Darryl Chapman, from Whiteman Creek has the other Barcia Bale litter, which has three dogs and three bitches, from the very well bred bitch, Screaming Bikini (December 2010 Premier Fantasy* x Surpassing), whose dam is by Collision x Frosty Fruits (Just The Best x Reckless Anamdon). She is from a handy litter of ten named, all winners, who won 118 races between them. Her contribution was 25 starts, for four wins and six placings, with two wins over 520 metres at Dapto (30.10) and single wins over 520 metres at Wentworth Park (30.24) and 535 metres at Richmond (31.30). She has 13 named offspring on file from both of her first two litters, whelped in May 2014, by Where’s Pedro (including Oz Ten Tatious, Shifting Gears, Soon Now and Yeah The Boys), then April 2015, by Fabregas (including Dinner Plain, Marilena Franco, Myraki, Striking Bikini and Two Jay). Certainly plenty to like about the well bred youngsters from each of these Barcia Bale litters, as he continues to provide winners in all states of Australia, and is still in great demand with breeders in all states as well.

GCA- Group Race Results Group 1 Topgun - The Meadows 28.10.17

Group 2 Topgun Stayers– The Meadows 28.10.17

OUTSTANDING sprinter, Up Hill Jill (February 2015 Premier Fantasy* x Where’s Demonica) took her record to 27 wins and 18 placings from 50 starts with her outstanding win in last Saturday night’s Group 1 Topgun at The Meadows. Raced by Rose Geall and trained by David Geall at Lara, Up Hill Jill took her stake earnings to $436,906 with her second Group final win, after having previously won the Group 2 Sandown Laurels. She has also finished second in the Group 1 National Futurity, Group 1 Sapphire Crown, Group 1 Peter Mosman, Group 2 Richmond Oaks, Group 2 Warrnambool Classic and Group 2 Bob Payne Sprint. As if that is not enough to impress, she was also finalist in the Group 1 Easter Egg, this year. Ranked a $13.00 chance, from box seven in the outstanding field, she flew the boxes and after getting across to lead at the first turn, she gave nothing else a chance, finishing strongly to win by 3.43 lengths over $3.70 favourite, Aston Dee Bee (box 2), with $6.10 chance, Lightning Frank (box 6) a further three lengths away in third placing. Up Hill Jill has now won three times over 525 metres at The Meadows (29.89), six times over 520 metres at Wentworth Park (29.63), six times over 450 metres at Warrnambool (25.10), five times over 515 metres at Sandown (29.53), three times over 460 metres at Warragul (25.89), twice over 460 metres at Geelong (25.66) and also over 525 metres at Traralgon (30.10) and 450 metres at Shepparton (25.23). Rose and David Geall will no doubt looking forward to the 2017 Melbourne Cup with their outstanding sprinter, and with the record she already has on the board, there is no reason not to think she’ll be one of the early favourites. She has already won Group 2 Laurels at Sandown and has won five times there, 29.58, 29.60, 29.55, 29.53 and 29.56 so certainly knows her way around the track.

PLENTY of excitement at the Meadows last Saturday night before the Topgun sprint, when Fanta Bale was attempting to take her stake earnings past the $1million mark in the stayers invitation event. Bouncing straight to the lead and opening up what looked like a winning lead, punters who took the short odds at $2.60, must have been counting the money. However the Ben Rawlings trained stayer, Bogie Bekim had other ideas, and despite not having a dream run throughout, after starting from box four, he finished with a withering run and had a length to spare at the finish line. Whelped in April 2014, by Bekim Bale, from Bogie Skye (Surf Lorian x Bogie Benz), he has now raced 57 times, for 22 wins and 15 placings with stake earnings of $271,510. Fanta Bale finished a gallant second in the race, with $7.60 chance, Ring The Bell, who recently returned from racing in New Zealand filling third spot in a blanket finish for the minor placings, with Ebby Ripper and Burn One Down, just missing out. Only 2.41 lengths separated the first five, and Burn One Down was certainly the unlucky runner in the race, getting into more trouble than the early explorers. Bogie Bekim has previously had Group 1 success in the 2017 WA Galaxy and he also won the 2017 SA Distance Championship, with a placing in the Group 1 Association Cup. He was also a finalist in the Group 1 Zoom Top, and Group 1 National Distance Championship. He has won eight times over 731 metres at Angle Park (42.97), where he has also won four times over 600 metres (34.65) and twice over 515 metres (29.76), three times over 520 metres at Albion Park (29.91), twice over 715 metres at Cannington (42.12) and also over 720 metres at Wentworth Park (41.96), 725 metres at The Meadows (42.62) and 520 metres at Ipswich (30.54).

Raced and trained by Glenn Rounds at Devon Meadows. Beautifully bred youngster who has impressed at only two starts to date. First up win over 515 metres at Sandown (SAP) from box two on 22 October (29.74), then second there from box five, beaten 0.17 lengths in the semi final won by You Rippa Pippa (30.22). Nice type who looks destined for better things and will improve with experience as well. HEARTS TO HEARTS Black bitch, December 2014 Swift Fancy x Fantasy Parade. Raced and trained by Michelle Nolan at Devon Meadows. Has now raced 16 times for two wins and five placings and has been very consistent. Racing for the first time in four months, when she stepped up in class and distance to 515 metres at Sandown (SAP) on 29 October and was beaten 8.07 lengths in the race won by King Colt (29.63) Started from box two on that occasion and copped a bit of trouble on the way, but it was a solid effort and she looks to be on the improve and not far off another win. VIS VITAE Black bitch, June 2015 Phenomenal x Enduro Miss. Raced and trained at Langwarrin by Russell Edwards and has now had 16 starts for two wins and five placings. Unplaced in three starts Cranbourne and The Meadows before last start third, from box four over 515 metres at Sandown (SAP) on 29 October. Beaten 5.06 lengths in the race won by Tears I’m Not (29.87) but it was a good effort from that box over 515 metres there and she could be worth following. Letters to the Editor are always welcome. GRV Greyhound Care

Corns Corns are a common cause of lameness in greyhounds – both when racing and when retired. They are an unusual problem in that it is almost unheard of in other breeds of dog, and many vets who do not treat a lot of greyhounds may not know what they are when they first see them. Found in the foot pads of the dog, corns are often seen as a circular area or ‘dot’ in the base of the pad. When they first appear, they can be quite small and may look just like a bit of foreign matter that has stuck in the pad. As they get bigger, they start to look quite characteristic – a circle that’s a different colour or texture to the rest of the foot pad. They are normally hard and often quite painful when pressure is applied. Usually the owner or trainer reports the greyhound has been showing signs of lameness that may be worse when the dog is on hard surfaces such as concrete or gravel. The cause of corns is thought to be either a reaction to damage or trauma (where the body safely ‘walls-off’ an area of damage with scar tissue), or due to a viral infection similar to the papilloma virus in humans. It is thought that the viral cause is the most common reason for the appearance of corns according to the book ‘Care of the Racing and Retired Greyhound’.

Remember, there are many causes of lameness – from muscle injuries, damage to bones and ligaments, as well as a variety of foot problems – so a thorough check of ALL possible areas of discomfort is needed. If you look at the foot pads and see a circular area that is painful when you apply some pressure, then your greyhound may have a corn. It is important that you have the greyhound examined by a vet at this stage to make sure you get the correct diagnosis, and to discuss treatment. It is not uncommon to have corns in more than one pad of the foot, or in more than one foot at the same time, so make sure that you check all your dog’s feet. What can be done about corns? Treatments suggested for corns vary according to the size and the severity of the corn. Obviously any treatment is easier when the corn is small, rather than waiting until it is of a size where it is a much bigger job to treat. Treatment might include filing or flattening to take away some of the pain caused by pressure on the corn, but usually the answer is to have the corn removed surgically. There are a lot of other treatments, but you need to discuss them with your vet so that you fully understand the consequences of each choice, and the likelihood of success. At the end of the day, the pain will not resolve unless the corn is no longer pressing on the sensitive tissue of the foot pad – so something will have to be done. In some severe cases, or when the corn is particularly large or keeps coming back, surgical amputation of the affected toe has been performed. Although this will solve the problem permanently in that toe, it’s always possible that another corn could develop in another toe of the same foot. Greyhound Racing Victoria 46-50 Chetwynd Street West Melbourne, Victoria, 3003 Tel:0383291100

How will I know if my greyhound has a corn? If your greyhound appears to be lame, one of the things that you must check is the foot surface and the pads.
