It Really is the People It’s the people. Just ask someone what they enjoy most about the myriad of activities that occupy their lives – family, careers, clubs, community service, church, travel ... Almost universally the answer will be “It’s the people.”
Scouting and The Webb School
The Webb School’s appeal to a Boy Scout is immediately apparent. Green grass on a wide open campus and class meetings in the shade of 100-year-old oaks offer an appealing alternative to concrete hallways, but the similarities do not end there. The School’s core values of integrity and courtesy are engrained in the institution’s mission statement and Latin motto, “Noli Res Subdole Facere,” translated to “Do nothing on the sly.”

"It's the People" When it was mentioned that the focus of the Fall-Winter Webb Magazine was to be “It’s the People”, I could not have been more pleased. Much of the focus at Webb in the past year was on the new Residential Village Phase I – two new dorms and a student center. These are beautiful and functional buildings that enhance the campus and help the school attract and retain students. However, throughout Webb’s history, it is what goes on inside these and other buildings which makes Webb what it is today. It’s the people. It is the residential faculty members who devote countless hours to boarding students after teaching, coaching, or other activities to support the boarding students. Monitoring study hours, checking students’ whereabouts, giving some adult advice on an issue, and nursing a sick student can all be a part of evening dorm coverage. It is the teachers spending extra time with a student to review test corrections, encouraging a student after an unsatisfactory outcome, helping to prepare a student for his or her first declamation, or spending extra time to prepare the lesson to be “just right.” Faculty and staff members listen carefully as a student reveals his or her dreams, then they work with each student to help find the pathway to achieve them. A business office worker comes in on the weekend, as the deadline for the school audit is rapidly approaching. The college counselor is empathically working with a student after his or her “dream college” has denied admission. The sports coach is working off-season with the players, exhorting them to push hard to be the best that they can be. There is a faculty member driving a spectator bus so that 40 students can attend an away game. It is the last week
before the play, the concert, or the art opening, and students and faculty work extra hours to fine tune a performance or exhibit. It is the maintenance staff member who spends three hours on a Friday night, attending to a sewer line problem. Then, there is the custodial worker coming in on Sunday to be sure that everything is ready for Monday’s Visitors’ Day. The admissions officer has been gone for more than a week, traveling to several cities to identify new prospects for Webb. Alumni return to campus, and Alumni and Development staff members work together to make this the best visit possible. The Alumni Board meets and discusses how to promote the school among its large constituency. The Board of Trustees has its annual retreat to discuss relevant issues – big and small – to govern the school at the highest level. It is the many trustees, alumni, faculty, staff, parents and students who give their time, talent, or treasure to support a school that has survived and thrived for 147 years and counting (the School’s 2015 – 2016 Annual Report is enclosed in this magazine). Most important, it is the students, present and past, who have given so much of themselves to create an environment of honor, character, respect, scholarship, and acceptance. The Webb School is uniquely special. I am grateful for all of the people in the past 147 years, who have been a part of creating this wonderful school environment. These are just a few examples of all of the great things that happen here. Thank you to all of the people!

2016-2017 Follin Speaker Series at Webb The series included presentations by a motivational speaker, an author and a salsa band during the fall semester. The endowed program allows Webb to offer its students, faculty, staff and community a wide range of academic and cultural offerings. The series began in September with a presentation by Blake McMeans, who related how “one tragic incident changed the course of his life forever”. In October, Webb graduate Julia Claiborne Johnson ’77, author of Be Frank with Me, spoke to the Webb community. Following a Q&A, she signed books. During the day, she also spoke to several classes and had lunch and discussion with two students each from grades 9-12, who had read her book. In November, Lalo and Friends Salsa Band performed. Lalo Davila, Director of Percussion Studies at Middle Tennessee State University School of Music, has extensive experience both as an educator, composer, author and performer. In April there will be a presentation by former U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, now Dean of the Law School and Doyle Rogers Distinguished Professor of Law at Belmont University. He will speak to classes and have lunch with students prior to the afternoon presentation and Q&A. An afternoon concert by Scotland’s Tannahill Weavers is planned for May. There will be a free community concert at Webb in the evening.

46 AP Scholars record for Webb, 5 earn national honors Forty-six students, the most ever at Webb, recently were named Advanced Placement Scholars. Additionally five achieved national ranking. Webb students passed 80.4 percent of all exams taken. Also, a total of 86.8 percent of Webb students achieved a score eligible for college credit and/or advanced placement in college courses. The pass rate in Tennessee was 58.4 percent, and the worldwide pass rate, 60.2 percent. The students’ recognition is based on their spring 2016 AP exam scores. 111 Webb students took a total of 250 AP exams. Webb offered 22 Advanced Placement classes in 2015-16. A total of 4.7 million exams were taken worldwide, and more than 33,000 Tennessee students took more than 56,000 exams in 2016. Three Webb courses had every student earn a passing grade. “I am really proud of the AP performances of our students and the faculty who teach them,” said Head of School Ray Broadhead. “This year we had 25 more students take AP exams, and a total of 46 more exams than last year. Even with this large increase, we had a higher AP pass rate than last year. Our scores are competitive with the best schools in the state.”
The Webb School Parents’ Association presented faculty and staff with “Thankfulness” Bags filled with all sorts of treats from homemade bread, cookies and brownies to specialty items, candy and other snacks. The presentation was during a special chapel on Nov. 17, and seniors assisted with the distribution. Each year, parents provide the unique treats for the bags, and they are assembled by a WSPA group. A total of 119 bags were delivered. Ashlea Shepard, WSPA co-president, and Tricia King, who chaired the project, spoke briefly during chapel to express appreciation to faculty and staff.
Several classes took advantage of the October weather and enjoyed camping trips. Ninth graders traveled to Camp Ocoee, and eighth graders went to Camp Living Stones. Sixth and seventh graders camped at New Frontiers, and then a group from New Frontiers visited Webb. Trip activities included a high ropes challenge, rock climbing/rappelling, zip lines, group challenges, hiking, archery and kayaking.
Hutchens uses fall break to learn about being entrepreneur, volunteer Ollie Hutchens, a 10th grader from Smyrna, Tenn., spent his two-day fall break volunteering at Second Harvest Food Bank in Nashville. The organization has an onsite Culinary Arts Center, operated by master chef (and Nashville restaurant entrepreneur) Mark Rubin. Hutchens said he chose to spend his fall break at the center to be more involved in a culinary environment, and also to complete some volunteer hours. His role was mainly to help with the meals -preparing ingredients, serving food and cleaning. “What I think I really learned was what a kitchen environment was like,” said Hutchens. “The work opportunity has been fantastic. It’s an absolutely friendly and welcoming environment where I get to learn from great chefs. I’ve had nothing but fun there.” While Hutchens is still considering career opportunities, right now he’s thinking of pursuing a culinary career after graduating from college.

Fall 2016 fundraising produces positive results More than half of Webb families respond to Five-Week Campaign
Give Day nets more than $10,000 with additional pledges made
Following a model started two years ago, the parent Webb Fund Campaign was conducted for five weeks for the entire school. Middle School and Upper School families participated in a Five-Week Webb Fund Campaign, by making voluntary contributions to The Webb Fund for the 2016-2017 academic year.
With the help of the Webb Alumni Board and Class Agents, there were more than 50 members of the Webb community who participated in Webb Give Day, making gifts totaling $10,664. There were also pledges of $10,550 to be given before June 30, 2017, the end of the 2016-2017 fiscal year. Gifts to The Webb Fund support faculty compensation, financial aid, and a myriad of campus programs for students.
Initially, the campaign was conducted by grade, for five weeks at a time, followed by two different five-week campaigns last year – one for the Middle School and one for the Upper School. This year, a school wide campaign was conducted for only five weeks, starting mid-September. Focusing the appeal led to a shorter solicitation time, and allowed for better connections with parents not only on “what” and “how” to give, but more importantly “why”. The Webb faculty participated in a similar five-week campaign in August, and reported 100% participation. To date, nearly half of the currently enrolled families have made a Webb Fund gift or pledged to make one before June 30. The Class of 2022 leads with 78% parent participation. Last year, The Webb Fund made possible an additional $2,100 in resources for each student. Should you wish to participate before June 30 by making a gift online at this time, click on “Make a Gift” on the homepage.
Congratulations to the Webb Class of 1995 that had the highest number of members make gifts and pledges on WEBB GIVE DAY and to the Classes of 1968, 1980, and 1999 that tied for second place! On campus, Webb students and faculty helped celebrate Sawney Webb’s 174th birthday with cake and the singing of “Happy Birthday” during lunch.
Webb travel to Asia brings parents, students and alumni together Ray Broadhead (Head of School), Dr. Leone Broadhead (Biology Teacher), and Matt Wilson (Director of Alumni and Development) made a trip to Asia in July. Their trip took them to three cities, two in China and one in South Korea. Receptions were hosted in Beijing, Shanghai, and Seoul which included alumni, parents, current students, and incoming students.
“Our Webb families from Asia bring cultural perspectives that enrich our campus. At the same time, our families from Tennessee and across the country offer perspectives that benefit our international students. I am very proud of the numerous types of exchanges that our students from all over the world have with each other. It is definitely one of the strengths of our community.”
2016 - 2017 Fall-Winter Issue
“Webb has students attending from all over the world, and it was wonderful to have so many families meet each other,” said Broadhead. “Some families traveled several hours by train or plane to meet the friends and family of their children. Everyone was so gracious, and it was truly an honor to be there. I especially want to thank our reception hosts in each city: Francis Zhang and Zhi Sun (Alston ’17 and Corinna ’17) and Eddie Zhuo and Kathleen Shi (Tommy ’19) who helped organize the reception in Beijing; Nancy Shi and Yujun Li (Lily ’16) and Zoey Zhou and Yexin Wang (Zia ’21) who helped plan our gathering in Shanghai. In Seoul, we enjoyed a terrific reception hosted by Jennifer Suhr ’02 at her restaurant. Her niece Hannah Lee ’17 was instrumental in organizing the reception.

49 seniors in The Webb School Class of 2017 continue Blazer Day tradition The 49 seniors in The Webb School Class of 2017 participated in Blazer Day, one of many traditions, Nov. 15, as they received their senior blazers in a special chapel ceremony. The presentation is scheduled annually on or near the birthday of founder, W. R. “Sawney” Webb, who was born on Nov. 11, 1842. Marking the Blazer Day ceremony, John P. Matthews IV, a Webb 1978 graduate and parent of senior Pierce Matthews, was the keynote speaker. As seniors continued the longtime Blazer Day tradition, the class members also had the opportunity to ring the bell that once stood at the original school in Culleoka, Tenn., where Sawney Webb and brother, John Webb, began their classes. Each year, Alumni Board members present the blazers during a school-wide chapel service. This year, Moe Hill ’75 and Hudson Byrd ’05 participated. Director of Admissions Julie Harris ’95 announced the seniors’ names. Parents, underclassmen, faculty, staff and guests attended the event.

Noah Creque, left, Murfreesboro; Carter Sublette, and Drew Ledbetter, both of Chapel Hill; and Knox Wimberley, Manchester; complete a Passport to Language class assignment in French class identifying countries where French is an official language and then matching each country with its continent and flag.
Sixth grade students at The Webb School received a Passport to Language when they returned for the 2016-2017 school year and began a “journey” designed to help them develop a love of language. As part of the new program, students will cycle through Chinese, Spanish, and French and participate in conversation-based situations, dialogues, games, songs, rhymes, and Total Physical response storytelling. These three world languages plus a hands-on culture pottery workshop will make up the Passport to Language experience. “We learn to communicate through language in an innate and natural way that replaces the gestures of our ancient ancestors,” said Moira Smith, Foreign Language Department chair. “Learning language in what we may call 'real-time' allows us to develop language by using it in first-hand experiences. And as we share
language, we share cultures and begin to understand our role in the multicultural great wide world in which we participate as citizens.” An authentic-looking passport was created to use in the program, and students will gain “visa stamps” on their passports as they work with the different countries and cultures within each language. They will keep the passport the entire year as validation and support of their experiences. “Annotations on the passports will contain links to student work of videos, artwork, and class presentations created in the various languages,” said Smith. Beginning in 7th grade, students will follow the prescribed credit coursework and may continue with upper level courses in French, Spanish, Chinese and Latin and also AP language classes in high school.

Two endowed faculty chairs presented Webb honored two longtime faculty members, Jacquelyn Boyanton, English Department chair, and Raymond Pryor, director of technology, during a recent special chapel. Boyanton was presented the G. Webb Follin, Jr. Chair of English, and Pryor was presented the W. Bryant Woosley, Sr. Chair of Technology. “This is a special day in the rich history of The Webb School. Today we honor scholarship, strong teaching, and two families who have chosen to ‘give back’ to The Webb School,” said Head of School Ray Broadhead. “In academic institutions, endowed chairs are a living, perpetual symbol to honor great teachers – teachers who have served their students well, and who live and share the values of the school.”
In congratulating Boyanton, Mary Follin Simonsen, daughter of G. Webb Follin, Jr., said, “It is with pleasure that today I am representing my mother, Mary, my sisters, Katherine and Grace, and my brother, Webb Follin, III, an alumnus of The Webb School, in honoring the newest recipient of the G. Webb Follin, Jr. Chair of English.” “Our father believed deeply in the excellence of teaching. His father, Gerald Webb Follin, Sr. was a teacher here for many years. Granddaddy set the academic bar at the highest level, and dad grew to appreciate the importance of that belief.” She added, “In order to attract students who understand the principle of academic excellence, a school must attract teachers who believe in that same principle. It is for that reason that we chose to establish an academic chair.” She added that her father selected the discipline of English knowing that a strong foundation in English is needed to communicate and succeed in professional, corporate and philanthropic areas throughout life.
The Webb School Magazine
In making the presentation to Boyanton, Broadhead noted that she has served primarily as a Middle School English teacher, where she has the unique skill set to teach the sixth grade. “Teaching sixth grade involves a remarkable blend of instruction, discipline, humor, and a strong love for students which allows the students to move forward, often without them really knowing it. Mrs. Boyanton has that gift.” He added that as chair of the English Department, she has helped the department create a vertical curriculum that makes sense for students from grades six through 12. Boyanton of Winchester is a graduate of Aquinas College in Nashville, Tenn. She also serves as faculty adviser for Raymond Pryor, Ray Broadhead and Lee Woosley '78, the Middle School student council, and is grandson of W. Bryant Woosley, Sr., representing the in her 17th year as a faculty member. Her Woosley Family at the presentation. daughter, Madeline, is a 10th grader at Webb. Her son, Michael Hunt, is a 2006 graduate.

“Thank you Mr. Broadhead, and thank you Follin family. This is such a great honor, and I feel privileged to accept it,” said Boyanton. “It has been a wonderful opportunity to teach at The Webb School for the past 17 years. I truly cherish the memories of the students when they begin their Webb careers in Middle School and also when they walk across the stage on graduation day. I have had such a great experience being a part of this community. Being the holder of the Follin Chair gives me the opportunity to continue to grow as a professional, and I look forward to that growth over the upcoming years,” she added.
Jacquelyn Boyanton with Webb Follin, III '73 and Mary Follin Simonsen, son and daughter of G. Webb Follin, Jr., representing the Follin Family, and Ray Broadhead
Following the ceremony, Webb Follin, III said, “It is always great to be back on campus” and to be part of the ceremony. He noted that the family has seen the “good of the chair and how it helps faculty and students.” Speaking about the Woosley Chair, Broadhead said, “Mr. Pryor has been the Woosley chair holder for many years, being named recipient in 1999, but I recently learned that he never received an actual chair. His technological influence on students, faculty, and administrators has been extraordinary. He has served Webb well, moving us forward in the rapidly changing world of technology. I am honored to finally present the physical chair of the W. Bryant Woosley, Sr. Chair of Technology to Raymond Pryor.” “I am so thankful to the Woosley family for creating the Chair of Technology. The computer age, The Webb School and the benevolence of the Woosley family all came together at the right time,” said Pryor. “In the late 90s, the Internet was in its infancy, and schools were trying to figure out where computers fit into the curriculum. Headmaster Jon Frere Continued on page 11
Continued from page 10 knew that Webb needed someone to stay on top of emerging technologies, evaluate their usefulness and devise a way to introduce them into the school.” Pryor explained. “The funding from the Woosley Chair has allowed me to pursue many innovative technologies that have become essential to the 21st Century Webb. We are fully integrated into the modern cloud concept of technology. Webb was one of the first schools in Tennessee to issue email addresses to all students as well as adopting the Google Apps for Education platform. Recently we completed major upgrades to our infrastructures including campus-wide fiber optic networks as well as hi-speed WiFi in every building and even our buses.” He added, “This Chair also gives me a chance to work in the classroom and lab with young people eager to make their own contributions to emerging technologies. Many have gone on to great success in technologies from video game designers to national security agencies.” Pryor graduated from Middle Tennessee State University with a Bachelor of Arts. A resident of Wartrace, he joined Webb in 1994 and has held several positions during his tenure. He has taught computer science and economics classes and worked in the alumni and development office. He currently teaches an AP computer science course. Raymond’s son, Ryan, graduated in 2012, and his daughter, Anna, graduated in 2014.

As of the end of November, The Webb School has received more than $10.6 million in gifts and pledges as part of its “Moving our Tradition Forward Campaign”. This milestone marks the completion of the Campaign that started in July of 2010. “I am delighted to be able to report we have reached our goal,” said Head of School Ray Broadhead. “I began my time at Webb in the first year of the campaign, and I appreciate all of the support we have received from donors and volunteers. This campaign has already had an amazing impact on our students, faculty, and staff. Many are still considering gifts at this time, and our plan is to count any gift or pledge through the end of 2016 as part of the Campaign.” Phil Coop ’66 (Board Chair 20072011) and Huddleston ’81, co-chaired the campaign on behalf of the Board of Trustees. “When we outlined the campaign goals in 2010, we knew we were taking a big swing for the fences,” said Huddleston. “I am so impressed with how things have turned out.” The Campaign started in 2010 with three major priorities: Grow campus facilities (classrooms and residential space), increase endowment for faculty and students, and maintain strong support for current operations through The Webb Fund. Claudia Hazelwood, director of the Alumni and Development Office from 2010-2015, and Matt Wilson, current director who worked with Hazelwood, have managed the day-to-day operations of the campaign.
“We wanted to do the best for Webb, and to help the school improve in all facets of its operations,” said Coop. George Pine ’68 (Board Chair 2011-2015) added, “This campaign had a very special moment in April 2016, when we dedicated two dormitories and a new student center. Webb campus life has dramatically improved for boarding and day students.” Keith Barton, chairman of the Building and Grounds Committee of the Board of Trustees, added, “It was a tremendous project (Residential Village), and I am very proud to have been able to be involved on behalf of the committee.” Having exceeded the $10 million goal, the school has transitioned into the final “counting” phase of the campaign, through the end of the calendar year, and all gifts and pledges made by Dec. 31 will count towards the total. Two special minicampaigns will continue beyond Dec. 31: Fundraising to name the new Student Center in honor of Dorothy Elkins and a new faculty endowment in honor of Woody Sims ’42. Donors had a special opportunity during the community-wide Webb Give Day, on Sawney Webb's birthday, Nov. 11. John Sawyer, chairman of the Board of Trustees, said, “I appreciate more than ever the wonderful educational environment that has been created thanks to the generosity of so many.” A special celebration is planned in the spring, and a detailed campaign report will be included in the Spring-Summer 2017 magazine.

He married a Webb graduate, Jessica Delbridge Woosley ’82 from Murfreesboro, and served on the Board of Trustees for almost 20 years, as recently as 2014. He commented, “We are pleased that the Woosley Chair of Technology continues to help fund and advance the use of technology at Webb, both in the classroom and throughout the campus. Raymond Pryor has been committed to Webb and has made a significant contribution to enabling technology to take Webb into the 21st century.”

It REALLY is The People!
It’s the people. Just ask someone what they enjoy most about the myriad of activities that occupy their lives – family, careers, clubs, community service, church, travel ... Almost universally the answer will be “It’s the people.”
encouraging each other before a declamation, residential staff making Webb feel like home, an alum taking time to speak at chapel, coaches encouraging success on and off the field, parents volunteering to help in many ways.
The Webb School is no different. It might be a teacher staying after extra help to continue assisting a student, classmates
It’s the people who make Webb special and create bonds that last long after graduation. But don’t just take our word for it.
The Webb School Magazine
“It’s the people at Webb who challenge you to flourish without saying a word. Their presence, both in and out of the classroom, inspires you to do better, to be better. Working with the people who educated me still inspires me today. I think of all of the lives they have touched and think to myself, ‘I want to be that person.’ I unearthed grit I did not know was within me because of people 22 years ago. It’s the people here, who made me discover how I wanted to spend my time on this earth.” -- Middle School Head Tabetha Sullens ’94 (Parent, Lexie ’18)

“No one gets to where they are without support and guidance. Every success story has a link to a mentor or person providing help in some form. The Webb School has always had mentors, faculty and staff who have made a difference. From faculty members with iconic status to young educators in the making to staff and coaches comes encouragement, praise and realistic and at times critical assessment (not everything one does is praise worthy) that makes a difference. While some people may be able to list individuals who have impacted their lives (and I could as well), it is more likely that the combination of feedback and support across individuals is what has made the cumulative effect. Webb is in great shape in this regard: too many people for a list.” -- Board of Trustees Member Bill Hardin ’79 (Parent, Josephine ’15)
“It's the people who make Webb special -- those faculty/staff who are passionately dedicated to their profession and the students who represent such wonderful diversity. They are given the opportunity to explore themselves and their abilities in a wide variety of opportunities. It is also about the often deep and caring relationships that are formed within the Webb community, and that have withstood the test of time. -- History Teacher Ralph Jones “Webb is a special place in many ways however, what makes Webb unique is the people within our community. The students at Webb are extremely talented and unbelievably friendly. The teachers in the Webb community push everyone to achieve their full potential and are fully committed to the school. Everyone at Webb, students and faculty, will support you and will be there for you anytime.” -- CJ Rogers ’17 “At Webb, you form deep bonds with friends that last a lifetime and span the globe. There is really only one college friend I keep up with, and I see her every day because I married her. It is my Webb friends that I wanted to spend time with when I came back from overseas. These are ‘life friends’ that you keep forever.” -- Dean of Students Andrew McRady ’86 (Parent, Siree ’18) “There are two main reasons why the people of The Webb School make all the difference.
The most obvious is the combination of individuals who are drawn to the school because they see it as a permanent move professionally and other members of the Webb community, both teachers and staff, who are drawn from the nearby cities and towns. These latter individuals are nononsense, practical people who make the wheels of the school run smoothly and add a certain cultural flavor that is unmistakable. Both are at Webb for the experience of being a part of a place that holds the education of young adults, as well as the development of their character, to a high standard. Those who move to Webb for the ‘long-haul’ bring their own unique perspective with them and can, over time, realize their lasting impact. These two groups may seem incongruous but in the end work well to deliver a rounded educational experience. Winston Churchill once said, ‘Without tradition, art is a flock of sheep without a shepherd. Without innovation, it is a corpse.’ The same could be said about educating. Webb is well grounded in tradition because of the people who make up the community. Innovation in education is important, and Webb has been lucky enough to have teachers with varied backgrounds and experiences which bring forward new perspectives. For a little town in Tennessee, there’s more going on there than people think. But after all, we were never taught to be boastful.” -- Alumni Board Member Hudson Byrd ’05

The first for me was the Boy Scouts. The Scouts takes boys to places they may otherwise never get to go, like rock climbing in the Appalachians, hiking in the New Mexico desert, canoeing the Canadian boundary waters. On every excursion, the group of young
peers is shaped by the points of character emphasized by the Scout Law: Trustworthiness, loyalty, and courtesy to name a few. The Webb School’s appeal to a Boy Scout is immediately apparent. Green grass on a wide open campus and class meetings in the shade of 100-year-old oaks offer an appealing alternative to concrete hallways, but the similarities do not end there. The School’s core values of integrity and courtesy are engrained in the institution’s mission statement and Latin motto, “Noli Res Subdole Facere,” translated to “Do nothing on the sly.” Given shared goals and methods of preparing youth for a productive adult life, it’s no surprise that Scouting has a long history at Webb. The school sponsored its own troop as early as 1935, and lasting until the 1960s. While there is no longer an official Boy Scout presence on campus, the Webb environment continues to attract

I never watched cartoons on Saturday morning. I grew up on a farm. Instead, typical childhood entertainment involved the outdoors, a well-sharpened pocket knife, and more than occasionally a paper book of matches. These days, for a six-yearold boy, this may seem like the precursors of wayward youth, but was fairly common for a Tennessee country boy, and my parents embraced my interests, taught me proper safety measures, and kept a close but un-intrusive eye on my activities. Fortunately, there are institutions that specialize in taking a young person’s love for freedom and adventure and turning them into valuable lessons about responsibility, integrity, and leadership.

Scouts. In my graduating class alone (2004) there were at least four Eagle Scouts, which in a total number of less than 30 students, is quite significant. The reason that The Webb School and the Boy Scouts have so much in common can be traced back to the fact that their respective founders, though raised an ocean apart, were not such different people. Sawney Webb once stated that “personal integrity is more
important than money, power or fame.” Upon his retirement from the organization, Lord Baden Powell, credited with the creation of the Scouting movement, echoed this sentiment in his final letter to the Scouts: “Happiness does not come from being rich, nor merely being successful in your career, nor by self-indulgence… the real way to get happiness is by giving out happiness to other people.”

What was the most important thing about Scouting that influenced your life? It taught me to be self-reliant, to love and respect God and country, and to try to live a life consistent with honesty, fairness and compassion. In my opinion, Scouting is the finest youth-serving organization in the country. How did characteristics of Webb and Scouting complement each other? Webb historically has always had a very
strong honor code and, honesty and integrity is part of that which the school instills in its students. Scouting, likewise, instills such values. So, Webb School and Scouting complement each other in regard to the similar basic guidelines for living life.

Resident of: Nashville, Tenn. Occupation: My early years were in the automobile business, and I now take pleasure in serving as a non-stipendiary staff member at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, Nashville, as the Assistant to the Rector for Pastoral Affairs. Again, the tenets of Scouting and Webb are walking with me on this wonderful path!
I began Scouting when I was 10 1/2 years old. The prospect of camping out and cooking on an open fire intrigued me. Once I became a member of a troop, I quickly learned the Scout Oath and the 12 Laws. It was there that I began to realize their importance and impact on my life. I progressed through the ranks and earned my Eagle Rank before I started at Webb. It was these learned duties in the Oath that impressed me then and continue to be with me today. The Webb experience and the moral standards exhibited in the Pledge and the example of Sawney, Son Will, Webb Follin and Henry Whiteside echoed the standards presented by Scouting. After I left Webb,
I was only marginally involved with Scouting. But, I was recruited to assist in many areas on the District and Council level, where I was active until 1987. The influences of Webb and Scouting were foundations for the automobile business that my father and I enjoyed. Our customers were paramount. That same dedication to Webb was rekindled when I agreed to serve on the Alumni Board. Here there were/are a dedicated group of people, determined to spread the wonderful vision of Sawney and the school. It was exciting to witness the growth and dynamism of the Board during the 10-plus years that I served.

Scout Troop 106, Murfreesboro (still an active troop) It developed in me a great love of nature and the outdoors. Scouting helped me to appreciate the natural beauty that comes in so many forms. Even today it is hard for me to be in a natural setting and not feel a strong sense of joy. Without Scouting I think I would have missed a lot of opportunities be in the outdoors camping, canoeing, hiking, rock climbing and just sitting around a camp fire telling tall tales. Maintaining a strong moral center is critical to success in all things. I think Webb’s motto serves as a strong foundation for all actions.

Webb graduate Norfleet Johnston (Class of 1952) has been active in Scouting for more than 60 years. He attended his first World Jamboree as a youth in 1951, giving him the opportunity to travel to Austria with nearly 13,000 fellow Scouts from around the world. Unfolding amidst the recent shadow of World War II, the event symbolized Scouting’s philosophy of international unity, and left a lifelong impression on Mr. Johnston. Since then, Norfleet Johnston has attended five more World Jamborees. The most recent took place in 2015, hosted in Kirara-Hama, Yamaguchi, Japan. Attendance has grown to more than 33,000 Scouts representing 150 countries, and more than 8,000 adult volunteers. As one of these volunteers, Mr. Johnston was tasked with chronicling the event on behalf of the National Scout Museum. From his daily log of the 11-day event, Johnston has written a book about his experience, which will be published in the Spring of 2017. The stories in his book will include an account of the 70th anniversary observance of the bombing of Hiroshima, held on August 6, 2015, and attended by one Scout from each country represented, and descriptions of the many cultural exchange activities that take place at the Jamboree. Mr. Johnston encourages anyone with the opportunity to attend a World Jamboree, believing that it provides the unique opportunity to meet people from around the world who share a common goal: To promote fellowship and understanding between different cultures and backgrounds. Scouting is a family affair for the Johnstons. Norfleet’s father, Gale Johnston, and his three sons founded the National Scout Museum in 1960, inspired by his passion for the organization and in honor of Gale’s wife, who passed away in 1956. Today, Norfleet is retired and continues to volunteer for the museum and serve what he believes is “the greatest youth movement in the U.S.” Norfleet Johnston has already published one book on Scouting, “From The Centennial to The Summit,” in 2010 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America. More than 60 years after his graduation, Norfleet Johnston can still quote Old Sawney Webb’s words from memory, and he believes that commonality between the Boy Scouts and The Webb School is clear. Norfleet puts it simply, “Good Christian values: Integrity, hard work, and wanting to do your best. I’ve always tried to stick to that.” Resident of: Loretto, Tenn. Occupation: Retired. Pedigree Your Ancestors: The Moore Family Legacy By Julie Harris ‘95, Director of Admissions It was 1903 when 15-year-old Walter Vernon Moore first stepped foot on a train headed for Bell Buckle. Little did he know that moment would begin a four-generation legacy at The Webb School spanning more than 11 decades. Moore was raised in Oakland, Miss., a small farm town in North Central Mississippi. His family was known for farming cotton and soybeans, and they always had a strong emphasis on education. Moore’s father was a graduate of the second class of Vanderbilt School of Law, and his mother was a graduate of Ward Belmont, known today as Belmont University. They loved poetry and reading their expansive book collection. Their small farm town provided limited sights and horizons for the young Moore so his parents enrolled him in The Webb School to expand his knowledge.

Seventy-five years later, Edward Moore ’84 found himself in the same shoes as his grandfather. Still living in rural Mississippi, Edward Moore took a road trip to Bell Buckle by himself to interview at The Webb School. “It was 100% my decision to leave home, but my mother had a strong influence on me because she valued education,” said Moore. “I knew Webb was a place that would allow me to grow and be my own person.” For Moore, Webb was a life-changing experience. “I wore a coat and tie and was exposed to character and discipline,” said Moore. He developed good study habits, work ethic and how to be an effective writer and public speaker. Moore believes that the most important thing Webb offers is something that most of the world is lacking … civility and honor. “Webb taught me to have the character to not just follow the crowd but to stand on my own two feet and do what is right both personally and in business.”
After Webb, Moore graduated from the University of Mississippi and settled in Columbia, Tenn., with his wife Dawn, where he is an administrator at NHC. He also served 10 years on Webb’s Alumni Board. “One thing I am most proud of as an adult is being a graduate of The Webb School,” said Moore. As the youngest of six children and the only sibling who attended Webb, Moore recalls his mother telling him that Webb was the best money she spent on any of her children’s education. Moore believes that Webb maintains “a place where you can be your own person.” He sees this through the eyes of his own children, who are fourth-generation Webb students. His oldest son, Walter, attended Webb for two years and honed his study skills, which has more than prepared him for his current studies at the University of Mississippi. His youngest son, Henry, is enjoying his first year at Webb and is a member of the football and basketball teams. For Edward Moore ’84, his Webb experience has come full circle. “My favorite teacher at Webb was L.R. Smith, and I couldn’t believe that 32 years later my son also has him as a teacher,” said Moore. Moore also has kept a blanket that was given to him by his good friend and dormmate, Peter Erichsen ’84 from Guatemala. That same blanket can be found at Webb today in his son Henry’s dorm room in Chambliss.

But the Scouts didn't only focus on developing men of honor, they then wanted to put that to use in order to impact those around us. As a Scout, I remember lots of volunteer events and team building exercises, all with an emphasis of teaching and honing leadership skills. If I were to pick one trait that was important to Sawney Webb, it would be integrity. Integrity seemed to be at the root of every lesson you would read in The Schoolmaker, and that’s a characteristic that the Boy Scouts emphasized as well. We were essentially surrounded by scout leaders that doubled as role models and fatherfigures. The culture very much instilled honor and integrity as a core value... and what could be a better foundation for leadership than integrity?

Scouting has given me a love for the outdoors and an appreciation for the autonomy that comes with experiencing it. Independence and leadership go hand in hand with spending time in the outdoors. One of Webb’s major impacts upon me was the focus upon integrity. Trustworthy, loyal, brave -- these are all words describing scouting in the scout law. When it came to Webb, these ideals were reinforced in a community that stands wholeheartedly behind them. The forthright integrity that scouting promotes, Webb fosters.

Annual Report of Gifts and Donors
2016 - 2017 Fall-Winter Issue

Letter from the Chairman, Board of Trustees August 2016 Dear Webb Community, Great things are happening on our campus! With the opening of Meadows Hall, Wendel Haynes Hall and the student center, the overall student experience has taken a major step forward. The addition of these facilities is the result of your support and financial contributions and shows what an incredible community we have. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I want to thank each of you for your commitment and continued interest in Webb. In addition to improved facilities, Webb succeeded in meeting its development goals with gifts of $628,250 to The Webb Fund from 670 donors. Additionally, our comprehensive campaign, Moving Our Tradition Forward, has now raised $9.8 million of its $10 million goal! These funds are critical to the success of Webb and allow us to continue to provide a unique educational experience -- focusing on honor and character in addition to rigorous academics – that began nearly 150 years ago. If you have not been on campus recently, I encourage you take the time for a visit. While much is familiar, you will note that we have kept up with the evolving needs of students and the never-ending advancement of technology. Supporting such change is critical for both Webb and our students who will enter a world accelerating faster than ever before. Preparing students for both college and an increasingly competitive working environment is critical; to achieve this task we continue to expand our Advanced Placement program as well as introducing dual enrollment providing students with the opportunity to receive college
credit while still enrolled in high school. Such programs help differentiate Webb and allow our scholars to further develop competencies well beyond their years. We now have Meadows Hall (special thanks to the Meadows Foundation), Wendel Haynes Hall (special thanks to the Class of 1968 leadership), and are on our way to naming the new student center in honor of Mrs. Dorothy Elkins. Under the leadership of Keith Barton, board vice chair and Building and Grounds Committee chair, the Residential Village project was completed on time and under budget. Please find included The Webb School’s Annual Report that details the list of all donors from 2015-2016; such support is critical to our success and enables Webb to maintain a firm financial footing. In closing, I want to personally thank each member of the Webb community: alumni, students, faculty, staff, parents, grandparents and friends of the school. Having completed my first year as Chairman, I appreciate more than ever what a wonderful environment that has been created. From current students’ experiences to the very meaningful memories of all alumni, Webb has touched each of us and made our lives richer. As we move forward, your continued support ensures The Webb School’s ongoing success as we approach our 150th year anniversary.
Sincerely, John E. Sawyer ’88 Chairman, Board of Trustees

These gifts assist almost every area across the school, and continue a cycle of giving whereby current students, faculty, and staff benefit from those who have come before them. Alumni listed below have made cash gifts to one or more areas of the school during the fiscal year. The top five classes based on giving percentage are listed at the end of the report, along with the overall alumni giving percentage and total dollars received. Class giving percentages are calculated as follows: The numerator includes all alumni who made a gift. The denominator includes all active alumni of a given class who graduated from Webb. Class of 1940
