Glenelly Stellenbosch ―Since my childhood in the heart of Bordeaux‘ finest vineyards till today, I have travelled the world and discovered the amazing diversity of terroirs. On my first visit to Stellenbosch I knew that this was where I wanted to fulfil my dream of starting a new adventure outside of France. In 2003, and after visiting many vineyards, I recognised the amazing potential of Glenelly Estate. I also believed in continuing the French heritage of wine making in South Africa going back more than three centuries.‖ My vision is to establish Glenelly as a worldclass estate, producing award-winning wines with power, elegance and balance.‖ Wines are made to pair with food and The Vine Bistro, headed by Chef Christophe Dehosse, offers a French-inspired dining experience. The interior decor is warm and elegant and includes a harmonious mix of 19th century chairs, classic Parisian tables, a contemporary cellar, a fireplace for the winter, leather banquettes and a traditional bar. Outside on the terrace or under the pergola, long wooden tables, a water feature, plants and a petanque court invite long lazy afternoons enjoying the picturesque views of our estate. Building on the success of his first three established eateries — Chefs Warehouse and Canteen on Bree Street, Thali in Gardens and Chefs Warehouse at Beau Constantia — chef Liam Tomlin has created a taste experience that matches the magnificent setting of the Maison Estate. Under the guidance of Tomlin, dynamic young chef David Schneider uses fresh ingredients, based on seasonal availability, to create a global tapas inspired menu that incorporates a world of different flavours in one, multicoursed meal. Expect the unexpected.
Luke Dale-Roberts of The Test Kitchen fame has partnered in a joint venture with his wife, Sandalene Dale-Roberts, his top chef Wesley Randles and manager Simon Widdison to open The Shortmarket Club in a heritage building just off vibey Bree Street. The excitement around the food and the venue is palpable, and The Shortmarket Club has already created a buzz in the Mother City ahead of its opening on 27 June. Dale-Roberts is justifiably proud of this new venture: Im extremely excited about what this will bring to the City Bowl, he says.

I was born and raised in Addis Ababa, a city located 2300m above sea level, where the sun shines pleasantly and feeds you with warmth, even on chilly days. During my childhood I smelled the aromas and tastes of our traditional food as it was prepared with delicious spices, fresh ingredients and of course Teff - one of the world's oldest grains. Before we milled the Teff’s tiny grains, which provide us with so much of what we need for our daily diet, we would expose it to the sun. It was always a beautiful sight to behold. A part of daily life as a child that I remember vividly. I would admire it with wonder, while at the same time vigilantly keeping an eye out for opportunistic chickens, birds and cows.

Seafood is the name of the game here, and a very good job they do of it, too. You’ll want to start with some fresh oysters, naked or dressed – and it’s a great opportunity to improve your shellfish education: order a Saldanha and Knysna oyster side by side and compare. They do a popular half-price oyster happy hour twice daily (12-1 and 5-6), which only adds to the appeal. But the starter menu also offers items like hake ceviche, an oyster po’boy, and a tangy little anglefish taco to whet the appetite. Mains range from accessible items like the (very popular) hake and chips, a couple of seafood curries and a SeaBreeze Caesar salad, to more exotic dishes like whole grilled bream, as well as grilled swordfish with a fresh green herby pesto, new potatoes and broccolini.

Leopard Mountain In 1997 our family realised their dream of owning and running a Safari Lodge! With no previous experience in hospitality, but a great passion for conservation and a drive to give exceptional service to guests, we embarked on our journey to create an outstanding family-run lodge in Zululand. The lodge was built by the family with stone and locally sourced materials with the help from the community members who were brought in and taught how to build. In 2003 Clive Vivier began sharing his dream of creating a large conservation area with our neighbours. Giving birth to the 56 000 acre Manyoni Private Game Reserve.
The years that followed saw a flurry of exciting introductions creating a haven for the big five and endangered species like black rhino and wild dog. In 2017, we celebrated 20 years of hard work from our dedicated team of 40 incredibly professional staff, led by Ryan and Joe Vivier. Our extended family are passionate about what they do and embrace the values and ethos that Leopard Mountain lives by. We have enjoyed over 20 years of amazing guests that have visited Leopard Mountain time and time again and who appreciate what makes our piece of heaven so unique. Makakatana Bay Lodge Makakatana Bay Lodge is named after a Zulu Chief called "Chief Mhakhakhathana", who lived in the area many years ago. The Makakatana Bay Lodge logo of the crab was used because the land on which the lodge currently lies had an old concrete block house built on it by Hugh's grandfather, John Kemp Morrison (Jock) who used it to store fish and crabs in the early 1900s. The 'crab' house was later left abandoned due to the severe heat of summer and due to the banning of commercial catching of the crabs and when the Lodge was built it was initally used as a wine cellar. We have since put the old building into retirement due to invading fig tree roots.
James (Jimmy) & Ursula Morrison lived at Makakatana for 50 years before moving to Ballito, on the KwaZulu Natal north coast, where Ursula Morrison still lives. Ursula Morrison has written some wonderfully rich memoirs of the history behind Makakatana.
On 27 april 1897 St Lucia was declared a game reserve. The conservation area was a 35'000 hectare lake with a 1km strip of land surrounding the lake. At a later stage other conservation areas were added. On 1 December 1999 UNESCO declared the lake and adjacent coastal areas a world heritage site. The 328'000 hectare reserve was South Africa‘s first world heritage site and encompasses 5 five major ecological zones. Makakatana Bay Lodge remains the only privately owned lodge situated within this World Heritage Site.

The capital and chief port of the Messenia regional unit, it lies along the Nedon River at the head of the Messenian Gulf. Ancient Greek civilization has contributed to many parts of today's society. The teachings and doings of ancient Greeks have remained important lessons that many societies still base their own laws and ethics. INTERNATIONAL SMASH HIT “STOMP” TO BASH AND CRASH ITS WAY BACK TO SA
Where rhythm speaks every language … From London and Paris to Las Vegas and New York STOMP makes music with brooms, matchboxes, hands and feet, poles, chairs, sinks, basketballs, newspapers and more, climaxing with the exhilarating trademark bins routine, where metal trashcans become drums and dustbin lids become combat shields. The encore engages the audience in a call and response that proves rhythm is a universal language. This wildly entertaining international show heads to South Africa later this year opening at Montecasino‘s Teatro on Tuesday, 13 August for a four week season ending on Sunday, 08 September 2019. Thereafter STOMP moves to Cape Town, on stage at Artscape from Wednesday, 11 September to Sunday, 22 September 2019. Tickets are available only from Computicket, the show‘s exclusive authorised ticketing agent. The show is brought to this country by leading local show promoter, Showtime Management in association with BBC First. STOMP finds beauty and music in the mundane. It turns brooms into instruments and handclapping into a conversation; the junk and clutter of urban life becomes the source of infectious rhythm and wonder. The highly talented performers take the audience on a journey through sound, where rhythm is the only language. Guaranteed to make your heart pound as the infectious rhythms of 8 brilliantly synchronised STOMP performers beat truck inner tubes, rubber hosing, Zippo lighters, plastic bags, metal dustbins, bin lids, tubs, water butts and, yes, even the kitchen sink! And then there are the brooms that are turned into soft shoe partners. STOMP is a unique combination of percussion, dance and physical comedy: seen by over 12 million people worldwide, there have been long running productions in London, Paris, Las Vegas, Boston and San Francisco, with the flagship New York still running, now celebrating its 25th year. There are up to 4 STOMP productions around the globe at any given time. STOMP has been touring the globe for 26 years, playing over 20 thousand performances in 55 countries on 6 continents. STOMP also performed in London‘s West end for 15 years. Created in Brighton, UK, in the summer of 1991, STOMP was the result of a ten year collaboration between its creators, Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas. The popularity of STOMP continually grew from strength to strength resulting in the cast performing live at the 1996 Academy Awards (the Oscars) to an estimated audience of almost 1 billion worldwide. The largest assembly of STOMP performers ever (40 performers from 12 different countries) was brought together for a specially choreographed appearance at the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games. Matchboxes, brooms, garbage cans, Zippo lighters and more fill the stage with energizing beats at STOMP, the inventive and invigorating stage show that's dance, music and theatrical performance blended together in one electrifying rhythm. The show toured South Africa in 2010 to critical acclaim and sold out performances. ―The sizzling energy of STOMP is beyond infectious‖ says Hazel Feldman of Showtime Management, the show‘s local promoter. ―Almost a decade later we welcome STOMP back this country to share its unique and energetic artform while introducing it to a new generation of theatre-goers.‖

Conservation In a place where nature plays an intricate design in the upkeep and growth of a land, there is also a need for life and death to play a complementary role in a lands existence. The Madikwe area is steeped in myth and legend and its cultural- pull dates back to the Stone Age and draws many tourists to its land. Madikwe Game Reserve is testimony to the preservation of a special wilderness area dedicated to one of the more remote areas in South Africa. Located in the transitional zone between the bushveld ecological area of Southern Africa and the Kalahari thornveld region, it is home to an abundance of wildlife. This however, was not always the case. Operation Phoenix was one of the largest relocations of wildlife on earth by humans. More than 8000 animals were transported over a period of seven years for the purpose of establishing an economically viable wildlife sanctuary. The reserve is currently divided into two prominent areas. North of Molatedi Dam is fenced and is home to indigenous wild animals, including the Big 5. Future developments should see the dam area fenced separately and stocked with smaller animals which depict less of a threat to tourists. This will allow visitors to use the dam area separately to the main reserve of Madikwe and will allow a free- flow of visitors without the threat of dangerous animals. Current Affairs Today the park is home to the Big 5, which can even be extended to the ‗Super 7‘, which includes the African Wild Dog and the Cheetah. More than 250 species of birds have been recorded in the park. For the visitor, the park is widely accessible and today boasts numerous lodges and camps to choose from. The visitor also plays a role in the sustainability and economic upkeep of the area. Investment and job creation in the area is a step forward towards creating new opportunities for businesses and eradicating poverty. This process has already been observed and Madikwe Game Reserve has become one of South Africa‘s success stories. Placing people at the centre of conservation efforts is the number one priority when planning the development and constant improvement of the park. A new development for Madikwe Game Reserve as well as the popular Pilanesberg National Park is the ‗Heritage Park‘ conservation corridor; set to join the two parks. The project has been proposed to allow for a larger migration area thereby creating a prime eco- tourism destination. The proposed 2- year initiative will link up Botswana with the Limpopo province. Community-Based Wildlife Madikwe Game Reserve‘s primary objective differs somewhat to other Game Reserves, which focus primarily on wildlife and conservation. The Reserve is not solely a conservation area or a tourist destination; it is also a major social and economic hub. Madikwe was established in the early 1990‘s as a result of an economic analysis, which explored two land use options; Big Five ecotourism and extensive cattle farming. The outcome of this analysis was that area was most suited to wildlife tourism and this would lead to more employment opportunities than the agriculture options for which the area is suited. The focus at Madikwe is to stimulate a three-way partnership between the state, the private sector and the local community in order to create ecologically sustainable economic activity for the benefit of the people of the region. The role of the private sector is to establish and manage a variety of tourism developments and activities within the reserve. In order to do this, private companies will pay the State concession fees. A portion of these fees is used by the state for conservation within the Reserve and the other portion is paid to local communities in order to fund a variety of community-based projects. Not only do the community benefit from the community-based projects, but also from the employment opportunities created in and around the Game Reserve.
Spending a Weekend with the Pride
Tau Game Lodge is one of those places which leave you feeling totally rejuvenated, refreshed and energised. On entering the Tau gate you immediately feel and exciting journey is about to begin. Sun kissed grass swishing in the crisp winters breeze makes you wonder what lies in the savannah, could the ―King of the bush‖ be basking just behind those trees? From the main Tau entrance gate it takes a mere 7 minutes slow drive to the lodge. The warm hospitality and the greeting of friendly staff welcome you to this little slice of heaven. The entrance tastefully decorated with modern furnishing, and a warm reception area where you may lounge to your heart‘s content (usually the gathering area prior to your game drive) is where our adventure began. The team at Tau really do go the extra mile in ensuring your stay is met with warmth & comfort. We were told on many occasions to just relax and enjoy, which of course was exactly what we were looking forward to do. We arrived at Tau just in time for check in which is at 14:00, our bags were whisked away to our chalet and we were directed to the lunch deck where a delicious feast awaited. Being a herbivore I wondered whether my dietary needs would be satisfied?
Oh and how wrong I was. The culinary team at Tau fed me like a king. The chef came personally to our table, introduced himself and explained what was in store for me which I honestly could not wait to tuck into. I was famished and eagerly awaited the meal ahead.
After hearing what chef had planned for the rest of the day I thought it best to try and keep it light of which I chose the Greek salad. Wow and what a salad it was, my co-pilot (Martin) tucked into a creamy mushroom pasta which I could not help but take a couple fork fills of. Lunch was served on the deck with an audience of Zebra, impala, wildebeest and a plethora of bird life oblivious of our presence. On check in we were informed that we were going to be hosted by Darren our field guide for our stay. I had noticed Ernest another field guide speaking with guests and I went over to greet and congratulate him on his most joyous occasion (recently getting married). Ernest took the initiative on rescheduling us to be with him over our stay which personally was such a nice touch. Ernest informed us that our night drive was to commence at 15:30 sharp so we literally had about 20 minutes to freshen up in our beautiful chalet. Walking into chalet number 6 we were greeted with luxury, all the comforts of home plus the spectacular view of the Tau waterhole. We had arrived! In my opinion there is nothing more beautiful than waking up to the sounds of the bush a mere 5 meters from your deck! The bathroom boasting an enormous corner bath and a star lit outside shower (which of course I made full use of even though winter had made the atmosphere rather fresh).
The Epic Safari Having had Ernest (Our Guide) before I knew we were in for a treat, his passion speaks for itself! He answered all our questions and taught us something new about each animal and the environment which they reside. Excitement wasn‘t far away, after a mere 10 minutes into the drive we headed after one of the largest of the big 5, Elephant. Such a gentle giant if not provoked and of course Ernest being careful not to disturb the ellies evening graze. Soon thereafter our adventure took a delightful turn, a radio message of wild dog sighting came through, they had been spotted running along the fence line looking for the rest of their pack, off we went. I was so excited because wild dogs are one of my favourite animals in the bush. We were privileged enough to witness something so magical, the joining of a pack, tweets and chirps were echoing around us, the dogs running around almost in a frenzy as they welcomed each other making the pack grow to 7. Just before sunset we stopped for sun-downers where Ernest chose a beautiful location to, stretch our legs and enjoy either something alcoholic or non-alcoholic and make use of the bush toilette... the tree. Dinner time was yum time After our epic safari Martin & I were ravenous we were both looking forward to something warm as the evening had turned cold. Chef had prepared a 3 course plated meal. We started off with a hearty Dahl soup which could be accompanied by a selection of, gluten free, seeded or plain breads.
The main course for the carnivores was, a choice of beef rump, eland or ostrich fillet of which martin chose the eland and I was treated to a scrumptious stir fry. Dessert was a selection of sweet treats which was served at the buffet table, chocolate bark, bread and butter pudding, warm custard, fresh fruits and a selection of cheeses.
We were both exhausted after such a perfect day and a delicious hearty meal Our heated room was warm and cosy and our beds neatly turned down, curtains drawn and pillows calling our tired heads. We slept like little lambs! I personally never need a wakeup call, knowing that another safari adventure was around the corner. The mornings are really nippy in Madikwe during winter so I suggest packing a snug jacket, beanie and a pair of gloves. However attention to detail and the comfort of their guests Tau ensures each guest receive a wrapped hot water bottle and warm Lion print blanket on their seat. Our weekend in the bush was a truly delirious experience ticking off all the expectations of spectacular sightings, gourmet feastings, skilled, knowledgeable and experienced field guides, and gracious and attentive staff and management. To end off our time at Tau, Martin and I decided to indulge in one of their spa treatments, where treatments are done in an oasis in the bush. There is something magical about the Madikwe Game Reserve. Its beauty leaves you in absolute awe! The Weekend Magazine was privileged to spend some time with the team at Jaci‘s Tree Lodge situated near the Molatedi Gate of the reserve. On arrival my soul knew I was in for a real treat and by chance was greeted unexpectedly by Jaci herself. We (Martin & I) were welcomed with smiles even though we were late for our evening game drive having put our faith in Google which became a periodic connectivity issue (rolling my eyes at technology). ―Don‘t worry about a thing‖ were the words I remember. Just go and enjoy your adventure. I didn‘t need to be told twice, we grabbed some warm clothing and jumped with both feet onto the back of the vehicle and off we went. After many years visiting the Madikwe area I knew what spectacular sightings awaited us. I felt sue that Martin would be left in absolute awe with the sheer variety of flora and fauna the park had to offer. Lion, Elephant, Buffalo, White Rhino and a plethora of antelope greeted us within the first hour MAGIC is all I can say my soul beaming with joy! Ending off our exciting drive we stopped for our sun downers which of course Jaci‘s does oh so well! The location romantic and the air crisp, what more could you wish for on a weekend adventure? By the time we headed off I was feeling rather peckish, not knowing what lay in stall for us at dinner! Returning to the lodge we were yet again greeted with smiles and a lovely hot towel scented with peppermint to wipe the dust off our hands and warm the lids of our eyes. Delicious aromas wafted through the air engulfing our nostrils for the feast ahead.

Being vegetarian always leaves me wondering if I would be satisfied with the serving. Let me tell you I was fed oh so very well! Dinner started off with a delicious Sweet potato and cumin soup which on such an icy evening warmed our inners. Martin joined me on the mains (creamy butternut risotto) which the chef personally came and inquired as to our dietary requirements. After dinner we headed to our room. It was like stepping into a dream, a warm heated room with luxurious fittings vibrant warm colours and a kings bath which was carved out of stone ( the invitation of which was sealed for both my nights stay). The tree house –like- chalets are tastefully decorated, leaving nothing out of place and offering all the comforts of home. As I was dosing off there was a familiar sound echoing nearby….. I shook martin awake saying … DO YOU HEAR THAT? It was a lone hyena calling into the night. The eerie calls sent tiny shock waves of excitement through to our very core. In other words my first night in Madikwe was spectacular! I had already risen the next morning before our wake- up call eager for our morning safari! Making our way through to the main area a delicious aroma of Arabian coffee a selection of teas awaited us, in addition hot oats and fruits where on offer to satisfy hunger pangs. If you have not visited Madikwe in the winter months let me warn you, it is bitterly cold in the mornings and thankfully Jaci‘s take special care and attention in providing the guest on a game drive with a hot water bottle wrapped in a soft blanket (nothing better to warm the hands, and in my case lap). Pablo Eggs-Go-Bar This one is for early bird and late risers. Order your eggs your way, get your health on with any of our fresh pressed juices and enjoy the rustic decor that Pablos offers in the buzzing community on 7th. Really enjoyed the food here. A plethora of playful interpretations of eggs benedict. Packed full of flavour. Prepared to precise texture. Impressive! Good service. The only criticism would be the lack of temperature control (got quite hot especially with midday breakfast being served). Otherwise superb! This place after 3 years still has queues outside at 11am on a Saturday morning, so that should be good enough reason to give 5 stars. It is an institution by now, top of main street Melville. The eggs are as good as ever and with a name like Eggs-go-bar, what else do you expect but egg dishes. The long communal tables inside are a nice touch if you cannot get table seating. The staff are attentive and the service good. Will be back again.

We aim to introduce Ethiopian food to the broader public like other mainstream food that anyone can come in and eat at any time. Ask anybody, ―What does Africa mean to you?‖ and you‘re likely to provoke a strong response – good or bad. The truth is, Africa is not a continent that plays small or goes halfway, it is bold, unapologetic and wonderfully diverse. The world in a continent, Africa is many things to many people, but ultimately it is home when we acknowledge its significance as the birthplace of civilisation.

The ten villas provide the ultimate in space, design, comfort and privacy. David Livingstone famously named Lake Malawi ―The Lake Of Stars‖ and for good reason, during the day the light dances across the deep blue water and once the sun has set the stars twinkle brightly both in the sky but also on the lake as the fishermen light up their hurricane lamps for their night on the lake. Guests can relax on the sandy beach or enjoy an elevated view of the lake from the stylish infinity pool. For those seeking some activity we offer waterskiing, sailing, kayaking, walks in the hills, sunset cruises on our hand built dhow and snorkeling and diving. Mumbo Island Mumbo Island is a pristine and deserted tropical island floating on the expansive waters of the Lake Malawi National Park. With a maze of massive underwater boulders, innumerable species of colourful cichlid fish and calm, clear water, the National Park offers what many consider the best freshwater snorkeling and SCUBA diving in the world. Mumbo Island is only 1km in diameter and has never been populated so it remains in a pristine, natural state. Kayak Africa run Mumbo as an entirely off grid, green camp so that it remains as unspoilt and perfect as it has been forever. Enjoy sustainable tourism on remote uninhabited islands in the Lake Malawi National Park! Mumbo Island Camp, accommodating fourteen guests, features tastefully furnished tents with shaded decks, hammocks, hot bucket showers and ‗eco-loos‘, complemented by a dining area with bar and a watersport gazebo. The whole camp is built of timber, thatch and canvas, and is perched on high rocks overlooking the water, blending with the lush foliage to create a ‗Robinson Crusoe‘ atmosphere of rustic charm. The island is located within an exclusive concession area, guaranteeing privacy in tropical island paradise. Unlike many African lodges, the decor also maintains the ‗green‘ ethos; almost all the furnishings are locally sourced and made either in the village or in Malawi.
