A note from the Head of School

"What does a Webb graduate look like?" In speaking to a group which was composed of members who wanted to learn more about how Webb educates its students, I felt that it could be best accomplished by asking the question, “What does a Webb graduate look like?” The points that I have listed below are by no means exhaustive, but I believe that they are fundamental in all that we do to educate young people. • Understands the importance of honor and integrity – Since the founding of the school in 1870, honor and integrity have been the cornerstone of Webb. The honor council and honor book are important expressions of our commitment to honor, and this commitment is reinforced throughout the year in chapel. “Noli res subdole facere”, “Do nothing on the sly”, is a time-honored phrase to support the honor code. • Self-confidence – This is fostered by daily interactions in the classroom with faculty and peers, and is magnified by our required speech class, and our Emerging Voices program, in which each student speaks publicly each year. • Knowledge of how to solve complex problems – Our inquiry approach to science, and our problem-based learning in mathematics are just two examples of how we provide a foundation of problem solving and creativity for our students. • Ability to work collaboratively with others – Because of our small class sizes, nearly every class at Webb supports collaborative work among the students.

• Multicultural competency – This is inherent in the makeup of Webb. Our students represent many countries, states, and 26 cities in Tennessee. The faculty members also come from many different parts of the United States and a few from foreign countries. Daily interactions with each other produce many opportunities to learn about other cultures.

• Academically prepared to excel at the next level – We have a curriculum that can challenge the best of students while also challenging each student at his or her level. We now offer 22 different AP classes and are investigating partnering with Middle Tennessee State University in a dual-enrollment program for 20162017. • Kind, considerate, and compassionate – The size of Webb, our daily interactions, and that we meet as a whole school four times each week, provide many opportunities to address the notion of “how we treat each other.” Required community service allows our students to see the value of becoming a servant leader. • Knowledge of how to be a leader – There are many leadership opportunities at Webb, and here are just a few examples: Student Council, classes during collaborative exercises, clubs, sports, dormitory prefects, WILD (Wilderness Instruction and Leadership Development), and the E.E. Ford Foundation project in Fostering Student Initiative. • Ability to speak up for themselves (self-advocacy) – We encourage our students to do this, weaning them from the 6th grade to the 12th grade. • Excellent written and spoken communications – The Emerging Voices and speech classes are instrumental in developing speaking and writing skills. Writing is emphasized across the curriculum, and even science and math classes focus on writing.

There are many facets of a Webb education, and I know that I did not cover all of them. We are proud of our past, working hard in the present to be the best that we can be, and we do our best to provide our students with the skills that they need to be leaders of the future.

The Webb School Magazine

• Ability to sort through an overload of information to find and discern what is relevant – From the beginning in 6th grade, students take Focus 6 which teaches reading comprehension, research skills, and study skills. These skills are emphasized in a relevant manner in every course. We test our ability to do this well by administering an exam called the CWRA (College Work and Readiness Assessment) to our 9th grade students and then again in the 11th and 12th grades. Our test results show that our students grow more than our national peer groups in their time at Webb.

• A balanced world view – In addition to our multicultural community, the Emerging Voices program gives students an opportunity to share their culture and/or viewpoint on a variety of issues. Through 10th grade orations, 11th grade performances, and 12th grade research papers, students can share their ideas, opinions, and culture.

Seniors receive blazers continuing tradition; Clint Hall '98 keynote speaker The 59 seniors in the Class of 2016 participated in Blazer Day, one of many traditions, Nov. 10, as they received their senior blazers in a special chapel ceremony. The presentation is scheduled annually on or near the birthday of founder, W. R. “Sawney” Webb, who was born on Nov. 11, 1842. Marking the Blazer Day ceremony, Clint Hall, a Webb 1998 graduate, was the keynote speaker. As seniors continued the longtime Blazer Day tradition, the class members also had the opportunity to ring the bell that once stood at the original school in Culleoka, Tenn., where Sawney Webb and brother, John Webb, began their classes. Each year, alumni of the school present the blazers during a school-wide chapel service. This year, Middle School Head Tabetha Sullens ’94, and George Huddleston ’76, of Murfreesboro and Stuart Smith ’99, of Mountain View, Mo., both members of the alumni board, participated. Parents, underclassmen, faculty, staff and guests attended the event.

Two seniors, Andrew Cooper and Ulysses Yu, were named National Merit Scholarship Program Semifinalists in September. Seniors, M’Kenzy Cannon, Sarah Beth Menck, Jim Sherwood and Anna Claire Tuma, each received a 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program Letter of Commendation. Cooper, a Smithville resident, and Yu, a San Francisco, Calif., resident, are among the top 1 percent of 2015-16 U.S. high school seniors to achieve the semifinalist distinction. They are eligible to continue in the competition and to vie for 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth approximately $33 million that will be offered next spring. “This is a tremendous accomplishment for Andrew and Ulysses.

Their PSAT scores were 225 or better, and each had one perfect score of 80 in one category of the three,” said Head of School Ray Broadhead. “We wish them the best of luck as they move forward in the process to win a prestigious National Merit Scholarship.” Nashville residents Cannon and Menck, Sherwood of Smithville and Tuma of Murfreesboro, are among approximately 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation who are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2016 competition for National Merit Scholarships, Commended Students placed among the top 5 percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2016 competition.

Webb sets record with 41 AP Scholars Forty-one students, the most ever at Webb, were named Advanced Placement Scholars in July. Additionally five achieved national ranking and one received an AP International Diploma. Webb students passed 84 percent of all exams taken – an increase of 2 percent from the prior year. Also, a total of 84.3 percent of Webb students achieved a score eligible for college credit and/or advanced placement in college courses. The pass rate in Tennessee was 61.1 percent, and the worldwide pass rate, 60.6 percent. The students’ recognition is based on their spring 2015 AP exam scores. Eighty-nine Webb students took a total of 204 AP exams. Webb offered 20 Advanced Placement classes in 2014-15. Seven Webb courses had every student earn a passing grade. A total of 4.5 million exams were taken worldwide, and more than 50,000 Tennessee students took more than 31,000 exams in 2015. Tianling “Ron” Gao, China, received an International Diploma. This recognition is granted to international students who take two AP exams from two different world language and culture courses or two AP exams from one world language and culture course and one English course, take one AP exam offering a global perspective, take one AP exam from either the sciences, or math and computer science, and one additional AP exam -- cannot be English or a world language. They also must receive scores of 3 or higher (out of five) on five or more AP exams in three or more subject areas. Gao also received national recognition that is granted to all students who receive an average score of at least four (out of 5) on all AP exams taken and scores of four or higher on eight or more of these exams. Matthew Cooper, Smithville, Tenn.; Paige Schoonover, Clarksville, Tenn.; Chang “David” Han, China; and Lauren Livengood, Grand Blanc, Mich.; were also named National AP Scholars.

Field Studies expand classroom boundaries

Fall-Winter 2015-2016

Webb students visited colleges, volunteered and served others, participated in career development, and learned about the environment as all the student body participated in Field Studies in October.

“By extending our classroom beyond the boundaries of our campus, field studies give our students and advisors a shared opportunity to get to know each other better and to share a common experience,” said Angela Rasnick, Webb director of studies. She added that they broaden Webb’s curriculum. “I think that the field studies experiences enhance our curriculum and extend many areas of our curriculum into the larger world.” Students enjoying canoeing during Field Studies

As an example, a two night/three day trip was planned for the ninth graders at the Y.M.C.A. Camp Ocoee near Cleveland, Tenn. The group focused on the environment and experiential education and was introduced to an outdoor climbing tower, canoeing and the Parksville Lake area. Webb supports a group of six core tenets called Enduring Understandings – value statements that reflect the school’s founding vision and connect current students and alumni. The sophomore class carried out the enduring understanding that “Each person shares the responsibility and honor of serving others.” Students assisted with classroom activities at Cascade, Southside and Eastside elementary schools and Thomas Magnet School, all in Bedford County.

Whitley attends animation workshop, awarded scholarship Screenings of his “Souvenirs D’avant” continue at film festivals Dustin Whitley ’17 was among 52 students from a field of 1,000 applicants selected to participate in a month-long summer animation workshop. At the close of the event that was sponsored by the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, he was awarded an $80,000 scholarship if he is accepted and attends CalArts after his 2017 graduation from Webb. The summer workshop followed the spring screenings of Whitley’s animated film

“Souvenirs D’avant” at the Toronto and Los Angeles film festivals. On Aug. 28, a screening was held at the Topanga Film Festival, Topanga, Calif. He has other screenings pending. “Souvenirs D’avant” is a three-minute, hand-drawn animation with thousands of images. It is a multi-year project that he completed during the 2014-2015 school year.

Rasnick travels with Confucius Institute delegation to China; Webb adds teacher and Chinese language classes Director of Studies Angela Rasnick traveled to China in June with a delegation that was hosted by the Confucius Institute at Middle Tennessee State University. The delegation visited three major cities in China, Shanghai, Hangzhou and Beijing. Also among the participants were Mike Novak, Institute assistant director, and his wife, Jessica, Murfreesboro, parents of Emma Roy ’21. Activities included cultural excursions to visit the Great Wall and Forbidden City among other sites, and touring Chinese schools and meeting with Chinese educational administrators, including the country’s Commissioner of Education. Rasnick said she appreciated the opportunity to experience the culture of Webb’s Chinese international students. “I am very thankful for the opportunity to visit China. Being able to visit the country that so many of our international students (20 enrolled for 2015-2016) call home gave me much insight to their culture, traditions, and rich heritage.” She added, “Our delegation had the opportunity to meet with top education officials, visit four

International students take advantage of Webb's Intensive English Language Institute Eight students from China and Japan attended the first Intensive English Summer Institute at Webb. Planned for students ages 14-18, the participants, who were not Webb students, arrived on campus July 12 for the four-week program. Students worked to develop language and social skills through group interactions, travel and classroom curriculum. Additionally, students received a total of 18 hours of ELL classroom instruction per week to improve reading, writing and comprehension of the English language. Director of the Institute is Daiva Berzinskas, Webb’s ELL teacher. Berzinskas has a Master of Education/TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) Curriculum and Instruction, and is an International English Language Testing System examiner. “The Institute immersed students in the English

language while fostering cooperation and respect among differing cultures,” said Berzinskas. “Weekday activities and weekend trips to local landmarks and events created an unmatched cultural experience. I hope to see the enrollment of the program grow and diversify in the coming years.”

Follin Speaker Series begins with two fall events “Freedom Sings” and “My Father’s War,” were the first two events in The Webb School Follin Speaker Series for 20152016. The series is an endowed program at Webb.

Fall-Winter 2015-2016

Promotion for “Freedom Sings” describes it as “an entertaining, engaging and inspiring story of free speech in America told through rock, pop, hip-hop and country music.” Among cast members was Lari White, an award-winning recording artist, hit songwriter and producer, indie record label owner, and actress. White’s music has earned three Grammys, and she’s had songs cut by Tammy Wynette, Toby Keith and Lonestar.

“My Father’s War” was presented at the same time the “Moving Wall” was in Bell Buckle on the Webb campus. Promotion for “My Father’s War” notes that it “is a story of war, survival and grace adapted and was performed by Carol Ponder and Robert Kiefer - from the memoir ‘Ponder Anew’ by Lt. Herschel Ponder. It’s about a boy who enlists in the Army Air Corps. He becomes a ‘professional exterminator’ flying P-47 Thunderbolts.

When he comes home … he must reintegrate into civilian life while struggling with posttraumatic stress disorder and other unseen wounds from his war.”

The “Moving Wall,” the half-size replica of the Washington, DC Vietnam Veterans Memorial that has been touring the country for more than 30 years, was open to the public, free of charge, on the Webb campus Nov. 5-9. The event was organized by Asad and Cheryl Khan (Jesseca ’09, Syra ’15). Billy Hix will complete the series with his presentation “Science Rocks” on April 12 at 2:20 p.m. Hix was selected in April 2011 to be one of three teacher liaisons in the United States with the Space Foundation of Colorado. He works under the direction of Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson, “Cosmos” and “NOVA” television series host. Hix supports teachers worldwide to integrate space science into the curricula. In April of 2013, he was selected as the Space Foundation Teacher of the Year from the United States. He worked for NASA between 1997 and 2007 as a Faculty Fellow at Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., and currently serves NASA in an advisory role.

Truitt honored with 2015 Faculty Enrichment Award; service awards presented Sandy Truitt, with 41 years as a math teacher, was recognized by The Webb School Parents’ Association with the 2015 WSPA Faculty Enrichment Award. Ashley Segroves, WSPA past president, presented the award at the opening of school recognition dinner on Aug. 10. The Faculty Enrichment Award is presented annually to an outstanding member of the teaching faculty who has taught at The Webb School for at least three years. Students and families cast votes to select the recipient. Several other awards were presented at the annual event by Ray Broadhead, head of school. Brian Wofford, coordinator of the Outerlimits Program and Wilderness Instructional Leadership Development (W.I.L.D.) teacher, was honored for 30 years of service. Jacquelyn Boyanton, English Department chair; James Garcia, English teacher; and Janet Linton, Fine Arts Department chair; were recognized for 15 years of service. Julie Harris, director of Ashley Segroves, Webb School Parents’ Association admissions; Melissa James, past president, presents Sandy Truitt with the administrative assistant; 2015 WSPA Faculty Enrichment Award. and A.J. Ray Broadhead, head of school; Meredith Crockett, director of special events and outreach; Greg Imboden, math teacher; Teddy Schaffer, math teacher; and Sarah Swafford, director of residential activities; were recognized for five years of service.

Truitt received an A.B. degree from Albertus Magnus College and a M.S. from University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. She joined the Webb faculty in 1974. She teaches College Algebra & Trigonometry and AP Calculus BC and serves as prom advisor and is the advisor for the National Honor Society and Cum Laude Society. “I am really grateful to The Webb School for all the support given me in so many different ways,” said Truitt. “I have really grown up here, and I have loved every day that I have worked here.”

Sixteen Webb students – seven sixth graders and nine seventh graders – qualified for the Duke University Talent Identification Program, a nonprofit organization serving academically gifted and talented youth. “Duke TIP is an excellent program that allows talented and gifted students to explore their academic potential. One opportunity that Duke TIP gives to these talented students is the ability to take the SAT or ACT for free. Later, when they take these tests for college, they will walk into the testing center confident in their abilities,” said Emily Feldbruegge, Webb assistant director of college counseling. This year’s qualifying seventh graders were Bailey Cavner, Cole Curtze, Hadley Foulk, Gracie Keith, Kai Nafrada, Taylor Petersen, Alex Schuler, Lane Todd, and Lillie Waddell. Qualifying sixth graders were Phoebe Smith, Lola Reyes, Iris Reyes, Lilly King, Benjamin Greenberg, Grayson Rone, and Kaden Thephavong.

Vincent claims multiple bowling honors Donovan Vincent ’20 has claimed individual and team honors bowling this fall. During Labor Day weekend, Vincent qualified for Jr. Gold, an invitation-only youth bowling tournament where he will compete on a national level with elite youth bowlers across the country in Indianapolis Summer 2016. Anna Claire Tuma '16 with her parents, Bob ’87 and Claire Tuma, and, from left, Chief Petty Officer Mike Moretti, Petty Officer 2nd Class Chris Cormier and Commander Todd Sullivan, who made the presentation.

Tuma receives four-year ROTC scholarship as she plans her career As a freshman at Webb, Anna Claire Tuma set a goal -- to join the military and serve her country -- and as a sophomore, Tuma knew she wanted to be a pilot in the military. In November the senior received affirmation and reassurance that she can continue working toward her goal.

Fall-Winter 2015-2016

Tuma received a U.S. Navy ROTC four-year scholarship to attend Auburn University, where she has been accepted. The senior also has received a letter of assurance from West Point U.S. Military Academy pending a Congressional appointment, and she has applied to the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy and for a Air Force ROTC scholarship. Pursuing the Congressional appointment, Tuma has completed interviews with Sens. Bob Corker and Lamar Alexander, and is scheduled to interview with Rep. Scott DeJarlais soon. Results of her applications and interviews vary with some notifications made in December, some in February and others with announcement dates between now and April.

10

“Everything I’ve done since my freshman year was to prepare me,” she said. That’s when she became focused on maintaining good grades, staying physically fit on Webb’s sports teams and increasing her commitment to leadership, service-learning and other extracurricular activities. She also participated in the Young Marines Program and earned a private pilot’s license in preparation for her career. “I was so happy to know that I would be given the opportunity to serve my country. It was really reassuring to me,” Tuma said about receiving the ROTC scholarship announcement. “I was so honored," she added, noting that her career goal is becoming more and more real. “I’ve worked so hard. It was acknowledged and was so worth it.”

Tuma said her parents were very happy and proud of her. “They’ve watched me through the process. They know that it is a huge sense of relief for me that I’ve finally gotten some reassurance.” When the Webb senior was applying for the ROTC scholarship, she was also completing applications to three service academies, as well as Auburn and other universities. Each application required essays and letters of recommendation. Tuma said she lost count of the number of essays she wrote to submit with each of the applications. “The determination that Anna Claire has demonstrated in pursuit of her dream of joining the United States military has been nothing short of remarkable,” said Chris Rodriguez, Webb director of college counseling. “Four-year scholarship offers for ROTC programs are becoming increasingly rare, and are only extended to those that the military recognizes as possessing a rare blend of high intelligence, unshakable character, and a selfless willingness to serve their country. Anna Claire represents the ideal of what Webb aspires to produce in its students, so I’m not at all surprised that she earned this honor.” Tuma’s resume reflects the academic, leadership, athletic, and community service accomplishments of someone focused on a goal. But she’s quick to point out all her “partners” in the process. “I thank my parents, all the teachers, coaches and others who have helped me along the way. I would not be where I am without their help.”

It's a question often asked of administrators, faculty and staff. “What’s it like to be a student at Webb today?” While the days can be as varied as the students and their interests, Andrew Cooper, a senior day student from Smithville, Tenn., agreed to be “shadowed” on Thursday, Nov. 12, to help answer that question. Cooper, a 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program Semifinalist, has academic honors and awards, leadership and community-service recognitions, musical passions and athletics pursuits. He has been a member of the Honor Council for two years (currently serving as vice president), is a member of the National Honor Society and is co-editor of The Oracle (school newspaper). He has also been a member of the varsity tennis team since his freshman year. He was named an Advanced Placement Scholar with Honor in 2015, was a Tennessee Boys State delegate and received the Harvard Book Prize (awarded to an outstanding student in the junior class who demonstrates excellence in scholarship and high character combined with achievement in other fields). He has attended the Tennessee Governor’s School for the Arts and the University of Alabama SITE Program taking classes in engineering, math, computer science and English. His volunteer service interests include the Second Harvest Food Pantry, “Grow-a-Row” Project and the 30-Hour Famine and Recycling Program at his church.

Dr. Forsbergh ’68 weaves career, mission work, life experiences into his poetry Dr. Eric Forsbergh ’68 has lived a varied and interesting life as a dentist with a 33-year practice, a Vietnam veteran, a participant in mission trips to provide free dental care in distressed areas, and as a successful poet. He attributes much of his fulfillment to early influences at home and six years spent as a Webb student.

Fall-Winter 2015-2016

“Webb accepted me into a small seventh grade class at the age of 12. Six years later, I graduated as an articulate, disciplined, and driven student, and importantly, a student with lifelong curiosity, a crucial element in my overall success,” Forsbergh said. “Henry Whiteside (principal), Coach Lucas Boyd, and Clement Cook (English teacher), Dr. Eric Forsbergh '68 instilled in me the notions of honesty above all, high standards, hard work, fair play, and the leadership vision to carry me forward.” He added, “My experience is that the academic demands of Webb were never surpassed by the difficult demands of any academic institution I attended after Webb. The Webb School completely primed me for success. It taught that having native intelligence is not an alternative to the path of hard work. Hard work is the only path.” Forsbergh, who resides and practices general dentistry in Reston, Va., was raised in Massachusetts and Tennessee, and after graduating from Webb, he served in the Navy from 1969-1973. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Tennessee and then attended the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry graduating in 1981. He and his wife, Yvonne, have two children, Leigh and Ross. His sister Natalie Gray ’73 and brother Jim

Gray ’74 are also Webb graduates. Rekindling an early interest in his love of poetry writing, he draws on the education of all his life experiences as inspiration. His work has garnered the Edgar Allen Poe Memorial Prize from the Poetry Society of Virginia in 2013 and 2014, in addition to other awards. The poetry recognition led to a book offer, and his first book entitled “Imagine Morning” was published in 2013. Forsbergh writes mostly free verse, but notes that “there is an important discipline to be practiced in the writing of formal verse, such as sonnets.” He captures his thoughts as an idea surfaces and tends to write in a flurry of activity. “I’ll write five or six poems in a week, then spend the next two months revising them, which is where the poems actually come to life. My wife comments that she sees my scribblings on sticky notes lying about the house most of the time. Then I harvest them and get to work. Except that it’s not work, it’s a form of play.” While he considers the writing process pleasant, some of his life experiences, such as the mission trips to provide dental care in Guatemala and Appalachia, reflect the grim realities faced by the residents of those areas.

treats patients and teaches as mission at hospital in Honduras Two or three times a year, Dr. Robert H. Lewis, Jr. ’68 leaves his 35-year private practice as an oral and maxillofacial surgeon in Rogers, Ark., to treat patients and train plastic surgery residents at Hospital Escuela in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. As director of Maxillofacial Surgery for Operation New Life, a multi-specialty ministry to Central America, he has made 22 trips and treated patients with trauma, such as multiple gunshot wounds to the face, tumors, and facial, head and neck deformities. As an adjunct professor in the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Hospital Escuela, he has taught the residents techniques that they would not be exposed to otherwise. “The most rewarding aspect of all of this is the knowledge that you are providing care for someone who otherwise would receive no care at all. Even though this is a faith-based ministry, I am no evangelist. I prefer to serve by teaching and helping the patients,” Lewis said. Operation New Life surgical teams include orthopedics, general surgery, ear, nose and throat, maxillofacial, burns, obstetrics/ gynecology, plastics and family medicine. The organization typically has a team in Honduras for two weeks every month.

Wife, Mary Lewis, left, and daughter, Rebecca Wade, with Dr. Lewis on one of the trips “Generally when we go, we take a full surgical team that includes nurses, an anesthesiologist, support personnel, equipment and supplies,” Lewis explained. “In addition we take a prayer team which ministers to the needy within the hospital.” The trips have become family affairs for Lewis who, at times, is accompanied by his wife Mary, a nurse; his older son Paul, a second-year oral surgery resident; and younger daughter Rebecca Wade, a teacher, who serves as translator. All ONL participants fund their own travel and lodging costs. The program is funded through donations.

The first full day of each trip involves seeing 80-100 patients. “This is one of the major teaching opportunities as we teach the young surgeons to assess these patients and plan their surgeries.” Lewis noted that after all of the patients have been seen, the team selects the 25 to 30 who are in the greatest need of surgery and provide the best opportunity for teaching. “Then we run two operating rooms with three surgeons, one helping where he is needed most.” Dr. Lewis performing surgery at Hospital Escuela

Hospital Escuela is an 1,800-bed facility that provides primarily indigent care. It is also where all of the medical and dental students receive their training and most post-doctoral training is done. “The operating rooms are always full of students, and it’s one of the things I really love about it.”

13

Dr. Forsbergh ’68 continued The Webb alum became interested in dental mission when a medical missionary spoke at his church about his work in Guatemala. He has followed up with two trips to Guatemala in the 1990s traveling with another dentist and his sister, who is a registered nurse. She served as a dental assistant and as translator. The mission trip to Appalachia was with a periodontist. “In Guatemala, it was, to put it mildly, a first-come-first-served free-for-all. We would show up at a different school each day for 10 days, and there would be 100 or so people waiting for us. We never finished all patients who had come to see us on any of those days. In Appalachia, through the organization Remote Area Medical, there was a good triage system for extractions, fillings or cleanings, depending on the patient need.” Safety and crowd control at the treatment locations in Guatemala were issues, but it was the abject poverty, overall poor hygiene conditions and malnutrition that Forsbergh can vividly recall. “Along an alleyway one day I saw a naked girl, about nine, with sticks for limbs, and a large protruding belly due to Kwashiorkor, the last stage of starvation prior to death. Since then I have never complained about another thing in my life,” he said.

Even though he could not understand the patients he treated, “the community leaders in Guatemala made it clear that they thought of our team as a gift from God. In Appalachia, patients expressed their gratitude freely, but more often, they would describe the hardships of life. While I was there, one woman I saw for fillings said she had driven 100 miles and slept in her car for two nights at the treatment site, so she could be sure of getting treatment. “My mission trips were, and will be, my expression of leadership by example in giving back to the community and world in which we live, even when it presents me with difficulty and personal discomfort,” he explained. “That’s usually when and where that service is most desperately needed. The importance of this work lies in providing care for people who have none.” As for the other facets of his life, he noted that dentistry still provides him with a “pleasurable combination of intellectual challenge and working with his hands for the benefit of improving the health” of his patients. He added, “I’ll keep writing, and as I accumulate enough content, I’ll start to frame out my next book, assuming my editor and publisher still like me.”

Dr. Lewis ’68 continued There are other things to consider, such as safety and security, when treating patients in another country and in a city that is known as one of the most dangerous in the world primarily due to drug trafficking. “We stay in a small hotel very near the hospital and only travel in groups,” he said. “We really don't feel we are at risk.” Lewis, a graduate of the University of Tennessee Dental School who completed residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery at the UT Health Science Center, credits his family and Webb with shaping him more than any other experience. A native of Bells, Tenn., Lewis attended Webb because his father, Robert H. Lewis Sr., had attended a Webb summer camp in the late 1930s and his uncle, Sam Lewis ’53 graduated from Webb. Cousins, Dr. Bob Patrick '60 and Leigh Lewis Butler ’82, are also Webb alums.

Fall-Winter 2015-2016

He enrolled at Webb in 1966 as a junior. “It was outstanding. I almost wished that I had gotten to Webb sooner,” Lewis said, adding that he could have taken higher-level math and also physics.

14

After leaving public school for Webb, he explained, “All of a sudden you had to work hard, you were forced to work hard whether you wanted to or not. And until you got the hang of it, that was a little bit of a bitter pill to swallow.” But he quickly realized the value. “Luke Boyd, and (headmaster) Mr. (Henry) Whiteside in history, Mr. (Clement) Cook in English and “Doc” (Allen) Zerla in chemistry all made my early years in college a breeze.” “‘Don’t do anything on the sly’ always sticks with you, that commitment to integrity,” he said. “This will always be important when tempted to do something the easy way.” Lewis finds a dearth of that commitment in people today disheartening. “The majority of people just don’t get it. You see it every day in the way people treat each other and in their business practices.” He added, “When you learn ‘Don’t do anything on the sly’, you learn to work hard and you know that your teachers absolutely expect more, I think we who have been to Webb rise to the occasion. Too bad all of our politicians didn’t go to Webb. They wouldn’t be doing all this hokey-pokey they’re doing.” Lewis forged lifelong friendships as a boarding student. Classmates, Charles Alexander, George Pine, Forrest Shoaf and others, still keep in touch. “We went through some really challenging times together. There’s a real bond there.” And, he’s proud of these and other classmates, citing the large percentage of the Class of 1968 who have accomplished much and been very successful. While his friendships were and still are very important, Lewis jokes that not having female students to talk with while enrolled at the all-male Webb of his day, “was socially detrimental” to him. “When I went to college, that was a real problem for a while.” Still, he said, “I had a bang-up time at Webb.” Dr. Lewis training residents at Hospital Escuela

WOFFORD

lives out his college mission statement; celebrates 30 years at Webb “Be primarily responsible for providing positive outdoor experiences, the more wilderness … the better, and specialize in youth ... .” Brian Wofford is doing exactly what he intended to do when he wrote that mission statement as a college senior. He may not have known where or how it would come to fruition, but he had a plan and began working it. The result has been a 30-year career at Webb instilling leadership, confidence, team work, grit and a host of life and outdoor skills in students. He estimates that he has led more than 570 camping, canoeing, hiking, backpacking and whitewater rafting trips during his tenure. His favorite outdoor destinations are Minnesota, Utah, the Appalachian Trail and the Hiwassee River. Wofford, a Chattanooga native, graduated from the University of Tennessee Knoxville and earned his master’s degree at Southern Adventist University in Chattanooga. His first two jobs after college were outdoor-related helping him to hone his plans. He arrived at Webb on June 3, 1985, as a 30-year-old after being hired as an outdoor program director by Headmaster Jack Heffner. “It met my mission statement exactly and let me do what I wanted to do,” he said. “The headmaster gave me the rope and let me run with it … .” He added, “The first couple of years were difficult. The program had dwindled somewhat. I told Ruth (his wife) we’d stay two years and no more than five.” Brian explained that during the third year the program was more successful, and there were 25 trips.

The couple also lived in a faculty house part of the time their daughters, Amanda ’09 and Brianna ’11, were Webb students. He credits Webb with giving their daughters a “wonderful education and wonderful exposure.” He added, “Serving as Honor Council

Brian fondly recalls “Wonderful Wednesdays” and the weekend, spring break and summer school activities. But it is the relationships and bonds created with students that are most meaningful to him. “It wasn’t long before I felt like I was making a difference. I could tell I was having an impact.” Fulfilling his mission statement may have brought him to Webb, but once a number of those meaningful years were strung together, he had his reason to stay. “We (with Ruth) embraced what was going on, and the school embraced us. “I’m just a little part of the magic of this outdoor program,” he said, noting that the outdoors is the main attraction. “There’s also something magical about putting everything that you think you need in a backpack and existing with it.” He added, “The hardships that are part of the program have a bonding and cathartic affect. Building on success in the outdoors can be transferred to other areas of life. It’s a good tool to use – one more asset that makes the Webb experience stronger. What we’re teaching our students is as relevant and timely as ever.” And, there are some very basic skills and lessons to be learned. “It’s important for a student to realize what happens when he’s in charge of the peanut butter and he forgets it, or a student does not pack correctly, and others have to lend clothing. “We need every piece of the puzzle working.” So far this year, with the help of Teddy Schaffer, Joe Griggs ’05, Karla Vogt and Mike Quinn, all Webb teachers, there have been 14 trips — more than ever before and with more students participating. The longtime outdoorsman has confidence in the future of the program but added that it will require “someone really dedicated who will give it the energy and the push that it needs.” And Wofford is a firm believer in Senior Survival, a tradition that provides each class with a final high school bond. “It’s an appropriate way to give our students closure for this experience that has been The Webb School.”

In his early days at Webb, he worked with the director of activities, who mainly designed programs for 250 boarding students. During these years, he helped with afternoon and weekend activities, and assisted with Webb’s summer schools. Wofford also worked with the school’s Rotary Interact Club, taught 7th grade science, and he served as dorm parent in Rand and Cooper-Farris, both boys’ dorms at the time. Ruth has helped him and been at his side during his time at Webb, making countless trips with him. She currently serves as the Middle School study hall proctor.

Excitement "builds" as Student Center nears completion Formal dedication for Residential Village - two dormitories and student center - set for April 29 Webb’s Residential Village Phase I construction project – a student center and two 20-bed dorms with attached faculty residences – has moved quickly during the fall. Weekly website photos have depicted the steady progress. The student center will be ready when students return from the holiday break, and the dorms will be completed before fall 2016! The buildings are centrally located between the Administration Building and the Frank G. Barton Jr. Athletic Center. A November groundbreaking ceremony set the project in motion, and construction began in January 2015. The dorms will help provide capacity to meet the 2012-2017 Strategic Plan vision of 150 boarding students by 2022.

By Julie Harris ‘95, Director of Admissions Growing up in Hawaii, I quickly learned how important ’ohana is. It is a word that every local knows and understands. As you can imagine, I was thrilled when our student council at Webb created the theme for spirit week, “Webb is ’ohana. ’Ohana is family.” The Webb School is a special place, a place where classmates and faculty become family. I truly believe that Webb is a family, and our alumni are certainly a part of that family. As an alumna, I believe that one of the best ways to give back to Webb is to send your children or grandchildren to Webb. I know I am already looking forward to the day when my daughter, Lily, will be ordering uniforms and preparing for her first day at Webb. I believe that education is one of the most important gifts we can give our children, and I feel so blessed that I have the option of sending my children to such an outstanding school.

We are particularly excited when family members of Webb alumni join our community. In recent years, we have seen an

Trap and Skeet field to be named in memory of Lt. Cmdr. Alan A. Patterson ’96 A special event is planned during the 2016 Reunion to commemorate the naming of the Webb Trap and Skeet field in memory of Lt. Cmdr. Alan A. Patterson, USN, by his parents, Drs. Phillip and Teresa Patterson. The Pattersons’ generous gift will be used to create an endowment that will fund annual activities of the Trap and Skeet program at Webb. On April 30, 2016, in conjunction with Reunion Weekend and Alan’s 20th graduation anniversary, family members and the Webb community will gather for the ceremony. “At age 4, Alan shot his first clay targets stacked on a fence holding the gun over my shoulder,” said Dr. Phillip Patterson. “By age 9, he was carrying a small, lightweight shotgun into the field and killed his first quail. Shortly after, he received his hunter safety card, and he was hooked.” He added, “He was very passionate about trap, skeet and hunting. If you visited Alan while he was in the Navy during the hunting season, he would have you in a cornfield shooting pheasants, in a duck blind going after waterfowl or following a dog hunting quail. If all seasons were closed, you’d be at a gun club shooting clays.” The entire Patterson family would like to continue the opportunities for the Webb community to develop these skills and passions. “Improving the trap and skeet facility expands Webb’s ability to offer the newcomer an opportunity to discover the shooting sports,” said Dr. Patterson.

Fall-Winter 2015-2016

The Pattersons of Tullahoma, Tenn., have been associated with The Webb School for more than 20 years. In addition to Alan ’96, they also sent Craig ’98 and Joey ’99 to Webb, and Dr. Phillip Patterson served on the Board of Trustees from 1997-2003.

Excerpts from the April 23, 2013, Memorial Service Program at the United States Naval Academy Chapel, Annapolis, Md. Lt. Cmdr. Alan A. Patterson, call-sign “Dink Dink,” USN, 34, died on March 11, 2013, when his EA-6B Prowler Naval Aircraft crashed during a training flight in Washington State. A memorial service was conducted on April 23, 2013, at the United States Naval Academy Chapel, Annapolis, Md. He is survived by his wife, Denise Schabaner Patterson, his daughters, Emma Grace and Annsley Gillian, his parents, his sisters, Jessica and Melissa, and brother, Phillip, in addition to Craig and Joey. Alan was a 2000 Naval Academy graduate with a bachelor’s degree in history and a minor in French and also earned a master’s degree in national security and strategic study at the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, R.I. Following his commissioning, he reported to Pensacola Naval Air Station, Fla., for flight training. He was designated a naval flight officer in April 2002, and was selected for follow-on training in the EA-6B Prowler, VAQ-129 at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station. After completion of Fleet Replacement ECMO (electronic countermeasures officers) training, Alan reported to the “Shadowhawks”, VAQ-141 and was the senior Lieutenant, aircraft division officer and assistant operations officer and deployed onboard USS Theodore Roosevelt in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF).

At Webb, Alan was a member of the National Honor Society, Cum Laude Society, the Honor Council and played soccer and was a member of Webb’s first lacrosse team and won the coach’s award his junior and senior years. He received the Book award for French his last three years at Webb. During this time, he also pursued his interest in playing cello, was a Boy Scout and enjoyed snow skiing. He graduated Summa Cum Laude. Years of family skeet and trap shooting earned him a place on both the Webb and United States Naval Academy shooting teams. His concentration and timing earned him a silver medal in the USNA All Military Shoot.

In August of 2006, he reported for his EA-6B Prowler Fleet Replacement Squadron Instructor tour and was a carrier qualification ECMO, the crew resource management program coordinator, and Naval Air Training and Operating Procedures Standardization (NATOPS) program instructor in addition to EA-6B systems instructor, schedules officer, student control officer and fleet accessions officer.

“Webb is so grateful for this wonderful contribution made by the Patterson family. We are honored to be able to name the trap and skeet field for Alan. Alan and his family have been enthusiastic supporters of Webb’s clay target program, and we look forward to a strong program for years to come,” said Matt Wilson, Director of Alumni and Development.

Alan joined Carrier Air Wing 7 staff in November 2009 during workups for deployment operations. In January 2010, he deployed in support of Operation

Named after Aldo Leopold, the Leopold Conservation Award is presented by the Sand County Foundation in conjunction with the Kentucky Agricultural Council. In his book, A Sand County Almanac, Leopold advocated for an ethical relationship between people and the land they manage. The Leopold Conservation Award is presented to a private landowner who exemplifies the spirit of this land ethic. Honoring an individual or a family dedicated to leaving their land better than they found it, the Leopold Conservation Award was created to recognize extraordinary achievement in voluntary conservation; inspire other landowners through their example; and help the general public understand the vital role private landowners can and do play in conservation success.

I have been working for the last 25 years as a contractor supporting DoD in the areas of aircraft maintenance and component redesign. For the past 10 years, I have also owned a banking / financing company that provides lines of credit to businesses around the country. This company, Pivotal Funding Group, has now grown to the point where it takes up much of my work time. Some of my free time is taken up these days by being on a San Antonio school board. This school district has about 21,000 students and is a very fast growth district, adding another 1,000 a year. It is exciting making decisions that affect student learning and preparing them for college. I am looking forward to coming back to Webb to visit soon and seeing what everyone has been up to.” Jim Pfaff ’83, Bloomington, Ind., writes: “I am living in Indiana running my business, Innovative Research and Data Solutions, LLC. I am also a candidate for Congress in Indiana’s 9th Congressional District. At the beginning of 2011, I was honored to take the position of Chief of Staff for Congressman Tim Huelskamp of the First District of Kansas. I have given up the radio show and have put my business on hiatus while I serve the Congressman.”

2000s Ryan York '03 - RePublic Schools is a network of free public charter schools that are reimagining public education in the south. In 2014 RePublic promised to provide computer science as a core academic subject to all students and hired Ryan York to write the curriculum. Ryan had been teaching math at Apollo Middle School for three years and was also working after-hours as a software developer. RePublic's computer science curriculum is now being taught to more than 1,500 students across Mississippi, Tennessee, and Texas. When Thomas Cato, the former CIO of HCA healthcare and father of a RePublic board member passed away in fall of 2014 his family asked that in lieu of flowers people donate to create a community computer science center. The facility was set to be built inside RePublic's high school. Ryan was asked to help design both the facility and programming offered. During the past year, Ryan has worked with several business leaders and pioneers in technology to create a facility where any child in Nashville can learn computer science free of charge. The facility opened Nov. 17, and programming begins in January. Initial courses include AP computer science, graphic/website design, video game development, and videography. RePublic currently operates 3 middle schools and 1 high school in Nashville along with the first charter school in the state of Mississippi. Ryan currently works as the organization’s CIO overseeing in-house software development and data analysis, the IT department, and the computer science curriculum. He also serves as the principal of the Nashville Academy of Computer Science, one of RePublic’s middle schools in Tennessee.

Annual Report of Gifts and Donors

Letter from the Chairman, Board of Trustees August 2015 Dear Webb Friends, On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I thank everyone in the Webb Community for your support during the past year. Webb School is prospering in so many positive ways. You, as donors, are continuing to help grow Webb's legacy. This year, alumni, parents, grandparents, faculty, staff and friends of the school provided funds that have enabled the school to make distinct improvements of which I am very proud.

I would like to extend special thanks to Bill Hardin ’79 for his work the past two years as Webb Fund chairman. The results have been excellent, and he has set the bar very high for that position in the future. I extend congratulations to Bill and his entire family, including his daughter Josephine, Webb class of 2015. Well done!

Recognizing the many donors who have supported Webb during the past fiscal year (July 1, 2014-June 30, 2015), this Annual Report is included in The Webb Magazine fall/winter issue. The magazine stories and photos showcase Webb’s progress and new initiatives alongside its history and traditions. From academics to technology, to capital projects to overall financial stability, Webb is continuing to fulfill its mission. I encourage you to please celebrate with me the results of Webb’s philanthropic support: The Webb Fund received more than $504,000 in gifts from 665 donors. These gifts provide critical support to ongoing operational needs and allow Webb to enhance educational opportunities. Gifts were also made to the endowment, for capital projects and other specific initiatives. These special gifts, when added to The Webb Fund, totaled more than $2 million in cash and pledge payments.

There is much excitement on campus about the Residential Village – a new Student Center slated to open this winter and two new 20-bed dormitories that will be ready for August 2016. Be sure to follow the progress through photos online at www.thewebbschool. com. Support of this project by our generous donors continues to exemplify Webb’s hallmark of philanthropy. This past year was my fourth and last year as Chairman of the Board of Trustees. I plan to stay on the board, and the Board of Trustees and I are proud to have John Sawyer ’88 as our new Chairman of The Webb School Board. He is going to help steer Webb in a brilliant direction, and I am so glad to have had the privilege to serve Webb. I hope you enjoy reading this year's annual report and will share it with your friends. It reflects all that you -- our believers and supporters -- do to sustain the Webb School experience!!! Sincerely yours, George E. Pine ’68 Chairman, Board of Trustees (2011-2015)

Alumni Gifts

Webb alumni generously gave to Webb this past year, supporting the annual fund, contributing to capital projects, and growing the endowment. These gifts assist almost every area across the school, and continue a cycle of giving whereby current students, faculty, and staff benefit from those who have come before them. Alumni listed below have made cash gifts to one or more areas of the school during the fiscal year. The top five classes based on giving percentage are listed at the end of the report, along with the overall alumni giving percentage and total dollars received. Class giving percentages are calculated as follows: The numerator includes all alumni who made a gift. The denominator includes all active alumni of a given class who graduated from Webb.
