Go Fernando Fernando Bale March 2013 Kelsos Fusileer* x Chloe Allen 44 starts 35-3-2 $1,299,370 Former champion sprinter Fernando Bale has made an impressive entry onto the Victorian Metropolitan Sires list. On the list for the first time at the end of June, he jumped in at number 15, with 23 wins from 12 individual winners in the first six months of the year. Even more impressive when you consider he didn’t get his first Melbourne Metropolitan winner until 26 April. He had 14 June winners, and at the end of June he has had eight winners at full stake metro meetings and 15 at provincial stake, midweek and Sunday meetings, which is not too bad when you consider most of his first crop have only been racing for a couple of months. Fernando Bale is from an outstanding litter, which included Elfen Bale, Gazer Bale, Hakata Bale, Ikaku Bale, Josie Bale, Kenju Bale and Linco Bale who won more than 100 races collectively. According to GRV’s Fasttrack whelping statistics he has had 127 litters whelped up to the end of June, so he has every chance of working his way to the top of the Metropolitan sires list over the next couple of years. Read more about his June winners and their dams in the Victorian Metropolitan Sires first half year wrap up on Page 14 this week.
PHILLIP SCHULTZ has a nice litter of eight pups on the list this week by another under-rated sire, Nolen (November 2009 Collision x Brooklyn Belle). She has one previous litter on file with two dogs and six bitches, whelped in July 2016 by Shifty Sticka. Dubbo breeder, Robert Hatton also has a litter on this week’s list by Nitro Burst. Unfortunately the litter only produced one dog pup, from the very well bred bitch, Mann She’s Fast (July 2012 Messi x My My Machine), whose dam is by Ahane Lad* x La Royale (Brett Lee x Sporty’s Babe). Mann She’s Fast raced 50 times for eleven wins and 14 placings, winning from 307 metres at Bathurst (17.91) to 520 metres at Wentworth Park (30.24). History Special EARLY GREYHOUND COURSING
The earliest written report describing coursing in Victoria was in the Geelong Advertiser. The Advertiser reported in June 1843 that a party of gentlemen who lived to the westward of Lake Colac killed 64 kangaroos over three days. One of the courses went for over a mile, in a circle. The dogs were slipped when a flying or maiden Doe was found. It was reported that at the end of the day the men adjourned to the house of one of the neighbours, where good humour and merriment closed the day. No mention was made of the breed of dogs used but the owners and dogs were recorded as Mr Lloyd’s Minna, Mr Bromfield’s Betsy and Mr Manifold’s Austin. In July 1860 rabbit coursing was held at Flemington Racecourse. The rabbits used came from Rabbit Island in Westernport Bay. A Herald Sun newspaper reporter wrote that as they were domestic types (coloured), they refused to run. They just squatted and allowed the greyhounds to kill them. A wallaby was then tried but after hopping a few hundred yards it jumped into the Saltwater River, swam across and sought refuge in the yard of an Inn. The wallaby was brought back but refused to run so its life was spared. The Herald reporter noted that it was a wretched affair and the only persons who profited by the first Coursing meeting ever held in Victoria were the cabmen, and they reaped an abundant harvest, as there were 400 or 500 persons at the ground. PUBLICANS Just as they did with horse racing, publicans could see a financial advantage for promoting and running sporting events next to their hotels. Harry Howells of the Plough Inn, Geelong was one such publican. On the 22nd May 1863 a rabbit coursing event was held at the Inn. The Herald reporter noted that as most of the dogs were not used to the sport some long runs were made, however all the rabbits were killed. Howell supplied some 40
rabbits. It was not reported if the rabbits were domestic or wild types. The dogs consisted of mainly pure and crossbred greyhounds plus terriers. The next month coursing returned to Melbourne on Emerald Hill. Mr Trotter, from the Napoleon the Third Inn, instituted rabbit coursing in the same style as was popular in the old country. The rabbits were procured from the extensive warren of Thomas Austin Esq’s Barwon Park property, near Geelong. The Herald scribe wrote the rabbits were allowed to have a better run than at home (England). Dogs of all sorts were allowed to run in the event. Dogs of similar ability were slipped together including Spaniel and Bulldog, Terrier and Greyhound, Lurcher and Cocker. The rabbits were allowed 150 yards start in matches where kangeroo dogs and greyhounds were entered, and 60 yards for terriers. The reporter submitted thatthe coursing ( rabbits ) should be confined to small dogs, for the sport is little to watch the ground devouring leaps of the kangeroo dog or greyhound and the deadly pounce on the affrighted and doomed rabbit. In May and June of 1863 greyhound coursing matches were held in Hepburn’s paddock fronting the Turf Hotel, Ballarat. The rabbits were procured by Mr J Smith from a rabbit warren at Guildford. It was reported that the rabbits ran well but were mown down by their pursuers. By 1865 the Ballarat Star newspaper reported that rabbit coursing at the Turf Hotel had become quite fashionable. The meetings held on Friday afternoons attracted 300 to 400 people. The sport was good and between 50 to 60 rabbits were killed. The dogs were mainly greyhounds and terriers. A combined pigeon and rabbit shooting match, plus rabbit coursing was held at Jeffreys Hotel Newtown, Geelong in July 1867. HARES While rabbit coursing was popular, the inevitable result in favour of the greyhound left a lot to be desired. People then began importing hares and attempting to breed them with a view to future coursing. William Lyall who owned “Yallock” on the shores of Westernport Bay seems to be the first to successfully breed hares. He reported in March 1862 that his hares were thriving. Lyall later built a homestead and proudly named it “Harewood”. From 1863 the Acclimatization Society were also breeding hares on Phillip Island and at Royal Park. The six hares on Phillip Island had increased to over 200 by 1865nd the Society began distributing them around the state. Everywhere hares were released they prospered. The Society kept releasing until 1873 when hares were no longer protected by the Game Act which was in force from Sept 1867 until Dec 1873. Continued Page 28

History Special carried on during the greater portion of the day. Large numbers of rabbits succumbed to the NARACOORTE voraciousness of the dogs. Then by way of Mr M L Connor a keen coursing man from the old diversifying the sport of rabbit coursing a large cat country, was instrumental in getting coursing off the was let loose in the middle of the field. Two large ground in South Australia. The game coursed in S.A greyhounds being engaged to course it. The cat was wallaby, an animal about the size of a Irish refused to run and stood to fight. The cat belted one Hare, as reported in the Australasian newspaper, dog so much its owner had to intervene. No word with fair average speed, not quite as fast as the on the cats fate but we can guess. Ashdown or Wiltshire Hare, but processing the most wonderful power of turning. The lengths of the GREYHOUND VS HARE courses, often a mile or more show that the wallaby In March 1872 the Victorian Coursing Club was is a good substitute for the hare. The first wallaby formed with an annual subscription of ÂŁ3. The aim coursing event took place in June 1867 at of the club was to protect the hares, then breeding up Narracoorte. around the state, with a view to the future sport of The Narracoorte coursing club was formally hare coursing with Greyhounds. Then on the established the following year and held the first 26th July 1872 a group of sportsmen travelled to Australian Waterloo Cup soon after. Pademelons Geelong to take part in a coursing match. The report (small scrub wallabies) were the quarry, or if in short noted that 21 hares were coursed with only 3 killed. supply Rat Kangaroos were coursed. Both Finally, a fairer contest. This was what the marsupials are now extinct on the mainland. greyhound men waited a long time for. The EARLY GREYHOUND COURSING
MELBOURNE COURSING CLUB Back in Melbourne the inaugural meeting of the Melbourne Coursing Club took place on the 20th May 1868 at the Press cricket ground. Mr Butt of the Sir Henry Barkly Hotel provided wallaby however it was reported that this was poor sport as the greyhounds ran them down before they got halfway across the paddock. Thereafter a lot of rabbits were coursed but the sport was upset by stray dogs joining in the chase. The Australasian newspaper received a letter on 22nd May 1869 from the President of the Acclimatization Society complaining of the destruction of hares upon the Melbourne racecourse. One was killed last Sunday and three others on the following day. He said the Society had introduced these valuable animals into the Colony and asks true sportsmen to aid and assist the society in the protection of poor Puss (hares) for two years. After which hunting with harriers or greyhounds can commence. Meanwhile at Geelong, Mr Lambell was holding rabbit coursing matches on the Belmont Common. The meetings were well attended. Mr Gosling supplied the rabbits. Mr Gosling and others around the state were breeding wild grey rabbits for coursing and hunting. This must have contributed to the rapid spread, and later plague, of rabbits. BENDIGO The Bendigo Advertiser reported on a sports meeting held at Back Creek, December 1869 and organised by Mr J C Hadley. Rabbit coursing was
sportsmen then held a meeting at Macks Hotel debating the new game laws. They said the old laws protecting hares were unenforced and ignored. Hares had breed up and could look after themselves. (Authors note: hares were protected from 6th Sept 1867 until Dec 1872, so this match may have been illegal). Less than a year later on the 26th of May 1873 the first public coursing meeting using hares was held at Sunbury. A special train from Melbourne took the greyhounds, owners and supporters to Sunbury. PLUMPTON Victoria had at last caught up with the Old Country’s tradition of coursing wild hares with greyhounds. As it transpired within a few years England started to move to enclosed hare coursing, with the first venue was founded by Thomas Henry Case on the 28th Dec 1876, at Plumpton East Sussex. The first greyhound coursing plumpton in Australia was at Diggers Rest, Victoria in 1881. Known as the Oval, the enclosed course consisted of 200 acres with an inner 100 acres enclosed for the sport. Most clubs continued to course hares in the open. Large clear paddocks were needed to not only breed the hares but course them. The Ritchie family property Blackwood in Western Victoria proved ideal. The Australasian reported that the Mount Rouse District Coursing Club held a meeting on the 10th March 1888, on the Blackwood Estate near Penshurst.
