Greyhound Weekly Volume 1

Number 7

Greyhound racing at Sandown Park in Melbourne tonight features the running of the world’s richest greyhound race, the $420,000 to the winner TAB Melbourne Cup. According to the experts, it’s all over already with Shootout winner Zambora Brockie a $2.00 fixed odds favourite to win. Only two of the runners at $10.00 or better shows just how even the field is. Have a look at our history of the great race, starting on page 12.

From the Editor’s Desk Victorian Greyhound Weekly Edition 7 Friday November 8.

The Melbourne Cup MELBOURNE CUP 2016 is as good as run and won according to the experts, who with only a couple of excpetions expect Shootout winner Zambora Brockie to win, with a wide range of selections to fill the places. If he does everything right he should win, based on times he has a slender margin on Outside Pass, who hasn’t been done any favours by the box draw. If Zambora Brockie has any sort of luck in the first 200 metres, whoever leads could just be giving him something to chase and run down. I don’t know the answer, as I’ve said many times, I don’t pretend to be a great tipster or form analyst, preferring to concentrate on breeding. Forced to have a pick I would probably take the risk on Outside Pass getting across to lead and prove extremely hard for Zambora Brockie to run down, with Worm Burner and Ando’s Mac place chances. Last week I promised to tell you my favourite Melbourne Cup winner, so can now reveal it is 2003 winner Bombastic Shiraz. Bombastic Shiraz (March 2001 Black Shiraz x Bombastic Blonde) remains the only greyhound to win the Triple Crown, The Melbourne Cup, Sandown Shootout and the Topgun in 2003. He went on to a fantastic career at stud, producing the likes of Miata, Cindeen Shelby, Flashing Floods, Velocette, Bobby Boucheau, Snozz, Spud Regis, Lochinvar Marlow, Kiss Me Katut, Miss Slick, Bit Chili, Regal Thyme, Did I Entertain, Aston Galilee, Cintiarna, Bookkeeper, Godsend, Ima Geisha Girl, Alpe D’Huez, Aston Elle, Spring Gun, Nitro Burst, Tifi, Lord Ducal, Fabregas, Sure As, Nana Cook and many more. His name comes up so many times, every week, in our litter registration reviews, and will continue to do so for many years through the deeds of his long list of talented offspring.

Group 1 Bold Trease Preview.

UNLIKE the Group 1 Melbourne Cup final, the Bold Trease Final it a little more open and the winner looks even harder to find. The experts are divided in their opinion between It’s A Bird, Ramifications and Jaimandy Hatty. The interesting runner in the race is Caco Potion (December 2013 Kilty Lad x Shifty Mifty), whose dam is by Paddy’s Flame x Perfect Coctail (Big Daddy Cool x Cawbourne Smokey). He is from his dam’s only litter to date, which includes Kilty Conscience, Mendacious Lad, My Name’s Shultz, Shifty Joshua and Showgirl Miss, all handy short course sprinters, like their dam. Shifty Mifty raced 79 times for 11 wins and 26 placings, but 400 metres was as far as she was comfortable with. Kilty Lad has thrown a few middle distance and 700 metre plus winners, but the majority of his winners have been smart 515 to 525 metre winners, like the brilliant Kayda Shae, Kilty Express, Kiltah Magic, Crackerjack Max, and Crackerjack Burn. Caco Potion is the only greyhound in the kennel of his young trainer, Stefano Cassar, and to date he has raced 47 times for nine wins and 16 placings. His 42.19 heat win was only his second start over 715 metres, after striking plenty of trouble in his first start there over the distance on October 6, when sixth, beaten eight lengths, but he is sure to improve on last week’s run, and looks to have an outside chance in the race, appealing at the $15 on offer early in the week.

The Bold Trease Honour Roll

The Bold Trease is named after Australia’s greatest stayer ever. Bold Trease (March 1984 Roy Trease x Irish Temptress), whose dam was by the great Benjamin John x Court Rosie (Venetion Court x Karossie), who won four consecutive Sandown Cups from 1986 to 1989, a feat which is never likely to be achieved again. He was just an absolute freak stayer, the likes of which has not been since, maybe never will. Roger Clark

Continued

The late, great greyhound administrator Henry Harrison, with the 1978 Melbourne Cup. Henry Harrison’s greyhound racing passion dates back to the 1920s, initially as a typical punter and ownerbreeder. He witnessed his first Melbourne Cup, in the proprietary days of the sport, at Napier Park in 1927. When the race shifted to Sandown Park in 1956, with the introduction of the tin hare, Harrison was a powerful force in developing its status. Harrison was appointed to the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club committee in 1959 and elected chairman in 1964, a position he held for 23 years. His son-in-law Geoff Dawson (the incumbent SGRC chairman, who was elected following Harrison’s retirement from the club’s directorate in 1987) recalls the first time he met a giant among men – and set eyes on his daughter Loretta, who later became his wife. “I was a harness bookmaker’s runner at the Showgrounds in the early 1950s. I went around the back of the grandstand and Henry was there with his daughter Loretta. I thought ‘she’s not a bad sort’, so I kept going around the back to put some more bets on.”

Harrison’s greatest achievement, in Dawson’s opinion, was the negotiation of TAB coverage for greyhound racing through his powerful connections in the racing industry and with high ranking state politicians. “He was extremely convincing, and I don’t think the SGRC would be here today without his influence,” Dawson said. “He even purchased a thoroughbred from Sir Chester Manifold, just to speak to him about his main objective: getting the tote for the greyhounds.” Henry was a very fair and genuine person. He loved his family; he was a real honourable man,” Dawson said. Henry Harrison passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday September 18, 2005 - aged 91.
