The Robert Britton-trained Victorian stayer is one of the most consistent and versatile greyhounds to ever grace the racetrack, and she now heads to the breeding barn after a career that has seen her claim the Australian prize money record ($1,365,175) and a record number of Group 1 wins (nine). She is also the only greyhound to win at Group 1 level in sprint, middle distance and staying events. Britton said that although the injury isn’t serious, at three-anda-half years of age and with 42 wins from 63 starts, the time was right to retire her. A decision on which sire Fanta Bale will go to is yet to be determined.

Incidentally, Fanta Bale’s kennelmate, young gun stayer Rippin’ Sam, finished second in last Saturday night’s $100,000 to-the-winner Association Cup (720m) final at Wentworth Park.

He raced 32 times for the excellent record of 21 wins and two second with stake earnings of $90,785, remembering this was 2007-2008. He won five times over 457 metres at Gold Coast (25.40), four times over 520 metres at Albion Park (29.70), three times over 366 metres at Capalaba (19.58), twice over 520 metres at Wentworth Park (29.56), twice over 457 metres at Geelong (25.50) and also over 515 metres at The Gardens (29.25), 450 metres at Maitland (25.01), 450 metres at Warrnambool (24.81) and 530 metres at Cannington (30.01). GCA Group Results - Launching Pad Review Beware The Beast-Rising Star Claims Launching Pad By Michael Floyd

Beast Unleashed showed why he is regarded as one of the country’s most exciting chasers with a brilliant all of the way victory in the $210,000 group 2 Launching Pad at Sandown Park last Thursday night. Taking full advantage of his rails draw, Beast Unleased led narrowly through the first turn before unleashing his trademark mid-race pace to open a three length margin down the back straight. The move would prove pivotal, Chief’s Sidekick began to improve off the back straight and cut the margin to less than a length in the run to the line. However, the $2.70 favourite prevailed, stopping the clock in a series best 29.34 and remain undefeated throughout the series. “I’m lost for words,” said Peter Lagogiane, who trains the greyhound in partnership with his wife, Jodie. “A big thank you to the dog. He’s the one that does it all, us trainers we just feed him, train him, and make sure they’re sound and that’s it. He’s the one with the motor, we just fine-tuned it. “I’m tickled pink for my family, and for the owner Dawn Garrett.” Lagogiane began preparations for the $410,000 sweepstakes series after a number of impressive performances in his home state of New South Wales. A plan was put in place to ensure the dog was given every opportunity for success in the series, one of the richest greyhound racing in the country. “I looked at this race many months ago. I had to make sure that he was going to get to the 500m, and after he put some brilliant trials back in New South Wales that was the end of it, I knew it was going to happen. “We’ve been up and down for about seven weeks now, but we have stayed here the last three weeks. (Melbourne Cup winning trainer) Jason Mackay gave me some advice, he said if I want to win this, you’ve got to stay here you don’t travel up and down. He said ‘how do you feel after travelling that much, imagine how the dog feels,’ so a big thank to Jason for giving me that advice. “And a big thank you too to Anthony Azzopardi and his family for putting us up. When he saw the dog trial he said he can win this.” Lagogiane has spent a considerable amount of time away from his young family during the season and was delighted to celebrate the victory with them, as well as Beast Unleashed’s owner Dawn Garrett, track side. “It’s the first time I’ve actually been away from my family for this long. They flew down for the

occasion, my wife pre-booked last week before the semis. She said, ‘don’t worry, the dog will just win.’ I said, ‘that’s a mock.’ “It’s the first time I’ve actually been away from my family for this long. I hope I can learn from it, get a bit better and go on to bigger and better things.” Beast Unleashed, who doesn’t turn two until April 3, has now won seven of his eight career starts and has already amassed over $177,000 in prize money. It was the biggest win of Lagogiane’s career, and while his rising star has the greyhound racing world at his feet, his next assignment is unclear. “We’ll sit down and work out what we’re going to do with him next. There’s the Warrnambool Cup, there’s the Speed Star, there’s a lot of races. He’s actually nominated for the Richmond Series too. We’ll give him a little rest now and work out what we’re going to do.” It was the popular blue dog’s second success at group level in as many starts following his recent group 2 Horsham Cup success.

Beast Unleashed post-race after winning the Launching Pad (Pics Clint Anderson) After the winner the field finished in the following order 2nd Chief’s Sidekick ($4.30) 3rd Dyna Patty ($7.80), 4th Trixta Rox ($26.70), 5th Tornado Tears ($17.50), 6th She’s Gifted ($9.70), 7th Navajo Bear ($13.70) and Saint David ($5.30). Beast Unleashed is a Black dog whelped April 2016 by Barcia Bale from Little Miss Hap (Knocka Norris x Surf Queen) he is raced by Dawn Garrett and trained by Peter & Jodie Lagogiane from Llandilo in New South Wales. He has raced eight times for seven wins. The $150,000 first prize for the Launching Pad took his stake earnings to $177,235.

Todd McKenney to front inaugral National Adoption Day

In a national first, every Australian state will combine next month for the GAP National Adoption Day with Sky Racing signing on as a naming rights sponsor. Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia and Tasmania will each host an adoption day on April 29 as part of a nation-wide push to boost awareness of greyhounds as pets. Theatre star, radio host and TV personality Todd McKenney has signed on to be the official ambassador for the National Adoption Day. McKenney, who has two pet greyhounds of his own, said he had fallen in love with the breed since learning about greyhound adoption from a friend. “They are such a beautiful breed and often misunderstood. People’s perception of a greyhound and the reality of what a greyhound is actually like as a pet can often be two different things,” McKenney said. “They’re lazy, they’re loving and they run like the wind – it’s amazing to watch. But they are just really relaxed dogs. They are chilled out, I love that energy around me, they’re just slow, lazy and gorgeous.” Victoria’s adoption day will be held at The Meadows racetrack, running from 11am to 3pm. Greyhound Racing Victoria’s adoption program adopted out a record 1314 dogs in 2016-17, smashing

the record set the previous year of 798. GRV also recently opened the GAP Café, the first Melbourne-based café to have a greyhound theme with the intent of being a city-based showcase for its adoption program. Last weekend the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club hosted GRV’s fourth greyhound community day, a concept that invites pet greyhounds and their owners from around the state to meet together and socialise. GRV CEO Alan Clayton said the National Adoption Day was another initiative that fit with GRV’s focus on animal welfare as its overriding priority. “We want to ensure the best possible life for every Victorian greyhound before, during and after their racing careers,” Mr Clayton said. “It is wonderful to be able to unite with the greyhound racing governing bodies of every other state in Australia to present what will be a momentous day for greyhound adoption in this country.” Register your interest now: http://nationalgreyhoundadoptionday.com.au/

GCA Group Race Reviews After the race Up Hill Jill's trainer David Geall said: By Jeff Collerson GRANSW Website "The three races on the national calendar we all want to win are Sandown's Melbourne Cup, the Australian Cup at The Meadows, and Wenty's Golden Easter Egg. "It has been a dream of my wife Rose, who owns Up Hill Jill, and myself, to win this race, and to do it with a greyhound we have bred ourselves is just wonderful.'' Up Hill Jill won last year's Group 1 Topgun at The Meadows and the group 2 Sandown Laurels but Saturday's win ended a frustrating run of defeats in group 1 finals in Sydney. Despite her win there are no immediate plans to retire Up Hill Jill. "She won't let us retire her, she just loves to race,'' owner Rose Geall said. GGA Group Race Reviews Simon Keeping’s Group 1 Association Cup Saturday night's other Group 1 event at Wentworth Park, saw bush greyhound Simon Keeping ($7) stage a last-to-first performance to win the $75,000 to the winner Association Cup. Raced by his breeder Shayne Stiff from Dubbo and trained by Marty Hallinan at Clergate, near Orange, Simon Keeping whizzed past hot favourite Rippin' Sam ($2) entering the back and raced away to win by just on six lengths. Simon Keeping covered the 720m in a fast 42.10, which compared well with the race record of 41.78 set by Victoria's Sweet It Is in 2014. Stiff disclosed after the race that he had been about to "sack'' Simon Keeping from his team after the dog performed ingloriously at Grafton last year. "I had a huge bet on Simon Keeping and he went terrible in an ordinary race so I phoned Marty Hallinan, a close friend, and told him I wanted to sell the dog,'' Stiff said. "Marty persuaded me to let him have a crack at training Simon Keeping and he put him in a paddock with a litter of little puppies for six weeks. "Simon Keeping had the time of his life and when Marty put him back into work he was a different dog, a lot happier in himself and anxious to race.'' In other action at Wentworth Park on Saturday night the Dennis Barnes-trained Nangar Jill led throughout to defeat her kennelmate Nangar Ace in the Group 3 Ladbrokes Magic Maiden, while Big Black, trained by Donna Campbell, stormed home to take out the Group 3 The Ambrosoli, the consolation final of the Easter Egg. Hot favourite Winsome Money began brilliantly to lead throughout for owner-trainer John Finn in the Group 3 New Sensation and Real Simple, trained at Yass by Neil Staines, showed dazzling early pace for an all-the-way win in the $15,000 to the winner Ultra Sense final. After the first and second in Association Cup, the field finished in the following order 3rd Ebby Ripper ($6.50) 4th Billy’s Bake ($17), 5th Zipping Katelyn ($4.80), 6th Tahiti Pearl ($101), 7th Big Daddy Bee ($21) and Techno ($26). Simon Keeping is a Black dog whelped May 2015

by Bekim Bale from Kim Keeping (Bit Chili x Sweet Keeping). Simon Keeping is raced by Shayne Stiff and trained by Martin Hallinan he has raced 29 times for nine wins and eight placings. Hannah Rasnson Asks… Sorry for the long post FoGAPpers, but I need your advice. We adopted Nelson in mid-March last year. A couple of weeks in he developed a nasty cough. Our lovely new vet (not a greyhound vet) diagnosed kennel cough. The cough came and went until it finally just disappeared - after five trips to the vet, four rounds of antibiotics and prednisalone, and lots of worry! But now 12 months later it's back, last night he coughed so much he coughed up some blood (which happened last time as well). Thankfully I had some doggy cough syrup left in the cupboard. I don't think it's kennel cough for a number of reasons. But could it be allergies? Seems very odd that it's come back at the same time of year. If it keeps up we'll be off to the greyhound vet, but in the meantime does anyone have any ideas?

Who says greyhounds and cats can't get along. Lil my retired racer sharing a couch with my cats . Alison Audrey

Paula Maree So weird. Can be ex racers from kennels but they know how to find a pillow and put their head on it. Must be in their genes. Lol - 25 -
