Group Race Results Third Hobart 1000 for Rob Britton From Shane Yates Tasracing Website

Rock Up Top ($11.70) gave Rob Britton his third Group 1 Hobart Thousand victory in a thrilling final in Hobart, last Thursday night. The 2017 edition of Australia’s longest running Classic was one for the ages with only a neck separating the first four chasers on the line, in the most exciting finish in the rich history of the time honoured Feature. The favourite Kouta Mayhem had been challenged strongly by the Ted Medhurst prepared High Treason to the turn into the stretch and was left a sitting duck halfway up the home straight. The challenges came left, right and centre with

Rock Up Top hitting the front in the shadows of the post, only to have Print The Money ($5.10) swoop late out wide on the track and its kennel-mate Blue Gum Hill ($5.40) surge through late in the centre. When the judge examined the print there was plenty to look at, the margins coming up as a head, by a short half-head, with Kouta Mayhem a short half-head away fourth. Rock Up Top is raced by Gerard Targett and trained by Robert Britton at Lara he is a Black dog whelped May 2015 by Spud Regis from Proven Wag (El Galo x Blu Pie Girl). Rock Up Top has won 10 and finished a place 16 times from his 54 starts and with the $75,000 first prize for the Hobart 1000 it took his current stake earnings to $133,705. The Hobart 1000 is the oldest feature race final in Australia it was first run as the Hobart Cup at the old TCA circuit in 1935. The race first became known as the Hobart 1000 in 1939, it reverted back to the Hobart Cup for two years in 1942 then was not held during the war years of 1944-45 and when the race recommended in 1946 it was again known as the Hobart 1000. The most notable effort in the history of the Hobart Thousand must be the training feat of Hilda Williamson of Beaconsfield. She won back-to-back Thousands in 1961/62 with her grand bitch Ophir Doll, and just for good measure made it a hat trick with Ophir Gold in 1963. Another notable feat was that of Beaut Dina. She won the event run in 1976 and was the dam of Scene Control, which won the last ever Hobart Thousand run at the T.C.A. in 1980. Both were owned and trained by Ted and Laurie Rigby of Evandale. Arguments will always rage over the greatest dogs to win the Thousand. The best interstate chasers to gain victory would have to be Rookie Rebel (1958), Benjamin John (1969), (which ran down the immortal Zoom Top), Black Aztec (1981), and the freak Brother Fox (1985). Amongst the very best of the locals to salute would have to be Ophir Doll (1961/62), along with Royal Griffin (1978), True Vintage (1988), Bomber’s a Flyer (1996), Top Shiraz (2000) (who held off the speedster Brett Lee) and Black Caleb (2002) who defeated Melbourne Cup winner Classic Capri. Race record over the 457m trip - 2005 winner Ralph The Mouth 25.60. In 2011 the winner was Dyna Tron who was later judged the AGRA & Victorian Greyhound of the Year, he narrowly beat local champ Rewind. ………./19

Greyhounds in the home Friends of Greyhound Adoption Program http://www.facebook.com/groups/144096608971567/

Socialisation

Noel McMahon All greyhounds are individuals with their own idiosyncrasies, habits, likes and dislikes and they all come complete with a set of expectations and structures and routines that they become accustomed to in their rearing, education and racing. While greyhounds cover the whole spectrum of personalities they also share some very common and adoring traits as well. For the vast majority life is very happy, very structured and they learn to love and even crave their daily routine. However in retirement and when they are making the transition from kennel life to the strange new world of “Planet Pet” they asked to shed their routine, lose everything that they have become familiar with and learn the new ways expected of them in domestic life. While there are exceptions, the vast majority of greyhounds are well suited to life as a pet but they don’t always get there in the same time or by fitting into some standardized program. For some the transition to pet life is simple and they adjust quickly but for others this time of change can cause some to become confused, scared, sad, disoriented and naughty or destructive. This uncharacteristic behavior means that these are the dogs that are most at risk because it does not enable them to show their true personalities or how wonderful they could be as a domestic pet. At this unsettling time of their life it is even more important that they are treated as dogs with individual personalities who learn at different rates. Some dogs need more help than others but the nature of high volume rehoming programs doesn’t always allow the time for staff to spend working with dogs on an individual basis. So what can be done to make the transition from kennel life to the couch as easy and smooth as possible? Don’t set your dog up to fail. Have a plan to transition dogs from racing to pet life which removes them from the racing kennel environment and exposes them to more domestic routines. Expose them to small dogs so they can become accustomed and learn that they are not something to be chased or chomped but just a part of normal life. Importantly encourage your dogs to learn how to be calm and not so reactive. If you kennel or property is not set up to do this sort of training, look to foster carers or other trainers who have successfully retired their race dogs and who can help with de-tuning your race dog and give it a genuine taste of what is expected at a GAP preassessment.

There are trainers all over Victoria who have dogs retiring all year round and many of them face the same time or practical problems when it comes to rehoming and winding down their race dogs. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if GRV or some private entrepreneur was able to establish regional programs or local groups who can undertake this sort of training to make the transition from kennel to couch that much easier for racing owners and their dogs? It means more dogs in homes and massive reductions in euthanasia rates and less political pressure on the greyhound industry. Greyhound Weekly is fully committed to a national approach to the rehoming of retired greyhounds.

Greyhounds in the home FIREWORKS WARNING

What do u mean I have space issues?

With Christmas out of the way it is still important to be mindful of another couple of summer season hazards for our dogs. Fireworks- Fireworks can drive a dog insane with fear and in their freaked out state they panic, jump fences and escape, injuring themselves or getting lost. Don't take any risks with their safety Never leave your dog outdoors on New Years Eve. Put the dog inside with the TV going and/or make plans for someone to baby sit to ensure they are safe. FINALLY Christmas Food Christmas means there is a lot of waste food and cooked bones which means danger for your dog getting into rubbish bins or being feed crap food by well meaning relatives and friends. Throw all cook bones and scraps into a sealed garbage bin and hide all foods like chocolate. Don't feed high fat foods like cooked sausages as pancreatitis is a real threat. The last thing anyone needs is an emergency visit to the vet for something totally avoidable.

Dogs to follow DOGS TO FOLLOW

Windy Millar*

Our weekly selection of greyhounds to follow, based on their breeding and recent performances TANSY GIRL Brindle bitch, February 2016 Stagger x Bella Mikado. Raced by Tony Cortese and trained for him at Hampton Park by Mario Cortese. WOK FRIED YABBY Black dog, November 2015 KC And All x Go Rubber Nose. Raced and trained by David Burnett at Little River. These two come from the same race, with no form recorded, as the first race at Sandown (SAP) on 24 December was declared a no race, when the sprinklers activated just as the race started. Didn’t look to be much in to me, but that’s easy to say, sitting at home, watching on TV and I am sure the stewards made the right decision. These two had mixed fortunes in the race at extremes, with Tansy Girl having what appeared to be a bad fall at the first turn when trying to get across from the dreaded six box. Prior that that she had raced 15 times for three placings and as long as she has taken no harm from the run keep an eye on her next start. Wok Fried Yabby on the other hand, pinged the boxes and led for most of the aborted journey, which was bad luck for those that backed him, but fear not, he’ll do it again very soon. He had raced nine starts before that for four placings, but he will win very soon.

August 2006 Honcho Classic (Head Honcho x Sure Lass) x Any Time Soon (Staplers Jo x Toss Spirit) 52 Starts 14 wins 23 placings Won 2009 Group 1 Belfred Stakes, and 2008 Group 3 Kasco Stakes, with placings at Group level. Outstanding winning percentage as a sire. $700 Frozen, Bendigo or Sandown Contact Richard 0400 578 533

Won 425 to 600 metres Came from box two and found trouble when As close as you can get to Turanza Bale on second, beaten 14 lengths in the race won by Adam the dam side.
