Her opportunities were restricted when she only raced three time, for two placings, both of 450 metres at Ballarat, in a maiden heat and semi final, before she finished fourth in the final, beaten by ten lengths and did not race again. With the absolute dominance of Barcia Bale on the sires lists in all states, it will be interesting to start following the progress of his progeny as they turn to stud. The most interesting at this stage is the emergence of his outstanding son, Dyna Double One, March 2013 x Crystin Bale), who raced 54 times, for 31 wins, nine seconds and six thirds and $1,160,316 in stakes. His first crop of youngsters are now hitting the tracks with impressive results. He is standing at stud with Tony Wiseman’s - Sires On Ice 0413 702 107

Velocette OUR final litter for review from this week’s Victorian list, infortunately has just three pups, by 2009 Australian Cup winner, five time Group race winner, and under-rated sire, Velocette (August 2006 Bombastic Shiraz x Texan Lady). Highett breeder Thomas Welsh registered the litter of one dog and two bitches, who are from the beautifully bred, unraced bitch, Graceful Sky (February 2012 El Grand Senor x Ice Dancer), whose dam is by Spiral Nikita* x Herron Quay (Black Shiraz x Many Tricks). Graceful Sky was a promising race bitch, who unfortunately injured a shoulder in pre-training, so badly that she never made it to the track, despite the best efforts of all concerned. She is from a good litter of five named, which included Cabochon (10 wins), Indian Light (21 wins), My Kinda Music (11 wins) and Pro Jecta (3 wins). She has two named offspring on file from her first litter, Are You Serial (25-0-5-5) and Barkly Beach, (1-0-0-0), who were whelped in Noember 2014, by Vapour Whirl. Group Race Results Group 2 Sandown Laurels - 14 December. Just What the Doctor Ordered! By Michael Floyd

Judy McMahon with Dr. Mino after Laurels final (Pic Paul Munt)

While a tardy start would typically put paid to a greyhound’s winning chances – especially when running just 5.42 to the first split in a group race final – handler Bill McMahon couldn’t have been happier to see his charge fall out of the boxes, believing it was her best chance to avoid trouble and capitalise on the greyhound’s strength. “I was happy as Larry when she missed the kick. She had to miss the kick,” he told Sky Racing’s Dave Carlson straight after the race. “Once we got through the catching pen (the first time) I thought we were home, especially with those two dogs in front, I was pretty confident we could catch them.” Dr. Mino burst onto the racing scene in October when she went through the rich Vic Breeders series undefeated. Last night’s win was her fifth from 10 career starts – all at Sandown Park – and took her career prize money beyond $72,000. The result for the husband and wife team was particularly pleasing given that, with the assistance of their five kids, the family does all of the work to get their home bred pups to the track. “She’s been super from day 1 when we broke her in. The Vic Breeders was the target, then everything played out from there. It’s a good start to her career.” Added Judy, “the kids get a lot out of it as well because they do so much of the work with them when they’re pups, bringing them up through the ranks and handling them in the kennels. There’s some excited people in the family right now.” Dr. Mino’s next assignment sees her drop to a restricted win race event at Sandown Park this Sunday (race 4, box 3) at Sandown Park this Sunday before being set for the heats of the Damsels Dash at The Meadows on Saturday 30 December. The Laurels, greyhound racing’s equivalent to thoroughbred racing’s Oaks, is one of the most highly regarded series in the country with many winners carving out impressive careers both on the race track and in the breeding barn. Notable past winners of the Laurels include Melbourne Cup winners Cheltenham Lass (1965) and Carrington Jade (1975), Australian Hall of Famers Sandi’s Me Mum (1989) and Paua To Burn (2004), and Topgun winner Up Hill Jill (2016).

Judy and Bill McMahon registered their first group race win in 30 years of greyhound training when Dr Mino scored a stunning last-to-first victory in the group 2 Laurels at Sandown Park on Thursday night. Dr. Mino ($5.20) bungled the start and was a clear last out of the boxes spotting the second last runner two lengths past the post the first time. As the field bunched through the first turn, Dr. Mino switched to the rails and dashed through a narrow gap along the rails to move into third and took off in pursuit of early leaders Slingshot Gypsy ($4.30) and Zoom Out ($6.20). She then switched to the outside coming off the back straight, sweeping past the lamp lighters on turning for The Laurels Classic was restricted to female home and powering to a one and half-length win in greyhounds only, born on or after 01/06/2015. 29.83. - 18 -

Welcome Noel THIS week, we are pleased to welcome FoGAP convener, Noel McMahon, as a regular contributor to Greyhound Weekly. Noel is a journalist/media adviser in his other life away from greyhounds and has had two decades of experience working with magazines. Noel wrote this piece for us as his first contribution: The Friends of Greyhound Adoption Program (FoGAP) is a national Facebook group with more than 4,000 members dedicated to providing a 24/7network for owners of pet greyhounds, potential pet greyhound owners as well as trainers, breeders and current owners of racing dogs. FoGAP is a valuable resource dealing with a range of matters relating to life after racing, rehoming of greyhounds, as well as health and socialization issues pet owners can face when a greyhound comes into their life. This group is a safe and hassle free place for everyone to share information, photos and stories about their dogs and it is dedicated to breaking down the barriers, stereotypes and the misconceptions about the life cycle of greyhounds. FoGAP celebrates every stage of a greyhound’s life, before, during and after racing and is quickly becoming famous for re-uniting owners and trainers with their former racing dogs and their new families. Dogs to follow DOGS TO FOLLOW

Windy Millar*

Our weekly selection of greyhounds to follow, based on their breeding and recent performances ESPECIALLY SHIRAZ Black dog, February 2016 Bombastic Shiraz x Especially. Raced and trained at Carnegie by Peter Knott. Not too many youngsters coming through now by the former champion greyhound, Bombastic Shiraz (March 2001 Black Shiraz x Bombastic Blonde). Especially Shiraz was having just his fourth race start, at Sandown (SAP) on 17 December, over 515 metres when he finished a good second, beaten 0.49 lengths in the race won by Fred Dagg (30.11). Prior to that had won over 450 metres at Shepparton (25.63) at his first start then had two unplaced runs at Sandown, not that far away though, and he is certainly improving with experience. KHALEESI GIRL March 2016, Magic Sprite x Josie Bale. Raced by Tony Cortese and trained at Hampton Park, by Mario Cortese. Raced 11 times for four wins and two placings, including recent back to back wins over 311 metres at Cranbourne (17.68) and 350 metres at Healesville (19.63), followed by Sandown seventh and third over 460 metres at Warragul. Started from box seven over 515 metres at Sandown (SAP) on 17 December, when sixth, beaten 9.21 lengths in the race won by the more experienced, Eyes On You (29.84). Done well so far and is certain to improve with more experience over the 500 metre trips. PINGIN’ BEE Black bitch, September 2015 Fabregas x Zipping Genie. Raced by the Play With ‘Em Syndicate and trained for them by Brian Smith at The Rock. Raced seven times now for three placings and looks a likely improver. Beaten 1.9 lengths over 515 metres at Sandown (SAP) on 17 December in the race won by Dr. Jezabel (30.28). Prior to that won 450 metres Shepparton (25.63) and placed over 440 metres at Camberra. Will definitely improve with more experience.

August 2006 Honcho Classic (Head Honcho x Sure Lass) x Any Time Soon (Staplers Jo x Toss Spirit) 52 Starts 14 wins 23 placings Won 2009 Group 1 Belfred Stakes, and 2008 Group 3 Kasco Stakes, with placings at Group level. Outstanding winning percentage as a sire. $700 Frozen, Bendigo or Sandown Contact Richard 0400 578 533

El Grand Senor Breeder/owner/trainer: Carolyn Jones (Rosedale VIC) Breeding: April 2008 Where’s Pedro – Elgrando Gold 43 starts, 35 wins, two 2nds, one 3rd - $533,147 in prize money - Won three Group 1s – Melbourne Cup, Topgun, Maturity Classic - Won $50,000 triple country cups bonus for winning three country cups in a calendar year (Warragul, Traralgon and Shepparton Cups) - Won nine straight races on two occasions - Track records at Horsham 410m (22.80sec); Sale 440m (24.45sec) & Warragul 460m (25.51sec) - Sire of Ando’s Mac (Melbourne Cup), Swimming Goat (won 22 straight in NZ) and several other group class greyhounds including El Magnifico, Marbro’s Man and Weekend Binge. Few greyhounds have captured the attention of Victorians like El Grand Senor in 2010/11. His dominance was such that he was considered virtually unbeatable.

And it all started from the moment his breeder, owner & trainer Carolyn Jones first took him to a racetrack. “The first time Carolyn put him in a box she rang me up and said ‘I think they’ve clocked the lure…she said he couldn’t go that quick,” recalled Carolyn’s mentor, Peter Giles. El Grand Senor was retired to stud after winning the 2011 Shepparton Cup, and he continues to reside at Jones’ property in the Gippsland town of Rosedale.
