by James Vandermaat, owned by SMKN Syn. and trained by Sean Lithgow of Devon Meadows equally as successful as her siblings wining her first event in April at Lang Lang. The other finalists come equally credentialed in their first coursing season, Last Outlaw trained by Malcolm Davies of Altona Green, Heat Up trained by Michael Chilcott of Heathcote who came into the heats with no coursing record to then course through to the finals, Mutant Trained by Daniel Pell of Toolleen to has a good first coursing season record and Hungry Heart trained by Yvonne Carter of Mudgegonga won his first ever event at Benalla. Andrew Copley

With the numbers down somewhat on previous meetings, the quality of racing remained top class. Kath Johnstone obviously has a liking for the relaxed atmosphere at Virginia and was rewarded with 3 winners on the day. Letters Editor. HAS THE HORSE BOLTED?

The penny has dropped. Greyhound Racing Victoria has finally accepted that it is running out of dogs. Grading and race programming are being re-cast as a result. By extension, this decision (correctly) rubbishes the meagre analysis and illogical conclusions reached by live baiting inquiry chiefs - all lawyers or bureaucrats - in Victoria (two), NSW and Queensland. All wanted to reduce breeding. It further highlights the inane nature of political decisions to resolve so-called euthanasia problems by cutting back breeding (tacitly supported by a tame Alliance industry group in NSW). In reality, breeding has been in decline for a decade now, possibly influenced by a combination of a poor public image, perceived low returns and making it all “too hard” to take part. More recently, rule changes which limit the quantity and frequency of breeding from aging dams will have made an additional impact. Victoria (and others) has also reduced or eliminated incentives for breeding although, illogically, it has retained a significant number of races limited to “Vicbred” dogs. Curiously, neither of these efforts, including cash incentives provided by the previous Premier, had any noticeable effect on the dog population anyway. Part of the reason for that is that breeding is by nature not a state-based administrative function but a national and commercial one. That same decline, and a rush to fill slots in the TAB calendar, also caused a fall in average field quality as more low quality dogs entered the racing group, thereby discouraging customers (ie punters) from getting involved. Turnover has broadly held up by replacing punters with mug-operated betting devices, by increasing the number of races and (in some cases) by doing better commission deals with state governments and TABs. Are there any more rabbits to pull out of the hat? Well, maybe the proposed merger of Tabcorp and Tatts would help by offering bigger pools but the likelihood of that happening is fragile – unfortunately. In other words, there has been a massive concentration on processes with little assessment of outcomes or unintended consequences. Decisions revolved around newspaper headlines rather than informed analysis. The industry has always been reactive rather than proactive. Faulty inquiry findings were seldom challenged by racing authorities. Importantly, reasons for the long term fall in breeding were never addressed. So, while the overdue move of GRV to re-organise race fields and grading priorities is fair enough, it is really shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted. Serious questions remain unanswered. 

price structures will alienate serious investors. The largest greyhound state, NSW, is looking at an impossible financial outcome as huge costs are about to be dumped on it following government intervention based on perceived welfare considerations and inadequate business analyses. That almost certain decline in NSW activity follows a long term decline in the third largest state, Queensland, where both government and industry policies and practices have amounted to no more than waffle and inaction. An uncompetitive Tatts service adds to the problem. Maidens and bottom grade races have invaded the big capital city meetings in an effort to maintain turnover and public interest. A decade ago these would never have been seen there. Track standards are poor and may well remain so if serious investigations and significant funds are not made available. Falls and interference are turn-offs for trainers, punters and the public alike. Attention to the poor public image of the greyhound and the racing industry has varied from slim to non-existent. Ditto for innovative marketing campaigns to seek out new customers. Although far from achieving a majority, the growth of so -called NT corporate bookmakers is influencing industry efficiency (for the worse) and government policies while making a mockery of once valid betting patterns. Price rip-offs and punitive betting rules are now the norm. These people are not bookmakers but price manipulators (paradoxically, they all started life as genuine bookies but were alienated by racing authorities at home). Management of the industry is fragmented and in the hands of bureaucrats rather than lively business managers, thereby ensuring there will be no real progress. Generally, change is regarded as a dirty word. The absence of sensible and authoritative national leadership virtually guarantees that inefficiencies will persist and progress will be blocked. At the core, the greyhound racing industry is dependent on two things: maintenance and improvement of the breed and strong community/customer support. Both are failing.

Finally, an explanatory note: I am critical of the contribution of “bureaucrats” although I have struck many very fine examples of the breed over several decades. However, the problem is that running a commercial industry is not what they are built for. Square pegs and round holes!

Bruce N. Teague Gosford NSW Major changes have taken place in the nature and quality of the greyhound population – strength and stamina, for example – but no studies are in train to identify how or why this has happened and what to do about it. The customer profile has been downgraded to mug level, meaning that future changes to the industry’s income will be unpredictable and unreliable, and that volatile

AGRA News Mosman Classic Preview continued

Honour Roll

Up Hill has drawn box six for Saturday’s Group 1 final, a draw that has disappointed her trainer David Geall, although Mister Twister, a keen railer in box five, could give Geall’s greyhound a cart across in the run to the first turn. Mister Twister's trainer Jason Mackay said his greyhound needed to be drawn as close to the rails as possible, while Lucky Chap's trainer Anthony Azzopardi predicted that his greyhound will want to run to the right so believed box four was not ideal for him. Central Bark's trainer Mark Bell, however, was happy with box three. “Although he had box six in his semi-final I wanted him drawn closer to the rails in the final. If Central Bark begins like he did tonight he has a great chance,” Bell said.

The Classic was first run at Harold Park in 1952 when won by Robin Buchanan. In those days, the race was called the Bi-Annual Classic and remained the same until 1988 when the GBOTA renamed the Classic honouring legendary administrator the late Peter Mosman. Like all other GBOTA features it moved with the club to Wentworth Park in 1987. Some outstanding sprinters have won the race over its journey going back to Miss Oakey (53), Tell You Why (59), Classy Jane (the dam of Black Top 60), Rokoko (68), The Smoother (70), Satan’s Legend (78), Tegimi (79), Promises Free (82), Brother Fox (85), Farmer Wilson (91), How’s The Fort (92), Worthy Reward (93), Tap Dance (94), Solve The Puzzle (98), Great Wish (99), Winsome Dollars (2001), Elite State (2003), Surf Lorian (2004), Tuiaki (2010) and four Wheeler owned winners split by Bessy Boo Allen Harper, Garrick Bale, the mighty Xylia Allen and superstar Fernando Bale in 2015. BRED TO WIN Our weekly selection of greyhounds to follow, based on their breeding and recent performances. SUBLIME NEWS White & black bitch, July 2015 Kiowa Mon Manny* x Flying Mozoltov. Trained at Parwan by Paul Abela, for Joseph Cremona. Fourth from box eight over 515 metres at Sandown (SAP) on 11 June at first race start, in the race won by Annie Lava (29.81). Big ask to get across from the outside in a 515 metres maiden at Sandown first up, and is certain to have benefitted from that run. ISHMY BROTHER Black dog, June 2015 Crump x Sooty Lee. Trained at Devon Meadows by Chris Johannsen for Kenneth Doidge. Raced 15 times now for one win and nine placings and looks to be maturing nicely. Won over 460 metres at Warragul (26.34) back on 30 March, and placed three of four starts, Sale and Cranbourne 520 metres, and Sale 650 metres before last start third over 595 metres at Sandown (SAP) on 11 June. Came from box one on that occasion and finished just 1.83 lengths behind the winner, Magenta Gold (35.05). All the better for that run and on the improve. IT’S A PLAN White & black Dog, July 2015, Jagger Swagger x It’s A Blur. Trained by Wayne Vassallo at Devon Meadows for the Whittington Sprod Syndicate. Beautifully bred youngster who shows plenty of promise. Raced three times for two wins, over 460 metres at Warragul (26.43, 26.40), before stepping up class and distance to 515 metres at Sandown (SAP) on June 11. He came from box six on that occasion, and had no luck when finishing third, beaten 6.50 lengths in the race won by Pink Floyd (30.05). Likely to need it further as well, but is very promising and improving with each run. Sell your pups here
