Gap Café now open Greyhound Racing Victoria’s adoption program now has a city-based showcase with the opening of the GAP café. The café is the first in Melbourne to have a greyhound theme and unlike most other food and beverage venues, dogs are allowed inside the premises as well as an outdoor area featuring decking and grass. The café has been built to promote to people in metropolitan Melbourne our beautiful greyhounds and increase the interest in greyhound adoptions. It is based a short walk from Greyhound Racing Victoria’s Chetwynd St offices in West Melbourne and is just 100 metres from the popular Flagstaff Gardens. Minister for Racing, Martin Pakula officially opened the GAPCafé on 14 March. “The Greyhound Adoption Program café will help to improve animal welfare by making adoption even easier and driving up the number of rehomed racing dogs. We’re supporting the greyhound racing industry because it employs thousands of Victorians and injects hundreds of millions in the economy,” Minister Pakula said. With GAP’s headquarters based in Seymour in rural Victoria, GRV CEO Alan Clayton said it was important GAP was visible in the city, as evidenced by
the Baxter facility in south east Melbourne. “Since opening in 2015, we have adopted almost 500 dogs from Baxter alone,” Mr Clayton said. “Given the large number of people in metropolitan Melbourne, we want to promote our dogs to the largest audience possible.” Clayton said the café was another example of GRV’s focus on animal welfare as its overriding priority. “It can be an adjustment for greyhounds not only to go from life as racing animals to life as pets.

Carnegie breeder trainer Peter Knott is making a name for himself thanks to the success of his 25-month -old litter by Bombastic Shiraz out of Especially. The litter includes Especial Shiraz and Go Commando, who ran first and second respectively in heats of the recent Group 2 Launching Pad (515m) series at Sandown Park before being unplaced in the semi-finals. Knott, who lives on a house block and is a painter by trade, said he has invested heavily in the litter. “This was the very last straw of Bombastic Shiraz so it was worth a lot of money. I paid $20,000 for the straw. The stud fee combined with the costs of getting the seven pups to the racetrack has cost me around $50,000 in total,” he said. Especial Shiraz is the only greyhound Knott trains, however he owns all seven in the litter. He breeds his litters at home and keeps the pups in his backyard until they are about four months of age. “At 16 weeks I send my pups to be reared in Pearcedale by Justin Illman, who is the best commercial rearer I’ve found, and after that they go to Kevin McNamara, near Maryborough, for breaking in. The McNamaras do a fantastic job that is second to none, and the same can be said for Dr Alistair Smith and his team at the Sandown Vet Clinic, because when breeding and racing you need the assistance and guidance of a valued veterinary surgeon,” he said. This is the fifth litter Knott has bred since starting out as a greyhound breeder in 2007, and he is proud that all seven pups have made it to the racetrack, with three winning on city tracks. He said successful breeding starts with careful selection of the sire and dam. “I remember listening to an interview a few years ago with Paul Wheeler, who said he only breeds with females that have won multiple city races, and to me, that’s the first rule of thumb,” Knott said. “Then when it comes to selecting a sire I use the services of Pedigrees By Design, which is run by David Brasch in Queensland. For a small fee of $110, David does all the homework for you. You’re investing a lot of money when you breed a litter, so you don’t want to get it wrong, and David has a great success rate.” Knott said it was a case of all hands on deck with his greyhounds at home, with wife Sue preparing the feeds, son Cameron assisting with the cardio training of Especial Shiraz, and daughter Elise in charge of grooming and providing the all-important TLC. Talking Breeding Stunning litter
Talking Breeding with Roger Clark
GLEN PASK has a nice litter of pups on the list this week, by Melbourne Cup winner, Black Magic Opal (May 2011 Magic Sprite x Awesome Opal). Registered for the “Four Frothys” Syndicate, the three dogs and five bitches are from the beautifully bred, outstanding producer, Absolute Stunna (October 2010 Bombastic Shiraz x Regal Blaze), whose dam is by Pure Octane x Sound Lee (Brett Lee x Sound The Alarm). She is from a litter of six named, who all won, including Pretty Peggy Sue and Striking Blaze, who won eleven races each. Lightly raced, she only had 11 starts, for three wins and five placings, winning twice over 460 metres at Warragul (26.15) and also over 520 metres at Cranbourne (31.00). She already has great success as a brood bitch, an outstanding first litter, whelped in November 2013, by Kinloch Brae*, which produced Absolute Beaut, Absolute Silence, Bells Are Ringin, Blazin’ Bomber, Kinloch Stunna, Miss Kadia, Ring The Bell and Stunning Success. Her second litter, whelped in December 2015, by Ballymac Vic*, produced Absolute Breeze, Blazin About, Disclaimer, Edge Of Town and Lightning Crash. She also has a litter of second litter on file, by Kinloch Brae*, which produced eight dogs and three bitches, whelped in December 2016.

THIS week’s review of litters from the Victorian Litter Registrations list for the week ending 21 March, starts with a nice litter of eight pups, by under-rated sire, Allen Deed (December 2011 Jarvis Bale x Greta Bale). Registered by Lillicur breeder, Helena Boehmke, the three dogs and five bitches are from the beautifully bred, unraced bitch, Night Dream (May 2014 Collision x Dream Rattler), whose dam is by Bombastic Shiraz x Greys Lemon Ice* (Gable Dodge x Greys Freeflight). She is from a litter of six named, which produced four winners from the five who raced, including Dream Of Speed and Groovy Tiger, who both won ten races each. She has two named offspring on file from her first litter, of five dogs and one bitch, whelped in March 2016, by Banjo Boy. Whelped a litter recently? Why not send us a pic? and tell us about it.
On the Double NHILL breeder, Andrea Gurry has a litter of six pups on the list this week by highly rated stud prospect, Dyna Double One (March 2013 Barcia Bale x Crystin Bale). The two dogs and four bitches in the litter are from the well bred, Cranbourne 311 metres specialist, Tactical Miss (August 2013 August 2013 Dyna Lachlan x Kirabilli Darcy), whose dam is by Bombastic Shiraz x Kirabilli Tiger (Nobody’s Fool x Hondo Mandy). She is from a handy litter of seven named, with six winners, from which she was the standout, with her 59 starts resulting in 15 wins and 17 placings. Pups for Sale Outstanding opportunity to purchase a pup from a Group producing bitch with impeccable bloodlines 3 dogs and 2 bitches
Sire: Allen Deed December 2011 Jarvis Bale x Greta Bale Dam Love To Rock March 2012 Turanza Bale x Flamenco (Litter sister to freak sprinter now stud success, My Bro Fabio) Only 2 dogs and 2 bitches available for sale from litter of 9. Allen Deed was an absolute flying machine that holds the current track record of an unbelievable 29.37 at the Meadows. Allen Deed’s dam line is impeccable! His dam, Greta Bale, is by the amazing Gold Rush Bale, who also produced stud dogs Bartrim Bale, Dyna Tron, Dyna Steal and not to mention Princess Bale who has thrown the number one sire at the moment in Barcia Bale. This makes Greta Bale half-sister to these superstars and amazing producing dogs. His first progeny have commenced racing and most of them are already setting tracks alight: Dyna Forrest (20:7-3-2) most notably a finalist in the 2018 Australia Cup, he’s also had a 29.51 win at Sandown, Dyna Eroll (10:4-0-2) including a flying 25.58 at Geelong and It’s a Bull (5:3-0-0). If his first two litters are any indication of his success at stud, then we are sure to see a lot more of him in the future. Love to Rock is bred in the purple, she is out of Turanza Bale and her dam Flamenco is litter sister to the mighty Mogambo. She is also full sister to up and coming super sire MY BRO FABIO!!! To add to this remarkable CV, she has also thrown gun chaser Matt Machine (47:17-6-8) having amassed nearly $90k in prize money and winning 6 in BON! Including a slick 29.34 at Sandown and has broken 30 secs at the Meadows twice running 29.84 and 29.79. Her first litter to SH Avatar, that produced Matt Machine and Exs and Ohs was an outcross mating. As seen with her brother My Bro Fabio, he has clicked well when mated to an outcross. She has also thrown, Exs and Ohs (30:8-7-4) who has won almost $40k in prize money! She too running very slick times including a 34.21 at Sandown over the 595m and breaking the 30secs at Meadows in 29.95 If you are after a strong and powerful line, these pups certainly have it! This is a rare opportunity to tap into these amazing lines and get yourself a potential group dog. Considering all these facts, these pups stand at amazing value. Young superstar Tritt Tritt (17:11-2-1) including 6 BON! His best times of 34.07 @ Sandown, 34.45 @ Meadows and a flying 27.97 over the 545m at Bendigo. His best is yet to come!! Trumpsta (4:2-1-0). Pups for Sale Beautifully bred litter for sale 3 dogs and 5 bitches offered for sale. All pups are black with different white markings.
Sire: Banjo Boy April 2011 Vee Man Vane x Off Springer Dam:Houso Delight April 2013 El Grand Senor x Tenterfield Lil (Gable Lafourche* x Paw Nomaw Banjo Boy is producing up and coming stars and one that throws strength into his litters through the mighty Flying Penske*. This is Houso Delight's second litter. Her first litter to Fabregas are currently at the breakers with good reports coming back! This mating was chosen due to the close line breeding with superstars Big Flood, Brueghelino, Petadale etc. When Banjo boy was mated to Easy Baby, it produced Big Flood, Brughelino and Petadale, not to mention the rest of this successful, group producing litter. Easy Baby, a bitch out of the mighty El Grand Senor, has given these greyhounds great early speed and stamina to produce quality dogs that are quick early but can stay all day! Houso Delight, also a bitch by El Grand Senor is an exact replica of these traits! Making these superb pups ¾ in blood to Big Flood, Brughelino, Petadale etc. With El Grand Senor and Vee Man Vane prominent in the breeding, this is a recipe for explosive early speed! And as stated previously, Banjo Boy, having Offspringer as his dam, introduces the strength we have come to see through Group 1 champions Echelon, Granduer and Sweet It Is! Offspringer, when mated to Where’s Pedro's superstar son Mogambo produced such ultimate staying qualities and as El Grand Senor is also out of the mighty Where’s Pedro, we believe this mating with replicate those staying qualities! And it is for this reason that we believe these pups should have huge success on the race track.
Dogs $3000 Bitches $2500 These pups will not disappoint! Get in quick! At these prices, these pups will not last. To purchase or for more information, contact: Luke 0433250511 or Matt 0422490106

NSW Metropolitan Sires List NSW Metropolitan Sires List
January-March 2018
BARCIA BALE held on to top position on the list after three months racing at Wentworth Park, but only just. Fernando Bale is closing in fast, after his offspring won 13 races in March, to take him four wins closer to Barcia Bale and just one win off the lead, to give him top position in both NSW and Victoria. As you saw last week he now leads the Victorian list, with 92 wins at the end of March, compared with Barcia Bale’s 73. The interesting thing in NSW is that third placed Fabregas is only eight wins behind the Fernando Bale, whereas in Victoria, third placed Bella Infrared* is 67 wins behind. Victoria has four metropolitan meetings a week to two in NSW, so the figures are double when comparing.

by Andrew Copley Angela Langton says a lack of selfbelief may be preventing some greyhound breeders from reaching their potential.
Langton and her mother Sue Smith have achieved extraordinary success as breeders, winning numerous group races with greyhounds they’ve bred including Que Sera Sera, Auf Weidersehen, Lynlea’s King, For more information please contact: Come On Lleyton, Wizard’s Chess and Yowyeh. GCA Publicity Officer “I’m very passionate about breeding. I want to win Neil Brown group races and I’ve got enormous drive to be the best Tel: 03 97691234 Mob: 0423 129 950 breeder I can be, and I think some breeders need to aim higher and believe in themselves a bit more,” she said. The Anakie breeder trainer said consistently achieving success as a breeder starts from before a mating even occurs. “I believe you have to be very selective with the greyhounds you choose to breed with. I like to breed with hard-chasing dams who can run 500 metres or further,” she said. Langton said that a lot of pups are kept in cotton wool and don’t get enough exercise, particularly during the rearing phase. “I believe you need to feed the best you can and give Neil Brown was appointed as Publicity Officer your pups plenty of handling and plenty of galloping. I for the Australian Greyhound Racing believe that some people are too scared to let their pups run too much, but that’s how they learn to run and learn Association in September 2005. He “Some people never actually try to step their dogs up to produces a detailed Press Release of every 500 metres because they just don’t see themselves as Group 1 and 2 Final, as well as a preview/ metropolitan trainers, but it’s silly to think like that. by Rob Britton at Lara in Victoria. Rippin’ Sam is by Fernando Bale from Tears Siam (Bekim Bale x Tonto Tears). His record is 21 starts for eight wins and eight placings and prizemoney earnings of $85,875. As usual there were some outstanding runs recorded in March on various tracks around Australia. However, given the way in which Rippin’ Sam went about his win, he got the nod as the Run of the Month. GCA congratulates owner Loren Harborne, trainer Rob Britton and Rippin’ Sam after being judged the GCA Run of the Month for March 2018. He joins the previous winners Riveting, Extreme Magic (2), Riley Tokaam, Rockoon, Thirty Talks, Billy’s Bake and On and Off making up all the winners in 20172018.

Rippin’ Sam winning his heat of the Association Cup at Wentworth Park (Pic Greyhound Recorder)
The GCA Run of the Month for March 2018 has been awarded to Victorian up and coming stayer Rippin’ Sam for his win in a heat of the Association Cup at Wentworth Park on 24 March. Rippin’ Sam ($2.10) made an ultra-impressive Wentworth Park debut with a barnstorming 42.25 victory in the second run-off, defeating fellow Victorian Tritt Tritt by four lengths, his eighth win from 21 starts and seventh from his last 11. He was nowhere to be seen early and still gave the leaders a monster of a start off the back, he stood them up 10 to 12 lengths at some stages of the heat, however once he knuckled down to the task at hand he stormed home in devastating fashion in what was an extraordinary performance. “We gave Rippin’ Sam a slip around Wentworth Park the week before and I thought he felt his way early in his heat but once he knew where he was he really let go,” Britton said. “Early days he was always last early but he’s jumping a bit better now. Britton had won the Association Cup with Rippin Sam’s uncle Space Star, and he was hoping to repeat the dose with Rippin' Sam but it wasn't to be. A long way out of his ground early he got home hard at the finish to wind up second behind Scott Keeping who was a little unlucky to not score the run of the month for his performance in the final, it was an outstanding run also. Rippin’ Sam is a White & Brindle dog whelped February '16, he is raced by Loren Harborne & trained - 25 -

Great Greyhound industry achievers Pat Haas Category: Trainer NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS: Metro Ladies Trainers Premiership 1973 (inaugural) Metro Trainers Premierships (1974, 1977, 1978, 1980, 1981) Metro Owners Premierships (1976, 1977, 1980, 1981) 1977 Maturity Classic 1977 Queesland Futurity Committee MGRA 1980 1980 Olympic Park Sprint Championship 1981 Moomba Trophy 1981 Lord Mayors Trophy
Pat Haas was a trailblazer for women in greyhound racing, perhaps more than anyone else in the history of the sport. Introduced to greyhound racing in Queensland in the 1950s - Pat would often wag school with her brother and a friend so she could frequent the greyhound races at Beenleigh - where she met and later married top Victorian trainer Carl Haas Snr who would travel the country in search of winning races. Carl taught Pat plenty about training greyhounds, and together they were a formidable team, firstly on a five acre property in Berwick, and later, once their kennel grew significantly in size, on 42 acres in the Gippsland town of Tynong.
However, in the 1960s, when Carl decided to pursue another passion of his - bookmaking, which he did across at all metropolitan meetings across the three racing codes - Pat came into her own as a trainer, despite being faced with many challenges relating to equal opportunity. As a trainer and later as an administrator, Pat broke down many barriers in her quest for equalisation during an era where greyhound racing was almost completely male-dominated, and sexual discrimination was part of the norm. Greyhound racing in Victoria traces back to the 1890s, however women weren’t allowed to train greyhounds in this state until the early 1960s, and even then they could only train dogs that they owned. And it wasn’t until the 1970s that women were first allowed to handle greyhounds at the racetrack. Today, a great percentage of greyhound racing participants are female, thanks largely to the innovation and determination of one Pat Haas.

GRV News GAP Café Most of them also have to adjust from being based in rural and regional Victoria to suddenly living in metropolitan areas. This café will make it easier for people to come into contact with our greyhounds,” Mr Clayton said. The café has both an indoor and outdoor area for dogs and their owners and will be serving criticallyacclaimed Campos roaster coffee sure to appeal to any coffee-loving Melburnian. It is the latest initiative from GRV to focus on encouraging greyhound adoption. With a record 1314 greyhounds adopted through its Greyhound Adoption Program in the 2016/17 financial year, GRV’s focus has been on ensuring the best possible life for greyhounds before, during and after their racing careers. “We have seen record numbers of greyhound adoptions in the past two years and word is getting out about the appeal of these beautiful dogs as pets,” Mr Clayton said. “There is a real community of greyhound owners and the GAP café is a great meeting place for this community as well as other dog owners.” The Victorian Government has provided almost $133,000 towards the cafe through the Victorian Racing Industry Fund, which is sourced from unclaimed wagering dividends and on-course wagering taxes. GRV has also committed $133,000 towards the animal welfare initiative. The new GAP Cafe is located at 477 King Street, West Melbourne, and is open from 7am–3pm Monday to Friday and 8am–3pm on weekends.
