Number 44

Friday 4 August 2017

HORSHAM REOPENS Greyhound Racing resumed at Horsham on Tuesday 1 August (twilight) after the club held a successful picnic meeting last week. Local trainers and some from Ballarat, Bendigo and further afield attended the re-opening and they all seemed happy with how the track performed. Most said the new track was more spacious and had more camber than was previously the case, lending itself to less interference. Stawell trainer, David Gehan had the honour of training the first winner on the new track when Kintamani won the first race in 23.77. Greyhounds seemed to hold their line well. The best time over the 410 metres on opening night was 23.41, while over the 485 metres the best

was 27.56 and it is expected they’ll go quicker than that once the track settles. Representatives from the Tweed Heads Coursing Club, which hasn’t raced since December after selling its land and track, will visit Horsham

in the coming weeks with a view to building a new track identical to Horsham at a new site. Full results from the opening meeting, courtesy of GRV, can be found on page 28 of this week’s Greyhound Weekly.

Tamara needs a hand THE greyhound fraternity has always been one to look after its’ own and give a hand when needed. Tamara Cornell is one of our own, and she is doing it tough at the moment. So let’s see what we can all do, to give her a hand. In 2010 she was diagnosed with breast cancer and over 18mnths, endured intense chemotherapy and radiation which took a good 3 years of her life as she was very unwell throughout the process. After reaching the five year barrier, thinking she would now be cancer free, it returned last year, firstly in the retina of her eye which once again meant having to go though radiation for three intense months, only to find it had then spread to her ovary then aggressively all through her bones. Last October, Tamara was told she had between six and eighteen months to live. Being the strong person she is, she has refused to except that and needs our help with aiming for at least another five years. She has secondary breast cancer all through her bones at the moment and is going through intense chemotherapy until November. In between and after that she wantsto try other treatments which are highly expensive and could never afford this on her own. Tamara is asking for your help to be able to access these different treatments/medicines over the next few weeks/years. It is really not in her nature to ask for help, but with on going costs and hoping for a longer life , she doesn’t know what else to. She told us this week, she is so grateful to be blessed with such beautiful people who are currently supporting her through her current treatment. In the spirit of “Supporting our own”, I believe we should all do whatever we can to give Tamara a hand at the moment. Donations can be made directly to the following bank account: Westpac bank BSB 733254 Account 621016 I am sure all donations will be gratefully accepted. Roger Clark (Editor)

Celebrating Women on Track Introducing Dr Barb Backhoy the new owner of Langwarrin Veterinary Clinic. Dr Steve Manning will still be working part time at the clinic when he returns from his much deserved holiday in October. Congratulations Barb!

Celebrating Women in Greyhound Racing

The Healesville Greyhound Racing Association recently hosted its successful annual Celebrating Women on Track event, drawing more than 100 attendees for a day of racing and High Tea. The event featured scones and champagne but the four ‘ladies-only’ races for women trainers were the highlight of the day. Australia’s only female race caller, Victoria Shaw, did the honours track-side. Club manager Cynthia O’Brien presented the Women on Track Award for service to the industry to veterinarian Dr Barbara Backhoy. “Barbara has been around greyhounds since childhood, she works as a vet at the Healesville, Cranbourne and Warragul clubs and at Lang Lang Coursing Club, she is on the Industry Consultative Group and gives talks and presentations to promote the industry – she has made a fantastic contribution to the industry,” Cynthia said. Barbara’s parents were puppy trainers and her connection to greyhounds was the motivation for her decision to become a veterinarian. As well as working with greyhounds she has one as a pet, Fergie, and a whippet. Cynthia said the day was a fantastic way to acknowledge the terrific contribution women made to the industry. While it was a day honouring women, men were also welcome – although they happily restricted their participation in the ladies-only races to handling the dogs for their wives and partners. Barbara has also been in the news with the announcement she has taken over the Langwarrin Veterinary Clinic.

Stay tuned for more information about Dr Barb Backhoy and the many skills and experience she brings with her to Langwarrin Veterinary Clinic. She looks forward to meeting you when you visit the clinic.

Mepunga ‘Blazes’ to Maturity Glory By GRV Website

Pic - Clint Anderson Jeff Britton won the Group 1 Maturity Classic for the second time in four years on Saturday night when Mepunga Blazer ($2.00) defeated kennelmate Paradiso Lass to reign supreme in the $100,000 to-the-winner age feature. Both Mepunga Blazer, which started even-money favourite, and first reserve Paradiso Lass, which secured a start following the scratching of star Queenslander Fast Times, were able to overcome wide draws in the Maturity to give Britton a rare Group 1 quinella. “It was a real nice surprise they were both able to get across from wide draws. It must’ve been the right side of the track to be on tonight,” said Britton, who won the 2014 Maturity with Mepunga Hayley, which like Mepunga Blazer, was bred and raced by successful breeder Barry Smith, Britton’s partner in many feature race successes. “With Mepunga Blazer drawn in box six I was worried about him getting knocked over badly but he was able to get through the first turn without too much of a touch.” Mepunga Blazer, a son of Britton’s 2011 Adelaide Cup heroine and Maturity finalist Mepunga Nicky, started a warm favourite in the Classic despite his awkward alley, courtesy of a scorching 29.64sec semi-final victory, while he also won his heat of the three-week series in a slick 29.97sec. Aston Dinnigan ($7.10) led from box five, while Mepunga Blazer showed great acceleration after a slow getaway to be sitting ominously in a close second

rounding the first turn, with Britton’s second finalist Paradiso Lass ($ crossing into third. In a commanding display, Mepunga Blazer railed to the lead in the back straight and dashed clear, defeating the hard-closing Paradiso Lass by 1.53 lengths in a fast 29.81sec, with Shadale ($9.10), trained by Jimmy Redenbach, grabbing third. Mepunga Blazer has now won eight of his 14 starts, including five from seven at The Meadows, while he’ll now head to Sandown Park for Thursday night’s National Sprint Championship heats. “I couldn’t really see from behind the boxes but then I saw that both mine had got around the first corner basically untouched,” Britton said. “I knew the leader (Aston Dinnigan) wasn’t overly strong and my two are strong so I was just hoping that nothing went wrong from there. “Mepunga Blazer drives into the first corner really well at The Meadows, which he did again tonight. He hasn’t handled the first turn as well at Sandown when he was younger but he’s a bit more experienced now so we’ll see what happens in the National Sprint heats on Thursday. “He’ll be up against the big boys in the Nationals, so we’ll see how he handles it. “Paradiso Lass is getting better and better all the time. Her record could easily be better because she hasn’t really been blessed with box draws – she’s had a lot of wide draws – and she hasn’t been in a lot of easy races either.” It was a night for the favourites at The Meadows, with superstar Burn One Down careering away with the $25,000 to-the-winner Destini Fireball Stayers Final (725m) earlier in the meeting. Trained by Seona Thompson, Burn One Down dominated betting on the Destini Fireball, starting at $1.50, and the result was never in doubt as he defeated Mick’s Angel by six lengths in 42.59sec, improving his sensational record over 725m at The Meadows to ten wins from 13 starts.

Zinzan Brooke snares Shepparton Thriller By GRV Website

Pic - Clint Anderson

Well-backed favourite Zinzan Brooke claimed a deserved county cup breakthrough when prevailing in a thrilling three-way finish to last Saturday night’s Group 2 CKH Painting Shepparton Cup Final (450m). Trained by Brooke Ennis and husband Jamie, Zinzan Brooke was making his fourth appearance in a provincial feature when he edged out Bewildering and Lucky Chap in the $47,000 to-the-winner Shepparton Cup. The son of Knocka Norris had previously contested the finals of last year’s Ballarat Cup, this year’s Warrnambool Cup and most recently the Bendigo Cup earlier this month, where he started $3.20 favourite but could only finish sixth to surprise winner Landmark. “He’s made three country cups now and he always wins his heat in great fashion so I’m probably biased but I felt like he was due to win one,” a delighted Brooke Ennis said. “It was a great field. Country cups are hard to make and they are extra hard to win.” Zinzan Brooke had won his only two other assignments over Shepparton’s 450m course, a near-record 24.92sec performance in April and a 25.31sec heat victory on Monday, with Lucky Chap, trained by Anthony Azzopardi, the fastest qualifier, clocking 25.16sec. Drawn alongside one another in boxes eight and seven respectively, Zinzan Brooke ($3.40) and Lucky Chap ($4) duelled for favouritism, with Melbourne Cup hero Ando’s Mac ($4.50) and Bewildering ($5.30) also having plenty of admirers. Zinzan Brooke began well to be second to outsider Good Girl Sandy ($17.30), but when Zinzan Brooke

clipped the leader’s heels approaching the home turn Lucky Chap raced to the front. But Zinzan Brooke balanced up and finished strongly along the inside to hold out the fast-finishing Bewildering and Lucky Chap in 25.32sec, with just half a length separating the first three across the line. Zinzan Brooke, which started his career in Queensland, where he won his first seven starts, has now won eight of his last ten and an imposing 24 from 33 overall. “I thought he was drawn where he needed to be and it turned out that way,” Ennis said. “He copped a check on the home turn and I thought it put him out of the race. But he’s had a couple of runs over 500m and his strength got him there in the end. “I really wasn’t sure when they crossed the line but a few people came up and congratulated me and I was hoping he won. “It’s Jamie’s birthday. He couldn’t be here tonight because he’s at home looking after the dogs but he’ll be so happy. The Shepparton Cup has always been a well sought-after country cup and a one time a very important lead up race for the Melbourne Cup. It has been won by some brilliant greyhounds over the years none better than Hall of Famer and local superstar Highly Blessed. Other Melbourne Cup winners included Master Giant and Kantarn Bale. While like Highly Blessed, Bahama Image went on to win an Easter Egg. The race was run over the 440 metres at the old Shepparton Showgrounds until its closure in 2004. 1973 Garner Bin, 1974 Morning Glow, 1975 Tivashley, 1976 Marungi Boy, 1977 Near History, 1978 Relle Louise, 1979 Mannerism, 1980 Proven Bold, 1981 First Question, 1982 Golden Impulse, 1983 Blue Echo, 1984 Blitzem Bill, 1985 Thorgil Magic, 1986 Thorgil Magic, 1987 Nan's Pal, 1988 Fantasy Boy, 1989 Pure Talent, 1990 Highly Blessed, 1991 Bomber Gleeson, 1992 Master Giant, 1993 Head Honcho, 1994 Thorgil Tex, 1995 Hanson Diamond, 1996 Bahama Image, 1997 World Title, 1998 Ashigga, 1999 Star Of Mine, 2000 Kantarn Bale, 2001 Salong Bale, 2002 Knockabout Wok, 2003 Puzzle Prize, 2004 Whisky Assassin, 2005 not run, 2006 Slater, 2007 Overflow Breaker, 2008 Hanify’s Impact, 2009 Gardam Prince, 2010 Din’s Son, 2011 El Grand Senor, 2012 Blackall’s Boss, 2013 Paw Licking, (2014 Not Held), 2015 Azza Azza Azza and 2016 (February) Gotta Get Back (September) Aston Bolero.

NOW AVAILABLE FOR STUD DUTIES

Our weekly selection of greyhounds to follow, based on their breeding and recent performances. NICE WORK Black bitch, April 2015 Trewly Special x Scarlet Maid. Raced and trained at Devon Meadows, by Steven Van Oirschot. Has had 12 starts now for a win and five placings and didn’t have much luck when 14.5 lengths fourth over 515 metres at Sandown (SAP) on 30 July in the race won by Over Indulgence (29.78), who won by 10.3 lengths. Prior to that had a win over 515 metres there (29.64) and two placings from four starts. That run was encouraging enough to back her again next time you see her in. ANNIE LAVA Black bitch, February 2015 Djays Octane* x Born On Lava. Raced by Raymond Drew at Dennington for the Lava Street Syndicate. Beautifully bred bitch from a handy litter and her contribution has been five starts for a win and one placing to date. Won from box two over 515 metres at Sandown (SAP) on 11 June (29.81) then placed 450 metres at Warnambool and twice unplaced at Sandown in next three starts. Last start sixth, beaten 12.1 lengths in the race won by Spyfection (34.81) over 595 metres at Sandown (SAP) on 30 July was first run over that distance and she should heve benefited from that, so follow up. NEW LEVEL Black dog, September 2014, Razldazl George* x Ursula, raced by Jason Italia and trained at Cranbourne by Dennis Langley. Had 34 starts now and has been consistent with 14 wins and 12 placings and probably a touch under-rated. Last start third over 515 metres at Sandown (SAP) 30 July, beaten 2.76 lengths in the race won by Little Black Joe (29.78). Won twice, Geelong and Warragul with two placings in four runs before that. Nostalgia Rhonda Remembers New South Wales greyhound enthusiast Rhonda Singleton became involved with greyhounds in 2009 as a owner and racing them. E A R L Y E D U C A T I O N $85 Prevention is better than cure, right? With breeding numbers down by around 60%, and an estimated 30 -40% of pups not being named, I would like to start a new service - early education. I'd like to see this become my main, if not only service. I feel it's a critical step our industry has neglected for too long, and with the poor percentages above, its important we become more efficient with what we breed. I'll provide details in a day or so, but basically this program is for 3-9 month old pups, with a minimum of 12 weeks to gain real benefit from the intense one-on-one education. But longer the better! There will be 6 stages of which your pup will go through, all designed to ensure your greyhound is a well-rounded, forward, confident and keen chaser, with his/her prey-drive fully unlocked! They'll still get all the standard rearing, but will also get exposed to the kennel life as well as lots of bullring, box and drag lure work. For older pups, at stages 4, 5, and 6, your hound will be a junior race dog, they'll even compete against another pup behind the drag and on the clock, so that'll be great for syndications to keep clients excited! With early and consistent positive reinforcement, I can safely and confidently offer a full refund on the extra service if (IF) your pup doesn't break-in. That's $15 per week refund, even if you use the full 40 weeks, or minimum 12 weeks. (*conditions apply). Steven White with Paua To Roar!
