Knysna has a rich history spanning sailing ships, gold discovery and timber extraction to arguably become South Africa‟s favorite holiday destination. The Khoisan people originally inhabited the area until Dutch Settlers arrived in the 17th century. Knysna‟s documented history began in 1804 with the arrival of George Rex, rumored to be the illegitimate son of King George III who subsequently opened shops, established a port and a timber business that exported hardwoods around the world. The Thesen family moved from Norway to Knysna in 1870 and founded numerous business entities in the town, and in 1904 Charles William Thesen bought Paarden Island (now named Thesen Islands) and began processing timber on the Islands in 1922. Wood waste from the timber mill was subsequently used to start a power station which generated electricity from turbines and this eventually supplied the towns of Knysna and Plettenberg Bay with electricity until the mid 1970‟s. The various structures were relocated around the island, often without documented plans, and were part of the Eskom power grid for many years. The current power station site, which now hosts the Turbine Boutique Hotel & Spa and Island Café, was built in 1939/1940.

The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company has been providing visitors with a world-class experience since October 4, 1929. The company operates in a National Park and World Heritage Site. The mountain‟s magnetism has a way of drawing people in, compelling them to reach the summit. But getting to the top was not always the effortless trip it is today.
Before the Cableway was established, the only way up Cape Town‟s iconic mountain was by foot – a climb undertaken only by adventurous souls, such as the famous Capetonian, Lady Anne Barnard. By the late 1870s, several of Cape Town‟s more prominent (and possibly less fit) citizens had suggested the introduction of a railway to the top. Plans to build a rack railway were proposed, but implementation was halted by the outbreak of the First Anglo-Boer War in 1880. By 1912, engineer HM Peter was commissioned by the Cape Town City Council to investigate options for a public transport system, and a funicular railway from Oranjezicht through Platteklip Gorge was suggested. In a referendum on the matter, the vast majority of Cape Town‟s residents voted in favour of the funicular – despite the staggering cost of £100 000 (an immense amount of money in those days). Plans for this were halted once again by the outbreak of the First World War, before a Norwegian engineer named Trygve Stromsoe suggested a cableway in 1926.

Chef Julia Hattingh‟s 18-seat table d‟hôte restaurant in Observatory serves a 5-course chef‟s choice dinner and is, in her own words, her “daydream come true”. At the dinners (that are frequently booked weeks in advance), Hattingh displays her skills, gained with time spent in local and renowned French kitchens, through intensely flavourful dishes. The menus rotate often and are crafted to pair with a selected winery‟s offering – a new winery is chosen every few weeks. The simplicity of presentation sometimes belies the numerous steps in preparation, with several slowcooked dishes having begun their lives the day before.

The illustrious 160-year old lady has been given a second youth, a coiffe and polish that sees her Georgian structure and Victorian fretwork shining. She knows a club of note when she sees one, The Cape Town Club having had its time there, and gracefully survived a serious blaze just after The Stack moved in. She is back, she has a story to tell and a lot longer life to live yet. The Stack was born on a fragrant afternoon in the monsoon season. MANTIS MTHEMBU LODGE Visiting the KZN Big Five reserve at a time when the relentless poaching of rhinos attracts global attention, brings guests full circle to where the struggle to save the rhino started, although marked as near extinction. Through his multiple efforts, on the ground in this area, and through the strong international conservation and wilderness organisations he initiated, the genetic base of the white rhino grew and diversified, and its numbers grew back to the 20,000 mark. To many, Dr Player became the figurehead of eco-tourism and of rhinoconservation, even as he spread his ethos to protect many other endangered species across the globe. Steeped in tradition and a history of rich culture, the big 5 reserve has much to offer guests on a trip of your lifetime. The reserve was originally the hunting ground of King Shaka Zulu, who was infamous for his military style tactics in thwarting enemy forces and keeping his own clans obedient. Yet his legacy saw sustainable hunting and a special relationship between humans and nature. This is seen through the efforts of the descendants of the two Chieftaincies after which the lodges are named: Biyela and Mthembu. This Lodge, even more intimate with only 22 beds, has a different character, although equally luxurious. Situated somewhat eye level off the river, it has a panoramic view of the White iMfolozi River. The lodge boasts 7 individual Private Villas, and 2 two Bedroomed Family Villas. One with a private plunge pool. The main Lodge guests can enjoy an outside bar, pool, restaurant and viewing decks. Contact Us Tel: +27 35 161 0300 mthembu.manager@umfolozibig5.com

Pakamisa Private Lodge In August 1996 Isabella Stepski fell in love with the unspoilt Pakamisa Mountain in Northern KwaZulu-Natal. By September the land was bought and then the hard work began! In the first year they established the infrastructure with 52kms of dirt roads, and secured the 2,500 hectare park with 24kms of fencing. Pakamisa Private Game Reserve, which was once a cattle farm, is now pristine Savannah and Bushveld. In December 1997 the superior stables were completed and Isabella‟s precious Arabian stud horses, imported from Spain, were in residence. Perched on the edge of a magnificent mountain range, the „Spanish Ranch meets African Bush‟ styled lodge took four years to construct. Local stone and materials were hauled up the perilous dirt road, and finally in January 2001 the elegant lodge, reflecting Isabella‟s warm personality, welcomed its first guests. Isabella has stocked the reserve with indigenous animals, steering clear of predators and dangerous beasts such as buffalo, to allow guests, horses and animals to live in safety and harmony. Pakamisa is a private, exclusive reserve open to residential guests only. Majestically perched on the high plateau of the Pakamisa Mountain, the lodge has breathtaking views of the evergreen valleys and plains of the Pongola River to the east and the rolling hills of natural bush of the Reserve in the west. Limited to a maximum of 16 guests, the lodge offers a unique Spanish architecture, blended with the finest African ambience. The Karkloof Nature Reserve was created in 1983 when Timothy Hancock entered into a long-term lease with the Natal Parks Board (now Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife), where the 410ha Rockwood Farm was leased to the NPB for R1.00 per year, the intention being to offer some sort of protection to a highly threatened area. The greater Karkloof area has been identified as having significant value due to its biodiversity and has been earmarked for conservation by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife. Currently, the reserve consists of about 60% mist-belt forest / 40% mist-belt grassland and ranges from 1000m to 1767 m above sea level. This results in a significant number of endemic and near-endemic species of fauna and flora, including the Karkloof Blue butterfly (Orachrysops ariadne), and a sub-species of crested guinea fowl. The lodges offer luxury self catering accommodation to those who appreciate the natural beauty and tranquility of an indigenous African forest. Bushbuck, Blue Duiker and Samango monkeys are frequent camp visitors. Birdwatching on the forest fringes can offer some excellent rewards. Some of the more elusive species found are the Cape Parrot, Narina Trogon, Crested Guinea Fowl and the Crowned Eagle. For the adventurous, there are a number of activities including mountain biking, fishing, swimming (in natural pools) or the famous Karkloof Canopy Tour which offers a thrilling way to learn more about our forests while hanging 40m above the ground. 101 Florida Road, Morningside, Durban 4001 South Africa Call us: + 27 31 502 4043 reservations@rockwood.co.za

Close to the southern shores of the Pongolapoort (Jozini) Dam, in the Bird Sanctuary part of the Biosphere, and overlooks the western escarpment of the majestic Lebombo Mountains and the endless savannah woodland of northern Zululand. The Pongolapoort Dam, with its variety of wildlife, is referred to as a miniKariba. Some of the animals which may be seen include elephant, buffalo, rhino, leopard, giraffe and many species of antelope. The dam is home to hippos, crocodiles and of course, the fighting TIGER FISH! The dam covers approximately 16 000 hectares with a river stretch of approximately 5km. Fishing takes place from boats and we support the “catch and release” method. The tigerfish population here is ever growing with decent specimens only starting to appear in the early nineties. A record specimen was caught in 1998 weighing 8.3kg and some in the 5 – 7kg ranges are still being caught. Average size is still under a kilo and specimens up to 4kg are quite possible in a 3-day fishing trip. One never tires trying to tackle the tiger, be it the hard bony jaws, big teeth, sheer cunningness or remote areas. Their fantastic skill to bite through a lure/bait is what makes them such an exciting fish to catch. An average of 4:1 is expected when fishing for tigers. They attack from the side, then turn the bait around and swallow it headfirst. Call us: Nkonkoni Fishing Camp Jozini Dam, Mkuze, 3965 +27 8255 222 02 nyathiholdings@mwebbiz.co.za

The Isibindi experience is constant and authentic, this family owned business only includes lodges we own; we don't represent other properties. The family and their dedicated team have designed every detail of your game, lake, beach and river safari from the camp's birth to your welcome arrival. An Isibindi journey is experiential with meaningful engagement with the essence of a place and its people. The founders of Isibindi Africa Lodges, Brett and Paige Gehren, both come from a strong conservation background. This has and always will be our authenticity. Twenty five years ago we began with pioneering community conservation establishing one of South Africa's first lodges in a protected wilderness sanctuary with the local community as joint shareholders. Today we own a number of lodges scattered around Africa in world-renowned protected wilderness areas and we partner with many neighbouring communities. Our purpose is to create a human fence between our wilderness areas and neighbouring communities so that the flow of benefits to these communities motivates them to protect these resources. Neighbouring communities need to share in these flow of benefits. Without this they have not only lost their ancestral lands but also access to its resources. When travelling with Isibindi you will be supporting a host of community projects that rely on the lodges you will be visiting, to flourish and improve people's lives. Lidiko lodge is a lodge with personality. The charming thatched roof colonial building, which today houses the reception area, guest lounge and art gallery, was one of the first residences to be built in St.Lucia in the “County of Zululand” in the late 1930‟s. The two family/triple rooms are also part of the original building. Doors salvaged from the wreck of the S.S.Timavo were built into the original building of the lodge in the early 1940‟s. The Timavo was a 7500-ton passenger liner owned by the Italian Loyd Triestino Company. During World War 2, on the morning of 10 June 1940, Italy declared war on the Allies. TheTimavo was in Durban Harbor and slipped out to sea in an attempt to reach Mozambique, which was a neutral country. South Africa declared war on Italy on 11 June 1940. Early that morning the Timavo was spotted beyond Leven Point, north of Cape Vidal. The patrol aircraft signaled the Timavo to stop. The ship‟s Captain decided to run his ship ashore, rather than have it captured by the British. The crew abandoned their ship and walked north making for Mozambique.

This piece of landscape inspired his iconic masterpieces, arguably the most prolific landscape art by a South African artist. They were spirited and dramatic, one-of-akind and unforgettably gripping. Jacobus Hendrik (Henk) Pierneef, or just „Pierneef‟ as the world would come to know him, called the place of „Elangeni‟ – where sunshine is at the gate. And it is at this exact gate, under the same trees, in that same light, on Pierneef‟s very foundations that our story begins… Your hosts, Annette and Chris de Beer welcome you to Pierneef‟s Kraal guest house, situated on two hectares of fertile, historically significant land, located towards the east of South Africa‟s capital city, Pretoria. The Great Master regrettably no longer tends to the indigenous gardens he so painstakingly created, but every effort was made by us to bring to life the qualities, so ingrained in his seminal work: originality, simplicity and, of course, beauty.

Meet me at The Fairway Nestled away in the heart of the leafy suburb of Randpark you will find the beautiful Fairway Hotel Spa & Golf Resort. We recently had the pleasure of spending a night over at The Fairway Hotel & Spa, and what a truly wonderful treat it was. Attention to detail is clearly a top priority on meet and greet and we felt like we had just arrived home. Generous servings of fresh juice, flavoured water and muffins were offered to us whilst we checked in and the fireplace added that extra bit of romance to the rainy weather outside. The Fairway Spa overlooking the golf course offers every bit of pampered luxury you could wish for. Attentive therapists take the extra time to ensure you are comfortable throughout your treatment, leaving your mind, body and soul completely rejuvenated. Our luxurious bedroom with beautiful views of the golf course and roaming peacocks boasted every bit of opulence and tranquillity you could wish for including a complimentary mini bar. Dinner in the fine dining Balata Restaurant was a culinary delight, the rainy weather and crackling fireplace provided the perfect romantic palette. The menu offers a variety of dishes to suit every taste bud. Under the leadership of Chef Jean-Pierre Siegenthaler every dish from the Beef Carpaccio, succulent Rib-Eye to the ‟to die for‟ Amarula Malva dessert left us with a promise of „we shall return‟ satisfaction. What‟s a stay over at the Fairway without their scrumptious buffet breakfast? Croissants, pastries, imported cheeses, cured meats, smoked salmon, fluffy eggs, fresh juices, aromatic coffee, the generous array is endless……and we certainly dined like royal kings…. If your crazy schedule is getting you down and you‟re in desperate need for a quick time-out without having to drive for miles to reach, think no further than the Fairway Hotel & Spa tucked neatly away in suburbia. The inspiration behind Craft was driven by two nostalgic individuals, Jo Pinheiro & Chris Mandos, in a quest to develop a unique restaurant with words such as hand made, old school, authentic, attention to detail, artisanal and personal as a major part of the Craft vocabulary. "People want to be taken back to an era when one only bought ingredients and not mass produced meals, an era when craftsmen took immense pride in their vocations and things were made with love rather than measurement, with care rather than science, an era when quality and individuality was a common given". The focus is on individuality and hospitality and doing things old school in a modern way. The look has a hint of Steampunk complimented by natural elements: antique mirrors, natural woods, natural leathers, bentwood chairs, deep buttoned leather couches, face brick, parquet flooring, copper, stainless steel and retro tiles.

Senorita Sufuentez and Gordo were living in London. An odd place to be introduced to the intricacies of Mexican food, but the place nonetheless. Forever fans of tequila, their hearts were open to the barrage of burrito bars and Mexican eateries and oh how they indulged. As they were driving down through Africa on their way back home, Senorita and Gordo reminisced over fire-roasted cheesy quesadillas and killer guac about tequila-fuelled nights with friends. The Mayan moon shone a bit brighter, the planets aligned and (cue angel song) new paths were planned. Luckily for them, the most excellent Veektor Sufuentez and Thompadre were vibeing on the same vibes down here back in the motherland. Mad Mexicans through and through, they too had a yearning for a Mexican revolution. The four decided to band-of-brother it up.
