Most dads and grandpas take the young’uns to Penny Lake, a small lake stocked with hatchery trout out Warm Springs Road. The pond is located on the left side of Warm Springs Road about four miles from downtown Ketchum. Another favorite site for youngsters is the lake tucked away in the hills past the end of Lake Creek Drive just north of Ketchum. This, too, is hatcherystocked. They might even drive up in their truck to dump them while you’re dangling your line. Several local fly-fishing outfitters teach kids spin fishing and flyfishing. Among them: Silver Creek Outfitters (www.silver-creek. com, 622-5282 or 726-5282); Lost River Outfitters (www. lostriveroutfitters.com, 726-1706 and Sturtevants Mountain Outfitters (www.sturtos.com., 726-4501) 101 Amazing Things To Do / Summer 2011

The Sun Valley area has some great granite. Sawtooth Mountain Guides can take you there, using ice axes and crampons to clamber up snow and ice on the Sawtooth Mountains’ classic couloirs to rock climbing such iconic peaks as Devils Bedstead and Mustang Peak on Trail Creek Summit or Finger of Fate, Warbonnet Peak, Mount Heyburn and Grand Mogul near Redfish Lake. (www.sawtoothguides.com) The folks at Elephant’s Perch in Ketchum are always available to “talk rock”, as are those at Lost River Sports in Hailey.

Sun Valley’s long summer days and bounty of mountain lakes is a backpacker’s dream. A good first backpack trip for kids is Hell Roaring Lake 47 miles north of Ketchum. The trail in is only 3.5 miles and relatively flat if you drive the rough jeep road to 3.5 miles to the parking area. But load up on the DEET! Other popular backpack treks include the Toxaway Lake Loop in from Yellow Belly or Pettit Lakes. And the beauti beautiful Cramer Lakes, which can be accessed from Redfish Lake. Sawtooth Mountain Guides offers extended off-trail trekking trips through the Sawtooths, spicing them up with fishing and rock climbing options. Outfitters also offer afternoon ecology hikes. It’s easy to go hiking right leaving from your front door, whether up Carbonate Ridge in Hailey or on the Proctor Loop outside Sun Valley’s back door. Perhaps the quintessential Sun Valley hike is the one to Pioneer Cabin from Corral Creek. It’s about 7.5 miles round trip and does involve a 2,400-foot elevation gain. But the reward is immense: An old skier’s lodge built by Sun Valley in 1937 to give guests a European-style ski experience. And a cirque of craggy mountains that appear to be right in your face. To get there, drive east on the Sun Valley/Trail Creek Road, turning right onto Corral Creek. Follow this to the trailhead. Want a guide? Sun Valley Trekking Company offers guided day hikes, including one to the top of 12,009-foot Hyndman Peak out East Fork Road. (www.svtrek.com, 788-1966).

Sun Valley is a biking mecca for skinny tires and fat tires, alike. The ride of choice for many is the 32-mile paved trail from Bellevue to Hulen Meadows north of Ketchum with occasional interpretive signs. Want a greater challenge? Ride the hilly bike path around Elkhorn. Or, point your two wheels north along Highway 75 to Galena Summit. Sturtevants Mountain Outfitters offers Monday night road bike rides leaving from the Hailey store at 6. (788-7847). Sun Summit North offers rides leaving at 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays from its Ketchum shop. And Nappy Neaman leads road rides at 6:15 p.m. Wednesdays from The Elephant’s Perch in Ketchum (726-3497). Join other bicyclists--and dogs, too--in the Ride the Rails on Saturday, July 30. The Blaine County Recreation District will set up refreshments stands along the way. The Hailey 4th of July Criterium will be held July 4 in downtown Hailey. And the 2011 BCRD Sawtooth Century ride from Ketchum to Alturas Lake and back takes place Aug. 13 with a 50-mile component, as well. Information: www.bcrd.org

Mongolians have long lived not in ranchstyle homes or even thatched huts. Instead, they’ve lived in teepee-like dwellings with lattice walls, radial rafters and framed doors. Those who would like to try one out can avail themselves of a yurt tucked in the woods near Galena Lodge 24 miles north of Ketchum. The yurt sleeps up to eight and is furnished with a wood stove, propane stove for cooking, lanterns, pots and pans, books and games and beds with foam mats. All you need to bring is a sleeping bag and pillow, clothes and food. (www.galenalodge.com or 726-4010). Sun Valley Trekking’s Coyote Yurt sits amidst a stand of spruce and fir at 8,700 feet with views of the Boulder and Pioneer Mountains. You can hike, mountain bike or drive to the yurt from Baker Creek Road with only your sleeping bag and food in tow. (www.svtrek.com, 7881966). The Smiley Creek Lodge, which sits on the other side of Galena Summit 37 miles north of Sun Valley offers teepees. The rustic Galena Lodge 24 miles north of Ketchum makes a delightful day or evening outing. Check out the wildflowers along Gladiator Creek. Climb aboard a horse for a trip to old mining sites. Mountain bike along Rip n’ Tear—part of the 25-mile trail system that laces the hills around the lodge. Top a wagon ride off with a barbecue dinner on the deck outside the lodge on Thursday evenings. The lodge reopens for the summer on June 11 with an outdoor shop open from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. It’ll offer its summer adventure camps for kids from June 13 through Aug. 19. Galena offers lunches from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., plus a weekend brunch menu on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. It serves up barbecues on Thursdays. It started out as a cross-country ski trail groomed once a year for skiers who wanted to test their moxie in the elite Boulder Mountain Tour race. Today the Harriman Trail is an all-season trail as prized by pedal pushers as skinny ski scooters. The 19.6-mile trail, which parallels Highway 75 and the Big Wood River, begins seven miles north of Ketchum at the Sawtooth National Recreation Area headquarters and gently climbs 1,100 feet to Galena Lodge. The gravel/dirt trail courses through meadows, aspen stands, wetlands, lodgepole forests and past rust-colored rocky outcroppings, providing a window onto Easley, Silver and Boulder peaks. Faux stone benches and interpretive signs are spaced along the path. And there’s a goat viewing scope tucked away on a hill 1. 5 miles north of Prairie Creek. The gravel makes it more suitable for mountain bikes than skinny tires. And, though it loses elevation between Galena Lodge and SNRA, count on some hills.

Sun Valley boasts a sophisticated art scene—no velvet Elvis here. Count on seeing masters like Picasso at Frederic Boloix Fine Art, contemporary works at Gilman Contemporary and western art dating to famed photographer Edward Curtis at Broschofsky Gallery. Gallery DeNovo offers up-and-coming artists from Europe, Kneeland Gallery serves up colorful landscapes and Gail Severn offers an eclectic mix, including Tony Foster’s watercolor journals of trips up Everest. The Sun Valley Center for the Arts hosts exhibitions on fascinating topics like “Extinction,” while the Hinks/Tonieri Gallery fascinates with its ceiling ducks. And Ketchum’s newest gallery, The First Avenue Contemporary Art Gallery, offers works focusing on the figure and more. Make an evening of it on a Gallery Walk where the galleries serve up wine, sparkling water and artists to chat with. This summer’s Gallery Walks will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. May 28, July 1, Aug. 5 and Sept. 2. Information: www.svgalleries.org, or 726-5512.

Ask couples of any age what makes for a cool summer date and they invariably point to a hike or bike ride in Adam’s Gulch. And with summer twilight procrastinating until 10, it’s easy to do. Cap it off with a trip to one of the valley’s many fine restaurant’s they say. Zou 75, Fresshies, diVine or CK’s in Hailey are faves among the young set here. If the eyes are still wide-open, head to Whiskey Jacques in Ketchum to rock out with a variety of regional tour bands beginning at 10 p.m.

It’s so easy to picnic in Sun Valley, what with no rain and no bugs in the forecast. Grab a wrap or panini at Atkinsons’ or Roxy’s. Pick up some tamales at Rasberry’s Deli at 315 S. Main St., Hailey, a burrito at KB’s 121 N. Main St., Hailey. Or grab a couple turkey and cranberry sauce wraps at Wrapcity, 180 S. Or mix and match a variety of cheeses, olives and cookies from Cristina’s tantalizing deli case at (520 2nd St. E. Ketchum) or that of CIRO Market (230 Walnut Ave., Ketchum). Need a meditative moment? You may find it at the Garden of Infinite Compassion at the Sawtooth Botanical Garden located a few miles south of Ketchum at Highway 75 and Gimlet Road. The small but beautiful garden with its towering stones and gurgling creek was created over a fourweek span to commemorate the 2005 visit of the Dalai Lama to the Wood River Valley. The Dalai Lama gave the community a 400pound, hand-carved Prayer Wheel crafted by Buddhist monks in Dharamsala, India, as part of a larger message of healing in the wake of 9-11. And he blessed it, making it one of only two prayer wheels in North America he’s blessed personally.

The barbecue, from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 26, at John and Diane Peavey’s ranch, will benefit the 15th annual Festival. The Peaveys will provide a lamb barbecue with salads, sides and desserts. Last year 80 sleuths formed teams ranging from two to 10 as they chased 10 clues around town, concluding it with a hot dog lunch. Old-timers boast that salmon was once so plentiful that you could cross a creek on their backs. And Redfish Lake got its name from the kokanee salmon. The salmon aren’t nearly as plentiful now, thanks to dams and other obstacles that make it tougher for them to make the 900-mile trek to the ocean and then back again. But you can still watch some spawn in the Salmon River as it courses past Buckhorn picnic ground and below Sunbeam Dam in late August. Buckhorn is located a couple miles south of Redfish Lake on Highway 75; Sunbeam is 13 miles east of Stanley on U.S. 93. Learn more about the salmon and other area fish at the Sawtooth Fish Hatchery (774-3684), five miles south of Stanley on Highway 75, and the Visitor Center at Redfish Lake. And don’t miss the Sawtooth Salmon Festival Aug. 20 and 21, which includes Chinook and sockeye tours, a salmon feast and live music (www.sawtoothsalmonfestival.com).

Perhaps the quintessential eating experience in Sun Valley is Sunday Brunch from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lodge Dining Room. Listen to pianist Leana Leach rap out some melodies on the ivories while you treat yourself at the omelet and crepe stations (don’t forget that ice cream flambé!) Keep an eye out for Sunday Brunch at 310 Main in Hailey as well. Of course, we can’t eat only on Sunday and, fortunately, the valley has plenty of other to-die-for dining experiences from the incredible menu at ZOU 75, casual dining at CK’s, lighter fare at diVine to seafood tacos at Lago Azul Mexican Restaurant all in Hailey. The biggest question in this valley: Where to begin? We always encourage you to drink responsibly; however there’s always the option to hitch a ride on Mountain Rides buses, or catch a cab. 101 Amazing Things To Do / Summer 2011

The free Sunday showcase, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the outdoor rink, is a sight to behold with toddlers dressed up in raincoats dancing to “Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head.” And this year’s showcase will feature interpretative improvs. Information: www.sunvalleyfsc.com

The valley’s two bicycle pump parks offer the latest to-do among bicyclists looking for ways to challenge themselves. These parks call on bikers to use their bodies to navigate the dirt-covered rollercoaster bumps, berms and banked turns, rather than pedal around them. The Blaine County Recreation District’s 11,800-squarefoot course next to the Blaine County Aquatic Center at 1020 Fox Acres Road in Hailey features tight, technical turns. The City of Ketchum’s quarter-acre pump park at Seventh Street and Second Avenue across from Hemingway Elementary School is more aired out, permitting more speed.

One Oregon-bound pioneer who crossed the inhospitable landscape 24 miles northeast of Carey disdainfully described it as “the Devil’s vomit.” But modern-day visitors find the Craters of the Moon National Monument, which is the size of Rhode Island, a fascinating array of spatter cones, lava tubes, crusted rubble, cinder cones and blue-sheen, ropy-coiled pahoehoe. Acquaint yourself with what’s there via displays and film in the visitor’s center. Then, drive a seven-mile loop around the park. Follow a ranger into a cave. Climb to the top of the 6,181-foot Inferno Cone. Or walk the nature trail through Devils Orchard. Information: 208-527-1300 or www.nps.gov/crmoindex/htm

Why is Colon Hydrotherapy so effective? Colon Hydrotherapy cleanses the colon:
Toxic materials are broken down and removed so they can no longer harm your body or inhibit assimilation and elimination. Even debris built up over a long period is gently but surely removed in the process of a series of irrigations. Once impacted material is removed, your colon can begin again to function as it was meant to. Colon Hydrotherapy is a whole body rejuvenation treatment and improves your immune system. The colon has been referred to as the sewer system of the body.

Drink in the color as the hills around Sun Valley dress up in shades of blue and purple, yellow and red. The cornucopia of wildflowers begins blossoming in early summer on the backside of Dollar Mountain and continues up until the time the leaves begin falling at high mountain lakes in the Sawtooth Mountains. Get to know your flowers up close and personal by taking a guided hike. The Sawtooth Botanical Garden offers wildflower walks from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. each Thursday from May 26 through July 28. Information: 208-726-9358 or www.sbgarden.org
Colon Hydrotherapy exercises the Colon Muscles:
The build up of toxic debris weakens the colon muscles and impairs it’s functioning. The gentle filling and emptying of the colon improves the peristaltic activity (muscular contraction) by which the colon naturally moves material. This will help speed up the transit time of fecal material once the colon muscles have been toned, strengthened, and rejuvenated.
Colon Hydrotherapy reshapes the Colon:
When conditions exist in the colon, they alter its shape and structure, which in turn cause more health problems. The gentle action of the water, coupled with the massage techniques and experience of the colon therapist, help eliminate pockets of waste and eventually narrowed, spastic constriction, finally enabling the colon to resume its natural state. Other manipulative and massage techniques can help to reshape the colon structure over time.
Colon Hydrotherapy hydrates the body:
Our bodies are made up of 65-75% water and with the use of pure water in the colonic; our bodies are able to absorb much needed clean and pure water to hydrate the cells of the body. Ernest Hemingway used to love to visit this oasis at the base of the Picabo Hills. So did Gary Cooper, Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball. Today the high-desert preserve and its unique, spring-fed creek plays host to 150 species of birds and the highest density of brown and rainbow trout of any wild trout stream in the United States. The Nature Conservancy is celebrating Silver Creek’s 35th anniversary this summer with several free activities, including a barbe barbecue to celebrate the opening day of trout season on May 28, an anniversary party on June 30 and several canoe floats and wildlife/wildflower hikes. Grab your GPS and get going on a high-tech treasure hunt along Trail Creek and through the hills where local geocaching affionados have hide caches of trinkets. Geocaching had its genesis in 2000 when the Clinton administration stopped degrading GPS signals, enabling Joe Q. Citizen to determine locations on the planet according to latitude and longitude coordinates relayed by satellites to global positioning devices. Two days after the signals were left unscrambled, someone hid a container of goodies outside Portland, announced the coordinates of its location on the Internet and a new sport was born. Today there are hundreds of thousands hidden throughout the world, including Sun Valley.
Hailey’s skate park across from the Hailey Post Office has generated scads of international attention in skateboarding videos, with visits by skateboard guru Tony Hawk and even the widely popular skateboarding movie, “Northwest.” Try ripping it up in the concrete half-pipes and swirling around the bowls for yourself. Want something just a tidbit tamer? Try Ketchum’s skate park at the corner of Warm Springs and Saddle roads.

Mountaintop experiences don’t come without a little sweat equity. But it’s worth every bit of the three-mile hike to Horton Peak Lookout as you see Alturas, Perkins, Pettit and Yellow Belly Lakes come into view followed by some breathtaking views of the colorful White Clouds. To get there, drive north from Ketchum on Highway 75 for 36 miles until you reach Pole Creek Road. Follow this to Valley Road. Follow it five miles to the sign pointing to Horton Peak Lookout. Want something closer? Can’t beat the lookout perched at 9,150 feet atop Bald Mountain.

We may not have a mall. But we certainly have a variety of shopping running from the elegant clothing at Sun Valley’s Brass Ranch and Comme Les Filles to everything you could possibly want to go trekking at stores like Sturtevants Mountain Outfitters and North & Co. In Ketchum find a unique one-of-a-kind gift at the Taylormade Pottery studio. Snuggle up in sheepskin at The Sheepskin Coat Factory. Check out the latest coffee roaster at Ketchum Kitchens. And when you’ve worked your way down to Hailey follow the Yellowbrick Road to a unique collection of 13 different boutiques, including a music, book, bed and bath, snowboard and shoe store, located within one store. Saturday morning join the mad dash in search for treasures at valley garage sales. Check out The SUN’S listings on Wednesdays to map out your attack. And pick up a kit, including signs, balloons, stickers and tip book from The SUN if you plan to do one yourself. And don’t forget the free Picabo Flea Market June 25 and 26 at the Picabo Airport. After all that shopping, treat yourself to a Spa Day at PURE or any of the other abundant spa locations throughout the Valley.

Oenophiles and wanna-be oenophiles will find plenty to drink to as the Sun Valley Center for the Arts rolls out its 30th Anniversary Wine Weekend. The wine auction, which helps subsidize the center’s programs and provide art scholarships for local youth, was named one of the Top 10 U.S. Charity Auctions for six years running by “Wine Spec-tator.” This year’s auction kicks off with vintner dinners in private homes on July 21. A Riedel Wine Symposium focusing on wines from the West Sonoma Coast and the Wine Auction Gala will be held July 22. Another Riedel Wine Symposium—this one focusing on wines from down under--will be held July 23, followed by a Wine Tasting Extravaganza and the Wine Auction Picnic and Concert. The picnic will feature flamenco artist Sam Lardner and Barcelona who wowed schoolkids earlier this year with songs to save the oceans. Information: www.sunvalleycenter.org or 726-9491.

You can usually find a good kite-flying thermal in the afternoon—particular on top of Old Baldy at 9,150 feet. Or, grab Dad and head up to Stanley for the Third Annual A.J. Silva Cup Kite Festival in Stanley’s Pioneer Park. The Father’s Day event will feature kite contests and prizes. Hamburgers, hot dogs and drinks will be provided and folks are welcome to contribute a potluck dish or two. You can always hoof it up Baldy, hiking the 5-mile Bald Mountain Trail from River Run Lodge to the top, taking time out to view Ketchum from the BLM’s historic overlook before catching a free chairlift ride back to the bottom. Or you can mountain bike it, perhaps choosing to circle around it via the Cold Springs and Warm Springs trails. The vast majority of people do it the easy way—they take the Gondola up halfway and board the Christmas lift the rest of the way. The gondola will crank up for the summer season on June 24. Tickets are available in the River Run Lodge. The historic Roundhouse Restaurant will serve up a barbecue lunch on the deck. The Lookout Restaurant will be open for restrooms and water. Shoshone Ice Caves used to be a great getaway for early settlers wanting to escape the heat or, just simply, wanting some ice cubes for their tea. Now it’s a novelty for motorists along Highway 75 who can’t pass up the green dinosaur with a cave man sitting on its neck and a three-story high Chief Wasakie. Shoshone Ice Caves is actually a thousand-foot lava tube with a ceiling measuring up to 30 feet in some places. Bring your coat: It’s a chilly 28 degrees inside! (The cave man can loan you his if you forgot yours.) Rockhounds will enjoy the rock treasures in the gift shop. The caves are 17 miles north of Shoshone on Highway 75. Hours are 8 a.m. to about 7 p.m. Fees start at $4. Information: 886-2058.

Idaho is said to have more geothermal treats than any other state in the Lower 48. And the Sun Valley area has its share. The most accessible around these parts is Easley Hot Springs, open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Swim in a full-size chlorine-free 85-degree swimming pool or relax in hot tubs while soaking in the beauty of the Boulder Mountains across the way. Hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays. A nearby store provides ice cream bars and suntan lotion. (www.cathedralpines. org or 726-7522). Warfield Hot Springs, or Frenchman’s Bend Hot Springs, sits in the middle of Warm Springs Creek 10.5 miles west of Highway 75. Russian John is a lukewarm roadside soak 18 miles north of Ketchum along Highway 75 near Milepost 146. A pile of logs shelters the old sheepherder’s pool. Elkhorn Hot Spring is two miles east of Lower Stanley on the river side of Highway 75; Basin Creek Hot Spring, seven miles east, and the more visible Sunbeam Hot Springs with its public bathhouse 11 miles east.

Ernest Hemingway, heralded as America’s greatest writer, came to Idaho in 1939 at the invitation of Sun Valley Resort, which hosted him in Suite 206 at the Sun Valley Lodge, which Hemingway christened “Glamour House.” Hemingway decorated the suite with slot machines and wrote “For Whom the Bell Tolls” there. He hunted ducks with actor Gary Cooper at Silver Creek and resided for a few months at the Ketchum Korral. Eventually, he bought a house overlooking the Big Wood River in Ketchum where he wrote “The Garden of Eden” and “A Moveable Feast” and held clay pigeon shooting parties. From there he took long walks in Eagle Creek and the North Fork area, while socializing at the Trail Creek Cabin, The Ram, Christiania and Casino. Catch more of Papa at his gravesite in the Ketchum Cemetery, the Hemingway Memorial along Trail Creek Road, the Community Library’s Regional History Department and the Ketchum/Sun Valley Ski and Heritage Museum. 101 Amazing Things To Do / Summer 2011

Birdwatching is simple enough to get involved in: all you need is a pair of binoculars, a guidebook and the ability to slow down and decipher what you’re seeing in the world around you. The wind-damaged cottonwoods along the Big Wood River, for instance, are literal smorgasbords for nutcrackers and woodpeckers which peck through the decaying bark to get at insects. As many as 150 species of birds, including eagles, hawks and trumpeter swan, have been identified in the Silver Creek Nature Preserve south of Bellevue. The Harriman Trail north of Ketchum sports such feathered creatures as red-shafted flickers. And Centennial Marsh near Fairfield is the largest marsh in the Pacific Northwest, making it a 10,000-acre hotel for shorebirds, waterfowl and raptors, including black-bellied plovers and loggerhead shrikes. For organized bird watching hikes, check with the Environmental Resource Center (726-4333) and Silver Creek Preserve (788-7910).

Ever seen young mountain goats run up and down their mothers’ back? It’s possible, considering the mountains surrounding Sun Valley are the farthest south mountain goats live naturally. These alpine sentinels are one of Idaho’s most elusive wild creatures—creatures living on the edge high in the steep rock cathedral spires that others can only dream of traversing. They can run straight up a steep rock wall, thanks to skid-proof footpads that act as suction cups. Their front toes are split to grip rock. Their razor-sharp hooves cut like ice axes into ice. The Blaine County Recreation District has installed goat scopes at Billy’s Bridge and the Harriman Trail just over a mile north of the Prairie Creek parking lot. Both are located about 17 miles north of Ketchum off Highway 75. Meanwhile, the ERC will hold Beaver Walks throughout the summer. Call 726-4333 for information 101 Amazing Things To Do / Summer 2011
