Elite field for Greyhound racing’s Group Two $67,000 Energis Ballarat Cup ( GRV Website) Four dogs who contested greyhound racing’s richest and most prestigious race, the TAB Melbourne Cup, will converge again for this Saturday’s Group Two $67,000 Energis Ballarat Cup. And the recently-crowned Melbourne Cup winner Aston Dee Bee will go head to head with 2016 winner Ando’s Mac. The Myrniong-based Ando’s Mac is sure to have strong local backing from the Ballarat crowd, with trainer Anthony Azzopardi keen to follow on from the success he had in the 2016 Ballarat Cup with Zambora Brockie.

Ando’s Mac is the only local representative in the 2017 Energis Ballarat Cup, after taking out the first heat thanks to an unimpeded run from box eight. Ando’s Mac has an impressive record at his home track, and is now attempting to claim his second Victorian Country Cup after saluting at Warragul earlier this year. Aston Dee Bee is one of three dogs in the field to come from Seona Thompson’s kennels, joining Big Flood and Bewildering. Victorian greyhound racing ambassador and AFL games record holder Brent Harvey will be in

attendance, while there will be a Sports club challenge, a live musical act, a punters club and dining packages available for a family friendly night out. Ballarat has long been considered traditional heartland of Victorian greyhound racing, with a recent report identifying that the industry generated $9.59 million in direct expenditure for the region in 2015-16 while 767 local residents are actively involved in greyhound racing as a participant, employee or volunteer. https://fasttrack.grv.org.au/RaceField/ ViewRaces/276583062

Kilty Lad litter

Kilty Lad IRISH LUCK SYNDICATE, managed BY Stafano Cassar has a nice litter of seven pups on the list this week, by the now Irish based, Kilty Lad (January 2009 Superman x Sisco Train). Kilty Lad Won the Group1 2011 Adelaide Cup, 2011 Group 1 Silver Chief and the 2010 Cannington Group 3 Young Star Classic and was a finalist in the 2010 Group1 Hobart 1000 and Group 1 2011 Easter Egg . The three dogs and four bitches in the litter, are from the beautifully bred bitch, Almani Dotz (October 2011 Premier Fantasy* x Mineola Grand), whose dam is by Brett Lee x Farloe Oyster* (Top Honcho x Farloe Dingle). She is from a litter of four named, with three who raced and two winning, including Ireland’s Oyster who raced 67 times, for 16 wins and 23 placings. Her record shows she raced 23 times, for a win over 545 metres at Ballarat (31.99) and ten placings. Interestingly, she was placed in nine of her first eleven starts and with a bit more luck in running her record who have been a lot better, with a lot of her placings being not that far from the winners.

Walk Hard litter OUR final litter for review this week, has ten pups by the Group 2 Warragul Cup winner, and under-rated stud prospect, Walk Hard (September 2010 Bit Chili x Miss Bling), who was raced and trained at Clyde, by Nicole Mcrae. He is from a litter of eight named, which produced seven winners, who won 57 races between them. He was the standout in the litter, with his 62 starts, resulting in 26 wins and 24 placings, which earned $129,410 in stakes. Researching for this review I was surprise to see that according to my records, he only has 19 named

offspring on file and yet on the Victorian Metropolitan Sires list, for the eleven months to the end of November, He has nine individual winners, who have won 41 races on Melbourne’s two city tracks. His very successful litter from Dirty Angel, includes Angel Dash(11 metro wins ytd), Beanbag (4 wins), Liebig Street (6 wins), Oronsay (8 Wins) and Varuchi Pass (2 wins). His other metropolitan winners this year have been Lektra Stomp and Lektra Stroll (x Trewly Special) and Classy Sparks (x Skeeta). According to GRV’s Fasttrack records he has 12 litters on file so keep an eye out as more of his offspring reach the track in coming months. His litter of eight dogs and two bitches on this week’s list was registered by Sheryl Thomas for the Straight Racing Syndicate and the well bred youngsters are from the beautifully bred bitch, Super Leggera (January 2012 Superman x Sekula Star), whose dam is by Token Prince x Crafty Witch (Awesome Assassin x Star Witch). She is from a litter of 11 named, of which nine raced and the seven who won, recorded 31 wins between them. Her share was a handy 11 wins and 18 placings, from her 74 starts, with four wins over 425 metres at Bendigo (24.14), where she also won over 500 metres (28.30), two wins over 410 metres at Horsham (23.20), two wins over 390 metres at Ballarat (22.26) and single wins over 390 metres at Shepparton (22.35) and 400 metres at Geelong (22.88). Walk Hard’s impressive record as a sire already should see him getting more bitches than he is, with the latest stud service records, in August showing his two for the month taking his ytd total to three. The same can be said though, for most of the more than 400 currently registered stud dogs in Australia/NZ, and that’s without the hundreds of international sires who have frozen semen available to Australian breeders. A sign of the times we live in?

Fernando Bale litter

FROM Dyna Double One to Paul Wheeler’s other all conquering young sire Fernando Bale (March 2013 Kelsos Fusileer* x Chloe Allen), who is creating an enormous impression with breeders in his first season on the sires lists. Greyhounds in the home Meet Gator….

If you can't give Gator a home but would like to help him find one, please go to the FOGAP Facebook page and please share this post and ask others to share. Transport can be arranged for Gator to get him to the right home. Martina Taliano _____________________________________________ Sharyn Marshall says…… We have 8 Greyhounds. 4 girls, 4 boys. This is the floor around my computer - and what do we find! 4 boys! Always. Does anyone else find that the boys are just so clingy. The girls are so much more independent they have their pats then they go away and lie down. But the boys, no way, where I am they are. Just always under my feet and in my face!

Gator loves to hang out with kids and is small dog friendly and will most likely be cat friendly too although he hasn't been tested yet. He isn't the type to live outside, he is all smoochy and his owners say he really wants to spend his retirement laying on the end of the bed, and the lounge, and the beanbag......you get the idea! Gator adores being with people and is very sociable. He will give you lots of laughs and be fabulous company for which ever lucky family he ends up with. Gator is a gorgeous blue brindle and is currently in South Australia. If you are interested in giving Gator a home please contact Mark Latham or myself. I have helped Mark to find a few dogs homes now and he always makes sure they are desexed and vaccinated and that you know their full history.

Dogs to follow DOGS TO FOLLOW

Windy Millar*

Our weekly selection of greyhounds to follow, based on their breeding and recent performances TWO TRIPLE SIX Blue dog, October 2014 Bookkeeper x Brain In Neutral. Raced and trained by Elouise Glover at Ashmont. Has now raced seven times for four placings and although the formguide shows he was beaten by 15.33 lengths at his last start, it was a great run. He was lucky to stay on his feet at the first turn then got into more trouble before finishing second in the race won by Another Bling (29.83) at Sandown (SAP) on 3 December. Prior to that had three placings from four starts, over 535 metres at Richmond and 600 metres at Gosford. Certain to improve on that run next starts and looks like a handy middle distance prospect. WHY NOT MACCA Red fawn dog, November 2015 Fernando Bale x Why Not Donna. Raced by Gail Carter and trained at Devon Meadows by Greg Carter. Nine starts now for a win and four placings, including last start second, beaten 0.6 lengths in the race won by Why That (30.16) over 515 metres at Sandown (SAP) on 3 December. That was fourth consecutive placing and he is racing very consistently at the moment and not far off his second win.

August 2006 Honcho Classic (Head Honcho x Sure Lass) x Any Time Soon (Staplers Jo x Toss Spirit) 52 Starts 14 wins 23 placings Won 2009 Group 1 Belfred Stakes, and 2008 Group 3 Kasco Stakes, with placings at Group level. Outstanding winning percentage as a sire. $700 Frozen, Bendigo or Sandown Contact Richard 0400 578 533

Letters to the Editor Consequently, if something is not working, don't keep Letters to the editor trying it.

Email: editor@victoriangreyhoundweekly.com.au To GOTBAV I note your mention of "inconsistent staying race scheduling".

While I am far from an expert on these matters, it seems to be obvious that the problem is breeding. There has been a general decline in staying abilities and in the use of "staying" sires over the last decade. Everyone want quickies over short trips to get their money back. Some of the few good stayers are actually accidents - Miata for example (her dad never ran past 520m). The only exception I can think of is Space Star but, then again, the rest of Bekim Bale's progeny are slow-starting plodders which never run time (including the Nat Champ winner).

Well, perhaps, but is that the real issue? The answer must be to investigate and evaluate options For some years now authorities seem to have been for improving that breeding performance. Money to do concerned about the need for more stayers. In all states that should not be a problem as you can simply divert they have added bonuses for most non-city staying all the wasted cash being used for bonuses. This might races (which effectively means those of 600-650m or take a few years but it at least has some chance of so) while in Victoria they have rebuilt many middle/ succeeding, in contrast to the current policy. long distance trips while doing other upgrading at those tracks. It would also promise overall benefits as the continuing Neither of these measures has worked. In fact, the trend towards squibs and shorter races (often starting outcome has been negative. on the bend) does not advance the breed. Besides, customers much prefer longer races.  Offering more cash to dogs is not of much use they can't read or open bank accounts. IF you need to convince GRV, try pointing out that asking dogs to run beyond their capability is dangerous  The majority of starters are plodders or dogs from a welfare viewpoint. That principle was well which can't succeed at shorter trips. illustrated by the shocking decline in weaker dogs once asked to run in marathons of 800-900m. Even  Fields are often short - suggesting the demand is Boomeroo was on a drip for 4 days after winning the not that great. Nat Champ at Albion Park, despite being fit as a fiddle and not over-raced. He was never the same again.  All new trips have a bend start, thereby increasing bias and interference and potentially Bruce Teague discouraging some dogs. Letters to the Editor are always welcome, on any  The majority of runners at city tracks cannot run subject. out 700m - even fewer can do it twice in Please make sure your letter contains name and successive weeks (including Fanta Bale - check address, with contact details for verification. the times). Letters can be published with “Name and Address Supplied” if requested.  Interstate performances are even worse. This week's winner at Angle Park barely broke 44 sec (rec 42.50). 

Two of the changes at Vic tracks actually reduced the distance (Bendigo and Warrnambool) which hardly inspires confidence.

As a result, all these races are dubious betting propositions.
