YOUR DAILY HEALTH & FITNESS ROUTINE Our cover star Louise is passionate about health and wellbeing which inspired her to launch her website livelikelouise.co.uk, with the aim of helping people to turn their fitness dreams into a reality. When there are so many fad diet plans and workout routines available online it can be overwhelming when you want to take the first steps in eating a more nutritious diet, getting fitter and feeling better. Here are a few simple steps to help point you in the right direction, and put you on the path to improving your health.

The Best Ways to Train

Everyone has a favourite form of exercise, whether that’s going for a run, jumping in the pool or playing tennis, and while all exercise is good for you, just attacking the treadmill isn’t a guaranteed way to get the results you want. Exercise should be varied and done in combination with a good diet to really help you shift the stubborn extra pounds and make you stronger and fitter. You should also try to get into a good routine and aim to do around 3 sessions a week with at least 2 sessions focussing on a different area of the body or exercise method. It’s also important to find workouts that you enjoy, as you’ll find yourself far less likely to go to the gym if you hate what you’re doing.

Interval Training

Interval training is where your heart rate rapidly rises and falls in quick succession and there are different forms such as HIIT or High Intensity Interval Training. Here is a treadmill workout that’s good for beginners but can be adapted with higher speeds and greater inclines when you become more used to it.

www.theweekendpages.com

20 Minute Interval Treadmill Workout:

1. Your first 5 minutes should be focussed on warming up and getting ready for what’s to come so start off at a pace you’re comfortable with and gradually increase the speed or resistance. 2. For the next 3 minutes increase the speed and the incline by 1%, this should mean you’re starting to feel the effects more but you could still talk to someone. 3. Boost the intensity for 1 minute by increasing the incline by another 1-3% or raise it even more if you want to feel a bigger difference. 4. Ease off for 3 minutes by decreasing the incline and speed to a comfortable level. 5. Time for another boost, increase your speed by 3-5 increments for 1 minute. 6. Rest up again by spending 3 minutes at a more comfortable pace. 7. The last 4 minutes should be about slowing down ready to finish the workout. Gradually ease off the speed and incline until you finish with a regular walking pace.

Strength Training

Many people are scared of strength and weight training as they think it might build up their muscle mass too much, but strength training is a great way to gently boost and define any natural curves and help you lose weight. If you’re looking for stronger arms or a more sculpted bottom then strength training is your friend.

20 Minute Full Body Strength Workout

Do 12 sets of each exercise with 60 seconds of rest in-between each set. Aim to do about 4-5 sets or do as many sets as you can in 20 minutes. 1. Push Ups – Get into a plank position and bend your elbows and lower body towards the mat. Keep your elbows close to your torso and push through your palms to straighten your arms and lift yourself off the ground. 2. Reverse Lunge with Twist – Stand with your feet hip-width apart and hold a medium weight dumbbell at chest height. Step back with your left foot until you go into a lunge then twist your body to the right making sure to keep your core straight. Stand back up and repeat with the right leg and the opposite twist. Perform 6 repetitions of each direction to complete a full set. 3. Plank with T Rotation – Get into a high plank position with your arms outstretched on the ground and your feet hip-width apart. Rotate your body to the right and as you turn stretch your right arm out with it until it points to the ceiling and your right shoulder is in line with your left arm holding you up off the floor. Return to the starting position and repeat in the opposite direction. Perform 6 repetitions of each direction to complete a full set. 4. Squats – Using the dumbbell again at chest height stand with your feet hip-width apart and keep your back straight. Lower yourself down into a squat until you rest on your heels and don’t shift the weight to the balls of your feet. Return to standing and squeeze your glutes when you reach the top.

The Best Ways to Eat

1. There isn’t a one-size-fits-all diet that everyone can follow due to dietary requirements, intolerances or just personal taste, but there are a few simple pieces of advice to help you give your diet a nutritious boost and help you feel leaner and more energised. 2. Drink enough water – This may sound obvious, but not nearly enough people actually drink the NHS recommended amount of 8 8oz glasses a day. Remember the 8x8 rule and you can’t go wrong. 3. Cut back on sugar – Again, a seemingly obvious tip that people avoid. Make sure you read labels as many ‘low-fat’ or ‘diet’ foods and drinks are packed with sugar in order to reduce fat content. 4. Eat protein for breakfast – Eating a breakfast with some protein is a great way to keep you fuller for longer and give your body a kickstart in the morning. Think of boiled eggs with a slice of wholemeal toast, protein rich Greek yoghurt or nuts. 5. Replace your snacks – It’s important to still enjoy what you eat and have a good balance otherwise you’ll never stick to it, so you can still have some treats, but maybe save them for the weekend. If you can’t do without a packet of crisps with a sandwich look for lighter baked options or lower calorie crisps. Need a hit of chocolate? Mix a few dark chocolate buttons with nuts and berries for a sweet treat. 6. Boost your fiber intake – You don’t have to start chomping through a lettuce to increase your fiber intake, although eating more fruits and vegetables is a key way to do it. Even making changes like swapping white bread for fibre-rich wholemeal or seeded bread will make a difference.

TOP TIPS TO AVOID GYM INJURIES TO THE SHOULDER OR ELBOW Gym related injuries or pain to the shoulder or elbow are common in my practice so I thought I would share some tips on how you can avoid these problems and still take part in exercise.

1. Ensure proper technique, make sure you get a trainer to show you how to do exercises safely. As with most practical things in life proper technique is key. Many gyms offer an introductory session with a personal trainer to teach you how to use equipment safely but it is difficult to learn every exercise in one session and very easy to slip into poor form and bad habits when working out on your own. I would recommend checking in with a personal or gym trainer regularly to ensure your technique is safe especially if you are experiencing pain. Often just small adjustments in hand position can affect shoulder symptoms. 2. Be cautious with bench press, biceps curls, and lat pulldowns. While an injury can occur with any exercise done poorly, certain exercises are more prone to causing injuries around the shoulder and elbow. Pectoralis major tendon ruptures have many causes but the most common mechanism of injury is the bench press exercise. Shoulder position during this exercise and the amount of weight applied can increase the risk of injury. Biceps curls done with weight of greater than 68kg put the distal biceps tendon at the elbow at risk of rupture. Pull-downs (lat pull-downs) should be performed by pulling the bar toward the chest, pulling the par down behind the head and over the shoulders is a common mistake that can result in shoulder injuries. 3. Don’t overload the shoulder, increase weights sensibly, and listen to your body. Muscles, ligaments, tendons, and bone can adapt to increasing load as long as the increase in load is gradual, however, all tissues have their limit and if they are overloaded they will fail. Training and weightlifting programmes need to be sensible, safe and practical so again the advice of a trainer is useful in this regard. If increasing weight causes pain listen to your body, take a step back and go down to a lower weight before trying to gradually increase again. www.theweekendpages.com

Mr. Nick Ferran

4. If you develop pain during exercise stop and allow some time to recover. Recovery is an important part of training, exercise, and sport. Over-training without rest and recovery is unhealthy and risky so even without pain, a good training routine should have built in rest days. If pain or an injury is experienced during training, rest is key to allow tissues to settle and recover before trying to exercise again. Training through significant pain isn’t advised. 5. If pain persists even after rest or there is sudden bruising or swelling get checked to make sure your injury isn’t serious. If an injury or pain occurs during exercise and persists after a period of rest this would be a worrying sign. Sudden occurrence of weakness, bruising, swelling, or a change in shape of the muscles around the shoulder, elbow or chest after a gym injury could be a sign of tendon rupture. If any of these signs or symptoms occur I would strongly recommend seeking medical advice so that a serious injury is not missed. Shoulder & Elbow London Ltd. DON’T KNOCK ‘EM T

he welcome of the unseasonably pleasant autumn weather provides opportunity for us all to increase our physical activity. Whether a brisk walk during the daily commute, snatching a few minutes to enjoy a walk during lunch or undertaking exercises and sport, the benefits of activity are well established. As we enjoy these activities, perhaps a moment’s thought may be given to our long-suffering knees. The thigh bone (femur) and shin bone (tibia) balance on each other with a contact area less than the area of the palm. Through these pass our body weight and, because objects in motion exert greater forces, they are regularly tasked with carrying far more. Did you know, for example, that it has been estimated that when running, over five times our weight passes through the knee. To function and allow our bodies to balance on the knee, the joint is clothed in muscles and has over fifty named ligaments, (only a few of these have been shown to have important roles). There are also the lining cartilage surfaces of the joint and specialised rims of cartilage known as the menisci. A further vital structure is the knee cap (patella), without which even walking would be a lot more tiring. Understanding that so many factors are participating in the workings of our knee joint and the high-energy activities many of us engage in, it is perhaps unsurprising that on occasion the knee does cry with pain, stiffness and swelling a and suffer injury. The knee also may develop the symptoms of wear with time. Trying to avoid injury by stretching prior to exercise and gradually increasing exercise levels is advisable. If you develop symptoms at the knee, a period of relative rest, application of a cold compress and assessment by a doctor or physiotherapist can be helpful. Acute injuries may require attendance at the Emergency Department for more urgent treatment. The specialist assessment of an orthopaedic surgeon may sometime help clarify the diagnosis and direct suitable treatment. Only occasionally is an operation needed. SCREENING FOR DISEASE.

DOES THIS INCREASE YOUR LIFE SPAN? Screening is a mechanism where by patients, with no symptoms, but who have identifiable risk factors such as age, a strong family history or where there are environmental risk factors which pre dispose them to a condition, undertake an investigation, which identifies a disease process at an early stage. Screening ensures that treatment at this early stage of the disease process is minimally invasive, with minimal life style disruption. In order for screening to be sustainable there are certain criteria that have to be met. It should be a common condition. With an early dormant phase.

The investigation proposed should be easily reproducible and relatively non invasive. There should be a valid treatment for the condition, on establishing a diagnosis. The process should be cost effective. If one were to consider bowel cancer screening, a condition that is experiencing increasing publicity, screening has a proven history in the USA and Europe, where the incidence of bowel cancer is falling. The recommended age for screening has recently reduced to 45 in USA. It is currently 50 in UK. Identification of early disease, through the most accurate diagnostic tool colonoscopy, may result in polyp identification and removal. This considerably reduces the risk of developing bowel cancer. This is irrespective of whether there is a family history of colon cancer. Virtual colonoscopy is reserved primarily for elderly patients. FIT (stool analysis) is demonstrating early promise, as a screening tool. There are some disadvantages associated with screening. The diagnosis of a perceived abnormality, where no abnormality exists (false positives), which stimulates further investigation and promotes understandable anxiety. On rare occasions a diagnosis can be missed (a false negative) eg on a breast mammogram, which is why in a large number of centres, mammograms are read by 2 Consultant radiologists, to reduce error. Conditions that are routinely screened for in the UK include: Cervical Cancer, through smear testing. If an abnormality is detected, referral to a gynaecologist with a view to colposcopy is indicated. Breast Cancer, through mammography. If an abnormality is detected, referral to a breast specialist with a view to further image guided sampling is indicated. Colorectal cancer through stool (FIT) analysis and colonoscopy. In the presence of a positive FIT sample, colonoscopy is warranted. Any abnormality at colonoscopy such as a polyp, can almost always be removed through a therapeutic colonoscopy. Prostate cancer through PSA (blood) analysis. An elevated PSA, requires onward referral to a Urologist, with a view to image guided sampling.

www.theweekendpages.com

Abnormal skin moles require referral to a Dermatologist, with a view to towards excision or sampling. Fetal abnormality detection in pregnant women through ultrasound scan, will result in a referral to an Obstetrician, with a specialist interest in fetal development. LIFESTYLE ADVICE Consider screening to reduce your risk of developing a major long term concern. This is particularly pertinent, if there is a strong family history. In the majority of cases, the advantages are beneficial and the risk is minimal. Individuals that have symptoms, should undertake investigation, irrespective of age. The presence of normal investigations, can bring about significant reassurance and peace of mind. Why Vegan! There are many reasons why people choose to become vegan, with each motive personal to every individual. Although veganism is fundamentally about reducing harm to other

living beings, it is also beneficial to our own health and to the environment. So, why vegan? Let’s explore the reasons why everyone should adopt a vegan lifestyle. For the animals Globally, 55,000,000,00 animals lose their lives every year for human consumption. These animals are bred and exploited so humans can consume meat, fish, dairy, and eggs. Factory farms subject animals to harmful living conditions that can cause injury and death. In addition, during their transportation to, and in the moments before their slaughter, animals experience mental and physical harm. People choose vegan to prevent cruelty and unnatural death of animals. A plant-based diet is the first step to reducing harm to animals, but it doesn’t end there. Living a vegan lifestyle includes reducing harm to animals in all areas of our life, including clothing, beauty and cleaning products, and our entertainment choices. Animal testing is another form of animal cruelty. Not only is it

unreliable due to differences in DNA, but millions of animals are exploited and murdered annually. This process is cruel; with animals being injected or forced to eat or inhale substances that can cause serious harm, such as petrol, paints, and solvents. So, next time you pick up that mascara or tube of toothpaste, have a look at the label. Is it cruelty free? If so, wonderful! However, that doesn’t always mean the product is vegan-friendly - it may contain ingredients such as lanolin or milk, making them non-vegan (and not cruelty-free, if we’re being honest). With veganism, it is important we are not funding cruelty towards any being. For our health Going vegan doesn’t mean living off bland, boring food; there are lots of vegan alternatives for your favourite foods! You can still get your protein, iron, and vitamins through a vegan diet, which can be obtained directly from the source rather than the body, or by-product, of an animal. By going vegan, the risk of developing heart disease, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, and many more illnesses is reduced. Eliminating dairy can improve overall health, as the human body is not designed to digest milk from another animal – we aren’t baby cows after all. For the environment Veganism can help save Mother Earth from further destruction. The Amazon rainforest is being demolished at an alarming rate by farmers to make room for cattle and to produce soybeans to feed them; 70% of the world’s soybean production used to feed cattle, and 85% of land used for UK food supply is fed to livestock (if we must call them that). Raising animals for food accounts for at least 32,000 million tonnes of Co2 per year! So, go vegan! Veganism is the only lifestyle that avoids cruelty to animals, increases human health, and supports our planet. It’s the least we can do for our future – choose vegan! 25

Vegan All Sorts was launched in the hope that they could offer a vegan alternative to pick n mix and to be able to end the days of tasteless, soft and over priced vegan sweets. The famous Mega Bag was the first bag to hit the shelves and on the day of launch they sold over 250 bags. Some thought it was a fluke and others thought the buzz would die but here they are 4 months later and their sweets are being bought all over the world. They offer 8 variations of Mega Bags which weigh in at 800 grams and hands down taste better than any other sweets on the market. It is a bold statement to make but Vegan All Sorts is the market leader when it comes to vegan pick n mix in the world right now and with them just reaching a milestone of 30 thousand followers on Instagram in such a short period of time, it’s obvious that Vegan All Sorts is taking the world by storm. Their varieties include, the famous Mega Bag which is a mix of over 30 variations of sweets, the Fizzy Mega Bag, the Fizz Free Mega Bag, the Gluten-Free Mega Bag, the Cola Bag & the Mix BonBon Bag which is also gluten-free. It’s fair to say that when it comes to variety they have covered all angles and with the recent release of their Palm Oil Free range they have their followers or ‘’Vegan All Sorters’’ waiting on the edges of their seats for the latest release. We asked Dario & Casey the CEO’s of Vegan All Sorts where does this road lead and with the success of the launch how are you going to keep up the demand. ‘’I think that in the beginning it was a mixture of branding, social influence and passion which gave us the amazing start but after our products were sold they spoke for themselves. Our percentage of repeat customers really speaks volumes to us as it means we are doing our job well. We brought a breath of fresh air to the vegan market and we get numerous amounts of comments on a daily

Available in 8 mouth watering varieties !

basis on how people can’t believe how good our sweets taste. From here we plan to expand our range with a Palm Oil Free Mega Bag in the pipeline and also a Retro Bag we have so much up our sleeves. In terms of expansion I think with the mass amount of orders we get from Australia we want to find a way to capitalise on it without the damaging postage costs to our customers. Vegan All Sorts isn’t just a bag of sweets we, are now a brand and we want to take this further. We are in talks with coffee shops in and around London so who knows what the future holds, we just love what we do and can’t wait to see what it brings.’’ So what is the story behind the Sad Sweets? Since we launched Vegan All Sorts we have sold thousands of happy sweets to thousands of happy customers. Unfortunately, in the process of bagging the sweets a lot get broken and the sad sweets are left behind. Instead of throwing the Sad Sweets away we thought we’d find a way to re-home them. So we decided to launch our very own Sad Sweets to our product range. You may say it’s just a broken bag of Sad Sweets but it’s so much more. Sad Sweets are a way to limit our waste and a chance for our lovely Vegan All Sorters to save them from the dreaded dump. For your chance to win a bag, see our competitions that are run on our socials weekly. Other than this Vegan All Sorts also sell soaps, lip balms, Mini Mega bags and some amazing add ons which are growing by the day. Their bags are priced at £9.99 which is great value for money seeing as their Mega Bags weigh 8 times more than your high street brand and taste 10 times better. Go visit Vegan All Sorts and see what the buzz is about!

A REVOLUTION IN REFLUX Introducing a Simple, Safe Solution Constant coughing or throat clearing. A hoarse voice, sore throat and difficulty swallowing. A painful feeling of throat burn. Nighttime regurgitation. If these unpleasant symptoms are your nightly reality, it’s likely that you are one of the vast number of people struggling with acid reflux, and the sleep disruption that comes with it. You’ve probably taken medications, such as antacids and protein pump inhibitors. It’s likely that you’ve also tried out all sorts of restrictive diets, to try and keep the horrible symptoms in check. You’ve probably even thought about surgery. But despite these being the traditionally recommended responses to acid reflux, it’s probable that they’ve not been successful in halting your reflux, and that these options may well be causing considerable risks to your wider health. In this difficult arena, a radically different, yet ingeniously simple new solution has emerged, requiring no surgery, no pills, and no prescriptions. The Reflux Band is the first-of-itskind wearable device that reduces or eliminates night time acid reflux and throatburn, offering reflux sufferers a safe alternative that is clinically proven in study after study to really work. It’s simple, comfortable, and provides relief throughout the night and the next day. So what is acid reflux? The term laryngopharyngeal Reflux (LPR), or “silent reflux”, as it is often known, refers to the backflow of stomach acid all the way back up into the throat, voice box or lungs. The effects on the lives of its sufferers are severe and often long-term, and it can affect anyone, including

adults, pregnant women, and even babies, though it shows up more often as we age. Lifestyle issues such as poor diet, excessive alcohol or tobacco, or overeating can be factors, but for many people, physical causes such as a malfunctioning upper esophageal sphincter (UES) or hiatal hernia are at the root of the problem.

It’s a problem that affects around 30% of the U.S. population, and is commonly confused with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which can make it hard to diagnose. In the majority of cases, medications such as PPI pills are prescribed as the first line of defence, despite mounting evidence that they give limited relief for LPR. Even more worryingly, multiple studies have

found that long-term use of PPIs can lead to vitamin deficiencies, kidney damage, dementia, bone fracture, stroke, increased risk of heart attack and pneumonia, and also damage to the gut microbiota. In one such study last year, the British Medical Journal published a large-sample study that found long-term use of PPIs was correlated with a 25 percent higher chance of death. With traditional medical responses falling short of safely treating the problem, the Reflux Band offers a much needed alternative. Its unique design is the result of scientific and clinical research conducted over 20 years by a leading gastroenterologist, sparked by findings that showed that when external pressure is applied at the cricoid region of the neck, right below the Adam’s apple, reflux is kept from passing upwards to the throat, voice box and lungs. Hence the Reflux Band was born – a fully adjustable, comfortable band that is designed to be worn while you sleep, simply and effectively preventing acid reflux and its symptoms. The results have been startling, and the changes in the lives of its users widespread. Users report improved sleep, reduced or halted reflux symptoms, and rapid results, supported by a range of clinical studies backing up the maker’s claims. One such study shows significant symptom improvement from acid reflux after wearing the Reflux Band, with 86 percent of Reflux Band users seeing improvement within the first two weeks, and a 95% approval rate from physicians. For suffers of acid reflux, the conclusion is clear: it’s time for PPI medications to make way for the new solution. 35

Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty This must be one of my favourite treatments . It’s really quick, extremely predictable with a high success rate and best of all very little down time . The procedure itself takes approximately 10-15 minutes and normally you can see the results straight away . Doing this procedure daily has given Dr Whelan the expertise needed to really refine his technique to be extremely accurate, relatively pain free with minimal bruising and swelling . We have a very special offer at present for Non-surgical Rhinoplasty at £179 per ml ( normally only 1ml is needed per session ).

Jaw line profiling Dr Whelan has seen a dramatic increase in male patients over recent months as more and more men would like to get that 244 High Street, Potters Bar Hertfordshire, EN6 5DB mobilecosmeticconsultant

chiselled look .Having Jaw profiling done can be accompanied by cheek fillers too . A different technique is used by Dr Whelan whilst doing cheek fillers whereby fillers are placed along the cheek bone parallel to the jawbone to get that really strong chiselled look creating desirable symmetry. Jaw profiling to get that V shaped look is very popular with our female patients too . Jaw fillers definitely have a positive effect on that dreaded turkey neck look . Lending support to the skin (stimulating collagen ) it tightens the skin around the neck from the rim of the lower jaw ( mandible ) lessening the skin around the neck . Jaw profiling normally requires at least 2-4 mls and costs around ÂŁ179 per ml of filler at our award winning dental clinic at Potters Bar .

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW This month we caught up with the lovely Louise Thompson. Louise opens up on her anxieties and also gives us great advice on health and diet and how her new business is now helping thousands to get healthy and live a better life. LiveLikeLouise.co.uk

www.theweekendpages.com

Q. What age would you say you were when

you first realised you were suffering from anxiety?

A.

I had my first panic attack when I was around 10 during a science exam at prep school. I started to get really, really upset when I realised that I couldn’t finish my exam in time. I only had 5 minutes left and I still had 5 full questions to answer. I didn’t realise exactly what I was experiencing at the time but looking back retrospectively, it was definitely a panic attack - It was terrifying and unlike any sensation I’d felt before, and the worst part was that there was hardly any warning. I’ve had bouts of anxiety during different stages of my life. I remember another bad episode that occurred when I was studying at university, I was so anxious that I couldn’t leave my room for days at a time because I was scared of being in public and around people. This was pretty problematic considering I had lectures and presentations most days. Another time, I was working at Queen’s tennis club to earn money over the Summer holidays and I was in such a bad way that I collapsed on the third day and had to leave. I couldn’t return and finish my time there even though I desperately wanted to, I convinced myself that I couldn’t. I went to visit my local doctor because I genuinely thought I was dying - I didn’t know what was wrong with me so I insisted that they saw me and sent me for a brain scan. They asked whether I was experiencing any problems in my personal life and I immediately disregarded that suggestion because I thought I had my s*** together. I only started to fully understand the concept of anxiety when I was writing my book and delved deeper into my own mental health and my past. Before that I hadn’t given myself a chance to rationalise my thoughts or experiences because I was always so busy with different jobs, studying, socialising or being wrapped up with filming for the TV show. It was certainly hard trying to live a normal student life whilst travelling down to London 4 times a week to be on TV.

Q. Can you describe how it felt? A.

On the first occasion when I couldn’t complete the exam I felt all the blood pumping around my body incredibly fast. Then it reached my head which started pounding. I couldn’t see or think, lights started to seem really bright and I wanted to scream but I was surrounded by other people so I had to try and keep my feelings inside. I felt as though I must have looked

like I was going to implode to those on the outside. Then I ran out of the room. It was the most intense form of frustration combined with confusion. One of the big problems with mental health disorders is that people can’t see what is going on in somebody’s head. It is an invisible disease which often makes it harder to diagnose and to treat.

Q.

Can you tell us what steps you took to help improve how you were feeling?

A. I didn’t do anything for years because I never vocalised it. I had

also never heard or read about mental health when I was younger and everyone in my family was typically British in nature, meaning we didn’t discuss things like that. More recently I have started taking several small steps to keep my mental health in check: Exercising at least twice a week. Not touching my phone for an hour in the morning. Turning off phone notifications. Teaching myself how to say NO to people and invitations without feeling guilty about it. Trying to be more consistent with life (which can be hard when I have very little structure.) It’s better to do 20 minutes of exercise or activity a day, then 1 huge session every week or fortnight. I try to focus more on the people that matter that care about my best interests. I try to be very empathetic of other people’s feelings and emotions and remember that everybody is struggling with their own battles. I love to listen to very positive podcasts (I love Dr. Chaterjee.) I have a kick ass classical music playlist My assistant also bans me from using my phone on the weekends. I regularly talk to my brother or Ryan or any old uber driver who will listen about my problems. I believe that a problem shared truly is a problem halved. I just count myself lucky that now I have developed the confidence to be able to speak openly about the things that are going on in my head.

Q. Live like Louise, tell us a bit about it, where did it come from? A.I am extremely privileged to be in a position where I can reach

a lot of people across various social media platforms, so I thought it was important to share my story and my experiences struggling with mental health and ultimately my journey to finding a place of happiness. Fitness has been an integral part of my mental and physical transformation over the past 5/6 years and it’s something that we all have the capacity to do. For years I was working on Made in Chelsea and although I had a great deal of fun, I felt so restricted working for someone else. I left the show last year around Christmas time without a great deal of thought, celebration, press or general ‘hooo haaaa’ because it’s not in my nature to make a fuss, but I knew things had run their course and for the first time ever I wasn’t fearful about making a dramatic change. I decided to follow my passion and set up a business after just a month off. That was at the beginning of this year and It’s amazing what you can get done in 6 months if you channel ALL YOUR ENERGY into something. I never realised that I had so much to offer in terms of managing a business and I was also ignorant to that fact that I still had a great deal to learn about myself and about the world (which was impossible to do whilst I was wrapped in a bubble).

Our Live Like Louise platform now has over 7000 members, most of whom have already made huge gains in strength and confidence. I literally have the dream job because I get to help people every day and I truly believe that we offer unrivalled support. We are launching our app and our new and improved site in September which is very exciting and going to open up many more opportunities. Also check out our instagram page @Live.Like. Louise because I am big time prioritising that over my own page at the moment. It is a hub of health and fitness education.

Q.

You’ve started Pocket Sport; it all looks amazing, is this something you have always wanted to do?

is relaxed/horizontal. We knew from the outset what roles we were going to take on. He does a lot of the behind the scenes stuff that is integral to the business. He creates the programs (as the qualified one) and deals with customer service, and macronutrient consultations etc. I control more of the design aspects, development, content shooting, social media, and HR. Thankfully we have an amazing team that help us piece everything together because there is a lot that goes on behind closed doors in order to make our business function and to keep our clients 100% happy. With this scale of work there is NO WAY we would be able to manage everything on our own – at the moment we’re working from 7am till 10pm, 6 days a week.

I literally have the dream job because I get to help people every day.

A. I started Pocket Sport (initially called Pocket London,) when I

was at Edinburgh University. I always wanted to own a brand and run my own business so me and my guy friend set it up when we were quite young. It was a case of learning by doing because neither of us had studied business or fashion. I remember popping to NatWest on Princess Street to setup our business bank account one day and then having to meet with various important people in the City of London to get things started. I felt like such a novice. I even remember our first buyers meeting that we managed to wangle with the denim department at Selfridges. It was a slow burner at the beginning but now we run a fully functioning retail business. We made the transition from ladies Jeans into sportswear when we realised that I live in gym kit and rarely wear jeans because I’m ALL ABOUT COMFORT. Finally we have a product that I adore and live in daily. If your brand is going to go the mile then you have to LOVE your product – for ages I wasn’t convinced which made me a terrible ambassador. We have just designed our next collection for A/W and are aiming to bring it out a few months ahead of Christmas (we don’t stick to the conventional fashion deadlines lol), we do things out own way!

Back to answering your question, if you’re in a remotely firey or volatile relationship then I would NOT advise starting a business together. Ryan is the least argumentative person I know so we maybe argue twice a year (sometimes this is irritating haha).

Q. We have to say congrats to you and Ryan on your engagement! When can we expect the big day to happen?

A. I’ve already been to 6 weddings this summer

and it’s been bonkers. We aren’t in a rush and we really want to enjoy the planning process. We were going to do a television show following our lifestyle including fitness/wedding/family, but we decided against it. We’ve set a provisional date, but it’s a secret. We went back and forth between the idea of a festival wedding in the countryside, a black-tie winter wedding in London and doing something abroad. We have finally made our mind up.

Q. What is your dream wedding? A. Ibiza on a private beach with a raging pool

party and a BBQ at our villa the following day. Think of a traditional white wedding with balls of roses and white tablecloths. Ours will be the opposite.

Q. What is your secret to having a great body?

Q. Talk us through some of the best places to eat in Chelsea

A. A combination of different exercises. I follow the programmes

we’ve made at home, usually do the V2 workout when I’m in the gym A. Oooooooo I love food! and do some reformer Pilates to unwind/stretch and tone. I eat what My favourite Japanese is Koji (our dogs namesake) in Fulham - be I want to eat, but my portion control is very good. I try not to eat when warned though as it’s expensive. I’m not hungry and I tend to only eat things with some nutritional benefit. I don’t think it’s rocket My favourite pubs are: The Chelsea Pensioner science. We offer people macro consultations and The Harwood Arms. I live in gym kit so that they can see where they might be going The Brown Cow, Brook House and Sands End are and rarely wear wrong and some of the transformations we have all fab for roast dinners on the weekend (they’re seen have been incredible. In the beginning I jeans because all under the same ownership.) began to understand calorie surplus and deficit I’m all about and became more conscious with counting to La Famiglia for Italian food. ensure that I had the right amount of protein etc. comfort. Sukho for amazing Thai food but now I just eyeball my food because I know my body so well. Granger and Co on Pavilion Road is great for breakfast/brunch. Q. What is it like working with Ryan, what advice can you give Sticks and Sushi. other couples planning on starting a business together?

A. We are lucky because we are very different. I’m very bossy, he www.theweekendpages.com

to do 20 minutes of exercise or activity a day, “ It’s better than 1 huge session every week or fortnight.” my brother lives next door and my mother lives two streets away, so he is always around people being nurtured and trained. He’s probably the most spoilt dog in the world. Rewind two years and I wouldn’t have been able to handle having to look after someone else - you have to wait for the right time and place in life. I think when you feel like you are really settled and almost a bit bored, then it’s time to spice things up with a little furry friend. At least with a baby (when they’re young) you can keep them in once place, and then as they grow they learn to communicate with you. Let’s put it this way: I feel fully prepared for a bambino now having cleared up countless wees and poos.

Q. Rabbit on Kings Road. Kurobuta for Asian sharing food. Poule Au Pot for yummy rustic food. Chicama for Peruvian food, which was started by my friend.

Q. Out of all the places you have travelled which 2 places have been your favourite?

A.

My favourite trip of all time was visiting New York with Ryan last summer. I have been quite a few times, but Ryan hadn’t been to the US before, so I created the ultimate itinerary. We’re both huge foodies so our holidays are based around restaurants that I want to visit. I probably spend more money on food than anything else in the whole wide world. My second favourite place is also somewhere that I could revisit a million times and never get bored. Paris! We just had the most amazing work trip and stayed at this fabulous hotel.

Q.

What is your secret to having such amazing healthy-looking skin?

A. I’ve started oil cleansing in the evening. I always cleanse morning

and night but in the rare instance that I can’t be bothered at night then I use RMS face wipes which are amazing because they are oil based. I wake up with skin like a baby’s bottom. My current favourite facial is Murad at Harrods. I always leave feeling like a different person. I’m usually quite stressed and living at a fast pace, but something about that hour-long session changes my outlook.

Q.

Let’s talk a bit about your most adorable little Koji, would you say it’s like having a child, feeding, bathing playing?

A.

Having Koji is an enormous responsibility. A dog is certainly for life, not for Christmas and I would urge anybody to really, really think properly about it before getting one. We are madly in love with him, but we are very lucky because we get to work from home,

www.theweekendpages.com

What tips can you give to pet owners when bathing pets, do you have any tricks to make it easier?

A. Never soak their faces because they feel like they’re drowning. I

run a bath about 3 inches deep with lukewarm water and put Koji in, then I will lather him in special organic, dog friendly shampoo and then rinse him with the shower head. Koji hates the hair dryer and will avoid it at all costs which I’m worried is a consequence of not giving him his first bath until he was about 4 months old. For a video of Koji in the bath please refer to my IGTV LOL.

Q.

Finally, anything exciting for 2019/2020 that we don’t know about?

A. We have an app launching in September which is going to offer

so much more than what we are currently able to. I get so many requests from people looking for a full comprehensive service so we’re finally making it available. There are going to be a lot of recipes and some mental health aspects too. We are also throwing our first event for all our members in London which I’m pumped about. I’ve had the opportunity to meet a few people on a one to one basis at home, but I’m eager to speak to people’s experiences face to face. We are also employing our third employee, so things are scaling up pretty fast. We’re planning on taking our team to the US for a month or so to work remotely. Ryan and I will get married ;-) I’m also launching my Youtube Channel which will feature a bunch of my makeup and beauty routines as well as fitness videos, food, you know the drill.

WIN!

Treat your pet to the whole Pethroom Range. Go to www.theweekendpages.com/win to enter!

How often do give your four-legged friend a bath in a month? Most dogs and cats would rather skip bath time or are afraid of it, but bathing performs a significant role in the health of your pet’s coat and skin, helping to keep your pet clean from dirt and shampoo residue. We would like to introduce a premium pet showerhead, Relax Shower – an ideal showerhead for washing & brushing 2 in 1 at the same time. Let’s take a look! Dogs and cats have sensitive hearing and can hear four times farther away than humans can. They get stressed with the noise created from a regular showerhead and which is why your pets can be anxious to take a bath. We therefore tried to figure out a way to help our friends get over their fear of water. It took four years to develop Relax Shower. We've got 7 worldwide patent certificates from the USA, EU, Japan, Korea and China. The product has been tested 3,000 times in the manufacturing process. Washing and Brushing at the same time Relax Shower offers a protrusion that massages the pet as they are washed. It removes dead hair and all shampoo residue when showering, so it prevents water from splashing into the pet’s eyes and ears. Less Noise & Low water pressure Dogs and cats have sensitive hearing and can hear things that human can’t. The silicon head cap minimises the noise and pressure which helps to relieve noise anxiety. No Water Splashing The round yellow silicon head cap is designed to prevent water from splashing into the pet’s eyes and ears. It conserves water as the round cap can be fitted back and forth to prevent water splashing all over. Skin Massaging Uniquely designed silicon protrusion gently massages the skin of the pet. It helps to exfoliate the old dead skin properly. No Flipping Head Simply push the lever for water to flow, perfect for keeping control - no need to keep turning your taps on & off mid washing. Bobbi Brown

Rimmel

Whether you prefer to go mostly makeup free and just want to conceal dark circles or you’ve got a stubborn mark to hide, this concealer can tackle it all. The name may sound full-on, but the formula is almost weightless on the skin and blends seamlessly despite being highly pigmented to specifically tackle the effects of one too many late nights.

If you have a love-hate relationship with eyeliner and think that they can almost sense fear then stop panicking as Rimmel is here to help. This super-saver eyeliner is under £5 and despite the purse-friendly price is waterproof, smudgeproof and flake-proof with an easy to use applicator that will turn your eyeliner nightmares into dreams.

Instant Full Coverage Concealer

If you want a concealer that really goes the extra mile then this Bobbi Brown staple is also a great choice as it’s sweat, humidity and water resistant. For perfect application prep your under eye with an eye cream to plump out any creases and create a hydrated canvas and then apply short strokes of product under the eye before gently patting it in with your index finger for best results.

Exaggerate Liquid Eyeliner

There’s a few different ways to apply a liquid eyeliner and finding the right way for you can just take some experimentation. Try drawing the wings on first and this can often be the trickiest part and when you’ve got them how you want them draw back across your lash line. You can also try drawing three shorter lines across your lash line starting with the thinnest line near the inner corner or your eye and the thickest near the outer corner. Draw the wings on and then go back and connect £3.99 the line with even smaller strokes for a perfectly even finish.

Nars

Sheer Glow Foundation Nars products were created with ease in mind and an idea of being able to quickly apply something with your fingers and still get beautiful coverage. Their Sheer Glow Foundation comes in a huge 40 shades so you’ll be sure to find the right one for your skin tone, and a small amount goes a very long way thanks to its sheer and silky consistency. To apply the foundation, place a small drop on the back of your hand and run a finger over it in circles to warm up the product before gliding over the face, starting in the areas that need the most coverage. You can sweep it across your forehead or jaw in broad strokes and pat it into trickier places like under the eyes and around the nose.

Micro Brow Pencil Brows are big business and having well-shaped brows with volume and definition can make a big difference in framing your face. Skinny and unruly brows are a thing of the past and NYX and its affordable beauty products are here to save the day again with their Micro Brow Pencil. Equipped with a micro-fine pencil at one end and a brush at the other, this duo will help you get model eyebrows in no time. First comb through your brows to define the shape, paying particular attention to the arch of the eyebrow. In short stroke starting almost at the inner corner of the eyebrow but leaving a few of the starting hairs natural, fill in any gaps or uneven sections and follow the shape of the brow, drawing upwards strokes near the arch and longer downward strokes to elongate the tail of the brow. For a natural finish you can use the brush to gently groom the brows again and comb the product through for a subtle and fluffy finish.

Charlotte Tilbury

Full Fat Lashes Mascara Your days of searching for a clump-free mascara that manages to give you curl, volume, length and definition are over as Charlotte Tilbury has it perfected. Her Full Fat Lashes Mascara has fine-tipped bristles that capture every single lash for a beautifully full lash line while a 5 grooved brush makes sure that the right amount of product coats your lashes while pulling them up and out for a wide-eyed Bambi effect without the usual clumps. For best results curl your lashes first then start at the inner corner of the eye, making sure to wiggle the wand in a zig-zag motion as you pull the mascara brush through your lashes. At the outer corner brush lashes up and away at a diagonal slant to really achieve the doe look and use the tip of the brush to gently coat lower lashes.

GLOW INTO AUTUMN

SEPTEMBER TIPS TO SEASON-PROOF YOUR SKIN By Sally Underwood

E

verywhere you look sun cream and sarongs are left abandoned in bargain bins, schools gates are reopening for a new year, and some enthusiastic department stores have even launched their Christmas stock.

however.

It can only mean one thing…the transition to Autumn has officially begun.

For stressed or hormonal skin, the constant battle of chilly winds versus drying central heating can leave faces red and sensitive. While for those prone to acne, fluctuations in oil production combined with lower outdoor humidity can cause sudden breakouts for the first time in months.

And while the season ahead heralds comfortable months spent boxset bingewatching, and the blissful move from swimwear to the infinitely more forgiving loungewear, the change of seasons can also signal the reappearance of a host of cold weather ailments. Changing clocks, central heating and the post-holiday surge of more bodies on public transport can all take their toll on our immune system, mood and skin. But while many of us have long since perfected the arts of tactfully sidestepping the hugs of runny-nosed acquaintances and the double-elbowed door opening, even the most Autumn-savvy among us may struggle to keep our skin glowing and healthy through this period.

For skin that was already dry or dehydrated this may manifest itself in flaking, dullness, discomfort, or even cracking, while for those prone to eczema or psoriasis this season can signal the start of a flare-up.

Apart from feeling uncomfortable, skin that is overly-dry or breaking out can also leave us susceptible to infection. So, just as we stockpile Echinacea and hand sanitizer to ward against coughs and colds, what can we do to season-proof our skin and keep it glowing and healthy this Autumn? General consensus says the first and easiest way to prevent dryness or dehydration is to keep skin’s moisture barrier in tact in the first place. This means no harsh detergent cleansers or overly-zealous exfoliants.

Aside from being our body’s largest organ with an important role in preventing infection, our skin is also one of the first parts of our body to show the effects of seasonal changes.

Instead, try keeping to milk, balm or oil cleansers for dry, normal or hormonal skin types. For acne prone skin, or those who dislike the feel of oil-based products, consider a gentle gel formula instead to remove dirt and makeup without drying skin.

Both on our faces and our bodies, the skin’s moisture barrier- its outermost layer- uses healthy oils to keep much-needed hydration from escaping, while preventing bad bacteria from getting in. Autumn’s rollercoaster of temperatures and weather conditions can leave this barrier compromised and sensitive,

Since skin works hardest to regenerate itself overnight, during Autumn it is also worth adding a targeted night treatment to your routine to tackle specific concerns. For those who would rather not replace an existing routine, a facial oil layered over moisturiser or night cream can also target issues including

loss of firmness, hyperpigmentation or skin dullness without the need for multiple new products. For those prone to eczema or excessively dry skin already concerned about flare-ups over the coming months, try to get in front of any potential issues while skin is still relatively hydrated from summer. This could include switching to a gentler body and face wash, using emollients straight after showering, and using a humidifier to maintain skin hydration levels in the home. And finally, for the true skincare aficionados already well-versed in the Autumn product switch-up, you might consider keeping an eye out for what looks set to be one of next year’s biggest skincare trends; the microbiome. Made up of more than 1,000 different types of bacteria, this system of skin flora and fauna is increasingly thought to have an impact on everything from the rate at which we age to acne and rosacea. In much the same way that many of try to support gut health with probiotic supplements or live yogurts, it seems protecting the balance of good and bad bacteria on our skin could soon be an integral part of our routine. Luckily, before we all begin rolling around in fermented dairy products, beauty brands are already a step ahead and incorporating live cultures into their products, including ESPA, La Roche Posay, Pacifica and Allies of Skin. Whatever your plans this autumn, however, just remember to keep up the SPF (even when it is cloudy and grey), since free radical damage from the sun can exacerbate everything from dryness and pigmentation to acne and premature ageing.

VITAMIN C

Another easy add-on to an existing routine is vitamin C. A powerful antioxidant possibly best-known for its skin-brightening benefits, vitamin C can tackle myriad skin issues, including helping ward off winter sallowness for those hoping to hang onto their holiday glow a little longer. This ingredient is also proven to help tackle uneven skin tone, which may help those suffering from acne scars, or post-summer hyperpigmentation. Not all vitamin C products are created equal, however. Notoriously unstable, vitamin C is proven to be most effective in its pure ascorbic acid form and should come housed in a coloured or opaque packaging to prevent it breaking down in UV light.
