Heather’s Noel Banks Medal This year’s recipient of the Noel Banks Medal has been involved in coursing since late 1980’s. Started off as a volunteer at Lang Lang and has been on the NCA Executive since early 2000’s during this time serving as both Secretary and Treasurer. She was instrumental in saving our great sport when it looked like Coursing was going end meeting with Government leaders, providing evidence of why our sport should stay. She has a passion for greyhound racing but coursing is her by far her favourite aspect of the sport. During her time on the Executive she more often than not put her own dogs on the backburner to make sure everyone else in the Coursing family was okay and looked after. The ideas notebook was a permanent fixture on her side of the bed just in case she had another brilliant idea at 2am ! She has definitely moved the NCA into the computer age and her book keeping skills are second to none always ensuring that the I’s were dotted and the T’s were crossed. One of her favourite sayings is “ make it transparent, then nobody can question what you have done”. This years recipient of the Noel Banks Medal for Outstanding Service to the Coursing Industry is
Mrs. Heather Villinger
Carolyn Mills, who presented the Noel Banks Medal to Heather, proudly wearing her medal.

SAWTELL breeder, Gregory Agius has a nice litter of ten pups on the list this week by perennial stud success, Collision (August 2001 Awesome Assassin x Rumble Spirit). The five dogs and five bitches are from the well bred, lightly raced bitch, Uncensored (February 2014 Go Wild Teddy x Tocsin), whose dam is by Pure Octane x Sound Lee (Brett Lee x Sound The Alarm) and remember, Sound The Alarm is by the successful Irish import, Barneys Alarm* x Skyline Miss (Hua x Fitzroy Lass). She is from a litter of five named, with four winners and she only raced once for an unplaced run over 440 metres at Sale in July 2016.

73 22 litters (Ave 6.0)
* Import or O/seas based. Totals
THIS week’s review of litters selected from the long list in the NSW Whelping Report for the week ending 31 October, starts with two litters by leading national sire, Barcia Bale (March 2010 Go Wild Teddy x Princess Bale). Musswellbrook breeder, Maureen Sharman has the first of the two litters, which has seven dogs and six bitches, from the well bred bitch, Asha Tanga (May 2011 Where’s Pedro x Ami Tanga), whose dam is by Whisky Assassin x Belltanga (Head Honcho x Lyntanga). She is from a litter of ten named, all winners led by Pedro On Tap (14 wins), her 12 wins, Just Run It (10 wins) and Prince Tanga (10 wins). Her 12 wins, from 74 starts, with 25 placings, were over 520 metres at Wentworth Park (29.92), 400 metres (22.48) and 600 metres (34.93) at The Gardens, 400 metres (22.61), 450 metres (25.15) and 565 metres (32.09) at Maitland and 535 metres at Richmond (30.32).
Goodesy litter NEXT, we have a litter of eight pups by Goodesy (November 2007 Collision x Frosty Fruits). Registered by Tomingley breeder, Robert Ingram, the two dogs and six bitches, are from the very well bred, maiden performer, Bryden Kinny (March 2013 Kinloch Brae* x Where’s Tobin), whose dam is by Where’s Pedro x Mrs Beeslee (Collision x She Sprant). She is from a litter of nine named with two winners from the six who raced. On the track she raced just six times, for one placing, over 516 metres at Dubbo, in April 2016. Probably best to overlook her form on the track and concentrate on her pedigree. Kinloch Brae* has been a great success as a sire, both here and overseas, and with names like Molotov, HB’c Commander, Fortress and I’m Slippy in his pedigree, I will be surprised if we don’t see some very good stock come from his daughters in the stud ranks over the next decade. Certainly worth keeping an eye on…..

NCA Coursing Awards - 2017 Season Noel Banks Medal
Noel Banks Medal winner Heather Villinger, pictured here with Carolyn Mills, who presented the award and NCA President, Peter Craig. In presenting the award, Carolyn Mills paid special tribute to “Mr Banks”
Last Outlaw
Mr Banks as I always called him was someone highly regarded amongst greyhound breeder, trainers, administrators and especially the coursing fraternity. I was 10 days old at my first coursing meeting at the age of 6 weeks went with Mum & Dad to his Cranbourne property so yes I knew Mr Banks all of my life. He was always a very well spoken man willing to share his knowledge with anyone who needed some advice. My fondest memories of him were of him and his brother Ken standing on what our family fondly called Banksy’s Hill at Lang Lang watching the dogs heading to slips & the courses go by, always arriving in his big brown Nash Rambler with his felt hat on his head and the race book in his hand. His love for coursing and everything about the sport played a huge part in his life. His honesty and integrity were second to none; Mr Banks lived and breathed coursing and greyhounds. Over the years he volunteered numerous hours to ensure that coursing was always in good order and was heavily involved in securing the land where the Lang Lang Coursing ground is currently. Tribute to Noel Banks OAM
Banks devoted a lifetime to sport but particularly to his first passion, coursing. Banks became a member of the NCA executive in 1955, representing the Tynong Coursing Club. He commenced as NCA secretary in 1969, initially for a three-month period, but stayed in the position for 17 years. Before joining the NCA, Banks was one of the original directors of the Melbourne Greyhound Racing Association (MGRA) and was appointed to the Greyhound Racing Control Board (GRCB) in 1964, which he served with distinction for 24 years. “Noel was proactive and always searching for ways to improve coursing. He was a deep thinker, and he didn’t want his name up in lights,” Mills said. “And he wouldn’t stand for any skulduggery. He was straight down the line and kept a lot of people honest.”

Focus on ….. South Australia Judy Hurley’s “Dynasty of Emerley Park” (Continued from last week.) What an incredible journey that Peter and I started out on over 15 years ago, December ’02 to be exact. That’s when we decided with Kerri and her first husband to purchase Leuders property at Two Wells. Both a bit game at our age, but hey, we all think we are invincible don’t we? We only had a small team then, with just 4 racing kennels, but the ‘breakers’ and rearers were in full swing. At the end of ’04, John Oehme offered Eudunda Eudunda to us as a brood bitch. Had a look at her breeding and noted that she was a “Hotshot” bitch, and whilst she had had a history of cramping, she still had been a very good race bitch. To cut to the chase, we decided to take her and bred with her to Royal Assassin – pups born in February 2005. This litter included : Emerley Carlos, Dakkiah, Emerley Regal, Emerley Shine, Eudunda Assassin, Eudunda Royal, Lee’s Pride, Window Shopper. But, the star of the litter of course was Emerley Carlos (Ra to the family) – with a Group 3 and fast times to his credit (29.56 at Angle Park and 30.55 at Gawler), he won 31 out of 64 starts and eventually retired due to a stopper bone injury which he had carried all his racing career. Emerley Shine won the Track Star award at Gawler in 2008 for her consistent performances and the others all won races as well. However, with Emerley Carlos being offered to breeders, he certainly left his mark with only 14 bitches served, he went SA Stud Dog of the Year for 4 years in a row, with one year producing over 100 winners. His best litter was to Tony Lagana’s good bitch, Avid Willow – which in turn produced Fire Tyson, who has sired winners as well. Her next litter to History Lesson, did not reach the heights that her first litter had and we were a bit disappointed – the litter included Back When, Emerley Joker, Emerley Kist, Emerley Phoenix and Emerley Riddler. Her third and final litter was to Big Daddy Cool and left two wonderful broods for us, Emerley Belle and Emerley Charmer and also included Khandi Kist. Emerley Belle was a good race bitch (until she hit one of the light posts in the centre of the track after a bad fall and jumping the running rail to continue chasing the lure) – she was mated to Cosmic Chief and produced Farmeroo (for Ken Gill) who was a prolific winner, her next litter to Oaks Road produced Emerley Avenue, Check Yo Self, Oaky Doaks, Emerley Lane, Ashon Road, and Beau Street. Her little to Magic Sprite produced Emerley Sprite, Emerley Dryad (Gawler Track Star 2017), Emerley Fairy and Emerley Nymph. Her final little to Cosmic Rumble was a disappointment with Emerley Cosmic and Emerley Cosmos being her only two winners.
Unfortunately Belle was euthanized in 2017 with a very aggressive brain tumor. Her litter sister, Emerley Charmer, has also produced for us with her first litter to El Grand Senor producing that wonderful bitch – Emerley Senorita. Charmer’s litter to Velocette produced Emerley Ice and Emerley Azure, with a litter to Royal Assassin not producing at all, but her final litter to Nolen has also left Emerley Nolen, Emerley Storm, Emerley Giggler and Emerley Mee Too. The line continues on to this day with Emerley Avenue having her first litter to Humdrum – with 6 brindle puppies born 20 November 2017, and I am pleased to advise that Check Yo Self will be joining the kennels with a straw already purchased to Pantera Nera. Emerley Senorita could steal the thunder here – her first little to Magic Sprite has just joined the racing kennels and already 4 of the 5 pups have won 6 races – Emerley Jose, Emerley Again, Emerley Mine and Madam Onyx with Emerley Senor yet to race. She had her first litter in April ’16 with a return to racing after she drove everybody mad wanting to race again. She won at coursing, over the 515 at Angle Park and 400 at Gawler, running a PB of 22.62 when winning the Gawler Classic. Her second litter to Zero Ten (Import), are just 9 months old and looking the goods (4 dogs, 4 bitches) whilst her latest edition is 3 dogs, 3 bitches to Worm Burner! Has to be an Emerley Burner in there somewhere! Everybody is related to somebody! But, what a wonderful dynasty. Who would have thought that the resultant puppies would have kept on producing for Emerley Park – and they are still producing. This has been a journey of joy, sorrow, happiness and love for these wonderful dogs. Even if I can hear Emerley Avenue barking her head off in the broodie yards! I can still hear Peter giving the odd bit of advice (?) from a distance and for those of you that knew him, you would understand what I mean. I feel honoured to have had these dogs in my life, to have chosen their sires, to have reared and educated the resultant babies and to continue to place them in their forever homes. Thank you to those people on the way who trusted me with their “pride & joy”, to the many people who have helped me on my journey and last, but not least, thanks to the “munsters”! Judi Hurley

GOTBA News
2017 in review—continued GOTBA firmly believes in a breeder reward scheme, provided it rewards excellence in breeding based on actual results on the track. In response to repeated GRV concerns surrounding reduced breeding, GOTBA repeatedly advised that a breeder bonus system should be brought back to assist with stimulating quality breeding. It was very pleasing to see a breeder bonus return in the prize money proposals mid-year and then be implemented on the back of GOTBA's, members and participant feedback. Not a bad result for a small group of passionate volunteers! Looking forward to 2018, GOTBA will be a key member of the working party, along with GRV and the Clubs, whose purpose is to develop templates for use by participants to comply with Code of Practice requirement, and plan to run Code of Practice seminars for Members in preparation for implementation. In addition, the Committee will devote time to addressing the shortcomings in the Planning Guidelines and will also have a Member sitting on the Racing Reference Group. We are proud of the work done on behalf of our members, greyhound racing and all participants and would like to take the time to thank those members who contribute to the ongoing improvement of the sport by joining the Association and supporting the GOTBA Committee. The Committee extend warm thanks to the members who attended the AGM this year. Only five nominations were received for the five vacant Committee positions, so elections were not required, although John Cheeseman has been forced to take leave, through illness.
After the main AGM business was completed, including the President’s report from Sandra Reed which highlighted the work of GOTBA in 2017 on behalf of participants, an informal Q & A session was conducted. Members raised a number of issues including: the circumstances surrounding the closure of Geelong and issues relating to catching pens the introduction of the finish on lure at Geelong in the short term and the need for adequate training for lure drivers the need for extensive trials incorporating participant feedback on any proposed change to track infrastructure including lure systems the need for an apprenticeship/mentoring program for new participants to complement more extensive education materials the need to build membership numbers and secure wider support for the GOTBA from owners, trainers and breeders which would add strength to stakeholder submissions the lack of confidence at present given the uncertainty surrounding the Code of Practice the possibility of working with other animal based industries in developing an animal industry based political lobbying group the need for on-going support for greyhound racing from the State Government and Opposition and a desire for certainty to give participants the confidence to invest in breeding litters. Sandra Reed spoke positively about this bi partisan support at present race scheduling and grading issues including limited veterans races and inconsistent staying race scheduling Overall, it was widely viewed as a positive meeting and the Committee were impressed with the level of engagement by members on the night. The Committee has commenced investigating all of the matters raised as we progress into 2018. Leanne Crawford The Greyhound Owners Trainers and Breeders Association of Victoria, Inc.
