R.I.P Keith Warburton Blues wore black armbands last weekend for former star player and greyhound trainer. Veteran greyhound trainer and legendary former Carlton footballer, Keith Warburton passed away last week at age 89. Warburton, of Tatura, is a sporting icon, and was recognised by the Shepparton Greyhound Racing Club in 2013 for his outstanding contribution to greyhound racing. “Keith gave so much to greyhound racing and no one ever had a bad word to say about him,” said Shepparton GRV Manager, Carl McGrath. “He was a very good trainer and his greyhounds raced under the ‘Tat’ prefix, while he was also a highly respected ‘muscle man’. He was the kind of guy that if he checked over your dogs and knew you were short of money he wouldn’t charge you. He was the George Schofield of provincial greyhound racing.” In footy circles Warburton was known as ‘The Acrobat’, with his short but spectacular career as a high -flying forward with Carlton ending at age 26 with 74 games and 91 goals to his name. A hugely popular footballer, Warburton made front page news when doctors feared for his life following a match in 1952 in which he received an accidental elbow which led to a ruptured bowel and burst intestine. This led to countless people donating blood in a bid to help Warburton. Prince Henry’s Hospital, where he was admitted, received phone calls at a rate of eight per minute from concerned fans, while hundreds of Melbournians waited around the clock by their radios for updates on Warburton’s health. He returned to the field for the beginning of the 1953 season, albeit wearing a big belt as a safeguard. Keith represented Victoria in lawn bowls, and just last month was inducted into the Goulburn Valley Football League’s Hall of Fame.

A resident of the Moyola Gardens Retirement Village, Warburton died there on Wednesday morning after a short illness, surrounded by family members. The Carlton Football Club website reports that Carlton’s senior players, including Kade Simpson in game No.300 included, wore black armbands in last Saturday’s match with Port Adelaide as a mark of respect to Warburton, whose funeral took place at the Tatura Bowls Club on Monday, July 2. Keith’s beloved wife of 65 years, Rose, died 12 months ago. They are survived by daughter Lizzie, son Peter (himself a four-game Carlton senior player through 1971 and ’72), Susan, David and Tracey, together with 14 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. David Warburton, also from Tatura, followed his father into training greyhounds. Speaking for his family, Peter offered a fascinating insight into Keith Warburton the man. “To the day he died, I never ever heard Dad swear, never saw him intoxicated, never saw him raise his hands to anybody within or outside the family, or raise his voice in anger,” Peter told carltonfc.com.au. PUPS FOR SALE Beautifully bred pups for sale DYNA DOUBLE ONE March 2013 Barcia Bale x Crystin Bale

X

MOLTISANTI August 2014 Magic Sprite x Golden Goal (Collision x Okay Supreme)

Melbourne Cup winner DYNA DOUBLE ONE is Barcia Bale’s most successful son winning 4 Group 1’s and over $1m in prize money breaking 3 track records in the process.

Moltisanti (Magic Sprite x Golden Goal) was a brilliant beginner with a 5.02 first section split at Sandown in her first start. Her early brilliance put her in every race and she ended her career with a 67: 15-13-10 record and $30,000 in prize money. Victories at Bendigo (23.98); Warrnambool (22.30); Traralgon (22.88); Sale (24.98); Ballarat (22.13); Shepparton (22.06) & Geelong (22.38) demonstrate her versatility.

This damline keeps on producing consistent winners generation after generation. Her dam, Golden Goal 40: 7-6-8 (Collision x Okay Supreme) is from a litter that produced Fully Advanced ($169,520); Joshua ($45,915); Just Tripping ($63,295) and Thommo's Pizazz ($33,540)

We sent her to Dyna Double One to inject the strength and toughness to complement her brilliance. The Barcia Bale cross with Magic Sprite has produced mutliple Group 1 winning dogs like Fast Times. Exciting youngster Double Que in the powerful Seona Thompson kennel is also a son of Dyna Double One with the Magic Sprite cross.

Dog Philosophy Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I’d never heard a more comforting explanation. It has changed the way I try and live. He said, ”People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life — like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?” The six-year-old continued, ”Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don’t have to stay for as long as we do.” Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly.

Dog Philosophy WHY DOGS LIVE LESS THAN HUMAN

Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like: • When your loved ones come home, always run to greet them. • Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride. • Allow the experience of fresh air and the Here's the surprising answer of a 6 year old child. wind in your face to be pure Ecstasy. • Take naps. Being a veterinarian, I had been called to • Stretch before rising. examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named • Run, romp, and play daily. Belker. The dog’s owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and • Thrive on attention and let people touch their little boy Shane, were all very attached to you. Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle. I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn’t do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home. As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience. The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker‘s family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away. The little boy seemed to accept Belker’s transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker’s Death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that dogs' lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, ”I know why.”

• Avoid biting when a simple growl will do. • On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass. • On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree. • When you’re happy, dance around and wag your entire body.

Copley’s Corner Blazer wins in record fashion

Star stayer calls it a day

Andrew Copley Victorian bred stayer Ring The Bell has now been retired after contesting the Group 1 New Zealand Stayers Cup (732m) in Christchurch on Friday, in which he ran fifth.

Mepunga Blazer Victorian sprinter Mepunga Blazer has exceeded all expectations upon his recent return from retirement and is set to start a short-priced favourite in tonight’s Group 1 Winter Cup (520m) in Brisbane after winning his heat in track record time. After spending six months in retirement at stud with an injured triangle muscle, Mepunga Blazer won on return at Sandown Park on July 21 in a Best of Night 29.39sec. Then, last Thursday he stepped out at Albion Park and won by 10 lengths in 29.41sec, 1.5 lengths faster than previous track record time which was held by Dyna Double One. “I trialled Mepunga Blazer at Albion Park a couple of weeks ago and the experience did him the world of good because he was far more settled travelling up there this time around. He understood that he was getting on a plane to go and race somewhere, which really helped him relax. I expected him to go well, but when he ran the time he did I couldn’t believe it,” trainer Jeff Britton said. Britton has a second finalist in the Winter Cup, the classy Hasten Slowly, who clocked a time of 29.89sec when winning his heat. “Hasten Slowly is going really well. He has travelled interstate a few times now and we are really starting to see the best of him,” he said. A third Victorian greyhound, Not Available, whom trainer Robert Britton (Jeff’s brother) has temporarily left in the care of local trainer Steven Scott, also won his way into tonight’s $100,000 tothe-winner final in the time of 29.65sec, four lengths inferior to Mepunga Blazer.

Ring The Bell He retires with 37 wins and 27 placings from 91 starts, while he earned $440,824 throughout his career. His record in NZ was exemplary, winning 19 from 27, and last month he became the first greyhound to win the prestigious Group 1 Silver Collar (779m) twice. The Silver Collar is regarded as NZ’s premier greyhound race, and next year local greyhound enthusiast Jenny Bartlett, who has decided to adopt Ring The Bell as a pet, has organised for him to lead out 2019 Silver Collar field. Greyhounds in the home these athletes that EVERYTHING from day one goes 100% in each dogs favour to give them every chance of achieving what they were ultimately bred for. Yes, he might race the vets said 'might' being the word. Each time I spoke to someone who had the same issue each time I was met with 'yes they raced, but...' after speaking with a fair few people I thought OK, he becomes a race dog but at what cost? He may never race but gone through all the steps of becoming a racer only to then have to be rehomed/retrained, this isn't http://www.facebook.com/groups/144096608971567/ what I wanted for T-bone. This morning I made a phone call to GAP just to enquire, after a few questions they said good news we're at Sandown this morning, I feel the need to post something. Carly Feltham Palmer take him down. I was only enquiring, and not yet ready to let him go. So the kids and I jumped in the car, took him to Sandown where they ohhh'd and ahhhh'D over how cute he was. We waited with the van until virtually they were ready to leave, and then said goodbye to him.

I suppose what I'm trying to say is this was an extremely hard decision, but I did what I felt was the right thing by the dog. So it's not all about money. And trust me when I say I am not the only one who makes a decision like this on a regular basis, the dog before money. If anyone gets a little boy from GAP currently called T-bone, I'd love to be updated on his progress if you don't mind. He is beautiful natured, even though he was one of the littlest in the litter he still stood his ground with his 8 siblings, and he has quite the personality. Anyway signing off after a slightly emotional day. Here is a picture of little T. ___________________________________ Oh the love....... Wendy Argent

I'm a greyhound trainer, relatively new to the industry (about 3-4 years young). We've bred now 3 litters and have been lucky to date that nothing overly terrible has occurred and therefore all puppies have gone on to be race dogs that have been under my care. About two weeks ago we got some news that it wasn't little T-bone job in life to be a race dog. I had in this time weighed up whether we wait and see whether this changed, or do we decide to put him up for adoption... In my opinion it's imperative for what is required of - 28 -
