This decision has caused widespread discussion on social media and greyhound forum sites. Victorian Greyhound Weekly would like to hear your thoughts on the trial, whether you think it will result in less interference in races. What about NTD in all races? We are already seeing a lot of examples of five and six dog fields in Victoria as the shortage of greyhounds in this state and NSW takes it’s toll. Why not les us know what you think? editor@victoriangreyhoundweekly.com.au Victorian Greyhound Weekly is edited and published by Roger J Clark, for Azpak Marketing PO Box 184, Grantville Vic, 3984. Breeding: SIRE: Tivoli Chief DAM: Temora Lee Whelped : 01/03/1972 Trainer : Frank Cray / STUDMASTER – Tony Marino Owners : Ray Hocken Career Race Record : 37 starts, 25 wins, 3 placings Career Prizemoney : $26,000 NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENT: Winner Victorian Sires’ Premiership 1978-1982 The immortal Temlee will always be remeber for the amazing influence he had on the Australain greyhound breeding industry. Interestingly enough Temlee battled life-threatening illness as a pup and may not have survived only for the diligent care of his trainer Frank Cray, a Sale railway worker. Bred in 1972 by Barry Bailey, a former Sale Greyhound Racing Club president, Temlee was purchased for $135 as a two-month-old pup by Ray Hocken, who passed away in 2002. “Barry Bailey was a friend of Frank Cray and he suggested dad buy one of the pups,” said Hocken’s son, Rod of Leongatha. ”But Temlee contracted distemper and hepatitis, and Barry offered dad another pup. Fortunately he decided to stick with him and Frank nursed him back to health. ”Frank loved his greyhounds; he treated them like pets. Temlee spent most of his time inside Frank’s house; he was a very placid dog.” Temlee, who raced on 37 occasions for 25 wins, was the undisputed ‘King of Olympic Park’. He won 13 races from 19 starts on Swan Street’s No. 2 Oval - including the 1974 National Sprint Championship, 1974 Maturity and a 29.67sec track record in 1974, a mark that stood for 10 years. “We thought he was the greatest. He gave us a lot of thrills including my mum Bev, brother Greg and sister Kate,” Rod said. ”He was a mad railer, and was never defeated from box one. He was a bit tardy out of the boxes, but once he found his feet he had terrific acceleration. Dad owned the Maffra Hotel at the time, and many of the locals would congregate to watch him race.” In late November 1974, Temlee’s race career came to an abrupt halt when he cracked a bone in his left hind leg at Olympic Park. Consequently Temlee was retired to stud and stood at the home of his sire, Tivoli Chief, at Tony Marino’s Diamond Creek stud complex. ”He initially stood for a fee of $300 in 1975, which jumped to $1000 (a record at the time) within a year or so,” Rod said. “I tried to follow his progeny but lost track of them. But I remember some of the early ones – Satan’s Legend, Tempix, Tangaloa, Chief Dingaan, World Acclaim and Roy Trease.” Temlee won the Victorian Sires’ Premiership five times (1978-82) and sired 735 litters. Rod Hocken said Temlee’s induction into the Victorian greyhound racing Hall of Fame was “a great honour and just tops everything off”. http://www.grv.org.au/hall-of-fame/greyhounds/

Cranbourne Cup Cracker at Cranbourne Courtesy GRV Website
Lara trainer Anita Courts, 27, has cracked her first Country Cup win with her kennel star Crackerjack Choc in the $67,000 Backman’s Greyhound Supplies Cranbourne Cup (520m). Paying a staggering $26.00 for the win from box two, not even Anita gave her 32-kilo chaser much of a chance against a line-up that consisted of three Jason Thompson trained greyhounds. “I really didn’t think I would be standing here,” Anita said with tears of joy at the post-race presentation. “Jason Thompson had some amazing greyhounds in the field and to beat the likes of the Big Flood ($2.30 Favourite), who has to be one of the most exciting young greyhounds at the moment, is a credit to Crackjack Choc.” The son of Cosmic Rumble and Lizzie’s Memory utilized box two, staying within a couple of lengths behind the leading Archie Fields (box six) and Don’t Kid Me (box seven). Strength prevailed as Crackerjack Choc proved just how important it is to have a big motor over Cranbourne’s 520-metre journey. Crackerjack Choc eventually won by less than half a length over the Gerard O’Keeffe-trained Archie Fields ($41.70), with a further five lengths to the thirdplaced the Steven White-trained Don’t Kid Me ($15.70). The trio combined for a whopping trifecta dividend of $4,982.80, while the First 4, which also included the fourth-placed Jason Thompson-trained Sleek Master ($3.80), paid an unfathomable $18,199.20. “I can’t believe he held on.” Crackerjack Choc is now a winner of 14 races from 56 starts and he doubled his career earnings to $93,660 following his biggest win to date. “We only have a small team but we work hard and this is the greatest reward,” Anita said.
Although unlucky in the Cranbourne Cup, Jason Thompson had one reason to smile, that being a win by his exciting stayer, Burn One Down. Burn One Down took out the second feature on the night, the Victoria Cup which is held over the 699 metre distance, stopping the clock at 40.730sec.
