F YOU’RE a pet owner, you’re probably convinced yours is the cutest thing on four legs. Well, now is your chance to prove it. If you can get the little rascal to hold still and not rip off the costume for long enough to snap a picture, then you can enter your pal in our Halloween Costume Contest For All Pets. I feel it is only fair to warn you from the start that you’re in for a challenge: I’ll be torturing my hyperactive mutt Odin with a pirate costume, and I happen to know advertising manager Nick Vecchio has quite the get-up for his puggle Buddy. Send your photos to nick@thewcpress.com, and we’ll upload them to our Facebook page where the fans will decide just who has the most adorable four-legged friend. Voting begins on October 23, and we’ll announce the winner on Halloween. The winning pet gets their photo in the next issue of The WC, plus a host of pet-friendly prizes. You’ll have another chance to beat staff members of The WC in friendly competition if you make it out to the Chester County Art Association’s Annual Pumpkin Carve on October 25 from 5-8pm. It is a Mathers family tradition to get elbow-deep in pumpkin guts each October, so I have been honing my skills with a carving knife since before I was old enough to wield a steak knife at dinner. I plan on winning the free art class that’s up for grabs, but you can try your best to stop me. Your final chance to compete against this hard-working journalist will be Halloween weekend. I take my costumes very seriously, so you’ll catch me making rounds at all the local bars hoping to scoop up honors for best costume (and all the prizes that come along with it). We have a very thorough run-down of the weekend’s events on page 17, so you can plan your weekend accordingly. Last year I was beaten to Kildare’s $500 cash prize by a well-fashioned Kiss crew. This year, I don’t intend to come in second to anyone. Dan Mathers

Enduring The Tenth (Or Eleventh?) Crusade

W

Jill McDevitt's new book tells the tale of a society scared of their own impulses

HETHER you're a senator from North Carolina or an NBA shooting guard, controversy will follow you if you're associated with sex. Jill McDevitt didn't cheat on her cancer-ridden wife, but she did manage to cause a stir simply by opening a business in West Chester – the sex shop on Church Street named Feminique Boutique. She was demonized and beaten down, but now this degreed sexologist is speaking out in her new book, Fighting the Crusade Against Sex: Being Sex-Positive in a Sex-Negative World. We caught up with Jill to find out about her new book and to discover just what prompted her current course. You’ve studied sex, conducted seminars and now own a sex shop. Why have you committed your life to sex? I decided it was important to say that pleasure is good for you and sex is not shameful. I guess I’m trying to ask why sex is so important to you. As a kid I was completely uncomfortable with sex. When I was nine my mother was pregnant, and when she tried to tell me just the very basics of how it happened I covered my ears and squealed because I didn’t want to hear it. I became self-loathing as a sexual person. But then, at age 15, I was reading through some books in the Upper Darby High School library and realized I wasn’t the only one who felt this way. Why was it normal to feel horrible about something that was natural? I decided then that this was what I wanted to do with my life. Then what? I had a horrible experience with my boyfriend at the time. We'd been together a long time, but he wasn’t okay with it. Your sexual revolution was a problem for your high school boyfriend? Yes, because just as I was having this revelation, he had rediscovered religion and become a born-again Christian. He dumped me senior year because I wouldn’t pray with him. We’re still on good terms today, but it just didn’t work as a couple. Then you went on to school to study sex, right? Yes. I got my bachelor's degree in Sexuality, Marriage and Family at the University of Waterloo in Canada. You got your degree in Canada? Is your degree even considered legitimate here? [Laughs] Yes. Absolutely. Actually, a lot of people say that, but really Waterloo is like the Harvard of Canada. I also received a master's from Widener and am completing my PhD.

Jill McDevitt faced an onslaught of criticism after opening her shop Feminique Boutique on Church Street in West Chester. Her new book "Fighting The Crusade Against Sex" describes the controversy. And what did you do after college? For a short time I tried to find real work – do actual sex and family counseling or write for websites that did sex advice. But I always knew I wanted to have my own thing. However, my boyfriend at the time was really unsupportive. He had been a marketing major, so he kept telling me how little I knew about business, and how I had no business plan, and that I wouldn’t succeed. Then, after a couple of months of not finding a job (I graduated in 2007, right as the whole job market was about to crumble) I basically said, “Up yours, I’m doing this.” What exactly did you do? I started a company called Sex and Sensibility Seminars. I traveled around getting paid to talk about sex. That was back in 2007. Pretty soon I realized that I could make more money if I had things with me to sell after the show, and that quickly led to me opening this retail store in 2008. I understand that opening this store wasn’t exactly a smooth operation. Not at all. I encountered the same problems I had faced as an awkward teenager, except they were amplified. First, after the borough granted my business license, and even after the 30-day period allowed for appeals was up, a local church decided they wanted to appeal. At first the borough stood up for me. There was a town meeting and they basically said, “Look, she’s grandfathered in. All we can do now is make

sure that no other sex shops can open in West Chester in the future.” But then, they eventually said to me, “Sorry, we can’t defend you in this. If you want to fight them you’ll have to get lawyers and defend yourself,” even though the church had no legal right to challenge me. Then there was a conservative candidate running as a Republican for local office, and his whole platform was closing my shop. He wrote an editorial that a local paper picked up, and a media sensation ensued. I was on NBC, stuff was on the internet, in the papers, but I mostly kept my mouth shut and held back from saying a lot of things I wanted to. Eventually there was sort of a grassroots movement that gained footing defending me, through blogs and things, and I just let them do the talking. And now you’ve written a book about the experience? I have. It is my opportunity to say all the things I wanted to say at the time, all the things that were going on in my head. It also tells some of my back story, and I’m honestly a little nervous about people reading it because it has a lot of intimate details about my life. When’s the book out? Sunday, November 6 we’re having a launch party at the shop that starts at 2pm. There will be food and sales and signing and a brief reading. I think it will be a good day because we are expecting a lot of people.

Finding Treasure

T

Pickin’ through Chester County, by Tara Dugan

ECHNOLOGY is a wonderful thing. Even in my line of work, where I spend my days venerating the design of furniture and home accessories from the middle of last century, I recognize that it is, ironically, Silicon Valley that makes it possible for us to appreciate the goods from days gone by and places far away. The internet and data storage capabilities gobbled up Borders and threaten the shelves at the Chester County Library because they provide information faster and from better sources around the world. Case in point: a four-drawer table that didn’t speak English. I was perusing the furniture at Briggs Auction in Garnet Valley (about 25 minutes southeast of West Chester off Route 322) when I spotted a little Danish (or so I thought) modern table. It was small in scale, with four drawers and made of lovely teak. I was the successful bidder, so I brought the piece home and began my usual cleaning and research process. I soon

located a tag inside a drawer, completely intact, with lots of information. One slight problem, none of it was English. Now, I took as much high school French as anyone, but Mme Bergner could not have prepared me for this label, with its exotic punctuation and consonant blends I hadn’t seen since my childhood ABBA poster. Had to be Swedish. Google to the rescue! The dominant wording on the label read “Bra Bohag," which led me not to a manufacturer but rather to a funky little shop in Edinburgh, Scotland. Bra Bohag specializes in Mid-century Modern, so I ventured an email asking about my piece of the same name. Louice, the Swedish proprietor, responded quickly with a wealth of

information and references, which added up to tell the tale of the table. A Stockholm department store called Nordiska Kompaniet (like Harrod’s in London) commissioned high-end furniture and accessories from several companies from the '50s through the '70s. This design consortium includes well-known names such as Ljungs Industrier AB (later to become Dux, makers of the famous bed and cool window display on South 17th Street in Center City) and AB Svenska Mobelfabrikerna, as well as my own mystery label, AB Nybrofabriken Froeska. So, my piece had been made by that company under the Bra Bohag name for Nordiska Kompaniet in Stockholm sometime between the '50s and '70s. I also now know that this furniture is rarely found outside of Sweden, and I am lucky to have it here in Chester County. Unless you have a Scandinavian brotherin-law, where else could you get that kind of information so quickly but from your computer?

The Dating Column

I

Diane Stopyra’s enlightened take on dating from a woman’s perspective

’VE dated men who are younger than me, and men who are old enough to be my father. I am attracted to guys who are jerks and guys who are kind. I’ve fallen for men who have traveled the world and men who have never left Chester County. I’ve gone kite-surfing with an Australian, I’ve eaten crepes with a Frenchman, and I’ve learned to Dougie with some guy from North Philly. My celebrity crushes include Paul Walker, Sean Connery and Anderson Cooper. I don’t have a type. But I do have what I guess you could call a non-type. It’s my only no-go area: I won’t touch a married man. If you’re wearing a ring, I don’t want anything to do with you. It’s not that I’ve got too high a moral caliber; it’s that I’m too afraid of karma. That, and I would never be able to trust a guy who started dating me while married, so there’s no point in getting involved. Except, I suppose, to have a dead-end fling, and I’m just not the flinging kind of girl (I’m too paranoid about syphilis). The problem with writing off married men is that they’re the only ones who seem interested in me these days. Tim has sort

of disappeared from the planet, and I can’t remember the last time a single guy made a move. But this week, for some reason, I’ve had married men coming at me from every direction. Even my married hairdresser, while combing through the mop he’d just created on top of my head, asked if I’d be interested in going home with him. I didn’t want to tell him to buzz off before he had a chance to take the scissors away from my head, so I changed the subject to leave-in conditioner. In the four

days since then, three other men have stuck their left hands in their pockets before asking if I’d like to share dinner or drinks or a heartfelt conversation about the deteriorating state of their relationship. I’m looking at you, Mr Father-Of-Four. I don’t know why it is that these guys have been so brazen. My guess is that once you’re married, the fear of rejection is no more. If a woman shoots you down, you no longer have to chalk it up to your mediocre looks or a subpar personality; you can blame it on the ring. I also suspect that it’s not really me these guys are interested in. What they really want, like a toddler with his hand by the cookie jar, is to see how far they can push it. It’s a shame that a few bad apples give a lousy name to the heaps of married men out there who are lovely and faithful. (You are all still out there, right?) I’m not giving up hope. I’m holding on to the belief that I’ll meet a onewoman kind of man someday. I don't really have a choice but to keep trying. Because, if you really want to know about my type of guy, he isn’t tall, dark, or even necessarily handsome. In sickness and in health, he’s loyal.

The Perfect Punch For Your Halloween Party

I

Nick Ceparullo and Jon Candelaria of Mixers Mobile Bartending share their secret recipes

F YOU drink alcohol and live in West Chester, you would probably recognize Jon Candelaria and Nick Cepparulo. The two met as bartenders at Kildare's, and though Jon has moved on, you can still find Nick behind the bar serving up some of the most complex shots in town. The two teamed up to start Mixers Mobile Bartending, a company dedicated to making events easier by handling the drinks. You won't be stuck behind the bar while your guests enjoy themselves, and you won't spend hours trying to figure out just what to serve. So, it only made sense that we turn to Nick and Jon for advice when trying to assemble a list of the best punches to serve at your Halloween party, because, after all, what's a Halloween party without the punch? The following are their recommendations: a mixture of the complex shots and cocktails they've created during their time behind the bar. Stoli Punch Stoli Blueberi Stoli Razberi Stoli Ohranj Stoli Vanil Stoli Peachik Orange juice Pineapple juice Made from a mixture of five vodkas with a bit of juice, you can tell this drink is strong the second you taste it, but because of the combination of fruit flavors, it can be difficult to identify the liquor. Try serving it with some orange slices floating about. Grateful Dead Vodka White rum Gin Tequila Triple Sec Sour mix Chambord

Nick Cepparulo, half of the two-man team running MIxers Mobile Bartending, was kind enough to let us try his Halloween punch recipes at Kildare's. He even included a caramel apple shot for good measure. Adam Jones

As if a Long Island Iced Tea weren't a dangerous enough drink, the Grateful Dead substitutes the Coke in favor of raspberry-flavored liqueur for a drink sure to knock you on your keister. Despite the massive quantities of alcohol, this drink is still sweet enough to sip. However, if you're nervous about your guests getting a bit kooky off the punch, you can mix in some Sprite and serve with chunks of pineapple.

Grape Gatorade

White Gummy Bear

Grape vodka Blue Curacao Cranberry juice Sour mix

Raspberry vodka Peach schnapps Sour mix Club soda

Sometimes drinks have clever names, and other times the name is pretty much an exact description of the taste you're sipping. This is the latter. For a twisted punch, go easy on the sour mix and toss in some sour Trolli Gummy Worms and lemon slices.

Everybody knows white gummy bears are the best, and this aptly named punch is a delicious homage. Without soda it's extremely sweet and sour, so mix in the bubbly to your liking. Try mashing up kiwi and floating the pieces about in this eerie white concoction.

If you're interested in hiring Mixers Mobile Bartending for your holiday party, you can find them on the web at mixersmobilebartending.com

A Trainer’s Tips On Staying Fit

D

Christine Mooney shares her insights on staying happy and healthy

ICTIONARY.COM and the 700-page Merriam-Webster dictionary I was inexplicably gifted several Christmases ago, define the term “core” in basically the same fashion: “the central, innermost, or most essential part of anything.” Let me repeat that. The core is the most essential part of anything. That’s no small potatoes. Core has many meanings to multitudes of people. It is a term full of nuance, whether it is used in reference to the core of a social movement, the foundation of one’s own spirituality, the crux of a problem (or its solution). Here, though, we’ll narrow it down a bit to within the realm of health and fitness, where, to me, core refers to two different but interconnected concepts. First of all, there is a human’s physical core, also known as the “posterior chain,” those muscles, ligaments and tendons that stretch from your back through your hips to your hamstrings, constituting the backbone of your physical essence. And something that central, that essential, cannot be under-

estimated or ignored. Typically, I subscribe to the belief that true core strength comes from big complex lifts (my absolute favorite being the deadlift). But I also understand that a lot of people, for a variety of reasons, are uncomfortable with the idea of lifting heavy things, and there’s also a good chance that those people do not want to spend their life doing crunches (of which I’m a little dubious anyways). So how can a person who does not want to lift weights train this muscle group? Pilates defines the body’s core as “the

powerhouse.” Much of the practice concentrates on this central part of the body, where strength comes from muscle control and concentration. And looking at a Pilates studio’s website, such as Blue Rock Yoga and Pilates on Lenape Road, the concept of training the core is iterated again and again. To test the Pilates way, I recently attended a class at Blue Rock with a friend of mine. Throughout the warm-up, workout and cool-down, the focus was on the body’s core. We moved through plank positions, leg circles, V-sits, all the while being coached by the instructor, Caroline, to feel the breath deep in our abdomens, always keeping the core engaged. Although Pilates also uses machines, this version was strictly on exercise mats, so it was appropriate for all fitness levels. My core felt worked by the end of class, but core strength takes practice and hard work. Your health must be at the core of your being, an essential part of your existence. The physical ability to engage in your own life is key. Let me repeat that. It is key.

We geek out with Adam Weinstein of West Chester Computer Doctors

OU CAN argue the semantics of nerd versus geek all day, but it certainly all boils down to a major difference, because while Adam Weinstein is a geek by trade, he certainly isn’t a nerd. He likes snowboarding, live music and craft beers – all decidedly non-nerdy interests... at least in our opinion. But, when it comes to your computer, Adam is a total geek. As one of the techs at West Chester Computer Doctors, Adam spends his days solving the PC problems that perplex the rest of us. Hard drive developing a hiccup? Things running slower than you remember? Adam will not only fix the problem, but he’ll explain it in terms even the technologically illiterate can understand. We caught up with Adam and asked him to explain to us in layman’s terms just what he does. Name: Adam Weinstein Age: 26 Hometown: Allentown How long have you been at West Chester Computer Doctors? Three and a half years. When did you get into computers? I started on computers at a really early age. I first worked on a Apple IIC when I was eight. I was about 14 when I first really got into computers, and I built my first computer back when I was 15 years old. Where did you go to school? I majored in Professional Studies at West Chester University with minors in Psychology, Health Studies and Information Technology. Who is your typical client? We cater to small to mid-size businesses as well as to individuals. What other technology are you into? I dabble in music and work with home theater equipment, but I’m mainly into PCs. So you started on a Mac, but you’re not a Mac guy? I think Macs are fantastic if you can afford the initial investment - the maintenance is way easier. I just happen to work with PCs a lot more, though we work with both here. But you probably prefer Android to iOS? Yes. I like that Android is open and much more customizable. Personally, I have a Droid Incredible II. What’s the most common problem you see come through the door? Viruses. People often get them because something pops up telling you that your system is vulnerable and you need such and such virus protection. They

For Adam, computers have long been a part of his life. “I first worked on an Apple IIC when I was eight,” he says. “I built my first computer when I was 15 years old.” Adam Jones try to convince you to buy this software to fix the problem, but they’re really just stealing your credit card information. Is there a particularly good anti-virus software that stops these? Most of the major anti-virus software available is really vulnerable. MacAfee and Norton are so common that the viruses know their way around them. We have this excellent program we’re working with that - once we configure it basically runs your browser in a separate environment than the rest of your computer. That way, anything you come across on the

internet goes into this separate box, and that box is then emptied. It’s virus-proof. What’s your best suggestion for keeping a computer running well? Maintenance is paramount to keeping your computer running optimally. Simple things like clearing your temporary files and managing start-up applications. You can also add additional memory. Do you guys do that? Absolutely. Not all computers can accept additional memory, but we always give free estimates and free advice. Plus we sell brand-new laptops and desktops if you need to go that route.

HE PUMPKIN is carved, your costume is on, you’ve mixed a bowl of punch (check out the great recipes on page 35) and spilled fake blood all over. Now all that’s left is the music. We all have a set of Halloween favorites (unless you’re one of those people who prefers creepy ambient noises to actual Halloween music). This list represents mine. While I had to pay my respects to the king of pop by placing his, the most requested Halloween song, at the top of the list, I have also mixed in some lesser-known tracks that are all equally haunting and are sure to set the right mood. It’s Just A Three-Letter Word

O

Jill McDevitt explores why something as natural and necessary as sex is so taboo

CTOBER is Family Sex Education Month, a good time to reflect on how notoriously crappy most parents are at teaching something as important as sexuality to their children, and a good time to make attempts to be less crappy for your kids. What do you wish your parents taught you about sex, but didn’t? One person I surveyed answered, “the emotional side.” Another said, “their values and expectations of me,” while a third mentioned, “I just wish they taught me about sex.” Children are thirsty for guidance from their parents – guidance about sexual values, feelings and behaviors is no exception, yet parents become extremely uncomfortable with facing this particular responsibility. In a culture as sex-negative as ours, I totally understand where the discomfort comes from. I offer consultations for parents on how to make the “birds and bees” conversation with their kids easier, but here are a few tips to get you started. 1. When referring to your child’s genitals, use proper anatomy terms. It’s not a who-ha, pee-pee, or “down there.” When you teach the

www

other body parts like nose and knee, you don’t give them nicknames, so why the genitals? Calling it something else is step one in a long line of unfortunate, shame-filled messages that say, “This part of your body is so dirty, I can’t even say the word.” 2. Have the same rules and expectations for male and female children. Let your son cry; let your daughter help fix the clogged sink. When they’re older, give them the same curfew and rules about dating. Equal gender roles are important for development and future relation-

ships. They are more likely to be respectful in these relationships because they were raised valuing all genders. 3. Never force your child to kiss or hug anyone hello or goodbye, even Grandma. They may be small, but they have the right to an autonomous body. 4. Be “age-appropriate” but realize that your understanding of what is age-appropriate is probably several years off. Teaching about periods at age 9, waiting until 13 to bring up sex, and lecturing about condoms while dropping your kid off at the college dorm is a day late and a dollar short. If you haven’t talked yet, it’s better to start late than not at all, but ideally sexuality conversations should start much sooner than the child will actually need the information, so by the time they do, they are prepared and confident in their knowledge and values. Jill McDevitt holds a master’s degree in Human Sexuality and is currently completing her PhD, which will make her the only person in the country with three degrees in the field. She is the proprietor of Feminique Boutique on Church Street. Her book, Fighting the Crusade Against Sex: Being Sex-Positive in a Sex-Negative World, is due out in November.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

These beautiful creatures need homes... call the Chester County SPCA at 610-692-6113

«

EARL and SAMPSON are two tabby cats that were left behind in an apartment when their owner moved away. They are brothers and are very bonded, so they would prefer to be adopted together. Both boys are very sweet and loving and are available for the special adoption fee of $25 per kitty.

«

LEXI is a two-year-old domestic short-haired cat whose owners could not keep their two cats because a family member was allergic. Lexi’s cat friend was adopted, so now she is here alone and looking for a new home. She gets along with kids, dogs and other cats.

«

STEW is an adult, male lop-eared rabbit that was brought to the SPCA because his owner did not have time to care for him. He has previously lived with children and seems to be a friendly bunny who would make a great first pet. All he requires is a bit of food, water and someone to pet him.

The West Chester Food Safari

I

Jeremy Malanka finds a spot of sunshine in the middle of his work day

LOVE breakfast and everything about it. It’s the best way to start a successful, focused day. But lunch… Lunch breaks up the day, offers you a respite from the office, your kids, your boss, or whatever else you need to get away from, if only briefly. It’s a built-in break with endless possibilities. West Chester offers an array of places to get you through the first half of a long day and hold you over until dinner. The Roots Café, located on the first block of West Gay Street is a place WC regulars remember as Nick’s Café. Times have changed, and Roots has come in with a bang. Their goal is a sustainable, green restaurant catering to today’s eco-friendly diner. They are meeting their goal deliciously. With young owners and staff, the menu is fresh and modern, offering organic items and specialty cheeses that take the worry out of mystery meat. My favorite is their spin on the classic Cordon Bleu: it’s melty and gooey and salty in all the right spots. Check out their new grilled cheese menu and soup pairings just in time for the cold weather.

When you really want to get away and take yourself out of the stressful work week, stop in Arianne’s Gourmet Café in the back of the Cambridge Shopping Center. Their beautifully decorated place settings look like your grandmother’s kitchen table set for guests, and the food follows suit with quiches and gourmet sandwiches – it’s like your grandmother talked your mom into keeping you home from school and spoiled you with a decadent lunch. It’s absolutely amazing. The atmosphere is quiet but not stifled, and the seating is cozy and warm. You always need a quick and easy option, and Limoncello’s lunch buffet delivers. With

an average of over 150 people enjoying it daily, the proof is in the pudding, or I should I say, pasta. The buffet changes daily but staples remain, including fresh, seasonal vegetables, pizzas, strombolis, pasta varieties and frittatas. Pescatore risotto is popular, as well salmon putanseca and grilled, Italian-seasoned pork chops. So when the office lunch buddies can’t decide on pizza or salad, take ‘em to a place where the menu is tangible and the descriptions are smellable. Late breakfast? Is it Friday? If you answered yes to both (or either), then go to Side Bar for a liquid lunch and enjoy one of their 20 beers on tap. Have a beer and an app and celebrate the fact that Monday is three days away and the weekend is here. I love the sweet potato tots with zesty chili lime applesauce for dipping with a big pint of IPA. The kitchen is always coming up with great sandwich specials and offers food and beer pairings daily. My favorite items have been a duck hot dog and an andouille Texas Tommy. Either way, you won’t want to go back to work.

PHOTOGRAPHER Graham Nolte roams the streets of West Chester on a mission... to give away a beautiful bouquet of flowers. But it’s not quite THAT easy to win – first he put Laura Gates and Josh Wagner on the spot with three questions... Laura, do you find me attractive? Well, you have pretty blue eyes... so that’s intriguing. Thank you. Josh, what did you think when you saw me with the flowers? I thought you were giving them to me, so I got all excited. And what do you plan on doing after this ambush? Josh: Probably just keep walking through town like we were doing before you interrupted. Flowers courtesy of...
