FINDING YOUR IDAHO ADVENTURE IN THE WOOD RIVER VALLEY... When I first moved to the Wood River Valley two years ago, I was lucky enough to stumble in to the Hailey Chamber of Commerce, and followed that with a visit to the Visitor Center in Ketchum. I had a few weeks off before I was to start work, and I was ready to see Idaho, and learn about my new home. Both places gave me a copy of The Weekly Sun’s “101 Amazing Things To Do,” and I was determined to do as much as I could in a few weeks. I started checking off the 101—from hot springs to hiking, live music to local restaurants, and skate parks to sheepdog trials; my family was thoroughly entertained! We were also able to do quite a bit without breaking the bank. At first it seemed a bit bizarre to not see the large retail chains and restaurants we had become accustomed to, but we quickly adopted our new “5B” way of life, supporting local businesses and immersing ourselves in all the opportunities Blaine County had to offer. Our family was welcomed by lifelong locals and transient transplants alike, just as you will be, if not already! So, whether you are searching for your inner soul on a solitary hike, cultivating culture within, or escaping and energizing through the “5B” environment, we welcome all. This is your invitation to find your Idaho adventure in the Wood River Valley!

HIKE THE MOON The mountains that surround Sun Valley give way to a vast ocean of lava flows east of Carey. The features at Craters of the Moon National Monument were formed during eight major eruptions as little as 2,000 years ago. Today the area boasts a cinder cone you can climb, a nature trail through the grotesque formations of the Devil’s Orchard and lava tubes that you can walk into. Get your bearings at the Visitors Center, open 8 a.m.-6 p.m. through Labor Day. Drive the 7-mile loop road. Take advantage of the stargazing parties. And, yes, there’s camping on site. To get there, drive east on Highway 20/26/93 from Carey. The monument is located midway between Carey and Arco. Nps.gov/crmo or 208-527-1335

Hemingway wrote a book about him as the founder of the modern art movement in Cuba. thecommunitylibrary.org or 208-726-3493

GARDEN TOUR

SAWTOOTH BOTANICAL GARDEN The Sawtooth Botanical Garden will hold its 19th annual Garden Tour on Sunday, July 6. This year’s tour will take flower lovers to gardens in Lane Ranch just south of Ketchum. Magic in the Garden, the garden’s other big fundraiser of the year, will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, July 26. Last year’s inaugural Magic in the Garden event was a hit with magic acts, fire-swallowing demonstrations and chances to toss rings around bottles of vintage wine. And this year’s promises to be every bit as much of a circus. Even mixologist Ryan Sullivan, who rolled out yummy circus peanut and cotton candy cocktails in keeping with the circus theme, will be back. 208-726-9358 or sbgarden.org
GHOST TOWNS
27
FROM FAMOUS FILMS, AND WHERE SOME STILL COME ALIVE! If you can’t find a ghost town, you ain’t in the West. Fortunately, the Sun Valley area has a plethora of ghost towns, ranging from Bullion City west of Hailey to Boulder City, which is nestled in the Boulder Mountains opposite Cathedral Pines about 10 miles north of Ketchum (where Clint Eastwood once filmed Pale Rider). Bonanza-Custer is worth a day trip. Stop in at the Ketchum Ranger District to pick up an audiocassette that will tell you interesting trivia about the area you’re driving through. Then point your car north on Highway 75 over Galena Summit to Stanley. Stanley is often the Coldest Spot USA during winter but definitely a hot spot during summer. Bonanza and Custer lie 58 miles northeast of Stanley off of Highway 93 on the Yankee Fork Road. View the old tombstone cemetery at Bonanza where you’ll learn how many miners and their families succumbed to avalanches. Check out the historical artifacts in the old schoolhouse in Custer. And marvel at the dredge that plied the Yankee Fork of the Salmon River for riches, upturning every rock in its wake. The town comes alive with interpretive characters every mid-July. And, if you care to go farther east on Highway 93, stop in at the Clayton museum and the old ghost town of Bayhorse, which lies past Challis. It’s worth seeing for its mill, kilns and Wells Fargo building. 101 Amazing Things To Do / Summer 2014

HAILEY’S DRAPER PRESERVE
30
SHADE! Had plenty of Sun Valley’s trademark sun? Escape to the cottonwood forest that towers over the Draper Wood River Preserve. The 80-acre preserve includes trails that meander from Hailey’s Cedar Bend entrance along Cedar Street or the China Gardens main entrance along Aspen Drive to Lions Park, which is accessible on West Bullion Street. The preserve features a heart-rock tree, nooks along the Big Wood River, and the Bow Bridge, a bridge designed by Leslie Howa in the shape of a bow. Finally, there’s Hailey Greenway Boardwalk from which you can observe fish, waterfowl and an occasional moose. Bellevue’s answer to that is The Howard Preserve, another natural area championed by the Wood River Land Trust along the Big Wood River. It features trails beneath cottonwood trees, wildlife viewing and fishing opportunities. To get there turn off Highway 75 in Bellevue onto Broadford Road, turn left on Martin Lane and continue to the parking lot.

Anywhere in the valley is just a walk away from a good hike. Some favorite close-in hikes: White Clouds Loop—This is a relatively easy trail that loops around Sun Valley’s White Clouds golf course across from the Sun Valley Lodge. It takes about 1.5 hours, offering a 360-degree view of the surrounding mountains. The Bald Mountain Trail—Access this 5-mile trail behind Pete Lane’s at River Run Plaza. You can make short work of it, following it as it makes a slight uphill climb paralleling the Big Wood River to a lookout poised above Ketchum. If you feel ambitious, take it all the way to the top—a climb that takes most people about two hours. From there, walk down or jump on

HOT SPRINGS

GET GEOTHERMIC THERAPY A must do is to visit any of the local hot springs in the area. Hot springs are said to be a source of natural therapy, as some have specific mineral content. In our area of Idaho, we are lucky to have natural, un-commercialized hot springs ready and waiting for your use! Taoist believe that hot springs to help balance and harmonize our body and mind; many locals agree! Here’s a list of some of the easiest to find in our area: •Russian John Hot Springs: 8 miles north of SNRA Headquarters. On the left hand side. (North of Ketchum). This is an old sheepherder soaking pool, and it’s temperature is perfect for summer and early fall at 89F. •Easley Hot Springs: 14.1 miles north of Ketchum, on the left hand side. This is a paid larger, clean pool with 2-3 other smaller hot tub size pools. It is managed by the Cathedral Pines. Opens the first Tuesday in June, and stays open through Labor Day. It can get busy with summer camps, but is usually a nice quiet get away with showers, bathrooms, and a picnic area. There are refreshments and light snacks available for purchase. A great place for families who would like a lifeguard on duty, and amenities. •Frenchman’s Bend-7 miles out Warm Springs Road located on the west side of the road. Public use from 4am to 10pm, bathing suits required; no alcohol; no glass containers and parking is restricted to a designated parking zone. Beware, the water can be extremely hot, and adjust the rocks to the right cold water flow needed! Also, there is typically no cell phone reception at any of these three locations, and besides Easley, you are on your own, so pack it in, and pack it out! Enjoy the geothermic activity! For more information on these or other local hot springs, contact the SNRA at 208-7275013.

A TRAIN RUNS THROUGH IT
The Ketchum-Sun Valley Heritage & Ski Museum in Ketchum’s Forest Service Park at First and Washington streets will reopen in early July with a new exhibit examining the railroad as the thread running through the history of the Wood River Valley from its mining, sheep and tourist days. If not for the railroad, historian Sandra Hofferber notes, neither Ketchum nor Sun Valley would be here. The Native Americans who were here before the railroad will be showcased, as well, even though they didn’t rely on the iron horse. In conjunction with the exhibit, The Community Library at 415 Spruce St. in Ketchum will feature photos of the Preamble Express, which made the last run through Ketchum in 1975. There also will be photos of the stockyards and other facilities affiliated with the train.

Again, no cover! The Young Dubliners return to play Monday, July 21, at 9pm, with a $15 cover. MOUNTAIN BIKING
44
RIDE, CYCLIST, RIDE ≈Sun Valley offers no shortage of single-track mountain bike trails, what with 435 miles of trails south of Galena and another 750 miles’ worth in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. New this year: Sun Valley’s flow trail on Bald Mountain, which can be accessed by riding the lift up. Take it to a relatively flat trail like the Corral Creek trail near Trail Creek Cabin north of Sun Valley or the Harriman Trail, which runs 18 miles from the SNRA headquarters 7 miles north of Ketchum to Galena lodge. Advanced cyclists can test their skills on Sun Valley’s lift-accessed trails on Bald Mountain. Want other flow trails—one-way mountain bike trails that resemble luge tracks with jumps and berms? Check out the 1.3-mile Forbidden Fruit in the Adams Gulch area at Ketchum’s north end. Information: bcrd.org PUBLISHED BY THE WEEKLY SUN

PARKS
49
MEANDER THROUGH THE MINI-PARKS Sometimes it seems as if the entire Wood River Valley is one big playground, from Bald Mountain and Dollar Mountain to the Draper and Howard preserves. There are some special places many visitors don’t even know exist, however. Among them: Farnlun Park. The newest addition to Ketchum’s public park system, this sliver of park sits along the Wood River bike path between Meadow Circle and River Ranch Road on Ketchum’s south side. It’s a perfect spot for families with small children pedaling south from Ketchum to stop and rest before turning around. Another gem is the Lucy Loken Park at the east end of Walnut Street in Ketchum. Situated along Trail Creek, it’s accessed via a stairway made of Montana moss rock. Suitable for picnicking, it offers attractive views of Bald Mountain, a riparian zone and a pathway to a spot overlooking the creek.

REDFISH LAKE
53
DON’T PASS UP ANY OPPORTUNITY TO GO It should be a law that everyone—local or visitor—is required to head up to Redfish Lake at least once a summer. The beauty of this 7-mile-long sparkling blue lake sitting underneath 10,000-foot crags is a balm for the soul. Camping, cabins and lodging in the historic hotel are available, as are plush meals at the lodge, hot dogs and hamburgers at the outside grill and all the usual camp fare from marshmallows to lemon-flavored beer at the camp store. There’s a dock where you can book a boat tour or rent a paddle board, paddle boat, outboard motorboat, kayak or canoe. There are great hikes, ranging from the Fishhook Creek nature trail to the Bench Lakes trail which offers an overview of the lake below. There are beaches for swimming—even Fido has his own beach. And there are horseback rides. The Redfish Lake Visitor Center opens in mid-June with films and amphitheater programs. And live concerts start up on the lawn in front of the lodge beginning June 15 and continuing every Sunday through early September. Concerts start up Wednesdays from June 18-Aug. 21 and Fridays June 20-Aug. 30. And the Plein Air Painters of Idaho will set up their easels around the lake Sept. 2-6 offering campers a chance to view them at work, along with an opportunity to buy their work. Redfishlake.com

Silver Creek Preserve

Fishing, canoeing, and bird watching heaven The fishing’s good all along the Big Wood River that runs through Ketchum, Hailey and Bellevue, and at Penny and Lake Creek lakes, which are stocked for the kids. But give a fisherman his druthers and chances are he’ll head to Silver Creek Preserve, a world-class spring-fed trout stream filled with trophy trout. And, oh boy, fishing kicks off May 24 with a free barbecue, hot dogs, burgers and drinks. In addition to fishing the stream, you can canoe part of it. You can also scout some 150 birds that have been seen along the self-guided nature trail that begins at the Visitor Center, along with deer, elk and other wildlife. The Visitor Center will offer nature walks at 9 a.m. Saturdays through the summer. To get there, drive south on Highway 75, turn left at the flashing light at Timmerman Junction onto Highway 20 and drive 7 miles to the Kilpatrick Bridge Road where there’s a brown sign saying Silver Creek Preserve. Turn right and follow the road to the Visitors Center. 208-788-7910
Skate Parks Skateboard heaven
62
Nature abounds, but we’ve got enough concrete to make skateboarders happy. The Hailey Skatepark, ridden by skateboard guru Tony Hawk himself, was recently expanded. Designed by Dreamland Skatepark, it features a full-radius concrete pipe and roll-in with handrails. You’ll find it on near the Hailey Visitor Center and rodeo grounds on Highway 75 as it begins to make the turn toward downtown. The Guy Coles Skatepark at Warm Springs and Saddle roads in Ketchum is another gem. It’s a little less intimidating than the Hailey one, with a more mellow concrete bowl, mini-ramp and plenty of good vibes. The masters have rolled through here, too, from Tony Alva to Tony Hawk to Tony Truhillo and Christian Hosoi. Check out the Skate Competition at Hailey Skate Park, Saturday June 21. “Come Together” Just tell your honey “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” and then “Twist and Shout” as Sun Valley Opera presents the 50th Anniversary of the Beatles with the FAB Four, which has been called “the greatest Beatles tribute band on the planet.” “From their dead-on vocals, their amazing resemblances to John, Paul, George and Ringo, even their meticulous attention to using the exact instruments used by the Beatles, these guys are sensational! To get the experience this perfect you’d have to find a time machine and go back to the ’60s,” says CBS’s Gary Craig. The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 5, at the Sun Valley Pavilion. The Opera will present soprano Jeannie Litster, who performed a hilarious Musetta in last year’s production of “La Bohème,” at its July 3 Diva Concert. Sunvalleyopera.com

Alright, maybe showcasing an event in early October is pushing it for a summer guide. But the Trailing of the Sheep Festival, which will celebrate its 18th anniversary this year, has become one of Sun Valley’s most talked-about events. Everyone’s featured it, from USA Today to Smithsonian and Sunset magazines, to Charles Kuralt in his “On the Road” series. And it’s easy to see why. Where else do they close the highway down so 1,500 sheep can parade down Main Street Ketchum as they make their way south from summer pastures in the mountains?! This year’s event, held Oct. 9-12, will feature dancing to The Hot Club of Cowtown at the Sheepherder’s Ball, a free lamb tasting showcasing how various chefs cook ’er up, a folk festival showcasing Basque, Scottish, Peruvian and Polish musicians and storytellers, a sheepteller’s gathering , championship sheepdog trials, wool demonstrations, cooking classes and more.

Wagon Days
Antiques, music, carnival, rodeo, duck race and pancakes The 56th Wagon Days parade will roll down Ketchum’s main streets at 1 p.m. Aug. 30 and it won’t contribute a bit to global warming since it’s all horse-powered. The highlight is always the 20-mule jerkline pulling the tall skinny Lewis freight wagons that used to ferry ore to Ketchum from mines along the Salmon River. But there are plenty more entries of interest, from Ralphie the camel to an old-fashioned doctor’s buggy to Penny Hodges’ “people puller.” Also on tap that weekend: antique shows, a gallery walk, The Papoose Club pancake breakfast, children’s carnival, classic car auction, bareback riders’ performance, music, duck race and rodeo. Harry Oestreicher of the Mendes Foundation and grandson of one of the visa recipients will be a featured guest speaker at the conclusion of the film. Lindagirl1@earthlink.net

Hit the road—or the bike path The wind doesn’t always blow the right way. And the hills through Elkhorn will leave an impression on your lungs. But pedal pushers on skinny tires can find some wonderful scenery from the back of a bicycle seat. Cruise the Wood River Trail bike path, which stretches 22 miles from Ketchum to Bellevue. Take a rest stop at the benches overlooking the Big Wood River at Boxcar Bend—you may see elk or a wolf and you’ll almost surely spot fly-fishermen in the river below. Up for a real challenge? Cycle 30 miles along Highway 75 from Ketchum to 8,701-foot Galena Summit—a mere elevation gain of about 2,800 feet for a grand view of the Sawtooth Mountains.

Wood River valley art Tour
99
Artists at home See artists at work in their studios when the Wood River Valley Studio Art Tour conducts its second annual free tour Sept. 27-28. Last year’s inaugural tour featured 55 sculptors and other artists at work in studios ranging from Martha Andrea’s painting and collage studio south of Bellevue to Will Caldwell’s log cabin studio out Warm Springs Road west of Ketchum, with many offering light refreshments. And more are expected this year. Leading up to the tour, a mosaic featuring 8-by8-inch works by some of the artists will be featured July 4-13 at Jennifer Bellinger Art Studio across from Atkinsons’ Market in Ketchum. Individual pieces from the mosaic will be auctioned off at the end of the exhibition. And on Tuesday through Thursday Sept. 23-25 Gail Severn Gallery, Wood River Fine Arts and Gilman Contemporary will host free workshops from 5:30 to 7 p.m. each night examining such topics as collecting art and the process of making a bronze sculpture. The Wood River Community Orchestra will perform background music for the events. Wrvstudiotour.org
