THIS week’s review of litters selected from the long list of litters registered with GRV during the week ending 9 May, starts with a nice litter of eight pups by the under-rated sire, Allen Deed (December 2011 Jarvis Bale x Greta Bale). Registered by astute, Wattle Flat breeder, Geoff Collins, the four dogs and four bitches are from the beautifully bred bitch, Kasreyn (October 2013 Barcia Bale x Chasin The Dream*), whose imported dam is by Lonesome Cry x Dreamy Blossom (Maryville Rumble x Valoris). She is a litter sister to the outstanding sprinter, Cutting Edge, who we featured in last week’s reviews. On the track she raced 29 times, for six wins and four placings, winning four times over 450 metres at Shepparton (25.35) and also over 525 metres (30.06) and 600 metres (34.71) at The Meadows.

Arby litter COLDSTREAM breeder, Colin Dalton has a nice litter of eleven pups on the list this week, by the very well bred, lightly used stud prospect, Arby (July 2013 Magic Sprite x Cyclone Babe), whose dam is by Typhoon Tide x Gene Vale (Cry Havoc x Hanson Avid). The four dogs and seven bitches, are from the well bred bitch, Bit Chili Bille (September 2011 Bit Chili x Billie Gene), whose dam is by Solve The Puzzle x Gene Vale (Cry Havoc x Hanson Avid). She is from a litter of five named, with only two racing, her and Weowna Zumba, 36-3-5-0. Her 36 starts, resulted in three wins and 13 placings, with wins over 400 metres at Warragul (22.47), 350 metres at Healesville (19.39), 311 metres at Cranbourne (17.81), 513 metres at Traralgon (29.77), 450 metres at Shepparton (25.66), 515 metres at Sandown (30.10), 410 metres at Horsham (23.26) and 440 metres at Sale (25.11). She has a three named offspring on file, Affair Of State, Dangerzone and Medicine Bow, who were whelped in February 2015, by Spring Gun. Colin also has a litter of the list this week, by Stagger, which we will review with the other Stagger litters, at the end of this week’s reviews.

Talking Breeding - Victoria from the well bred bitch, Kurzke (August 2011 Andy Palmer x Honey Smack), whose dam is by Kings Cadet* x Psycho Analysis (Irish Analysis* x Cartland). Seven Barcia Bale litters She was the standout in her litter of six named, THIS week’s list is dominated by leading national sire, which produced two other winners, Lily Black, 63-6-6-8 Barcia Bale (March 2010 Go Wild Teddy x Princess and Rock On Corey, 6-1-3-0. Bale), who has seven litters. Her record shows she raced 57 times, for eight Looking his litters, briefly, Heathcote breeder, wins and 15 placings, winning three times over 500 Barry Anderson has the first two litters. metres at Bendigo (28.30), where she also won twice First up is a litter of three dogs and three bitches, over 660 metres (37.95), with single wins over 600 from the well bred bitch, Barelen Norris (February 2010 metres at The Meadows (35.26) and 513 metres at Knocka Norris x Barelen Queen), who raced 38 times, Traralgon (30.29), where she also won over 658 metres for nine wins and ten placings. The Kinloch* litters THREE litters on the NSW list this week, by international stud success, Kinloch Brae* (August 2005 Craigie Mo Town x Greys Free Style).

Totals 108 89 27 litters (Av 7.3)

Popular sires dominating MORE than half the litters on this week’s NSW list, which has 27 litters, from 14 different sires, were sired by five individual sires, Barcia Bale, 4, Dyna Double One, 3, Fernando Bale, 3, Kinloch Brae*, 3 and My Bro Fabio, 3. As with all of our reviews, the usual criteria for selection is how many pups are in the litter, and whether or not we consider some will be for sale at three months, which is about the time the reviews are done. There are other factors and we do our best to give all sires a fair go, but with the most popular sires domination selection by breeders it is obvious there is going to be more of their pups around.

Sarina breeder, Wayne Scott has the first of the three litters, which has dour dogs and four bitches, from the well bred bitch, Farmor Eye Am (October 2012 Cosmic Rumble x Farmor Swift), whose dam is by Collide x Zippy Xena (Bobniak x Flying Amy). She is from a litter of eight named, with seven racing, but overall they didn’t do a lot of racing, but she was supported by five winners, Booze Cruise, 5-1-1-0, Farmor Antique, 8-1-2-0, Narley Marley, 11-1-1-1, Our Money Maker, 19-1-4-4 and Time Is Money, 31-5-4-4. She raced 29 times, for the handy return of five wins and 12 placings, winning over 520 metres at Albion Park (30.17), 431 metres at Ipswich (25.14) and 515 metres at Sandown (29.98). Thirteen pups in the second, Kinloch Brae litter, ten dogs and three bitches, from the well bred bitch, Push It (March 2012 Collision x Low Gee Eye), whose dam is by Bombastic Shiraz x Fool’s State (Elle’s Commando x Spark Again). She is from a litter of five named, from which only two raced, including Joke’s On You, 27-2-4-3. Her record shows she raced 39 times, for 11 wins and 15 placings, winning six times over 520 metres at Wentworth Park (29.70), three times over 515 metres at Gosford (30.01) and also over 515 metres at The Gardens (29.82) and 520 metres at Dapto (30.02).

Owner sets the bar in true tale of courage A fairytale comeback added to a magnificent night of racing at Sandown Park last Thursday when Shima Bar won his first city race since returning from a major injury setback.

While Tornado Tears won the battle of the best stayers in the land in the world’s richest staying race, the RSN Sandown Cup (one of the three Group 1s on the night), Shima Bar’s victory later in the evening, in the RSN Breakfast Club Grade 5 Stake, carried as much emotion as perhaps any race conducted on Victorian soil this year. Bred in the Gippsland town of Koo Wee Rup by Bob Cummings and owned by the Cummings Gleeson Syndicate, Shima Bar had the world at his feet in the early part of 2017 when injury struck. He won 10 of his first 16 starts for trainer Andrea Dailly, including the Group 1 Paws Of Thunder in Sydney, before breaking his front left leg. “It was a clean break…the bone snapped in half,” part-owner David Gleeson recalled. “As a result, it took him five months before he could even put his foot to the ground. I had doubts about whether he’d ever make it back to the track, but regardless, the health and welfare of Shima Bar were always the number one priority. He’s so courageous.” Gleeson played a huge role in Shima Bar’s return, bringing the greyhound into his home during his recovery. “We got him back (racing) under the careful care of Des Fegan, a vet from Cranbourne. Des was confident we could get him back to the track. Following an x-ray, Des operated on him the morning after his injury, and once he had the screws and the plate removed, we were having him x-rayed every two weeks to see how the bones were knitting together.” “I was swimming him at a heated pool at a vet in Narre Warren, which included putting floatation devices on him so he wouldn’t sink. The swimming helped him realise that he still had a leg there, because when the nerves are cut the message to the brain tells them that the leg doesn’t exist.

I was also doing physiotherapy with him three times a day, including stretches, as well as walking him around the local golf course,” Gleeson said. Shima Bar is now three starts into his return to the racetrack after almost 14 months on the sidelines. Upon return, he ran third and first at Geelong before his sensational come-from-behind win on Sandown Cup night in 29.90sec. And Gleeson hasn’t given up hope of a return to the group racing circuit. “Thursday night was the first time he has been around Sandown since November 4, 2016, which makes his performance even more special. He’s got no flexion in his left wrist compared to his right wrist, but he trialled around Ballarat the week before he went to Sandown, just after they’d ploughed up the track, and the time he ran was quite incredible. He quite easily could (compete at group level again) because he’s got attitude. He wants to go,” Gleeson said. Shima Bar, a son of Barcia Bale and Shimaguni, was registered as a sire during his recovery, and he now has eight litters on the ground. He also has 12 wins from 20 starts to his name and more than $126,000 in prize money. He will return to Sandown tonight, where he’ll line up in a Grade 4 event (Race 6, Box 2 at 7.43pm). Gleeson, a Director at the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club, said he felt indebted to the Dailly team and Fegan for their role in Shima Bar’s return, while Cummings and Gleeson should also be commended for financing the recovery. The biggest take-out from Shima Bar’s injury, however, might just be Gleeson’s efforts in bringing the greyhound into his home during his time of need. It sets a wonderful example to all greyhound owners that patience, persistence and a willingness to be hands-on can reap enormous rewards. Andrew Copley

SA Coursing Results Results from the Virginia Coursing meeting in South Alstralia, on Sunday 20 May, which arrived too late for publication last week. BACK TO 8-DOG RACING With the return to 8-dog events, the Club was pleasantly surprised to receive good nominations for our meeting. Some keen courses were witnessed with a few surprises – Wally Harkins took out the first event with Phil’s Green, a greyhound who obviously relishes the straight track with only one other competitor when he defeated Ray Fewings’ Paua to Kapau. It was good to see Barb Cahill return to coursing with a winner when Any Hoo just defeated Kathleen Johnstone’s Black Antico; Steve Brookes produced Just Did It to defeat Nino Gambardella’s Zulu General. Gavin Bright’s Stalking Storm defeated Norm Smith’s Cinnamon Rose in 15.52 and Neil Mann’s Canya Max defeated Stuart Ellis’ Rhynstone Teddy. Ray Fewings Castle Rock repeated his circle form when defeating Tina Cattermole’s Ricala and the final event of the day was taken out by Kath Johnstone’s Mulga Jack when he defeated Richard Pearce’s Senorita Chloe.

RACE 4 : GOTBA MAIDEN STAKE Gavin Bright’s STALKING STORM (R BD D, Dec ’15; Shifty Sticka/She Ain’t Late) defeated Norman Smith’s CINNAMON ROSE (BD B, Feb ’16; EJ’s Douglas/Eustace Diamond) by 1.5 lengths in 15.52. Winner trained by Steve Coates. RACE 5 : GOTBA MAIDEN STAKE Neil Mann’s CANYA MAX (B D, Aug ’15; Fernando Bale/Rinoa Bale) defeated S Ellis & P Green’s RHYNSTONE TEDDY(WH&B D Sep ’15; Paw Licking/Pearl’s Bonnie) by 1.5 lengths in 15.89. Winner trained by Neil Mann. RACE 6 : GOTBA JUVENILE STAKE Ray Fewings’ CASTLE ROCK (F D, Sep ’16; Barcia Bale/Sidney’s Shadow) defeated Tina Cattermole’s RICALA (B&W D, Nov ’16; Pure Octane/Hilltop Snow) by 3 lengths in 15.51. Winner trained by Ray Fewings. RACE 7 : GOTBA MAIDEN Kethleen Johnstone’s MULGA JACK (B D, Apr ’16; Dyna Double One/Latino Princess) defeated the Forty Plus Syndicate’s SENORITA CHLOE (B B, May ’16; El Grand Senor/Topaz Siyan) by 1 length in 16.00. Winner trained by Adam Manton.

Greyhounds in the home FOSTER A GREYHOUND: There are many greyhounds who need a little more assistance to help them settle into pet life They fall into two categories Greyhounds who are transitioning from the track and need help to pass their GAP assessment OR Those dogs who have been a marginal fail at their GAP assessment These dogs are just gorgeous happy greyhounds, the only difference is that need a little more help to transition into pet life The reality is that without foster carers some of these dogs are at risk If you would like to change the life of beautiful dog contact Rebecca and join her team ____________________________________________

PYALONG owner/trainer/breeder Richard Gray said farewell to one of his favourites this week, with the sad passing of his great sprinter, and recently proven sire, Athos (December 2011 Windy Millar* x Alanis Lane) whose dam is by Primo Uno x Daishi Bale

The magnificently conformed greyhound Athos, with the insert photo taken when he was just a pup Athos raced 95 times, for 15 wins, 14 seconds, 11 thirds And won from 425 to 600 metres His breeding is as close as you can get to Turanza Bale on the dam side. He has two named offspring on file from his only litter registered to date, Cobber Victorem, 13-3-3-1 and Rocky Victorem, 3-1-0-0, who were both whelped in January 2016, by Zoenah’s Entity.
