Grand Daddy Hotel Although this hotel has been refurbished and altered a number of times in more than a century, the basic design remains much as it was when it opened in 1895 as Hotel Metropole (though the original 1984 plans named the building as the ―Hamburg Hotel‖). A newspaper report in the Cape Argus, 1 July 1895, stated that it was ―one of the landmarks of the city … five storeys high … a tower at the corner rising over 90 feet (27 metres) above the street level. It is of a very imposing and grand appearance, being designed in the old German Renaissance style, introduced for the first time in this Colony.‖ The upper storey, with its ―quaint dormer windows, pediments, Mansard roof, and capola (cupola)‖ and tower were removed in later years and its ―red pointed brickwork and artificial stone facings‖ have long since been plastered over. The original construction was to a plan by the Dutch architect, Anthony De Witt, who came to South Africa in 1879. William Black, an Australian architect, undertook extensions in about 1900. The prominent verandah that is shown in early drawings on both the Long and Castle Street façades was originally supported by cast-iron columns. During a rebuild, possibly in the 1920s, the verandah was re-erected on four sets of concrete pillars on Long Street only. The projecting concrete balconettes and window hoods on the upper floors also probably date from this time. Although situated in the same block as the YMCA (Young Men‘s Christian Association), the hotel was largely ignored by YM residents in the 1950s, as most of us could just about afford board-and-lodging at the YM, let alone ―eat out‖. In later years. Contact Phone: +27 21 424 7247 Fax: +27 21 424 7248 Email: info@granddaddy.co.za 38 Long Street, Cape Town, 8001

Our menu is based on classic, locally sourced ingredients, served in creative flavour combinations and served with an inventive, modern edge. The simple menu changes every day according to availability of ingredients. Farm produce, from honey and yoghurt to guinea fowl and pastureraised beef and lamb; organic vegetables, such as kohlrabi and Jerusalem artichokes. You‘ll also find some new dishes never before seen on a local menu like Brandy & Coke ice-cream, liquid popcorn and more.

We like to surprise our guests, that‘s why you‘ll find that our menu lists only the ingredients with no indication of how your meal will be prepared or which ingredients dominate (of course, if you ask, we‘ll gladly tell you more).

At the Foodbarn Restaurant Noordhoek, we serve the food that our Chef Franck Dangereux is famous for… delicious and decadent ‗casual fine-dining‘ in a relaxed and characterful old barn. At the Foodbarn Deli during the day, you are invited into our ‗home-fromhome‘ by the tantalising aroma‘s of the fresh bread and the best coffee in the Noordhoek Valley, the uber friendly and caring service, chef Sheila‘s delicious creations. At night the Deli is transformed into a delightful Tapas Bar serving inspired dishes with amazing textures and flavours. Pop in with friends to enjoy tasty bites with your favourite wine or beer.

Chef Julia Hattingh‘s 18-seat table d‘hôte restaurant in Observatory serves a 5-course chef‘s choice dinner and is, in her own words, her ―daydream come true‖. At the dinners (that are frequently booked weeks in advance), Hattingh displays her skills, gained with time spent in local and renowned French kitchens, through intensely flavourful dishes. The menus rotate often and are crafted to pair with a selected winery‘s offering – a new winery is chosen every few weeks. The simplicity of presentation sometimes belies the numerous steps in preparation, with several slowcooked dishes having begun their lives the day before.

Leinster Hall is now home to The Stack – private members club and public brasserie. The illustrious 160-year old lady has been given a second youth, a coiffe and polish that sees her Georgian structure and Victorian fretwork shining. She knows a club of note when she sees one, The Cape Town Club having had its time there, and gracefully survived a serious blaze just after The Stack moved in. She is back, she has a story to tell and a lot longer life to live yet. The Stack was born on a fragrant afternoon in the monsoon season. Rain and gin flowed, as did the imaginations of Nigel and Sarah Pace.

NGORONGORO SERENA SAFARI LODGE Tanzania‘s prehistoric Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Eighth Wonder of the World, has yawned heavenward for millennia. Deep within its immense walls is a breath-taking blue-green landscape dotted with plains, lakes and forests; an eerie, otherworldly ―land that time forgot‖ thick with massive bull elephants, rhinos, wildebeests and the highest concentration of lions in Africa. Nestled high above the plains into the Crater‘s jagged rim, cloaked in river stone and indigenous vines, Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge is barely visible to the naked eye. Framed by arched stone passages and timbered decks, its torch-lit walls are adorned with stylized cave paintings. At the stone heart of the lodge burns a glowing fire, which is kept constantly alight. Rooms are looped around the Crater rim. Each has its own rock-enclosed balcony, and all enjoy completely uninterrupted views of the volcanic amphitheatre far below. Our Ngorongoro hotel lodge is a place that feels as ancient as the Crater itself, yet no modern comfort has been spared in an effort to bring you the best safari adventure in Africa and one of the most unique travel experiences in the world. Within this imaginary existence many of us will have climbed and played high up in the bows and branches and, for the lucky few, built a ‗palace‘ in the sky. Tarangire Treetops sits serenely on the border of the Tarangire National Park Tanzania. Makakatana Bay Lodge Makakatana Bay Lodge is named after a Zulu Chief called "Chief Mhakhakhathana", who lived in the area many years ago. The Makakatana Bay Lodge logo of the crab was used because the land on which the lodge currently lies had an old concrete block house built on it by Hugh's grandfather, John Kemp Morrison (Jock) who used it to store fish and crabs in the early 1900s. The 'crab' house was later left abandoned due to the severe heat of summer and due to the banning of commercial catching of the crabs and when the Lodge was built it was initally used as a wine cellar. We have since put the old building into retirement due to invading fig tree roots. James (Jimmy) & Ursula Morrison lived at Makakatana for 50 years before moving to Ballito, on the KwaZulu Natal north coast, where Ursula Morrison still lives. Ursula Morrison has written some wonderfully rich memoirs of the history behind Makakatana.

On 27 april 1897 St Lucia was declared a game reserve. The conservation area was a 35'000 hectare lake with a 1km strip of land surrounding the lake. At a later stage other conservation areas were added. On 1 December 1999 UNESCO declared the lake and adjacent coastal areas a world heritage site. The 328'000 hectare reserve was South Africa‘s first world heritage site and encompasses 5 five major ecological zones. Makakatana Bay Lodge remains the only privately owned lodge situated within this World Heritage Site.

Hartford House Peering through one teakwood door at Hartford House, you face the splendour of the 1800s. Opening another, the distant sounds of an ancient people at work lilt across the silent landscape, a country of great space, spectacular mountains and big skies. This place commands a headland between the world of traditional cultures and the gracious style of a bygone era. Hartford is the resolution of all South African safaris, the journey's exclamation point. A retreat from the hubbub where you make sense of a fast life and its senseless details, and where we learn to redress ourselves on a first name basis. There are too many luxury hotels in the world offering the same: a chocolate on the pillow, canned romance, and cuisine called "haut" because it's spelled in French. Hartford stands apart for its authenticity. Its architecture, views, dining, sounds and scents, its racehorses and its people are all exhilarating surprises, unique to this Zululand, this culture, to Africa. Yes, you come here to be pampered, but at Hartford luxury is the journey, not the destination. The truth is, Hartford just happened. A home, and a grand one at that, which grew into a hotel. A community looks to it as its watering hole, its nexus of entertainment, its fountain of gossip. In so many ways, it's gained and regained inspiration from the cultures it celebrates. It is life's exception, a place at the same time comfortable beyond dreams, yet innocent of pretence. Our Story is about a dream... a dream to share our passion for good food with you. A dream of building a family of restaurants where people don't need to board a plane to experience Mozambique. A destination where no passport is required! Based on the authentic Mozambique "Barraca" which, in English means "hut". In Mozambique - in a home or on the street - eating, drinking and chilling is a way of life that is captured in a "Barraca". This is Mo-Zam-Bik! Exceptionally flavoured food and a good vibe! An Education to live and let live! So that's what we have created... a chill zone reminiscent of hot sunshine, white sands, prawns and beer! Muito Obrigado!!!

Previously known as MolenVliet Lodge, Fifty Seven Waterberg is set in the heart of the magnificent Welgevonden Game Reserve that forms part of the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve, which UNESCO declared to be an official World Heritage Site in 2001. The facilities of our well-appointed lodge provide guests with an oasis of 5-star luxury that is surrounded by 35 000 hectares of unsurpassed natural beauty that is replete with exotic wildlife. The perfect choice for a weekend break or a romantic getaway, our lodge is about a three hours‘ drive from Johannesburg and Pretoria. Located in a malaria-free zone and with just 5 guest suites, our intimate setting combines privacy and peace with everything that you need for a comfortable and relaxed stay. To describe our accommodation at Fifty Seven Waterberg as 5-star luxury is, if anything, an understatement. Our guests are consistently surprised and delighted just by the sheer size of our suites, and with a minimum of 80 square metres in which to spread out and enjoy their stay, this is not too surprising. At the main lodge, our guests are welcome to sit back and enjoy some downtime with our comfortable sofas and armchairs which help to create a relaxing living area, while other equally well-designed areas provide guests with spaces in which to work.

Restaurants

The inspiration behind Craft was driven by two nostalgic individuals, Jo Pinheiro & Chris Mandos, in a quest to develop a unique restaurant with words such as hand made, old school, authentic, attention to detail, artisanal and personal as a major part of the Craft vocabulary. "People want to be taken back to an era when one only bought ingredients and not mass produced meals, an era when craftsmen took immense pride in their vocations and things were made with love rather than measurement, with care rather than science, an era when quality and individuality was a common given". The focus is on individuality and hospitality and doing things old school in a modern way. The look has a hint of Steampunk complimented by natural elements: antique mirrors, natural woods, natural leathers, bentwood chairs, deep buttoned leather couches, face brick, parquet flooring, copper, stainless steel and retro tiles.

Senorita Sufuentez and Gordo were living in London. An odd place to be introduced to the intricacies of Mexican food, but the place nonetheless. Forever fans of tequila, their hearts were open to the barrage of burrito bars and Mexican eateries and oh how they indulged. As they were driving down through Africa on their way back home, Senorita and Gordo reminisced over fire-roasted cheesy quesadillas and killer guac about tequila-fuelled nights with friends. The Mayan moon shone a bit brighter, the planets aligned and (cue angel song) new paths were planned. Luckily for them, the most excellent Veektor Sufuentez and Thompadre were vibeing on the same vibes down here back in the motherland. Mad Mexicans through and through, they too had a yearning for a Mexican revolution. The four decided to band-of-brother it up.

Perron Illovo opened its doors in May 2014 to happy customers who fast became family; to day of the dead fiestas, and dancing on tables; to tasty tapas shared between friends and to afternoons of sipping magical margaritas in the sun.

Queen Sheba Ethiopian Restaurant is an Ethiopian Restaurant that offers authentic, premium quality dishes, with special attention to vegetarians, vegans, health conscious, and adventurous customers. Our menu options cater to vegetarians, vegans and meat lovers alike at reasonable prices. Our dishes are freshly prepared from quality spices imported from Ethiopia and locally sourced naturally grown ingredients, raised and grown without pesticides or antibiotics. We aim to introduce Ethiopian food to the broader public like other mainstream food that anyone can come in and eat at any time. Ask anybody, ―What does Africa mean to you?‖ and you‘re likely to provoke a strong response – good or bad. The truth is, Africa is not a continent that plays small or goes halfway, it is bold, unapologetic and wonderfully diverse. The world in a continent, Africa is many things to many people, but ultimately it is home when we acknowledge its significance as the birthplace of civilisation.

Tulia Zanzibar Unique Beach Resort Our independent resort was opened in 2015 however, the story begins in 2005, when the Czech owners decided to start their Zanzibar adventure with one goal in mind: to offer accommodation and service that will set the standard for luxury and elegance on Zanzibar Island. When personally designing the resort, they decided to build only 16 villas, to ensure maximum privacy and individual service. Their wish was to incorporate traditional Zanzibari pavilions with chic, modern elements, garden and ocean views, all filled with soft, natural light. When buiding the resort, the owners' wish was to give people jobs, instead of using machines. They have used as much local material, resources and manpower as possible. Some of the people working on the construction site are still working with us today. Tulia Zanzibar Unique Beach Resort * is located on the East coast of Zanzibar Island, at the famous Pongwe Beach, 39 km away from Zanzibar City. The resort was opened in 2015 and during it's only 2 years of activity, it was granted important awards in the Hotel Industry. In 2017, the resort was awarded the title of TripAdvisor Excellency based on our Guests' reviews.
