The Webb School to construct $5.7 million Residential Village

The Webb School broke ground on Nov. 7 for a $5.7 million Residential Village project -- two dorms and a student center -following the fall Board of Trustees meeting on campus. Construction is slated to begin on Jan. 12, 2015. The student center will open in January, 2016, and the dorms will open in August, 2016.

Tom Lisenby ’47, trustee emeritus, wrote this about his dad in conjunction with a gift he has made to help fund the new dormitories. The gift honors John Blackard Lisenby ’10 (1890-1955).

The Webb School has taken a bold step in addressing the issue of affordability facing private education by cutting the cost of its boarding tuition for families in Tennessee and its 8 contiguous states.

Hugh Eldredge came to Webb from Annapolis, Md., in September 1946. His family, stationed in Maryland with the Navy, had heard much of The Webb School from their relatives and friends in Memphis, Tenn. Among them was Frank Gilliland Sr. ’08, his uncle and Chairman of the Board of Trustees.

“Character of Home” is a tagline that was created for Webb several years ago. We like its representation of Webb so much that we have paid for this to be a registered trademark of the school. We speak of character often at Webb – in chapel, in advisor groups, and in casual conversations throughout campus. Character permeates the Webb campus. As you will read in the magazine, we broke ground on Nov. 7 to build Phase I of our Student Commons/Residential Village project. Phase I consists of a Student Center and two new dormitories. This is the largest building project ever for The Webb School. These new buildings will support the “Character of Home” by providing students with common spaces to interact with each other and with the residential and day faculty, creating bonds that will last a lifetime. Many years ago, prominent educator Ted Sizer spoke to the faculty at Brooks School in Massachusetts. One statement that he made has stuck with me for more than 30 years – “Boarding Schools cannot be Day Schools with hotels.” His point was that schools need to provide a “second curriculum” for boarding students. Some of that second curriculum is organic. Students and residential faculty have frequent conversations during which ideas are exchanged, academic help is provided, and “life lessons” are provided. In addition to the organic part of the curriculum, Webb is embarking on a new path for a second curriculum. In June, The Webb School’s $50,000 grant proposal to the E.E. Ford Foundation was approved. This matching gift challenge grant will help us enhance leadership development at Webb through our new Fostering Student Initiative Program. The basic premise of the program is helping our boarding students create effective collaboration, accountability, and critical-thinking skills. This program will give students a better understanding of themselves as group contributors, and they will be more prepared and willing to use those skills at Webb and as graduates. The program meshes the multiple leadership efforts on campus through one curriculum while allowing students and faculty members to expand their working definition of a leader. Each student will be a contributor to a capstone project completed during his or her senior year. We are very excited about this new initiative at Webb. This year we began with the ninth grade boarding students as our first cohort. Next year, it will be ninth and tenth grades, and finally in year four, all four grades of the Upper School will be involved. In time, we may be able to expand this program to interested day students. Developing character while providing a safe environment to learn, explore, and dream is fundamental to Webb. While I can only imagine what Sawney would think of the students today dealing with social media and all of its consequences, I am certain that Sawney would be proud that honor and character remain fundamental to Webb’s mission.

Participants attend sessions from September through May and study topics such as city and county governments, industrial and commercial development, education and health care as they relate to Bedford County.

39 Seniors receive blazers, continuing Webb tradition The 39 seniors in The Class of 2015 participated in Blazer Day (one of many traditions) Nov. 11, as they received their senior blazers in a special chapel ceremony. The presentation is scheduled annually on or near the birthday of founder, W. R. “Sawney” Webb, who was born on Nov. 11, 1842. Marking the Blazer Day ceremony, Lt. Samuel D. Kennedy ’02, was the keynote speaker. As seniors continued the longtime Blazer Day tradition, the class members also had the opportunity to ring the bell that once stood at the original school in Culleoka, Tenn., where Sawney Webb and brother, John Webb, began their classes.

Students attend YOUTH TO YOUTH drug prevention, youth leadership program A group of students from Webb recently attended a YOUTH TO YOUTH drug prevention and youth leadership program conference at the University of Rhode Island in Kingston. McKenna Hoover ’15, Manchester; Will Watson ’15, Shelbyville; and Lauren Livengood ’15, Grand Blanc, Mich.; Mason Fizer ’16, Louisville, Ky.; and sophomore, Ronnie Booth ’17, Trussville, Ala.; were the Webb participants at the conference. Hoover served as part of the conference staff. “I always look forward to seeing the students have fun at this conference while obtaining valuable lessons, experience, and training that they can then bring back to Webb and implement through our Feet to Feet program,” said Mike Quinn, Webb art teacher and faculty advisor for Feet to Feet, the school’s version of YOUTH TO YOUTH.

Hoover agrees that the YOUTH TO YOUTH conference allows Webb students to make the Feet to Feet program better while also allowing them to meet new people and learn new abilities. She added that YOUTH TO YOUTH provides new information and energy to bring back to the Webb community in order to spread the “drug-free fun” message. “The conference is an amazing experience that I would not trade for anything; I am always looking forward to it, and it is one of my

favorite parts of summer,” she said. “I have met amazing people from all over the country and watched us come together for a great cause, and that’s an incredible thing that I have never seen anywhere else.” According to the YOUTH TO YOUTH website, the organization was founded in 1982 in Columbus, Ohio, as a community-based drug prevention and youth leadership program focusing primarily on middle school and high school students. The goal of its many projects is harnessing the powerful influence of peer pressure -making it a positive force that encourages young people to live free of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs.

Fee attends U.S. Naval Academy Counselor Fly-in

“I have a sincere and deep admiration for the midshipmen of the United States Naval Academy and after my visit feel at ease knowing these extraordinary young men and women are positioned to be the next leaders of our nation,” said Fee. “The hands-on instruction the midshipmen receive, especially in STEM-related fields, is above and beyond anything I have seen and is truly remarkable. From launching satellites into space to developing code to keep a pendulum upright and balanced, these young men and women are truly equipped to go immediately from the classroom to the field."

According to the USNA website, “each year, the USNA hosts educators, community leaders, counselors, and others in positions of responsibility who interact with our nation’s best and brightest middle and high school students. The fly-in is designed to showcase the opportunities available at USNA.

Lari White performs at WSPA Auction; online auction added The Webb School Parents’ Association hosted a “Starry Night” cocktail party and annual auction in September. Lari White Cannon, an award-winning recording artist, hit songwriter and producer, indie record label owner, and actress, performed during the event. White’s music has earned three Grammys, and she’s had songs cut by Tammy Wynette, Toby Keith, and Lonestar. The WSPA auction was chaired by Ashley Segroves (Gavin ’16, Gwyneth ’19). The auction is the main fundraiser for the parents’ association each year. The WSPA sponsors a host of projects every year, including annual Christmas bonuses for employees and many other campus improvements. Website to assist AP Physics students is just the beginning Ryan Xia ’17, a boarding student, will not say that he is a strong Advanced Placement Physics student. He will say that he is strong in applying physical theories and physical laws in daily life and real-life experience.

“I am confident in my sense of physics and my knowledge in physics,” said Xia, a 10th grader from Changshu, China, who is in his second year at Webb. “The most important key in learning physics is to have a good sense of science and know how and when to apply theories accurately.”

Xia has channeled his interest in physics into creating a website, his first, (www.ryanapphysicsc. com) to assist other students, provide free response practices and bonus questions with prizes, offer instructional videos, and elicit blogs on topics relating to physics.

ELL teacher participates in TOEFL placement study Daiva Berzinskas, Webb’s English Language Learner teacher, participated in the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) Junior ESL Placement Study during the fall in Princeton, N.J. The objective of this study is to evaluate the use of the TOEFL Junior tests to help schools with decisions about English language support for students who speak English as a Second Language (ESL), according to the Educational Testing Service website.

Strings, choir give fall performances

Curtis, Fiala join peers at National Young Leaders Conference Juniors Anna Kate Curtis ’16 of Christiana, Tenn., and Austin Fiala ’16 of Tullahoma, Tenn., attended the National Young Leaders Conference (NYLC): Skills in Leadership for Change, a seven-day Envision program for high school students in Washington, D.C. The program is open to students throughout the nation and included a career fair, networking social and interactive workshops, interaction with members of Congress, and information about working on Capitol Hill in the Senate Page Program or as a Congressional intern. Curtis and Fiala also participated in an exclusive Press Panel with Washington journalists who cover critical topics such as the Pentagon, election campaigns, Capitol Hill and special undercover stories. They were challenged to use their leadership, conflict resolution, networking and other skills as part of The Envision Initiative: Igniting Community Change, a social advocacy project. Participation in the conference made them eligible to receive college credit from George Mason University.

“By extending our classroom beyond the boundaries of our campus, field studies give our students and advisors a shared opportunity to get to know each other better and to share a common experience,” said Angela Rasnick, director of studies. She added that they broaden Webb's curriculum. “I think that the field studies experiences enhance our curriculum and extend many areas of our curriculum into the larger world.”

Two students recently complete "Grow-a-Row" project for Second Harvest Food Pantry Senior Matthew Cooper ’15, Andrew Cooper ’16, and their friend Braxton Pugh planted 1,000 feet of potatoes in mid-March. After spending four months cultivating the plants, they harvested 1,100 pounds of potatoes and donated them to the food pantry on July 17.

“Although hunger in third-world countries receives a lot of media attention, lots of people don’t realize that there are many suffering from hunger right here in America,” Matthew said. “Andrew, Braxton, and I wanted to do something to fight hunger in our own community. We hope that this project will encourage other people to donate home-grown produce to their local food pantries, too.”

Jim Sherwood ’16 of Smithville, Tenn., attended Space Camp at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, home of Space Camp and NASA’s official Visitor Information Center for Marshall Space Flight Center, during the summer. The weeklong educational program promotes science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), while training students and adults with hands-on activities and missions based on team work, leadership and decision-making. Sherwood successfully completed the requirements and earned an engineering college credit from the University of Alabama, Huntsville. Sherwood was part of the Advanced Space Academy Program, which is specifically designed for high school trainees who have a particular interest in aerospace.

Frere Fund for Faculty Development used to study "Exeter Math" Teddy Schaffer and Karla Vogt recently shared a 2014 grant from the Jon Frere Fund for Faculty Development to learn more about “Exeter Math”, a problem-based approach to math classes. They attended the Anja S. Greer Conference on Mathematics, Science, and Technology at Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, N.H. The Frere fund, which is designed to defray the cost of enrichment opportunities for returning Webb instructors through subsidizing an educational experience, was recently endowed by The James C. Meadows (’52) Foundation. “The Webb Math Department is interested in integrating or adopting the Exeter method, and the conference allowed us to learn the details of the courses, pros and cons of implementation, and meet the teachers who have written the texts,” said Schaffer.

New residential program to develop leadership, character Ninth graders in the “Fostering Student Initiative" program are completing the first semester of a new curriculum model that eventually will include students in grades 9-12. The program goal is to enhance the boarding experience of upper school residential students, to strengthen and promote leadership projects throughout the student body, and to help the school continue to prepare students to be confident and effective contributors in their communities. The program is being directed by James Garcia, dean of students/director of residential life; Jamison Fee, director of college counseling; Dr. Jackie Chapman, school psychologist; and Kelly Northrup, Latin teacher.

score was 59.7 percent, and the worldwide score, 61.3 percent. Additionally, Webb students had an 82 percent pass rate on all exams taken.

The students’ recognition is based on their spring 2014 AP exam scores. Eighty-five Webb students took a total of 210 AP exams. Webb offers 20 Advanced Placement classes. Jenna Davis, Tullahoma, Tenn.; Dominic DiSanto, Knoxville, Tenn.; Haena Lee, South Korea; and Adam Mansell, Livingston, Tenn.; were named National AP Scholars. They are 2014 Webb graduates. National recognition is granted to all students who receive an average score of at least four (out of 5) on all AP exams taken and scores of four or higher on eight or more of these exams. Lee took 12 AP exams with an average score of 4.42. Mansell took 11 exams and had a 4.91 average score. DiSanto took nine exams with a 4.67 average score. Davis took 10 exams and had a 4.50 average score. Sixteen students claimed AP Scholar with Distinction honors (including those with national recognition), 10 students achieved AP Scholar with Honor, and 11 were named AP Scholars also based on the number of exams taken and the scores.

“Thus far in the program the students have been able to identify their personality types on a Myers-Briggs-type matrix, exploring both the possibilities and limitations offered by their personal indicator. We have also researched different 'types' of leaders and are in the process of finalizing a speaker to come to Webb in early January,” said Fee.

A $50,000 matching grant from the Edward E. Ford Foundation was approved in June to help fund the program. The grant requires Webb to raise $1 for $1 in matching gifts before July 31, 2015, and $42,000 had been received as of Dec. 1. Webb has a strong history with the E.E. Ford Foundation, receiving a total of $180,000 from six previous matching grants.

Matthew Cooper ’15 of Smithville, Tenn., was named a National Merit Scholarship Program Semifinalist. Cooper is among the top 1 percent of 2014-15 U.S. high school seniors to achieve the semifinalist distinction. A total of 16,000 semifinalists were named for the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program. They are eligible to continue in the competition and to vie for 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth approximately $33 million that will be offered next spring. Holiday Live Radio Play is fall production “It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play” was presented by the Webb Players in the Black Box Studio Theatre in November. Ruth Cordell, Webb speech and theatre teacher, directed the production. Guest artists, Robert Kiefer and Carol Ponder, were co-director and advisor. The American classic, which was first shown in 1946, was based on the short story “The Greatest Gift” by Philip Van Doren Stern, published in 1945. The setting of the play was a 1940s radio station, as if the actors were recording the story for a radio audience. Actors were in period costume and makeup, and they performed on stage for a live audience.

It is not often students get to take their community service skills to the next level, but for Doobee Tarhule ’17 this was accomplished by traveling to the countries of Laos and Thailand through an organization known as Rustic Pathways. An organization committed to supporting global service in a variety of programs, Rustic Pathways allowed Tarhule to travel abroad and hone her skills Doobee Tarhule ’17 in animal and wildlife conservation as well as education by spending one week in each destination. A resident of Norman, Okla., Tarhule is no stranger to both domestic and international travel; however, her very first trip to the Asian continent was one marked by a new appreciation of diversity through devoted service.

Webb students receive real-world view of careers in medical fields Elizabeth ’16 and Hannah Reavis ’16 of Manchester, Tenn., are interested in careers in the medical field and received real-world experience as participants in the National Youth Leadership Forum/ Careers in Medicine at Emory University in Atlanta during the summer. The weeklong NYLF program was structured with student groups each led by a faculty advisor. There were hands-on activities, a wide range of classes to take, and opportunities to talk with residents and other professionals about their experiences in the medical field.

Garcia fulfilling career dream Family forging strong relationships By Rita Mitchell, director of communications When James Garcia graduated from college in 2000, he needed a job. What he received was actually a lifestyle at Webb that focused on strong academics blended with homelife, friendships and sports. Currently dean of students and director of residential life, he is also a seventh grade English teacher, Middle School boys’ basketball head coach and an advisor for a new student leadership initiative. Through the years, he has coached softball, and served as a dorm head, assistant athletic director and assistant middle school director. In August, Garcia received The Webb School Parents’ Association 2014 Faculty Enrichment Award, presented annually to an outstanding member of the teaching faculty with students and families casting votes to select the recipient. He is always looking for professional development opportunities and recently completed the National Association of Independent Schools Aspiring Heads of School Program.

Garcia was a high school junior when he decided that he wanted a career working with youth. A chemistry teacher suggested that he pursue a degree in education. His first career decision was between Webb and another private school in Florida. “I chose Webb because I really liked the campus. It reminded me a lot of my college campus in Vermont,” said Garcia. “Webb also gave me a tremendous opportunity to get involved in many areas of the school.” And while it was Webb’s campus that attracted Garcia, it was his future wife that kept him here. “After my eighth year at Webb I was considering other options, but then I met Mallory when she came to work here, and the rest is history. At Webb I have always been able to do what I love within a great community, and it would be hard to replicate that at another school.” The Garcias married in 2010 and now have two children, Cadence, 2, and Asher, 6 months.

Garcia knows that the extra interaction with students because he resides on campus impacts teaching and administrative posts. “As a teacher, I feel like being on campus has given me insight into the workload that our students have in the evenings and has made me more sensitive to their needs. As an administrator, I feel that getting to see me outside the school day allows students to see me in a different light, which is important as the dean of students.”

Even though Garcia has assumed more administrative roles in recent years, he said he is not afraid to experiment with different methods as a teacher. He also believes in bringing a lot of enthusiasm into the classroom. “I think if students know you want to be there it helps them stay engaged. I also try to keep my classroom fast-paced and use every minute of class time that I can.” Many aspects of education have changed since he began teaching. With ever-evolving technology, he explained, Webb faculty members are teaching a different type of student than they were 15 years ago. They have to continue to determine the best way to reach them. “All in all the students at Webb have consistently been eager to learn.” The longtime educator is a proponent of putting an increased importance on the fine arts program and is glad Webb added football four years ago. “Being heavily involved in music in high school, I love that our students have an outlet for their creativity, and to have 30-40 boys participating in football is wonderful to see.” Thinking about Webb’s future, Garcia said, “The new Residential Village and increased student population will require increased dorm staffing, and with that, more responsibility in terms of supervising the residential program.” He added, “I think Webb will have to find ways to make the Webb experience affordable. That will mean an increase in financial aid and an increase in giving.” Finally, he said, “Webb will need to continue to enhance the character building 'hidden curriculum' that it includes. A lot of families I speak with love that aspect of The Webb School.”

It’s all about relationships,” he explained. “Living on campus has helped me foster some of the closest relationships in my life. Whether it be day or boarding students, the students that are around in the afternoons and the evenings are the ones that I have become closest to.” He added, “Mallory taught here for five years, and even though she is a stay-at-home mom now for our children, she is still able to remain close to the students. Some of Cadence’s favorite people are the students she sees daily in the dining hall.”

He added, “Above all else I strive to be supportive of our students, whether it be through attendance at their games and performances, or by helping them learn from mistakes that they have made.”

In the past five years, Webb has made improvements to Chambliss dorm, and added the Turner House (a faculty residence) to CooperFarris dorm. “And now, the beginning of the Residential Village will become a reality.” The two 20-person dorms, one each for boys and girls, and the student center will be located adjacent to the Frank G. From our humble beginnings, when Sawney Webb spent more money on books than on buildings, Webb has always been focused on the students and their education. However, these beautiful buildings will enhance our residential program, creating great spaces for students to gather, to learn, and to grow. Additionally, we cannot grow our boarding population without them, as we are almost at capacity, and we will likely fill the present dorms next year.”

The Webb School broke ground on Nov. 7 for a $5.7 million Residential Village project -- two dorms and a student center -- following the fall Board of Trustees meeting on campus. Construction is slated to begin on Jan. 12, 2015. The student center will open in January, 2016, and the dorms will open in August, 2016.

Broadhead thanked the Building and Grounds Committee for its work on this project and the many donors who have already committed to the residential village, especially The James R. Meadows Jr. Foundation, which has pledged a naming gift for one of the dormitories.

Editor’s note: Tom Lisenby ’47, trustee emeritus, wrote this about his dad in conjunction with a gift he has made to help fund the new dormitories. The gift honors John Blackard Lisenby ’10 (1890-1955).

After he graduated in 1910, John completed a year of college at Tennessee State Teachers College in Murfreesboro, Tenn. Then he transferred to Louisiana State Normal in Natchitoches, La. I don’t know why but I think it had everything to do with baseball.

It is my pleasure to give my personal thoughts about my dad and to express my reasons for giving a memorial gift to The Webb School in loving memory of my father.

In Louisiana one could earn a teachers certificate after two years of college. He did that and was hired as a teacher and as the principal in Ida in northwest Louisiana just south of the Arkansas border.

My dad, John Blackard Lisenby was born in 1890 in Bell Buckle, Tenn. The family, in 1895, moved to Fosterville, Tenn., a short distance down the road from Bell Buckle. My grandfather and great uncle both died of scarlet fever. The very serious epidemic left my dad the sole male survivor of his family. My grandmother became a widow. Dad had four surviving sisters. Through the kindness and generosity of Fount Brothers of Fosterville, the family lived on the farm owned by Mr. Brothers.

It was from this place that he went to the army for WWI. He did not have to go because he was the sole surviving son and sole support of his mother. He wanted to go because he didn’t want to miss the adventure.

The education of the family began in a one-room school house on the farm. My dad grew up on the farm and worked hard and long hours. As a reward for his hard work, dad was given a colt to raise and ride on the farm. One day my dad saw a neighborhood bully throwing rocks at the colt. Dad was small, wiry and tough and asked the young man to stop throwing the rocks at the colt. The rock throwing stopped after John Lisenby boxed the young man’s nose. Blood was spattered all over the bully’s face.

He became a member of a large medical unit in Blois, France. They occupied the campus of a large Catholic Church, school and hospital. He served as a non-medical assistant to a group of doctors assisting with tasks that they assigned. Frequently he donned a large chef ’s hat and cooked a meal for them as they got off work.

“I am pleased to honor him and The Webb School in this way, and am fortunate to be his son. It is my hope that the young people who will enter this edifice keep Noli Res Subdole Facere forever in their hearts.”

Dad finished his studies at the one-room school, and his teacher encouraged him to continue to further his education goals. His teacher was resourceful and contacted The Webb School. After several days passed, correspondence was exchanged, and John was told to catch the train and pursue education matters at the school.

John performed farm chores in exchange for four years as a student at Webb. He took the required four years of Latin, two years of Greek and all the math Webb School offered. John Webb was my father’s favorite teacher.

After the war he continued teaching and attending Louisiana State University summer school each year.

In 1920 he married Nita Oden of Shreveport, La. Years before she had asked about the “B” initial in his name. Having spent time around Nashville he thought that Belmont was more impressive than Blackard. He was kidding and forgot all about it. He was surprised to find on their wedding invitation that the groom’s name was John Belmont Lisenby. I was born in 1930. In 1932 I accompanied my parents to live in Baton Rouge while my father completed a master’s degree in education. I returned a few years later and received my own degree. John Lisenby loved to teach and he loved to learn. When LSU started offering extension courses he was the first person to complete one, earning an A. He spent about 20 years as principal of Pine Grove High School in Louisiana, and many of his former students spent their lives in the education field. His was a life well lived and a life that guided and inspired others. I left my dad’s school to go to Webb, following in his footsteps, graduating in 1947. I am pleased to honor him and The Webb School in this way, and am fortunate to be his son. It is my hope that the young people who will enter this edifice keep Noli Res Subdole Facere forever in their hearts.

One interesting assignment that John was given was to drive a huge wagon load of supplies to the site of the Webb summer camp. The wagon was pulled by a double team of horses. When crossing over a stream on a wooden bridge the horses became frightened. They baulked and starting backing up. When one rear wheel got over the edge of the bridge, John jumped down from the wagon, ran to the lead horses, talking to them and pulling the bridles at the bits. He coaxed them forward over the bridge. I don’t think this scene had appeared in a John Wayne movie in 1908.

He became friends with one of the priests at the hospital complex, and they exchanged languages, French for English and English for French. His four years of Webb School Latin was most helpful in this regard. He became so proficient in French that he taught it in later years.

The Class of 1956 honors classmate, the Rev. Nat Long, establishes endowed scholarship

The Class of 1956 has spearheaded an effort to establish a scholarship honoring the memory of the Rev. Nat Long. In 2014, donors to the fund have already contributed more than $50,000 in cash and pledges for an endowment, in addition to the $50,000 that was given in his memory since Nat died in 2006. The campaign is being led by several classmates - Steve Herring, Raford Hulan, Bill Lassiter, and Pick Stephens; along with Rev. Long’s widow, Mary Catherine Harwell Long.

“Nat, a scholarship recipient himself, took advantage of all that Webb had to offer, and was an inspiration to us,” said Bill Lassiter ’56. “In 2006, at our 50th reunion, Nat suggested establishing a scholarship at Webb. Sadly, he died just a few days after our reunion. I am so pleased that the class of 1956 and friends of Nat have joined to create and complete this scholarship in his memory.” A native of Atlanta, Nat attended Webb for four years, graduating in 1956. As a freshman, he showed promise, winning the annual oratorical contest in 1953. He was the first freshman to ever win this coveted award, and soon it earned him the nickname of “Preacher.” “Many people do not know how hard Nat had to work at Webb and throughout his life to achieve all that he did. He had a mild form

of cerebral palsy which caused lifelong hand tremors. He struggled to write legibly, but could not take notes rapidly. With his teachers’ permission, he sought out a top student in each class to obtain notes to study. This method continued through all of his advanced studies,” said Mrs. Long, his widow. He went on to earn a B.A. in history from Emory University, and was elected President of the Student Body and President of the College Council. He earned the Bachelor and Master of Divinity from Drew University (Cum Laude), the Master of Sacred Theology (Homiletics) from Yale Divinity School, and the Doctor of Ministry from Candler School of Theology. In the early 1960s, Nat was ordained a Methodist Minister in the North Georgia Conference. He married, had two sons, served nine United Methodist churches in the Atlanta area for more than 40 years, and was appointed a District Superintendent. Much loved by his congregations, he was known for his dynamic preaching.

“Our families have known each other and been close since the 1940s,” said Charles P. “Pick” Stephens, Webb ’56. Both my brother Blair (Webb ’53) and I were members of Peachtree Road United Methodist Church when Nat’s father was the senior minister. Nat was a true friend, he was always there for you, in thick and thin, in good times and bad.” “Webb is fortunate to have a scholarship being named in the memory of the Rev. Nat Long,” said Matt Wilson, member of Webb’s Office of A&D, who helped coordinate the campaign. “It is a tribute to Nat’s life and all that he accomplished.” The target date for the first award of “The Rev. Nat Long, Class of 1956, Memorial Scholarship” is fall 2016 - - once funding is complete. Class of 1974 focuses on Norvell Endowed Fund for Teaching Excellence The Class of 1974, with the leadership of Dr. David Ellis, recently enhanced efforts to fully endow The Rusty and Flo Ann Norvell Endowed Fund for Teaching Excellence that was created in 2011 with an initial gift by Judge Scott Crichton ’72. The fund was established to honor the Norvells for their many contributions to Webb and to help in the retention of its best teachers. It recognizes teaching distinction and will provide a stipend for faculty enrichment and continuing education. Once funding is complete, the head of school and dean of faculty will choose the faculty recipient and make the award in the spring.

Endowing a fund for faculty professional development at Webb requires a minimum endowment of $50,000. The original endowment is never spent. Instead, the funds are invested and a portion of the earnings is used each year to award to a faculty member.

Russel “Rusty” Norvell ’47 and his wife, Flo Ann, exemplify Webb’s legacy of excellence in teaching. From 1969 to 1974, Mr. and Mrs. Norvell devoted their time to Webb students. Rusty Norvell taught sophomore, junior and elective English, and Mrs. Norvell taught freshman English and art. They also initiated peer mentoring and created a student antidrug research and speaking group that spoke to students throughout the South about the dangers of drug use.

The family has a long history at Webb. Mr. Norvell’s grandfather, John R. Simpson, was a 1903 graduate; his uncle, Oscar Simpson, graduated in 1930; Mr. Norvell attended the school for four years in the 1940s; and his son, Cove, received his Webb Bible in 1973. Mr. Norvell passed away in 2008 at the age of 77. Mrs. Norvell preceded him in death in 2005. Cove Norvell survives his parents; he resides in Normandy, Tenn., with his wife, Lorraine Ardaiz, and daughter (Elizabeth ’14).

Webb decreases boarding tuition to promote residential program

The Webb School has taken a bold step in addressing the issue of affordability facing private education by cutting the cost of its boarding tuition for families in the Southeast. The boarding tuition for the 2014-2015 school year of $41,900 has been reduced to $35,000 for residents of Tennessee and its eight contiguous states. Webb alumni also can benefit from an additional $5,000 Legacy Scholarship, lowering boarding tuition to $30,000. There are 36 boarding students from Tennessee and its contiguous states, who are currently enrolled at Webb, and 14 of them were added this year. Additionally, three local day students chose to take advantage of the new tuition rate by becoming boarders. The new tuition rate gives nearby students the opportunity to take advantage of the

full 7-day boarding program at a cost very similar to the 5-day boarding rate. The 5-day boarding program will eventually be phased out, providing a much better weekend experience for our students. “The special rate made a difference in our decision to enroll Thomas as a boarding student,” said Lora Webb, parent of a 9th grade boarding student from Smithville, Tenn. “Thomas could have commuted as a day student but he wanted to stay at Webb to be more connected to the school and teachers. He uses all the time he can to go to extra help, meet with teachers, and now he is using the gym in the evenings to workout with his teachers,” added Webb. A recent study by The Association of Boarding Schools (TABS) revealed that,

“Almost half of the currently enrolled domestic boarding students attend school in their home state or providence; almost half of the rest enroll in an adjacent state or providence” (TABS Enrollment and Migration of Domestic Boarders Report, 2013). The new Tennessee and contiguous states tuition rate has certainly had a positive impact on Webb’s residential program. We continue to meet our 100-plus boarding enrollment goal while many boarding schools are experiencing a decline in their boarding enrollment. This new tuition rate will also play a vital role in supporting the new Webb Residential Village dorms set to open in the fall of 2016.

Legacy Scholarship: Sending daughter to Webb dream come true for Jenkins ’92 For Curtis Jenkins ’92 enrolling his daughter, Tatiana, at The Webb School was something he had dreamed about. After all, Jenkins, who arrived on the campus from New York City as a 14-year-old boy in 1988, is certain that Webb transformed him into an 18-year-old man well prepared for life. “I would love to say that seeing The Webb School for the first time was like “love at first sight,” but it wasn’t,” he recalled. “My world as I knew it for the past 14 years had been completely shaken and uprooted. I was no longer around honking horns and tall skyscrapers but rather chirping birds and mountain backgrounds.” As the first months passed, he became more comfortable, “but it absolutely took a village,” he said. “My teachers and friends helped me to feel a part of the community while showing me great southern hospitality. Meeting people from various countries, states, and participating in school activities helped to broaden my view on the world.” While Jenkins did not feel challenged at his previous NYC school, he found his match at Webb. “My classes challenged me and my classmates to the point that we had no other choice but to work together to push one another. I felt myself becoming much more of a well-rounded student, developing great study habits, and being focus driven while at Webb.” He added, “My Webb experience not only helped to develop me as a person but it redirected my path in life. I have developed relationships with people from Webb that go far beyond the ordinary high school years. I now use words such as home, family, and friends to describe Webb.” In 2012 his daughter was accepted at Webb, and his dream became a reality. But he not only wanted her to attend Webb, he wanted her to graduate. The dream that began three years ago will culminate in May with her graduation in Webb’s Class of 2015.

As Tatiana makes the most of the final months until graduation, she echoes her father’s sentiments about Webb. “If someone would have told me three years ago that I would go to a boarding school in Bell Buckle, Tenn., that would challenge me in every way possible; allow me to make friends from all over the world; and allow me to form relationships; and connect with teachers in and out of the classroom;

ELDREDGE ’48 Burkhead Society - - “Great Opportunity to Help Others Get a Good Education” By Matt Wilson, director of annual giving and alumni relations Hugh Eldredge came to Webb from Annapolis, Md., in September 1946. His family, stationed in Maryland with the Navy, had heard much of The Webb School from their relatives and friends in Memphis, Tenn. Among them was Frank Gilliland Sr. ’08, his uncle and Chairman of the Board of Trustees. As many did at that time, Hugh made his way by train. He went from Washington to Chattanooga, and then to Bell Buckle. “I had given the porter explicit instructions to waken me at 4:15 in the morning so that I might be ready to leave when the Pullman reached Bell Buckle. I went to sleep confident that he would obey my instructions. Somehow I woke early the next morning. I glanced at my watch and to my horror, the hands read 4:45. The porter told me the train had been forced to detour … and was hours late. I sighed with relief… .” One of the reasons for attending Webb was that his previous high school did not offer a rigorous college Hugh Eldredge in 2014 prep curriculum, and his parents wanted him to have the best education possible. He attended Webb for two years and graduated in 1948.

“I will probably always remember Mr. Webb’s (son Will) lectures and the close companionship I have had … I will also remember the history classes in which I participated under Mr. Dowdy and Latin from Mr. Follin. To thank the people for the service I received at Webb would be too long a list.”

Hugh stayed in Middle Tennessee for college, spending one year (post graduate) at Peabody Demonstration School (now the University School of Nashville) and then matriculating at Vanderbilt University, where his dad coincidentally had secured a teaching appointment in engineering. “Webb has always stood for honor and integrity, and I am very proud of my time on the honor council my senior year. When I left Webb, I noticed immediately the different sense of honor that others had compared to what I had been taught at Webb.” At Vanderbilt Hugh joined the NROTC, and then served two years in the Navy. Following his active duty tour, he went to work. After a short time selling typewriters, he went to Vanderbilt Law

School. Passing the bar, Hugh thought he wanted to go JAG (Judge Advocate General), but was not accepted. He was disappointed with the turn his career had taken. “I drew from a reservoir of experiences I had at Webb, and was able to stay focused and persevere.” He went about getting another job, working for a department store, and becoming top seller. It was this role at the store that helped him successfully apply for a job at the Third National Bank. He began his work in the trust department, and stayed there for more than 20 years. Hugh reflected on the importance of the Burkhead Society, the group he joined in 2010. “When I was a trustee (1979-97, and now emeritus), Webb had just started the Burkhead Society. Many trustees and others have joined, and it has been very exciting to see the growth. By making Webb a beneficiary of one’s estate, it is a great opportunity to help others get a good education.” Today, Hugh enjoys traveling as much as he did when he and his family were with the Navy. A regular passenger on international cruises, he has been all over the world. When asked about his hopes for Webb, he said, “Webb has done a lot of good works, and I hope it continues to get good press, now and in the future.”

Shealy received the award during a special presentation at the NSAA National Convention and Tradeshow earlier this year in Savannah, Ga.

Webb hosted an Alumni Trap and Skeet Shooters event in the fall with approximately 20 shooters on campus to meet and greet Friday night and then shoot trap, skeet and wobble on Saturday. Matt Wilson, director of annual giving and alumni relations, planned and coordinated the event, provided refreshments and made sure the firsttime “homecoming” went well. L.R. Charles Alexander ’68 produces an album for a Jersey Boy Since Charles Alexander retired from Time magazine in 2001, he has taken on a wide variety of freelance projects, including writing and producing work for Frankie Valli and Bob Gaudio. They are original members of the Four Seasons singing group and thus central characters in the Tony-winning play Jersey Boys and the movie, directed by Clint Eastwood, based on the musical. The excitement surrounding the movie prompted Warner Music’s Rhino Entertainment to release on July 1, 2014, Alexander’s first solo production effort. Called Audio With a G: Sounds of a Jersey Boy, The Music of Bob Gaudio, the 2-CD set is the first compilation of Gaudio’s songs as recorded by various artists. It includes performances by the Four Seasons, Frank Sinatra, Diana Ross, the Temptations, Nina Simone, Cher, Roberta Flack and others. “The only thing I had to do is sign my name on the cover!” Gaudio, who lives in Nashville, told Jim Bessman of examiner. com. “The rest of the credit goes totally to Charles, for his tenacity, research and dedication.”

1970s Scott Crichton ’72 of Shreveport, La., recently was elected without opposition to the Louisiana Supreme Court. There are a total of seven justices on the court, which is located in the French Quarter of New Orleans. He represents District 2, which includes 11 parishes, and will serve for a term of 10 years. Judge Crichton has served as a district judge for 24 years and previously served for a decade as an assistant district attorney, prosecuting violent felony cases, and also had a private civil law practice. Scott credits his loving parents and The Webb School for his success. Davis W. Turner ’79 was appointed as Capella Healthcare Vice President, Associate General Counsel in July. With more than 27 years of legal experience, Turner will provide legal support for Capella’s hospitals and the corporate office on a variety of matters, including real estate, contracts, physician agreements and more.

1980s Irv Ashford ’87 was selected by the Texas Women’s Empowerment Foundation (TWEF) to be the International Leadership Honoree Award Recipient during the 8th annual International Financial & Leadership Summit, sponsored by TWEF. The Oct. 3, 2014, event was in Houston, Texas. Ashford was recognized for his work at Comerica Bank as Senior Vice President - Texas Market, and Community Development & External Affairs Director. A cocktail reception for area alumni was hosted by Richard Williamson ’87 and his wife, Charlee, at their home in New Orleans. 1990s Erica Wright’s (’99) debut novel, The Red Chameleon (Pegasus Books), was named one of O, The Oprah Magazine's best summer books of 2014. Wright is the author of Instructions for Killing the Jackal (Black Lawrence Press, 2011) and the chapbook Silt (Dancing Girl Press, 2009). Her poems have appeared or are forthcoming in Blackbird, Crazyhorse, Denver Quarterly, Drunken Boat, From the Fishouse, Gulf Coast, New Orleans Review, and elsewhere. She is a senior editor and the poetry editor at Guernica Magazine and has taught creative writing at Marymount Manhattan College and New York University's continuing studies program. A.J. Swafford ’99, Bell Buckle, Tenn., and wife, Sarah, welcomed daughter, Rachel Louise Swafford, July 13 at 1:06 p.m. She weighed 6 lbs. and 9 oz. 2000s Havan Tucker ’04 and his wife Alicia proudly announce the birth of their daughter, Cora Havan Tucker, on June 21, 2014, in Readyville, Tenn. Havan is technical director with Aerowing in Nashville, Tenn., and Alicia has retired from elementary teaching to devote full time to Cora.

Darby G. Holladay’s (’88) first novel, a literary thriller entitled The Lupane Legacy, published September 2014. The next novel in the series, The Pyin Protocol, is complete and will publish in the spring of 2015. Darby works at The United States Department of State as a press officer. He is a graduate of The Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies and resides with his wife Tracy and two children, Tessa and Daniel, in Northern Virginia.

Dennis R. Young Jr. ’03, Murfreesboro, Tenn., has been working with his dad’s insurance company, Dennis Young Insurance, Inc., for seven years. He has two boys, Robby, age 6, and Dennis III (Tre), age 4. Kristin Bouldin ’07, Greenville, S.C. “I graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a Masters in History in November 2012 and have started my second year teaching history in the Upper School of Christ Church Episcopal School in Greenville, S.C. I am engaged to Jim M. Burford of Greenville, S.C., and we are to be married in June 2015.”

Sarah Jennings ’07, Nashville, Tenn., Webb alumna and Vanderbilt graduate student, released her first single October 2014. The song won the Vandy Star Student Songwriting Competition earlier in 2014. Lamon Records, a Nashville-based label, produced and distributed the song. A video by Karen Linton ’07 promoting “Ultra Violet: Self Portrait”, an album released by Refiner’s Fire, was featured in USA Today on Aug. 13, 2014. She is also the executive producer of the album. Refiner’s Fire is a for-profit independent recorded label founded by her parents, Michael and Janet Linton, and Chris McMurtry. Janet Linton is The Webb School Department of Music chair.

Edward Wrightman “Edd ” Hudson ’40, age 91 and a resident of Walling, Tenn., died Nov. 1, 2014. Funeral services were Nov. 4, 2014, at Gum Springs Baptist Church. Burial followed with full military honors by the Veterans Honor Guard at Mt. Pisgah Cemetery.

The Webb School continues to be strengthened by your loyalty and commitment. As a donor, you clearly understand there is something special about our Webb School that stays with us forever. This year, alumni, parents, grandparents, faculty, staff and friends of the school provided funds that have enabled the school to make marked improvements of which I am very proud. In recognition of the many donors who have generously supported Webb during the past fiscal year (July 1, 2013-June 30, 2014), the Annual Report is included in this magazine. The stories and information you will see in the magazine describe and amplify the initiatives that are supporting our progress. From academics to technology, to capital projects to overall financial stability, I know Webb is succeeding in delivering on its mission. Please celebrate with me the results of Webb’s philanthropic support: The Webb Fund received $531,349 in gifts from 640 donors. These gifts provide critical support to ongoing operational needs and allow Webb to enhance educational opportunities.

Gifts were also made to the endowment, for capital projects and other specific initiatives. These special gifts, when added to The Webb Fund, totaled almost $1.4 million. Thank you! You believe in The Webb School, and your philanthropy is one more way that you are moving our school forward. The recent opening of McClurg Hall is an excellent example of Webb’s “philanthropy at work.” Many donor friends contributed to this valuable and needed building for our students.
