She is from a litter of six named, which included Winsome Bluey, Winsome Dan, Winsome Jacko, Winsome Jenny, Winsome Mission and Winsome Warrior, with their dam also producing winners from both of her other litters, by Bit Chili and Where’s Pedro. On the track, Winsome Amanda raced 44 times for nine wins and 15 placings, winning five times over 520 metres at Wentworth Park (29.78), with single wins over 400 metres (22.77) and 535 metres (30.67) at Richmond, 516 metres at Dubbo (30.08) and 405 metres at Mandurah in WA (22.71).
TWO litters on the list this week by the well bred, underrated sire Spring Gun (June 2009 Bombastic Shiraz x Ready For Rain). Three dogs and six in the first litter, registered by Swan Bay breeder, Alan Ivers, from the well bred bitch, Five Cinns (December 2011 Give Me Five x Cinnabar), whose dam is by Collision x Sutro Star (Token Prince x Ready To Rain). She is from a litter of ten named, which included Big Tee Sal, Community Fund, Cynthia’s Star, Flying Fabulous, Larnee Lace, Mike Lowrie, Topper Harley, Topper Kahlu and Tugg Speedman, with their dam also producing a very good litter by Where’s Pedro in January 2011. Five Cinns was lightly raced with just five starts, for one placing, over 400 metres at Bulli, beaten 1.75 lengths. She has four named offspring, all good winners, from her first litter, whelped in June 2014 by Jarvis Bale. Nowra Hill breeder, Stephen Milligan has the other Spring Gun litter, which has five dogs and seven bitches, from another lightly raced bitch, Lovely Tilly (January 2011 Magnificent Love x Kazmic’s Charm), whose dam is by History Lesson x Berridale Girl (Big Sam Banner x Fancy Colleen). She is from a litter of four named, which included Annie’s Charm, Charming Tilly and Drill Sargent, with their dam only having one other named offspring on file, Emobe, who was whelped in July 2012 by Hurricane Luke. On the track she only raced twice, for a win over 274 metres at Appin (16.14) in June 2013 where she was also placed.

Coursing History Remember J.H (Jack) Baines Roger Clark MY uncle Jack Baines, was one of the most successful Coursing trainers and breeders of the 1930’s, 40’s and 50’s. Whilst he never trained a Waterloo Cup winner, he was runner up twice, in 1938 with Dramaris and 1960 with Charta. His greatest Classic wins came in the Victorian Derby, where he had four winners, 1941 Dhubri, 1952 Banos, 1954 Elixum and 1957 Ganista (Son of Banos), as well as being runner up in 1959 with Rakura and 1950 with Villego. He also had considerable success in the Victorian Oaks, where he won in 1949 with Illoura, divided in 1953 with Wilma and Quilda, winning again in 1954 with Kapeen and he was also runner up in 1937 with Dramaris, who was also runner up in the Waterloo Cup in 1938. He was instrumental in the establishment of the track at Lang Lang, which is named ‘Baines Park’ in his honour.
My wife Vicki Clark raced the greyhound BAINES PARK (February 2012 Never Give Up* x Dedes Dilema) a few years ago, also named after Uncle Jack. She was beaten by a length or so by the eventual winner, Full Of Grace in the 2014 Waterloo Cup, then won the Silver Eagle. She was defeated in the second round in 2015. Uncle Jack would have loved her, a big strong 30kg bitch, who won two of her five coursing finals and looked a lot like his 1953 Oaks divider, Quilda. The ANZGA paid tribute to J.H (Jack) Baines after his passing in 1965, highlighting his successes and also his contribution to greyhound racing over 30 years. - 17 -

Lightly raced with just 12 starts for two wins and three placings. Following consecutive fourth placings over 350 metres at Healesville, with fourth then a handy win over 460 metres at Warragul (26.33) on 29 June. Big step up in class and distance when fifth from box five over 515 metres at Sandown (SAP) on 9 July, beaten 13 lengths in the race won by Diamond Rocks (29.99). Letters Rasmussen Factor (RF) Inbreeding: IN September 2008 in another forum I answered a letter from Gerard from Seven Hills in NSW about the Rasmussen Factor. Over the last couple of weeks I have received two emails on the same subject, so went searching through my old files, and came up with the original summary. Rasmussen Factor (RF) Inbreeding: The Effect on Their Racing and Breeding Career The “Rasmussen Factor” (or RF) is a term used to describe interbreeding to superior female families through different individuals. As defined by the originators and developers of the idea, the late Daily Racing Form “Bloodlines” columnist Leon Rasmussen and his colleague, Rommy Faversham, the interbreeding must occur through the sire and the dam (ie. Be on both sides of the pedigree) and the duplication of the inbred female must be within five generations. Thus, inbreeding to full or half siblings within four generations would qualify, while inbreeding to the same son would not. Rasmussen and Faversham claim an advantage for RF interbreeding based on a study of starters at the 1996 English Derby and Irish Derby. They found 4.0% of the starters exhibited the RF in their pedigree while 6.0% of graded stakes winners in the 1990s did the same. Their conclusion was that RF inbreeding occurred 50% more often among the top class runners than it did in the general population. This would be equivalent to an Impact Value (IV) of 1.50. In 2001, pedigree expert Roger Lyons questioned the significance of the Rasmussen/Faversham study by noting that inbreeding is not distributed evenly across the greyhound population, with graded stakes winners having more fifth generation and beyond inbreeding of all types than less talented runners. According to Lyons, this results from the fact that “ancestries that are swirled into the shallows of the breed have less in common with one another than ancestries that are swept along in the mainstream”. In other words, higher-class runners descend from a narrower range of breeding stock than the population at large. His evidence comes from data on RF frequencies in yearling sales in 1998 and 1999. Lyons found that the percentage of RF whelpings at the July, August and September sales exceeded the percentage of RF whelpings at the July and August sales. He noted that the breeding of whelpings at the first three higher quality sales was more typical of graded
stakes winners than the breeding of those at the other sales. It should not have been surprising then that Rasmussen and Faversham found the result they did. Unfortunately, they were comparing dissimilar populations that make their observed IV unreliable. At the same time, Lyons was also quick to point out that the superior performance of graded stakes winners is not necessarily related to their enhanced inbreeding. Since the RF seems to be of general interest to the greyhound community at large, and breeders in particular, and because meaningful research on the RF is relatively limited, we have undertaken a study of our own that examines the importance of the RF in the pedigree of dogs, both on their racing career and, to a lesser extent, their breeding career. Although not a truly random population, it is certain that their inclusion is independent of any association with the RF. In all, there are 817 dogs included in the analysis. Of these, 49 display the RF pattern while 768 do not. Furthermore, we will not compare separate and distinct populations as did Rasmussen and Faversham. Rather we will measure the distribution of effects within the single population of advertised dogs. In this manner, we hope to avoid any potential issues arising from the improper use of control groups. Author unknown
