Editors' Picks

It just wouldn't be right for our readers to have all the fun, so here's some of our all-time Silicon Valley favorites. Some things only get better with age, and after perusing our selections, we think you'll agree.

BEST... PUERTO AZUL, BY CHRIS SCHMAUCH

UNLISTED MENU ITEM: The Chris Combo

La Villa’s Delicatessen, 1319 Lincoln San Jose (408) 295-7851 www.wglavilla.com Few things can make you look as cool as walking into a restaurant with a friend, ordering something that isn’t on the menu and then watching the chef smile and begin preparing your dish, no questions asked. The next time you want to eat a sandwich that will keep you full for 12 hours, drop by La Villa and ask for a “Chris Combo.” What’s on a Chris Combo? Not even Chris will tell you, but take our word: It’s goooooood.

BEST PLACE TO...

MAKE OUT Capitol Drive-In

3630 Hillcap Ave., San Jose (408) 226-2251 www.centurytheaters.com We wanted to prove how cool we were by coming up with some really exotic, original place that you and your honey bunny could go for an extended smoochfest, like the roof of the HP Pavilion or the 280/880 connector ramp. But when it comes to lip lock, the drive-in remains the best place to suck face. Whether it’s the privacy afforded by fogged-up windows, or the subtle exhibitionist thrill of a public display of affection, San Jose’s six-screen landmark is an outdoor osculation oasis.

Mountain Winery

14831 Pierce Rd., Saratoga (408) 741-0763 www.mountainwinery.com We love the Mountain Winery’s intimate, outdoor concerts, but we love the spectacular view even more. Short of take-offs and landings at Mineta International, you’re not going to find a better elevated vantage point than the Valley-wide view from the grapevine-lined driveway of the former Paul Masson HQ. The gates open two hours before each performance so you can take in the gorgeous, nearly 360-degree panorama before show time. Show up early enough and you can top off the great music and gorgeous view with a romantic dinner.

Since Puerto Azul is open until 1:30am on Fridays and Saturdays, they’re also the perfect post-last call snack spot. Rotisserie meats, local seafood, organic produce, and artisan breads and cheeses make for a simple yet sophisticated menu. There’s just something about the seasoned grilled chicken at this unassuming cafe that makes us cry out in the middle of the night for a sweet-smelling poultry apparition named Rosalena. And apparently we’re not the only ones. During lunchtime, a line of faithful followers can be seen snaking out the door of Café Rosalena, as if they’re waiting to see an image of the Virgin Mary seared onto a decadent slice of chicken. Although Caesar Cardini is credited with creating the Caesar salad in the early 1920s, it’s Café Rosalena who is henceforth credited with making it the best in Silicon Valley. Wait a second. Cardini had a daughter named Rosa. They grew up in San Diego and Tijuana. What if Rosalena of Café Rosalena is the direct descendant of the original Caesar salad recipe? We doubt it. But that would probably help explain why it’s so flipping good. Rosalena!

HONORS: BEST MARTINI: Capers Eat & Drink About Us

caperseatanddrink.com

1710 W. Campbell, Campbell (408) 374-5777

Capers was born out of an idea. Kam Razavi, owner of Capers Eat and Drink, wanted a restaurant that had sports décor, but wasn’t just a sports bar. “I wanted a place where you’d feel comfortable bringing a date, your family or your friends.” So Razavi took the name from the little green flower bud that he loves, and Capers Eat and Drink was born.

Owner: Kam Razavi Hours: Mon-Wed 11am11:30pm, Thu-Sat 11am12:30am, Sun 9am-11:30pm, Sunday brunch 9am-1:30pm ; Happy Hour 3-6pm ; Banquet facility ; Private dining ; 2 for 1 martinis Mon - Tues

“Capers is a good neighborhood restaurant. On any given night, I know 85 percent of the patrons. It’s a local hangout; my own personal Cheers.” Upon winning the Honors Martini category, Razavi notes that the restaurant’s selection of martinis is wide, meaning that there’s something for everyone at Capers. Come experience Capers for yourself!

Since opening its doors in 1982, Taiwan Restaurant has made its mark as one of Silicon Valley’s best gourmet Chinese Restaurants featuring innovatively presented dishes using only the freshest ingredients. Owners Jimmy and Nancy Niu have dedicated themselves to providing their customers with warm and friendly service in a richly decorated setting. Jimmy continues to enhance the dining room with his creative tropical flower arrangements while wife Nancy displays her intricate oil paintings for all to enjoy. Taiwan Restaurant is proud to have received “Four Stars” from the Mercury News, “Best Chinese Restaurant in the Silicon Valley” from the Metro Newspaper, and “Best Asian Food” from the Willow Glen Resident. Even after many decades in the restaurant business, they continue to live by their motto:

“We would not serve anything to our customers that we would not serve to our family”. THEWAVEMAGAZINE.COM JUNE 17  JULY 11, 2010

About Us In 1992, father and son team Sam Carlino and Sam Jr. opened Sam’s Bar-B-Que on Bascom Avenue in San Jose. We adopt cooking styles from many regions across the country, including Kansas City-style ribs, Texas-style brisket, Carolina-style pork, and Southwestern chicken, along with smoked prime rib on Friday and Saturday nights.
