veryone says they came for the skiing. But they stayed for the summer. Summers have a magical quality in the Sun Valley area that you find very few places. Soft light from the sun peaking over the Pioneer Mountains casts interesting shadows in the mountain folds as mountain bikers and trail runners greet the cool morning air and the Valley’s dogs out for their morning walk check out the moose and elk scents left behind from the night before. The Valley hums with electricity as coffee baristas begin trotting out their special blends and merchants set out bargain racks of ski clothing for human squirrels wanting to stock up for next winter’s ski season. Soon, visitors are taking part in the grand dance, boarding the gondola to the top of Baldy, renting bicycles to ride along the Wood River bike path, stringing beads and throwing pots at businesses like Bella Cosa Studio and Boulder Mountain Clayworks, painting watercolors at the Sun Valley Center for the Arts and taking part in any number of illuminating discussions offered by The Community Library and entities like the Sun Valley Writers Conference. Come evening, after a tasty dinner at any number of fine eating establishments, it’s time to kick back and catch some vibes at Ketch’em Alive, the Symphony or the myriad of other concerts that keep the Valley humming as the alpenglow infuses the air. It’s hard to turn in, what with the Milky Way splashed across the dark night sky. But, heck, there’s plenty more living to do tomorrow. I’ve offered a sampling of the many things you can avail yourself of in a Sun Valley Summer. There’s so much more that we couldn’t fit into 101 Things to Do. But this should get you started. All we can say: Enjoy! ~ Karen Bossick, The Weekly Sun

backpacking bonanza
Sun Valley’s long summer days and bountiful mountain lakes make this place a backpacker’s paradise. A good first backpack trip for kids might be Fourth of July Lake, which is three miles in on a fairly flat trail. Stay there or head to the more scenic Washington Lake nearby. To get there, drive 45 miles north of Ketchum and turn onto the gravel Fourth of July Creek Road, following it 10 miles to the trailhead. Another short backpack trip is to Norton Lake. The path climbs but it’s only 2.5 miles to the first lake. If you want more after you’ve pitched camp, hike a short distance to a second lake or climb up to the 9,800-foot saddle to look into the Miner and Prairie lakes drainage. To get there, drive to Baker Creek Road 15 miles north of Ketchum and follow it for six miles, turning onto Norton Creek Road and following it to the end. Sawtooth Mountain Guides offers extended off-trail trekking trips through the Sawtooths, spicing them up with fishing and rock climbing options. Outfitters also offer afternoon ecology hikes. beaver walks with the erc
“Dancing with the Stars” combines with the flash of skater’s blades when nine local celebrities team up with Sun Valley’s ice skating stars for glory and cash prizes to be donated to the nonprofit of their choice. Last year’s “Battle of the Blades… Ice—It’s Hard” was a runaway success, packing in a turn-away crowd that came to cheer on their picks. This year’s competition will be held Sept. 8 at Sun Valley’s outdoor ice rink. Contestants will include snowboard champion Kaitlyn Farrington, alpine skier and Baldy Hill Climb champion Miles Fink-Debray, Ketchum firefighter Lara McLean, biking enthusiast Billy Olson, restaurateur Keith Perry, Nordic dynamo and rock climber Bob Rosso and Community School science teacher Hannes Thum. Information: battleoftheblades.org or Battle of the Blades Sun Valley on Facebook.
The Environmental Resource Center will offer an intimate look into the world of North America’s largest rodent from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday, June 28, and Thursday, Aug. 16. Meet at the ERC, 471 N. Washington St., in Ketchum to carpool to the Greenhorn Gulch trailhead. Free for ERC members. A suggested donation of $10 per person or $25 per family for non-members.

birdwatching - bird’s eye view
Sun Valley’s not just a magnet for tourists wanting a fun-loving getaway. Birds enjoy a little R&R here, as well. The wind-damaged cottonwoods along the Big Wood River are literal smorgasbords for nutcrackers and woodpeckers, which peck through the decaying bark to get at insects. Make tracks to the preserve just southwest of the River Run parking lot. As many as 150 species of birds, including eagles, hawks and trumpeter swan, have been identified in the Silver Creek Nature Preserve on Highway 20 south of Bellevue. The Harriman Trail north of Ketchum sports such feathered creatures as red-shafted flickers. And Centennial Marsh near Fairfield is the largest marsh in the Pacific Northwest, making it a 10,000-acre hotel for shorebirds, waterfowl and raptors, including black-bellied plovers and loggerhead shrikes.

camping - s’more time
Camping out isn’t just for the myriad of visitors who venture here to check out Sun Valley’s trademark sun. Locals like it, too, with some of them even camping out north of town all summer long. Boundary Creek Campground, a couple miles north of Sun Valley on Trail Creek Road, offers a night under the stars but is still close enough to town you can easily run back into town for the morning paper and cup-o-joe. If you don’t mind primitive camping, you can find it along Corral Creek Road or Trail Creek Road just north of the campground. The Wood River Campground, 10 miles north of Ketchum on Idaho 75, offers close proximity to town, along with a self-guided nature trail, fishing and float tubing in the Big Wood River and hiking and mountain biking on the adjacent Harriman Trail. 101 Amazing Things To Do / Summer 2012

caritas chorale - nez perce promises
Join the Caritas Chorale and orchestra as they present a newly commissioned cantata with libretto by Diane Josephy Peavey and music by David Alan Earnest. The cantata follows an earlier piece commemorating Lewis and Clark’s journey across Idaho. This one traces the bitter story of Idaho’s Nez Perce following their encounter with Lewis and Clark through Chief Joseph’s attempt to lead his people to freedom and their subsequent confinement on the reservation. The free concerts start at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 14, at The Community School in Sun Valley and Sunday, July 15, at the Wood River High School Performing Arts Theatre at the Community Campus in Hailey. The preceding week will feature performances by Nez Perce dancers, singers and storytellers at various locations. Information: CaritasChorale. org

carole king book signings
Singer-songwriter Carole King, who has made a home in Idaho since 1975, has written her autobiography, “Carole King: A Natural Woman.” The brutally honest memoir reveals how she entered onto the ground floor of rock and roll at age 15, writing such award-winning songs as “I Feel the Earth Move” and enduring four marriages with husbands who suffered from mental illness and drug abuse. And it tells how she became grounded amidst the mountains of Idaho, including her home on the Robinson Bar Ranch near Stanley that she purchased in 1981. King will signs copies of her new book from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Sunday, May 27, in the foyer outside the Limelight Room of the Sun Valley Inn as part of the Sun Valley Wellness Festival. She is also scheduled to sign books from 4 to 6 p.m. July 7 at Iconoclast Books in Ketchum.

company of fools - das barbecü
Teutonic opera meets “Dallas” when the award-winning Company of Fools presents “Das Barbecu” July 4-28 at The Liberty Theatre in Hailey. Jim Luigs and Scott Warrender’s Texas-sized musical condenses 14 hours of Wagner’s Ring Cycle, also known as “Gotterdammerung,” into a two-hour spoof of big Dolly Parton-like hair and even bigger cowboy hats in which five people play everyone. One-eyed Wotan is transformed from a god into a J.R. Ewing-style Texas mogul; Siegfried into a honky-tonk singer; and Brunnhilde into a spunky cowgirl in this new take on the Wagner opus, which features such odes as “Hog Tie Your Man.” Tickets: companyoffools.org or 208-578-9122. 101 Amazing Things To Do / Summer 2012

dining - alfresco
Summer offers that most splendid of opportunities—a chance to dine in the out of doors. One of the faves among locals is the outdoor patio at CKs Real Food in Hailey surrounded by the lovely flowers that Chris Kastner and his family cultivate as lovingly as they do their Vietnamese Bahn Mi, Guacho Steak and other gourmet meals. In Ketchum, Perry’s at 131 4th St. W. offers subterranean sidewalk seating for breakfast, lunch and, most recently, their dinners of Shrimp and Crab Enchiladas and Wild Alaskan Salmon.

fishing - by hook or by fly
Got fishing? Boy, do we ever! Sun Valley is home to some of the best fly-fishing in the world, says Sturtevants Mountain Outfitters fly-fishing guide Paddy McIlvoy, who came from Las Cruces, N.M., to fish for a week and never left. Not only do we have a river running through it (K-town, that is), there’s premiere steelhead and salmon fishing an hour away near Stanley. And then there’s Silver Creek, which has one of the densest populations of wild trout in the world. “They’re fantastically challenging fish to catch. You pick out one and say, I want you!’ Then the race is on!” McIlvoy says. To learn more, check with a local outfitter or go to Trout Unlimited’s website at hemingwaytu.org. 24

garden of infinite compassion
The Garden of Infinite Compassion at the Sawtooth Botanical Garden a few miles south of Ketchum at Highway 75 and Gimlet Road offers a quiet place of contemplation for many. The small but beautiful garden with its towering stones and gurgling creek was created over a four-week span to commemorate the 2005 visit of the Dalai Lama to the Wood River Valley. The Dalai Lama gave the community a 400-pound, hand-carved Prayer Wheel crafted by Buddhist monks in Dharamsala, India, as part of a larger message of healing in the wake of 9-11. And he blessed it, making it one of only two prayer wheels in North America he’s blessed personally. Mary Ann Chubb, an ordained Dharma teacher, will lead a guided “lovingkindness meditation” there from noon to 12:40 p.m. Friday, May 25, in conjunction with the Sun Valley Wellness Festival.

let’s go chasing ghost towns
The cacophony that once echoed through the Yankee Fork as stamp mills crushed ore for the General Custer and Lucky Boy mines have long since dimmed. Today Bonanza and Custer are vibrant examples of ghost towns. Today the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation manages the site as the Land of the Yankee Fork State Park, offering free guided tours Memorial Day through Labor Day. Start at the old schoolhouse, now a museum, take a gander at the saloon, which offers historic memorabilia and cold sodas, and then make your way past other historic sites, including the Boot Hill Cemetery. Don’t miss the Yankee Fork Dredge, a 998-ton barge that scoured the gravels of the Yankee Fork Creek retrieving a million dollars in gold and silver and leaving behind nearly 6 miles of dredge tailings. Also worth a visit: the Yankee Fork Visitor Center near Challis, which has a gold panning station, museum exhibits, audiovisual programs and even a bison jump which can be seen via a short walk. To get there, drive 11 miles north of Stanley on Highway 75 and turn left at Sunbeam. Follow the Forest Service road nine miles. hit the 19.6-mile, all-season harriman trail
It started out as a cross-country ski trail groomed once a year for skiers who wanted to test their moxie in the elite Boulder Mountain Tour race. Today the Harriman Trail is an all-season trail as prized by pedal pushers as skinny ski scooters. The 19.6-mile trail, which parallels Highway 75 and the Big Wood River, begins seven miles north of Ketchum at the Sawtooth National Recreation Area headquarters and gently climbs 1,100 feet to Galena Lodge. The gravel/dirt trail courses through meadows, aspen stands, wetlands, lodgepole forests and past rust-colored rocky outcroppings, providing a window onto Easley, Silver and Boulder peaks. Faux stone benches and interpretive signs are spaced along the path. And there’s a goat viewing scope tucked away on a hill 1. 5 miles north of Prairie Creek. The gravel makes it more suitable for mountain bikes than skinny tires. And, though it loses elevation between Galena Lodge and SNRA, count on some hills.

hemingway - papa’s footsteps
Ernest Hemingway, heralded as America’s greatest writer, came to Idaho in 1939 at the invitation of Sun Valley Resort, which hosted him in Suite 206 at the Sun Valley Lodge. Hemingway decorated the suite with slot machines and wrote “For Whom the Bell Tolls” there. He hunted ducks with actor Gary Cooper at Silver Creek and resided for a few months at the Ketchum Korral. Eventually, he bought a house overlooking the Big Wood River in Ketchum, viewable by binoculars from the White Clouds hiking trails, where he wrote “The Garden of Eden” and “A Moveable Feast” and held clay pigeon shooting parties. From there he took long walks in Eagle Creek and the North Fork area, while socializing at the Trail Creek Cabin, The Ram, Christiania and Casino. Catch more of Papa at his gravesite in the Ketchum Cemetery, the Hemingway Memorial along Trail Creek Road, the Community Library’s Regional History Department and the Ketchum/Sun Valley Ski and Heritage Museum. New this year: the “Glamour House” Hemingway tribute inside the old bank vault at Starbucks in Ketchum.

hot springs - get geothermal
Idaho is said to have more geothermal treats than any other state in the Lower 48. And the Sun Valley area has its share. The most accessible around these parts is Easley Hot Springs, open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Swim in a full-size chlorinefree 85-degree swimming pool or relax in hot tubs while soaking in the beauty of the Boulder Mountains across the way. Hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays. A nearby store provides ice cream bars and suntan lotion. (208-726-7522). Warfield Hot Springs, or Frenchman’s Bend Hot Springs, sits in the middle of Warm Springs Creek 10.5 miles west of Highway 75. Elkhorn Hot Spring is two miles east of Lower Stanley on the riverside of Highway 75; Basin Creek Hot Spring, seven miles east, and the more visible Sunbeam Hot Springs with its public bathhouse 11 miles east.

spelunking shoshone ice caves
Shoshone Ice Caves used to be a great getaway for early settlers wanting to escape the heat or, just simply, wanting some ice cubes for their tea. Now it’s a novelty for motorists along Highway 75 who can’t pass up the green dinosaur with a cave man sitting on its neck and a three-story high Chief Wasakie. Shoshone Ice Caves is actually a thousand-foot lava tube with a ceiling measuring up to 30 feet in some places. Bring your coat: It’s a chilly 28 degrees inside! (The cave man can loan you his if you forgot yours.) The caves are 17 miles north of Shoshone on Highway 75. Hours are 8 a.m. to about 7 p.m. Fees start at $4. labyrinth - path of meditation
Walk the path of meditation as you follow the valley’s two labyrinths. Designed as a place of respite and tranquility, the labyrinth is an ancient symbol the combines the imagery of the circle and the spiral into a path toward wholeness. There is a meditative pathway bordered by red roses, spring snow crabapple trees, pygmy peashrubs and Scotch pines in the Healing Garden on the south side of St. Luke’s Hospital a couple miles south of Ketchum. And there’s another near the entrance of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 201 Sun Valley Road in Ketchum.

mountain goats - sure footed
BREAKFAST, LUNCH
& DINNER
Ever seen young mountain goats run up and down their mothers’ back? It’s possible, considering the mountains surrounding Sun Valley are the farthest south mountain goats live naturally. These alpine sentinels are one of Idaho’s most elusive wild creatures—creatures living on the edge high in the steep rock cathedral spires that others can only dream of traversing. They can run straight up a steep rock wall, thanks to skidproof footpads that act as suction cups. Their front toes are split to grip rock. Their razor-sharp hooves cut like ice axes into ice. The Blaine County Recreation District has installed goat scopes at Billy’s Bridge and the Harriman Trail just over a mile north of the Prairie Creek parking lot. Both are located about 17 miles north of Ketchum off Highway 75.

pack a picnic anywhere
Don’t bother packing the fly swatter—it’s so not needed around here. Make it easy on yourself and pick up a lunchto-go while imbibing in a Turkey Avocado Benedict or Southwestern omelet at Perry’s, 4th Street and First Avenue in Ketchum. Perry’s prepares a hundred to-go lunches a day during summer—many of them for those heading out on fly-fishing excursions. Come August the restaurant employees are busy packing dinners-togo of ribs and chicken for those heading to Sun Valley Summer Symphony or Ketch’em Alive concerts. Other places to get picnic fixings: Atkinsons’ Markets, the tantalizing deli case at Cristina’s, 520 2nd St. E., in Ketchum, Shelley’s Deli at 14 E. Croy St. in Hailey, and Big Belly Deli at 171 N. Main St., in Hailey. You can also find everything you need to pack that picnic — even picnic backpacks — at Ketchum Kitchens, which is open seven days a week and is located in Giacobbi Square, Ketchum.

pioneer mountains bike tour
You don’t need a covered wagon—just a good set of bike tires. The Idaho Conservation League’s Ketchum office plans to hold its Second Annual Southern Pioneers Bike Tour at 9 a.m. June 16. The 35- to 40-mile loop will take cyclists along dirt roads, ending at the new Boyd Stocking Memorial Pavilion in Carey that volunteers donated a thousand hours to build earlier this year. This year’s route will be different than last year’s. “The idea is to acquaint people with a different aspect of the Pioneers than they might be familiar with,” said ICL Director Brett Stevenson. “That time of year is so spectacular—green and lush with wildflowers blooming and snow on the mountaintops. Our route is suitable for mountain or cross bikes, as well as kids’ chariots. And there’ll be a shorter option, as well.” 101 Amazing Things To Do / Summer 2012

Hailey’s skate park across from the Hailey Post Office has generated scads of international attention in skateboarding videos, with visits by skateboard guru Tony Hawk and even the widely popular skateboarding movie, “Northwest.” The park doubled in size last fall and it’s rare when someone isn’t ripping it up in the concrete half-pipes and swirling around the bowls. It’s as much fun to watch as it is to roll. Want something a tidbit tamer? Try Ketchum’s skate park at the corner of Warm Springs and Saddle roads.

put your toes in the sand
Granted, we have no right to call ourselves Sand Valley. But we do have sandy beaches if you know where to find them. You’ll find one along the Big Wood River just north of the Lake Creek Trailhead north of Ketchum. Play sand volleyball or pitch horseshoes at Sun Valley Lake along Dollar Road. Sun Valley also rents paddle boats for use on the lake from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. July through Labor Day. Information: 622-2492. Of course, Redfish Lake 60 miles north of Ketchum has one of the primo beaches in the area. There’s even a doggy beach where four-legged companions can romp in the sand and chase sticks in the lake.

wine auction for the arts
Get a gander of the March Fourth Marching Band at the Sun Valley Center for the Arts’ Wine Picnic Concert July 21. The band had its genesis in a Fat Tuesday Party in Portland, Ore., and has grown into one of the nation’s top touring acts that takes spectators on a journey from the Louisiana swamps to the gypsy camps of Eastern Europe. The picnic is the end product of three days of vintner dinners, a Saturday afternoon wine tasting, a Riedel Wine symposium and, of course, the Wine Auction Gala. “Wine Spectator” has ranked the July 19-21 extravaganza as one of the top 10 charity wine auctions in the nation. The money raised from the weekend goes to The Center’s long list of art and music programs for adults and children.

yurts & teepees
Mongolians have long lived not in ranch-style homes or even thatched huts. Instead, they’ve lived in teepee-like dwellings with lattice walls, radial rafters and framed doors. Those who would like to try one out can avail themselves of a yurt tucked in the woods near Galena Lodge 24 miles north of Ketchum. The yurt sleeps up to eight and is furnished with a wood stove, propane stove for cooking, lanterns, pots and pans, books and games and beds with foam mats. All you need to bring is a sleeping bag and pillow, clothes and food. (galenalodge. com or 726-4010). Sun Valley Trekking’s Coyote Yurt sits amidst a stand of spruce and fir at 8,700 feet with views of the Boulder and Pioneer Mountains. You can hike, mountain bike or drive to the yurt from Baker Creek Road with only your sleeping bag and food in tow. (svtrek. com, 788-1966). The Smiley Creek Lodge, which sits on the other side of Galena Summit 37 miles north of Sun Valley offers teepees. (208774-3547, 1-877-774-3547 or smileycreeklodge.com)

coming soon to the Valley Sun Valley doesn’t roll up the sidewalk when Labor Day comes to an end. Things are just heating up as the aspen turns yellow and orange. Here’s a look at some of the things in store this coming fall: SUN VALLEY HARVEST FESTIVAL Sun Valley’s epicurean menu is nothing to shrug about. But this festival Sept. 21-23 takes it up a notch, giving foodies a chance to learn from celebrity chefs as they share cooking secrets using lots of locally grown foodstuffs. The event includes a Martini and Caviar Party, Restaurant Walk, Harvest Marketplace and Dutch Oven Culinary Demonstration featuring Idaho river guides. Information: sunvalleyharvestfestival.com

This year’s festival will shine the spotlight on fiber with “Wild Fibers” editor Linda Cortright primed to discuss how she’s slept with 12,000 cashmere goats and witnessed sheep rescued by helicopter in New Zealand. The festival is a favorite of foodies, as well, as local chefs like private chef and caterer Tim Filgate keep-
ing busy serving up tasty lamb sliders and other dishes. Filgate may even teach a lamb cooking class for youngsters this year. Information: www.trailingofthesheep.org

Rainbow’s End Recovery Center …Where the Road Begins
R
ainbow’s End Recovery Center located on the world famous Salmon River in Challis Idaho provides a unique program of fly fishing that gives you new tools in recovering from drug and alcohol addiction. Fishing gear and instruction are provided so that clients can learn the delicate art of fly fishing, a therapeutic activity in our pond stocked with Rainbow trout. Afterwards they are ready to go fly fishing in the blue ribbon fishing hole on the Salmon River to hone their skills. It’s the perfect atmosphere for healing and recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. Fly fishing requires timing, patience and discipline, all skills which help in a person’s recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. Mastering the art of fly fishing, a new skill for many, gives the clients a new contemplative activity which helps in coping with the struggles of overcoming addiction. Fly fishing is comparable to meditation. When standing in the river, one concentrates on nature, fly fishing and playing the fish. Your mind shifts into a lower gear; the rhythm of the river and casting help reduce anxiety and tension. Clients have time for recreational activities daily and often choose to fly fish in the river for this reason. The art of fly fishing is something the client takes with them when they leave Rainbow’s End Recovery Center and can enjoy with family and friends as they continue on their road to sobriety. The Salmon River in Idaho not only provides the opportunity Fly Fishing for Steelhead and Salmon but Fly Fishing for Rainbow Trout, Cutthroat and Bull Trout year round.
