Talking Breeding NSW NSW STUD SERVICES APRIL 2017
STUD services registered in NSW for the month of April fell to a near record low, with on 27 services registered for 15 different sires for the month. Only twice in my almost 30 year history of recording stud services has the number fallen anywhere this level, and that was last year, at the height of the Ban fiasco. Only six sires registered multiple services for the month and they were: 4 3 2
Barcia Bale and My Bro Fabio Dyna Double One and Magic Sprite Fabregas and Fernando Bale.
Looking at the combined service figures for the first four months of this year, sires with multiple services are: 20 16 14 13 11 8 5 4 3
Barcia Bale. Dyna Double One. My Bro Fabio. Kinloch Brae*. El Grand Senor and Magic Sprite Banjo Boy. Collision, Fernando Bale and Spring Gun. Elite State, Cosmic Rumble and Hay Fergus. Black Magic Opal, Buck Fever, Let It Devlop and Swift Fancy. 2 Alkel To Excel, Bella Infrared*, Dyna Steal, Dyna Villa, Jagger Swagger, Shakey Jakey and SH Avatar*. These figures are alarming and the industry in NSW is going to be faced with a severe shortage of greyhounds to fill races, within the next 12 months. More alarming is the fact that there seems to be no significant improvement emerging, judging by the figures over the last 16 months. Letters Trevor says he is located in North East Victoria, near Wodonga, about as far from a track as you can get. Despite this he still shows his faith in the industry with breeding the occasional litter.
Ash Flash litter
INVITATION Invitation to all Owners, Trainers, Studmasters and Breeders. If you have a story to tell about the part you play in greyhound racing, let us know, bred a litter, have a special greyhound, whatever, we’d love to hear from you. editor@victoriangreyhoundweekly.com.au
WODONGA breeder and occasional corespondent , Trevor Rhodes, emailed recently regarding his latest litter, four dogs and four bitches, whelped on 18 June by his National Distance Championship finalist, Ash Flash (October 2011 Velocette x Ashleigh Ella), whose dam is by Where’s Pedro x Sister Inc. (Head Honcho x Casual Design). Trevor chose Australia leading sire Barcia Bale (March 2010 Go Wild Teddy x Princess Bale) as the sire and says that a couple of pups from the litter may be for sale at a later date. They would certainly be a good pick up if you can get your hands on one, especially a bitch, with future breeding in mind. Ash Flash is from a very good litter of seven named, which included Flash Flash, Hillbilly Flash, Poacher Flash, Sharkey Flash, Sistella and Van Carrho Flash. Their dam also has winners on file from both of her other litters, whelped in March 2013 by Bobby Boucheau , then September 2013 by Collision. Ash Flash raced 67 times, for the very good record of 24 wins and 22 placings, winning 12 times over 715 metres at Cannington (41.75), where she also won three times over 642 metres (37.29), three times over 647 metres at Mandurah (36.68), twice over 715 metres at Sandown (42.84), twice over 725 metres at The Meadows (43.02), where she also won over 600 metres (34.83), along with wins over 658 metres at Traralgon (39.54) and 520 metres at Cranbourne (30.64). She was a two time Galaxy finalist and finished fourth in the National distance championship when Sweet It Is won it.

Local expert’s selections for the final are as follows: Ron Hawkswell 1st Mepunga Blazer Brett’s two-pronged attack on Maturity 2nd Opal Nera Classic Final By George Farrugia MGRA Publicity Officer 3rd Fast Times Queensland trainer Tony Brett heads into the Group 1 Maturity Classic with two genuine chances after both star galloper Fast Times and the speedy Opal Nera qualified for Saturday’s $145,000 final. Fast Times – one of five youngsters in the final by Australia’s leading sire Barcia Bale – sat behind early leader Aston Dinnigan before powering home to win the third semi-final in 30.14. One race later, Brett bought up the double as Opal Nera won the speed battle in the run to the first corner, holding off a late challenge from Trixta Rox to get home in 30.20. Brett is no stranger to winning Group 1 races at The Meadows, steering Bogie Leigh to victory in The Meadows’ flagship race – the Australian Cup – in 2004 and Black Enforcer in a Topgun success in 2005. However, he’s hoping his recent luck in Group 1 finals at The Meadows will change, after his star chaser Thirty Talks led in January’s Group 1 Silver Chief final before going amiss down the back straight. His main rival will be Mepunga Blazer, who set The Meadows alight with a commanding 29.63 semifinal win after amazing splits of 5.04 and 17.48 – the second fastest second split this year behind Lightning Frank’s effort in a heat of the Australian Cup. The Jeff Britton-trained chaser was the only greyhound in the semi-final stage to break 30 seconds, but will have to contend with the awkward draw of six in the weekend’s $100,000-to-the-winner final. The semis got off to a rocky start for punters after Dyna Jerry got up at the odds of $50.30 on SuperTAB after a fast 4.99 set up his 30.23 victory over the fast finishing Shadale. Next Saturday’s bumper program will also see the running of the Group 3 Destini Fireball Stayers final, where champion stayer Burn One Down will start a short-priced favourite despite going down to the inform Billy’s Bake in the second of the weekend’s heats. Mick’s Angel gave trainer Allan Meyer his first Group finalist after a fantastic last-to-first win in the opening heat of the series. The daughter of Kilty Lad and Seabrook Lass will start from box eight in the $25,000-to-the-winner final.
Rob Testa 1st Trixta Rox 2nd Mepunga Blazer 3rd Opal Nera Eddie Caruana 1st Mepunga Blazer 2nd Opal Nera 3rd Shadale George Farrugia 1st Opal Nera 2nd Aston Dinnigan 3rd Mepunga Blazer A few statistics on the Maturity Twenty-one favourites have won the Maturity Classic since it was first staged in 1970. Of those ten have started odds on. The race record at Olympic Park was 29.80 held by Storm Glade, since the race transferred to the Meadows the fastest winner is Fernando Bale in 29.50. The longest priced winner is Poetic Magic at $27.40 he won in 2005. The Shortest priced winner is Brett Lee at 1.20 when won in 2001. Graeme Bate won the race on five occasions with Storm Glade (1985), Hay Dinney (88), Northern Legend (95), Shereen Bale (2011) and Barcia Bale (2012). The only other trainers to produce more than one winner are Darren McDonald with Brett Lee (2001) and Hallucinate (2004) and Jason Thompson 2007 Run’s House and 2009 Aston Trivett. In the last decade six of the 10 winners started favourite. Details of all previous winners on page 20

SHADES OF LIPPY Brindle dog, October 2014 Djays Octane* x Pah Leeze. Trained by Karen Pitt at Devon Meadows, for the Shades Of Syndicate. Beautifully bred and has now raced 15 times for two wins and three placings. Handy second, beaten 2.25 lengths, over 595 metres at Sandown (SAP) on 23 July in the race won by Our Mate Wilson (34.99). Ran into trouble when placed there over the same distance on 16 July in the race won by Tobacco Leaf (35.20). Handles the distance well and looks like he’s not far off another win. URANA SMACKO White & blue dog, May 2015 Banjo Boy x Shiwen, trained by John Magri at Avalon, for Laurie Mallia. Has been consistent, with eleven starts now for a win and six placings. Three straight placings over 460 metres at Warragul and 350 metres at Healesville before stepping up in class and distance to 515 metres at Sandown on 23 July, where he started from box three and was beaten 5.6 lengths in the race won by the promising youngster Charli Tee (30.06), trained by Robert Britton. That was a good effort and I’d suggest he’s not far off another win.
