Death crash soldier was over limit Sneha Mejari Four people were killed by a drunken solider driving a military van on Mysore Road. e accident happened in the aernoon of September 9. According to Manjunath Babu, Police Inspector, Kengeri Police station, “Military stallion number 01d134782x on its way to Bangalore from Mysore, went over the median, colliding with two bikes and a tempo. A couple and two boys died on the spot.” According to Sayed Babar, an eyewitness, “e tempo was parked by the side of the road. Its driver had gone to have tea. e military van dashed into it from across the highway, clashing with two bikes before it finally crashed into the tempo. e driver was found drunk by the people who ran to help.” Raju Prasad, a friend of the dead boys Anjan Gowda and Prakash Gowda, said, “Both of them had recently got a job in Mysore Electronic LTD. ey were going to visit the Ganpati Temple near Kengeri when this fatal accident happened.” He added that aer the accident, police was trying to protect the
military van driver and did nothing to protect the victims. Manju Prakash and his wife Mahadevi were on the other bike that was hit by the military van. “We had all gone to visit a temple. ey had asked me to bring their children, Sindhu and Shakti Ganesh, back in a bus. I did not know that they would never return,” said Rupa, a relative of the dead couple. Dr. Raghunath, Casualty Medical Officer at Rajarajeshwari
Hospital, said, “e four people were dead when they were brought here.” A military spokesman stated brake failure as the cause of accident. He denied the allegation of the driver being drunk. e Police Inspector further added: “Joytiba Maruti Belgaokar, 31, the soldier, was proven drunk by medical reports. Over 30 times as many females as males were abducted in the first six months of this year, according to Bangalore Police. Until July this year, just nine males under the age of 21 were abducted in the city. e figure for females abducted was 288. According to the findings of State Crime Records Bureau, the number of cases of children under 16 years of age kidnapped in Karnataka has risen from 109 in 2011 to 471 in 2012 - a 77 per cent increase. Bangalore stands first in the state for its crime rate. It contributed 62.76% in the total crime committed against children in Karnataka in 2012, revealed the report. “When we talk of children being taken away by force, we talk of those falling in the age group of 0 to 16.
Children are kidnapped for ransom, begging, slavery and trafficking. Of all these, the largest number, 40.7 per cent of the total children kidnapped in 2013, were girls taken away to flesh trade,” said Hemant Nimbalkar, Joint Commissioner of Police, Crime branch, Bangalore. According to a report from the Commissioner of Police Office, 59 cases have been reported of children under 16 being abducted in Bangalore in the first eight months of 2013. 19 children have been kidnapped in August and 10 in July. “It is usually the children from middle and lower strata of the society that are most prone to being kidnapped. e offenders know that they would not get anywhere by touching the children of the rich and powerful,” said Mr. Nimbalkar.
“I have been working for child welfare for 11 years now but I have never seen a case where a child who had been kidnapped was found and helped by the society to settle to normalcy. “Rescuing a child is way easier than helping his/her rehabilitation,” said Vasudeva Sharma, Executive Director of Child Rights Trust, which is an advocacy, research, capacity building and lobbying organization. e group campaigns on child rights issues at all levels of state and national government. Mr Sharma added: “ese children are found usually around bus stops and railway stations. “ese children might be rescued from the kidnapping but they are not properly rehabilitated. It is difficult for them as society does not view these kids in a good light.”

HEALTH
Vaishnavi J Desai Bangalore has one of the highest incidences of prostate cancer cases among the metropolitan cities. Dr. Raghunath.S.K., Senior Consultant Uro Oncologist at Health Care Global said: “Six years ago, I attended 15 prostate cancer cases a year, but now it’s nine per day”. According to the National Cancer Registry Programme (NCRP), cancer of prostate is now the third most common cancer in Bangalore. NCRP’s Age-Adjusted Rate
(AAR) statistics state that Bangalore recorded, 8.9 (per 1, 00,000 male population). Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, Pune all have relatively lower rates of 7.0, 7.81, 6.9 and 7.2 respectively. Dr. Raghunath added that the major cause for the rise is the change in lifestyle. e increase in stress levels of people in Bangalore too is a major contributor. Various dietary changes and environmental variations are causes for this rise. Dr. K.S.Gopinath, Senior Surgical Oncologist said: “e number of cases that are coming to the forefront are increasing. It indicates that the awareness about prostate cancer is spreading and many people have registered with the NCRP.” Bangalore has a
prominent population of educated classes and this is the reason for many cases to be registered and the numbers to increase. Foundations like Global Prostate Disease Foundation help people with the prostate cancer and spread awareness about it,he added. Dr Srivatsa.H, Oncologist, HCG said: “e medical fraternity lacks awareness about prostate cancer as they are treating patients who are in the fourth stage of cancer.” ere aren’t many doctors in South India who can treat prostate cancer. Nerve Sparing Radical Prostectomy is a new technology of treating prostate cancer which can be implemented by doctors who treat 10
to 15 cases a year. According to doctors at HCG, High Intensity Focus Ultrasound erapy, an advanced technology to treat prostate cancer, reduces the undercuts of surgery.
