Safe campus, unsafe surroundings Sneha Bengani Almost a year aer the gang rape of a student, the area around a major law school remains unsafe for its students. e undergraduate student of National Law School of India University was raped on Bangalore University's Jnanabharathi campus on October 13 last year. According to V.S. Elizabeth, Professor of History, Gender and Law in NLSIU, “e police do not give much importance to such incidents. Students have started dealing with their problems by themselves. ey do not report the everyday incidents anymore. We only get to know if something serious has happened.” Shrishti Singh, a fourth-year student of NLSIU said, “e only in-campus problem that we have is poor mobile network connectivity. We cannot even make a distress call at the time of emergency. Most of us use Vodafone as was suggested by our seniors. But its
network works only at certain points in the campus and is not there in the hostel at all.” e students have asked Vodafone to solve the problem, called their customer care repeatedly but it has not done anything so far. According to the students, despite some improvements, the area around the college is not safe. Girls get teased and groped by the people outside the college and avoid going out. “e auto drivers charge exorbitant amounts of money for short distances forcing us to walk which is never a good experience. We avoid going out of college as much as we can,” Shrishti added. “ere is an eatery just a stone’s throw away from the campus. e people who come there pester girls from our college. at has happened in front of me, to girls who have accompanied me. One of our students got stabbed near that place,” said Sukhmani Singh, a third-year student of the law
“One of our boys got killed a few years ago. He was out for some work and his car broke down. Some men come and stabbed him to death. ere were others in the car who they locked.

Rajat Gangwar, a fih year student and the President of NLSIU, said, “I was coming back from a restaurant close to college with three of my friends in an auto one night. Two drunk men stopped the auto to light their cigarettes. When they saw a girl with us, they started passing snide com-
ments which resulted in a row. We had to rush the driver to take us away in order to avoid any serious consequences.” According to Sukhmani Singh, “e police stationed outside the gate that connects BU with our college have been seen sleeping on duty. Anybody can go in and come out. ere have been times when they were not there even between 9 pm to 12 am.” But Rajat Gangwar differs. “You cannot enter that gate aer 9:30 pm if you are not a student. e officers are vigilant. Recently CCTV cameras have been installed near the gate.” “Every time we have an issue, the police accuse us of giving too much freedom to our students. ey want us to never let any student step out of the college. ere need to be some amount of restrictions obviously, but one must not forget that we are dealing with adults,” said Professor Elizabeth.
“A fellow sang an obscene song to a student on M.G. Road. She took the matter to the police. When confronted, the guy turned out to be an IT chap, 30 years old, married. en his wife comes and
falls at the student’s feet and pleads her not to file a complaint.” - V. S. Elizabeth, Professor of History, Gender and Law at NLSIU
